Rival family ask court permission to exhume Chief’s remains The battle for the Madzivhandila chieftainship, which has been going since the death of Chief Andries Mavhungu Madzivhandila, has taken another turn.

The real-life drama, which has seen members of the family hauling each other before the courts, is between Elvis Madzivhandila and Chief Thikhathali Madzivhandila, who took over the late chief Andries Mavhungu Madzivhandila’s throne.

Elvis Madzivhandila has filed papers with the Limpopo High Court in Thohoyandou in which he disputes the paternity of Thikhathali Madzivhandila, alleging that he is not the biological child of the late Andries Madzivhandila.

He argues that Thikhathali was born out of an adulterous affair by his mother and a certain principal, which makes him unfit to lead the clan.

If Elvis Madzivhandila has his way and is granted permission by the courts, the late Chief Madzivhandila’s remains are to be exhumed for DNA testing.

In the court papers, Elvis contends that the royal council illegally deprived his brother, Bukuta Madzivhandila, of the right to ascend his father’s throne. “This matter has been going for a long time, with no resolve in sight. The family has failed to resolve the issue internally; thus we hope that scientific testing will free both parties once and for all.

testing we are going to prove that Thikhathali is not the biological child of Chief Madzivhandila,” said Elvis Madzivhandila.

He said they were going to force Thikhathali to do a DNA test. Should he refuse, it will imply that he is not the biological child of the late Chief Andries Madzivhandila, they argue. “They know that the truth will come out at long last,” added Elvis Madzivhandila.

The royal council, which has been named as a respondent, has made it clear that it will oppose the application.

“We have already filed opposing papers at the court and we will never allow our late chief to be degraded in this manner. Never in the history has it happened that the bones of a chief have had to be exhumed to determine the paternity of his children. This is a disgrace not only to the Madzivhandila family, but to the whole Vhavenda and African nation,” said Chief Tshifovhedze Madzivhandila of the Madzivhandila Royal Council.

He said the applicant was a sore loser who, when his preferred candidate for chieftainship was not considered, resorted to sinister methods to further his own agenda. “This man has a problem. The whole family is against the exhumation. They will stand by us and we know it will not happen,” said Tshifovhedze.

Madzivhandila passed away in July 2010 and Thikhathali Madzivhandila ascended the throne as per tradition and custom in the family.

Chieftainship battles are age-old phenomena in the Vhavenda nation.

The most prominent battle has been the Vhavenda kingship battle in which the Vhangona, Mphaphulis and Tshivhases were disputing the ascen-

dency of Khosikhulu Toni Mphephu as king of the Vhavenda. The matter went to the courts and they ruled in favour of Toni Mphephu, but the Tshivhase clan still lodged an appeal against the judgement.

Residents in the Tshitale area had to learn of yet another drowning the past week. Kabelo Nonyane (15) a grade 8 pupil at the Mainganye Secondary School drowned on Tuesday afternoon while swimming with friends in a stream near Madadzhi. Family members as well as other members of the community spend the night at the stream while police divers searched for the body. The search continued the following day when the divers finally retrieved the body. A cousin of the deceased, Samuel Samphenyana, thanked the community for all the support. He said the funeral will be held next Saturday (9 March). In the photo a forensic officer checks the body shortly after it was retrieved from the water.

Everyone who had come to attend the trial was asked to leave the court room as the victim could not continue. After the court had been evacuated, the trial continued. The 33-year-old woman from Makwarela, who is witness number 8 for the state, had just started testifying when she broke down.

The previous day, Dr Milingoni Makhwanya, who had examined the Malamulele victim at Tshilidzini hospital, testified.

On the same day, one of the alleged victims, a 22-yearold woman from Nzhelele, who was allegedly raped at a surgery in Makhuvha, testified for the most part of the day. Her husband also testified.

Mulaudzi, a clinical manager at Hayani Hos-

pital, is standing trial on four counts of rape. He is alleged to have raped two of his patients during consultations at a private practice at Ha-Makhuvha, outside Thohoyandou. The incidents are alleged to have taken place two years ago.

The Malamulele case was opened while Mulaudzi was working as a doctor at the Malamulele Hospital in 2006. The case, which was subsequently withdrawn at the time, due to a lack of evidence, was reinstated this year after persistent complaints by the victim that the case had not been handled properly.

On Tuesday, the case was postponed to 6 May 2013.

The presiding magistrate in the case is Mike Coetzee; Adv Christopher Burke represents the State, while Adv Essau Ngwaa is representing Mulaudzi after his former attorney, Adv Anton Ramaano, left him, citing a lack of consultation.

Situation still unresolved at local AFB Meetings and negotiations with regard to the future of Denel’s AMG members at AFB Makhado are still in progress.

Members of the unit are directly involved in the maintenance of the Hawks and Gripens at the base.

According to earlier reports, these members faced retrenchment as their contracts will not

be renewed when these expire on 31 March.

The acting officer commanding of AFB Makhado, Lt Col F van Zyl, said in response to a media enquiry this week that various meetings between the SAAF, Denel (AMG) and the unions had taken place. He said an official press release would be published by the SAAF in

due time.

According to press reports early this week, the secretary of the Department of Defence indicated that the department prefered to develop its own internal capacity for the maintenance of its aircraft and helicopters.

With regard to the electricity crisis at the base, the situation remains unchanged.

The executive mayor for the Vhembe District Municipality, Councillor Tshitereke Matibe, has paid tribute to Fhatuwani Ramabulana of Maneledzi High School, who represented the province at national level in the mathematics and physical science competition.

Besides coming from one of the less-developed rural areas of Venda in Sinthumule, Ramabulana took position three in this prestigious competition at national level. Matibe also saluted Makhado

Mayor David Mutavhatsindi and Chief Sinthumule for supporting the school programmes that produced students like Ramabulana. He said he was proud that Vhembe remained the home of excellence in education, where the district continued to lead other districts in the province. Vhembe has exceeded both the national and provincial pass rate by achieving 76.8%.

“We are pleased to note that both national government and the province are depending on Vhembe for producing better physical science and mathematics results. Vhembe District Municipality has assisted more than 100 students from needy families by giving them R30 000 worth of bursaries each. More than 95% of these students are from rural areas. In addition, the Services Seta is currently assisting 20 students from our area by meeting all their needs for the duration of the whole diploma or degree programme.”

Matibe also welcomed the initiative taken by local mayors to set aside funds for bursary schemes in their respective municipalities. “This confirms that Vhembe is indeed committed to the eradication of the unskilled human resource base.” He also appealed to traditional leaders to work closely with their municipalities and councillors to identify learners from poor families, so that they can be assisted with their studies.

“Tsonga leaders’ status must be restored” A movement is afoot to restore the status of Tsonga traditional leaders.

In the keynote address at the celebrations of the Vanhlanganu at Bushbuckridge last Saturday, Mr Risimati Wilson Mkhari gave an overview of the history of the Tsonga tribes in South Africa and called on all Tsonga traditional leaders to stand together as one.

He said: “We all know the developments in our country where the status of many of our leaders was reduced. Many of us who were kings have been reduced to chiefs and those who were chiefs reduced to headmen and labelled as so-called ‘independent headmen’.”

He appealed to the commission of traditional leadership disputes and claims to restore the majority of the chiefs who have filed claims with them.

He said the Nhlanganu tribe could be one of the earliest Tsonga tribes. “It is estimated that the Tsonga people were here in southern Africa before 1400. Many other tribes that we currently have in South Africa came after 1400.”

He challenged the suggestion that the Tsonga are relatively recent entrants in South Africa and said the Tsonga were in fact among the very first ethnic groups to settle in this part of the world. He said historical records suggest that when many of the so-called Nguni people arrived from central Africa, the Tsonga Nhlanganu tribesmen were already here. “We had a large country, stretching from the Olifants River in the north, up to the east coast, including the present-day Swaziland and

many areas in the Maputo Province in Mozambique and KwaZulu-Natal.”

“We, the Nhlanganu, have produced many tribes in Southern Africa, yet our history and culture are often underestimated. That’s why many of you may not know that the Mkhari are part of the Nhlanganu and that the Vanhlanganu are not only those based in Mpumalanga today. Many other tribes that originated from here are now found in Mozambique, KwaZulu-Natal and Limpopo,” said Mkhari.

“If you cannot fix the sewerage system then find us another place to stay” A family sits down in the shade of a mango tree, drinking some tea on a sunny morning. Not far away from them is an odorous trench which was dug from the sewerage mainline to divert the seemingly uncontrollable sewage onto the open, bushy ground which lies only about 15 metres away from them.

Not long ago, on 18 January, the Limpopo Mirror reported on the dysfunctional sewerage system in Tshikota. The article followed after concerned residents had contacted the newspaper's offices, complaining about the perpetual problem of open sewers.

“They came and repaired the sewer which ran along the street, but never addressed the main problem, which is a smelly trench next to our house,” Elisa Ndou says. She stays at 1216, a residential house which has become like a terrible plague to the ears of the officials in the municipality. “Each time we call to report the matter, they say 'Oh, 1216! It's you again?'”

As a result of the trench of odorous sewage, residents can hardly eat any food in their own houses as green, dizzy flies come to rest on their plates of food.

Ndou still maintains that the municipality must try to fix the sewer problem effectively, or else they must find them another place to stay. “Why must we live in faeces? What wrong did we do to deserve this kind of treatment from our own municipality?”

In a separate case, Ms Saneta Stuurman's Peace Fast Food business is negatively affected by a stinking, simmering sewer which spills over a few metres from her business near the Bar Lounge.

“Learners no longer want to sit at the tables, because of the unpleasant smell coming from the spilling sewage,” says Ms Stuurman. “The stench was so terrible on Sunday that I couldn't even open for business. I've been operating this place for the past three years and I've never lost business like now.”

When contacted for comment, the spokesperson

for the Makhado Municipality, Mr Louis Bobodi, said that the municipality is endeavouring with almost every possible effort to get the situation under control. “We are currently opening that line at Padkamp in order to address it permanently,” said Bobodi. “The Padkamp issue will also address Peace Fast Food and Bar Lounge.”

Bobodi said that the open trench would be closed by the end of business on Friday, but he didn't give any reason for why the municipality had failed do so. “All the reports have been received and the mayor and the technical director have been to the site already,” he says. “We are using HTH chlorine to minimise the stench.”

Hardware store robbed at Nzhelele The SAPS at Siloam are investigating a case of armed robbery which happened at Vhutuwangadzebu in the Nzhelele area on 21 February, at about 16:45.

According to reports, four men from a local hardware store were robbed of an undisclosed amount of cash.

Safvan Patel, an assistant in the hardware store, says that they had just closed up the shop and were busy preparing to leave when they noticed a red Toyota Tazz parked outside the yard.

into their vehicle, the red sedan approached them and parked in front of them.

Four armed men jumped out of the car and surrounded the men’s car while pointing guns at the occupants. They started to hit the windows with guns while ordering the occupants to open the doors.

According to Patel, the suspects eventually managed to gain entry into the car and hit two men on their heads with guns before taking an undisclosed amount of cash. The robbers then fled the scene.

Three of the four men who were inside the car that got robbed suffered head injuries and the other one suffered an eye injury as the broken pieces of glass got into his eyes.

The shop owner, Mr Samsuddin Patel, said that the incident had affected his shop financially as the money which the robbers fled with was supposed to pay some suppliers.

The spokesperson for the Siloam police, W/O Edzisani Tharaga, confirmed that the police have opened a case of armed robbery and assault.

The SANCO cluster in the Waterval region is accusing the Makhado Municipality’s ward councillors of practising nepotism, favouritism and total malpractice when they informed the communities of the call for the submission of CVs for employment at the new Elim Mall.

According to Waterval region’s SANCO cluster chairperson Mr Alex Makhacani, the project community liaison officer, Ms Basani Tlakula, normally liaises with the ward councillors when there is a need for local residents to submit CVs for job placements in the soon-to-open shopping mall. It is then the ward councillors’ duty to inform all members of the community within their respective wards that a call for a submission of CVs has been made.

On Thursday last week, the representatives from 12 wards travelled to Elim to meet Ms Tlakula to discuss issues of job placement or selection, so that they could find a mutual way to resolve the problem. According to the chairperson of the Njhakanjhaka Traditional Council, Mr Vicky Muvhali, the meeting was supposed to be held at 15:00, but Tlakula left for Gauteng at exactly the same time.

“It’s true that I had an appointment with the SANCO people, but I told them that I would only be available at 10:00 in the morning,” said Ms Tlakula. “I will schedule another meeting with them, where the time will suit all the parties.” She emphasised that no councillors have the power to employ or recommend certain persons for jobs at the shopping mall. “Even I don’t have those powers,” Tlakula said. “Even if it were possible for councillors to send their friends as much as they can, it wouldn’t work for them.

There are boxes at the site where interested persons must insert their job applications.”

According to Tlakula, the main businesses at the new mall, namely Shoprite and Boxer, have agreed to employ at least 80% local people.

“They will bring with them 20% of the workforce,” she said.

“So, I think, the local people should be happy about that.” khacani says that they have had enough of councillors who use their leadership positions to achieve personal gains. “We want councillors to inform people, and not just people, but all people,” he said. “Only then would applicants know when, where and how to submit their CVs. These people (councillors) are denying the

community a simple but rightful thing – information. They have been practicing nepotism and favouritism from the beginning of the construction and it is not a good thing.”

Cllr Sipho Masuka (Ward 15) said that he could not comment directly on the matter, but he quickly added that he had been informing people from his ward all the time about the new mall project, whenever there was a need. “To apply for a job, you don’t need a councillor’s permission,” he said.

“However, the rate of unemployment is very high and people must be assisted to make or get work,” continued Masuka. “People are advised not to undermine ward councillors when they call ward meetings. I can only say that we should stop bickering among ourselves over petty issues and start encouraging development in our area.”

The SANCO cluster, however, says that they have requested a meeting with the mayor of the Makhado Municipality, Cllr David Muthavatsindi, which has already been scheduled for Thursday (28 February) to discuss the matter.

Meanwhile, the Elim Mall has reached completion stage and is set to open business on 28 March.

Motorists up in arms about municipality’s road repair project The Makhado Municipality’s most recent attempt at repairing the town’s dilapidated streets had motorists fuming last week.

On Monday, 18 February, a truck was spotted spraying a layer of tar on the road surface in President Street between Songozwi and Rissik Street.

The previous day, tar was also sprayed in Devenish

Street between President and Grobler Street. In both instances, no warning signs could be seen anywhere, causing many a motorists to drive onto the wet tar. The result was tar-covered vehicles.

“I had to, at my own expense, remove the tar from my vehicle. The least they could do was to warn motorists that the tar is wet,” remarked resi-

Questions also arose as to what exactly the municipality aimed to achieve by spraying the road surface with tar. The road surface itself was not even swept of debris before spraying took place, with a large amount of the wet tar merely running off into the storm-water drainage system.

“At first I thought it was water running into the storm drains but was completely dumfounded to see that it was tar,” remarked Luies. Asked who the contractor responsible for the project was, municipal spokesperson Mr Louis Bobodi indicated that it was Fantique Trade 786 CC Construction.

The name might ring a bell with readers, as it is the same company responsible for the yet-to-befinished Munnik-, Stubbs- and Anderson Street.

Bobodi further said that the spraying of the tar forms part of the municipality’s maintenance and street rehabilitation program. As for the absence of warning signs, Bobodi said that this aspect of the project was the contractor’s responsibility. Asked who was supervising the project, Bobodi said that it was Dombo and Du Plessis Consulting Engineers. They are also the consulting engineers on the unfinished road works in Munnik-, Stubbs- and Anderson Street. Bobodi supplied no answer when asked whether the project was done according to specifications and what the next step with regard to rehabilitating the streets would be.

Vhembe House of Traditional Leaders opened The Vhembe House of Traditional Leaders was officially opened last week February (22nd).

The house was officially opened by Vhembe District Municipality’s executive mayor, Cllr Tshitereke Matibe, during a function held at Ha-Manenzhe village in the Mutale district.

Accompanying Matibe were Makhado Mayor David Mutavhatsindi, Thulamela Mayor Grace Mahosi, Mutale Mayor Josephina Mukwevho and Cllr Simon Madamalala, who was representing Musina Mayor Carol Phiri.

Hosi David Nxumalo, chairperson of the House of the Traditional Leaders in Vhembe,

officiated during the ceremony, which was also attended by Kgosi Malesela Dikgale, who is the chairperson of the same house in the province, together with other senior members of the house in the province and locally.

During the function, Matibe said the municipality would continue giving support to the house in every possible way.

The district municipality has also set aside a budget of R400 000 to support the house in its programmes. Nxumalo said the house was more than committed to working with the district and local municipalities to make sure that there was delivery of service to the community.

Ndou, who is the the senior manager in the Department of Cooperative Governance, Human Settlements & Traditional Affairs, responsible for traditional issues, said the official opening of the house at Ha-Hamanenzhe was “very successful. It is the first time that I see that the district mayor and local mayors support to our event like what has happened here. I am also impressed with the attendance, which was more than what we expected.”

Community members arrived in numbers to attend this special event, where they were entertained by a ZCC brass band, traditional groups, Xigubu, a Hip-Hop group and a Xingondo group.

Two arrested for unlicensed firearm The Makhado police arrested two suspects, aged 30 and 33, in connection with the possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition on Friday.

According to the spokesperson for the Makhado police, Capt Maano Sadiki, the police were doing

a routine patrol in town when they spotted the two suspects.

The suspects were searched and a firearm was found in their possession. In separate incidents, a 27-year-old man was arrested in connection with a case of copper theft, while another suspect (25) was found in possession of stolen goods. The goods were later identified as having been stolen from a motor vehicle on 22 February.

A 19-year-old suspect was arrested for housebreaking and theft on the same day. “The suspect is being linked with a number of other housebreaking cases in and around town,” said Capt Sadiki. Sadiki added that all suspects will appear in court soon.

“Legitimate” local structure for SANCO After almost five years of parallel SANCO structures in Vhembe, a “legitimate” structure was born and finally launched over the past weekend.

The launch coincided with the much-awaited regional conference held at the Thohoyandou Library auditorium on Sunday. Noticeably absent during the meeting was the leader of the other faction, Chief Progress Kutama.

The Limpopo Provincial SANCO leadership, led by its chairperson, Masekoameng Mesina, oversaw the elections.

Gilbert Kganyago, the Limpopo provincial secretary of the SACP, was also present.

During the conference, Magdeline Netshaulu was elected the chairperson of the new structure. She will be assisted by Percy Masevhe as her deputy. Thiathu Ravhura, who is also Mutale Municipality’s spokesperson, was elected secretary, with Melda Makwarela as his deputy. Old-time political activist Tshililo Manzere was

elected treasurer, while Hangwani Madzhie was elected the organizing secretary.

Speaking during the conference, SANCO Limpopo provincial secretary Jack Maphoso warned all those who were operating parallel structures to desist from doing so, saying they should support the legitimate structure they launched.

He warned that severe disciplinary action would be taken against those undermining the new structure.

“We told them to disband and dissolve and go back to their branches, which is a directive from national office. We know there are people out there like Kutama who are going all out to confuse our people,” said Maphoso.

He said they were mandated by the national office to investigate the activities of the parallel structures and urged all who had receipts for payment of monies to make them available to the leadership.

those who took money from members fraudulently. This is a serious offence and those responsible will not get away with it,” he said. He said all institutions and organisations would henceforth be informed of the legitimate structure within which they should work.

After being elected as chairperson of the new committee, Magdeline Netshaulu said as a committee they were going to work hard in redeeming SANCO to its rightful position in the community.

“We are going to launch branches, sub-regions and also foster relationships with traditional leaders for the sake of service delivery in our communities. We know there are challenges when it comes to education and the health system in our province. This we will deal with for the benefit of our communities, “she said.

She said they were going also to engage the municipalities and seek ways on how best they could bring services to the communities.

New toll tariffs on highway will be charged from 7 March As from 7 March, motorists travelling south along the N1 will have to fork out a little more in toll fees due to the South African National Road Agency Limited’s (SANRAL) annual toll tariff adjustment.

This annual adjustment is effective on all national toll routes in the country. The tariffs are adjusted in accordance with the preceding 12 months’ consumer price index (CPI).

“Funding for the national road network is decided in the context of all other pressing demands on the fiscus. Given this challenge on the fiscus and the fact that South

Africa’s road infrastructure requires substantial and urgent investment, SANRAL thus relies on the user-pay principle to maintain a high-quality road network while contributing to improved road safety and generally shorter travelling distances. This also results in substantial savings on vehicle running costs. The toll principle also allows us to preserve and provide infrastructure sooner than traditional tax-based revenues would allow,” said Nazir Alli, chief executive officer of SANRAL. The toll adjustment on the N1 south from Musina tot Gauteng as from 7 March is as follows (in brack-

ets is the current price): For the Baobab toll plaza, the adjustment for all light vehicles (Class 1) is R32 (R31) and R88 (R83) for two-axle heavy vehicles (Class 2). For three- and four-axle heavy vehicles (Class 3), the new toll tariff is R121 (R115) and R146 (R138) for five- and more-axle heavy vehicles (Class 4). The new toll tariff for Class 1 vehicles at the Capricorn toll plaza is R33 (R32), R92 (R87) for Class 2 vehicles, R107 (R102) for Class 3 vehicles and R135 (R127) for Class 4 vehicles.

Woman fumes after being hit by rock A 39-year-old woman working at one of the supermarkets in Thohoyandou is fuming after sustaining injuries to her leg after being hit by a stone. Nthangeni was hit by a rock thrown up by a tractor belonging to the Thulamela Municipality while on her way to work three weeks ago.

Olga Nthangeni of Thohoyandou P West, who works at the deli at Spar Thohoyandou, said she was taking a medical letter to her employers after she had sustained injuries during an armed robbery the previous night. “I was injured on my hand when I was attacked by a gun-wielding robber who tried to rob me the previous night, and I felt that I could not work in my condition. I was on my way to my employer when I felt a piercing pain in my leg,” she said.

Olga said she was bleeding profusely when she found out that she had been hit by a stone flung up by a tractor that was cutting grass at the local sports grounds. “I saw the rock coming towards me, but I could not run away as there were cars in the busy street,” she said.

She said after the incident she was taken to the hospital by the tractor driver’s supervisor, who promised that they would visit her after the treatment. According to Olga, she was left at the hospital in pain and no one from the municipality bothered to come back and check on her condition.

“I am very angry with the municipality. They never bothered to come and take me home after the treatment. I had to phone my husband, who came and took me home,” she said.

She said after being given four days off work by the doctor, she tried opening a case with the police, who refused to do so, saying it is an “incident.” She went to the municipality the following day, where she was told that it had been an accident and they could not do anything about it.

“It is their tractor that got me injured. I was not able to go to work for some days and I do not know how far the injury has affected me. I want the municipality to pay for the damage; they have to cough up as they displayed a lack of responsibility.

They never helped me with my expenses and I had to pay all my transport for check-ups,” she said.

“I have to teach them a lesson. I have heard that it is not the first time this has happened and they are doing nothing about it. I am not going to let the matter lie; I am going to seek legal advice,” she said.

Thulamela Municipality spokesperson Mr Nndwamato Tshiila first said he did not know anything about the incident but promised to investigate. As promised, Tshiila did come back to say that they were doing the best they could to assist the woman.

“We told her to bring proof of costs, so that we can reimburse her, and if she needs money to go for check-ups, she is at liberty to visit our offices, but with proof. Our doors are open and she should feel free to visit us at any given time,” said Tshiila.

The sight of the youth lingering on the streets and sitting idly in front of the shops will hopefully soon be less of a common sight in the Dzanani area. This comes after the Makhado Municipality had launched a project to construct the Dzanani Community Hall on Wednesday.

The project is estimated to cost around R12 million to complete. The project comprises three offices, two change rooms, an ablution block, a hall, a kitchen, parking, palisade fencing and an access road to the centre.

According to the project consultant, Mr Takalani Musandiwa of TM Africa Engineering Services, the entire construction will occupy just over 1 000 square metres. “The project duration is eight months, starting from today (20 February) to 20 October 2013,” said Musandiwa.

FGN Construction and Plant Hire has been hired as contractor.

Makhado Municipality’s mayor, Cllr David Mutavhatsindi, said that he understood very well that the project would also create short-term unemployment relief for the local residents.

He added that the community hall will be used as an indoor sports centre that will house different sporting codes, such as volleyball, basketball, table tennis and other recreational activities. “This will keep youngsters busy and work as a tool for fighting crime,” said Cllr Mutavhatsindi.

“The community hall will also assist in hosting community events,” said Ward 25 councillor John Mamafha. “Gone are the days when the community used to hire venues for community activities and each time when the municipality wanted to interact with the people,” he said.

ANCYL election at Samson Phophi branch gets disrupted The general branch meeting (BMG) of the Samson Phophi branch of the African National Congress Youth League (ANCYL) was disrupted on Saturday and had to be postponed, following clashes between rival groups. The meeting, during which a new branch committee was to be elected, was held at the Makhado Show Grounds on Saturday.

The meeting was called off amidst allegations that some participants didn’t hold up-to-date membership cards and were not legitimate members of the ANCYL. A representative from the ANC Vhembe regional office, Given Makhuvele, said in an interview with Limpopo Mirror that he had directed the BMG to be called off, following concerns about certain people who did not have legitimate privileges to vote. “It’s over to the branch to find another suitable date for elections,” said Makhuvele.

Apparently what had happened was that a group of ANCYL members arrived in a bus and convened in the hall. Two SA journalists arrested in Zimbabwe

Two South African journalists who entered Zimbabwe through the Beit Bridge Border Post were arrested last week and fined for working in the country without the necessary accreditation.

The two men visited the Umzingwane area, where they entered a local farm and took photographs at the gravesite of 16 commercial farmers who were massacred during political disturbances in that country.

Local police spokesperson Sergeant Nkosilathi Sibanda confirmed the arrest of David Andrew Joseph Bernard (37) and Guide Ncube (28), both from South Africa.

“The two were arrested at Umzingwane. Soon after arriving into the country through the Beit Bridge border post, they visited Adams Farm Cnr/o Burger & Rissik Street, last Saturday, where, Louis Trichardt on arrival, they went to the farm house and met Tel: 015 516 0284/5/6 Mr Emmanuel Gwebu, who stays at the farm.

The two journalists were each fined US $100 or alternatively 90 days in prison for violating provisions of the Access to Information and Protection of Privacy Act (practising journalism without accreditation).

The two were convicted by a local magistrate, Ms Lungile Ncube. The still camera and the video camera in the two’s possession were forfeited to the State.

Denga family shattered by sudden disappearance and death Tragedy has struck twice for the Denga family of Tshitavha Vhulaudzi in the Makhado area.

In January this year, a member of the family, Johannes Denga (88), went missing while going to collect his grant money at Makhado. He has not been seen since. His disappearance has affected the family and is a source of concern in the community also.

As if that was not enough, the family suffered yet another blow when Johannes’s wife, Alucia Denga (78), died after spending a week at a local hospital.

She was buried on Saturday at the local cemetery.

After the burial, angry community members went on the rampage, putting barricades on the road, burning tyres and threatening to search all the houses in the village, looking for the missing old man. They were only restrained from doing so by the leadership, who feared that the exercise might get out of hand. The community then held a meeting to look into ways of finding the missing man.

The family is blaming the death of the woman on the stress she was suffering after the disappearance of her husband.

“On that day, my father woke up very early in the morning, as always, and said he was going to Makhado to get his grant money. I asked him to wait for me as I had left a bag in the house, but when I got out, he was gone and was nowhere to be found. I checked and asked people at the bus stop, but everybody said they had not seen him,” said Stella Denga, the missing man’s daughter.

She said they reported him missing to police. She

“We just hope that he is still alive and might be somewhere in the village. We do not think he ever left this village as no one saw him boarding a taxi,” she said. She said his disappearance had affected the family adversely.

“My mother was better last month, but since the start of this month, she started asking me how far the investigations and the search for her husband had progressed. Her health started deteriorating.

She was never the same and it was clear that the disappearance of her husband was taking its toll on her. She was admitted to the local hospital where she succumbed to her illness after a week,” she said.

The missing man’s sister, Maano Rambau, said it was surprising that Denga had just disappeared in the village without a trace. “It is surprising that a man well known in the village like him could just disappear without a trace. We suspect my brother was the victim of a ritual murder and we are making an appeal to his murderers to please release his body. Even if they bring just his bones, they

should just dump them at the gate, so that we can give him a decent funeral and also show his grave to generations to come,” she said.

Edwin Mulefu, the chairperson of the local civic, said the disappearance of Denga was cause for concern in the village. “The community is worried and everyone believes that he did not leave the village; they are now pointing fingers at people. We are just making an appeal to the police to speed up the investigations and the search and bring the case to finality, for the sake of the family and peace in the village,” he said.

He said as community leaders they were going to place suggestion boxes at strategic places to help gather information about the disappearance.

“We have not heard anything from the police since the old man disappeared. Even the family is not receiving updates about the case and this is causing animosity between the community and the police,” he said.

Three in custody for kidnapping, robbery

Mabudafhasi hands over food parcels As part of her road show to sensitise people living in disaster-prone areas on how to deal with the weather conditions in their areas, Deputy Minister of Environmental Affairs Rejoice Mabudafhasi visited the Thohoyandou area on Tuesday.

Before addressing community members who were waiting at the local town hall, the Deputy Minister visited some families in the Mphego area who were affected by the recent floods.

She visited three families in the area to hand over some food parcels.

One of the beneficiaries is Azwidowi Ramudzuli (37), who lives in a one-roomed mud shack with her husband and three children. She was overcome with emotion when the Deputy Minister gave her a 5kg bag of meal mealie, groceries, a blanket and soap. “Never did I think someone would enter my home to give such,” she said.

The family’s house had its roof destroyed during the recent floods, rendering the family homeless.

Mabudafhasi visited two other families before going to the Thohoyandou town hall to speak to members of the community.

Mabudafhasi said they could not prevent hazardous weather from happening, but people must know how to deal with disasters when these happen.

She said the government was aware of the floods that had devastated parts of the country and the Vhembe region, costing millions of rands.

She gave some useful tips on how to deal with bad weather conditions. She told the people to do the following: * If possible, stay indoors and off the roads. * Be on the lookout for weather warnings on TV and radio. * Avoid crossing rivers or

swollen streams. * If your car gets stuck in a flood, get out and climb to higher ground. * Move valuables to a safe place in buildings. * Switch off electricity at the supply point. * Relocate your animals to a safe place. * Abandon your home immediately before access is cut off. * Never drive into water covering a river.

Mabudafhasi ended her speech by quoting President Jacob Zuma in his state-ofthe-nation address. “As we move into the 20th anniversary of freedom, there should emerge a common thread of patriotism that binds us. We should put South Africa first.

All of us have a patriotic duty and responsibility to build and promote our country. Rhetoric and grandstanding are a luxury the country cannot afford,” she said.

The Levubu police have arrested three male suspects in connection with a case of kidnapping and robbery, which happened at Elim a fortnight ago (9/2).

According to the spokesperson for the police at Levubu, W/O Solly Mukhola, the police were doing a routine patrol around the Mashau area when they spotted a silver-grey sedan and stopped it for searching. The driver is said

to have complied. But as soon as the police officers approached the vehicle, the three men inside the sedan started arguing with the police.

They demanded to know the reason why they had ordered them to stop. “They swore at the police,” Mukhola said.

Mukhola states that the fourth occupant, a 19-year-old woman, immediately informed the police that the three men had allegedly

kidnapped her at Elim. She mantained that she was standing at the road when the suspects’ car stopped near her.

She added that the men pulled her inside the car and drove off with her. They then ordered her to hand her phone over, so that she could not try to call anyone to come to rescue her.

The suspects, who are between the ages of 30 and 40, will appear in court soon, said Mukhola.

Man murders wife, commits suicide An 80-year-old resident from Chigani village outside Beit Bridge allegedly stabbed his 72-year-old wife to death with a sharp object during a domestic dispute. He then committed suicide by hanging himself in his crop field, police have said.

The woman was allegedly struck twice with a sharp object on the left jaw, cutting through the back of her head.

The police said that Mr Sweet Mugande was drinking beer with his wife, Siyalinda Mugande, at a local homestead at about 17:00 on Sunday when the dispute occurred.

Insp Billie Dube confirmed the incident, saying Mrs Mugande’s body was found lying in a footpath in the early hours of Monday morning.

Prisoners celebrate Mother Tongue Day International Mother Tongue Day was celebrated at the Makhado Correctional Centre last week and the event was attended by representatives of the Pan South African Language Board (PanSALB), Department of Sport, Arts and Culture, prison officials and inmates.

On a cloudy Thursday morning (21 February), all stakeholders convened at the facility’s dining hall to interact and discuss the value and importance of being able to read and write in one’s mother tongue.

Let’s continue to respect ourselves, our languages and books.”

The speaker of the day, who happened to be an ex-convict, published author and journalist Tshifhiwa Given Mukwevho,

spoke about the advantages and disadvantages of addressing an audience which comprises people from different languages. “You must be very cautious when you stand in front of the people to address them in your mother tongue,” Mukwevho said. “It is of no use to continue the speech in your mother tongue when some among the audience cannot make sense of what you are saying.”

Mukwevho then spoke from personal experience of life after prison and the difficulties of finding a job after doing time in jail. “You might have obtained a degree while in prison, friends and brothers, but you must exercise patience while trying to find a job upon your release,” he advised. “Don’t allow pride to overtake you. I started from selling zwimunemune (snacks) in town and some people gloated at me, but I didn’t consider their ridicule. All that I was doing was to try to beautify my life.”

The ex-prisoner then donated several copies of his short-story book, A Traumatic Revenge, to inmates as a form of motivation.

Limpopo Provincial Language Committee chairperson Mr Chris Baloyi commended Mukwevho and encouraged all inmates to look up to him for motivation and read books.

“One man once said that it’s not a mistake to make a mistake, but it’s a great mistake to keep Thohoyandou Management Area´s head of security, Mr Mashudu repeating the same mistakes,” said Baloyi.

Budeli residents also need drinking water It is almost five years after the erstwhile Public Protector, Lawrence Mushwana, had made some recommendations to the Department of Water Affairs concerning the problems of people who were affected by the building of the Nandoni Dam. Residents now claim that none of the recommendations have been carried out.

Last Monday, angry residents of Ha-Budeli outside Thohoyandou, just a stone’s throw away from the multi-billion-rand Nandoni dam, marched to the dam to Community leader Robert Tshamaano reads out a memorandum to officials of the Department hand over a memorandum listing their problems. They say that of Water Affairs during the march. they regret the day the dam was built in their area.

The dam, many years after its completion, has not yielded any water to the nearby communities, even though some far-flung areas are now using the water from it.

More than 300 households in the village now depend on water from the nearby river, which they share with animals.

The residents, some of whom were relocated during the con-

struction of the dam, are also aggrieved that the money they were promised for their land has not been paid. Some even complained that the houses which were built for them have cracked and are no longer safe to live in.

Some are even afraid that they will be swept away by the dam because they are living right next to the dam, even though they were promised relocation a long time ago. This has made the community very angry, and a week ago they embarked on a peaceful march to the purification plant at the dam, where they handed over a memorandum to officials from the ministry of water affairs.

“We are very angry that, many years after the dawn of democracy; we who are living next to the dam are still without water.

We only see water here and pipes passing through our village, but we are still to taste a drop from this dam. This is very bad for us,” said Robert Tshamaano, the local civic chairperson.

He handed over the memorandum to Philani Madondo from

the Department of Water Affairs.

Tshamaano said they had visited the municipality’s offices and also those of the Department of Water Affairs, but they had not received any help.

“We are tired of living like foreigners. We have been pleading with the government for a long time and now it is time to take the government head on. We would like to see the department implementing the recommendations. We will not rest and have given the department 14 days to respond to our challenges, failing which we will take the matter further,” he said. When receiving the memorandum, an official from the Department of Water Affairs, Mr Philani Madondo, said they would consider what was in the memorandum and the letter of complaints from the community. “We know that water is a pressing issue and we commit ourselves to forming an interim forum to look at how to attend to these pressing issues that have persisted for a long time,” he said.

“Follow procedures or face being arrested” The Musina joint crime unit conducted Operation Focus last weekend, to monitor and control crime in the policing area.

During the operation, two suspects were arrested for contravening the liquor act after they were found selling liquor without a license at Mushongoville. According to the spokesperson for the Musina police, Lt Peter Mudau, the police confiscated three refrigerators and 27 cases of assorted brands of beer.

“Anybody who is interested in starting a liquor business or any other business must follow the right procedure, or else we will come to arrest you for operating an illegal business,” said Mudau.

In a separate incident, at least 13 security officers were found without security industry regulation authority cards. As a result, the rightful owner of the security company to which all these security officers are attached was eventually arrested. The owner of Tascon Security, Mr Rendelani Nehulula (34), paid a R400 fine for each of the 13 security Members of the SAPS stand among the goods that were confiscated during Operation Focus at officers to be released from police custody.

Councillor dies The sudden passing away of Cllr Jenitta Banda (42) has left the entire community of Musina in a state of shock. Banda was a very popular and well-respected member of the council.

The bad news has been met with sadness by fellow councillors, municipal staff members and ordinary people across the boundaries of the council. As an emerging businesswoman, Cllr Banda was known to work tirelessly to uplift the lives of poverty-stricken families living in the area. She could be found at all hours assisting residents with one matter or another.

Banda, who had been ill for some time, was buried according to strict Muslim custom during an exclusive service that was held at her house on Wednesday last week. The funeral service was followed on Saturday by a memorial service.

Being a proportional representative (PR) councillor for the African Christian Democratic Party, Banda was well respected for being outspoken and she did not fear standing up and speaking on behalf of the people she represented. Mayor Carol Phiri said she was saddened by the news of councillor Banda’s death. She said: “It’s a sad loss to the council and a sad loss to the family. All our sympathy goes to her family and friends. Cllr Banda had immeasurable civic pride and was a huge asset to this municipality. She was a hard worker and very fair in her job. We always had great pleasure working with her.”

Phiri said Banda was a true champion and servant of the local community that many would love to emulate. “She sought no glory. In saluting her, we commit ourselves to picking up the baton and continuing the legacy she has left behind. Her contributions in building a better community for Musina will always be remembered. What moves through us now is silence and sadness. We may not understand why she left this earth so soon, or why she left before we were ready to say goodbye, but little by little, we begin to remember not just that she died, but that she lived. Her life gave us memories too beautiful to forget.”

Potential cattle farmers must apply to be part of Nguni lending project The Limpopo Department of Agriculture (LDA), in partnership with the Industrial Development Cooperation (IDC) and the University of Limpopo (UL), is once again inviting potential cattle farmers to apply to take part in the Nguni project.

This unique programme started in 2006 and has already assisted dozens of farmers in a total of 44 projects. Roughly 1 500 head of Nguni cattle have been made available to farmers on a loan basis. The head count has already grown to about 8 500 and the farmers have made profits in excess of R2 million.

According to the spokesperson for the department, Mr Kenny Mathivha, the aim of the trust is to

upgrade cattle farming in the rural areas of Limpopo through the reintroduction of the indigenous Nguni cattle bloodline. The goal is to create a community of emerging beef-production farmers. He said eligible farmers who will be lent cattle for a period of five years should, at the end of the period, return the same or an equivalent amount of money.

“The applicants should be those who are interested in farming, especially Nguni cattle breeding.

They must either own a farm suitable and equipped for cattle farming or have a long-term lease on state-owned farms.

The applicants must also be able to display entrepreneurial abilities and cattle management

skills,” he added.

According to Mathivha, communal farming is not eligible, but the department is negotiating with traditional leaders that they offer potential farmers long leases on their land, especially in a cooperative format, so that ‘our’ people can be empowered.

Eligible applicants should have a valid South African ID and provide proof of farm ownership or lease. They must provide the department with a short description of the farm and utilisation history and a brief CV. Applications should be directed to the Chairperson: Limpopo IDC-Nguni Cattle Development Trust, University of Limpopo (Turfloop Campus).

Community shattered by girl’s suicide The atmosphere was filled with a heavy cloud of grief as hundreds of emotional mourners paid their last respects to the Grade 9 learner of Manaledzi High, Thendo Nedzamba (16), who committed suicide last Wednesday night. She was buried on Saturday at the Tshiozwi cemetery.

The mourners wept openly during the funeral, while many learners fainted. Last year, three learners from the same school committed suicide.

When addressing the mourners, the principal of Manaledzi High, Mr George Mathivha, described the young girl as a brave young soldier. “We only have

to accept it, because we cannot change the situation. The death of a young girl is synonymous with a flowering tree that loses flowers that were expected to turn into fruit,” Mathivha said.

He said the school was forced to come on board to make sure that the young girl was buried with dignity and respect. “The death has touched our hearts,” he said. Mr Mathivha said the death had left many scholars traumatised and it would take a long time for the community to recover from the shock.

The chairperson of the SANCO branch in Tshiozwi, Mr Shaft Matumba, appealed to the churches from different areas to

pray to find a solution for the on-going suicides in the area. ”If young people have a problem, they should approach pastors, teachers and any person who can help them,” he said.

A family representative, Mr Sonnyboy Masuka, said they were still expecting a lot from the brilliant girl, but they had accepted what had happened “because we cannot change the situation”. Masuka thanked the community for the support displayed during the incident. “Your presence made our hearts strong.

We have been battling to come to terms with this incident, but your overwhelming support has made us more confident.”

Tricky hurdle ahead of Super Eagles

Convincing victory for Vhembe FET

It remains to be seen whether Tshilamusi Super Eagles will be able to grab a point in their SAB League match against Joe’s Express when they meet at the Mabvete grounds on Sunday.

Joe’s Express are currently leading the pack, while Super Eagles are perched somewhere down the log.

The other match that is expected to attract a huge number of spectators will be between Mutele Mountain Rangers and Mabvete Peace Makers. It will be staged at the Mutele grounds. Muswodi Happy Fighters will host Musina Family United at the Muswodi grounds.

Not only did Vhembe FET College FC collect three significant league points in their SAB League match against Dididi Flying Swallows at the Makwarela Stadium on Saturday, but they also registered a historic final score of 5-0.

The game was one-way traffic flow from the onset to the bitter end, with Flying Swallows at the receiving end.

Davhula completed his hat trick in the 54th minute. He hooked in the ball after a scramble within the box. Luambo Nethononda and a substitute, Pfunzo Razwimisani, scored the fourth and the fifth goal in the 59th and 64th minute respectively. Vhembe displayed their dribbling skills for the remaining part of the game.

Univen students hold Rockers FC to goalless draw

Univen FC managed to collect four league points over the past weekend. They played to a goalless draw with Rockers FC at the Makwarela Stadium on Saturday before beating Ramukhuba United Brothers 2-1 at the Ramukhuba grounds the following day.

Their game against Rockers on Saturday was a thriller, despite the fact that no goal was seen.

Rospa United ready to crush Modimolle After beating Nobela All Stars 2-0 in their SAFA Second Division League match at the Lesley Manyathela Stadium in Musina last Saturday, Rospa United are now leaving no stone unturned in their preparations for their match this weekend.

They will host Modimolle Aces at the Malamulele Stadium tomorrow afternoon.

The past weekend’s defeat has pushed Nobela deeper into the relegation quagmire, while Rospa have moved a number of steps up the ladder, following their away victory. It was the first victory for Rospa United under the guidance

of their newly appointed coach, Mr Sydney Moshikaro. Moshikaro took over from Mr Patrick Mabasa three weeks ago.

Real Rovers make amends against Bombers After losing 0-1 to Makovha All Stars at the same venue the previous day, Mphego Real Rovers rectified their mistakes and beat Lufule Flying Bombers 3-0 in their SAB League match at the Mphego grounds on Sunday.

Real Rovers meant business from the onset in their match against Flying Bombers. It took them only four minutes to open their account. Their slender striker, Pfuluwani Mungani, blasted in a rocket, following a scramble within the box.

The struggle continued, with Rovers firing from all cylinders. They threatened to score again five minutes thereafter. Trevor Tshisikule, who scored a brace in the match, missed a fortune when he shot aimlessly from close range. The visitors from Lufule village conceded another goal when the game was 16 minutes old. Trevor Tshisikule unleashed a volley from outside box. The keeper of Bombers, Nduvho Tshikalange, watched helplessly as the ball hit the crossbar and bounced across the goal line.

Flying Bombers effected three changes to their starting lineup. They introduced Tshiwela Ramabulana, Thilivhali Muridili and Mpho Bongwe at the expense of Mutula Mahase, Adivhaho Magadze and Nation Mahalihali. The replacements proved to be a clever move on the part of the Bombers’ technical staff as they managed to contain the Rovers’ striking force.

The score was 2-0 when the proceedings for the first half came to an end.

Flying Bombers were superior when it came to

ball possession throughout the second half, but it was difficult for them to find their way through the defence of Rovers. The home side scored the third via Trevor Tshisikule in the 78th minute to seal the game.

Benny’s strengthen position The current log leaders in the Safa Vhembe SAB Stream E, Benny's Care Academy, beat Madombidzha Arsenal 1-0 in a league match played at the Tshiozwi grounds on Sunday.

It was a do-or-die battle for the two teams. Arsenal's side was strong at the far back and boasted a decent striking force, but they lacked cohesion in the middle of the park.

The balls that threatened the defence of Arsenal were ballooned from behind. Arsenal enjoyed more

ball possession, but their promising moves were neutralised by the rocksolid defence of Benny's.

No goal was seen during the first half. This was mainly because Benny's were cooling the ball down in the middle of the park, thus giving their opponents no chance to do as they pleased. The only goal for Benny's was scored in the 78th minute.

Rendani Galedzane tried his luck from a corner kick and the keeper of Arsenal, Rendani Maduwa, misjudged the flight of the ball and then suffered the pain of watching it go beyond his reach. The visitors introduced Shoni Leaka for Mbengeni Rambuwani, but he did not change the complexion of the match.

Phungo All Stars registered their first victory when they beat Lephalale Young Killers in the Safa Limpopo Second Division match played at the Eltivillas grounds on Saturday.

Stars were the superior side from the onset as far as possession of the ball was concerned. This resulted in their putting more pressure on the defence of Killers for the better part of the match.

Katlego Maralala missed a golden opportunity in the eighth minute when he received a well-timed pass from Khomotso Raphahlela. Realising that their midfield was weary, the technical department of the Lephalale lads introduced Jan Matlou for Onnice Morudu.

The half-time score was still 0-0.

In the second half, the boys from Lephalale applied more pressure on

their opponents. Selepe Mabelane of Killers could not make the grade as the opponents used him as their freeway.

The technical staff spotted this and replaced him with Marvel Mauda.

Karel Ratombo of Stars dribbled past three defenders in a row before timing a perfect pass to the unmarked Mashudu Tshitavha to beat the keeper easily. After this goal, Killers started to change their strategy, but the home team still enjoyed more ball possession.

Two difficult hurdles ahead of Leopards After losing three league matches in a row, Black Leopards are now facing the possibility of dropping more significant points in their two upcoming league matches.
