Community builder stabbed to death The police at Tshilwavhusiku have arrested a 29-year-old man, Sonnyboy Mashau of Ramantsha, on a charge of murder. It is alleged that Mashau stabbed and killed his neighbour, Mr Calvin Makganyuwa (42), at his home at Ramantsha last Friday afternoon.

“The incident occurred at 17:30. During an ar­ gument between the two men, Mashau allegedly stabbed his neighbour in the chest with a sharp in­ strument, leading to his death,” said a spokesperson for the Tshilwavhusiku police, Const Musiwalo Mahuwa. He later died from his injuries.

After being alerted by members of the community, the police responded very quickly.

“When we arrived on the scene, the victim had already died,” Mahuwa said.

According to him, a murder case has been opened.

Mashau briefly appeared in the Tshilwavhusiku Magistrate’s Court on Monday and the case was postponed to 6 February for a bail application.

Mr Abram Makganyuwa, the deceased’s brother, said the incident has left the family in a state of shock and confusion. “Imagine having seen your brother some few days back, healthy and strong, and all of a sudden being called to identify his body at a mortu­ ary,” said a sobbing Makganyuwa.

According to Makganyuwa, the deceased and Mashau were arguing over a car jack.

The deceased’s widow, Mrs Florance Makganyuwa, said she was worried that the four children would grow up without fatherly love.

The chairperson of the Ramantsha Civic, Mr Wilson Mulabisano, said he was very disturbed by the incident. “This came as a shock to me and the whole community,” he said.

Makganyuwa was an important com­ munity builder in the area, working hard to develop young players of Ramantsha Black Swallows. He is survived by his wife and Mr Calvin Makganyuwa was stabbed to death in his four daughters and will be buried tomorrow home at Ramantsha village. at the Ramantsha cemetery.

“Communities must respect culture” One of the traditional leaders in the Vhembe region, Khosi Nthuseni Nemafukani, has urged young people in his village to respect and promote the Tshivenda culture and tradition.

The Mafukani Cultural Day, which was recently celebrated, is the brainchild of Khosi Nema­ fukani, who said he was eager to promote and preserve culture through Tshivenda cultural dances, singing and teaching young people how to respect their elders.

Khosi Nemafukani, who is from the Vhangona clan, said he learnt respecting the elders, singing and dancing cultural dances at an early age, because Vhangona’s clan are known for

“preserving and promoting cul­ ture and living a peaceful life” It was a day of dancing cul­ tural dances such as tshikona and tshigombela and teaching young people good morals, so that the Tshivenda culture would not be forgotten even by the future generations.

“Through promoting culture and customs of the Vhavenda nation, we want to establish good morals and encourage the growing nation not to forget its origin. We want to encourage the saying that goes ‘a nation which forgets its culture is doomed’ to work in our com­ munities and make Mafukani village an example in promoting its culture and tradition,” said Nemafukani.

He said that encouraging young people to actively par­ ticipate in cultural activities was another way of taking them off the streets and keeping them busy from evils such as teenage pregnancies and drug abuse.

One of the community lead­ ers in Mafukani village near Matavhela in Mutale area, Mr Robert Rakhadani, applauded Khosi Nemafukani’s vision of having a cultural day and urged everyone to support the day to be a yearly event. Rakhadani said the day also brought unity among the communities and revived them not to forget their culture and tradition, as some people are working in Gauteng where they are mixed with dif­ ferent cultures.

Electricity pay-point at Tshiozwi robbed The Makhado Municipality’s only electricity pay point in the Sinthumule area was allegedly bombed during a robbery that occurred at the Tshiozwi Tribal Offices last Sunday.

Residents are now forced to travel to the municipality’s head­ quarters in Louis Trichardt to buy their electricity. R40 000 in cash was stolen during the incident.

The spokesperson for the Tshilwavhusiku police, Const Godwin Mahuwa, said the inci­ dent took place at night, while the people were asleep.

“We are investigating a case of business robbery, following the incident,” said Mahuwa.

He added that no one had been arrested yet and that police inves­ tigations were still continuing.

bombed, he did not reveal what type of explosives were used during the incident.

The incident has now made it costly to get electricity, as resi­ dents must buy their electricity in Louis Trichardt. “It was very cheap buying electricity in the village. We did not even pay for a taxi to buy electricity,” said some of the affected residents, which included a 69­year­old granny, Ms Masindi Mulaudzi.

The Tshiozwi pay point was the second Makhado Municipal­ ity pay point to be robbed in six months, following the Kutama pay point that was robbed in July last year. Cash amounting to R22 000 was stolen during this robbery.

Makhado Municipality’s mu­ nicipal manager, Mr Shadrack Tshikalange, said that he was

very disappointed that at the same time that they were trying by all means to take services to the people, there were people who were preventing it. He said that an internal investigation was launched, following the incident.

“If we find that there was an in­ volvement of our staff members in any way, harsh measures will be taken against them,” said Tshikalange. A traditional leader, Khosi Vho Rudzani Sinthumule, said that criminals wouldn’t be tolerated in his area. “This is af­ fecting both the service and our good relationship we have with the municipality,” he said.

Sinthumule urged residents who might have seen anything to come forward and furnish the police with information, so that the culprit can be brought to book.

It is almost a month and half after the disappearance of Philemon Mukhese.

Mukhese (27) of Mangondi outside Thohoyandou went miss­ ing on 3 December 2011, after being taken to Tshilidzini hos­ pital in an ambulance. Mukhese had suffered injuries after a scuffle with a former colleague at a local tavern. He has not been seen since.

Ms Selinah Mukhese, an aunt of the missing man, said they were called to the local bar at around 08:00 on a Saturday. “We rushed there after being told that he had been attacked and was injured. We found him in the lounge with blood all over his body,” she said.

She said they persuaded him to go to the hospital for treatment.

“While we were still discussing the matter, an ambulance arrived.

They gave him treatment on the spot and asked us who was to accompany the injured man to hospital. We decided that his brother should accompany him, but when the time came for them to leave, they refused to take him along and took our son away alone,” she said.

She said they only realised that he was missing the following Monday when they went to visit him at the hospital. “When we ar­ rived at the hospital, no one could shed light as to the whereabouts of our son. We searched all the wards and everywhere, but with

no luck,” she said. She said they hade tried everything to locate him, even going to inyangas, who keep on telling them he is still alive. “All we want are answers of what had really happened to our son. We want nothing more than the man himself,” she said.

She said she is worried that the ambulance people had re­ fused to take along a member of the family, but could not ac­ count for their missing son. The young man’s uncle, Mr Alpheus Mukhese, said the loss of a loved one had brought a lot of heartache to the family. “We could not even enjoy the festive season with oth­ ers. We had to cancel most of the activities that involved the family and we concentrated on looking for our son,” he said.

He said they were worried as a family because the father of the man seemed to be losing his mind. He said the mother kept on crying and calling the name of the missing man. “We are greatly saddened as this whole incident is tearing the family apart. We have taken the father to a faraway place as he cannot concentrate,” he said. Mukhese said the Depart­ ment of Health owed them some answers about the dissapearance of their son.

“We fear the worst must have happened to him. We want to know what happened to him, but they are now distanc­ ing themselves from his disap­ pearance. The department must

tell us what happened to him,” he said. Livhuwani Mamagau, the wife of the missing man, said his dissappearance was a big loss to the family. “He used to do some piece jobs and bring back some food for us all, but we are now suffering,” she said.

Limpopo Health Department’s spokesperson, Mr Joe Maila, said he was still outside the office and would respond after checking the records. At the time of going to press, he had not responded.

Meanwhile, the Thohoyandou police appealed to members of the community who might have seen the missing man to please contact them. Mukhese has been described as dark in complexion, slender and tall. He was last seen wearing a brown denim jean, a brown shirt and brown shoes.

Those who might see him are request­ ed to inform the Thoho­ yandou po­ lice at 015 960 1000.

Mystery over deaths and injuries of dogs in Madombidzha Mirror consulted maintain that they heard nothing during the attack in the night. They only woke up to find the appalling scenes in their homes. There are also no traces of any wild, vicious predator like a lion or leopard where the dogs were found lying dead.

Rumours of rabies were strongly dismissed by those affected. This was after a resident, who also spoke to Limpopo Mirror on condition of anonymity, started claiming that there was a rabid dog that lived in the cemetery and that this dog only sneaked into homes during the night to terrorise other dogs. However, residents disagree with him, saying that it is unlikely that a rabid dog can cut off another's head or skin another from neck to waist with such viciousness.

Vho­David Mulugo is also sad after losing at least two dogs. "I feel sad over the whole thing," he says. "Two of my four dogs have survived the strange killing, but they are bruised all over their bodies. We don't know

what is eating our dogs."

In the Mpilo household they had two dogs that served as guards for the chicken pen, since feral cats had taken to terrorising the chickens. On Sunday morning, they only found Tiger's corpse with its head missing.

They searched all over the yard, even in the orchard, but Tiger's head was nowhere to be found. The second dog, Bova, had vanished and no trace of it could be seen either. "I don't have words to explain what happened with

our dogs," Vho­Kenny Mpilo, owner of the two dead dogs, said. "There's pain in my heart. I loved my dogs just like all my neighbours who are also affected like me. We don't know what is terrorising and killing them. But it's sad, you know."

When he heard about the case of the butchered dogs, the SPCA's sen­ ior inspector, Lawrence Khodobo, was deeply moved by the matter and rushed to Madombidzha to in­ vestigate.

150 Border crossers arrested Zimbabwean police in Beit Bridge impounded 22 vehicles that were being used to facilitate irregular migration and arrested more than 150 suspected illegal immigrants who intended to cross the border into South Africa during the festive period.

The arrests were made during a joint border operation with other se­ curity agencies between 20 December and 2 January.

Fifty of the suspects appeared in court on Friday and were charged with contravening a section of the Immigration Act. They were fined between US$ 150 and US$ 300 each for the offence.

The local police spokesperson, Chief Superintendent Lawrence Chinhengo, said among those arrested were 30 suspects who were known for facilitating irregular migration and border­jumping activities.

This follows after seven dogs were found dead on the morning of 15 January when residents woke up to prepare to go to church. About six dogs that escaped the mysterious, brutal attack in the affected households had bruises and injuries on their bodies.

In the Tshivule household, Skyvie is described as a beloved and lovely creature that was more than a pet to members of the family. On Sunday he was found lying dead, having been skinned viciously from his neck down to the waist. In a sad mood, they could do no more than dig a hole in the ground and bury him. "It was a hor­ rible picture to look at,” said Aifheli Tshivule as she sat under the tree reflecting on the matter. "We loved our pet and cared for him a lot. We would buy dog food for him and it made him strong and happy."

Hard work the only recipe for success Ndaedzo Secondary School in Dzwerani is closing in on the likes of Thengewe and Mbilwi high schools, who are synonymous with success.

The school has become one of the best schools with a 98,3% matric pass and is one of the top 30 schools in Limpopo. This follows on the heels of 2010’s achievement, when it obtained 82,2%. Only one of the 58 pu­ pils who wrote the examinations failed.

Principal Godfrey Manyaga was quick to point out that hard work, and only hard work, was the secret. “We have a dedicated team of teachers and manage­ ment who want to see things happenning, as well as stake­ holders who are concerned about the education of the children,” he said.

Taxi driver attacked and robbed A 26-year-old Beit Bridge taxi driver was assaulted severely and robbed of R1 700 by two unknown men who had hired him on the pretext that they wanted to be ferried to Makakavhule village outside the border town.

Police spokesperson Supt Conrad Manhai said the incident recently occurred in a bushy area near a local lodge. “The two men then got into the car and directed the driver to the lodge where, upon arrival, they ordered him to stop. They then teamed up with two accomplices who were armed with knives and a hoe and they smashed the glass on the driver’s side,” he said.

The suspects robbed the taxi driver of R 1 700 before they stabbed him all over his body with a knife, after which they fled from the scene, leaving him lying there unconscious. The victim, Mr Ny­ engera Mutsamwira, later regained consciousness and went to the police station where he reported the matter. He was taken to Beit Bridge District Hospital where he was treated and discharged.

Six youths lucky to survive accident What was supposed to be a joyride almost ended in tragedy, when six youths from Musina nearly lost their lives on New Year’s eve.

The youths were travelling on a bakkie when the driver lost control in a curve. Two of them were seriously injured, while the rest escaped with minor injuries.

One of the injured is Tshililo Sikhwari (23), who told his story: “It happened so fast as we approached a curve just outside Harper Mine in Musina. We were happy and longed to see the New Year when the driver immediately lost control. We are happy that we have survived.”

Tshililo said the driver was speeding and the curve was so sharp that it was impossible for him to control the car. “Even experienced racers like Michael Schumacher would have missed that curve. We heard a big bang before the car rolled several times and dropped all of us. There was a huge cloud of dust and we could not even see what was happening. I could not remember what hap­ pened and next until I found myself in a hospital bed on New Year’s Day.” Tshililo could not confirm or deny that they were under the influence of alcohol. “On that I cannot comment, but just know that we were happy and the mood was vibrant. I strongly believe that we were saved by the grace of God and we have learnt the hard way. While other people were celebrating Lucky to survive ... SA deports 672 The SA Department of Home Affairs on Thursday last week deported 672 more undocumented Zimbabweans through Beit Bridge border as the crackdown on illegal immigrants from the neighbouring country intensified.

The illegal immigrants arrived in their coun­ try aboard eight hired buses. The latest figure is the largest since the resumption of the deporta­ tions in October last year. Zimbabwe’s assistant regional immigration manager at Beit Bridge border post, Mrs Tamari Shadaya, said of the 672 deportees, 511 were from Lindela holding centre in Johannesburg while 161 were rounded up in various areas in Limpopo province.

“We received 672 Zimbabwean border jumpers on Thursday and they were sent to the International Organization for Migration (IOM) for vetting and assistance before deployment to their respective homes,” said Shadaya. She said on average they handled between 80 and 100 deportees a day. “We continue to urge travellers to make sure they have valid travel documents to avoid getting arrested for violating the Im­ migration Act.” On arrival in Beit Bridge, the deportees are taken to the IOM reception and support centre where they are offered temporary shelter, food and transport to travel to their respective homes.

However, most of them usually shun the assist­ ance and find their way back to South Africa through undesignated entry points along the Limpopo River, despite the dangers of being attacked by crocodiles and robbers operating in bushy areas along the borderline.

South Africa resumed the deportation of Zimbabweans on 7 October last year, following the suspension of the exercise in May 2009. The government later introduced a special dispensa­ tion during which Zimbabweans were given an opportunity to regularise their stay in the coun­ try by applying for work, business and study permits. Home Affairs officially completed the process of taking applications on 31 December last year and more than 275 000 Zimbabweans met the December 2011 deadline set by the department by which they had to apply to have their stay in South Africa regularized.

He donated gifts that included new clothes to newborn babies, toys and food. “Christmas is the day that families and friends spend time together, but other people tend to forget those who are in pain,” said Mmbadi. Reggae star silenced in Thohoyandou Well-known Limpopo reggae star Khakhathi Tshisikule caused a stir and even took his fans by surprise when he single-handedly staged a one-man protest, after he was refused permission to perform at the Thohoyandou shopping centre.

Tshisikule, who is known for his protest music and has churned out hit after hit, had sought permission from the Thulamela Municipality to promote his music in Tho­ hoyandou, but his request was turned down. He said he was not surprised by the municipal­ ity’s attitude and he knew that it was a way of silencing him and

preventing him from reaching his fans.

Pushing a wheelbarrow full of CDs, Tshisikule said he had tried to follow the righ proce­ dure, but was told that the town was fully booked. “This con­ fused me as some of the spots for which I had applied were in fact empty. This is just a way of stopping me from reaching out to the masses out there who want to listen to the messages about non­delivery of services,” he said.

Tshisikule, of Zwimandlozini fame, said instead of bowing down in defeat, he felt that he had to do something to please his fans, and that was when the wheelbar­ row idea came about. ‘It re­ ally worked; wherever I went, people came in their numbers and supported me.

“We are surprised by Kha­ khathi’s outbursts as he had not applied but just came and wanted to perfom in town. He must follow the rules and he will be treated like all artists.

“We love him as he is a good singer, but he must respect the rules set out by the municipality and his fellow artists.”

Competition highlights careers in police The South African Police Service in Limpopo is embarking on a project of encouraging the youth to get interested and involved in a career in the polcie service by hosting the “junior competitions” from district to provincial level.

Each police station trains four youths in four respective duties, namely Junior Clus­ ter Commander, Junior Vispol Commander, Junior Detective Commander and Junior Support Service Commander. Youths who win at the district level gain entry to the provincial level leg of the junior cluster compeition.

In the Vhembe area, six police stations within the Makhado cluster, namely Tshilwavhusiku SAPS, Makhado SAPS, Mutale SAPS, Mara SAPS, Waterval SAPS and Mphephu SAPS, held the junior competition at the Muduluni Community Hall in the Kutama area on 12 January. At least 24 youths from six po­ licing areas were given ample time to present their action plans on what they would do if

they were given an opportunity to become a commander.

During the presentation of speeches, the youths displayed a lot of confidence and there was no doubt that the future looked bright for all of them.

This allowed them to take each other on and do battle until the very end. The winners are Charme Lishivha (15) for Junior Cluster Commander, Sandra Ravhuhali (17) for Junior Vispol Commander, Muelelwa Mutenda (16) for Junior Detective Com­ mander and Tshulufelo Selabe (14) for Junior Support Service Commander. The Tshilwavhusiku SAPS was in the top position after it had produced two winners, Charme and Tshulufelo, while Sandra and Muelelwa were from the Makhado SAPS and Mphephu SAPS repectively.

Speaking on behalf of the

winners, Charme Lishivha, who is from the Nngweni Secondary School, said: “I never thought this competition was serious until the last minute. I thank my par­ ents who encouraged me to stay awake and prepare my speech through the night. I am one of the four winners. We’re going to Polokwane to compete against people whom we’ve never seen in our lives. We’ll prepare ourselves and come home winners.”

Khosi Vho­Rudzani Sinthu­ mule acknowledged the winners and wished them well at the provincial level. “Competitions of this nature motivate kids to be involved in the fight against crime,” he said.

The provincial leg of the com­ petition takes place on the 24 January in Polokwane, and the venue has not been confirmed yet.

“People must stop abusing each other” Thanksgiving party for well-known cleric The Vhembe based organization, Munna Ndi nnyi? (Who is a real man?) urged women, men and children to stop abusing each other.

The organisation’s chairman, Mr Bardwell Mufunwainwi, ad­ dressed a gender-based violence workshop, organised by the Vhembe District Municipality shortly before Christmas last year. It was held in the Mutale Arts and Culture Centre.

“We are worried that many campaigns are only spreading the message that men must stop

abusing women and children.

Our organisation is also visited by men who are abused by their wives and children,” said Mu­ funwainwi.

He suggested that women must in some cases support their husbands financially, so that gender based violence could come to an end. Just a few days ago, Munna Ndi Nnyi claimed it was visited by pensioner, who reported that his son forcefully took his money and left him penniless.

Maumela urged men who are abused by their wives and chil­ dren to come forward to report such cases. “We don’t want men to remain silent when they are abused. They must report it so that the law can deal with the perpetrators,” he added.

One of the participants of the dialogue, a gogo from Tsham­ dama, mentioned that she is being abused by her grandchil­ dren, who take her money when she receives her pension. “I am sick and tired of being penni­ less,” said the furious gogo.

The Tsianda Full Gospel Church at Tsianda recently hosted a thanksgiving party for their pastor. Pastor Prince Ramahala has served the congregation for more than 18 years.

Speakers spoke highly of the good work that Ramahala is doing for the church and com­ munity.

The chaiperson of the church board, Mr Shandukani Makhu­ vha, said it had become a tra­ dition at the church to show

appreciation for the good work their pastor is doing.

“As a church, we value what he is doing for us and the com­ munity at large. Through him, we have witnessed a lot of develop­ ments in the church and many years after he was deployed here, he continues to be of service to us. This is a way of showing our gratitude to him,” he said.

Makhuvha said the gesture of appreciation was meant to en­ courage him to do even more for the church and the community.

“Hard work needs to be ac­ knowledged and this is one way of saying thank you to him. We always need spiritual guidance,” he said. In response, Ramahala said he felt very humbled by the gesture.

“I am only doing what is ex­ pected of me as a man of God. I am not expecting any gratitude from my people. Appreciating me means a lot to me; it shows that people are noticing what I am doing and it motivates me to work even harder,” he said.

Makhado FM station manager in court The station manager of Makhado FM, Mr Moses Muneri, is out on bail after he was arrested for allegedly stealing a radio transmitter.

He briefly appeared in the Louis Trichardt Magistrate’s Court last Wednesday.

Muneri is facing charges of theft. Muneri’s arrest was con­ firmed by the spokesperson for the Makhado police, Capt Maano Sadike, last Tuesday. The case

was postponed to 26 January and, according to Sadike, Muneri was released on bail of R2 000.

All this resulted in the radio station’s being off the air on 3 and 4 January. This followed after Muneri’s suspension in December last year.

The station’s marketing man­ ager, Mr Takalani Khomola, who is now acting as the station man­ ager, said that the radio had to get a new transmitter which they

were renting at R6 500 a month.

“We had to contact a company from Johannesburg to come and install the new transmitter for us,” he said.

Muneri is said to be the prime suspect in the case because he was the only person with the keys to the place where the transmitter was. Makhado FM, however, is still faced with a debt of more than R700 000 which they owe their landlord.

Motorists arrested for trying to bribe cops Most wanted suspect finally behind bars Two motorists were arrested on the spot when they allegedly tried to bribe traffic officials who were on duty during a road safety campaign that was held recently on the N1 at Musina.

This happened on separate occasions when the officers were allegedly offered cash while they were enquiring about the roadworthiness of vehicles during the campaign. The of­ ficers immediately alerted the police officers, who arrested the culprits.

Mayor Carol Phiri, who was also part of the road safety campaign, praised the dedicated traffic officials for their faithful­ ness. “We need public servants who will blow the whistle on corruption and bribery. We are very proud of them and we have no doubt that they have set a good example for everyone who fights for good governance. I’m highly impressed by their good actions.”

During her official address just before the campaign, Phiri said the Musina Municipality

was happy to join forces with stakeholders to set in motion the common element of pro­ viding safety for the people, which marks the beginning of a concerted road safety effort throughout the year.

“Many of us travel to differ­ ent destinations on our roads on a daily basis. Let’s remember that one life lost is one too many. Road accidents can be avoided and many lives can

be saved. This can only be achieved though initiatives of this nature.

The urgency to deal with is­ sues of road safety effectively and efficiently cannot be over­ emphasised. We cannot allow the status quo to remain when statistics continue to show us a disturbing trend on our roads.

The Levubu police have arrested the most wanted, feared and notorious gang leader, Mabidi Ligaraba (27), who had allegedly been terrorising the Tshakhuma community.

It was reported that Ligaraba had been assaulting them, breaking into their houses and taking their belongings by force. The police, who had been looking for him for some time, arrested him at Tshakhuma last week.

The residents, who had threatened to take the law into their own hands if Ligaraba was not arrested, held several community meetings to try and solve the crime problem in the area.

Ligaraba is now facing two counts of rape, as­ sault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and common robbery.

Confirming Ligaraba’s arrest, Levubu police spokesperson W/O Solly Mukhola said that the police were told that other members of the com­

munity were afraid to open cases, fearing that they might be victimised.

“The residents are encouraged to come forward and lay charges if something had happened to them,” he said. He added that those affected should feel free to open cases with the police.

It is believed that the group of gangsters which Ligaraba led is comprised of nine men from Muledane, Tsha­ khuma, and the Tshisa­ hulu villages.

“Work harder for clean audits” - Nombembe

Auditor-General Terence Nombembe has urged government departments to work hard towards achieving clean audits, saying sound financial management will go a long way in improving public confidence in state institutions.

It was reported by the Government Communi­ cation and Information System, BuaNews Online, that Nombembe is currently on a nationwide drive to encourage clean audits by awarding those depart­ ments that have consistently received clean audits with trophies. Last Tuesday, he presented a trophy to Water and Environmental Affairs Minister Edna Molowa, for her “sound leadership” and for ensur­ ing her department achieved a clean audit in the past financial year.

A similar award will be presented to Public En­ terprises Minister Malusi Gigaba and the Minister of Science and Technology, Naledi Pandor.

Doctorate for hard-working chaplain There was excitement in the air when a hardworking chaplain, Pastor Maria Mudimeli, who had recently received her doctorate, celebrated the achievement at an event that was held at Grace Missionary Chapel Church at TshituniTshafhasi in the Nzhelele area last week.

Dr Mudimeli received her doctorate in System­ atic Theology from the University of South Africa.

She is a chaplain at the South African Police Service in Polokwane and is believed to be the first Venda woman and a woman chaplain to obtain a Doctorate in Systematic Theology.

She hails from the rural village of TshituniTshafhasi in the Nzhelele area.

Her journey in the academic world began in 1994, when she obtained a BA-degree from the Global University in the United States of America.

She then worked as a part-time lecturer at the Southern African School of Theology in 1995, before obtaining her master’s degree from the University of Venda.

She also worked at the Sekhukhune College of Education in 1996 and joined the South African Police Services as chaplain in 2002, based at the Makhado SAPS. She moved to Polokwane SAPS in 2009, where she is still working as chaplain.

Dr Mudimeli expressed her appreciation to her family for the upbringing and all the support regard­ ing her achievements.

“Growing up in a disadvantaged family back­ ground was not easy, but I am happy that I made it. I thank pastor Rathando, who took me to a Bible School in 1991,” she said.

She added that dedication and commitment were the secrets behind her outstanding achievements.

“I thank God for all He has done for me,” said Mudimeli.

Ntombi’s ambition to succeed ...

A crack Limpopo girl, who is wallowing in glory after attaining seven distinctions in the recent Grade 12 examinations, says she knew she would do it, but had not told anyone about her ambitions.

Ntombi Mashila, 17 of Mala­ mulele, who was a Grade 12 pupil at St Brendan Catholic School in Polokwane, attained distinctions in English, Xitson­ ga, Mathematics, Life Orienta­ tion, Geography, Life Sciences and Physical Sciences.

When her mother, Ms Daphne Mashila was asked about her daughter’s achievements said the family was excited. “Al­ though we knew she was one of the top pupils, we never expected such an achievement and she never talked about any distinction,” said Mashila.

When asked why she never prepared her parents for her success she said: ”I knew what I wanted from beginning and every time I read my books I did it with what I wanted in mind.”

She said it never came to her to and praise God,” she said. tell her parents she wanted the distinctions, but she knew they would be happy with her if she achieved them and did the family proud.

Ntombi says she aims to do a degree in engineering either at the University of the Witwatersrand or the Univer­ sity of Pretoria.

A devout Christian, Ntombi is a mem­ ber of the Baptist Church. “I am someone who sacrifices the time to play to do something serious in life.

Two foreigners nabbed for drug dealing Police in Limpopo have intensified their war against drugs dealers and smugglers, resulting in the arrest of two suspects, a Nigerian and a Tanzanian.

In a statement, SAPS spokes­ person for Limpopo Lt Col Ronel Otto said that, in the first incident, members from the Hawks in the province received information about a suspect who was supplying drugs in and around Mokopane. They moni­ tored the suspect for some time and on Thursday, 12 January, they moved in on him.

“The 40-year-old suspect was arrested at his place of residence in the town after our offic­ ers searched his premises and recovered packets of heroine, cocaine rocks, ecstasy tablets, dagga and cocaine powder, all to the value of R350 000. Cash to the value of R142 613 was also confiscated,” she said.

The suspect, who is from Nigeria, is expected to appear

in the Mokopane Magistrate’s Court soon. “We are continu­ ing with our investigations and there is a possibility that the suspect might be connected to more incidents of drug-related crimes,” Otto said.

In the second incident, at Beit Bridge Border Post, a suspect from Tanzania was arrested for the possession of drugs he tried to smuggle into the country.

SAPS members on duty at the border post became suspicious of the suspect and when they searched him, they found what appeared to be cocaine wrapped in plastic.

“The suspect was also seen swallowing something, and when he was taken to hospital for X-rays, it was found that more plastic bags were visible in his stomach. The suspect was admitted to Musina Hospital for observation under police guard.

The value of the confiscated drugs is yet to be established,” said Otto.

The Provincial Commissioner of SAPS in Limpopo, Lt-Gen Simon Mpembe, stated that this was only the beginning of the fight against drugs in the province.

“Besides the fact that the possession and use of drugs is a criminal act, drug users sometimes resort to committing crime to fund their dependability on the substance and this is one of the aspects that we want to eradicate. I would also like to remind local people that we need support from our com­ munities to help us fight crime.

We therefore urge members of the communities to contact the police if they see anything sus­ picious which might be linked to crime.”

The spokesperson for the Tshilwavhusiku police, Con­ stable Musiwalo Mahuwa, con­ firmed that a murder case had been opened and that investi­ gations led to the arrest of the suspect in the early hours of Christmas day. “The suspect was consequently charged with

murder,” confirmed Constable Mahuwa. He appeared before the Tshilwavhusiku Magistrate’s Court on 28 December. The case was then postponed to 6 January 2012. On the 6th the suspect was released under parental supervi­ sion. His next appearance is set for 24 January 2012.

The suspect cannot be named since he is still a minor.

“Racial” attack on pastor’s house The New Year arrived with an unpleasant surprise for Miss Sarah Mamburu of Louis Trichardt. She woke up to discover that her gate had been vandalized, presumably by a group of youngsters.

Mamburu discovered the writ­ ing on the gate early in the morn­ ing when she was preparing to go to a church service.

“I drove out and pressed my remote to lock the gate. When I looked back to make sure that the gate was really closed, I was shocked to see that someone had sprayed letters on my gate,”

said Mamburu. “The police later asked me whether I’m a politi­ cian, but I am not. I am a pastor.

I vote like any other person and I’m not associated with any poli­ tician. I don’t understand why these people would choose to spray my gate,” she said.

The culprits did not only spray Miss Mamburu’s gate, they also sprayed stop signs in the nearby streets. Miss Mamburu’s gate was sprayed two lines of letters, spelling AWEE and AWB. Mamburu suspects that it might be because she is the only black person staying in that block in

Joubert Street.

“We once had our electricity switched off from the outside electric box. This only happened to my house and to the other black owner on another block,” she said.

Mamburu said that she had reported the matter to the po­ lice, who responded to her call.

However, a case had not yet been opened by 10 January. The provincial spokesperson for the SAPS, Lt-Col Ronel Otto, this week confirmed that a case had been opened and that the police are investigating.

LTA happy with growth in tourism The Limpopo Tourism Agency (LTA) says it is happy about the tourism growth in the province, given the high volume of tourists who visited the province during the festive season.

According to LTA spokes­ person Mr Ntlhekeng Kgatla, it is good news for the province after the launch of the festive campaign last November. He said that the province continued to do well, given its strategic location as a gateway to other African countries.

“This will undoubtedly boost domestic tourism,” he said.

Kgatla said that more than 50 000 visitors made their way through Limpopo Wildlife Re­ sorts (LWR) gates during the month of December. “The same also goes for the private tourism facilities in the province, with most of them receiving very high volumes of tourists in the prov­ ince, compared to the previous year in the same period. This is a very clear indication that the domestic strategy that was devel­ oped for the province is indeed beginning to bear fruit, with more

people beginning to traverse their own province.”

He said that Kruger and Ma­ rakele National Parks were still leading the pack as the highest tourist attractions in the province.

“High volumes of tourists have also been registered at other facilities such as Forever Resorts at Bela Bela, Swadini and Tship­ ise. Other private game reserves and lodges, as well as Mapun­ gubwe National Park, which is a renowned World Heritage site, also did very well during the past festive season.”

He added that what fascinated the agency was the high number of bookings for the 4x4 trails through the Great Limpopo Transfrontier Wilderness Camp and Trails, which covers Letaba, Luvuvu and Great Limpopo Eco-Trails.

Limpopo Wildlife Resorts (LWR), the commercial wing of Limpopo Tourism Agency, has also seen a significant increase from the 20 663 visitors “who made their way through our gates during the same period last year, who spent in excess of R1.6

million.”

According to Kgatla, the five resorts that were the busiest out of the eleven in the province were Mphephu Resort, Nwanedi Resort, Doorndraai, Acacia and Rust de Winter.

“We are very proud to an­ nounce that Limpopo citizens topped the list of visitors to our resorts, followed by Gauteng and Mpumalanga. Interesting again is the increased visits by tourists from SADC countries to our resorts during the festive period.” Kgatla said that during this season, they realised that day visits had become a very popular phenomenon with local citizens, hence the increased figure.

“The visits mostly happen dur­ ing the holidays and weekends.

This has been one of the most fruitful and successful festive seasons that we have had in many years. We wish to also put it on record that there has not been any incident reported in our resorts this festive season. On this note, we wish to thank the service sec­ tor for servicing the industry with distinction,”Kgatla continued.

Armed robbers apprehended by police A 22-year-old Zimbabwean, Isaac Sibeko, and a 16-yearold minor appeared briefly in the Thohoyandou Magistrate’s Court last week, charged with robbery and the illegal possession of a firearm.

Their case has been postponed to 20 February and they were not granted bail.

Their appearance is a sequel to an incident which happened on 8 January at about 18:30, when a businessman at Tshivhilwi was attacked and robbed of his 9mm pistol, before the suspects disap­ peared into the nearest bushes.

Malelo, Thohoyandou police’s spokesperson, it is alleged the 58-year-old victim was busy with customers at his business when he was overpowered. After the incident, police launched an intensive manhunt for the sus­ pects. Their search paid off when, through information from the community, police tracked the wanted men the following day to Vhufuli, where they were hiding.

A pistol that was taken during the robbery was found hidden in a nearby mealiefield.

It is believed a third man who also allegedly linked to the

incident fled the scene when he saw the police.

Malelo said the police ap­ preciated the cooperation they received from members of the community, to which he attrib­ uted their success and the break­ through. “We always encourage members of the community to be vigilant in terms of crime and to work with us in combating crime. We know that, together with our communities, we can beat crime,” added Malelo.

He said investigations were still continuing.

Assistant referee allegedly assaulted Another assistant referee, Mr George Musekwa, was allegedly assaulted with fists when violence broke out towards the end of the match between Western Stars and Tshifhire Northern Brothers at the Madombidzha sports grounds a fortnight ago.

According to Musekwa, the an­ gry Stars players would have killed him, had it not been for the officials of Brothers. The Stars players were demanding a goal, while Musekwa said the goal was scored from an offside position.

The chairperson of the Safa Vhembe compe­ tition committee, Mr Mulimisi Muneri, said they were concerned about the incident. "As a league, we want play­ ers to use soccer as a form of entertainment and create friendship with each other. West­ ern Stars will be called to appear before the disciplinary committee and they will be charged for abandonment of the game and assaulting the referee."

Beit Bridge residents killed by ligthning Two people from Tejehanga and Matawani villages outside Beit Bridge were killed by lightning in two separate incidents last week, while an 18-month-old baby escaped with serious burns.

The local police spokesper­ son, Insp Tafanana Dzirutwe, confirmed the two deaths, which occurred on Friday and Saturday last week.

Dzirutwe said in the first case, which occurred at around 16:00,

a 20 year­old woman, Gertrude Ndlovu of Tejehanga village, was walking home from the grazing lands with her 18­month­old baby strapped on her back. Along the way, it started raining and the two were struck by lightning.

Ndlovu died on the spot while the infant sustained some serious burns all over the body.

In a similar incident the fol­ lowing day, an 18­year­old man was killed by lightning at Mata­ wani Business Centre. Notice

Dzirutwe said the victim was on his way back home and decided to pass through one of the toilets at the business centre when he was struck by lightning and died instantly. Vleifontein United were crowned as the champions of the Geoffrey Tshibvumo Soccer Challenge, after they beat the much-respected Tshiozwi Dynamos 1-0 in the final match played at the Samson Phophi Stadium on New Year's Day. The only goal of the match was scored by Musiwa Tshivhula, who pounced on a rebound in the 27th minute. Floating trophy for Khumbula Destroyers “Musangwe is here to stay” - Ndevana Khumbula Young Destroyers were crowned the champions of the annual Zama Zama Soccer Challenge last Saturday.

They beat Giyani All Stars 5-4 in the final of the competi­ tion at the Giyani Homu 14 ground.

The winner was determined through penalty shoot-out, after the teams played to a 1-1 fulltime score.

Khumbula All Stars were pre­ sented with R10 000, a floating

trophy and gold medals during a ceremony that was held at the ground immediately after the final. Giyani All Stars received R5 000 and silver medals. The third- and fourth-placed teams, Khumbula Masters and Fighters, received R2 500 each.

The four teams that were booted out in the quarterfinal stage, Juluka Benfica, Blue Birds, Golden City and Liv­ erpool, received a consolation prize of R1 000 each.

The trophies at stake were displayed shortly before the kick off or the final.

Several players were pre­ sented with individual awards for their outstanding perform­ ances during the tournament.

The top goal scorer (Akani Banda of Giyani All Stars), best goalkeeper (Matimba Shi­ mange of Giyani All Stars) and player of the tournament (Vutivi Mabunda of Giyani All Stars) were each presented with trophies. The best coach of the tournament, Mr Goodman Mathebula, of Khumbula Young Destroyers, was also presented with a trophy.

Khakhala Netball Club were the champions of the tournament in the netball category. They were presented with a floating trophy and gold medals.

Leopards coach back from honeymoon Black Leopards coach Mr Vladislav Heric believes he is a refreshed man after taking advantage of the festive holidays to enjoy his honeymoon with his new wife.

Earlier this week, Heric said that he had tied the knot last April. According to him, he and his wife could not go on honeymoon after the wedding, due to pressing work commitments. He further stated that they spent three weeks on honeymoon in Cape Town.

“If you are in situation where I am with my team, you really need a good holiday, and thank God I have had one,” he said in acknowledgment of Leop­ ards’ position on the log and the quality time that he spent with his wife over the festive season.

known to many as Muswa Wa Roma of Matanda outside Thohoyandou, studied for a diploma in commerce, but never practiced her trade after being swallowed by the photographic bug.

It started in 2008 when she entered a competition that was run by SABC’s Phala­Phala FM, where the prize was a camera. Little did she not know that by winning the competition it was to change her life and career path.

She is today one of the few women photo­ graphers who are making an impact in the male dominated terrain in Vhembe.

Tshivhase has become a regular face at wed­ dings, funerals, parties and other functions where she would be seen doing what she likes best, taking photos and videos.

“Never in my wildest dreams did I ever think that I would one day be hired to cover functions. I never imagined myself standing in front of people holding a big camera. Winning my small camera changed my life,” she said.

She added that her late brother, who was a well­ known photographer, taught her the ropes and over the years she worked hard at mastering the trade.

“When I started, people would hire me just to find out if I would be able to do the job. After giving them the best, they would recommend me to others and my client base increased,” she said.

She said the business is able to provide food for herself and her family.

The players of Madombidzha Western Stars were allegedly attacked after a Safa Vhembe SAB league match against Zamenkomste United Brothers, which was played at the Zamenkomste grounds on Saturday.

According to the PRO of Stars, Mr Ronny Muthambi, after the game there was unruly and barbaric behaviour, “insti­ gated by hooligans who are said to be fans of Brothers.” Muth­ ambi said angry people from Zamenkomste hurled stones at the vehicle of the Stars.

“One man came when our players were undressing after the match and went straight to our player Percy Munonoka,” Muthambi said. “This man beat Munonoka with a stone in the face and he was seriously injured. Other people joined

Mr Zane Mamafha of United Brothers expressed regret about the incident and apologised to Stars and the league. He claims that the perpetrators are not fans of the club. “The hooli­ gans are not supporters of our team,” Mamafha said. Hundreds of supporters for Rospa United, who watched their team’s game against Modimolle Aces at the Tshifulanani Stadium last Saturday, left the stadium with sore hearts, following their team’s 0-2 defeat.

Although United’s slender striker, Mashudu Mashapha, was out of touch, the team’s technical staff allowed him to play for the whole match. The referee, Mr Jelly Chavani, remained silent at the time when everyone thought he would award United an indirect free kick outside the box. This was after Mashudu Mashapha was brought down.

Realising that the ref­ eree was not concerned about the infringement, Meshack Maphangule approached him angrily,

accusing him of favouritism. He was reprimanded with a yellow card.

The game lost its original tempo towards the end of the first half. The second half saw the visitors from the Waterberg District play more attacking football. They scored their first goal in the 67th minute. Their Rastafarian mid­ fielder, Johannes Monene, made a sharp turn after receiving a neat pass from Patrick

Nkomo and unleashed a ground cut­ ter. Mashudu Mashapha of United missed another fortune in the 74th minute. His half volley hit the side net with the

keeper already beaten. Carswell Mabasa of United left the pitch after sustain­ ing an injury. He was replaced with Isaac Makhuvha. Aces increased the margin through Freddy Hlongwane. He capitalised on Ntsieni Makhado’s clearing error and scored an easy goal in the dying minutes.
