Is Thohoyandou the rape capital of the north?

The Limpopo Department of Health has started with the rollout of Phase 2 of the Covid-19 vaccination drive. During Phase 2 senior citizens aged 60 years and above are targeted. Has Thohoyandou become the “rape capital” of Limpopo? Judging by the latest statistics released by the SA Police, this busy Vhembe town has a serious problem in terms of sexual offences. Some, however, argue that sexual offenders are confronted in this town, whereas, in many other places, the problem simply gets swept under the rug.

The Thohoyandou police station is the third “busiest” in the country as far as sexual offences are concerned. In the period between January and March this year, 73 such cases were reported.

Lusikisiki in the Eastern Cape was no 1 in this category, with 88 cases, followed

by Inanda in Kwazulu-Natal, with 76 cases. Three Limpopo police stations made the “Top-30” list, with Seshego reporting 52 cases and Mankweng 49 cases.

As far as rape cases are concerned, Thohoyandou again came in third, with 63 cases being reported. This is down from the 83 cases reported in the same period two years ago (Jan - Mar 2019), but up from last year’s 50 cases. Limpopo has four candidates on the list of top “rape” stations. Mankweng reported 41 cases in this period, Seshego 36 and Giyani 34.

However, not only sexual offences cause Thohoyandou to feature high up on the list of problematic crime areas.

This police station is also one of the Top-30 police stations in the country

as far as robberies at residential houses are concerned. It ranks at no 24, with 31 housebreakings in the fourth quarter (Jan – March 2021). First in this category is the Honeydew police station in Gauteng, with 68 cases. Three years ago, Thohoyandou topped this category with 80 cases of house robberies being reported.

Burglaries at non-residential premises seem to be a huge problem in Thohoyandou. The station comes in at number 10 on the Top-30 list, with 86 cases reported. This is considerably down on last year’s figure of 121. In Limpopo, the policing area that struggles the most with this kind of crime is Polokwane, where 101 cases were reported. Makhado’s name also features at no 21 on this list, with 65 cases reported. This is close to double the number of the previous period, when 36 cases were reported. At Seshego, 59 cases were reported.

Thohoyandou is the only police station in Limpopo that features in the Top 30 as far as driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs is concerned. In the fourth quarter, 61 such cases were reported.Musina’s police station only features on one of the Top-30 lists, namely that of sexual offences detected as a result of police action. Musina recorded 31 such cases. Three Limpopo police stations are at the top of this list, with Mokopane being number one with 267 cases. Northam is number four with 92 cases and Polokwane number five with 88 cases. Sexual offences seem to be on the rise in Limpopo and are a

serious problem. Between January and March this year, 838 rape cases were reported and 115 cases of sexual assault.

The total of all reported sexual offences in the province is 1 016, which is 5,8% more than the previous year’s 960. The national figures show that, year-on-year, sexual offences have shown a slight decline from 12 627 to 12 133.

What is also genuinely concerning is that the sexual offences often go hand in hand with other crimes. According to the SAPS statistics, 31 murders committed were preceded by rape. In 17 cases of attempted murder, a rape charge was reported and in 120 assault cases, a rape case was also reported.

The official police statistics also show that rape often goes hand in hand with drug- and especially alcohol abuse.

In 1 089 rape cases investigated, the police established that 100 could be linked with drug usage, while in 989 cases alcohol abuse was reported.

In Limpopo, most of the rape cases (351) occurred at the residence of the perpetrator. At public spaces such as parks or recreational centres, 57 victims were raped. At prisons or holding cells, 12 victims reported a rape and at shebeens or liquor outlets, seven people were raped. Only one person reported that she had been raped at an educational institution.

Although sexual offences are extremely prevalent in the Thohoyandou area, not everyone believes that the problem is limited to this town.

Thohoyandou police station reports third most rape cases in country (From page 1) Ms Fiona Nicholson, who founded and ran the Thohoyandou Victim Empowerment Programme (TVEP) for 20 years, is convinced that the problem is underreported in many towns. “What concerns me most is the literally unbelievable lack of reporting in the Makhado district – which is even less than in the villages of Vuwani, Dzanani and Siloam,” she said. “What people don’t realise is that the SAPS performance appraisal system is directly linked to the number of cases opened, not [those] resolved. Tell me, please, how can the police reduce the num-

ber of cases reported to them, if not by sweeping them under the mat?”

Regarding the high rape stats in Thohoyandou, Nicholson believes that the TVEP managed to increase the reporting ratio, which is generally accepted as being one in nine countrywide, meaning that only one out of every nine abused women are reporting the abuse. In the Thohoyandou area, through active campaigns and counselling programmes, they managed to get more people to speak out against sexual abuse. “I see this as a ‘success indicator’ that highlights the excellent work of the TVEP,” she said.

ilar sentiment is Dr Bardwell Mufunwaini. He is a director of Munna Ndi Nnyi, an organisation that also runs programmes and speaks out against sexual abuse. He says that they are aware of cases where especially rapes are not reported to the police.

Mufunwaini says that his organisation tries to conduct workshops throughout the Vhembe area to make people aware of their rights and responsibilities. The focus is on reproductive health and how to protect women and children.

He says that, unfortunately, they battle to get sufficient funds to conduct these training sessions.

Tshimbiluni was born and bred in Musina and was highly respected all around.

“My grandfather was a loving man,” said Shoni Mbewe, one of his grandchildren. “Musina residents respected him very much. He used to spoil and shower us with love. It is really hard to believe that he is not with us anymore. It still feels like only a bad dream.”

He is survived by his wife, two children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

His funeral and burial were held on Saturday, 15 May, at Matswale.

“We really feel that the Musina we once knew is gone,” said Mr Glen Rifumuni Malungane. He is one of many residents who feel that the local and the district municipality have let them down and that service delivery is simply getting worse.

“We don’t know what has gone wrong. Only five years ago, we didn’t have water interruptions,” he said. He blamed the Vhembe District Municipality (VDM) for the water problems, saying these had escalated since the VDM had taken over this function.

Residents living near Eric Louw High School said they had been complaining and calling the relevant authorities to address the sewage blockages. Raw sewage has been flowing down the street opposite the school.

“My mother lives right in that street and for months they have been subjected to the bad smell. I called Musina Local Municipality, but was referred to the VDM. In an attempt to get the mess sorted out, I called the VDM several times, but no one picks up the calls,” said Alesia Warren.

According to Warren, the street in question is a busy one and residents usually walk up and down that street late in the day, going for exercise. Learners going to Eric Louw also use the street.

“Who is going to be responsible if these learners get sick?” asked Warren.

Gerhard Van Vuuren, another resident living close to the street, said: “This has been going on for years and the municipality is not coming up with a lasting solution. If one drives along the road, it means you are driving on sewage, leaving your vehicle smelling.”

Mbilwi teacher appear in court on charges that he had raped a learner

By Silas Nduvheni The highly esteemed Mbilwi Secondary School in Sibasa, known as one of the top-performing schools in the province, suffered more reputational damage when one of its teachers was arrested on a charge of rape.

The complaint was laid by one of the school’s pupils, who claims that she had been raped repeatedly by the teacher in 2018, when she was 17 years old. “The suspect allegedly raped the victim, who is now 20 years old, on three occasions in 2018,” said Limpopo police spokesperson Brig Motlafela Mojapelo.

The teacher had allegedly raped the girl twice at a lodge in Makhado and once at his home. On one of the occasions, he reportedly offered to assist her with extra school lessons, but instead took her to a lodge, where he allegedly raped her and then offered her R30 000 to keep silent, which she refused.

“The victim eventually

reported the rape last month (April) at the Thohoyandou Police Station. Members of the Family Violence and Sexual Offences Unit (FCS) immediately took over the case and, after intensive investigations, arrested the suspect on Friday, 14 April,” Mojapelo said.

Mr Ntshidzeni Solomon Makhuvha (50), head of department in geography at Mbilwi Secondary School, appeared in the Thohoyandou Magistrate’s Court on three counts of rape. The case was postponed to 24 May for a formal bail application.

Makhuvha’s legal representative, Advocate Ratshilumela Makhera, said his client’s bail application had already been filed, but that the prosecutor in Thohoyandou still wanted approval from the director of the prosecuting authority to centralise all three rape charges to be heard in one magistrate’s court.

“I met the suspect soon after his arrest and was shocked and worried. He denied the allegations of raping a learner, as he is a married man with

three children,” said Advocate Makhera outside the Thohoyandou Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

Re-construction thereof started three months ago, yet in the past two months, seven more accidents occurred between the D959 and the D3715 road, killing four and injuring 16 people.

The chairperson of the Zoutpansberg Development Forum, Mr Patrick Sikhutshi, again warned motorists who use the Sinthumule and Kutama road not to drink and drive. He said that drivers must always drive with extreme caution as these roads were dangerous. “Let us rather pull over and rest if we feel tired and arrive safely at our destinations,” he said.

Upon enquiry, SANRAL responded by saying that the traffic lights in question were not their responsibility. “Kindly note that the South African National Roads Agency SOC Limited (SANRAL) does not manage the operations and maintenance of traffic lights.

This function falls under the municipality’s mandate,” was SANRAL’s response.

The Makhado Municipality turned out to be unaware of this responsibility. “The robots [traffic lights] you are talking about are the competency of RAL [Road Agency Limpopo],” was Makhado municipal spokesperson Louis Bobodi’s response.

RAL was also quick to deny responsibility. “I have just verified that the road you are referring to belongs to SANRAL. I think they would be best placed to respond to you,” was the response received from Mr Maropeng Manyathela, spokesperson for the RAL when asked whether they intended to fix

the damaged traffic lights.

The Limpopo Mirror could determine, although not confirm, that the initial agreement with the Masingita Group for the upgrade of the mall stipulated that they would erect the traffic lights, after which the responsibility for the maintenance and upkeep of the traffic lights would revert to the Makhado Municipality.

Bobodi was contacted once more and asked if he was aware of this agreement, or whether he was sticking to his response that the Makhado Municipality was not responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of the traffic lights in questions. Regarding this, Bobodi responded on Tuesday by saying: “As things stand now, the robots [traffic lights] are not in our assets, but for safety purposes, the municipality is going to attend to them.”

A tribute to the late Tshidino Ndou.

When someone who matters most to me is gone, it’s natural to ask the question “why?” over and over again.

We started off as friends, little did I know that God has placed in you a brother with a golden heart. With your trademark smile; you called me “Hozhii”, and I would call you “Vho-Mulingo”, then you would start giggling or smile from ear to ear. Such was our relationship.

When I received the sad news that you are no more, I was shocked and devastated.

My friend, your untimely death left a deep pain in my heart. I want you to know that life is no longer the same without you my brother.

When we met for the first time more than a decade ago, I noticed a symbol of selfless humanity. From that

moment on, I realised that we had not one, but a few things in common ... one of these being, we liked to give a voice to the voiceless in the media space. I enjoyed watching live matches at the stadium with you ... I can, but, I wonder how it will be when I go to watch a game without you.

Vho-Mulingo, I will never get a brother and a friend who valued me like you did.

When my journalism of promoting accountability and exposing all forms of corrupt activities was criticized, when people ignored, avoided and kept a distance from me because of my work, it was you vho-Mulingo who always kept me in your inner circle. You were a true brother to me.

Whenever, I was in a real fix, you were always there to extend a helping hand or give moral support. There are most instances where you encouraged me to keep on working very hard, from the days when I was still working for the Limpopo Mirror newspaper more

than a decade ago.

We had a give-and-take relationship whereby, when I landed a job in Pretoria, you would offer to help with transport whenever I was stranded, and I would also help out whenever you needed help. You have done a lot for your community ... in fact, you have played your part in moving this country forward. Your legacy speaks volumes. You were wellknown, not only here at your village, but at a national level as well. We are indeed proud of you. In my respectful view, my dear brother, you deserve to be honoured by our local council if not the district municipality. In his loving memory, it will be an honour if one of our higher education institutions (Tshisimani College or Univen) were to name one of their buildings after Tshidino Ndou.

You were very unique and innovative. In our district, you are the only one I know who was able to successfully make those horizontal moves from stage performance to working behind the camera

as a producer and editor, to mention but a few. My friend, you were a jack of all trades. You were a peace-loving person, who treated everyone, me included, with dignity and respect.

Vho-Mulingo, it is a pity that I am saying thank you for the very last time when you are no longer with us.

Mudau was killed after his wife, Winnie Ntanganedzeni Nemaranzhe (34), had allegedly phoned him to bring bread and pocket money for his kids.

He was shot at the gate of his house.

Nemaranzhe is accused of hiring hitmen to kill her husband. Her co-accused, Tshililo Madega (31), Tshivhangwaho Mudau (46), and Takalani Nemutandani (33), face multiple charges of murder, robbery

Blind farmer gets honoured by Dzingahe community

Living with a disability does not necessarily mean one is unable to do anything. At least, this is how Mr Maanda Michael Mafhege, a blind farmer from Vondwe village near Dzingahe outside Thohoyandou, interprets the situation.

Mafhege (44) was recently honoured by the Dzingahe Community with a certificate of recognition after he had donated the produce grown on his four-hectare orchard in Dzingahe to organisations for the disabled, at funerals, and among the local community.

Ms Marubini Munyangane, one of the community members, described Mafhege as a dedicated and hardworking farmer in the village and said that his contribution to food security had to be recognised and acknowledged.

“Little did we know that, when he came to ask for the land to develop his orchard, he would give back to the community what he has produced,” said Munyangane. “The village communities want to give him recognition for this while he is still alive.”

At the same time, they also voiced their concerns about thieves who steal Mafhege’s crops. “Stealing from a blind farmer … They should be ashamed of themselves and we urge those responsible to stop it,” Munyangane said.

Mafhege first started farming in the backyard of his home in Vondwe when he was a young boy, and today grows, among other things, butternuts, maize, tomatoes, sugar beans and cabbages.

“I was not born blind. The blindness just suddenly came while I was in the 11th Grade in 1997. When I went to the doctor, I was diagnosed with glaucoma – an eye condition that damages the optic nerve and causes blindness, and could never see again since then. But I thank God that I never let my disability worsen my circumstances,” he said.

Mafhege said he had never begged anybody for food, because he got up in the morning and did things for himself, despite being blind.

Aside from the recent recognition certificate he got from the Dzingahe communities, he has also won several accolades from the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development for being a dedicated farmer, despite his blindness.

He has, however, encountered his own challenges brought on by the Covid-19 pandemic, which have hampered his production. He wishes to make an appeal to anyone who can help him erect a barbed wire to prevent thieves from stealing his crops.

Art & Entertainment DJ Mufunzi’s dream finally becomes reality

By Maanda Bele Performing with one of the country’s most sought-after DJs has been a lifelong dream of local MC and DJ Manu Mufunzi.

While he grew up, Livhuwani Emmanuel Lekondeni (35) used to daydream about meeting his idol, DJ Tira, and perhaps learning a few tricks of the trade from him. He never thought that this dream would one day become a reality. And then it happened.

“It was a Saturday afternoon, and I was just relaxing with friends after a performance the previous night when I received a call that my idol was in town,” he remembers.

“The call was from business owner of the Marshall Cafe, Robert Mashau, who not only invited

me to the show but asked me to introduce DJ Tira on stage. I could not believe it was happening. Just imagine meeting your idol, introducing him on stage, and finally performing with him!

This is the day that I will cherish for the rest of my life. Performing with such a great DJ before that wonderful audience was unbelievable,” he said.

As a young boy, he used to sneak out from home to follow DJ Khoro to his performances. The boy from Itsani outside Thohoyandou would assist in connecting the sound system, and this served as a good start for him in learning the business.

Today, Kubudu, as Mufunzi is affectionately known in entertainment circles, is a celebrated and sought-after master of ceremo-

nies, and no function is quite complete without him. He is also a well-known DJ, performing under his stage name, DJ Mufunzi, and has performed at many events. The man also juggles his own business and is a pastor at his church.

Mufunzi said that performing with DJ Tira had boosted his career as DJ immensely. “Meeting and performing with DJ Tira have greatly increased my territory and popularity as a DJ,” he said.

“I thank DJ Tira for the valuable tips he gave me, and of course this would not have happened had it not been for Robert Mashau.

Also, it would just not be right if I leave out to thank DJ Khoro and Ndivhuho Netshitongwe for having selflessly mentored me,” Mufunzi concluded.

Gundolawe releases much-awaited single

Well do they remember a five-year-old girl from Mphathele Primary Gundolawe Ramudzuli has finally released her muchawaited single.

Since that historic day so long ago, music lovers have been waiting with great anticipation for Gundolawe’s angelic voice to resurface.

The saying “good things are worth waiting for” seemed relevant as Gundolawe re-entered the gospel scene with a powerful single, titled Dzinani la Yehova, which in Tshivenda means ‘In the name of Jehovah’.

“I still cannot believe that it is my voice on that song,” a bubbly Gundolawe said. “I get emotional whenever I listen to it on radio and testimonies from people make me want to thank the Lord even more. This is the breakthrough I have been waiting for, yet it never crossed my mind that my entry to the industry would be this big.”

The single has taken the industry by storm, enjoying a lot of airplay on radio stations before its official release on 14 May. Produced by a renowned drummer, Phindulo “Poks” Mudzuli, the song has been receiving positive reviews from gospel lovers who have been praising its immaculate arrangement and Gundolawe’s anointed voice.

The 27-year-old Gundolawe, who is an employee at one of the biggest grocery chain stores in the country, was modest when asked about the resounding success that her debut single has attained.

Although her talent was detected as a child, Gundolawe said her love of music was fuelled by her late cousin, gospel music icon Mpho Regalo, whom she idolised.

“During school holidays I would visit my aunt and Mpho would be singing,” an emotional Gundolawe remembers. “I would attend

his shows, and from there on I was certain that I wanted to sing.

He encouraged me to follow my passion, and I wish he was here to witness what God is doing.”

Gundolawe was born and raised at Mukula village and now resides at Khubvi village. In 2014, she joined gospel group Vhaneiwa Heavenly Voices as a backing vocalist.

She was discovered by a customer who heard her singing at her work and inquired about her talent. The customer turned out to be Robert Netshiunda of Mukurob Music and, as they say, the rest is history.

“I will be balancing my work schedule and limited tours as I aim to promote my single locally, due to Covid-19 restrictions,” she said.

Ms Sharon Ravele, Phalaphala FM’s station manager, said that they were excited when they looked back to when they started broadcasting in Tshivenda on the then Radio Venda in 1965.

During all these years, the station had had a hugely positive impact on the community.

They also started several community welfare campaigns, such as the donation of school shoes and books, sanitary pads, visiting senior traditional leaders as well as the building of houses for needy communities.

“We have a good relationship with our listeners and engage with them often. We made it easier for them to reach us, unlike back in the day when they had to write letters to communicate with us. We also have a social media platform that shows our activities and events, and have an annual overseas tour, which has been in existence for more than 24 years.”

She said that the station continued to respect the listeners by giving them more local music, entertainment, and information. “Next month, you will see more changes.”

The station is celebrating 56 years of broadcasting in Tshivenda. “We pride ourselves on the station as Phalaphala FM continues to source news and have different programmes to educate and entertain the listeners,” Ravele said. “We thank the leadership and the entire Phalaphala FM team for their contribution towards the success of the station. We also thank the station listeners for their support, because the station is what it is today because of their continuous support.”

Onndwela wants to use beauty pageants to spread her message about mental health

This piece of wisdom comes from Onndwela Makananise (20) from Louis Trichardt, a finalist in the Miss Teen South Africa 2021 pageant.

“I joined beauty pageants after watching Miss South Africa, Tamaryn Green, competing at the Miss Universe [pageant] in 2018,” she said. “I was inspired by how proud she was of her country and by her advocacy. She made me realise that our experiences can influence how we behave and how we see life.”

Onndwela then went on a mission to make her voice heard. She advocates the fight against mental health problems to remove the harmful stigma surrounding them.

“Beauty pageants give me a platform to speak about things that matter and need to be spoken about,” she said. “After watching as many pageants as I could, I took part in my first pageant – Miss International Princess in 2019 - and ended up

She can sell her work countrywide, even beyond the borders of South Africa, via courier services.

“Today we are so lucky to be able to market on social media and maximise our products,” she said. “My work is viable. I’ve even couriered to our neighbouring countries like Lesotho, Botswana, and Tanzania.”

“That was where I got the idea to start my own business, making beaded art. Many people, both lecturers and students, showed interest in my colourful, beaded items,” she said. “Some bought from the selection which I had, while others placed orders with specifications on how they wanted their products to be. I realised then that that was a trade I could surely follow. But it took time to get there.”

When she was still not fully functional in 2018, moving forward at a snail’s pace, Unarine’s friend, Muofhe Sengani, prodded her to register and open a business. “She said she could see that I was talented and that I should take my talent to the next level. And I did exactly that.”

She named her business Beads by Una. Unarine has found joy in the beaded-art trade. To her this work is a kind of therapy.

“Government can’t maintain children having children,” says Dep Minister

By Silas Nduvheni Deputy Minister of Social Development Ms Hendrietta Bogapane-Zulu spoke out against teenage pregnancies during the International Family Day celebrations held on Saturday, 15 May, and said that government could not afford to maintain children who were parents of children.

Bogapane-Zulu, who was joined by the MEC for Social Development in Limpopo, Ms Nkakareng Rakgoale, the executive mayor of Vhembe District, Cllr Dowelani Nenguda, and Thovhele Ndivheni II Nesengani, addressed communities at the Ha-Nesengani royal council near Vuwani.

“We are worried about chil-

dren having children. It means we have mothers and fathers who are still children themselves,” said Bogapane-Zulu.

“We need to plan our families.

We urge young girls and boys to think twice before having children. Family planning at clinics is free of charge.”

She thanked the elderly people who attended the celebration and said that families could not be complete without mothers and fathers as they played an important role in raising their children with a sense of responsibility and teaching them good morals.

Some learners from the Tshilidzini Special School in the Vuwani area, which caters for disabled children, were invited to join in the day’s celebration.

Representing fellow principals, the principal of Masisi Primary School, Avheani Mudzielwana, said Mudzuli was an embodiment of dedication and an ambassador of the teaching profession who had served the community with passion.

“He was a great colleague who was readily available for any assistance.

Although he is retiring today, we will continue to consult him whenever we need advice because he knows all corners of the teaching

profession. His dedication and long service will encourage us to serve our country with loyalty.”

Domina Munzhelele is a wellknown author of books and radio dramas, who was taught by Mudzuli at Mutele Primary School. He said: “He had always been a smart dresser who taught us to stay clean at all times. He enforced punctuality upon us and encouraged us to love education. Today we are independent and able to develop our communities because of his contributions.”

In response, Mudzuli said he was sad and happy at the same time.

“I am sad because I am leaving the kids that I love so much, but I am happy that I am going for a well-deserved rest. I was born to be a teacher, and I will continue to give young teachers advice whenever possible. I have played my part, and I have no doubt that whoever takes my baton will continue to assist our community to get better education.

Musina councillor keeps to promise to buy uniforms for 50 learners Musina News “If all community leaders were like Cllr Phillemon Taxi Nare, the world would have been a better place to stay.” These are the words of Jeanet Moyana, an educator at Rixile Primary School in Musina. This comes after Nare has fulfilled his promise of buying school uniforms for 50 learners.

Each year, for the past four years, Nare has bought full uniforms for 10 disadvantaged learners in his ward (Ward 3 in Musina Local Municipality). Last week, Nare sealed his

obligation by providing five learners with full uniforms at Rixile Primary School. He will provide five more learners with full uniforms at Musina High School in a few days’ time.

“When I became ward councillor four years ago, I made an undertaking that I will use my own money to buy uniforms for indigent learners in the two schools that are found in my ward,” said Nare.

Nare said that restoring the dignity of learners, so that they could concentrate on their studies, was important.

“When the child does not have a uniform, his or her studies are affected negatively because

their self-esteem becomes low, thereby leading to poor performance,” he said.

Brenda Mpofu is one of the parents whose child, Rofhiwa, received a uniform from Cllr Nare. She said: “As an unemployed parent, I was unable to buy a full uniform for my child, and Cllr Nare came to my rescue at the right time,” she said.

Kateko Ndou (11), who put on her new uniform immediately, was over the moon. She said: “I am very happy that I have received my uniform today. This will encourage me to study hard, so that I can pass with flying colours at the end of the year.”

Though Mashudu receives the R350 Social Relief Distress Grant, he feels this is not enough to live by. He is saving the little money he gets from their fruit sales to further his education.

Qualifying asylum seekers with visas or refugee status can now request an extension of their visa validity online, instead of having to go physically to a refugee reception office.

This follows an announcement made by the Minister of Home Affairs, Dr Pakeshi Aaron Motsoaledi, who called on clients to renew their expired visas and refugee status online before the deadline of 30 June 2021.

The online extension services started on 15 April 2021, and were implemented to limit the spread of Covid-19.

The Musina Municipality has made R4 million available to assist indigent community members in the coming financial year.

Currently, the municipality is providing more than 3 000 beneficiaries with free electricity, water, sewage- and refuse-removal services.

Musina Mayor Mihloti Muhlope has called upon indigent community members to visit identified registration points to register for these free municipal services during weekdays between 07:00 and 16:00. Bergvlam soccer team parade in new colours

Bergvlam Primary School’s soccer team are parading in brand-new kit, thanks to the Nedbank branch in the Thohoyandou Game Centre.

The branch manager, Mr Sammy Munyai, handed over soccer equipment, including a soccer kit, soccer net and training cones valued at R52 000, to the school during a ceremony at the school premises last Friday morning.

Mr Munyai said that the donation was part of his bank’s give-back programme that they had started some years ago. According to him, the bank identified needy communities and non-profit organisations through the programme and assi1sted them to realize their dreams.

Mr Munyai further stated that his bank had recently built an old age home at Tshififi village outside Thohoyandou.

He added that the process of building a community hall at Ngwenani Ya Themeli village was underway. Mr Munyai said that they had planned to donate building structures to needy

communities around Vhembe District over the past year, but the programme had been halted by the State President’s pronouncement of a national lockdown early last year.

Mr Munyai appealed to other capable companies and individuals to lend a helping hand to needy communities,

Maximum points for Manghena Love & Peace

By Frank Mavhungu Manghena Love and Peace collected the maximum points at the expense of Shikundu Mountain Bombers, whom they narrowly beat 1-0 in their Collins Chabane LFA League match at the Manghena Grounds on Saturday.

Love and Peace made their intentions clear from the first whistle. They initiated several promising moves from behind within the first 20 minutes of play. Realizing that the home side were all over them, Mountain Bombers relaxed at the back and waited for the opposition strikers to invade their territory.

Love and Peace came close to scoring in the 11th minute. Their overlapping midfielder, Akani Sithole, went loose after receiving a beautiful pass from Winston Gezani in the 25-metre area.

Instead of relaxing on the ball and trying other possible ways, Sithole caused an upset by shooting aimlessly from inside the box.

Sithole’s attempt seemed to be a wake-up call to the Mountain Bombers. They regrouped from behind, with their midfielders dishing out some telling passes to the frontrunners.
