Policeman hacked to death

By Silas Nduvheni The South African Police Services (SAPS) in the Vhembe region and the Mudau family in Thohoyandou P East are in mourning, following the untimely death of one of their members, who was killed in the line of duty.

W/O Stanley Mudau (53) was hacked to death on Sunday morning while trying to arrest a rape suspect. He was killed instantly.

The incident took place at about 08:45. The national spokesperson for the SAPS, Brig Vish Naidoo, confirmed the incident and said a murder docket had been opened with the SAPS in Thohoyandou. He said that no arrest had been made yet and the police were still investigating the case.

He said the suspect had allegedly hacked the policeman as well as a 17-year-old rape survivor in Sibasa’s central business district, killing the policeman instantly and seriously injuring the rape survivor. He said the Family

Violence Child Protection and Sexual Offences detective had arrived at his office in Thohoyandou, where he had met the rape survivor who had alleged that she had been raped by her uncle.

“The W/O acted immediately to assist the complainant, and while conveying her to the local police station, he came across the suspect in the Sibasa CBD. His attempt to arrest the suspect turned fatal when the suspect produced a panga and hacked to death the police officer,” said Brig Naidoo. The suspect fled thereafter on foot, but not without also hacking and seriously injuring the rape survivor with the same panga.

According to Naidoo, the injured teenager is currently undergoing treatment at a local hospital.

Family spokesperson Mr Duncan Mudau, the elder brother of the deceased, said the family was saddened by the untimely death of a valuable family member. “We are worried as a family by the way he was brutally attacked while serving the interests of the community.

We urge the police and other law-enforcement officials to speedily arrest the suspect,” said Mudau.

National Commissioner of Police General Khehla John Sithole has conveyed his condolences to the family of their fallen colleague and has assured the family that everything possible would be done to ensure that the suspect was arrested, and that justice prevailed. “The gruesome attack on the member must be condemned in the strongest possible terms. I urge the communities to rally behind the police to track down the suspect and arrest him as soon as possible,” said Sithole.

W/O Mudau will be buried on Saturday in Mbaleni cemetery near Lufule village with the funeral service starting at his home in Thohoyandou P East at 06:30.

He left behind his mother, Vho-Tshinakaho Mudau, his wife, Ms Elisa Mudau, and five children, Vhutshilo, Fhulufhelo, Olugaho, Khuliso and Adivhaho.

Luvhuki wins award for mukusule

Well-known businessman and philanthropist Dr Calvin Mutwanamba celebrated his birthday in style the past weekend. The event took place at the True Vine Church outside Malamulele on Sunday. Dr Mutwanamba “adopted” the Hayani mental hospital in 2002.

He donated items such as blankets, food and television sets to be used by the patients. “I adopted the mentally ill patients of Hayani and I promised to do this until I die, because I believe in giving,” said Dr Mutwanamba. On Tuesday morning, the spokesperson for the council, Musanda Vho-Luvhaivhai Tshivhase, issued a media statement encouraging Vhembe residents to follow prevention steps as a vaccine for the virus has not yet been found.

“The number of victims is growing, and we find it of paramount important to encourage the traditional leadership and the entire nation to stand up in arms and fight against the spreading of this deadly disease,” Tshivhase said in a statement.

“Our people must take this coronavirus seriously and

must start working together by following all the precautionary measures steps as stipulated by the national government.”

Tshivhase further appealed to all community structures, such as churches, schools, soccer associations, businesses, farmers, the transportation industry and others, to assist in order to reduce spreading of the virus.

“The coronavirus is not a joke but a reality and lives are lost. We humbly request those members of the community who have clean water to assist those who cannot access clean water, and the district municipality must also provide clean water to our disadvantaged rural communities.”

Livhuki runs Madidingwe Security and Projects, which offers both modern and traditional food restaurant in Louis Trichardt, and farming products from Ramavhoya village in Nzhelele.

“I introduced mukusule processing in my business in 2018 after realising that, in winter, fresh muroho straight from the farm is in short supply since everyone would be selling it,” she said. “I then started selling freshly packaged dried muroho.

So, the processing of mukusule is termed a value chain.”

She also distributes her mukusule to Spar Louis Trichardt and Livhuki Traditional

Livhuki had previously won numerous farming and youthin-business awards for her farming expertise, and the prizes had served as a motivation for her to work even harder.

She is an entrepreneur who believes that in order to preserve a business enterprise, one needs to work hard and have a strong, motivated team. “For my farm and restaurant, I have 10 full-time employees and 15 part-time ones,” she said. “I am glad that I am fighting unemployment in our area.”

The matter may be heading to court. According to Baloyi, they were issued with court papers by Shirinda, but when they went to court, Shirinda “found an excuse not to avail himself ”.

During an interview with Samuel Shirinda, he denied that he was selling stands to people from outside the CPA. He said that he was demarcating stands for qualifying beneficiaries.

Shirinda said that the original executive members of the Mavhungeni CPA were all dead and the CPA was left with only one member, who had resigned in 2006. He said that a group calling themselves the Mavhungeni CPA were refusing

to work with the community.

According to him, this group had leased a portion of the farm to a commercial farmer, Mr Carl Henning of Munuzwu.

Shirinda said the Xikopokopo Community Farming group did not agree with the lease. He also accused the Mavhungeni members of only benefiting themselves.

Shirinda denied that he and his group had sent young people to disturb the annual general meeting held at Mbho­ kota. He said that they had been invited by the Department of Rural Development and Land Reform to the meeting because the people attending the meeting did not constitute a quorum.

Meanwhile, the mayor also informed residents that councillors were supposed to hold meetings in their wards to inform the community of any developments. The councillors must also provide feedback to the office of the mayor.

“We are going to go back to our offices and come up with a fresh programme of action that is going to assist us with the concerns that you have raised. We are also going to develop a monitoring and evaluation programme, so that when we come here, we must have reports that are authentic. From now on we are going to interact with the leadership,” promised Makhado Mayor Samuel Munyai on Sunday.

Munyai made the remarks at a meeting that was called by the Makhado Crime Prevention and Service Delivery Forum on Sunday at Louis Trichardt. The municipality was to report back on the issues raised by the residents on 14 July 2019.

The mayor and his team were supposed to give feedback on the concerns raised on 8 March 2020, but the mayor requested another week to attend to the issues accordingly.

During Sunday’s meeting, residents expressed their disappointment with the progress report. Speaker after speaker complained that the municipality had not answered their concerns.

Also in attendance were traditional leaders, members of ward committees, community structures and interested members of the public.

“Oversight and accountability help to ensure that the municipality implements programmes and plans in a way consistent with policy, legislation and the dictates of the constitution. The functionality of the internal governance arrangements in a municipality is to a large extent determined by the effectiveness of its committee system and oversight in the municipality.”

These were the words of Cllr Philemon Nare, the chairperson of the Municipal Public Accounts Committee (MPAC) in Musina Municipality. He said this during the MPAC public hearing at Ha-Manenzhe, Ward 9 of Musina Municipality last Wednesday.

Local lady creates unique flower pots

By Tshifhiwa Mukwevho Martha Raphalalani is an artist in her own right, and she is successfully cementing her career in stunning fashion as she displays her products along the R522 Nzhelele road at Tshavhalovhedzi village.

She has always been a businesswoman who tried stocking and selling various household wares, and just some years ago she started making cleaning materials that she then sold to the public.

Now she has just started making flowerpots that are no ordinary items but are eye-catching articles of genuine art.

“There was a time when my household cleaning products business was not that steady as we know that businesses sometimes go through that phase, but then it dawned on me that I had to do something else to keep my business running,” she said.

Raphalalani believes in innovation, so she started making flowerpots that were unique to the area. “It was just some two months ago, and today I am excelling in decorative and stylish flowerpots,” she said.

She designs the flowerpots in her own artistic style but then lets a customer select a colour combination of their liking. The flowerpots can be used both

This comes from a reputed singer, music producer and engineer, Big Ropza, who was born Rofhiwa Phuluwa at Lufule Two in the Thohoyandou area. He is also a co-founder of the recording label Encoree Red. “I started out as a dancer in the Lufule locality and then grew through the years into the singer and music producer I had become today,” he said.

“I had a friend who owned a computer, so we discovered beat-making software around 2003. That was when I started learning about making music. I decided to not only make beats but to sing and rap along with them alongside childhood friends DJ Rabza and Gvenaque.”

By Tshifhiwa Mukwevho Razie Kay, also known as Rudzani Khavhela of Maungani village, is one singer who has found comfort, healing and life's purpose in music.

He has just set the music world ablaze with hit songs such as Mbilu yanga, Romantic, and Revenge – but he will be announcing his upcoming project shortly.

“Music is a medicine to those who listen to it and get to enjoy it,” he said. “It's a therapy. It's also a weapon that we use to fight prejudices of the social systems that suppress vulnerable people.”

He started singing when he was at primary school, where he also excelled at music com-

petitions. “I even got myself recorded but just for the fun part of listening to my voice on instruments and it all made some sense even at that stage,” he said. “Some of the songs became so popular on the school grounds and I was put up there on the stage as the singer of the moment.”

He mentioned Lucky Dube, Colbert Mukwevho, Meriam Makeba, Bob Marley, and Yondo Sisters as some of the artists who inspired him.

“I still look up to my manager, Rita Dee, as a strong mentor to me,” he said. “She's the only woman who showed me that it doesn't matter where you come from but that you can make it in this industry if you work hard.

Chibika’s secret guitar generates pleasant sounds

By Tshifhiwa Mukwevho The sounds of Ntuwiseni Hector Mafhara are melodious and pleasant to listen to, as his voice meanders with the lyrics and the result is a well-arranged musical project.

This is the very rhumba artist who has become well known as Chibika, of Chibika and The Secret Boys. He resides at Tshifudi Mushungwa village. He strums his lead guitar while he sings. He first discovered music when he was 16 years old in 2006.

“At the time I was playing drums and bass guitar at the church,” he said. “I love rhumba, and I was inspired mostly the great earlier kwasakwasa generation.”

He has just released a full-length album, Zwakale, and it consists of six tracks, which are Gole litswu, Zwakale, Khotsi fhatutshedza, Aswinyauli, Vhananga, and Naho ni kule.

“The highlights of my career as an artist have been to feature in other artists' projects as backing vocalist and a guitarist through the years,” he said. “I would also like to thank Mr Edward Mphaga for noticing my talent and making sure that he recorded me.”

Mainganye wins lifetime achievement award

“My gratitude goes to Prof Kim Berman for absorbing most of my students for further training in printmaking,” he said.

This seasoned artist has a message for the young and talented generation of artists: “Please stop singing the song 'There's no job!'; rather say, 'There's no money!', and get up to start doing something positive about it. Be innovative!”

He said that he was worried about the mythical perception that art was for the less intelligent. “If that were the case, why does most of the so-called civilised world put more emphasis on it?” he said.

“Going through the congratulatory messages just after the awards, I was really impressed by what Nathi Gumede of the Art Bank said. He hinted that we are not recognised in our own province and yet the bulk of the most outstanding sculptures come from the Vhembe region.”

Mainganye stated that it was sad to know how culturally rich the Vhembe region was, with art collectors and educators flocking from all over the world to feast on what Vhembe people tend to ignore. “I somehow understand the reason why Rudzani Nemasetoni decided to stay in the 'Big Apple' (New York) and became an American citizen rather than starving in Mzanzi (South Africa),” he said. “However, I find much purpose in my work and the fact that I am continuing to contribute towards the SA art industry.”

The veteran artist and art teacher Avhashoni Mainganye was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award during The Arts & Culture Trust's annual awards at River Meadow Manor in Pretoria.

The ACT Awards comprises the Lifetime Achievement Award and ImpAct Award categories, and they are bestowed on individuals and organisations that have made a significant contribution to cultural life in South Africa.

“The award has uplifted my spirit as an artist based in the art-unfriendly environment,” Mainganye said. “It also feels like being given a pat on the shoulder, it's like hearing a divine voice that says 'the big Brother is watching you'. And the ceremony itself has afforded me the opportunity to share the stage with great minds in different art forms, like Prof Njabulo Ndebele and Thokho Ntshinga, who were recognised for their oeuvres in literature and theatre respectively.”

The award consists of a trophy and a cash prize. Nedbank sponsored the Lifetime Achievement Award for Visual Arts, which Mainganye received.

Mainganye has travelled most European countries where he exhibited his work and conducted art masterclasses.

Even here at home, he is regarded as a great art teacher who has impacted on many young and older artists' lives, the very artists who are today known and celebrated in most parts of the world.

“The number of artists and students that I have mentored is countless,” he said. “I have helped both the determined students and what I would regard as the art pioneers in our region at different levels. I have been some kind of 'brother's keeper', making sure that all art information is shared among the artists.”

Meet Sharon Ravele Sharon Ravele is versatile radio personality with 24 years’ experience in radio broadcasting. She is a hardworking woman who has gone through the ranks, from being a radio presenter to becoming programme manager and is currently Phalaphala FM’s acting station manager.

Ravele matriculated at Mphaphuli Secondary School and received a BA-degree at the University of Venda in 1995. A year later, she received a diploma in education from Univen and in 2006 she obtained a certificate in radio management at the SABC. In 2007 she received training in customised project management at the SABC and in 2014 she received a certificate in management development at the SABC. She became station programme manager in 2013 and since 2019 has also been acting as the station manager.

Ravele ascribes her success to hard work and a continuous striving to be the best in a career that demands a lot of discipline and determination. She said that she would continue to do her job and motivate young people.

Her listeners are very important to her and she will always appreciate their continued support. “I need more skills to improve my work environment, and I want to tell the youth that it is important to get an education first, so that you can make a significant contribution to your community,” she added.

“For me, radio means opportunities,” she said. “It bridges the gap between our people and the world.

Radio inspires and instils hope. With radio, we learn the difference between right and wrong. Radio has given me an opportunity to do something in the community, you see. I have always wanted to be part of change. Radio has also taught me how to speak to a larger audience. I am now confident to speak or voice my opinion,” Ravele said.

Ravele explains that she was taught to believe in her dreams and herself. Being an introvert, she was naturally drawn to creative writing to express her thoughts and perspectives, rather than expressing them openly.

She added that one important thing she had learnt in radio journalism “is that you must always be prepared to learn a thing or two in your interaction with the public”. This is also true of her character as she is an informer, entertainer and educator, but, most of all, the voice that accompanies listeners.

She urged young people to refrain from all acts of criminality and focus on schoolwork. According to her, pupils need to be given moral education that encourages them to stay away from committing crimes. “It is important for elders and teachers to tell children about the dangers of involving themselves in crime,” she said.

Mayor promises a house for struggling granny

By Ndivhuwo Musetha Life will never be the same for granny Elisa Phophi, following the promise of a free house by Thulamela Mayor Avhashoni Tshifhango.

Tshifhango, together with members of his executive council, Speaker Humbulani Mulovhedzi, Chief Whip Grace Mahosi, Municipal Manager TE Maluleke, traditional leaders and local councillors visited Phophi (65) at her home, Tshithuthuni, last Friday morning before an imbizo that was held in the area.

During the courtesy visit, Tshifhango handed over food parcels and other important household items that included bath soap, sugar, washing powder, matches, candles, powdered milk, salt, five blankets, mealie meal and soup.

After confirming that Phophi is staying in an old but neat house with her two children and two grandchildren and is struggling to make ends meet from her old-age government grant, Tshifhango pledged that the municipality was going to build a new house for her and the family.

He said the house, which will be built soon, would be

covered with tiles on top, with a ceiling and tiles on the floor.

In responding to the unexpected gesture, Phophi said she was out of words to express her gratitude. “I am happy about these groceries, but I am happier about the house I am going to get. During rainy days, my house changes into a dam as it becomes filled with water,” said a very excited Phophi.

Vhamusanda Vho-Thandululo Tshivhase said he was happy that one of the needy families had their prayers answered. He urged the municipality to do more for the people. He said the municipality was well represented in ward 28 by Councillor Nompi Phalanndwa, whom he described as a good servant of the people.

During the imbizo, Tshifhango was told about incomplete RDP houses, with five that are kept on hold and some that have not been completed for the past 10 years.

The community said some houses still needed for the electricity to be switched on since the completion of electrification. They also raised their concerns about damaged roads that were caused by heavy rains. The community

said water shortages were a serious problem in the area.

A need exists for speed humps or a tarred road to avoid accidents that are also taking people’s lives.

The issues of crime, especially housebreaking that mostly happens during load shedding, and unemployment of the youth who are not armed with formal training and other qualifications, were also raised.

In his response, Tshifhango said damaged roads would be fixed immediately. He also said he was touched to see that “our people still walk distances to access health services like clinics. We will forward all concerns of issues that do not fall under us to relevant offices in the district and province.

“We know that water is also a major concern here, but we will liaise with our district municipality to make sure this issue is solved,” said Tshifhango, who also handed food parcels to other needy families during an imbizo held at Remember My Promise Sports Grounds.

Joyful weekend for United Brothers

By Frank Mavhungu Last weekend was a joyful one for Gwamasenga United Brothers. Not only did they collect six points in the two MMK Administrators League matches they played over the week-

end, but they managed to score seven goals.

Brothers beat the Stream D log leaders, Muziafera Blue Eagles, 3-1 at the Gwamasenga grounds on Saturday.

They went further to beat Cobra Stars 4-2 at the Tshisaulu Mmbengeni Kone grounds the following day.

Zwidofhela “Ndoro” Musandiwa, the Brothers’ lethal striker, was a marvel to watch in both matches. He scored a brace against Blue Eagles on Saturday. As if that was not enough to impress the team’s fans, Ndoro scored a hat trick in their game against Cobra Stars.

Their game against Cobra Stars provided the maximum entertainment from the onset to the end. At one stage, United Brothers were leading 3-0.

Their opening goals came four minutes into the game. Ndoro

was brought down within the box and the referee, Mr Fhulufhelo Masindi, awarded a penalty to Brothers. Ndoro made no mistake from the white spot.

He was on target again nine minutes later. He beat the keeper with a half volley. Tshifhiwa Khameli scored the third moments later.

Cobra Stars did not lose hope, even though the Brothers’ victory was almost certain. They pulled one back through Munewanga Mudau in the 34th minute.

They also received a penalty after Excellent Nekhavhambe was brought down within the penalty box.

Cobra Stars increased the margin to 3-2 towards the end of the first half.

Mulalo Ranwedzi beat the keeper with a ground cutter. He finished off a rebound, following Khodani Netshilindi’s attempt. The visitors put the matter beyond doubt when Ndoro Musandiwa completed his hat trick with a header after a square pass from Khadani Davhula.

Leopards’ performance frustrate coach Clark

By Frank Mavhungu The caretaker coach of Black Leopards, Mr Allan Clark, is a frustrated man. Speaking to a contingent of journalists shortly after his team’s 0-1 loss to Baroka FC in their Nedbank Cup quarterfinal game at the Peter Mokaba Stadium last Saturday, the 40-year-old mentor could not hide his frustration. Saturday’s defeat was the fourth in a row for Leopards.

Lidoda Duvha lost 0-1 to Orlando Pirates, 1-2 to Polokwane City, 0-2 to Baroka FC in a league match before their defeat on Saturday. “It is now becoming stressful for me as the team’s coach as we lost all four matches out of our own doings,” he said.

“We are fast becoming our own enemy.

According to my observations, we defended well. They got a penalty that we saved and gave ourselves a chance to stay in the game, but unfortunately we soon conceded an own goal,” he added. Clark further indicated that it was heart-breaking for him since they defended well and conceded silly goals.

He again stated that although mistakes were part of the game, his team seemed to be the hardest hit.

Clark’s counterpart from the Baroka camp, Mr Dylan Kerr, concurred with Clark, saying Leopards did not deserve to be fighting for survival at this stage as their performance was superb.

Baroka were awarded a controversial penalty in the 75th minute.

The Leopards’ keeper, Rotshidzwa Muleka, braved the shot and palmed the ball away for a

corner kick. A defender of Leopards, Josef Douhadji, kicked the ball back into his own net to clear, causing an own goal.

Goodman Mosele, Baroka’s midfielder, was nominated Man of the Match. He received a trophy and cheque of R5 000 after the game.

Vhadau Vha Damani miss golden opportunity

By Frank Mavhungu Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila (TTM) are still battling to come to terms with the 0-1 defeat they suffered at the hands of JDR Stars in their GladAfrica Championship League match that was played at the Soshanguve Giant Stadium outside Pretoria on Saturday.

TTM did not lose their position on the log standings, despite the defeat.

They are still in the fourth position with 38 points.

Mr Abel Makhubele, said that while he fully agreed that the State President’s decision was a wise and responsible move, he was trembling with fear of the unknown.

He revealed that his team was in top form when the pronouncement was made and that he was not sure if the team would be able to maintain the same form when they returned to the battlefield on a date still to be decided upon.

He further stated that his team had

not stopped training after the pronouncement, saying it was business as usual in the camp.

Should they manage to maintain the good form in their remaining seven matches, Mikhado will represent the province in the national promotional play-off tournament that is scheduled for the second week of June in Nelspruit, Mpumalanga. Mikhado were the ambassadors for the Limpopo Province at the same event that was staged in Cape Town last year.

Just like the country’s professional football body, the Premier Soccer League (PSL), the South African Football Association (SAFA) has issued a statement informing all their affiliates about the postponement of all their league matches until further notice.

The pronouncement means that all matches involving the ABC Motsepe League, the SAB League and Local Football Associations (LFAs) that were scheduled for this weekend have been postponed until further notice.

The pronouncement is in line with the State President’s decision to prohibit all public gatherings that involve more than 100 people as part of the government’s many ways to mitigate the spread of the Coronavirus or COVID 19.

He said that his team had a problem of conceding goals as a result of their defenders’ careless mistakes. He reiterated the fact that the pronouncement came at the right time, saying they would use the time to tighten up the team’s loose ends. Lidoda Duvha lost four matches in a row, including last Saturday’s 0-1 defeat to Baroka in their Nedbank Cup match.

Mr Dylan Kerr, Baroka’s head coach, said that while he fully supported the league’s decision to postpone the fixtures, he felt that the pronouncement would work against his team. He again stated that his team was likely to lose momentum because of the postponement. According to him, the spirit is high in the camp after the team won two matches in succession.

Polokwane City’s mentor, Mr Clinton Larsen, said he did not care what happened with the league and that his boys were always ready to commence anytime.

The three Limpopo-based clubs are among the last four teams on the current log standings. Black Leopards were supposed to host Maritzburg United in their league match at the Black Leopards’ caretaker coach, Mr Allan Thohoyandou Stadium tomorrow.
