Total shutdown Residents of Gogobole and surrounding areas of Sinthumule went on the rampage and barricaded the main road from the villages to Louis Trichardt on Wednesday.

The protesters were blocking roads using stones and all sorts of rubble. The reason for the shutdown was for the release of the three suspects who had been arrested in connection with the burning of five houses and two cars at Gogobole and Tshiozwi. (See story on page 4)

The residents are also angry about the bad state of the road from Louis Trichardt and in the Kutama area, as well as the shortage of water.

did not report for work and school children were forced to stay at home because of the barricaded roads and the lack of transport.

Shops in the area were closed for most of the morning. Angry members of the community even broke down a bus shelter and placed it in the road. The residents went to the T-junction at Madombidzha and were joined by the Madombidzha community.

The unrest also follows the ongoing problem of housebreaking and theft in the Sinthumule area, with residents seemingly deciding to take the law into their own hands.

Residents appealed to the SAPS to maintain a policy of zero tolerance towards all crime. They said a lot of crimes had occurred in the area and in most cases the suspects were known by the community.

Residents also asked the police to work out a plan with time frames and to stipulate how the community could become involved in pro-active crime prevention.

Until the issue has been resolved, people from outside areas are warned to avoid the roads leading to Sinthumule and Kutama.

Brig Motlafela Mojapelo of the SAPS in Limpopo confirmed that they had arrested three suspects after some community members had set alight five houses and two cars. They were charged with arson, public violence and malicious damage to property.

When going to press, the situation was still very tense in the area. It was also reported that the police used rubber bullets to disperse the crowd.

Grade 12 learners attend two-day career expo in Thohoyandou

By Silas Nduvheni The Deputy Minister of Communication and Digital Technology (DCDT), Ms Pinkie Kekana, officiated at the opening of a two-day career expo at the Thohoyandou Indoor Sport Centre earlier this week.

About 500 Grade 12 learners selected from 10 schools around the province attended the expo, which provided information regarding different careers, bursaries offered by universities and companies around the country.

The career expo was conducted by the DCDT in conjunction with the Vhembe Department of Education and the learners were exposed to

presentations, career opportunities and bursaries from the State Information Technology Agency (SITA), the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA), Huawei, MTN, and Multichoice, among others.

Speaking on Monday during the opening of the expo, Kekana said that her department had brought many learners, some from deep rural schools, under one roof, giving them opportunities to learn more about technology as South Africa moved towards the Fourth Industrial Revolution. “Vhembe region in Limpopo is one of the best performing in terms of the matric results and we want other learners from some

schools to learn what schools like Mbilwi, Thengwe and Tshivhase are doing to make us proud.”

She added that agriculture was the economic mainstay of the Vhembe District, and for learners to be exposed to technology for food production, security and sustainability was important.

One of the learners who attended the DCDT Career Expo in Thohoyandou, Pfariso Netshipale, a learner at Marude Secondary School, said the expo was an eye opener for her and other learners.

She told the gathering with other learners that they would work hard throughout the year to improve their career opportunities.

Ranks closed amidst local taxi war

By Kaizer Nengovhela The police closed some taxi ranks in Musina earlier this week and threatened to close down more routes, should the feud between two rival taxi associations not be resolved.

This is the latest development in the fight between the Beit Bridge Taxi Association (BTA) and the LTT Musina Taxi Association.

A taxi was destroyed amidst the taxi violence earlier this week, and the police confirmed that four members of the BTA had been arrested. On Monday, the police closed the taxi rank.

He was assassinated in front of his house in what is believed to be an incident related to the taxi war.

Members of the BTA have been barred from operating on the Musina-to-Louis Trichardt route as well as the Musina-to-Polokwane route, following a court ruling in the Polokwane High Court. The Limpopo Department of Roads and Transport, as well as the SA Police, were further instructed to enforce the law by issuing fines and arresting members of the BTA, should they operate on these routes.

“The LTT-Musina Associa-

tion will not allow a situation where alleged hitmen are hired to attack taxi leaders, commuters and drivers with impunity, and members of rival associations attack one another and damage vehicles,” a member of the LTT-Musina group said this week.

LTT-Musina members welcomed the closure of the routes, because they reckoned it would force the two taxi associations to “make up their minds what they want to do. Do we want to continue working or continue fighting?”.

An LTT-Musina member told Limpopo Mirror that their association had been operating the route for a long time, while the BTA started operating on the route without the necessary license, causing conflict.

Church rewards the top Grade 12s

By Silas Nduvheni A rural-based church, Redeeming Showers of Grace Christian Church International in Tshitereke village outside Thohoyandou, has taken the lead in rewarding hardworking Grade 12 learners of the 2019 class from all circuits in the Vhembe region.

Recently, the church’s pastor, Dr Lennox Nemukula, told the gathering that he believed in hard work and encouraged learners to take education seriously.

During an award ceremony, more than 50 learners were given laptops and tablets, which will advance their learning and teaching at

tertiary level. “I urge learners to use the little resources they have to advance themselves for a better education. I don’t believe in falling and, through hard work, I believe God will bless learners who are serious about education,” said Nemukula.

He said his church had started rewarding hardworking learners in 2015.

They started with Tshinanne Circuit but later expanded the awards to all circuits in the Vhembe region. “I am also excited that some of the Grade 12 learners here in our church have performed well with five distinctions, and we celebrate with them.”

Annah Magwala to stand down as Gogobole leader

By Kaizer Nengovhela Matodzi Annah Magwala, who has been the interim headwoman at Gogobole since 2008, was told by the Polokwane High Court last week to relinquish her position as traditional leader.

She may no longer perform any of the customary functions, such as the granting of occupational rights, and she may not receive any gifts as headwoman.

On Friday, 7 February, an interdict was granted to prohibit Magwala from carrying on as headwoman in Gogobole. The interdict was asked for by Chief Rudzani Harold Sinthumule, Nyamukamadi Mukondi Mukhuba (the makhadzi) and the Gogobole royal family.

In court documents presented, Magwala argued that she had been correctly identified as the caretaker headwoman by the royal family in 2008. She is the daughter of the late VhoMakhadzi Matamela Ramabulana, the former headwoman.

“She was further nominated to assume the function of regent until she was recognised as a traditional leader,” summarized Judge Gerrit Muller in his judgment.

What exactly caused Magwala’s fall-out with the Gogobole royal family is not mentioned in the court papers. The judge also did not want to express an opinion on who the successor

should be, and he opted to focus on the processes that should have been followed. In her defence, Magwala’s legal team argued that the traditional council had never submitted the necessary documents to the premier of the province to legitimize her appointment as headwoman.

“It cannot be stressed enough that the parties should utilise

The parties were allowed a week after the evidence was concluded to try and find an amicable solution, but this seemingly did not happen. The judge subsequently made a

ruling on the evidence before the court, which indicated that Magwala had never been properly registered in terms of the relevant laws as a traditional leader. Such leaders must firstly be identified by the royal family and then recognised by the premier.

“Without recognition, such a person is simply not a traditional leader in terms of the provisions of the Limpopo Act and, consequently, not a headman or headwoman,” the judge said.

The court ruling was welcomed by the Sinthumule royal family and their spokesperson, Vhamusanda Vho-Mbulaheni Ramabulana, said it favoured both parties because the court had not tried to appoint a new leader. “A chieftainship is not something that can be inherited. It is the property of the royal family, who act as its custodians,” he said.

Ramabulana said that a meeting had been held last Wednesday in Gogobole.

During this meeting, it was explained to the community that the court had ruled that Matamela Annah Magwala had been removed as leader. Her elder sister, Vho-Nyamukamadi Mukondi Mukhuba, was introduced as the new Khadzi, who will serve as acting headwoman at Gogobole while the royal family decides who will be the rightful new leader at the village.

In 2012, Government proclaimed that 21 February will be observed and commemorated as Armed Forces Day (AFD).

AFD is not just about putting the SANDF through its paces in a simulated combat environment; it is all about reaching out to the people. When we set out to hold AFD this year we have two major objectives: to showcase the SANDF to the people it is sworn to serve and to test its abilities to defend the sovereignty of this nation. Mobilising 8500 soldiers, sailors, medics and air force personnel from across the country to a single point - and keeping them there for a protracted period of time- is a major logistical exercise.

It is also a day on which the South African population honours men and women of the SANDF by affirming its support and gratitude to them for upholding the Constitution of the Republic. It is for this reason that the AFD coincides with the commemoration of the sinking of the SS Mendi on 21 February 1917 during which 616 were from the South African Native Corps and 33 crew members perished in the icy waters of the English Channel.

Armed Forces Day 2020 will be officiated by the President of the Republic of South Africa and Commander-in-Chief of the SANDF, President Cyril Ramaphosa at the AFD military parade on 21 February 2020 at Suid Street (CBD), Polokwane.

The once beautiful border town of Musina is falling apart, and one only has to take a drive through it to realise this.

“What did Musina have before gravel roads?” asked one irate resident. Then the answer comes: “Tarred streets!” Some may find this funny, but it is not. “By now we’ve almost become use to the ‘hop along’ when driving through town,” remarked another resident and business owner. For her, the situation borders on the ridiculous.

Musina, like the whole of the Soutpansberg area, experienced good rains over the past two weeks and for that everyone is extremely grateful, especially people in this dry and arid part of the country. On 7 February alone, the town received a quick 60mm, causing localised flooding. This localised flooding damaged the already dilapidated street infrastructure even further.

A post about the state of Musina’s streets on Facebook over the past weekend sparked quite a reaction. “One of the roads leading to our primary school, it should be closed. Yes, that is a 500ml empty coke bottle in one of the holes ... why is nothing done?” reads the post on Musina Bakgat Biltong’s page. Accompanying the post were pictured of the sad state of Copper Street.

Many responded by saying that the current state of Copper Street was so bad that it should be closed for safety reasons.

“Musina Local Municipality … no will and no shame!” was Cecil Henry Nel’s comment on the post. “Sad state of our roads in and around Musina. The problem is that our leaders don’t care about us and they don’t care about our environment,” commented Sewani JC Kaunda.

His advice was to get a few good Samaritans together, fix the streets and then take the invoices to the municipality to be reimbursed.

From all the comments the blame for the sad state of Musina’s streets is squarely placed on the Musina Municipality’s shoulders. Some recommend that the Musina Municipality should be taken to court to not only fix the roads but also to deliver better services. “Our town is dirty and dilapidated,” wrote Nicoline Olivier.

Chantal Schroeder, however, warned that taking a government institution to court was not easy as these cases normally ended up in the High Court, which could cost the plaintiffs millions in expenses. For the interim, some commented that it would be better to get a few people together and repair the damaged roads themselves.

In response to the complaints about the bad state of the streets in Musina, municipal spokesperson Mr Wilson Dzebu responded by saying that although they had an effective maintenance plan, executing the plan was a problem. “…it is sometimes hindered by (a) shortage of resources, financial constraints and (a) shortage of manpower,” said Dzebu.

Dzebu added that they had identified various streets in town for urgent repair, Watson Street being one of them. “The damage caused by recent rains is huge,” he said.

The fact that the municipality is experiencing financial constraints was clear from Dzebu’s response that repair work could only start with financial assistance from the private sector.

“With the financial assistance from De Beers Venetia Mine, an amount of R6,5 million has been put aside to repair damaged roads. The work will commence at the beginning of next month (March 2020),” said Dzebu. This project excludes the upgrading of Harper road, for which De Beers has already appointed a contractor, with work also to start next month (March) and to be completed the end of September 2020.

“The Harper road is a different project altogether. It has nothing to do with the R6,5 million.

The R6,5 million is for refurbishing internal access roads,” Dzebu said. He concluded that the municipality hoped to see a huge improvement in the state of their roads once these projects started.

Johnson’s Masindi’s sounds are out of this world

By Tshifhiwa Mukwevho The music of Johnson's Masindi is melodious, and the first impression the listener gets is that the singer and his technical team have had enough time to work on the project.

A resident of Lukau in Tshilamba, Johnson's is a gospel singer and songwriter who discovered his talent when he was only 17. He was just singing in the church before the service could start and the leader of the worship team heard him. “She told me that I should consider joining them in the worship team because she could see that I had talent,” he said.

He has just finished his debut studio-recorded album, Tshilidzi tshavho, a project that was done at Mphagani Studio. It comprises stand-out songs such as U na ndavha, Vhugala ndi havho, We worship You, and Zwi do luga. “As for me, music is a way to express myself. It keeps me company when I'm alone and it always gives me

something to do, as I sing while doing my daily work,” he said.

He said that he held the view that music could achieve more in a crime-infested society through the opening of music schools for people who had nothing to do, in order to keep them busy. “Music provides not only entertainment but healing in many social areas,” he said.

His mentor is Mr Mbangiseni Mphaga, who has a kind heart and is mainly focusing on developing new young music talent in Limpopo. “Mr Mphaga is a very supportive man who is also patient enough when providing his mentoring,” he said. “With regard to singing, I look up to Ndivhaleni Musetha and Voice Tsilatsila for inspiration. I like the way how they give advice to the younger generation of singers.”

Moque Slenderboy on his way to stardom

By Tshifhiwa Mukwevho Local rhumba kwasa and disco house musician, Moque Slenderboy, believes that anything is possible if one works hard and never gives up.

Born Zwivhuya Makondelele, the 26-year-old from Fondwe village in Nzhelele has risen from humble beginnings to be a local phenomenon. He started his career as a backup dancer for Makhadzi in 2010. "I was determined in what I was doing that time, learning everything about music and also believing in myself that one day I would release my own album," he said.

This dream was realised in 2014 when he released his first album, Tshimange. His second album was Mmbwa yanga. He was featured on Baby M’s Mitambo ya kale and on Esnath Mulaudzi's album, Kubevha.

Working with Makhadzi played a crucial role in his musical career. "She motivated me to always do my best and I learnt a lot from her since we worked together for a long time. When I look where Makhadzi is today, it gives me hope that anything is possible if you work hard and believe in yourself," he said.

He grew up in a musical family. "My family taught me how to sing. I used to participate in traditional dances at school, and I was the leader in those dances, so it motivated me a lot. That is why I am a singer today," he explained.

"I have achieved a lot so far. I can see that I'm on the right path, because I have performed in big events and shared a stage with well-known artists such as King Monada, DJ Tira and Sho Madjozi. I'm happy to see that people love what I do. My latest album, Tshikandeledzi, is doing very well commercially and I am receiving positive feedback from the fans."

He is ready for collaboration. "I'm ready to work with any artist, and I will continue producing quality music," he said. He attended Jack Lavhengwa Secondary School. After passing matric, he went to study tourism at Vhembe TVET College.

By Tshifhiwa Mukwevho A resident of Itsani village, Thomani Tshikororo, considers himself a leading reggae artist whose musical journey started way back in 1999.

In the early stages of his music career, he struggled to raise funds to record his music, even though everyone around kept telling him that his musical talent was not that of an ordinary singer, but that of the masters and legends of Jamaican reggae musicians.

“I took my time nurturing my talent, because I have always believed in my talent,” he said.

“It might have taken me decades to record and release my first album, but I have been performing my songs through the years.”

He started writing new songs specially for his debut album, See the light, which was finally released on 1 June 2013. It was recorded at High Note Records, and it was engineered

by Hani Mutele.

His second album was True to myself, followed

by Gundo, The Peace of Mind, Dog eat dog, and Butter and bread.

“I have become famous for songs such as (Africans) let's be strong, See

the lights, Gundo (Victory), True to myself, and A peace of mind,” he said.

This singer has great studio and live-performance experience.

His music is smooth, refreshing and lively. It teaches about love, political and religious views. His musical style is world reggae, heavily influenced by artists such as Majek Fashek, Nasio Fontaine, Bob Marley, Ziggy Marley, Colbert Mukwevho, Jacky Nethomboni and other reggae artists.

Muligwe said all victims of abuse had to report such incidents to the police. “Even when the abuser is the sole breadwinner in your house, report them to the police because that person might end up killing you and your children,” he said.

The station programme manager of Phalaphala FM, Ms Sharon Ravele, said the station took pride in all the partners in the province. “For this reason,” she said, “we pay tribute to and celebrate Valentine’s Day from all walks of life. Despite this milestone achievement, partners today are faced with various challenges that require of us to remain relentless in fighting various causes.”

She urged community members to report their abusers to the police, so that they can be put behind bars where they belong. Ravele condemned people who kill women and children, saying they were destroying the entire world. She reiterated that women and children needed to be protected.

“Government must be strict with people who victimise and rape women and children. Victims of abuse must not be intimidated in courts,” she said.

The incidents of abuse continue despite the existence of a progressive constitutional and legislative framework that protects women while promoting a human rights culture.

The conflict within the Ravele Communal Property Association (CPA) seems to be far from resolved. The CPA’s annual general meeting, scheduled to take place on 8 February, was disrupted and had to be postponed again.

A group from within the CPA members, calling themselves the Concerned Group, voiced their discontent with the process of verifying members, as well as the building of a community hall on land that does not belong to the CPA. One of the Concerned Group’s members, Mr Aifheli Bvumbi, explained that the meeting was disrupted after the chairperson of the CPA did not want to provide an opportunity for some beneficiaries to raise concerns or ask questions.

Bvumbi said that the beneficiaries had voiced their dissatisfaction with the way the CPA was being run. A document was also compiled to set out many of their grievances. In the document, one of the points raised is the building of a community hall on land that belongs to the Ravele family and not the Ravele CPA. The group argue that the consent to build the hall was not properly acquired among all the role players.

SASSA says she is “dead,” but she’s alive

Ms Takalani Margaret Rasikhwela, declared dead by Sassa.

A mentally ill person, Ms Takalani Margaret Rasikhwela of Tshiozwi, was declared dead by the South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) when she applied for a disability grant, even though she is still alive.

Ms Matodzi Rasikhwela, her elder sister, said, “How can Sassa tell us Takalani is dead, yet we are with her at home? Imagine the pain of a poor, mentally ill person who has not started receiving a grant because of Sassa’s inefficiency. Takalani has lost hope of ever enjoying the grant.”

Matodzi has visited Sassa’s offices in Louis Trichardt several times with Takalani and submitted countless affidavits and letters, but the problem has not been resolved as officials keep informing her that they are attending to the problem.

“We can’t believe that it can take so many years to rectify the mistake, while all the evidence is there,” said Matodzi. She added that they had visited Makhado Home Affairs in 2019 but were told that Takalani was still alive, according Home Affairs’ database.

When applying for the grant in 2018, the family was told Takalani was dead according to the Sassa database.

When Limpopo Mirror contacted the Sassa provincial spokesperson, Mr Norman Kutama, he confirmed that in their Sassa record system, Takalani was dead.

Kutama further said that the family must come to them with the confirmation from the Department of Home Affairs that Takalani was still alive. When we contacted the Louis Trichardt office to verify if Takalani was alive, they confirmed that she was still alive according to their records.

Mphephu advised the gathering of people that they must allow the Nesengani tribe to deal with issues of the chieftaincy alone and warned that whoever tried to cause division would be dealt with. He urged the communities to support the new senior traditional leader, so that the delivery of services could reach even the poorest communities without delay or favour.

Community members, family and members of the Apostolic Faith Mission Church came in large numbers to pay tribute to the former education guru, Mr Elijah Musobi (80), who was buried at Tshiozwi a fortnight ago.

Musobi was a pioneer in the development of education in the Vhembe District. He died two weeks ago at his home after a long illness.

All the speakers recognized the good work that Musobi had done for the community as a leader and educator.

A family representative, Mr Nkhumeleni “Murema” Musobi, told the mourners that the family had accepted the loss although it was difficult to cope with. Prof Mawana Masenyane said that although the family, friends and church had accepted what had happened, it would be difficult to forget

that this death had robbed the community of an energetic leader who had been full of zeal and courage.

She said Musobi would always be remembered for being the driver of opportunities within the communities where he had lived. “All we have to do is to give full support to the family to make sure that their loved one is given a dignified send-off.

We are saddened by his untimely departure.”

She added that, instead of constantly shedding tears, “we must also go down memory lane and remember the good things that Musobi did for this community while he was still alive”.

The chairperson of the local Sanco, Mr Shaft Matumba, also paid tribute to Musobi.

“He was a great man who sacrificed his life to serve his people with distinction. He played a major role in relation to community development initiatives. We will always remember him for the contributions he made in our community.”

Kidnap suspect found dead in cell

By Kaizer Nengovhela The man accused of kidnapping a toddler, Moses Mongwe (30), was found dead in a Giyani holding cell on Tuesday morning.

He was arrested in connection with the kidnapping and disappearance of a 19-monthold toddler at Shawela Village a fortnight ago. He appeared in the Giyani Magistrate’s Court on Monday and his case was

postponed to Tuesday, but he was found dead in the holding cell before that could happen.

According to the police the toddler’s mother had allegedly visited Mongwe, whom she had allegedly met through social media. An argument apparently erupted when she wanted to return home.

The suspect apparently followed her to the local bus stop where he snatched the child from her and disappeared into the nearby bushes. The police

were notified, and they reacted swiftly. A case of kidnapping was then opened and a search operation for both the suspect and the toddler was activated.

“On Tuesday morning, the body of the suspect, Mongwe, was found dead in the police holding cell. The circumstances surrounding the incident are being investigated,” said SAPS spokesperson Brig Motlafela Mojapelo.

Black Leopards on bumpy path for Premiership survivial

By Frank Mavhungu With nine matches remaining before the league activities for the current soccer season come to an end, the race for the league title and to avoid the relegation axe is becoming hotter by the day. A quick glance at the remaining fixtures for Black Leopards shows that the local lads have a steep mountain to climb.

Only three of their nine remaining matches will be played at home. Lidoda Duvha will travel to Polokwane twice in a row. Their first trip will be on Sunday, 01 March, when they visit Polokwane City at the Peter Mokaba Stadium. They will come back home and rest for five days before undertaking another trip to Limpopo Province’s capital on Saturday, 7 March.

This time around they will be paying a visit to Baroka FC, with whom they will lock horns at the same venue.
