Four die in bloody shootout with police Four suspected cash-in-transit robbers paid the ultimate price Monday morning when they were gunned down by the police, following a botched robbery attempt. Just outside Vuwani, on the Masia road, the bloodied bodies of the four men bore silent testimony to the violent shootout which had brought an end to their lives. They lay several metres from each other next to the bullet-riddled silver BMW they were travelling in. One suspect was wearing a police reflector jacket, and the police found a blue police light inside the BMW. The shootout followed when members of the police’s operational response team noticed a Coin security vehicle standing next to the road, with the four robbers allegedly trying to open the back doors of the vehicle. Two security guards were transporting money from Elim to Vuwani. According to provincial police

spokesperson Brig Hangwani Mulaudzi, the suspects, armed with 9mm pistols, started shooting when the police stopped to investigate. A shootout between the four men and the police then erupted. Amidst the chaos, the robbers apparently tried to flee into the bushes but were gunned down before they even managed to reach a nearby farm’s boundary fence. One of the suspects was shot dead next to the BMW. Another one succumbed only a few metres further away, while the remaining two’s bodies were found in the reserve next to the road. Neither the Coin security guards nor any of the policemen were injured during the shootout. Following the incident, the police said it was clear that crime does not pay. “It’s a clear indication of the hard stance that we take against criminals who think they can come and commit crime in this province, and in the process also turn their firearms

on the police,” remarked provincial police commissioner Lt-Gen Simon Mpembe. Next to and inside the BMW, police recovered a 5-litre can of petrol, some matches and a pair of woolen gloves. Four 9mm pistols were also recovered on the scene. According to information available, the serial numbers had been filed off. Police also found braided rope and beads on the bodies of the four suspects. It is assumed that these could be muti talismans used by the robbers to protect them. At the time of going to press, the police had yet to release the names of the four robbers. On Tuesday, the spokesperson for the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID), Mr Moses Dlamini, confirmed that they are investigating the case. He explained that it is mandatory to investigate any death as a result of police action to determine if the death of a suspect was justified.

Personeel met messe toegetakel tydens rooftog “Ek het besef die man met die geweer is in beheer en jy moet niks roekeloos doen nie. Selfs na die roof was ek kalm. Ek het eers Maandag gehuil ...” So het mnr. Johan Kirsten, eienaar van Ocean Basket in Makhado, Woensdag gesê, nadat hy en drie van sy bestuurders Sondagaand ‘n gewapende roof oorleef het. Hulle het egter nie ongedeerd daarvan afgekom nie. Johan vertel dat hy en sy drie bestuur ders, sy dogter Marette Louw, Marcel Pearce en Azwianewi Mushome, kort na toemaaktyd om 22:00 gou ‘n klein bestuursvergadering gehad het. Hy het daarna vir Azwianewi, wat daar naby woon, gaan oopsluit sodat sy kon huistoe gaan. Oomblikke later het hulle haar bloedstollend hoor gil. Uit die donker het twee mans met klapmusse gekom, een gewapen met ‘n pistool en die ander met ‘n mes, wat vir Johan, Azwianewi, Marette en Marcel terug geforseer het na die kantoor waar die kontant gehou word. Kort daarna het ‘n derde aanvaller by sy makkers aangesluit. Die vier is beveel om op hul mae op die grond te lê en Johan se hande is agter sy rug vasgebind. “Hulle was baie aggressief. Ons is geskop as ons nie vinnig genoeg reageer het nie,” vertel Johan. Hulle is ook elke keer geskop as hulle opkyk. Volgens Johan wou die rowers twee dinge hê – geld en die opname binne die sekuriteitskamera. “Hulle het die hele tyd geskreeu ‘Where is the money!’ As jy nie dadelik geantwoord het ‘There’ nie, het hulle geskreeu ‘Shut up, we’ll kill

Hy het verskriklik gebloei, maar gelukkig is die hoofslagaar nie getref nie. “Ek het die hele tyd gebid ... vir ons lewens en vir rustigheid. Die aanvallers het mettertyd rustiger geraak,” sê Johan. Die rowers het Johan-hulle met sy eie sleutel binne die winkel toegesluit en gevlug. ‘n Bebloede Marcel kon homself loswikkel, waarna hy Johan bevry het. Hulp is kort daarna ontbied. “In ‘n mate was ons voorberei daarop. In vorige bestuursvergaderings het ons sulke situasies bespreek met die opdrag om bloot vir die ro-

wers te gee wat hulle wil hê. Mens is egter nooit voorberei vir die brutaliteit wat daarmee gepaard gaan nie,” sê Johan. Hy, Marette en Marcel moes almal mediese behandeling vir steekwonde ontvang. In Desember verlede jaar is Marette voor haar huis oorrompel, aangerand en beroof. Johan sê sy verwerk die aanval maar moeilik en almal van hulle sal moet gaan vir berading. “Die Here was vir ons ongelooflik goed dat ons nie erger seergekry het nie. Scene being set for N1 bypassing border town The scene is now being set for the construction of the proposed Musina Western Wing Road. The draft environmental impact assessment report for this project is now available for public comment. With this project the South African National Raods Agency Limited (SANRAL) intends to upgrade and construct a new section of the N1 as a ring road to the west of Musina.

The new road will link the existing carriage way to the south of Musina, just before the intersection to the military base, to the existing carriageway of the N1 to the north of Musina. An environmental impact assesment (EIA) is conducted for the proposed route in terms of the appropriate environmental regulations. The draft EIA report is now available for public comment. According to a communication by the

concerned consultant agency, Chameleon Environmental, the report will be available for review from 30 May to 30 June at the Musina municipal library and Nancefield public library. Stof veroorsaak nou mediese probleme Die langdurige padwerke in Andersonstraat, Makhado, en die gepaardgaande stof begin om mediese probleme te veroorsaak. “Elke dag loop ek in hierdie bolle stof en nou begin dit my sinusse affekteer. Dit raak nou ‘n mediese probleem,” het me. Adri Denner verlede week gesê. Die Denners woon in Andersonstraat en stap elke dag heen en weer na Hoërskool Louis Trichardt. Me. Volgens die Makhado Munisipaliteit was die begindatum van die projek in Andersonstraat 25 Mei 2011 en die voltooidatum 25 Januarie vanjaar. Die publiek het al van September laasjaar begin stof sluk. Agt maande is dus al verby en die ongerief duur net voort. “Die publiek is al moedeloos,” het een van die onderwysers by

Die pad wat foutiewelik met omtrent ‘n meter vernou was, nadat die randstene die eerste keer weerskante van die lane uitgepak is, het baie aandag getrek. Die nuwe burgemeester, Raadslid David Mutavhatsindi, is in Mei reeds ingelig van dié straat wat heeltemal te nou was. Die randstene is weer weggeneem en wag nog vir die straat om geteer te word, voordat dit teruggeplaas word.

VIP guests, employees and customers gathered outside the new branch, situated in the Noor Centre on Thursday, 24 May for the official opening. Vir elke borg, elke finansiële bydraer, elke groep, elke kerk, al die boere, elke vrywilliger en elkeen in die gemeenskap wat gehelp het om so ‘n groot sukses van die basaar te maak, sê ons baie, baie dankie. Die inwoners en die personeel het ook baie hard gewerk,” het De Bruin gesê.

Public notice for event: GlytolxTwinlinkxCOT102 Bayer CropScience AG has submitted an application to the Registrar: Genetically Modified Organisms Act for the intentional introduction of a genetically modified organism into the environment of South Africa. The genetically modified organism under study is the cotton species Gossypium hirsutum (Upland cotton), derived from the conventional cross of transformation event GHB614, named “Glytol”, the stacked cotton “TwinLink” and event COT102. Event GHB614 introduced a single copy of the 2mepsps gene from Zea mays. TwinLink cotton is derived from the conventional cross between events GHB119 and T304-40. Event GHB119 contains single copies of the bar gene from Streptomyces hygroscopicus and the cry2Ae gene from Bacillus thuringiensis. Event T304-40 introduced single copies of the bar gene from Streptomyces hygroscopicus and the cry1Ab gene from Bacillus thuringiensis. Event COT102 contains the vip3A(a) and aph4 genes originating from Bacillus thuringiensis and E. coli, respectively. The 2mepsps and bar genes provide tolerance to herbicides with the active ingredients glyphosate and glufosinateammonium, respectively. The cry1Ab, cry2Ae and vip3A(a) genes provide resistance to lepidopteran insects. The aph4 gene was used as a selectable marker in the development of COT102 whereas the 2mepsps gene was used as a selectable marker in the development of the stacked cotton. The objective of this release is to conduct an agronomic assessment of Glytol x TwinLink x COT102 in the South African cotton production environment. This application is not for the production of food or feed products. The current application is for release on multi-trial sites on farmlands in the Limpopo province near the town of Musina. The sites have been used for the production of irrigated summer and winter crops for almost 30 years. The proposed trial will not exceed 1 hectare where a minimum isolation distance of 300 m from other cotton varieties will be maintained. At the completion of the trial, all cotton plants will be harvested and the seed processed at a gin. Seeds from Glytol x TwinLink x COT102 plants will be exported to the USA for further research and development. All remaining seed will be destroyed by mechanical crushing, and all remaining trial plant material will be destroyed at the trial site by slashing. The trial site will either be left fallow or planted with a different crop. The field will be monitored for the emergence of volunteer cotton. This leaking tap was photographed on Friday, 11 May, in the men’s bathroom of the Louis Trichardt Magistrate’s Court. A defense attorney visiting the court, Mr Anton Kilian, measured the water wastage at a rate of 1 litre per 30 seconds. In a letter reporting the matter to the court manager, Me Rendani Mathalise, Kilian further points out that this amounts to a wastage of 2 880 litres of water every 24 hours. Kilian further mentioned that the tap has been leaking for at least one year. When asked to comment, Mathalise denied this and said that as soon as they became aware of the tap, she had it fixed from the court´s private funds. She also pointed out that it was not easy for the court to have their property fixed. The genetically modified organism under study is the cotton species Gossypium hirsutum (Upland cotton), derived from the conventional cross of transformation event GHB614, named “Glytol”, and the stacked cotton “TwinLink”. Event GHB614 introduced a single copy of the 2mepsps gene from Zea mays. TwinLink cotton is derived from the conventional cross between events GHB119 and T304-40. Event GHB119 contains single copies of the bar gene from Streptomyces hygroscopicus and the cry2Ae gene from Bacillus thuringiensis. Event T304-40 introduced single copies of the bar gene from Streptomyces hygroscopicus and the cry1Ab gene from Bacillus thuringiensis. The 2mepsps and bar genes provide tolerance to herbicides with the active ingredients glyphosate and glufosinateammonium, respectively. The cry1Ab and cry2Ae genes provide resistance to lepidopteran insects. The 2mepsps gene has been used as a selectable marker in the development of the stacked cotton. The objective of this release is to continue an agronomic assessment of Glytol x TwinLink in the South African cotton production environment. This application is not for the production of food or feed products. The current application is for release on multi-trial sites on farmlands in the Limpopo province near the town of Musina. The sites have been used for the production of irrigated summer and winter crops for almost 30 years. The proposed trial will not exceed 2 hectares where a minimum isolation distance of 300 m from other cotton varieties will be maintained. At the completion of the trial, all cotton plants will be harvested and the seed processed at a gin. Seeds from Glytol x TwinLink plants will be exported to the USA for further research and development. All remaining seed will be destroyed by mechanical crushing, and all remaining trial plant material will be destroyed at the trial site by slashing. The trial site will either be left fallow or planted with a different crop. The field will be monitored for the emergence of volunteer cotton. CA’s members to decide on whether or not to review change The name change of Louis Trichardt to Makhado does not sit well with each and every person in town, and in all probability the legal route will be taken to try and reverse the name change for a second time. The Chairpersons Association (CA) has called on its members to attend a meeting on 6 June to decide whether an application will be brought to the North Gauteng High Court in Pretoria to review the name change of the town from Louis Trichardt to Makhado. This follows after a CA executive committee meeting on 21 May where the name change was discussed. Arts and Culture Minister Paul Mashatile informed the Chairpersons Association on 10 May that he rejected the objection of the CA against the second name change of the town. The first time that the town’s name was changed from Louis Trichardt to Makhado was in June 2003. The objection of the CA was rejected, after which they opted for the legal route. The High Court in Pretoria heard the CA’s application for review in August 2005. Judge MK Lekgodi gave the verdict and the town’s name was Makhado.

The verdict coincided with the triumphant unveiling of the statue of King Ramabulana Makhado in September 2008. The CA appealed to the Supreme Court of Appeal in Bloemfontein, where a bench of five judges of appeal announced their ruling in March 2008 that the name change had to be set aside. The town’s name then reverted back to Louis Trichardt. In the meantime, the bust of Louis Trichardt was first hidden, then stolen and recovered and eventually placed in the municipal library, where it can still be seen. The Makhado Municipality, however, almost immediately embarked on a process to have the name revert to Makhado. The second name change to Makhado was published by the Minister in the Government Gazette of 14 October 2011. The CA lodged their objection within the prescribed period of 30 days. “The executive committee was 100% unanimous in their standpoint that we would recommend to our members that we should take the minister’s decision to court on review,” said CA chairperson Mr André Naudé.

“The principles we stood upon in 2003 are the same that we stand on in 2012: the community cannot be ignored and services must be rendered. We cannot be at the mercy of politicians who act for their own gain,” Naudé said. “All information will be given to the members at the AGM on 6 June and they will decide whether or not to give the mandate to the executive committee to proceed,” said CA secretary Ms Inga Gilfillan. In their objection, the CA emphasised that Louis Trichardt and Rasithuu Ramabulana were the first example of cooperation between the leaders of different cultural groups, finding peace in South Africa. Ramabulana was the father of Makhado. Makhado was expelled by his father because he was a troublemaker. “As opposed to the peace-seeking Louis Trichardt, Makhado was a warrior who caused a lot of suffering and pain, which is offensive to many cultural groups,” reads the objection. The CA says that their AGM will be held at the church hall of the Soutpansberg Dutch Reformed Church opposite Louis Trichardt High School at 18:00.

Die ondersoekbeampte gaan oppad terug na Pretoria die bewyse in Polokwane bekom,” het die skoolhoof, mnr. Louis Linde, gesê. Kaptein Maano Sadiki, woordvoerder van die Makhado SAPD, het Dinsdag gesê dat die lêer nie plaaslik geregistreer is nie, alhoewel dit hier oopgemaak is, en dat die lêer na Polokwane oorgeplaas is. Intussen het die skool reeds ‘n saaknommer namens hul werknemer ontvang. Provinsiale polisiewoordvoerder Kol Ronel Otto het Dinsdag bevestig dat daar in hierdie geval ‘n saak van diefstal van kontant by die Polokwane polisie aangemeld is. Polokwane polisiewoordvoerder adjudant-offisier Lesiba Ramoshaba, het gesê dat ‘n ongenoemde bedrag vanaf ABSA in Landdros Maréstraat gesteel is. “Daar is nog geen arrestasies gemaak nie, maar ons het verklarings van verskeie persone gekry en die diefstal word deur die speurtak ondersoek,” het Ramoshaba gesê.

Mayor has dream, but admits challenges The mayor of Makhado Municipality, Cllr David Mutavhatsindi, has expressed his dream for the town of Makhado. “We want it to grow to be the socio-economic hub of our municipality. As a result of the strategic location, our town or municipality has been identified as a growth point. Soon there should be huge infrastructure growth. We want it to grow into a city; it will be changed completely!” Mutavhatsindi said. He admitted, however, that there is no way that the town can be developed “if the capacity of water, sewerage and electricity is not fine”. He said that there was currently “not one area where we can say that the water supply is fine.” A reasonable standard of service for the town was described by the mayor. “I don’t expect a situation where the residents will go for even a day without water. I don’t expect a situation where streets are not user friendly; they must be without potholes. Concerning the electricity around here, we do not experience many problems, although we know very well that the capacity of the substations is very low and needs to be upgraded for further developments to take place. I am happy because I understand that, in terms of the sewer system, there is upgrading underway,” Mutavhatsindi said. In the meantime, ordinary ratepayers in town have expressed their need to have the managers and directors of their municipality live nearby and feel accountable. The posts of municipal manager and chief financial officer are two important positions that are in the process of being filled. “We need committed people who have a history here, who feel the pain of dirty water, drive the ‘potholed’ streets, see the dirt and rubbish lying around and who want to improve the town to be the beautiful town at the foot of the unique Soutpansberg mountain range that can attract tourists to improve job creation and make the economy grow. It can be done – we are committed to that as well, and offer our assistance in this matter,” wrote the chairperson of the Soutpansberg Ratepayers Association, Ms Inga Gilfillan, to Mayor Mutavhatsindi. The letter was also delivered to the MEC for Local Government and Traditional Affairs and forwarded to Premier Cassel Mathale and the ANC provincial Exco. The Chairpersons Association, of which the SRPA forms part, said that “it is our view that the municipality cannot continue to be managed by people who either do not live in this town or area, who are not known by this community and who are not trained, skilled and experienced people for these jobs. The plant will be situated on the farm Lukin 643 MS, in close proximity to the Makhado processing plant infrastructure. During construction of the mining infrastructure a temporary treatment plant is required to treat waste water from the construction camp. A second permanent sewage treatment plant is required for treating the waste water during the mining operations. Both plants are sized for 1,000 persons’ capacity. Treatment will be to the General Standard and the treated effluent will be transferred to the raw water storage dams for reuse in the processing facility and/or dust suppression on the mining site haul roads. This case “far from dead and buried” (The following letter was received in response to the article that appeared in last week’s Zoutpansberger titled “Australian government says no to pardon action”):

ell, may the opponents of this case for pardons celebrate the decision of Nicola Roxon, but from my perspective the case does not rest and deeper issues remain unanswered. As an aside, I congratulate Charles Leach on his work to better understand the events of 1901 1902. I hope my own book, yet to be released, will expose the criminality in the way these men were treated after they were arrested until sentenced. I dispute the conclusion that this case is dead and buried and that it rests with the actions of three volunteers from outback Australia! Regrettably, while so many have focused on the actions of Lieutenants Morant, Handcock and Witton, albeit that they claimed they followed orders, the British government must also be celebrating, as the attention remains focused on these three veterans instead of the brutality of British military commanders who were responsible for so much devastation in South Africa during the Anglo Boer war. For the record, I have never condoned the killing of innocent civilians and while Nicola Roxon’s letter to me advised that supporting the case for pardons may send the wrong message involving serious war crimes, nothing was said about addressing the denial of due legal process, including appeal rights in the manner in which these men were dealt with by British commanders. Frankly, the abuse of due process should remain a focus in the present, drawing from the events of 1902. Denying these three volunteers due process is just as reprehensible as the tactics used by the British military to prosecute the war against the Boers. I was informed by the Australian Attorney General that there was no consensus about the case for pardons. I agreed, but I also argued that the case was about denial of procedural fairness according to the laws of 1902. Apparently, while so many celebrate the view that Morant

et al deserved what they got, very few understand that the case I have advocated is about exposing three matters: * the brutality of the crimes committed by the British military during the Boer; * no senior British officers (with the exception of Captain Picton who was cashiered) were held to account for orders not to take prisoners and * the trial and sentencing laws and procedure of 1902 were flouted to secure an outcome to deflect attention to military commanders, including Lord Kitchener and his policies to prosecute the war. This case has a permanent place in the Australian psych. It is also about the principle of a fair go! The case will continue to attract controversy and until it is considered by a tribunal independent of political considerations and agendas, most Australians will continue to believe that these men (as so often happens in wars) were held responsible for the behaviours of their superiors. Your readers should also know that Ms Roxon’s decision was not that of her predecessor, Robert McClelland, MP. In late 2011, Robert declared that the case raised serious doubts about how these men were treated. It beggars belief that the two most senior law officers of the Commonwealth could come to different conclusions. It will be interesting how this divergence is played out by an independent judicial tribunal. The Anglo / Boer war was brutal and so many innocent civilians suffered as a result of the policies of the British War office and commanders like Lord Kitchener. While some readers will be content to know of the Australian government’s decision, I must state, while the attention has remained on Morant, Handcock and Witton, the British Government, selected historians and interest groups can rest easy knowing the attention remains deflected from the actions of the British military. eagte mev. “ Gelukkig is ek aan die verkeerde kant van 40, my kinders klaar groot gemaak ”. Vir jou wil ek sê en vra: Sies, skaam jou! Het jy geen skaamte en integriteit om so van ons gemeenskap se gemoedere asblikke te maak met die snert wat jy kwytraak nie? Ek stem heelhartig saam met jou oproep om “Sê-net-nee Klubs” wyd en syd te stig. Brei dit uit om eerstens in te sluit, “sê net nee vir liefdelose, lasterlike en kwaadwillige geskinder en agterdog wek met valse en ongegronde aannames en aantygings”. Doen asseblief volgende keer, voordat jy briewe rig aan die gemeenskap, eers die eerbare ding en moeite om jou te vergewis van die ware feite en dit saam met jou brief as motivering te laat plaas. My vraag is net, waar kry ‘n vrou aan die verkeerde kant van 40 en wie se kinders klaar grootgemaak is al haar sogenaamde inligting? Dit wil voorkom of jy aan slaaploosheid ly en dus genoeg tyd op hande het om voor ons kinders se kuierplekke en daar waar instansies fondse insamel vir liefdadigheid, te skuil om te sien hoe vroeg in die oggendure, in watter toestande en saam met wie hulle huiswaarts keer en wat dan by die huise gebeur. Maar dan besef ek

dit is seker nie so nie, andersins sou jy met ware feite na vore kom en juis dit doen jy nie. Daar is natuurlik ook die moontlikheid dat jy ernstig ly aan leë-nessindroom, oorgangsjare en skinderbek vriendskappe (drie baie ernstige toestande wat nooit ligtelik opge neem durfword nie). Dit kan hallu sinasies en ander versteurings tot gevolg hê. Sou dit die geval wees, beveel ek aan dat professionele hulp so gou moontlik ingewin word. Al hierdie spekulasies oor wat jou sover sou bring om jou snert kwyt te raak, kan moontlik verkeerd wees. Jy is moontlik werklik so besorgd oor ons jongmense en hoeveel van hulle oor naweke “ opgeneem” word vir ondermeer ‘n oordosis dwelms of verdowingsmiddels, beserings en aanrandings. Nou is my vraag egter: Waarom bied jy nie, in liefde ter wille van ons jongmense, o ja, en ook ter wille van ons as hulle ouers, oor naweke en na-ure vrywillige hulp, onderskraging en leiding by die instansies van opname nie? Eers dan sou jou skrywe aan die Zoutpansberger waarde hê, maar ek is bevrees jy het jouself ontmasker as een van die kwaadwillige skinderbekke van die dorp. Wys ons die dronk, gerookte tieners

n reaksie op die brief onder die opskrif “Kom ons leer ons jongmense om nee te sê vir dwelms en ja vir lewe.” Liewe Anonieme skrywer. As jy self sulke etiese standaarde, norme en waardes het, waarom jou identi teit weerhou? Wil so ‘n voorbeeld van ‘n mens dan nie hê die gemeenskap moet weet wie jy is nie? “Kuierplekke in die dorp het ontaard in ‘n dwelmnes” is darem ‘n baie sterk aantyging om te maak, aangesien daar maar bitter min kuierplekke is, en ons dit sien as ‘n direkte beskuldiging. Ons wil net graag weet hoe lyk ‘n “dwelmsnes” en ook dronk, gerookte tieners, aangesien tieners beslis nie in ons kuierplek toegelaat word nie. Ons weet ook nie by watter kuierplek die sogenaamde leraar van ons dorp

tot 04:00 in die oggend kuier nie, aangesien die Wet ons verplig om reeds om 02:00 toe te wees. Ons weet ongelukkig nie wat in die res van die dorp op Vrydag- en Saterdagaande gebeur nie, waar tieners hulle bevind en waarmee hulle besig is nie. Ouers moet ongelukkig self vir hulle minderjarige kinders verantwoordelikheid neem. Onaanvaarbare gedrag word nie by ons kuierplek toegelaat nie en ons werk saam met die polisie om misdaad te bekamp en reëls toe te pas. Michaela Gilﬁllan, elfjarige tennisspeler van Laerskool Louis Trichardt, het aan ‘n interprovinsiale tennistoernooi deelgeneem as deel van die Limpopospan. Ses provinsies het meegeding tydens die interprovinsiale tennistoernooi wat van 27 tot 30 April in Pretoria aangebied is. Gauteng Noord se junior tennisvereniging was die gasheer en die deelnemende spanne het gekom van Limpopo, Vrystaat, Mpumalanga, Noordwes, Guateng-Noord en Gauteng-Oos. Die ouderdomsgroepe O/12,O/14 en O/16 het deelgeneem en elke ouderdomsgroep is verteenwoordig deur vier seuns en vier meisies van ‘n provinsie. Limpopo eindig algeheel in die vyfde posisie. Michaela wen twee enkelspel wedstryde en verloor drie. In die dubbelspel wedstryde wen Michaela en haar maat een wedstryd en verloor vier, terwyl sy en haar maat in die gemengde dubbels twee wedstryde wen en drie verloor. “Die standaard van die tennis tydens die hele toernooi was van uitstaande gehalte. Baie van die wedstryde het naelbyt eindes gehad,” sê Michaela se pa, Rampie.

2012 Hangklip Posduifklub-nuus. Week 2 WEEK 2 - Warmbad Die Hangklip Posduif Klub se twee wedvlugte het die afgelope naweek vanaf Warmbad plaasgevind oor ‘n afstand van 250km. Die lede kon 18 duiwe per wedvlug inskryf met 5 wat kon tel vir n plek. Die eerste 40 duiwe verdien punte. Slegs die eerste duif van elke lid se punte tel vir die klubkampioenskap. Die eerste wedvlug , die jongduif kompetisie, word soos laas naweek, deur Nick Enslin gewen

met Eric Nel 2de. Oom Nick klok ook 3e,4e en 5de. In die Ope wedvlug wen Oom Nick die 1ste en 2de plekke met Royal Hokke van Gerhard Bezuidenhout 3de en 4de. Baie geluk aan oom Nick wat so op sy verjaarsdag so goed gevlieg het! Mag jy nog lank vir ons Klub gespaar bly Oom Nick! Geluk ook aan al die ander lede met hulle prestasies behaal. Ons vlieg volgende naweek van Koedoeskop oor ‘n afstand van 225km - Sterkte aan almal.

Rondebosch Riding School outside Makhado held an open day on 19 May where adults and children were treated to pony, horse and cart rides after some of the riding school’s pupils had gone through their paces. The day started with a “postman´s chase” performed by four of the young ones in the beginners class, followed by a “barrel race”. Next up was the intermediate class, manoeuvring their horses through various obstacles, followed by the school´s advanced riders performing a musical ride. Die Louis Trichardt Rolbalklub is weer die wenners van die Koperbeker. Die stryd rondom die Koperbeker word die afgelope vyf jaar tussen Louis Trichardt klub, Tshipise en die Eiland beslis. Vanjaar was Louis Trichardt eerste, Eiland tweede en Tshipise derde. Die beker self is van soliede koper en is in 1952 gemaak toe die kopermyn in Musina nog in bedryf was. Aanvanklik het net Louis Trichardt en Musina om die beker meegeding, maar met die sluiting van die rolbalklub in Musina het die tradisie vir baie jare gestop. Afgeneem is die span van Louis Trichardt wat voorverlede naweek die beker ingepalm het. Foto verskaf.

Blyplek word nog benodig Met vanjaar se Kremetart Fietswed ren wat plaasvind 8 tot 10 Junie is akkommodasie vir besoekers besig om ‘n ernstige kopseer te raak vir die organiseerders. Die Kremetart lok jaarliks meer as ‘n duisend deelnemers en ondersteuners wat op Makhado toesak vir deelname aan hierdie gewilde fietswedrenne. Volgens die organiseerders het hulle egter reeds talle navrae gekry rondom akkommodasie. Derhalwe word ‘n beroep gedoen op enige iemand wat dalk slaapplek of akkommodasie beskikbaar het om vir Paula so spoedig moontlik te skakel by tel. 072 595 0274. Daar is ook steeds tyd om ‘n stalletjie te bespreek by die inligtingsentrum. ‘n Uitstalruimte kos R300 vir drie dae (vanaf Vrydag tot Sondag ná die bergfietsafdeling). Om ‘n stalletjie te bespreek, skakel Jandré by 083 288 5426.

Mnr. Floris Prinsloo van Louis Trichardt Brake and Clutch het pragtige baadjies vir die eerste rugbyspan geborg. Saam met die span verskyn mnr. Prinsloo (links) en mnr. Johan Minnie (rugby-organiseerder).

Mnr. Eddie Schlesinger (links) van Werda Toyota Motorhandelaars het waterbottels en petjies geborg vir die eerste netbalspan van Hoërskool Louis Trichardt. Saam met die span verskyn me. Anri Viljoen, die skool se netbalorganiseerder.

Hierdie paaie sal op 9 Junie gesluit wees Inwoners word gemaan dat verskeie strate in Makhado vir gedeeltes van die dag of die hele dag gesluit gaan wees op 9 Junie tydens die jaarlikse Kremetart ﬁetswedrenne. Met die fietsryers wat op die N1 wegspring, sal die gedeelte van die nasionale hoofweg tussen 05:30 en 07:45 heeltemal gesluit wees. As alternatief kan Hlangananistraat gebruik word. Volgens die Makhado Munisipaliteit sal konstruksiewerk aan Stubbsstraat reeds voltooi wees, sodat inwoners ook dié straat kan

gebruik as alternatiewe roete. Songozwistraat tussen die N1 en Groblerstraat sal ook om 05:30 sluit, maar eers weer om 12:30 open. Dit sal weer sluit vanaf 15:00 tot 18:00. Die N1 tussen Rissik- en Songozwistraat sal vanaf 12:00 tot 18:00 gesluit wees. As alternatief kan Oranjestraat in Eltivillas gebruik word as deurgangsroete na die Thohoyandou-pad. Die hele Rissikstraat sal vanaf 08:00 tot 18:00 gesluit wees, alhoewel verkeer deurgelaat sal word by die Celliers-, Krogh-,

Kruger en Groblerstraat kruisings. As alternatief kan inwoners Jeppestraat gebruik. Om die dorp sal die N1-noord, Waterpoort/Vivo-pad en Vivo/ Makhado-pad ook vir gedeeltes van die dag gesluit wees, of daar sal slegs enkelbaanverkeer wees. Verkeersvertragings kan derhalwe vanaf 06:00 tot 08:30 op die N1-noord verwag word, vanaf 06:00 tot 11:00 op die N1/ Waterpoort-pad, vanaf 06:00 tot 13:00 op die Waterpoort/Vivopad en vanaf 08:00 tot 17:30 op die Vivo/Makhado-pad. Laerskool Messina se O/11-netbalspannetjie het rede om breed te glimlag, nadat hulle na aﬂoop van ‘n byeenkoms by Laerskool Louis Trichardt op 26 Mei aangewys is as Vhembe wenners. Afrigter mev. M. van Niekerk is trots op haar span en het hulle sterkte toegewens vir die provinsiale kampioenskappe wat op 1 Junie in Polokwane beslis word. Voor, van links na regs, is spanlede T. Nthala, T. Drie netbalspanne van Laerskool Louis Trichardt dring deur na die Limpopo netbalkampioenskappe, na aﬂoop van die Vhembe distrikkampioenskappe op 26 Mei. Voor is die O/11A-span en in die middel die O/12A-span, wat albei eerste in die Vhembe distrik geëindig het. Agter is die O/13A’s, wat tweede in die distrik was. Die O/13A’s bedank mnr. Tonie Bekker van die Spur wat hulle bederf het met Spur-burgers. Die voorste spannetjie vertoon van die Spur houers.

‘n Voormalige inwoner en perdeliefhebber van Makhado, wat ook voorsitter van die Zoutpansberg Ruiterklub was, het tydens sy verblyf in die dorp ‘n indrukwekkende wisseltrofee aan die klub geskenk. Die trofee bestaan uit ‘n treffende gemonteerde beeld van ‘n perd en word jaarliks toegeken aan die aktiefste ruiter van die betrokke jaar. In die foto staan Tielman van den Berg met dié sierlike trofee, wat hy in 2002, 2006 en 2011 verower het. Hy staan by sy Suid-Afrikaanse Boerperd met die naam Vlam, want, sê Tielman, “hy is vuur en vlam - die ruiter moet sy sit in die saal ken, anders sit jy op die grond!” Foto verskaf.

Lappies Labuschagne van Hoërskool Louis Trichardt se eerste hokkiespan in aksie tydens Saterdag se wedstryd teen Hoërskool Pietersburg (PHS). Louis Trichardt se span het een van hulle beste vertonings die afgelope seisoen gelewer, maar het uiteindelik 2-0 verloor. Louis Trichardt se O/14-seuns het verras deur PHS 1-0 te klop, terwyl die O/16-seuns 1-3 verloor het.

Karatekas from the Louis Trichardt Shukokai Karate Club did very well at the northern region championships where South Africa, Zimbabwe and Mozambique competed. The championships were held in Brakpan on 18 and 19 May. With sensei De Wet van Wyk are the young club members who took part. They are, from left to right, Connor Gilbert, Matthew Taylor, Ryan Gilbert en Jordan Mocke. Ryan was ﬁrst with gold for kumité, with Jordan second (silver) in kata. Sensei De Wet won gold in kata en bronze for kumité.
