National Order for Dr Irene Mawela
By Elmon Tshikhudo
Veteran musician Dr Irene Mawela says her nomination for a National Order is the culmination of the musical journey she embarked on 66 years ago. Mawela is among a selected few who will be awarded National Orders from the Presidency of the Republic of South Africa during an investiture ceremony that is to be held on Friday, 28 April.
President Cyril Ramaphosa will bestow these awards on the deserving recipients in various categories. The National Orders are the highest awards South Africa bestows on its citizens and eminent foreign nationals who have contributed towards the advancement of democracy and have made a signif-
icant impact on improving the lives of South Africans.
Dr Mawela was nominated for The Order of Ikhamanga in Bronze for her outstanding contribution to the performing arts. “Her natural voice induces evocative emotions that have moved many local and international people,” said the Director-General in the Presidency, Phindile Baleni.
Irene Matodzi Mawela was first noticed by the late veteran producer Rupert Bopape while she was performing at a wedding in Moroka Central Soweto back in 1957. She has, among others, played with the Mahottela Queens and the Dark City Sisters. Her stage craft has kept her fans on their toes wherever she performed over decades.
As to how she felt about the award,
the artist remarked that she still could not believe it was happening in her lifetime. “I have so many awards from different organisations and the Department of Arts and Culture, but this one is by far the biggest and most esteemed award I have ever received. This one will be awarded by the President himself and it shows my efforts in the arts have not gone unnoticed. While we have been actively involved in spreading the gospel through our music, we never even knew that people in the highest offices were taking note of our contributions. I am so excited and cannot wait to take this award home. It will overshadow all the previous awards I have. I thank the government, especially the President, for honouring me in this way,” she said.
Mother (17) arrested for killing her 2-year-old son
By Maanda Bele
A teenage mother from Mphego village was arrested on Saturday, 15 April, for murdering her two-year-old son and then dumping his body into a pit toilet.
The police spokesperson in Limpopo, Lt Col Malesela Ledwaba, confirmed the
arrest. “A case of murder was opened by the Thohoyandou SAPS and is being investigated by the FCS (Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences unit), considering the sensitivity of the case and the fact that the Child Justice Act is kicking in because it involves minors,” said Ledwaba.
According to a reliable source who
refused to be named, the girl (now 17) got pregnant when she was just 14 years old and went on to live with the father of the child when her son was born. “Their relationship started to have problems and the girl went back home to her family.

Teenage mother arrested for killing her son (2)

During the March school holidays, she picked the child up (who was with the father) and took him home with her. When the school holidays were over, the little boy’s father wanted to know where the child was, and the girl told him the child was with her maternal grandmother. When the father went to the teenage mother’s family, however, he found that the child was not there. The girl then told him the child was with relatives in Gauteng. That’s when the boy’s father decided to call the police, and the girl started confessing. She told the police that she had killed her son on 18 March and threw his body into a pit toilet near a sand and brick hardware store at Mphego village,” the source said.
“It is rumoured that the girl is eight months pregnant by a new boyfriend, and that this boyfriend told her that he doesn’t want her with the child. That is why she decided to kill her son,” said our source.
A post on what is believed to be the teenage mother’s Facebook page, reads (translated from Tshivenda): I know you are all going to make jokes about it at school

A representative of the local SANCO branch, Mr Azwitamisi Masala, said the village was in shock. “We are ashamed, and this incident has stripped us of our dignity. We don’t know what to say or do, but we are all shocked that something like this could happen in our village. This is the first for us in this area. For now, we are trying to comfort the grieving family in every way we can,” Masala said.
Ms Messie Raphalalani, founder of Stop the Spot, an organisation that advocates for women and children’s rights, said the incident was heart-breaking and had caused immense pain and suffering for everyone involved.
“As an organisation dedicated to promoting the well-being and safety of all members of our community, we are deeply concerned about this incident and its underlying causes. We recognise that issues related to mental health, relationships, and parenting are complex and complicated, and require a comprehensive and compassionate response.
We urge all members of our community to come together to address this issue with empathy, compassion, and understanding. It is important to recognize that individuals who are struggling with mental health issues or facing difficult circumstances may feel isolated, ashamed and hopeless, and it is our duty to offer non-judgmental support and assistance,” she said.

One person died, while four others sustained serious to minor injuries when a 33-yearold man allegedly ran them over intentionally with his car at Khalavha village. The incident happened in the early hours of Sunday morning (16 April).
According to eyewitnesses, the suspect, identified as Phodzo Rausina, approached the five victims, who included the mother of his children, her new boyfriend, her friend and her friend’s boyfriend, and another male friend. The victims were walking home along the R523 Road, returning from a local shebeen, when Rausina approached them. He insisted on speaking with the mother of his children, but they ended up fighting. Seeing that
he was outnumbered, Rausina got back into his black BMW and drove straight up to them, running them over, then fleeing the scene. Later that same day, he handed himself over to the Siloam Police.
Limpopo police spokesperson Lt Col Malesela Ledwaba confirmed the incident and the death of one male. The police denied the rumour that had been circulating on social media that the suspect had first shot at one of the victims. According to the police, the suspect did not have a firearm on him.
Rausina appeared in the Thohoyandou Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 17 April, on a charge of murder and four counts of attempted murder. His case was postponed until 2 May for a formal bail application. He remains in custody.
More Nwanedi farmers charged with fraud
By Silas Nduvheni
Three more farmers from the Nwanedi area were arrested and appeared in the Polokwane Specialised Commercial Court on charges of fraud. This came after three senior officials from the Limpopo Department of Agriculture and four Nwanedi farmers were arrested at the beginning of March this year for allegedly defrauding the department of more than R2 million that had been set aside by the department to assist small-scale farmers who had been affected by the floods in the Vhembe District between 2013 and 2014.
According to W/O Lethunya Mmuroa, the spokesperson for the HAWKS in Limpopo, the Department of Agriculture set aside a budget to reimburse the affected farmers. “They were provided with an opportunity to submit their invoices/ claims to fix the damages on their farms. The processes unfolded and resulted in the department reimbursing the farmers, but some of the farmers colluded with officials from the department by submitting fraudulent claims/invoices.”
Mmuroa said the monies got paid without verification. They established that the officials would add fictitious names of subcontractors
to the department’s payroll who would be paid without following due processes. The funds would be paid to the farmers, who would then transfer the money to the subcontractors and the subcontractors would withdraw the money and pay the officials in cash.
The department’s forensic investigators discovered the shenanigans in 2020 and opened a case that was later referred to the Hawks’ Serious Commercial Crime Investigation Unit. The matter was investigated from 2020 until 27 January 2023, when the first seven suspects were summoned to appear before the Polokwane Specialised Commercial Court.

SANCO member believes “hitman” came to kill him
By Victor Mukwevho
The chairperson of SANCO at Makonde village, Mr Boshoto Ravhura, who is also a member of the Makonde Royal family, narrowly escaped an attempted assassination at his business last Wednesday evening (12 April).
Ravhura said he was standing next to the pool table when a suspicious vehicle stopped at his business premises. “We were surprised because it was [allegedly] the same car used by a certain vigilante group that has been terrorising Makonde villagers for the past three years. After some confrontations with members of the community, the local police intervened and the group was told to disband, but they continue to harass the community,” he said.
Ravhura claimed that, after a few minutes of sitting in the car, a man, whom they all know as one of the leaders of the notorious group of criminals, got out of the car, entered the business and walked past him, asking patrons who the owner of the business was. “They all said I was not around. He turned, walked past me again and went outside. Then he came back in with a firearm and started shooting randomly before driving away. He went to my house, parked the car at the gate, fired a few shots into the air and drove away. My kids had to run for cover and locked themselves in the house,” he said.
Family of Mme a Muofhe unhappy as SABC Livhu gets R50 000 bail
By Elmon Tshikhudo
The family members of the late Lindelani Nengovhela, better known as Mme a Muofhe, say that the R50 000 bail that was granted to her murder-accused husband, Livhuwani Madadzhe, is a slap in their faces.
The comedian and businessman, popularly known as SABC Livhu, was finally granted bail on Thursday, 13 April, when he again appeared in the Thohoyandou Magistrate’s Court. Madadzhe (38) stands accused of murdering his wife earlier this year, after her body was found in a trench at their home.
witnesses, whether he knows them or not, and to report at the Sandton Police Station on Mondays and Fridays, between 08:00 and 16:00 every week.
Advocate Hlungwani was also rebuked for his conduct outside the court.
In an interview with Limpopo Mirror, Ravhura said that he knew the suspect. “He doesn’t know me, but I know him very well, down to his full names. He is not even a resident of Makonde village.”
According to Ravhura, the incident occurred at about 18:00. He notified the police but said that they had only arrived after midnight that night and told him to open a case at the Thohoyandou Police Station, which Ravhura had done the following day (13 April). “After two days, a police van drove up at my business premises and the police officer gave me a letter that said I must report to the police station. The letter did not even have a police stamp on and the phone number on the letter is not working,” he said.
On Monday (17 April), the community leaders of Makonde accompanied Ravhura to the police station to inquire about the case. “A day after we complained at the police station (18 April), a police officer finally came to investigate the matter - a week after I was nearly killed,” he said.
Ravhura believes that the latest attack has its origin in the feud between the local SANCO members and the acting traditional leader at Makonde, Nyadzeni Ravhura.
SANCO members previously accused the traditional leader of employing a vigilante group to help protect him. In February this year, the acting chief’s shop was burnt down by angry residents. Three members of SANCO were ar-
rested afterwards and charged with assault to cause grievous bodily harm.
Responding to the allegations levelled against him, Mr Nyadzeni Ravhura said he was no longer a “deposed” traditional leader of Makonde. He said that after members of the Ravhura Royal House had asked the rightful owner of the throne to take over, they, along with members of SANCO Makonde, had all been summoned to the Tshivhase Royal House. “They were told that I will remain the acting traditional leader until the young traditional leader turns 25 years of age as he is still regarded as a minor. As we speak, I am not a deposed traditional leader anymore. I am the acting traditional leader of Makonde village,” he said.
He also rubbished allegations that he had influenced the police not to investigate the alleged attack on a SANCO member. “I opened a case against them [SANCO members] on 20 February, and they were arrested on 20 March - after a month.”
He said that the police’s investigating officer had visited him on Tuesday (18 April), looking for the telephone number of the suspect in connection with Boshoto Ravhura’s case. “I told him to look it up on the security company’s flyer, as I have no business with him (the suspect). I no longer have people guarding me because I fear nothing,” he said.
When asked why the staff of the security company, Tshiswole a tshi thabi, were often seen at his premises at Makonde, he said that the people seen there were members of a security company guarding his businesses. “I have many businesses, and there is a security company that is guarding all of them,” he said.
“To prove that I am still on the throne at the moment, I have been invited to attend a meeting for all traditional leaders under the Tshivhase Dynasty on Friday (21 April), and I will be there,” he said.
In the brief appearance that lasted less than an hour, Madadzhe was represented by another attorney, Mr Maanda Magadze, as the legal representative who had previously argued his case, Advocate Ntsako Hlungwani, had to attend to another matter enrolled in the High Court. Conspicuous by their absence also were the large crowds that used to gather and march during his previous appearances.
The R50 000 bail has conditions attached. Madadzhe was instructed to relocate from his home at Mangondi Sidou to an address in Gauteng. He was further instructed not to interfere with any
Speaking outside the court after bail was granted to Madadzhe, the late Mia Muofhe’s aunt, Ms Elsie Nengovhela, said the court’s decision to grant him bail had brought the family profound sadness and revived their grief. “It seems like only yesterday that we buried our loved one, and already the man who [allegedly] killed her is roaming the streets. This is a very sad day for us as a family. We had hoped that he would be kept in custody until the
case is finalised. We do not feel safe now that he is out. We are deeply disappointed that he has been granted bail,” she said. Nengovhela also took a swipe at the police and blamed them for not doing their job properly. In granting bail, Magistrate Mukoma Maiwashe pointed out that the case was brought to court prematurely.
“We are not at all happy with the way the case is being handled. The family has information that could help in the investigations, but the police seem not to be interested in it.
If it continues like this, the case will collapse and the killer will walk free,” said Nengovhela.
The case was postponed to 30 May for further investigations.

Five months down the line and R1 billion project to fix N1 north yet to kick off
By Andries van Zyl
“The stench is killing us”
By Bernard Chiguvare
Residents living near Makushu Primary School and the parents whose children attend the school are pleading with the Vhembe District Municipality (VDM) to fix the sewer system that has been overflowing for the past three months.
The house of Ms Magdalena Mokone (84) is situated less than five metres from the sewer, and she says she hardly ever opens her windows or sits outside because of the foul smell. “I am an asthma patient, and this affects me very much. I am no longer enjoying my stay here, yet this is my only home. I remember the municipality came out early in January, but they did not fix the sewer. I am worried about the children who sometimes play in this smelly sewage,” she says.
Magdalena is also pleading with Musina Local Municipality to close the footpath near her home, which residents are using to dump rubbish. “The smell that comes from this rubbish dump also affects me very much. The municipality must come and collect the rubbish and close the footpath,” she said.
On visiting Makushu Primary, we saw several ladies busy preparing food for the learners, but they were also not happy with the constant smell of sewage flowing less than two metres from the kitchen area.
“These learners are our children, and we feel this is a very unhealthy situation. The sewer should be fixed as a matter of urgency. This also affects us while we are busy preparing their food, as it exposes us to unhealthy working conditions,” said one of the ladies.
Mr Peter Jack, chairperson of Musina To The Front (MTTF), one of the local community structures, told Limpopo Mirror that the parents and residents had been complaining about the sewage for a long time, but that the VDM did not bother to come out to fix it. “This is a health hazard. Learners cannot stop attending school because of this. We are urging the VDM to attend to the problem before we sit with an outbreak of disease at the school,” said Jack.
This is not the first time the Musina residents have appealed to the VDM to fix sewage spillage in the Musina township. Last year, the residents went on a week-long strike to demand, among other things, an end to the problem of persistent sewage spills in the townships.
VDM spokesperson
Mr Matodzi Ralushai said they were aware of the sewer challenges and that the VDM’s technical team would be on site by Wednesday (19 April) to fix the overflowing sewerage.
The more observant of our local motorists have noticed by now that nothing has come of the announcement by the South-African National Road Agency (SANRAL) last year that it would be “fixing” the N1 north between Louis Trichardt and Musina at an estimated cost of just over R1 billion. SANRAL’s announcement came in response to a public outcry about the deplorable state of this section of the national highway at that time, especially regarding potholes.
In our 28 October 2022 edition, the newspaper wrote about one of these complainants, Mr Jaco Lyon of Mopane. He actually went out and counted the number of potholes on a 13-kilometre stretch of the N1 between Bokmakierie and the Riverside Nursery. In total, Lyon counted 583 potholes in this section of the road. The newspaper’s interest in the story was triggered by a number of environmental-impact-assessment (EIA) notices on fences and farm gates along this section of road. The notice was for the proposed upgrading
of the “SANRAL SOC LTD National Road 1 (N1) Section 29, from Masekwaspoort (Km 27.80) to Musina (Km 70), Limpopo Province”. According to the notices, the project will entail the general upgrading of the 42.2 km-long road section, including six major intersections, a number of farm accesses, three road bridges and seven major culverts located along the route. The object of the notice was to invite the public to register as interested or affected parties as the project will include upgrades and associated mining activities, seeing that the material for the project will be sourced from seven borrow pits, encompassing an area of up to 125ha located along the road.
Asked when the project was scheduled to commence, Mr Madoda Mthembu (SANRAL Northern Region’s operations and maintenance manager) stated at the time that the tender advert for the construction project would go out in November last year.
Almost six months later, the newspaper again approached SANRAL to find out what had happened to the project.
In response, Mr Mthembu stated on
Tuesday that the project was still on track, although delayed. “The tender advert has not been published yet, due to delays in finalising the environmental processes and approvals,” said Mthembu, adding that the tender document was almost ready. “SANRAL will communicate when the tender advert will be published,” said Mthembu.
As for the current state of the N1, SANRAL was also asked if they were experiencing a backlog in maintenance. “The daily Routine Road Maintenance (RRM) will continue to keep the road safe up until the rehabilitation contractor is appointed,” said Mthembu.
In the meantime, many hope that the appointment of the contractor will happen sooner rather than later as this section of the N1, which is not a dual carriageway like the N1 south of Polokwane, is taking a daily pounding from heavy national and international traffic. According to SANRAL’s own statistics, approximately 3 480 vehicles travel on this section of the N1 between Louis Trichardt and Musina daily, of which heavy vehicles constitute 35%.

Protesters demand transparency on hospital project
By Bernard Chiguvare

A report by online publisher Groundup last year showed how dilapidated and unsafe the hospital’s building structures had become.

This after former President Jacob Zuma had launched a project by the National Health Department in 2014 to build a new hospital in Siloam. Construction of the R1.5 billion hospital project only began in June last year (2022) and is expected to be completed by July 2028.
The communities around Siloam, however, have several concerns around the project. Their demands include their being informed about the tenders offered to subcontractors. They want to know who the subcontractors are and how the tenders were offered. According to the concerned group, an agreement was reached before construction started that general labourers would be recruited from the villages
through SANCO (South African National Civic Organisation), which the protesters claim was not done. They also wanted to know how many general labourers have been employed on the project.
The concerned group further wants to know what criteria were used for appointing the community liaison officer (CLO) for the project, and who the panel members were who had appointed the CLO.
According to the concerned group, the project is expected to have a 30% local benefit. They demanded to know who the beneficiaries were and how the 30% was being distributed.
With their list of demands, the group members insisted that no interference be allowed from Cllr Khuliso Mukheli and other ANC comrades at the construction work site.
Responding to Limpopo Mirror’s media enquiry, the CLO for the project, Rendani Ravele, said: “We only received the memorandum yesterday, so we are still looking into the matters raised by the concerned group. We will respond to the concerned group within the seven days.”

Musina Municipality launches its LED Forum
Musina News
In preparation for the full implementation the Musina Makhado Special Economic Zone (MMSEZ), the Musina Local Municipality launched its Local Economic Development (LED) Forum last Thursday (13 April).
The launch, which took place at the municipal council chambers, was attended by representatives from various business entities in the Musina municipal area.
Mayor’s late wife will be remembered fondly
By Kaizer Nengovhela
Julia Munyai (48), the late wife of Makhado Municipality’s mayor, Samuel Munyai, was described as a loving, friendly and hardworking woman whose contributions towards the development of her community would forever be remembered. Munyai died at her home in Tshakhuma on 8 April after a long sickbed and was buried at the Tshakhuma Cemetery last Saturday (15 April).
Munyai, who had worked at the Vhembe District Municipality’s Facilities Department for the past seven years, was fondly remembered by every-

one who knew her. The funeral service was attended by members of the national parliament, led by the Minister in the Presidency, Khumbudzo Ntshavheni, ANC members, workers, friends and family members.
Addressing the mourners during the service, Minister Khumbudzo Ntshavheni said that losing an employee of Munyai’s calibre was sad. “Her departure is a great loss to both the family, the community and to us as her employers. We have lost a dedicated official who was truly committed to her duties. To the family, we know that it is very painful to lose a loved one and we will give you some space to
grieve. Grieving will ease your pain, although it will take time to heal from this painful tragedy,” said Ntshavheni.
Mayor Munyai thanked the government, municipality and community for their support in their hour of mourning. “Although we are mourning, we are thankful for your support. We have seen you assisting the family from the first day our loved one passed on. This clearly demonstrates that you are full of love, care and responsibility. We don’t have enough words to thank everyone who has been with us in this difficult time,” he said.
When addressing guests during the event, Musina Mayor Nkhanedzeni Mawela said local businesses should be ready for the roll-out of the MMSEZ, which is now a reality. “We are happy that you decided to put everything aside to come and attend this important initiative. We want you to participate, rather than to be spectators in this massive economic development initiative here in Musina. However, we can only achieve this if we are organised into a legit structure like what we
are doing here today.”
Mawela said the LED Forum would also provide advice and recommendations to the municipal council on matters to be considered towards the promotion of LED initiatives around Musina. “Besides the launch here today, this forum should be able to build a sustainable local economy through robust economic development programmes that focus on empowerment of local businesses. This is where all local businesses should come under one roof and share best practices to grow their individual businesses.”
One of the local businesspeople who attended the launch was Mr Rembuluwani Isaac Raedani. He said: “We are happy that, as local businesspeople, we will have a platform where we will be able to share best practices and resolve our challenges as a unified structure. We thank the local municipality for creating this platform because it will provide many benefits for us as local entrepreneurs.”

Last respects paid to late Bishop Ramulifho
By Victor Mukwevho
More than 2000 worshippers from all around South Africa attended the memorial service of world-renowned man of God Dr Bishop Avhurengwi Ramulifho, who was laid to rest at Khubvi Cemetery last Saturday morning (15th). Among the mourners were prominent lawyers, traditional leaders, bishops and doctors from all over the country.
During the memorial service, which was held at the Living Waters Christian International Church the day before (Friday), Ramulifho’s youngest son, Gundo Ramulifho, described his father as a very dedicated and committed man of God. “Blessed by God, my parents were married for 44 years. Now my father has left us [to be] with God, but with Him on our side, we will continue being a family that lives under the guidance of the mighty Lord,” he said.
The late bishop’s wife, Ms Norah Tshilidzi Ramulifho, told the mourners how she had met her late husband back in 1972, when they had been introduced to each other by the late Ms Ragimana while visiting her friend at the Apostolic Faith Mission Church. “Mrs Ragimana arranged everything and the rest, as they say, is history. I was already a Christian by then, but my husband taught me how to read and understand the Bible better. He showed me love from day one, until he left us,” she said. Ramulifho was born in Muhuyu village in 1945. When he became a bornagain Christian, he attended the Central Bible College in Mabopane between
1973 and 1974. After graduating, he taught the Gospel at many places - even on the trains at Johannesburg Station. He eventually married his wife in 1979 and started his own church, called The Apostolic Unity Church, at Khubvi village in 1983. He was ordained as Bishop in 1992 and was later nominated as the Director of the Bible League in Africa, through which he visited most of the African countries and Europe, encouraging people to accept God as their Saviour. He was also a well-known farmer, and worked as a freelance preacher for Radio Venda, where he hosted a programme called Fhasi ha

Local SMMEs display their ware at Rand Easter Show
By Victor Mukwevho
The Thulamela Local Municipality, in partnership with the Vhembe District Municipality (VDM), purchased exhibition space for nine small, medium, and micro enterprises (SMME) from the Vhembe District to showcase their crafted products, produce and services at this year’s Rand Easter Show, held at the Johannesburg Expo Centre in Nasrec from 6-10 April.
The annual Rand Show is not only South Africa’s longest-standing and largest consumer exhibition, but also an excellent platform for businesses to present their brands effectively to an audience of tens of thousands.
The managing director and owner of Laranatha Herbal Tea,
Mr Divhani Dagada, thanked the government and the Rand Show for giving them this level of exposure.
“Thank you, Rand Show, for the opportunity to showcase our products. We met some really amazing people here who will forever leave a mark on our businesses.”
He also thanked each and every customer who supported them in buying their products. “One of the quickest and most engaging ways to get a brand in front of thousands of people is at an expo,” he said.
The VDM’s MMC for planning and development, Cllr Rose Mathukha, encouraged the district’s youth to start their own businesses in order to fight poverty. “The government and the private sector are there to fund businesses. Young people must take advantage of these funds in starting their businesses,” she said.
Former radio guru, Dryskin Sono, laid to rest
By Kaizer Nengovhela
Thousands of mourners from around the province attended the funeral service of the former radio guru, Dryskin “Mukumba Thipetwi” Sono (76), which was held at the Waterval Evangelical Lutheran Church of South Africa (ELCSA) on Saturday, 15 April. Sono passed away at his home in Waterval on 11 April, following a short illness.
Mourners burst into laughter as speaker after speaker remembered how Sono had lived. Mr Mpho “Juntiby” Nefale, veteran radio presenter and former colleague of Sono at Phalaphala FM, said Sono had been a remarkable presenter, who could capture ordinary things in an unusual manner. “Sono did his work diligently and not for the love of monetary rewards. It is rare to find people of Sono’s calibre with such a work passion,” he said.
Nefale said that the family and community members around Limpopo were still shocked about Sono’s death.
“We are greatly saddened about Sono’s untimely death. Our province has been robbed of a committed and hard worker and we shall miss him. He played a vital role in the development of the radio industry by grooming young presenters. He was an icon of hope, a role model and a true leader who displayed distinguished leadership skills in his society.”
Pastor Stanley Mabuza of ELCSA urged the church’s members to emulate the good example set by the late Sono. “We worked together for a long time, and I can testify that Sono was a selfless and trusted senior member of the church who worked tirelessly for God. He always spoke his mind when things were not going well in the church,” he said.
Mr Themba Sono, one of the
deceased’s sons, said the family had suffered a great loss with the death of their father. “It is painful to lose someone so precious to us, but we thank God, because He does everything for a reason,” he said.

Rabelani Madula, better known as DJ Rabs Vhafuwi from the remote village of Dzimauli Mukondeni, released his next long-awaited single Honest in March this year, on which he had teamed up with fellow artists P. Postman, Kaylow and Aliekeys.
Rabs Vhafuwi, who is a skilful producer and DJ, broke into the music industry about 10 years ago with the release of his nationwide hit, Count Your Blessings, which became the title track for his Count Your Blessings album. Since then, he has released countless other hits such as Daddy was my hero, I’ll be there, Corona, and Tsholitshedza, to mention but a few. His first single, Fundudzi, was released in 2012 and featured his mother, Sarah Madula, on vocals. About working on his latest project,
Rabs Vhafuwi said: “I have always wanted to work with P. Postman, Kaylow and Aliekeys. It’s been a decade since I produced the Count Your Blessing album, and this is another milestone for me. I hope the single will be a classic, like the album was.
I am just giving the people what they want, because the industry is now vested in different genres from what I normally produce. To package this EP took me a bit of time because I was traveling overseas. Between coming back and working in the studio, it took me about three weeks to package it. Soon, I will be shooting
the music video as well.”
New single from Rabs Vhafuwi Wisani Mbedzi turns his setback into artistic success
He says that whatever he records, comes from within and that he does not like to go with the flow. “My music comes from the heart. I have loyal fans, and I make sure that I keep them happy. I will be going on many tours with ten remixes from ten different DJs. Five of them are known DJs, and five unknown DJs,” he said.
Rabs Vhafuwi holds a B-Tech degree in production management from the Vaal University of Technology and a national diploma in foundations management from the Gordon Institute of Business Science.

Wisani Mbedzi did not achieve the results he had hoped for when he completed his matric a few years ago, but instead of giving up, he managed to transform his frustration into artistic triumph. The 27-year-old versatile artist from Bungeni started to utilise his creative skills as a sculptor and painter, and today he makes a living from these endeavours.
From an early age, Wisani participated in various cultural events and often won first place in competitions. When he matriculated from Russel Bungeni High School in 2017, he attempted several times - with the assistance of his principal - to obtain the results he needed to further his studies in art, but to no avail. This situation forced him to dedicate himself to the practical side
of his craft instead, and his fellow villagers soon began to praise his work.
When sculpting, Wisani incorporates unconventional materials such as steel wire, empty egg cartons, green soap bars and water into his artwork. For wall decor, he uses enamel paints, and fabric paints in different colours for T-shirts and canvasses.
For Wisani, art is not just an expression of his creative skills and imagination, but also allows him to make social statements.
“I’m grateful for the support I receive from my
clients, but I still hope to enrol in an art programme at a university or college to further my studies. I hope my situation can serve as an inspiration to aspiring artists to never give up on their dreams, no matter how long it may take. In future, I would very much like to have my own art gallery where I can showcase all my creations, and help young artists realise their talents,” he said. For more information on Wisani’s artwork, call him on 076 060 0628.

Recognition for writer

Local writer Sydwell Mthombeni won the trophy for Best Teacher at the two-day webinar organised by Cremase Speaking School in Nigeria. The 34-yearold Mthombeni from Bungeni was one of the guest speakers from South Africa, along with others from Zambia and Cameroon.
The theme of the webinar was “The Voice of African Writers,” and Mthombeni talked about how writing can shape people and nations. The main aim was to encourage young and upcoming writers not to give up on writing, but to let their voices speak to people through writing.
Students in attendance voted for Mthombeni, who expressed his joy and gratitude for the incredible achievement.
“It feels good to be recognised internationally, and it shows how much impact you can add to the world through the use or value
of writing. I would like to thank the organiser, Jomoke Amost, for choosing me to be part of this among millions of other writers and speakers in Africa,” he said.
Mthombeni attributed his success to smart work and networking locally and internationally, reading books, constantly writing, and learning more. “So, to those who aspire to write, they should continue to connect with other valuable writers. This will help in sharing knowledge and skills that inspire smart writing,” he said. He wants to continue to inspire others, especially young upcoming writers. “I would encourage writers to let their voices speak through their pens, writing what the world lacks, as their voice is essential to the universe,” he said.
Mthombeni has published two books and is currently working on publishing a book called The Voice of African Writers in June, along with his co-writers.

Famous musician Robert Mudau has released his third album, titled Magondoni (loosely translated as On Our Roads), which is focused on the spate of fatal accidents on our roads of late. Through his music, the artist appeals to motorists to be more observant and considerate when driving to prevent road carnage. Hailing from Mapate village near Thohoyandou, Mudau is a talented bass guitarist and singer who has already enjoyed ample airplay on both regional and national radio. A marketing, computer science and logistics graduate, he started his music career with the Scavengers Band in 1997 and went solo when the Scavengers disbanded.
His music is a mixture of maskandi, mbaqanga and traditional Tshivenda, and all his lyrics are sung in his mother tongue, Tshivenda. He believes that singing in one’s own language helps to preserve the mother tongue and tradition.
“When you sing in a language that people understand, you speak to them directly because they know what you are talking about. This means that your message will get straight to your target audience without the need to translate,” he said.
His first album, Masindi, was released in 2018 and earned him high regard in local music circles. In August 2020, he produced yet another hit album, titled Founu yanu His latest offering, Magondoni, released on 1 April this year, contains four tracks, namely Litshani u vhulaya, Ni so ngo tuwa, Ndo , and Magondoni (title track), with Mudau himself on lead vocals. In making the album, he worked with highly experienced artists such as Maqhude Mkhize, Khehla Nkosi, Amos Manganye, Zama Jiyane and Mbuyiselwa Ngubane. Ntsako’s books demonstrate his love of Xitsonga
By Thembi Siaga
With a passion for storytelling and a desire to preserve the Xitsonga language, Ntsako Manganyi from Mbokota village released two novels by the name of Mihloti Ya Queen Elizabeth and Rhengu, as well as an anthology of verse, titled Mbuti Ya Mavendze, recently.
The books, published by the Writers Corner Institute and Reaching Destinies Enterprises, cover various aspects of life, such as the difficulties encountered by people from different age groups.
“My books serve to educate readers on the significance of mutual support and motivation and guide them towards a righteous path. My goal is to change people’s perspective

Pfuluwani will forthwith produce the Vhandilani show, hosted by Terry “The Big Dude” Mudau, from Mondays to Fridays, 06:00 to 09:00, while Sikhwivhilu will take over the Dzia Orowa show.
Pfuluwani grew up in Lwamondo Tshifulanani Ha-Gelebe. He started his educational journey at Maphuphe Primary School, proceeded to Matshele Primary School, and completed high school at Luvhaivhai Secondary School in 2005.
Pfuluwani holds a BA degree in media and communication studies, which he obtained from the University of Limpopo. In 2009, he pursued his postgraduate studies at the University of Pretoria and gained experience in supervision, budget planning, marketing, monitoring and evaluation, scheduling of programmes and the allocation of broadcasters.

Ntsako said his first book, Mihloti Ya Queen Elizabeth, took him three years to write, while Rhengu took less than a month to pen down. He worked with four local poets by the names of Fanelo Ngobeni, Engetelo Tshabalala, Ndzalama, and Kabelo Makhubele to compile his anthology of verse, which took them two months to complete.
Mbuti Ya Mavendze contains numerous Xitsonga proverbs and idioms. According to Fanelo Ngobeni, one of the poets who feature in Ntsako’s anthology, readers will be reminded of long-forgotten beliefs and taboos of the Xitsonga-speaking people.

Ramantswana was born in the village of Luvhalani and went to Malema Primary School and George Mbulaheni Secondary School. He studied journalism in England. During his 10-year stay in the UK, Ramantswana worked as a freelance journalist for various UK-based online/print magazines and newspapers. Having discovered his passion for writing through reads by his favourite author, Isaac Shabangu, Ntsako aspires to start his own publishing company one day to support other writers who are still finding their footing in the world of literature.

Ramantswana also studied drama while in Norwich. During this time, he was approached by the BBC’s Voice Norwich to shoot a short documentary about his ‘identity’. This documentary made it to the top 10, out of more than 150 documentaries submitted.
Since his return to South Africa in 2013, Ramantswana has featured in several TV adverts.
In 2017, he also joined the cast of a popular SABC 2 soapie, Muvhango, playing the character of Matodzi.
Ramantswana’s new book has two parts: a family history and a family tree. “Our family ancestors originated from Botswana and settled in Venda in the mid-1800s. This book highlights their journey, the role they played during multiple wars that happened in Venda as well as South Africa”.
The book documents six generations and almost 1 000 family members are identified, excluding

those that could not be verified or found. The author said that when attending family gatherings such as funerals, stokvels, weddings, etc. “I often hear family history from our elders that we, as younger generations, are not aware of. Unfortunately, these stories end there. I decided to follow up and document my family’s history, so that I can encourage other families to do the same,” he said.
“Most importantly, our next generations will be able to trace and reference their identity – a big problem in our society. Every family has a history; every family has
a family tree. As much as we are encouraging Africa to tell its own stories in different ways, documenting our family history is just as important”.
“I believe that a positive frame of mind gets you further in life. In radio, you work 24 hours a day. Wherever you are, you are on duty, because if something happens related to the news, you need to report it. I always make sure that I do my homework by researching topics in order to excel in my duties. I find radio work to be very interesting and challenging,” he said. Pfuluwani wants to empower the youth, so that they do well in business. “I love young people who have a clear vision of what they want, regardless of where they come from.”
He ascribes his success and achievements to hard work and striving for the best in a career that demands discipline and determination. He also believes that knowing God is important. “Follow your heart and go to church regularly,” he said.
He urges young people to refrain from acts of criminality and focus on their schoolwork. “Pupils need to be given moral education that encourages them to stay away from wrongdoing. It is important for elders and teachers to tell the children about the dangers of involving themselves in crime,” he said.

Vhembe signs historic Twinning Agreement with Beitbridge Council
By Silas Nduvheni
The executive mayor of the Vhembe District Municipality (VDM), Dowelani Nenguda, and the executive mayor of the Beitbridge Rural District Council in Zimbabwe, Luka Ndou, both signed a memorandum of understanding
(MOU) at the Mapungubwe Heritage Site’s Museum Hall on Friday, 14 April, wherein they promise to promote viable economic development. This important occasion was also attended by traditional leaders and councillors from both municipalities.
Nenguda warmly welcomed Ndou, Chief David Tshitaudze and the rest of the delegates from the Beitbridge Rural District Council and said that a programme of action from both municipalities would be created to start implementing work in areas such as exhibition, trading, and exchange programmes for students from the University of Venda (Univen) and the University of Zimbabwe.
“Today, we are here to witness a historic event in the recent history of our northern region - a twinning agreement between the Vhembe District and our Zimbabwean counterpart, the Beitbridge Rural District Council. This partnership/agreement is not only between the two local councils but goes beyond. It speaks to the international relations between our two countries: the Republic of South Africa and the Republic of Zimbabwe. This MOU is going to affect different areas of our economic sectors in our two regions, and I can say today that the Musina-Makhado Special Economic Zone (MMSEZ) is already in full swing. [The] SEZ is going to be the economic hub of our region, and this MOU will pave a way for the proper implementation of this megaproject, for the development of our economy,” Nenguda said.
Ndou in turn said he was very excited to be visiting the Vhembe District and about signing the twinning agreement, adding that now the two countries would be able to trade things that were not produced in Zimbabwe but could be found in the Vhembe District, and vice versa.
The project manager, Mr Freedom Giliana, said Vhembe needed young entrepreneurs, not only to survive but to thrive to boost the region’s economy for the better for everyone.
The mixed-farming course
included theoretical and practical lessons, including business planning, costing, the viability of agri-business and the dynamics in an agricultural marketing environment.
“These young graduates are a sign of hope for the future of agriculture in Vhembe. We cannot overstress how important it is for Limpopo’s economy, food security and socio-political stability that young people create their own jobs in their own hometowns and regions,” said Giliana.
Vhamusanda Vho-Livhuwani Matsila, the chairperson of Livhuwani Matsila & Associates, said lots of possibilities for agroprocessing. “Vhembe is one of the most fertile regions in Limpopo. If there is the will to do so in society and if good business and agricultural practises are applied, it can yield a lot of food-related businesses
and income for the people of Limpopo. We are looking for people who are serious about business and farming. We are continuously trying to connect them with tribal councils and appropriate government structures to acquire land and agricultural support structures to farm. There is a lot of good agricultural land in the Vhembe area. Even one hectare can go a long way to help the young people of Vhembe to get off the ground and prosper,” said Matsila.
One of young farmers, Ms Hloniphani Myambo, is already into small-scale farming and is confident that she will benefit from the course. “At the moment, I am farming from home but only on a small scale. I am sure this system of farming will allow me to produce throughout the whole year,” she said.
Dress for success with natural wool, reckons local fashion designer
By Elmon Tshikhudo
Local fashion designer Nkhangweleni Carol Ratshidaho met Ms Itani Mudau, a crocheter from Muledane, quite by chance at a business awareness workshop in September 2020. The 45-year-old Ratshidaho, from Ha Budeli outside Thohoyandou, immediately fell in love with what Mudau was doing and decided to learn the art of crocheting too.
Over time, more women doing crocheting
showed her what to do, and soon she found the hang of it. Now she has come up with a woollen clothing range, which she believes is easier to maintain with the current tough load shedding schedule than any other fabric.
Ratshidaho says she started crocheting for herself, but no sooner had she begun than her unique wool designs caught the attention of clients who wanted to know where she had got the designs from. “This was when I realised there was a need for woollen clothing. A business opportunity presented itself, and I had to explore it,” she said.
One thing led to another, and the popularity of her wool clothing kept growing. Before long, she had such a large clientele that she started her own label, called CJ Boutique, and also opened her own business, called CarolJ BeautyWorld, which is based in Sibasa. The business is doing very well today and specialises in all types of fashion wear, from dresses and scarfs to kiddies wear and handbags, to name but a few.
“Even though starting up was a bit of a challenge, I am overcoming it as more people are falling for the woollen fashion. I am able to create something that’s more attractive and stylish – a new trend. For now, my target includes everybody, but especially ladies because I want to make stylish clothes for both winter and summer, as well as woollen wedding dresses that can be maintained cheaply. They need no ironing or dry cleaning and fit people from all classes. With load shedding still to be with us for a long time, woollen clothing is the way to go. I am also ready to teach young women the ropes, and that is my humble contribution to my community,” said Ratshidaho.

Univen launches Safety Programme on campus
By Silas Nduvheni
The managing director of the Campuses and Schools Safety Training Institute (CASSTI), Mr Stephen Ngobeni, has urged students at institutions of higher learning such as universities and TVET Colleges to get more involved in the fight against gender-based violence (GBV) and be pioneers for the cause.
“We want students to collect the statistics of GBV cases and relate it to the university and the police to help those who are hiding to come out and report GBV cases. Students should be getting involved in issues affecting them and be pioneers of GBV tolerance and encourage others to do their part,” said Ngobeni.
Ngobeni was speaking during the launch of the Campus Community Safety Programme,
held at Univen’s Faculty of Education Hall on Thursday, 13 April. The programme forms part of the SAPS’s communityand campus-centred policing, which aims to create a crimefree environment conducive for learning.
Univen’s vice-chancellor and principal, Dr Bernard Nthambeleni, said they were excited to host this important initiative to launch the programme along with the South African Police Service, Campus and School Safety Training Institute, Vhembe TVET College, and communities surrounding the respective institutions.
Nthambeleni said that, in September 2019, the Minister of Justice and Correctional Services, Ronald Lamola, had visited the Univen campus after the official opening of the Sexual Offences Court in Thohoyandou.
“During his visit, he informed us that the greater Vhembe District Municipality has recorded the highest increase of incidents of gender-based violence in the entire Limpopo Province, with more than 13 000 cases reported in the form of murder, domestic violence, sexual violence, rape and assault. This was very disturbing news to hear because, as the University of Venda, we form part of this community, and this community is a part of us. The bad image of Vhembe’s community is also a bad reflection on us. The University of Venda is a community that consists of over 16 000 students and 994 staff members. We are not insulated from the problems and challenges that affect our societies. We are part of these communities, and what happens to them has a direct impact on us,” he said.

Notice is hereby given in terms of Regulation 41(2) published in Government Notice No R 326 under chapter 5 of the National Environmental Management Act (No. 107 of 1998) of the intent to submit an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) application to the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy (DMRE) in respect of the above proposed development by Musina-Makhado Special Economic Zone (MMSEZ) SOC.
The MMSEZ SOC intends to install bulk infrastructure, towards the development of their North Site of the Special Economic Zone in Antonvilla near Musina. The MMSEZ SOC applied for and obtained Environmental Authorisation to install the required bulk infrastructure that include water, wastewater, electricity, roads and stormwater, and integrated security infrastructure in 2022. The MMSEZ SOC now requires to establish access road into their North Site in Antonvilla near Musina, within the Musina Local Municipality in Vhembe District of Limpopo Province, so as to start activating this North Site of the MMSEZ. Internal roads also require to be built or upgraded. The proposed road construction and upgrade processes require gravel material for infilling purposes. Thus, MMSEZ SOC is proposing to establish a borrow-pit at Antonvilla 7 MT farm.
The GPS coordinates at the central point of the proposed development site are as follows: 22o18’51.7”S; 30o4’17.24”E.
The proposed development will trigger the following activities in Listing Notices 1 and 3 that require authorisation:
• Listing Notice 1 (GNR 327), Activity 21;
• Listing Notice 1 (GNR 327), Activity 27;
• Listing Notice 3 (GNR 324), Activity 12.
Application for Environmental Authorisation for the proposed development will follow the Basic Assessment Process, as outlined in the EIA Regulation 326 of 2014, as amended.
Lambeu Consulting & Training Services (Pty) Ltd has been appointed as an Independent Environmental Assessment Practitioner (EAP) by MMSEZ SOC to facilitate the public participation process and the entire Environmental Authorisation process for the proposed development.
The Basic Assessment Report will be available for review for the period of 30 days from the date of this Notice. In order to be identified as an Interested and Affected Party (I&AP), who will be afforded access to all project documents and opportunities to comment on them, please submit your name, contact information and interest in the project, in writing, to the contact person given below:

Vho-
Vhamusanda
Makhado Vhathundimapfura Sinthumule’s mother, Ms Ellen Sinthumule (62), passed away at her home in Makwarela on 16 April after a long illness.
Vhamusanda Vho-Makhado Sinthumule described his mother as an angel who had brought her children up with a lot of love and affection. “The passing of our beloved mother has left a big void in the family. She was everything to us, and she was our main source of inspiration. She was a visionary and a good leader who loved all people without discriminating or taking sides. For me, she was like a friend and not a mother, because we shared ideas,” he said fondly.
“The hearts of the whole community and traditional council are heavy. My mother had played an influential role in the church as well as the community. We will always remember her for her hard work, commitment and dedication.”
He urged everyone to follow the good example set by Ellen. “It becomes very painful when we lose icons like her, but we wipe our tears because we know that she served the Lord every minute of her life.”
Vhakoma Vho-Daniel Mavhandu said the Tshiozwi community and the whole of Limpopo had lost an important figure. “She was a beacon of hope to many people in the community. Her contributions in the development of our community will never be forgotten. She is a true hero in our eyes,” he said.
Ellen will be buried on Saturday, 22 April. The funeral service starts in Makwarela at 06:00 and will proceed to Tshiozwi Cemetery from there.
Fhatuwani is ready for Comrades
By Victor Mukwevho
Marathon runner Fhatuwani
Mudau from Khubvi village says he is ready to compete at this year’s Comrades Ultra-marathon.
People from around the globe will be flocking to KwaZulu-Natal to participate in the world’s most renowned ultra-marathon, which takes place on Sunday, 11 June.
Mudau was spotted running along the Thohoyandou Road towards Tshilamba on Human Rights Day on Tuesday (21 March). When Limpopo Mirror caught up with him, he was looking fighting fit for the approximately 90 km challenge ahead. “I started training for the marathon in early January this year. I have already covered more than 2 019 kilometres since I started preparing, and I feel I am now ready to participate in the Comrades,” he said.
Mudau was born in Soshanguve, Pretoria, but relocated to Khubvi village when he was 16 years old. During his school days at Silemale Secondary, he participated in the 100- and 200-metre races. He was nicknamed “Carl Lewis” as people compared him to the legendary American sprinter. Later he tried his luck in marathons and was eventually snatched up by the Maize Meal Phosphate Club, based in Phalaborwa, and stayed with them for five years. “They provided us with groceries to the value of R3 000 every month. For the five years I was with the club, I never bought my own groceries,” he said.
Mudau gave special thanks to Skipper Muhanelwa Randima for encouraging and sponsoring him for the last three years. “Skipper Randima is the reason why I am still running today. May the Lord bless him in everything he does in his life,” he said.

Polokwane Wolves win provincial wheelchair basketball tournament
By Victor Mukwevho
The Polokwane Wolves won the Provincial Club Wheelchair Basketball Championship after thrashing the
Vhembe 12 Eagles 14-0 in the final, played at the Thohoyandou Indoor Sports Centre on Saturday, 15 April.
Led by their experienced captain, Bethuel Sekgwele, the Wolves scored their first two goals within the first six minutes of the game, making clear from the onset that the two teams were not in the same league.
The visiting team controlled their wheelchairs comfortably, moving around easily, while most of the local boys seemed to struggle a lot in balancing their wheelchairs while in motion.
Hulisani Sivhaga, who was named best player of the day for the Eagles team, was a stalwart at the back and in the middle, but the two
Munyamela brothers, Ondwela and Bethuel, were unsuccessful in their attempts to throw the ball into the net.
The Polokwane Wolves’ ladies team also won their division, beating the Rhinos Ladies 10-0.
Speaking to team captain Bethuel Sekgwele after the games, he said that both their men’s and women’s teams were obviously superior. “They [the local teams] are definitely not in our league, but they have many talented players who can make it anywhere in the world; they just have to train very hard,” he said.
After the tournament, the provincial wheelchair basketball team that will represent Limpopo at the Superbets Tournament in Mandeville, Johannesburg, was announced. Local coach Vhumbani Innocent Masakona was elected as the men’s provincial coach, while Lehlohonolo Rakgoale was elected as the women’s provincial coach.

The side from Tshikota was victorious in the 14th Hollywoodbets Easter Soccer Challenge played at the Tshikwarani Rainbow Grounds over the long weekend. Tshikota managed to beat a spirited squad from Madombidzha in the final.
The final match on Sunday (9 April) delivered the much-awaited drama, and after no goals were scored during regulation time, the outcome had to be decided via penalty shootout. Tshikota won 6-5, much to the excitement of their fans and coach, Mr Forget Mafela.
“We started preparing a month before the tournament, and we played some friendly matches,” said Mafela. He add-
ed that this gave the technical team the opportunity to get the right combination of players.
Sixteen local teams participated in the Easter Soccer Challenge. This is an annual event, organised by the non-profit organisation, Mamu Community Development. The winners, Tshikota Location, won R20 000 and a soccer kit, and went home with the floating trophy.
The runners-up, Madombidzha Village, received R10 000 and a soccer kit. The two teams that lost in the semi-final each received R5 000, while teams ending in positions five to eight received R2 500. The teams that fell out in the first round received R500 each.
Mamu’s general secretary, Mr Jafter Mamugudubi, thanked the sponsors for making the event possible. The main spon-
Premjee and Son Cash & Carry, Hollywoodbets, KFC, Collins Sebola Group, Hyundai Louis Trichardt, Nkoli Enterprise, Phadziri Bus Service, Coca-Cola, FNB, Phadziri Coaches, Talisman Hire, R. Phadziri Bros, Mikasa, Postnet Makhado, Soutpansberg Cold Storage, and Trade Post 2075cc / Afrox.
A representative of the Collins Sebola Group spoke on behalf of the sponsors at the prize-giving and said that they were proud to be associated with the event. “We promise to make this tournament even more successful next year and increase the cash prizes to the champions,” he said. Mamu Community Development was also thanked for organising the event.
The stiffest fine was issued to Muraleni United Brothers. They were found guilty of the abandonment of a game when they played against Makhitha Oscar Stars. During this clash, Muraleni’s fans doused liquor
over the keeper of Stars, Faith Ratombo. They were fined R8 000 and forfeited three points to Stars.
Midoroni Real Hearts were fined R3 000 for causing the abandonment of their match, when their supporters doused the referee, Vhutshilo Mafunisa, with liquor. This happened during the match against Makhitha Oscar Stars. The three match points were awarded to Stars.
Musina All Stars were fined R5 000 for causing the
abandonment of their game against Mabvete Peace Makers when the supporters invaded the field of play and refused to leave when the referee ordered them to do so. They were ordered to pay a fine of R5 000 within a period of 30 days. They also forfeited the league points to Peace Makers. Musina United were fined R5 000 for causing the abandonment of the match against Masea Try Again. The three match points were awarded to Try Again.

Arsenal hold log leaders to 3-3 draw
By Kaizer Nengovhela
Madombidzha Arsenal played their hearts out to hold the log leaders of Safa Vhembe stream E1, Tshikhwani Stone Breakers, to a 3-all draw on Sunday in a match played at the Madombidzha Grounds.
The match started at a fast pace, with both sides threatening to be the first to hit the target. Breakers opened the scoring in the 17th minute. Arsenal’s keeper, Bethuel Lethole, was left flat-footed by Dungelo Tshingwala. Breakers missed a fortune in the 20th minute when a header by Livhuwani Masindi went a little wide.
Breakers then scored the second goal through Khetho Tahula. He received a neat pass from Mandla Tshabalala and released a powerful shot from the edge of the box to bring the score to 2-0. Breakers enjoyed the lead until proceedings for the first half came to an end.
The match turned lukewarm early in the second half. This was influenced by the fact that both sides were holding onto the ball for too long. Breakers committed suicide by playing defensive football in the last stanza. That gave the home side the chance to invade their territory.
In the 54th minute, Arsenal’s Sukanani Netshikhwi grabbed his team’s first goal, after he headed in a corner kick by Percy Mushukwa. Arsenal levelled the score when Naledzani Mukondeleli tried his luck from outside the box. The celebration was, however, cut short when Mandla Tshabalala of Breakers scored his team’s third goal.
Baldwin Sepheyi of Arsenal
was brought down inside the penalty area and the referee pointed to the white spot. Percy Mushukwa scored from the white spot to equalise.
After the referee, Madala Kutama, had blown the final whistle, the supporters of Breakers went straight to the lone referee on the field, accusing him of favouritism and dousing him with liquor.

Berea FC score a 4-1 victory over Rambuda’s Young Fighters
By Frank Mavhungu
Berea FC have enhanced their chances to secure a place in the promotional playoffs by beating Rambuda Young Fighters 4-1 in their Safa Vhembe Regional League match that was played at the Mulodi Grounds on Sunday. Berea need only three points in their five remaining fixtures to be sure of a place in the promotional playoffs.
To prove that they were serious about gaining promotion to the ABC Motsepe League at the end of the season, Berea started the game like a house on fire, with their strikers firing from all angles.
They took only nine minutes to stamp their authority. The team’s captain, Dakalo Ratshitanga, hit the target with a neat header from a square pass from Timothy Netshiungani.
The goal was a wake-up call to the visitors from Dzimauli. They regrouped from behind and took the game to the home side. Their stamina, however, vanished with time and they were again looking hopeless. Berea capitalised on the setback and scored their second goal via Timothy Netshiungani. He beat the offside trap and blasted in a rocket from inside the box.
Young Fighters’ solitary goal came towards the end of
the first half. A defender of Berea, Rotshidzwa Ntshavheni, handled the ball within the box, prompting the referee, Mr Oriel Mulovhedzi, to award a penalty to Young Fighters. Alilali Nelutshindwi made no mistake from the white spot.
Berea solidified their striking force by introducing four pairs of fresh legs. Their third goal came via Dakalo Ratshitanga in the 54th minute. He blasted in a rocket, following a scramble within the box. Ronny Mavunga scored the fourth later in the game. Berea are now leading Stream IB with 54 points, 14 ahead of Mulodi Freedom Birds.

Tshilonwe Young Bombers were crowned as the champions of the Rirothe Funeral Services soccer tournament, which took place on 8 and 9 April at Tshivhilwi village. Tshilonwe beat Buluni Happy Boys 3-1 in the final match. The football tournament was the brainchild of the founders Ndivhoniswani and Sharon Makhani. “The aim is to form social cohesion within the different communities. We also like the idea of getting kids active and helping them interact with residents of other villages nearby,” said Ndivhoniswani.
Eight teams participated in the event. As winners, Tshilonwe Young Bombers received
a R20 000 cash prize, two soccer kits, gold medals and a floating trophy. Buluni Happy Boys received R5 000, two soccer kits and silver medals. The two teams that lost in the semi-finals, Vondwe United Brothers and Phandulaluvalo FC, received soccer kits. The managing director of Rirothe Funeral Services, Ms Sharon Makhani, said that she was impressed by the manner in which the tournament was administered. She revealed that she will continue to sponsor the tournament in the coming years. When asked why she had decided to pump money into football development, Makhani said that experience had taught her that local teams had difficulty coping without a sponsor.
“It is through the support from the community that this business is where it is today,” she said. Makhani added that identifying future stars’ talent at grassroots level was important, which was what the tournament was all about.
According to Tshilonwe Young Bombers’ coach, Mr Maanda “Mila” Magaligwa, they are very excited about winning the tournament. “It means a lot to our players, and we are grateful for this opportunity as it will assist us a lot in buying things like soccer boots, and paying for transport to attend matches. Winning this trophy has contributed to the team’s self-esteem and it has really affirmed the players’ skills,” he said.

The unsung heroes that keep football alive
By Victor Mukwevho
Football referees are some of the most underrated professionals in the world of sports all over the world. Soccer players and football administrators hog the limelight, while referees are seen as just mere contributors when games are being played and disappear into the wilderness when they blow the last whistle.
One of the up-and-coming football referees in the Vhembe district, Tshifhiwa Tshishonga, who is now officiating in the ABC Motsepe League, says referees are as important as players and administrators in football.
“If you select the best football players in the world, including Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and Kylian Mbappé, they will never play a football game if there are no referees. We are as important as other role players in the game,” he said.
Tshishonga said he had started as a football player but had switched to refereeing when he had hung up his soccer boots a few years ago. He said that he had attended refereeing courses under the tutelage of one of the most experienced referees in the country, Mr Ephraim Singo, and after finishing his course, he had started officiating in the Thulamela Local Football Association (Thulfa) in 2014. “I was promoted to the SAB League in 2016, and last year I
was promoted to the ABC League, and to be honest, I am enjoying my job as a referee,” he said.
When asked whether referees were really at times receiving bribes to influence the outcome of games, he said he
had heard such rumours many times, but he had never been approached with a bribe offer.
“I will never do that in my life. I love my job and cannot risk my career because of unfaithful people,” he said.

Try Again crush United
By Kaizer Nengovhela
Madombidzha Try Again crushed Vleifontein United 4-0 in their Safa Vhembe SAB match played at the Madombidzha Grounds on Sunday.
The score was not, however, a true reflection of the game. United managed to match Try Again pound for pound in all departments, but the only thing they could not do was to break their rock-solid wall of defence.
United’s keeper, Junior Ramabulana, was the busiest player in the first 10 minutes. He executed several brilliant saves. Try Again took the lead in the 14th minute. Their sharpshooter, Tumi Mpfupa, headed home, following

enough for the Thohoyandou side not to expect a walk in the park on Saturday. Hungry Lions are lying in the fourth position on the log standings with 43 points, seven behind the top three teams, Casric Stars, Polokwane City and
Cape Town Spurs.
Should they manage to beat Black Leopards on Saturday and any of the top three teams donate vital points to their opponents, Hungry Lions will be in the hot race to book a place in
the promotional playoffs and to lift the league trophy as well. The Kimberley side played to a 1-1 draw in their last match, against Venda Football Academy at the Thohoyandou Stadium, two weeks ago.
a free kick that was taken by Hulisani Mbodi. They increased the lead in the 27th minute when Tshikumbana tried his luck with a half volley from the 25-metre area. The shot was too hot for the United’s keeper to handle.
Tshikumbana was on target again in the 39th minute and scored his team’s third goal. He caught the keeper napping with a free kick. The score was still 3-0 when the teams adjourned for the half-time break.
In the second half, United continued to fight collectively, creating some promising moves from behind. They conceded a silly goal in the 64th minute. Seboseso Ramalata gave the ball the final touch, following a square pass from Doctor Ratshibaya.
Although Black Leopards must win all their remaining matches to escape the relegation axe at the end of the season, the head coach of the team, Mr Owen Da Gama, said they would take one game at a time. He emphasised the fact that their primary focus was on their match against Hungry Lions and that they would start with their preparations for their next game after Saturday’s game.
The fact that Hungry Lions still stand an outside chance to secure a place in the promotional playoffs is reason

Sisters
FC give Rodadau Ladies a soccer lesson
By Frank Mavhungu
Rodadau Ladies’ unbeaten record was ended by Sisters FC, who beat them 2-0 in their Sasol Women’s League match that was played at the Tshitungulwane Grounds outside Vuwani on Saturday.
Rodadau had beaten Real Mighty Girls 2-1 at the Xikukwani Stadium in Giyani in their opening league match. They crushed Merwe United Ladies by the same margin in their second match before suffering their first defeat last Saturday.
Rodadau were lucky not to have conceded an avalanche of goals in last Saturday’s game against Sisters FC. The visitors from Bolobedu village in the Tzaneen area made their intentions clear from the start. They initiated some promising moves from behind, forcing the opposition to play with their backs against the wall.
The referee, Ms Vhahangwele Nembaleni, flashed the first yellow card in the 18th minute. Mokgaetjie
Tebetha of Rodadau was reprimanded for obstructing Daphney Baloyi. Realising that their scoring chances were slim, Rodadau then started to play defensive football. That prompted the visitors to move one defender from the line of defence to add to their striking force, which proved to be a clever move on the part of the technical staff.
Sisters opened their account in the 24th minute when Daphney Baloyi tried her luck with a ground cutter from the 25-metre area. The keeper of Rodadau, Lerato Molete, watched helplessly as the ball went beyond her reach.
Sisters took advantage of the confusion that followed and increased the lead towards the end of the first half. Their fast forward, Lethabo Moloto, went loose from the right corner and showed the keeper of Rodadau the wrong way with a half volley.
Following the defeat, Rodadau have dropped one step down on the log standings. They are now lying in the fourth position with 6 points.
The struggle for promotion will continue this weekend among the teams campaigning under the banner of the Sasol Women’s League in the Limpopo Stream.
After registering their first victory last weekend, Lacoste Morning Stars are now determined to collect more points
when they meet Rodadau FC at the Shayandima School Grounds on Sunday afternoon. Although they were playing away from home, Morning Stars managed to restore the team’s lost pride by crushing Sealene Ladies 2-0 at the Lulekani Stadium outside Phalaborwa last Saturday. The defenders of Rodadau will have to double
their efforts to stop the Stars goal poachers in Asiashu Mudau and Gumani Mulibana.
Sisters FC will be expected to continue from where they left off last Saturday when they host Phomolong Ladies at the Bolobedu Grounds outside Tzaneen. Sisters are sharpened to kill after their 2-0 victory over Rodadau Ladies.
Tshandama Young Stars have reason to believe that they will deposit more points into their account this weekend. They will play against the struggling Merwe United Ladies at the Tshandama Grounds. Young Stars are still to lose a league game this season and are still fresh from a 3-0 victory over Real Mighty Girls.
Two for Joy Ladies will enjoy the home-ground advantage when they entertain Masakona Liberty Experience at the Tshirenzheni Grounds. Two for Joy are still in joyous mood after they had brutally walloped Phomolong Ladies 9-0 at the Lulekani Stadium in Phalaborwa last Sunday.
Liberty Experience are still battling to find a winning combination to win a league match to date. The other weekend fixtures are Ramatlaohle Ladies FC vs Mandebele Happy Fighters, University of Limpopo vs Seven Stars Ladies, FC 50 Stars United vs Marumo Gallants and Schoonoord Chiefs Ladies vs Kanatla Ladies.

Maindis must beat Malamulele’s City Lads
By Frank Mavhungu
Maindis Ladies are fast becoming the milk cow of the Hollywoodbets Super League. After donating vital league points to Richmond United, who beat them 2-0 at the Galeshewe Stadium in Kimberley last Saturday, Maindis are gearing up for another tough battle this weekend. They will test their strength against City Lads at the Malamulele Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
Maindis have managed to register only one victory in nine games. The team is currently rooted at the bottom of the log with three points.
Failure to collect the maximum points at the expense of City Lads on Saturday will mean that moving out of the relegation quagmire will not be an easy journey to the Bungeni-based side.
City Lads are currently lying in the 12th position on the log standings with seven points. Unlike Maindis, City Lads had managed to win two of the eight games they have played to date.
The head coach of Maindis Ladies, Mr Sipho Mabuza, is still adamant that things will soon take a new shape in their camp. He appealed to the team’s enthusiastic fans not to press the panic button. He said that the team’s per-
formance in their first nine games was a worrying factor to everyone in their camp.
Durban Ladies will battle for league points with Royal AM at the Princess Magogo Stadium in Durban in their KZN derby. The pace setters, Mamelodi Sundowns, will travel to the Tsakane Stadium in Johannesburg, where their match against JVW FC will take place. Coal City Wizards have a date with TUT Football Club at the Puma Rugby Stadium in Emalahleni.
The other fixtures are UWC Ladies FC vs University of Pretoria, Copper Belts vs Thunderbirds Ladies, First Touch Academy vs Richmond United and TS Galaxy
Queens vs University of Johannesburg.

VFA need to beat Uthongati to dodge relegation ghost
By Frank Mavhungu
Venda Football Academy (VFA) must beat Uthongathi
FC to put some space between them and the relegation ghost when the two teams meet in their Motsepe Foundation Championship League match at the Princess Magogo Stadium in Durban on Sunday afternoon.
A win for VFA will be enough for the club to retain their Motsepe Foundation Championship franchise for at least one more season. VFA are lying in the 12th spot on the log standings with 30 points. Uthongathi have only pride at stake in the match as they are on the safe side regarding relegation. The “Cane Cutters”, as they are affectionately called, are in the seventh spot on the log standings with 35 points.
A quick glance at the team’s track record shows that Uthongathi are good travellers. Most of their victories were registered away from home. The KZN side had managed to win nine of the 26 games they had played to date. Uthongathi are still to beat VFA in a league match. They played to a 1-1 draw in their first-round league match, which was played at the Thohoyandou Stadium on Wednesday, 18 January.
The defenders of Uthongathi will have a mammoth task to stop VFA’s goal poachers in Wanga Khorommbi, Rhulani Manzini and the team’s Zimbabwean playmaker, Tatenda Tavengwa.
In other matches, Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila will rub shoulders with Magesi FC at the Dr Molemela Stadium in Bloemfontein. Black Leopards will visit Hungry Lions at the Windhoek Draught Stadium in Kimberley. Polokwane City will play against JDR Stars at the Soshanguve Giant Stadium in Pretoria in one of three matches that will be played on Friday afternoon. The other fixtures are Cape Town Spurs vs Platinum City Rovers, MM Platinum vs Pretoria Callies, Cape Town All Stars vs Baroka FC and Casric Stars vs University of Pretoria FC.
Leopards and Siphelele Ntshangase part ways
By Frank Mavhungu
The relationship between Black Leopards FC and one of the team’s vastly experienced players, Siphelele Ntshangase, is something of the past. According to the chairman of the club, Mr David Thidiela, the player’s employment contract was terminated on Tuesday.
Mr Thidiela stated that the player’s conduct had compelled them to terminate his employment contract abruptly. Tshifhe, as he is also known, refused to elaborate on the matter, saying that what was important was for him to tell the

public that Ntshangase was not a player of Black Leopards anymore.
The 29-year-old striker joined Lidoda duvha towards the end of last year. The former national U/23 striker has scored only one goal during his stay with the Thohoyandou side.
During an interview with Ntshangase, he confirmed that he was no longer a player of Black Leopards. The former Kaizer Chiefs’ playmaker has further indicated that no bad blood existed between the two parties as he had parted ways with the club amicably. Asked about his next stop, Ntshangase said that he was going to relax at home and wait for job offers.
South African female lightweight boxing champion Raider Muleba will defend her title for the first time when she steps into the ring with Bonita van Jaarsveld from Gauteng. The match is scheduled to take place on Friday, 28 April, at the Meropa Casino in Polokwane.
Speaking to Limpopo Mirror on Tuesday, Muleba said she had been putting a lot of work in and was optimistic that she would retain her title. “I worked very hard for this fight, and nothing will stop me from retaining this
belt. I am calling on all my fans from the Vhembe region to come in big numbers to support me. Polokwane is just around the corner, and I need your support,” she said.
She added that she wanted to prove once more that a girl from the villages could defend the national belt.
Her trainer and manager, Mr John “Smoking Joe” Nemakonde, said that as the only champion in his stable, they would do all in their power to retain the belt. “Raider has been working very hard for the past two months in preparation for this fight. We are definitely going to win,” he said.
