Twee in hof oor dieselroof Deur Andries van Zyl Die twee verdagtes wat Vrydag, 13 Mei, aangekeer is in verband met die diefstal van sowat R5,5 miljoen se diesel by ‘n plaaslike diesel depot het Maandag in die hof op Louis Trichardt verskyn. Die gewaagde diefstal het behoorlik die tonge laat klap. Omstreeks 19:00 die aand van 7 Mei het ‘n groep gewapende mans die Alliance Fuel diesel depot in Louis Trichardt se personeel oorval. Die personeel is in kamers vasgemaak en toegesluit. Nog ‘n personeellid, die 43-jarige mnr. Andrew Goosen, is byna noodlottig gewond nadat die mans hom drie keer geskiet het. Wonderbaarlik het hy die aanval oorleef. Die gewapende mans het met verskeie ongemerkte diesel tenkwaens die perseel ingery en diesel getap tot ongeveer 04:00 Sondagoggend. Hulle het daarna gevlug. Die personeel kon daarin slaag om hulself te bevry, waarna hulp ontbied is. Mediese hulp kon ook aan Goosen verleen word. Die polisie het egter Vrydag, 13 Mei, ‘n deurbraak gemaak toe hulle gedurende die vroeë oggendure (01:00) op ‘n diesel depot in Vanderbijlpark (Gauteng) toegeslaan het. Knap speurwerk het hulle na dié depot gelei. Met die polisie se aankoms by die depot het twee mans in hulle Toyota bakkie gespring en weggejaag. Dit het ‘n hoëspoed jaagtog en wilde skietery tussen die verdagtes en die polisie tot gevolg gehad. Die verdagtes kon van die pad gedwing word, waarna een gearresteer is. Die tweede verdagte kon egter daarin slaag om te voet te ontsnap. By nadere ondersoek is drie ongemerkte diesel tenkwaens op die depotperseel gevind, nog vol diesel - vermoedelik die diesel wat by Alliance Fuel gesteel is. ‘n Vierde dieseltenkwa is omstreek 08:30 dieselfde oggend by die Lebombo grenspos met Mosambiek voorgekeer, waar die tweede verdagte aangekeer is. op klagte van onder meer roof met verswarende omstandighede en poging tot moord. Hul saak is uitgestel tot 24 Mei vanjaar vir verdere polisieondersoek en borg. Hulle sal in aanhouding bly tot dan. Intussen is die polisie steeds op soek na die eienaar van die depot in Vanderbijlpark, ene mnr. William Macholo. Die polisie het gevra dat Macholo sal aanmeld by die naaste polisiestasie, aangesien hy hulle moontlik sal kan help met hulle ondersoek. Die soektog na die oorblywende verdagtes duur ook steeds voort. Wat dit betref het die polisie gevra dat enig iemand met inligting hieroor vir luitenant-kolonel Richard Boshomane sal skakel by tel. 079 894 5501 of die polisie se tolvrye nommer by 08600 10111.

Base suffers almost three-day-long blackout due to “technical” hiccup By Andries van Zyl Members of Air Force Base Makhado in Lim popo were left without electricity after their power supply was cut last week because of an apparent “technical” hiccup regarding the payment of their electricity account. The cutting of electricity to not only a national key point but one of the biggest air force bases on the continent raised several questions. Getting answers from the South African Air Force (SAAF), however, proved quite difficult. The Zoutpansberger eventually contacted the national South African National Defence Force (SANDF) spokesperson, Brigadier General Mongezi Kweta, on Friday. He was, unfortunately, on sick leave and asked the newspaper to direct our questions to one of his junior staff members in die media liaison department. In short, the newspaper wanted to know whether the base’s electricity had indeed been cut and what the reason for this step was; who had cut the power; how the power cut had affected the base’s combat readiness; and when members of AFB Makhado could expect to see

the matter being resolved? Before long, the newspaper received a phone call from a lieutenant colonel from Kweta’s office, stating that the SAAF was not on a position to comment as the problem lay within a different department within the SANDF. Asked which department this was, the colonel stated that the Defence Works Formation Department (DWFD) had taken over the maintenance of, among others, air force bases, from the Department of Public Works and Infrastructure (DPWI). The colonel could not supply contact details for this department, nor could the newspaper find any contact details anywhere for said department.

In the meantime, unconfirmed reports indicated that the commanding officer of AFB Makhado had intervened and had apparently met with this department twice, on both Thursday and Friday last week, to try and resolve the problem. The base’s electricity supply was eventually restored by Saturday afternoon, according to base members. With still no answers forthcoming from the SAAF about the incident, the newspaper asked the Democratic Alliance’s Shadow Minister of Defence, Mr Kobus Marais, if he could help find answers. Sure enough, within a day Marais came back with answers after discussions with

the DWFD’s commander, Major General Joseph Ledwaba. Marais said that Ledwaba had confirmed that they had experienced a problem at the base, as well as at 15 SAI, where Eskom had problems with payments. These problems have apparently been caused by the transfer of responsibilities from the DPWI to the DWFD. Marais stated that Ledwaba had informed him that he had asked his management team to establish exactly what the problems were. “Gen Ledwaba managed to rectify similar situations elsewhere. Let’s hold thumbs that it will also happen here,” said Marais.

Verder stem hulle beskrywing ook ooreen met dié van die twee mans wat gedurende die vroeë oggendure van 18 Maart die 70-jarige Elsa Vos van Kokstraat in haar huis oorval en beroof het. Die twee se terreurveldtog het blykbaar op 3 Maart begin toe hulle ‘n familie, skaars drie huise van Vos se woning en ook gedurende die vroeë oggendure, beroof het. Tydens hierdie roof is ‘n klein pistooltjie gesteel. Hierdie wapen stem ooreen met die beskrywing van die wapen wat tydens die aanvalle op Vos en Van Wyngaardt gebruik is, asook die wapen wat tydens die rooftog by die Van Niekerks gebruik is. Rumours also abounded that the continued “call” for more violence was being fuelled by forces within opposing political factions as part of the political infighting within the Musina Municipality. As for the VDM’s plan to address the service delivery protest in Musina, they issued a statement on Tuesday, stating that water was being supplied to Musina residents at that stage, except for Extension 14, which still had no water because of the low volume of water. “Vhembe District Municipality will drill six boreholes, while Venetia Mine will also drill an additional four. In total, it will be 10 more boreholes,” said VDM spokesperson Mr Matodzi Ralushai in the statement. He added that the contractor was on site and two boreholes had already been drilled. All that was left to do was to equip and electrify the boreholes to augment the water supply. Government has another lesson to learn regarding the violent protests in the border town of Musina the past week in reaction to poor service delivery. This time, the constant dry taps sparked the unrest, with the Vhembe District Municipality (VDM) singled out as the culprit. The situation in Musina became increasingly intense from Tuesday, 10 May, when residents first took to the streets, burning tyres and barricading streets, in protest against the town’s chronic water shortages. In response, the Vhembe District Municipality issued a statement on 11 May, stating that they were trying to restore the water supply to the town. Also on 11 May, Musina Mayor Godfrey Mawela addressed residents, calling for calm. Violence flared up again, however, on Thursday 12 May, and the police had to call in reinforcements to contain the situation. Carnage followed, with municipal infrastructure being damaged, vehicles being stoned or torched, and shops being looted. One unconfirmed report indicated that one person had died after being shot during the protests. Who had shot him and where could not be confirmed. To curb the surge in violence, the police had to use rubber bullets to disperse the protesting crowds and try and restore calm. On Friday, the Limpopo police issued a statement announcing that they had arrested four suspects on charges of public violence, arson and malicious damage to property, following the violent protest action. They also stated that the police would remain in the area as the situation remained volatile. In the meantime, provincial police commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe urged the public to raise their concerns peacefully and desist from resorting to violence. “Blocking roads, looting businesses and damaging properties are serious offences and police will not hesitate to act against the perpetrators,” said Hadebe. Numerous residents also expressed their extreme dismay with the criminal elements within their society who decided to

4x4 Eco Family Challenge The Louis Trichardt 4x4 Club invites the region’s 4x4 enthusiasts to their next 4x4 Eco Family Challenge in the Sand River (Mopane area) on Saturday, 28 May. Entry costs R300 per vehicle, with the drivers’ meeting taking place at 09:00. The events hosted the day include blindfold reverse, axle twister, sand surfing, time trials and slingshot shooting. These events will test drivers’ physical, mental and driving ability, to name but a few. Spectators can join in the fun at R100 per vehicle entry fee. The day promises fun for the whole family. Kremetart Cycle Race On 11 June this year the Soutpansberg will once again play host to the very popular Kremetart Cycle Race this year. The event will be presented for the 30th time. Over a distance of 175km, this stage race is the only one in South Africa that cultivates endurance and experience for other important cycling events in South Africa and abroad. The shorter 70km and 35km races will form part of the programme once again and are aimed at the junior and high school development teams. Tydens die Gereformeerde Kerk se jaarlikse skaapkopete op 13 Mei is ‘n nuwe skaap kopgeneraal en onder-skaapkopgeneraal vir die gemeente se Skaapkopgilde aangewys. Hierdie week, 25 jaar gelede in die

Zoutpansberger Hierdie week, 25 jaar gelede, was die hoofnuus in die Zoutpansberger van 16 Mei 1997 die Groter Louis Trichardt Oorgangsraad se goedkeuring van ‘n rekordbegroting van R94 miljoen. Dit het ingesluit ‘n bedryfsbegroting wat vir die eerste keer die R50 miljoen kerf verbyge steek het en ‘n kapitale begroting van dig by R34,5 miljoen. Tariewe sou met slegs 4% styg, terwyl R3 miljoen begroot is vir die herstel van Louis Trichardt se paaie. Wat die huidige Makhado Munisipaliteit se begroting vir die 2022/23 finansiële jare betref, het die bedryfsbegroting gegroei na ‘n ongelooflike R1 024 624 miljard en ‘n kapitale begroting van R430 023 miljoen. R3 miljoen gaan beslis nie meer genoeg wees om die dorp en streek se paaie te herstel nie! Die spreekwoord “boontjie kry sy loontjie” het daardie week ook weer betekenis gekry vir twee bakkiediewe. Mnr. Johannes du Plessis van Bergvlei Paneelkloppers het vertel hoe hy sy werksbakkie vir sy pa geleen het. Omstreeks 20:00 dieselfde dag het hy sy bakkie met twee onbekende mans daarin in Ris sikstraat opgemerk. Hy het die twee mans se aandag probeer trek, maar hulle het weggejaag. Du Plessis het besef dat die bakkie moontlik gesteel is en het die mans agter nagesit in die rigting van Elti villas. Een van die verdagtes het besluit hy wil nie meer die bakkie

steel nie en het uit die bewegende voertuig gespring. Die ander man het egter aanhou jaag, maar ook later besluit om te probeer weghardloop. Hy het remme aangeslaan en uitgespring. Du Plessis moes toe ook rem en uitswaai, en in die proses het hy booor die verdagte gery. Die man, ‘n 24jarige inwoner van Katlehong, is onder polisiebewaking in die hospitaal op Elim opgeneem. Ook nuus daardie week was wyle oom Hans (91) en tannie Barbara Uys (86) wat op 11 Mei van daardie jaar hulle 70ste huweliksherdenking gevier het. Die twee is in 1927 in Standerton getroud.

Training a life-changing experience for visually impaired children

The SPCA Louis Trichardt hosted their sixth annual SPCA Golf Day at the Soutpansberg Golf Club on Saturday, 14 May. “It was a great day once again, boasting yet another full field of players ... We are so incredibly humbled and thankful to each person who contrib uted in any way to help make our golf day such a huge success and one to look forward to on the yearly calendar. Without the amazing support of our community, it would not have been possible,” said the SPCA’s Alicia Thomas. One of the country’s Tokyo 2020 Paralympic silver and bronze medallists, Louzanne Coetzee, visited Louis Trich ardt the past weekend, cour tesy of the IsAbility Sports Club Limpopo. Louzanne is a visually impaired athlete (totally blind) and currently on the SASCOC commission as the SASCOC athletes’ representative. The purpose of her visit was to enhance awareness of the opportunities for visually impaired athletes, as well as able-bodied athletes who can train to become guide runners. Louzanne and her running guide Claus Kempen spent three days in the region visiting the Rivoni School for the Blind, the Tshilidzini Special School and Emmanuel Christian School for talks and presentations. Then, on Saturday, they held an amazing development session at Laerskool Louis Trichardt, which was attended by about 70 visually impaired children from, among others, Rivoni, Tshilidzini, Siloe School for the Blind, Setotolwane School and Bosele School for the Blind. “It is not often a school has a visit from three Paralympians in one shot. Claus was

the guide runner who ran for silver with Louzanne in the marathon in Tokyo,” said Sandy James of the IsAbility Sports Club. Also present the day was Sheryl James, Tokyo Paralympics bronze medallist. Several district athletics officials were also present at the sessions to appreciate Louzanne’s visit. “But the most wonderful part was the reception and enthusiasm of the children. Saturday was a life-changing experience for many of them. To find the courage to just throw caution to the wind and run as fast as the wind with a guide, even when you cannot see where you are going!” said Sandy.
