Believe it or not, but this is the newly built sidewalk in Alwyn Street, Louis Trichardt, between Leeu and Kameel Street. The reasoning behind it left many residents dumbfounded. “What genius in our municipality decided to spend money on a sidewalk down the entire length of Alwyn Street east of Leeu Street and make it impossible for pedestrians to use? I am in favour of paved sidewalks, but they need to be smooth enough for even the elderly to use safely. Pedestrians are now forced to use the roadway, yet for the same money that this monstrosity cost, a safe and pleasing sidewalk could have been provided. Too often roads are built with only motor vehicles in mind and without any consideration for all road uses,” remarked Louis Trichardt resident Malcolm Tucker.

We’ll soon do away with our “actors”, promises mayor By Anton van Zyl The Makhado municipality will soon no lon ger be the playground of “actors”, the mayor of Makhado, Cllr Samuel Munyai, promised last week. During his budget speech, Munyai said that people had started joking that this was a place for “Hollywood actors” because of the number of senior officials serving in acting posts. “We have just finished the process of interviewing [for] the positions of municipal manager and directors. We are therefore going to move in full swing,” Munyai said. The Makhado Municipality has come under pressure for its inability to fill important senior positions, with many believing that the in-fighting within the ANC caused a stalemate in the cadre-deployment process.

Friday’s meeting to present the municipality’s budget for 2022/23 did not start without some drama. Members of the Zoutpansberg Development Community Forum (ZCDF) embarked on a protest march and wanted to deliver a memorandum of grievances to the mayor but were stopped by the police. Mayor Munyai proceeded to present a budget topping R1,65 billion (total). The operating budget is set at R1,205 billion, while the capital budget amounts to R449,8 million. The exact details of the budget were, however, not made available. Only selected information about the budget was contained in the mayor’s speech. When the municipality’s spokesperson, Louis Bobodi, was asked to make the approved budget available, he was unable to do so. He suggested that this document be officially requested from the municipal manager. The approved

budget is supposed to be available to members of the public but is not at present. The only document available on the municipality’s website is an outdated draft version.

As jy potjie wou maak, het skaappotjie R12,95 per kilogram gekos.

As far as the operating budget is concerned, several projects have been prioritised. The biggest amount, R16 million, is set aside for the maintenance of roads in Louis Trichardt and the R293 townships. A further R15 million is budgeted for the grading and gravelling of roads in all wards. Council has set aside R11 million to construct electricity feeder lines in Levubu, while R3,4 million is allocated for streetlights in Louis Trichardt, Waterval, Tshikota and Dzanani. R8,1 million will be used for bush clearing and the replacement of ageing infrastructure in Mara, Bandelierkop, Bluegumspoort and at the Tshihire, Levubu 1 and Levubu 2 feeder lines. The municipality will receive several grants to help it cover its operational expenses. National Treasury will contribute R445,89 million through its equitable share grant. The municipal infrastructure grant (MIG) will again add R102,59 million to the municipality’s coffers, while a R1,95 million financial management grant was promised. The extended public works programme will also contribute R3,259 million.

University plans on track “The Louis Trichardt Extension 13 township will be finalised by the end of this month (June), which will culminate in the process of transferring the portion of land to the University of Venda for the development of the much-awaited campus,” said Munyai. He also mentioned the development in Louis Trichardt Extension 9 (north of Stubbs Street), which is being done in conjunction with COGHSTA. He expressed the hope that the expansion of the town would ultimately lead to improved revenue collection. The municipality is also in the process of finalising the town establishments in Louis Trichardt Extension 13 and Tshikota Extension 2 and 3. “All these projects combined [will add] 2 800 stands,” he said.

“Waar u vertoef, sal Ek vertoef,” gaan Rut voort.

“Toe doen my vriendin dit.

Foto verskaf. Foto verskaf.

ZOUTPANSBERGER, 1 JULIE 2022

Nanda will be remembered for her caring and dedication By Andries van Zyl Family and friends said farewell with great sadness to much-loved Nanda Truter of Louis Trichardt who passed away on Wednesday, 22 June, after losing a 14-month battle with cancer. She was 56 years old. Nanda was diagnosed with cancer on 20 April 2021, for which she received aggressive treatment, including radiation and chemotherapy. The treatment was unsuccessful, however, and she returned home about two weeks ago to spend her last days with her family. She died with her husband, Kevin, and all her children around her. “Nanda accepted it and all the children accepted it. We could speak about it before the time,” said Kevin. Kevin, Nanda and their children moved to Air Force Base Makhado in June 2014 after Kevin was appointed the base’s aviation safety officer. He himself is a decorated member of the South African Air Force, having served as a fighter pilot from 1981 to 1991. Nanda’s parents came over from Holland and stayed opposite the Truters in Pretoria. After school, Kevin joined the South African Air Force and the couple got married in the Waterkloof Officer’s Mess in 1987. “She was a home executive from the beginning. She wanted 15 kids, but we stopped at five,” Kevin remarks jokingly. The five children, eldest to youngest, are Brendan, Vicky, Chantelle, Keagan and Jennavieve. Since the family moved to AFB Makhado, they quickly made friends. Nanda really enjoyed the base life and lived out her passion for nature and immense interest in birds. “We had the biggest ecosystem in our garden … We had more trees in our yard than everyone else ... So Nanda used to feed all the birds. They had water and we even had owl boxes,” said Kevin. Nanda also had a great love of photography and used it to document her bird sightings. She also loved taking sunset photos. “We have hundreds of photos of sunsets she took,” said Kevin. Nanda’s children remember her for the caring and dedicated mother she was. “She was our communications officer. She spoke to all the kids, whether they were in Johannesburg, Pretoria, Paarl, Stellenbosch … calling every morning to ask: ‘How are you doing?’ She was brilliant. She knew where everybody was,” said her chil-

dren. They also fondly remember their mother for the Speculaas she loved making to treat the family. Speculaas is a traditional Dutch spiced shortcrust biscuit. The family thanked all who contributed, in whatever way, to Nanda’s care and wellbeing during her sickness, especially all the medical personnel involved. They also thanked all those who supported them through messages of condolences after Nanda’s passing. They did not want to single out specific people. A private memorial service for Nanda was held by her immediate family only. Her ashes will be strewn at a place of the family’s choosing at a later stage. She is survived by her husband Kevin, her five children (and spouses of those married) and one grandchild.

Battle of Delville Wood commemorated July 2022 marks the 106th anniversary of the Battle of the Somme, one of the bloodiest battles in human history. Between 1 July and 18 November 1916, more than one million men were wounded or killed on the banks of the river Somme in France. Among the soldiers killed and injured were more than 2 400 South Africans who fought for control over a small piece of land in the northeast of France, called Delville Wood. On Sunday, 17 July, at 11:00, a special service will be held at the Moths’ Turbi Hills Shellhole to commemorate Delville Wood and to pay tribute to the South African soldiers who lost their lives during his war. For more information, Old Bill Ben Wolff can be contacted at 084 368 7045.

ZOUTPANSBERGER, 1 JULIE 2022

Sheryl on her way to Commonwealth Games Die Louis Trichardt Tennisklub het op Donderdag, 16 Junie, ‘n baie suksesvolle dubbelspeltoernooi aangebied. Paralympic bronze medallist Sheryl James from Louis Trichardt has been selected as part of the approximately 190-member South African team to take part in the 2022 Common wealth Games in Birmingham at the end of July, beginning August. For the first time in history, the games incorporate both able-bodied and para-athletes at the same games. The announcement of the team took place at SASCOC House on 8 June. Nine para-athletes are in the team and events are limited for these athletes, so Sheryl is only running the 100m on 2 August. She is competing in a mixed category, where the others are T38 class and she is T37, so Sheryl is up against stronger athletes. She is, however, is looking forward to the challenge and is honoured to have the privilege of competing for South Africa at these games. Pictured is Sheryl during a recent training session at the Peter Mokaba stadium in Polokwane. Photo supplied.
