Collins Chabane Municipality’s “food cocktail” embarrassment

By Tshifhiwa Mukwevho The long knives are out for one or more of Collins Chabane Municipality’s communication officers,

following a very distasteful post on social media the past weekend.

In the post that appeared on the municipality’s Facebook page, the announcement was made that the mayor was going to distribute food parcels at Kurhuleni village on Sunday.

The post was accompanied by a photo of a cooler box filled with alcohol.

The municipality issued a statement earlier this week in which they condemned the “false impression and condescending disposition” of the employee who had posted the offending photo.

The picture caused a lot of reaction on social media and was removed not long after being posted. The initial excuse (that was also removed) was that the municipality’s Facebook page had been “hacked”.

Robbers pounce on spaza shops

By Charity Mulaudzi The lockdown period seems to be no deterrent for some criminals, with burglaries and robberies continuing in areas such as Madombidzha. On Sunday night, two Ethiopian citizens were attacked and robbed inside their spaza shop.

According to Mr Daniele Etoso, the incident happened at about 02:00 when a group of men wearing balaclavas arrived at the shop and broke the security doors. Their small spaza shop is situated in Madombidzha Zone 2 and serves as a home for Daniele and

his younger brother, Ephraim.

The robbers were armed with knives, hammers and other sharp objects.

They entered the shop and demanded money. According to Daniele, one of the robbers took a swipe at him with a knife, but fortunately it missed his chest, only ripping open his shirt.

“They then climbed over the counter and made their way to the till. My young brother, who was in the shp with me, was crying for help,” he said.

One of the robbers attacked Daniele once more and sliced open his hand.

He was also hit on the head with a heavy object, which caused a lot of

bleeding. While this was happening, another robber was punching his brother.

The two Ethiopian men put up a brave fight, but the robbers overpowered them and stole the bit of cash they had. The robbers also took all the airtime vouchers from the shop before fleeing.

The police spokesperson, Brig Motlafela Mojapelo, said that a case of robbery at a business had been opened and one suspect had been arrested. He appealed to members of the community who may have information about the crime to contact them.

On Sunday, the municipality’s communications manager, Mr Isaac Nukeri, issued a statement saying that the municipality was aware that “[unscrupulous people were] prowling around as part of the mayhem that accompanies the struggle against the onslaught of Corona virus (sic)” in the country.

“To (the) utter disgust and dismay of the Municipality … one of its employees projected a cooler box riddled with a concoction of alcoholic beverages, therefore furnishing a wrong impression that such are food parcels meant for delivery to the community by the Honourable Mayor,” Nukeri stated.

He added that the employee’s behaviour lacked “the high standard

of professional ethics expected to be promoted by all employees of the Municipality”. He apologised on behalf of the municipality and promised that “decisive action is being taken by the Municipality against the affected employee”.

Several media enquiries asking for more clarity on who exactly was responsible for the embarrassing incident were sent to the spokespersons the past week. The two spokespersons are Isaac Nukeri and MJ wa Azania. Several calls were made, but these were not answered.

On social media, the responses were less sympathetic and many who commented on the offending post asked for heads to roll, pointing fairly directly at the communication officers.

Sayi Khalanga Baloyi said: “Liar, liars have no place in our democratic society. One should manner (sic) and act responsible for publishing wrong content and comments...”

Risimati Ngobeni reckoned that the problems arise because communication officers are political appointments, but “lacks political education and political language” and act in a childish manner.

Ndhuma Makamu agreed, saying “This is really sad. The level of professionalism and formality in the municipality’s communication unit is shockingly very low. There is a clear evidence of lack of capacity.

Lockdown rules enforced at Musina Musina News Several community members and business owners were arrested for failing to comply with the lockdown regulations during the enforcement campaign that was conducted in Musina last Wednesday.

The campaign was led by Premier Stanley Mathabatha, members of his executive and Musina Mayor Mihloti Muhlope. Also forming part of the campaign were the South African Police Services, the South African National Defence Force, traffic officers, emergency medical services, and the South African Revenue Service.

The perpetrators’ offences ranged from operating shops without valid permits and failure to produce travel permits to roaming aimlessly up and down the streets and being in the country illegally. The shops that were implicated were immediately ordered to close before the owners were taken into custody.

Before the campaign, the Covid-19 Provincial Command Council, led by the premier, had a meeting to discuss, update and share progress on the provincial government’s efforts in the fight against the global pandemic. The meeting was held at Musina Municipality’s council chambers.

The premier urged all community members to join hands in the war against the coronavirus.

“Government is making good progress to fight this pandemic, and we urge everyone to play a meaningful role. The pandemic has impacted negatively on our livelihood, but we will defeat it and recover soon. All that is needed is our collective efforts to defeat this virus.”

Besides law enforcement, the premier and his entourage went to people’s houses to conduct a coronavirus-awareness campaign. He also visited the Beit Bridge border post and conducted roadblocks. Although he was happy that some community members were complying with the lockdown regulations, he was also worried about others who did not take the lockdown seriously.

He told members of the various household he visited to comply with the lockdown regulations without compromise because the regulations were there to save lives, not to punish people.

“I was worried to see some children playing in the streets during these trying times. Law-enforcement agencies will track down parents and arrest them for allowing their children to roam the streets. You should only go out when there is a need to do so. This includes buying essentials like food, seeking medical attention, and doing your banking. These regulations are not meant to punish anyone, but they are to protect us and to save our lives. Should you see anyone failing to comply with the lockdown regulations, do not hesitate to report to your community leaders or law-enforcement agencies.”

Cllr Muhlope said the campaign had had a great impact on the community of Musina. “We are pleased that a few people who did not take the lockdown seriously have now practically learned that you can be arrested for ignoring the lockdown regulations. However, the police and law-enforcement agencies will not be coming to your house every day; it is upon us to take these measures seriously in order to save our lives and those of our loved ones.”

Another hawker, Vho-Tshililo Netshidzivhe, the mother of four children, said that she had accepted the loss that came with the initial closure of informal businesses, but then she was faced with a situation where she was hardly making a profit. “I have come to realise that while I am not making much profit, I am better off than staying at home with no source of income at all,” she said.

Vho-Takalani Mukwevho is the strong and resilient farmer who delivers tomatoes to the fruit-and-vegetable stall owners. “I am faced with a bigger challenge at this stage,” she said. “While I had managed to have good and juicy tomatoes this time around on our farm, we are not making any instant or regular profit in that we are giving most of our produce on credit. We fully understand that hawkers are faced with hard times where they cannot afford to pay cash for stock.”

Chaos as food parcels get distributed in Tshikota

The Siya Kolisi Foundation, in conjunction with Imbumbi, the Nelson Mandela Foundation and the Radzambo Cultural Foundation, has donated groceries that will last them for a month to more than 500 needy villagers around Vhembe.

The official handing over was held at Joe Matsila Guest House on Monday.

The poor families are from Matsila, Nkuzana, Majosi, Mashau, Njakanjaka, Mabidi, Ha-Vhangani Sinthumule, Thengwe, Khubvi, Hlanganani RDP houses, Tshitavha Sambandou and Nzhelele Ha-Mavhunga.

The Springbok captain, Siya Kolisi, said giving back to the people who supported him was important. He said they were working with the chiefs, different structures and municipalities who were affected by the national lockdown. He urged people to come on board and donate if they could.

“This is a difficult time for many people, and we want to make sure that as many families as possible are equipped.”

Chief Livhuwani Matsila of Radzambo Cultural Foundation said that during the lockdown most of the people were not working.

In a separate event, the community of Matsila village was joyful when residents received water after spending five years without a drop of water. The borehole that was equipped for the community many years ago was vandalized by thieves.

Chief Livhuwani Matsila handed over the borehole to the thirsty community on Monday. The frustrated community of Matsila approached Chief Matsila for assistance, claiming that the government could not give them services.

The event was witnessed by a few people, who were complying with the COVID-19 rules and regulations.

Matsila said that he had assisted the community with the pump system and installation. He said that after the community had approached him about the shortage of water, he agreed. “I am

always available to the community and am urging businesspeople to take the giant step of ploughing back into the community to bring development and real change in our area,” he said.

Matsila urged the community to take care of the borehole. He is concerned about people who vandalize or tamper with the borehole to generate income.

“I am appealing to everybody in the community to safeguard the borehole, because some people are targeting the borehole. I am going all out, and I will use the few resources I have to take my community out of poverty,” he said.

A community member, Mr Talulanyani Mushavhela, said that the community was relieved after five years of struggling without water. “This is to ensure that the community has access to clean water, a key ingredient in the fight against the spread of the coronavirus.

For years now members of the community were forced to pay R5 per 20-litre container to people with boreholes.

Chaos erupted at Tshikota township on Friday during a planned food-parcel distribution project.

More than 500 residents queued at the local hall, but delivery never happened.

The police and soldiers had to be called in to disperse the angry crowd. Residents said they had been unable to reach the coordinators of the food parcels as they could not be contacted. Some of them alleged that the coordinators put ANC members, friends and relatives on the list and if one were not an ANC member, one would not get assistance.

Some needy residents said they needed food relief for those who cannot meet their families’ most basic needs during the COVID-19 lockdown period. One of the residents, Ms Joyce Machoke, was unable to get assistance. “Most of the Tshikota people are poor as most of us are unemployed and don’t have food during this time. We are appealing to the government to assist us. We have submitted our names to community structure leaders, so that we can get food parcels. We opted to register our names with the community leaders, because we don’t have any idea on how to apply for food-parcel relief,” added Machoke.

The donor, Mr Hanyani Mthombeni, said that he was disappointed when people flocked in large numbers to the hall, queuing for food. The names of some of the people queuing were not on the list submitted to them by community leaders. He said that they then called the police to enforce the law, realising that people were not practicing social distancing and pushing each other to get inside the hall.

Mthombeni said that because of the lockdown, many families saw their income reduced, while others did not earn an income.

Some of the ANC members at the Tshikota branch who want to remain anonymous said that the food parcels formed part of a campaign for the forthcoming ANC Vhembe Regional conference. They alleged that the food parcels had been donated to buy votes for Adv Makonde Mathivha, who is battling against Vhembe District Municipality Mayor Dowelani Nenguda for the position of chairperson of the region.

The two coordinators who were arrested are Mr Hanyani Mthombeni (29) and Mr Gerson Siphuma (45). The two were charged with attending an illegal gathering and were released on bail of R1 000 each. The other four suspects include the DA councillor, Ms Bessie Jones, ANC Tshikota branch chairperson Mr Bethuel Rasesu (38), Phophi Mageza (50) and Itani Tshidavhu (45). They were charged with failure to confine themselves in their place of residence. They were released on a warning and will appear in the Louis Trichardt Magistrate’s Court again on 26 August.

start very early. Many of the women get up at about 03:30 to start preparing the first meal, called suhoor.

The morning prayer session starts at about 05:15.

For the rest of the day, no food or drink is consumed.

The fasting continues until the sun sets, which is around 17:45, when a meal called iftar is served. The exact time when fasting ends is governed by the mosque administrators. The last night prayer starts at about 19:00, but all prayers normally ends at 20:00.

Food preparation may be more of a challenge this year, because of the lockdown regulations. Only Halaal meat may be used, but no local suppliers exist in town. The nearest Halaal butchery is in Nirvana, in Polokwane. Halaal chicken is more readily available and most Muslim families have stocked up on other necessities before Ramadaan started.

Idris mentions that many of the Indian families are currently under severe financial stress because of the lockdown. Trade in many sectors such as

The well-known actor, comedian and Tshivenda film producer, Ntambudzeni Rasalanavho of Tshovhingana fame, better known as “Mr Bundu”, is still in custody.

Rasendedza was arrested in February, facing a charge of assault. He was accused of breaking his girlfriend’s foot. Last September he was arrested for alleged burning his girlfriend body, using hot plastic.

The two cases have now been combined and he appeared in court at Thohoyandou on 6 April when both cases were postponed to 30 April.

Rasendedza reportedly failed to attend the burial of his mother a fortnight ago, because he was still in custody.

The lockdown has caused misery for us, say Zimbabwean refugees

By Tshifhiwa Mukwevho “Beauty is something that few understand and fewer possess – it is not just a matter of a fancy appearance, but it starts from within.”

Tshitereke Tshilidzi entered the world of modelling in 2018 and she has not looked back since that time. She is attached to Sage Squad Modelling Agency.

“I had seen myself as the typical girl, but it was when I had joined the Sage Squad Modelling Agency that I realised that I had a following,” she said. “With the popularity and accessibility of the social media platforms, one is able to create a fan base that has not been seen anywhere before, and that’s what exactly happened to me.”

She stated that during the early stages she had encountered scenarios where she had to deal with “hating and badmouthing” from people who were inclined to discourage her. “I nearly quit modelling, but the agency motivated me,” she said. “They told me to focus on my career and not on what haters were saying.”

“Where to? What is next? The world seems (to be) coming to an end. Lockdown, though a good idea, has made our lives so difficult,” says Mqabungo and Tiyiwe Sibanda.

The lockdown period has taken them down memory lane to Nkai, a town near Bulawayo, a place they used to call home. After their parents passed away, they decided to come to South Africa.

Both use crutches to help them walk from one point to the other.

The two Sibandas are among several hundreds of Zimbabweans staying in Tshikota who have been severely affected by the lockdown. Most of them live off casual jobs offered by farmers around Louis Trichardt, others make a living out of collecting recyclable material.

Lockdown regulations do not allow unnecessary movement of any persons.

Following the announcement of the lockdown, the Department of Home Affairs outlined temporary measures to address immigration matters during the lockdown. Among the temporary mea-

sures is, the one that reads “except for cases relating to expatriation initiated by another state, all foreign nationals who are currently in South Africa may not depart”.

On the other hand, the Department of Social Development is handing out food parcels to vulnerable people who are South African citizens, permanent residents, or refugees.

This has left the foreigners in a dire situation.

“I came to South Africa in 2008 to look for employment. Unfortunately, I could not find any, so I decided to pick up empty beer and cool-drink cans for resale. I have to crutch all the way from Tshikota to town to pick up these empty cans,” said Tiyiwe (45), now a mother of three.

She gets little money from these empty cans. On average, she pockets about R300 per month which she uses for paying rent and buying food. She stays in a shack. Her rent is R350 per month.

“It is fortunate that my landlord understands our situation. We make payment plans,” said Tiyiwe.

Because her brother, Mqabugo, is

also disabled and no one could look after him, Tiyiwe advised her brother to join her this year. Mqabugo also uses crutches and survives by begging. He usually visits the Eltivillas area, begging for food and clothes.

“Since the lockdown, I have no idea of where to get food the next day. I can no longer move around to my usual places to beg for food,” said Mqabugo (40).

Another Zimbabwean, Svodai Moyo, a mother of three who usually lives off casual jobs on farms around Louis Trichardt, also finds it difficult during the lockdown. Moyo said the lockdown had hit her hard. She prepares very little food just to keep herself and the children alive. At times she forgoes other meals. The children are aged 11, 6 and 3.

Meanwhile, Vumbanani for Peacebuilding, an NGO, has been receiving requests for help during the lockdown period from these Zimbabweans living in Tshikota. The NGO is appealing to the government, well-wishers, business community, farmers, and community members for support of the affected group.

Based on her attained modelling expertise, she was appointed the Sage Squad Modelling Agency’s ambassador. “It was like heavy responsibility since I had not done that before, but soon I was enjoying representing the agency in the social spheres of life,” she said. “In December 2018, I entered Miss Vhavenda, and, in the end, I was named Miss Personality of the pageant. I was excited; I felt enthralled by the achievement!”

She is now running for the most coveted Public Choice Award in the Miss Angelic 2020.

“I can see the Public Choice Award in my hands,” she said. “I am so optimistic, and the votes are favouring me – I am in the lead.”

She said that in her modelling career she had learned to focus on the positive side of life. “I have literally learnt that you don’t have to live for people but mainly believe and trust in your abilities and capabilities,” she said. “Modelling involves making a representation of something – it is either your beauty, your personality, your confidence or the quality that you have out there as a social being.”

Don’t you dare steal the food parcels, warns mayor during launch of Vhembe Food Bank

By Silas Nduvheni The executive mayor of the Vhembe District Municipality, Cllr Dowelani Nenguda, said they would fight hard against people found to be stealing food parcels meant for poor and vulnerable community members.

“We shall protect our poor and vulnerable community members from unscrupulous people stealing food parcels meant for easing the plight of our people during this difficult time of lockdown. We have heard of the many allegations that some people were stealing food parcels meant for the poor and vulnerable,” said Nenguda. They will work with the Department of Social Development and SASSA in the distribution of food parcels as soon as they

are registered at the centre.

Nenguda, who was joined by local mayors, was speaking on Friday at the Malamulele Gymnasium during the launch of the Vhembe Food Bank, the place that was erected to help coordinate the distribution of food parcels from one centralized place.

According to Nenguda, the food bank will be situated in the Vhembe District Municipality’s disaster centre in Muledane near Thohoyandou. He said the reason for launching the food bank was to be able to manage the food parcels meant to benefit poor and needy people in one centralized place.

“It will be well structured, handled in a dignified way and some health inspectors will have to check whether they are good, before their expiry date.

We urge people to continue donating

food parcels, but they must come to the disaster centre and not just any place,” he added.

He said that they would prevent some people from donating fake items and expired foods, which would be hazardous to people’s health.

“We must excuse the councillors from distribution of food parcels, as a way of protecting their reputation, because there is too much controversy.

Councillors found guilty of doing things the wrong way, especially in terms of the distribution of food parcels, will be reported to the police,” Nenguda added.

Host mayor Moses Maluleke of Collins Chabane Local Municipality in Malamulele said they fully supported the initiative of launching a centralised food bank as many allegations of corruption had been reported.

“This is a very tough time for everyone, even for us as DJs and musicians, since we are not getting booked, but for the lockdown to end quickly, we need to stay at home. We (entertainers) want you guys to be alive and corona-free after this pandemic has passed, so that we can continue to entertain you.”

The 24-year-old DJ from Nzhelele Ha-Khakhu said she started feeling the seriousness of Covid-19 when six of her bookings were cancelled back in March.

“Things look as if they will still get tougher, but there is nothing we can do besides staying at home until this nightmare is over,” she said.

“As a musician, you can use this time to practise and improve your skills and use online platforms to market your products. If we work together with the government, we can beat this pandemic and continue with our lives.”

Lutroo Da-Music is back with new songs Ndenwa ya Munna is now available online

Hulisani Masakona, stage-named Lutroo Da-Music, is a hip-hop and RnB artist, a songwriter, singer, and record producer whose talent has seen him perform on national platforms.

He remembers that he had been among a few upcoming artists who were selected to perform at Colbert Mukwevho’s 50th birthday celebration in 2015.

“That was a great honour to me to be given a platform to pay my respect to the greatest musician ever alive,” he said. “I remember that that day I gave the performance my all – I exuded an on-stage energy that I had not shown before, because I knew that when it came to music, Dr Mukwevho would never compromise.”

He stated that his musical journey had started in the church where he had been involved in the choir and gone on to showcase his talent in local talent shows. “Having learned how to make my own instrumentals and re-

cord my own music, I started making my own records in 2009,” he said.

He started the year with a beautiful song called Tshifasekano, which made fans fall in love with him once more after a three-year-long break from the studio. A hit song called Khavha de (ft Khathu) followed, and it has since left fans longing for more. He just recently released two hit songs, Control (ft Mizo Phyll) and Insomniac.

With his smooth, soothing voice, Lutroo released his breakthrough single called Invisible in 2016, on which he featured Una Rams and Mizo Phyll.

It became one of the most popular songs in Vhembe then. “Within the same period, I became part of the top 10 Tshwane music conference winners who were rewarded with a three-year record deal with Uhuru Music among 300 competitors,” he said.

For obvious reasons, his fans believe without a doubt that he has a brighter future yet ahead of him. In some of the reviews on his Facebook page (NkhuliseniMasakona) people state, "He is the music, born to do this music

Musiiwa Makumbi had recently introduced Ndenwa Ya Munna, but now he just made a return with its online streaming to ease the mental strain that comes with possible boredom because of the lockdown. “Now it is that time that people need more entertainment than before, and in order for them to get it, we as film creators have come up with the idea of catering it to them at no cost at this stage where all are blanketed by the spread of the coronavirus,” Makumbi

said.

Makumbi had unearthed raw talent among the youth in the district, groomed them into versatile actors who then portrayed interesting scenes in his movies. “Ndenwa Ya Munna is a real-life movie that deals with crime, women and child abuse, false arrest, and bribery,” he said.

He added that the issues tackled in the movie were problems people were facing today. “The response has been overwhelming since we started streaming online two weeks ago,” he said.

In the lead is Martin Musetha, who plays the role of Justice, the “guy who is a problem everywhere”, and is husband to Mamsy (Mamsy Nkhumeleni).

The cast includes, among

others, Mamsy Nkhumeleni, Owen Hlungwani, Takalani Mulaudzi, Mavhungu Maiwashe, Awelani Rambau, Karabo Mantsi and Eshla Mukhari.

Art & Entertainment Doctor uses poetry ointment to heal

By Tshifhiwa Mukwevho A medical doctor by profession, author Bridget Nwovhe has been using the art of poetry to heal broken hearts and souls through her poems.

She had a passion for reading poetry and stories, and that passion has since grown into a love of writing poetry and stories.

“Writing is a way of connecting heart to brains, you expose your heart or those who could relate to their brains,” she said. “It's a way of opening an extra sense to humans.”

Nwovhe won second prize in the Sol Plaatje European Union contest just eight months after she had revealed to the world that she had a talent in writing.

“I was so excited about the award,” she said. “It motivated me to stand firm as a poet, and it made me feel more confident to share my poetry with the world.”

She had had some setbacks in life, but she had to get up and continue with the journey. “At some point I lost a bursary because my academic journey involved two universities,” she said.

“God showed up and I did

not give up; so, I conquered.”

She motivates the youths to work harder in life in order to achieve their dreams and realise the goals of their lives. “I think everyone, vitally the young, must just be determined, working harder to get what they believe in,” she said. “Don't wait for people to validate or approve things for you. I think that as youths we are failing and falling because we want people to do things for us. We just have to stay connected to our dreams and goals, that's what matters.”

She says youths should arrive at a stage where they are able to realise their dreams independently if needs be. “Funds or no funds, the goal is to keep the head above water,” she said.

The gospel star, who shot to stardom last year when she released her debut album, Nikodima, plans to return to the studio to record her second album immediately after the lockdown period.

Famously known as the Golden Voice by her fans, Ramunenyiwa said she now had enough time to compose and arrange her envisaged album in the comfort of her home. “Although the lockdown affects us negatively as artists, we

should also look at it in a positive way. Yes, it is true that we are not getting any income during the lockdown, but we should thank God that, despite the difficulties, we still have our brains to think about something good. Every cloud has a silver lining and we should use this opportunity in a profitable way. As artists, we should have something to show when we come out of this lockdown.”

She said she was happy that her first album had been well received by gospel music lovers. “Nikodima is still doing very well in the market, and it is still receiving airplay on both regional and national radio stations. I have now grown musically, and I know what my fans want from my music. That is why, when I return to the studio, I will definitely come up with another hot album that will put a

smile on the faces of all my fans.”

Ramunenyiwa, who is signed to the Musina-based G Records, added that the album would comprise 10 songs composed in various local languages. “The album will simultaneously be recorded with a music video shoot.

The project will be released at the same time, but it will require a lot of hard work. I’m happy that I have a dedicated team who will make sure that everything happens on time.”

Ramunenyiwa’s producer, Tovhowani DJ Godzilla Molea, said he had already started working on the instruments of the new album. “Because we are required to stay at home during the entire lockdown period, she sends me the songs through voice notes that I translate into instruments here in my home studio. Dikeledi is an incredibly talented artist and

we will definitely come up with something very amazing after the lockdown.”

Musina gospel sensation Dikeledi “Golden Voice” Ramunenyiwa is using the Covid-19 lockdown period to prepare for her second album.

Meet Thina, top sports presenter Thina “Chittagong” Ramantswana is a sports presenter and commentator at SABC Phalaphala FM. She has been working for the station for the past eight years.

Ramantswana went to Malema Primary School in Luvhalani, Nzhelele, matriculated at George Mbulaheni Secondary at Tshikuwi and then proceeded to a private college to study journalism.

She commentates live on Absa Premiership and first-division soccer matches and she was also part of the Phalaphala FM broadcasting team to do live commentary of the FIFA World Cup 2010 and 2014.

In addition, she has been actively involved in the broadcasting of the 2014 CHAN and AFCON respectively. She also made a guest television appearance on SABC2’s Talking about Soccer and is the first woman to do the live commentary of matches at the popular SABC Phalaphala radio station.

She was nominated for the Sportswoman in Media Award in 2014 and 2015 and also made the top three in the Woman in Media category for the SPAR Gsport Awards in 2014 and 2015.

She was also nominated for the SA Liberty radio awards in 2018 and in 2020 and in 2018 she ended in the top three.

Her message to all the women is to “never doubt that you are valuable and powerful and deserving of every chance and opportunity in the world to pursue and achieve your own dreams”. She encourages all those interested in breaking into the medium to study and get a tertiary qualification in the field.

“You need to be a people person and must be able to communicate your thoughts, ideas and information clearly and concisely, both in writing and orally. Follow those who are already in the industry and do research to learn more”.

She urges the youth to be serious with their education, so that they can make a significant contribution to the community in which they live. “The youth must stay away from drugs and criminal activities and prepare themselves for careers that will benefit them in life,” she said.

“I wish to express support for the measures announced by Pres Cyril Ramaphosa to combat the spread of the coronavirus and call on all our societies to adhere to the lockdown regulations, stay at home, get tested, washing of hands and keep the recommended social distance.”

Robert “Marobs” is alive and well...

Entertainment Many radio lovers, especially those from Musina, might be asking themselves what has happened to their once-favourite darling of the airwaves, Robert Marobs Ramphabana.

The answer is simple: Marobs is still alive but he has taken a backseat by becoming actively involved in production, voice-overs, and electronic equipment repair roles. He does independent adverts for various businesses that are aired on radio stations, particularly Musina Community Radio and Phalaphala FM. “I can run but I can’t hide from the radio. Although I am no longer actively involved in direct broadcasting, the love of

radio still has a special place in my heart. Radio made me what I am, and I will never be separated from it. However, one must grow up in the career world and I believe that standing on my own has given me the opportunity to grow as an individual. I certainly don’t regret exchanging the studio chair for an independent production role.”

Ramphabana shot to stardom in 2010 when he joined Musina FM as a presenter of the morning drive show. He was a household name in the local radio fraternity where radio was considered ‘boring’ without him.

During his five-year relationship with Musina FM, he held various positions, ranging from senior presenter and marketing manager to technical manager. He was

also a familiar face when Musina FM did its roadshows at various shopping malls and villages.

A recording artist who has released one album before, Ramphabana encourages young people to follow their dreams without giving up. “Look, I was a household name in the radio fraternity, and everyone enjoyed my voice on Musina FM. During the time when people were enjoying my voice most, I decided to follow my dreams and stepped aside from the studio. Many people complained because they were missing me. But I never looked back because I knew that there was something better waiting for me out there. Today, I’m fulfilled and happy with what I’m doing outside the studio.”

By Kaizer Nengovhela A young businessman, Mr Reuben Mosefuwa, opened his wallet and donated 400 food parcels to poor families from the four villages at Gogobole last Thursday.

The lockdown left many families in dire straits and Mosefuwa said that a lot of people within Gogobole, Tshiozwi Vhasongontevhela, Ramantsha and Ravele were living in extreme poverty and because working was impossi-

ble for them now, they found putting food on the table impossible. “Even though you can’t help everyone at once, it is possible to make a difference to some of the people.”

He said that he had been touched by the situation and decided to come to the rural villages to see for himself.

He said that although the government was doing its best to fight poverty, some people still went to bed on empty stomachs.

“I come from a poor background and grew up in a poor

family,” Mosefuwa explained.

He added that the initiative was not sponsored or politically affiliated. “All funds come from our pockets,” Mosefuwa said.

Cllr David Davhana thanked Mosefuwa for his kind heart. “He displayed what community building is all about, and I believe that others will follow suit. This will send a strong message to the community that it is good to come together and assist those who cannot do anything for themselves,” he said.

Here is what one of the mall management, Mr Joseph Shilubane, said: “Yes, the mall will allow more shops to open, but we shall make sure that shops comply with the rules. For instance, shop owners are supposed to have permits obtained from the local municipality.

By Bernard Chiguvare As the government continues calling on people to try to stop the spread of Covid-19, the Musina China Mall management has also offered a helping hand towards answering the call.

Mr Joseph Shilubane, the mall manager, in company of other mall managers, handed 1 000 masks to the Musina Municipality on Monday.

“We handed over the masks to the municipality to assist

the vulnerable as we feel Covid-19 is a dangerous virus and is spreading very fast. We will continue to identify other sectors in Musina that can be helped with masks and sanitizers,” said Shilubane.

The masks were bought from a supplier in Gauteng. Shilubane said the health personnel had verified the masks before they would be distributed for use.

Shilubane and his team are on a mission to let all Musina residents wear masks through distributing them to the

SANDF and the police.

“We decided to give to the SANDF and police since they are the arm of the government that enforces lockdown regulations. As they check compliance, they also distribute the masks to those who do not have,” said Shilubane when the management handed over the masks to the SANDF, adding that they would soon give others to the police.

The management would like for everyone visiting the mall to wear masks.

daughter, I had to explain the whole situation to her before we quarantined her at home,” said the wife. She added that she was thankful for the health workers who had attended her daughter and called at times, enquiring how the child was recovering.

The 40-year-old man said his doctor was looking after him well. He used to talk with his family regularly and is happy to be with them again.

“Anyone who ever gets into this situation should be strong and be prepared to be quarantined, so that you do not infect others. Always give messages of support to the family member affected,” said the wife in her advice to readers.

Founded by Ms Basani Macevele, Merwe United Ladies was established in 2009 and is made up of 22 players between the ages of 14 and 30.

“We are excited to be back in the Sasol League after being relegated in 2013. It has always been our dream to play in the league and getting that opportunity again means a lot to the team.

We are from a village and we carry a lot of dreams for a girl child playing football,” said Macevele.

The Sasol League has helped unleash the talent of young women footballers nationwide, such as Limpopo-born Noko Matlou, Lebogang Ramalepe and Rhoda Mulaudzi, who play for Banyana Banyana. Now in its 11th year, the league is one way in which Sasol continues to show their dedication and commitment to women’s football.

With seven matches remaining before the end of the season, Mikhado’s way to the national promotional playoffs looks clear.

The only side from the Nzhelele Valley are currently leading the pack with 52 points accumulated from 23 matches.

Bleak future for Limpopo’s PSL clubs

By Frank Mavhungu With six league matches remaining before the end of the current Premier Soccer League (PSL) season, the future of all three the Limpopo-based clubs, Black Leopards, Polokwane City and Baroka FC, as PSL affiliates is on the wire.

The trio have every reason to panic as they are lying in the relegation zone. Black Leopards, or Lidoda Duvha, are languishing at the bottom of the log with 20 points.

Polokwane City and Baroka FC are in the 14th and 13th position respectively. Polokwane City and Baroka are tied on 23 points with Amazulu FC. A quick glance at the situation of the three clubs can be summed up as “you need some luck in sport or else you will never succeed, no matter how much effort you put in”.

Unlike in the previous seasons, the three cubs did everything right at the beginning of this season. Black Leopards beefed up their squad by roping in several quality players, including Thuso Phala, Mogakolodi Ngele, Edwin Gyimah and the Guinea Bissau international goalkeeper, Jonas Mendes. To demonstrate that they did not want to leave anything to chance, Lidoda Duvha appointed the Frenchman, Mr Lionel Soccoia, as the team’s head coach.

The team failed to register a single win in five matches, prompting the management to show him the exit.

Mr Alan Clark, who was working as Mr Johnson’s assistant, was given full responsibility to ensure that Black Leopards retain their Absa Premiership franchise at the end of the season.

Whether the Thohoyandou side will be campaigning in the Absa Premiership division next season is something that remains to be seen.

Polokwane City and Baroka also had their own ups and downs this season. Rise and Shine, as they are also known, started the season with the Serbian tactician, Mr Zlatko Krmpotic, as the team’s head coach. The former Black Leopards coach, Mr Dylan Kerr, took over. Baroka were languishing at the bottom of the log when Kerr took over as the team’s head coach. Baroka, or Bakgakga, won three matches under Mr Kerr.

According to the chairman of the board, Dr Irvin Khoza, the league programme for the current season was high on the agenda at yesterday’s meeting.

The fact that the state president, Mr Cyril Ramaphosa, announced last Thursday that the country would be moving from level 5 to level 4 of the lockdown with effect from today (Friday) means that the board will be compelled to take radical decisions. When pronouncing the new changes, the state president stated that the activities that remained prohibited under level 4 included the playing of soccer matches at all levels.

The decision will undoubtedly affect the PSL’s league programme in a negative way because the league has already lost six weeks to date. Some of the decisions that the board is likely to take include playing the six remaining league matches at the earliest convenient time, even if it means in three-months’ time from now.

This decision will have far-reaching implications as it will affect the league’s future soccer seasons. The other route that the board is likely to take is the nullifying of the current season.

This decision will benefit the teams that are currently lying in the relegation zone, Black Leopards, Amazulu FC, Baroka FC, Polokwane City and Chippa United, as no team will be relegated.

Should the board opt for this scenario, they will be forced to find ways to promote two teams from the GladAfrica Championship division and maintain 18 teams in the Absa Premiership division.

Although this decision might be too expensive for the PSL, it will benefit the whole football hierarchy in the country as it gives all lower divisions an opportunity to promote their qualifying teams to the higher leagues.

Should they nullify the season, the PSL will not be the first to do so. The other countries that had already nullified their current soccer seasons include Germany, Australia, Poland, and Slovakia.
