Vhembe floods claim another life A well-known local farmer, Mr Thomas Rantete, drowned in the Muengedzi River at Zamenkomste last Tuesday. He was busy crossing the river to fetch some of his cows that were feeding on the other side of the river.

Although police divers searched the area where Mr Rantete was overwhelmed by the water, his body was found by a member of the community on the river bank on Thursday.

According to a police report, it is suspected that Mr Rantete and two friends were looking for his cows, when he apparently ventured into the deeper portion of the river. When his friends realised he was in trouble, they tried to save him.

The water was too deep and murky. As they could not find him, they reported the incident to the community and to the police.

A community leader in the area and the chairperson of Sanco, Mr James Delekisa, expressed his condolences to the family and warned children not to play next to water. He called upon parents to watch out as all the rivers and dams are full to capacity after the heavy rain. The spokesperson of the Tshilwavhusiku SAPS, Const Munyadziwa Maridi, said the police were investigating the drowning incident. She also warned the public to be aware of the dangers of the overflowing rivers and dams in the area.

Mr Philip Rantete, a younger brother of the deceased, thanked the members of the community, who had spent long hours searching for the body.

“It is very painful to lose such a dedicated and hardworking brother and friend.”

Rantete will be buried at the Zamenkomste cemetery tomorrow (Saturday). The service will start Mr Thomas Rantete. at 06:00.

Woman accused of practicing witchcraft Members of a family of Khomela village still fear for their lives after angry villagers accused the mother of practicing witchcraft.

The incident occurred early in January. From what could be established, several residents of the village started spreading rumours that an act of witchcraft had led to several deaths in the village.

An old woman was apparently hit by lightning on 28 December last year and a man was found hanging from a tree on the 9th of January this year.

According to the woman, her family is now living in fear of the community members. “We really don’t know what will happen. What I know is that the allegations are untrue,” she said. The family moved from Khomela to another village for security reasons.

According to a resident, Mr Takalani Manaha, the community had a meeting after the incidents and it was agreed that each household must collect R100 and a sangoma must be consulted. They went to Musina and came back with a sangoma, who told them that a certain woman was responsible for the death of the two people. During the meeting, the community members allegedly decided that the woman accused of witchcraft had to be expelled from the area. “If the civic is not telling us that the witches are going, they must (also) go,” a villager said.

No comment could be obtained from members of the civic association.

Police spokesperson W/O Lazarus Netshidzati confirmed the incident and said the police were monitoring the situation. “We have managed to arrest one person who was threatening the woman.

We appreciate the efforts from community members who continuously assist the police in cases like these,” he said. The 45-year-old man, Edward Manaha, appeared in the Dzanani Magistrate’s Court two weeks ago and received a R1 000 fine.

Mob justice, vimba, lynch mob or a vigilante act - they all mean the same. It refers to a person running for his or her life after being accused of some crime. In Makhado (Louis Trichardt) this practice of jungle justice is rearing its ugly head more and more.

Two weeks ago, a mob of people suddenly started chasing a screaming man through the local taxi rank. He ran quickly and came out of the taxi rank, trying to escape in the direction of the residences along Devenish Street. The mob finally cornered him and started dragging him along the road. They kicked and beat him.

“Stop killing me!” he pleaded, covering his head with his arms as more people battered him with their shoes. “I didn’t steal a box of eggs. I bought it from somewhere else!”

The mob, which mainly consisted of hawkers and workers, allege that the man (later identified as 49-year-old Shadrack Ngoveni) stole a box of eggs from Ronald Takawira’s stall.

Fellow hawkers claim to have seen Ngoveni snatch the eggs and alerted all the other hawkers, including Takawira, who had come back, and the vimba started.

When the people around were assaulting Ngoveni, Takawira pleaded with them not to do so, because it placed the suspect’s life in danger. He hauled Ngoveni up from the tarred surface and pushed him along the street in the hope that the police might arrive to rescue him. “Stop protecting the thief!” a woman criticised Takawira. “He stole from you.”

The police arrived 10 minutes later and found people still beating Ngoveni. They finally managed to push a bloodied Ngoveni into the back of the police van, with Takawira’s help. Seeing that the man had been locked inside the van, the people dispersed. “I am not laying any criminal charges against him,” said Takawira. “He has had enough pain already.”

Ngoveni was treated at the Louis Trichardt Memorial Hospital and released on the same day. He returned to work last Thursday, six days after the incident. “I was admitted to Elim hospital and stayed there for three days,” Ngoveni said.

“What the people did to me is not good. I only went to the taxi rank at lunch time to buy some cigarettes and eggs.” He maintains that he had merely stood near Takawira’s stand, when three boys mugged him.

“They took my R100, as well as R200 which belonged to my colleague, who had sent me to get him some cigarettes,” he explained his side of the story. “I didn’t steal anybody’s eggs.”

Makhado Hawkers’ Association chairperson Dollen Negota says that they could not condone any stealing in the area where they conduct their business. “Anyone who thinks of stealing from us or from our visitors must think twice before doing so,” warned Negota. The spokesperson of the Makhado police, Capt Maano Sadiki, condemned the act of mob justice.

“In our country, we don’t have the law of the jungle,” Capt Sadiki said. “All incidents of crime, including theft, should be reported to the police.”

Community saves woman from Mutale’s raging flood waters Amid every natural disaster there are usually tales of extreme heroism of people putting life and limb on the line to safe the life of another.

The recent flooding in Limpopo was no exception, with not only one person but a whole community who rallied without hesitation to rescue a woman left stranded by the raging floodwaters of the Mutale River at her riverside home.

The drama unfolded at Bende Mutale near Pafuri on 20 January.

Sari Landman, a woman who has been part of the village for a good six years, was left stranded after the river had risen to such extreme heights overnight as a result of extensive rains that her home was cut off from the main land. After being advised to climb the largest tree, Sari climbed

on top of her house, hoping that it would not be washed away by the rising water.

As soon as the people of Bende Mutale became aware of Sari’s plight, a rescue party was formed.

A team was assembled quickly and a rope was tied around Martin Fouché, camp manager of Pafuri River Camp, and the strongest-looking tree stump, so he could assess the flow of the water.

Thomas arrived on Sari’s bank safely and began preparing a 100m-long length of pipe to send across to meet Martin, who was now halfway across the water. By joining the pipe and the rope, the team made a line across the water that could be held onto to prevent their being washed away by the extremely strong current.

More men swam across the raging river to help keep Sari secure against the line, so that she didn’t fall. Taking it step-by-step, Sari bravely entered the water and began her journey across.

Many of the people from the village had gathered and held the rope up as high as possible, as the flow was so strong that, if the rope touched the water, it could have easily pulled the whole group down.

After arriving on the bank, a relieved Sari remarked that if it weren’t for the men’s strength in securing her to the line, she would not have been able to move, due to the force of the water. Only once she took hold of their shoulders, the men could pull her as she floated through.

Chabane encourages mourning family The Minister in the Presidency for Performance Monitoring, Evaluation and Administration, Mr Collins Chabane, last Thursday visited the bereaved family who lost three family members in the floods near Pontdrift last week.

They were killed when the vehicle they were travelling in plunged into a stream after a bridge was swept away by the heavy rains on the Pontdrif road. Ms Nomathemba Sibanda (22) lost her husband, Hendrick Malithuba (46) and her children Thapelo (2) and Thabo (1) in the accident. Mr Malithuba’s body was later found about 500m from the scene of the accident.

The bodies of the children were recovered about 2km away from the accident scene, after the search-and-rescue team spent four sleepless days and nights.

The minister also visited the spots where the bodies of the children were recovered.

Chabane passed heartfelt condolences and sympathised with the family on behalf of the government. The minister was also in Musina to get firsthand information and to establish the facts on the damage caused by the recent floods at the border town. He expressed sincere gratitude to the search-andrescue team for the manner in which it had handled the search for the missing two children.

He further commended the Musina municipality for showing leadership during the difficult period. “We are here to reiterate our commitment and to pledge Government’s support to the family during this period of mourning. Government has been providing counselling

through social workers to the family as well as providing assistance with the burial needs of the family,” said Chabane.

The minister was received well by the family, who expressed their appreciation during this difficult time. He was met by family representatives and elders who thanked the government and the local municipality for ensuring that the funeral service of the deceased was organized with dignity. Meanwhile, the three family members will be buried tomorrow (Saturday) at Musina (Mshongoville) at 06:00.

The minister also visited members of the joint operational committee (JOC) at the Musina SAPS. The committee was responsible for coordinating all the activities relating to the matter of flood disasters.

The SAPS at Musina have opened an inquest docket after a 54-year-old Zimbabwean man drowned on the South African side of the Limpopo River on Sunday afternoon.

According to the police statement, five men from a local farm were working on a water pipeline project, when one of them lost his balance and slipped into the river. His colleagues did not at-

tempt to dive into the water to rescue him because the river was deep. Members of the emergency services were alerted about the incident and they soon rushed to the scene in a helicopter. The rescue attempt was suspended when it became too dark for the emergency services officials to continue with their work.

“Stop the illegal installing of chiefs” The premier of Limpopo, Mr Cassel Mathale, has warned traditional leaders in Vhembe to stop the illegal installing of chiefs and headmen in their areas.

Mathale was addressing senior Vhavenda chiefs during a courtesy visit to Khosikhulu Toni Mphephu Ramabulana on Friday.

Conspicuously absent were the Tshivhase and the Mphaphuli royal families. The two were strong contenders during the Vhavenda kingship battle.

Mphaphuli has gone on record and publicly announced that he will support Mphephu as king of the Vhavenda.

During the visit, which took place at the king's guesthouse in Dzanani, Mathale handed over a chair and other furniture which had been used by Khosikhulu Toni Mphephu's late father, Khosikhulu Patrick Mphephu, while he was president of the erstwhile Republic of Venda.

Mathale called on traditional leaders to follow the law when installing chiefs and headmen to avoid friction in the communities. “All people who engage in processes of installing people as chiefs and indunas should follow the law as set down by the

provincial government. Those that are not done according to the law should be stopped as they will create problems for the government and the community in the long run,” said Mathale.

He also said those appointed in an unlawful manner would not be recognized by the government.

Mathale told those gathered that a task team has been established to look into the needs of the kings of the Vhavenda and Bapedi. Issues that the task team will look into are security, offices, transport and other logistics for the king.

“We know the constraints you are dealing with, because the king has been recognised and has a certificate. Nothing has changed; he is still using the old office and other amenities which do not befit his stature as king. We are working very hard to finalize what is due to him and he himself should be proud when he meets other kings. If you are a king in Venda, you must not see the difference between yourself and a king in other parts of the country like Kwazulu Natal and the Eastern Cape,” said Mathale.

see so many chiefs and headmen being installed by other leaders in the area. “We are still surprised by the number of chiefs being installed, but we suspected that somebody wanted to make himself king. We are happy today that the matter was clarified, that these installations are illegal and that they will not be recognized by the government,” he said.

In response, King Toni Mphephu said he was honoured to have a visit by the premier, who also brought him some memorabilia in the form of furniture used by his late father. “We are greatly humbled to have received these things, but we are still waiting for the helicopter that my father used. I have a piece of turf ready where it will land and I will employ people to look after it,” he said jokingly.

He thanked the government for recognising the Ramabulana family as kings and giving it the respect it deserves.

A 27-year-old man from Dombodema village outside Beit Bridge was sentenced to 20 months in jail for stealing a pistol from an army officer.

Stella says that Denga was last seen wearing a pair of brown trousers, a maroon long-sleeved shirt, a brown waistcoat, a beige jacket and brown shoes.

He is light brown in complexion.

Denga’s elderly wife, Mrs Alosia Denga (78), is heartbroken that her husband of many years has gone missing. “I cannot grasp the meaning of life when my husband is nowhere to be seen,” she sobs.

and his friends. Nleya tried to reason with Nkomo and his colleagues, but they became more violent, prompting him to draw his service pistol in an attempt to calm the commotion. Nkomo then violently snatched the pistol and ran away. Members of the community then alerted Ms Margaret Ndebele, who is a member of the local Neighbourhood Watch Committee, who confronted Nkomo and retrieved the firearm.

Stranded villagers rescued along Limpopo The Beit Bridge Civil Protection Unit rescued at least 34 villagers, who had been stranded for several days along the Limpopo River at Tshikwalakwala village outside the border town, last week.

The rescue mission, which lasted for 30 minutes, was conducted with the assistance of a helicopter from the Air Force of Zimbabwe (AFZ). The victims were airlifted from the Mapho area to safety at the Tshikwalakwala Clinic. The clinic was set up as a temporary shelter for flood victims. The villagers were left stranded when their huts were destroyed by the torrential rains which have been pounding the district during the past weeks.

The rescue team was kept busy since Monday when it rescued five people who were stranded across the Bubi River after a bridge was swept away The heavy rains of the past month left their mark on numerous landmarks. Beit Bridge Civil Protection Unit chairperson Mr Simon Muleya said nine people had died due to flooding in the area. The CPU had distributed 130 tents, mosquito nets, kitchen utensils and several blankets for the victims from the International Organisation for Migration and the Red Cross Zimbabwe. The district also received a truck from their national office to transport supplies to all the affected areas.

Muleya said the victims received food hampers, 480 bars of soap, 990 fleece blankets and 1 000 buckets among other non-food stuffs. He said the authorities were mobilising resources to build tworoomed houses for the victims. Rannditsheni to lead circuit again

A time bomb ready to explode ...

Residents of Tswinga RDP Section just outside Thohoyandou say their houses are time bombs, which are just waiting for an opportune time to explode.

The section, which consists of more than 200 RDP houses built some years ago, is populated by mostly unemployed and low-income earners, with signs of extreme poverty rife in the area.

Almost all the houses in the area have cracks and leaking roofs, and some roofs are gone, making them unsafe and unfit for human habitation. The area has no facilities such as schools and playing grounds. The only facility that is in close proximity is the local clinic. Young boys kill their time by playing soccer on a small patch of soil in bushes next to the settlement.

Residents in the area say they have on several occasions alerted the Thulamela Local

Municipality about their plight.

Community leader Hendrick Nemalamangwa took Limpopo Mirror on a tour of the settlement last Friday. “We live in constant fear here. Most of our houses have cracks and could collapse at any given time.

Some of our friends have had their roofs blown away by wind.

We just pray that when anything happens, no life is lost,” said Nemalamangwa.

“Not a single resident has a title deed, which means we are not the owners of the houses.

How can we repair houses that do not belong to us? They should give us proof that we are the owners and then we will have the power to seek help in order to repair the houses. Otherwise, they should do it as the municipality,” he said.

According to him, the project failed from the start. “These houses are substandard and were built by contractors who

were only after money. On paper, more than 500 houses were supposed to be built and were paid for by the government. In reality, only around 250 houses were built. One cannot expect good to come from such a project,” added Nemalamangwa. He said officials were seen in the area recently.

“We cannot tell what they were doing. Maybe they are planning something good for us; maybe they will also fix the houses,” he said.

Thulamela Municipality’s spokesperson, Nndwamato Tshiila, said it was the first time that the matter had come to the attention of the municipality.

“This is news to us. We are hearing it for the first time from you, and we have not had any discussion in meetings relating to these houses. We will make a follow-up and make enquiries with the relevant sections,” he said.

Muslim community celebrates birthday Hundreds of Muslim faithful from Limpopo gathered in Thohoyandou on Sunday for the annual celebrations marking the birth of the Prophet Muhammad.

As part of the celebrations, they marched through the streets of Thohoyandou and were followed by a procession of more than 200 vehicles.

They also sang on top of their voices in praise of the Prophet Muhammad. Along the route they took, they handed out gifts to passersby.

Mohammed Rafiq Lakha, the director of Chistiya-Ashrafiya Masjid (Mosque) in Thohoyandou, said it was important

that they observe the day as the Prophet Muhammad had done extraordinary things for humanity.

“We are doing this to remind our communities of the good things that our prophet has done.

“People should not forget our history and should know what the Prophet stood for. He is a messenger of Almighty Allah, the Creator of the whole Universe. He is the last prophet from Allah and he led a life of peace, a life that never hurt or disturb any living organism. We should also lead a life that will lead us to Jannat. One day, we will have to face the Almighty Allah; let us be prepared,” said Lakha.

He said the Muslim community, which is mostly comprised of businesspeople, will, as a sign of goodwill, continue helping the needy in the community.

“We have a duty to follow in the footsteps of Prophet Muhammad, who fed the hungry, who educated the illiterate and brought peace and harmony to communities. We have identified certain projects where we will intervene, details of which will be made known before long. Job creation in the community will be one of our focus areas this year.

Our communities are ravaged by unemployment and poverty, which we would like to see eradicated,” added Lakha.

Suspect on the run A man is on the run after he had allegedly raped his former girlfriend at Madombidzha Zone Two last Friday (25 January).

The 30-year-old female victim was walking along the street with her new boyfriend at about 20:50. The suspect allegedly approached them and, without any warning, started hitting the woman on the mouth repeatedly. The woman’s new boyfriend ran away.

According to the spokesperson for the Tshilwavhusiku police, Cont Munyadziwa Marindi, the suspect then lifted a rock and chased the woman. He hit her on the back. She got up to her feet again and hobbled forward, but the suspect followed her and dragged her to the ground.

Serious water shortage hits Beit Bridge Beit Bridge town has been hit by a serious water shortage, following the flooding of the pump at the water treatment plant as a result of the torrential rains that pounded the district last week.

The water treatment pump, which is located a few metres from the Limpopo River, was submerged and local engineers from the National Water Authority are still trying to drain the water from the pump. The floods also left the back-up generators submerged and affected the power system.

The border town has been without water since Wednesday last week and the residents are relying on 33 boreholes, which were drilled at various strategic points at the height of the cholera outbreak in 2008. The town secretary, Dr Sipho Singo, told Limpopo Mirror that the taps would remain dry for the next seven days while they tried to repair the pump station. The floods have also affected construction work on the new treatment pump. Singo said the floods had also damaged the water and sewer reticulation infrastructure. He said four points had been damaged on the main sewer line and three points had since been repaired. Singo added that the Dulibadzimu bus terminus and several link roads had been damaged extensively and their engineering department was working on them. “We expect to start pumping water to the houses in a week. At the moment, our engineers are working round the clock to fix the pump,” he said.

Singo said they were doing everything necessary to avoid the outbreak of water-borne diseases such as cholera.

Mayor launches R12m Mphaila bridge project After the bridge at Mphaila was severely damaged by the floods about ten days ago, the mayor of Makhado Municipality, Cllr David Mutavhatsindi, launched a project to reconstruct the bridge last Friday.

The new bridge will cost in the region of R12 million.

The bridge at Mphaila is one the nine bridges washed by the heavy rain.

Members of the community did not go to work last week and pupils could not go to school because the access roads to school were damaged.

Mutavhatsindi said that his council had set aside R12 million to reconstruct the bridge.

He said that the new bridge would be capable of handling the expected traffic volume in the area. “The construction of

this bridge will once again contribute to the economic activities in the area,” he said. He also added that the construction made provision for the employment of local labourers.

It is expected that the work will be finished in August. A community member of Dovhani Makushu said the new bridge would give them access to other areas, even during the rainy time. He added that the elderly could not get their pensions last week, due to the lack of infrastructure after the bridge was damaged. Mr Jomo Marebane, the manager of Nkhachane Construction, who will do the work, said that they would work hard to finish construction in time. He appealed to motorists to adhere to the traffic rules when Mayor David Mutavhatsindi (centre) launches the bridge project, with community members the crew was busy and municipal officials looking on. working.

Still no news of missing boy “When I walk around the village, everyone says that if it were their child who had gone missing, they would have fought hard to get him or her back home,” says Mr Takalani Mabusha, father of the nineyear-old missing boy, Theophilus Tshivhi.

The case against the five supects was later withdrawn, an act which angered the community so much that they eventually set Ramaremela’s property alight in protest and banned her from Madombidzha village.

Now, a year later, young Theophilus has not been found yet. “I am really hurting,” Mabusha says, his voice filled with pain and sadness.

“Every morning when I see children dressed neatly in school uniforms, I think of my son and miss him very much. I request members of the community to help me find my son.”

Mabusha blames the Director of Public Prosecutions for ordering the case against the five suspects to be withdrawn. “The DPP made a big mistake and its fatal consequences are felt by us as family members,” he says. “We feel like taking the law into our own hands now, but we respect the police who advised us not to go that route.” The intervention by the provincial commissioner, Lt Gen Simon Mpembe, who promised to reinvestigate the case, restored the family’s faith (Limpopo Mirror, 29 June 2012). “We are still waiting for the commissioner’s office to come back to us,” says a representative of the community, Mr Victor Ratshibaya.

“This is a painful case, to say the least. Those who took the child away are walking freely. We pray God to strike all of them with craziness, so that they may walk around telling everyone where the child is.”

15 Years in jail for raping stepdaughter A 32-year-old Beit Bridge man was sentenced to 15 years in prison for raping his 11-year-old stepdaughter.

The man, who cannot be named to protect the victim, pleaded guilty to the charge before Regional Magistrate Joseph Mabeza last Tuesday.

It was testified that on 14 January this year, at about 21:00, the man arrived home drunk and found his wife already asleep with the complainant, with whom they shared the bedroom.

The man and his wife then apparently had a fierce argument and he threatened to assault her.

She left the house to seek refuge with nearby relatives. The man also left the house and went to his aunt’s place, where he stayed for a while. When he returned home at about midnight, looking for his wife, he found that she had not returned and he failed to locate her.

He then started harassing the complainant and her younger sister, who were sleeping in the bedroom, asking them about the whereabouts of their mother. He then took advantage of the absence of his wife and ordered the stepdaughter to undress.

She complied and he raped her before threatening to kill her if she ever revealed what had happened.

Then he fell asleep in her bed.

The matter came to light when his wife returned home at around 02:00 the following day and found him sleeping in the same bed as his stepdaughter.

On being questioned, the girl revealed that the stepfather had raped her and the matter was reported to the police, leading to the man’s arrest.

The project will augment water supplies of the Groot Letaba River that supplies water to domestic users, resource poor farmers, commercial irrigation, commercial afforestation and tourism in the Mopani District. The Mopani District Municipality serves a total urban and rural population of about 1,2 million people, with 425 000 people from the directly affected x Greater Tzaneen Municipality.

The Project comprises of construction of a dam situated below the confluence of the Groot Letaba and the Nwanedzi Rivers on a site known as Nwamitwa, the raising of the Tzaneen Dam and water treatment works, pipeline and the reservoirs for the regional bulk distribution of water for x domestic use.

A 40-year-old musician says that he cannot imagine living without musical sounds around him as he considers music to be the food of thought.

Patrick Rathokolo, a resident of Tshikota, has just released his second gospel album, titled I Love You Father God. It comprises 15 songs, such as Ndi funa Yesu, Sweet Chariots, Babylon and Tuwa mbilu yanga. The songs are mainly sung in Tshivenda and English.

“I don’t like blowing the horn about my abilities or the quality of my music,” says a humble Rathokolo, “but in the music industry, you’ve got to communicate with your fans through the newspapers and the radio, and this is exactly where people need to know about your work. There are messages to soothe and uplift broken-hearted souls in my songs.”

After matriculating, Rathokolo wished to pursue his music studies at the University of Venda, but a lack of money impeded him. With much patience and hard work, he managed to raise some money and boarded a bus to Johannesburg. “In Johannesburg I enrolled to study music at Funda Centre.”

His passion for music was seen in his zeal to make friends with like-minded individuals and companies. “Remember, I was in an art school,” he says. “But I had taken to visiting Morning Star recording studio after school hours, where I learnt a lot about recording music.”

Rathokolo says that what he loves most is to sing while playing an acoustic guitar. “I was lucky enough to meet a gentleman from Cape Town, named Sydney, in 1988,” he tells. “He taught me how to play the acoustic guitar. I like the sound of an acoustic guitar because it is unique and natural.” In 2001, he heard that a church in Makhado needed members for a worship team, so he seized the opportunity and went for an audition. He was successful and the experience with the worship team helped him sharpen his musical skills and expand his knowledge. He recorded his first album in 2010, with the assistance of backing vocalists Winny Ramuthaga and Lufuno Muzila.

This project has identified different youths from all the wards within the Makhado Municipality to uplift them by teaching them business skills.

The municipality’s youth council organised the donation, and with the help of the NYDA, they were able to set the new entrepreneurs on their way.

NYDA donated bicycles, specially equipped with baskets, filled to the brim with cleaning products that the new businessmen and –women can sell to generate an income.

Each equipped bicycle is worth R7 000. The sturdy baskets of the bicycle will make it easier for the youths to sell their products in their own villages.

Unemployed youths, often from a disadvantaged background, were selected to benefit from the programme.

Speaking at the handing-over

ceremony on Monday, the mayor of Makhado Municipality, Cllr David Mutavhatsindi, encouraged the youths to make a success of their business. “We will be checking up on you in a year’s time to see if you are still on track,” he said. “You must go and work hard for the pride of Makhado Municipality.”

Mutavhatsindi also encouraged the public to support the youths. They will be easily identified with their marked NYDA bicycles, each with its own bell.

Mmilige Secondary School awards its top achievers Pupils were awarded prizes and certificates for outstanding performances at an event held on Friday at Mmilige Secondary School in Midoroni village.

Five pupils, from all five grades, were recognised for performing well during the 2012 academic year.

The top achiever in Grade12, Takalani Lephaswa, was awarded a laptop computer, a trophy and a certificate. His excited mother, Ms Mabel Lephaswa, accepted the prize on his behalf.

Takalani is off to the University of Witwatersrand, where he intends to study mining engineering. “All I can say is that I was able to achieve good results in Grade12 because I had teachers who encouraged me,” Takalani told Limpopo Mirror in a telephone interview from Johannesburg. “I also advise all current Grade12 pupils to start working hard now when there is still enough time.”

Musiwa Sikwau, Tumelo Majoko, Dikeledi Munukhu and Moloko Makhitha each received a certificate of excellence and a trophy.

The guest speaker and donor, Mr Tshinetisa Siebani, used a personal journey-to-success diagram and photo album to demonstrate the road to success and motivate pupils to work hard. “I encourage all learners here to stay focused and study their books,” he said. “Another thing to remember is to register at universities on time in order to avoid being turned down.” Siebani promised to award all Grade12 pupils for every subject passed with a distinction at the end of the year. He said that the pupils would

Speaking on behalf of the pupils, a Grade12 pupil, Musiiwa Sikhau, thanked all the teachers who were continuing working at the school.

“You have become our parents and without you we cannot get anywhere in life,” he said. “I am going to walk away with R3 000 for six distinctions!” He further expressed his appreciation to all stakeholders who had sponsored the awards.

Jeremiah Sebula and Constance Sebula donated a refrigerator, two microwave ovens and a heater, which were given to teachers who showed excellence in teaching.

One of the recognised teachers, Ms Mokgadi Ramahala, acknowledged a token of appreciation handed over to her in the form of a refrigerator as an overall best-performing teacher.

“This is only a challenge for me to work harder,” she said.

Tough victory for Vhembe FET Vhembe FET College deposited three valuable points into their league account, following their 3-2 victory over Maranzhe Hungry Lions in their SAB League match at the Makwarela Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

As if they were going to bury their opponents alive, Hungry Lions scored their first goal in the second minute of the game. Their overlapping defender, Mgababa Ndou, finished off a rebound after Rudzani Rambuda’s volley hit the woodwork and bounced back to play. It took the students 15 minutes to retaliate. Pfano Rambani capitalised on a clearing error by Pfarelo Nemaranzhe to score FET’s first goal.

Hungry Lions lost their original fighting spirit Khathutshelo Tshidade of FET jumps over Mulalo Sihwili of Hungry soon after the students’ equaliser. They were seLions. verely punished for that.
