Second round in name fight to begin after minister approves Makhado as new name for Louis Trichardt

By Linda van der Westhuizen The Limpopo Geographical Names Committee (LGNC) warned this week that the public and media should immediately stop using the name Louis Trichardt, following the Minister of Arts and Culture Paul Mashatile’s announcement that the name Makhado has been approved.

The name Makhado was published the first time in the government gazette in June 2003. By law, a period of 30 days is granted for objections. Objections were received and eventually the case was heard in the High Court in Pretoria in August 2005, with Judge MK Legodi ruling that Louis Trichardt’s name was Makhado.

That was in September, coinciding with the jubilant unveiling of the statue of King Ramabulana Makhado at the tourism in­ formation centre in Louis Trichardt. In the meantime, the Chairpersons Association (CA) was granted leave to appeal against

the judgment and succeeded to win their appeal case in Bloemfontein. The five appeal court judges set aside the name change in March 2007, due to insufficient consultation.

Hence the name of the town was Louis Trichardt again. Following this ruling, the Makhado Municipality restarted the process and presented the name Makhado to the Limpopo Geographical Names Committee (LGNC). LGNC was satisfied with the process of consultations and re­ commended the name change to the South African Geographical Names Council.

Now that the minister has approved and published the name Makhado in the Government Gazette of 14 October, the LGNC wants an immediate enforcing of the use of the name. “The committee wants to make it clear that members of the public and media must stop using the old name Louis Trichardt to use the new re-approved Makhado...

“The committee will come with a series

of meetings to enforce the implementation of the new name in order for the public to stop using the old name, which residents of the Makhado area feel is on no account associated with them, but the old regime.

The committee will address the critical issue of changing all signage around the province. The committee will engage the department of Roads and Transport together with Makhado Municipality to fast track this process of changing signs to avoid confusing people,” stated LGNC spokesperson Mr Peter Moruthane on October 17 in a press release.

The question now, however, is whether the LGNC is jumping the gun with respect to the use of the name Makhado, since the 30 days objection period to the name change only expires on 14 November?

“It is totally unlawful to start enforcing the name at this stage,” said attorney An­ dré Naudé, chairperson of the CA. (Contd on P2)

SA deports 631 Zim illegal immigrants South Africa has started deporting undocumented Zimbabweans, with more that 600 deportees having arrived in their home country through the Beit Bridge Border Post on Wednesday and Thursday last week.

The first batch of 261 illegal immigrants, mostly men, arrived at the Beit Bridge border in four luxurious buses on Wednesday. The second group of 370 was brought back home on Thursday.

According to South African Home Affairs officials who were escorting them, the deportees were the first group of undocumented Zimbabweans to be deported. The South African government recently announced that it would resume the deportation of Zimbabwe-

ans who failed to regularise their stay in that country during the recent documentation exercise.

“We brought a total of 261 deportees, most of whom are ex-convicts, including those who were recently rounded up around the Johannesburg area,” said an SA Home Affairs official, who declined to be named.

The undocumented Zimbab­ weans were temporarily kept at Lindela Detention Centre outside Johannesburg. When Limpopo Mirror visited Beit Bridge Border Post, our reporter observed that some illegal cross-border transporters had already started touting for “clients” as the deportees shouted through the windows of their buses in response to the transporters.

“Let’s meet at the local Caltex service station and we will help you to cross back to South Africa. That is an easy task for us,” shouted one illegal crossborder transport operator.

Most of them charge between R300 and R800 to facilitate smooth passage of undocumented Zimbabweans into South Africa.

The Zimbabwean assistant regional immigration manager at Beit Bridge Border Post, Mrs Tamari Shadaya, confirmed that they had received the deportees “We received the deportees and our officials vetted them before they proceeded to the local International Organisation for Migration (IOM) centre. We are expecting more deportations during the course of the month,” she said.

VV neem weer die strydbyl op oor naam Die Voorsittersvereniging (VV) gaan die tweede naamsverandering van Louis Trichardt na Makhado teenstaan.

Dit volg nadat die Minister van Kuns en Kultuur, mnr. Paul Mashatile, die naam Makhado as nuwe naam van Louis Trichardt op 14 Oktober in die Staatskoerant gepubliseer het.

Die VV sê dat die naam Makhado stil-stil in die staatskoerant gepubliseer is, nadat hulle uitdruklik in briefwisseling met die vorige minister, Lulu Xingwana, asook met Mashatile versoek het dat hulle [die VV] daarvan in kennis gestel moet word indien die minister ‘n nuwe naam sou publiseer. Twee vas ná moord op Potchefstroom Slegs vier dae na die moord op oud-inwoner Pietz Bezuidenhout van Potchefstroom kon die polisie daarin slaag om twee verdagtes te arresteer.

Die 36-jarige Bezuidenhout, wat in 1993 by Hoërskool Louis Trichardt gematrikuleer het en wie se pa en suster steeds in die Soutpansberg woonagtig is, is Saterdag, 8 Oktober, koelbloedig voor sy huis in Potchefstroom met messe doodgesteek.

Karen Terdoux het Dinsdag bevestig dat twee mans op 12 Oktober in verband met die moord aangekeer is. Die twee mans, Kagiso Tiba (24) en Letlhogoholo Moretlwe (25), het op 14 Oktober in die distrikshof op Potchefstroom verskyn op ‘n klag van moord. Beide het aansoek om borg gedoen, maar die Staat het hul borg teengestaan. Die twee sou teen druktyd op Woensdag, 19 Oktober, weer in die hof verskyn om nog ‘n aansoek om borg te bring.

“Hierdie is glad nie ‘n ontsluiting van die sinergie of samewerking tussen die kulturele groepe nie.

Die man op straat het nooit gekom met die behoefte dat die dorp se naam moet verander nie. Hierdie is ‘n polities-gedrewe proses, wat nie in landsbelang geskied nie, maar vir eie posisionele gewin gedryf word,” sê Naudé.

Mashatile is gevra vir sy redes vir die naams­ verandering en of die VV se briewe ontvang en beantwoord is, maar sy kantoor het by monde van die adjunk-direkteur van kommunikasie, me. Premi Appalraju, gesê dat dit nie vir hulle moontlik sal wees om hierdie week te antwoord nie.

Die Limpopo Geografiese Naamskomitee (LGNK) was egter vinnig om te reageer op die naamsverandering. Hulle het hul tevredenheid met die konsultasieproses uitgespreek. Naudé sê egter dat die “sogenaamde” konsultasieproses hierdie keer nog meer blatante foute bevat as die eerste keer.

“Ons het ‘n beter saak hierdie keer, omdat daar nog meer administratiewe ongeregtigheid gepleeg is as met die vorige keer. Sekere uitgesoekte groepe is gekonsulteer oor wat die naam moet wees, asof dit ‘n feit is dat die naam moet verander,” sê Naudé.

Naudé sê dat hulle vasberade is om reg en geregtigheid te laat geskied.

“Ons kan nie toelaat dat die goeie gesindheid en samewerking wat daar onder die kultuurgroepe bestaan, bederf word deur politici wat ons ter wille van eie gewin wil polariseer nie. Die naamsaak is deel van ‘n groter prentjie. Ons kan nie ongeregtigheid toelaat nie, want dan is die volgende stap dat alle grondwetlike regte vertrap word,” sê Naudé.

Essential service staff abandon posts Wait until Monday … This was the message to farmers along the Vivo road when they were struck by a power interruption on Sunday afternoon.

According to Ms Estelle Kemp, who farms about 45km from Louis Trichardt along this stretch of road, the power went off at around 17:00. Being dependent on electricity for their livelihood and safety, they tried in vain to contact the Makhado Municipality’s after-hours call centre in Eltivillas, Louis Trichardt. Twenty calls later and they were still no closer to an answer.

When Kemp eventually got hold of someone at the electri­ city department on a different number, they were informed that the call centre staff had closed up shop and gone home. The message to them was to wait until Monday, when the municipality was open again.

The call centre staff apparently abandoned their posts out of protest with regard to overtime payment. They deserted their posts, despite the fact that the call centre is an “essential service”, meaning that, by law, the office should be manned at all times.

Municipal spokesperson Mr Louis Bobodi on Tuesday confirmed the incident.

“The call centre was left unmanned as from 16:45 on Sunday until Monday morning. We do not know the exact reasons, but we are busy investigating as to what had happened to the person who was on duty, and appropriate action will be taken, based on the findings,” Bobodi said.

As for the farmers, power supply was eventually restored by 21:30 on Sunday, although one phase was still out and was only repaired on Monday.

Oud-inwoner ná kort siekbed oorlede ‘n Oud-inwoner van Louis Trichardt, oom Hennie Roos (83), is op Sondag, 16 Oktober oorlede.

Wyle Oom Hennie was sedert 1965 ‘n inwoner van Louis Trichardt en was vir baie jare werksaam as stasievoorman by Transnet hier. Na sy aftrede was hy ook vir ‘n geruime tyd by Werda Motors werksaam.

In 2004 verhuis Oom Hennie na Krugersdorp waar hy by sy een seun, Johan, gaan woon het. Hy is op 27 September in die Netcare Krugersdorp Hospitaal opgeneem met longontstekeking, waarna sy toestand versleg het. Oom Hennie is gebore op 13 Junie 1928 en was vir grootste deel van sy lewe

in die Soutpansberg-distrik woonagtig. Hy was getroud met tannie Hansie Roos, wat baie jare werksaam was by Limpopo Melkery. Tannie Hansie is in 1997 oorlede. Oom Hennie laat sy vier seuns, Henk, Cobus, Johan en Christo agter, asook nege kleinkinders en ses agterkleinkinders. Sy teraardebestelling vind plaas op Vrydag, 21 Oktober om 10:30 by die Louis Trichardt begraafplaas. ‘n Gedenkdiens sal daarna vir hom om 11:00 vanuit die Hervormde Kerk Louis Trichardt-gemeente gehou word, onder leiding van ds. Phillip Horn.

Hier staan Oom Danie by sy sesde en laaste olienhoutskinkbord wat hy ter fondsinsameling gemaak het vir die kerk om uitgeloot te word. Die wenner van dié skinkbord, mev. Dihan van der Merwe, het Sondag die skinkbord in ontvangs geneem. Dihan was 10 jaar oud toe die kerk in 1961 ingewy is. Sy en haar ma mev. D. J. Louis Trichardt-gemeente nooi ‘n ieder en ‘n elk uit na hul Verjaar Basaar op 4 en 5 November.

Die basaar vorm deel van die gemeente se 95ste verjaarsdagviering wat afskop op Sondag, 16 Oktober.

Stalletjies sluit in gebak, groente en vrugte, hamburgers en worsbroodjies, jaffels en vetkoeke, kerrie-en-rys, koeldrank, ‘n koffiekroeg en restaurant, nagereg, pannekoek, pap-en-kaiings, stokworse, vleis, biltong en droëwors. Daar is ook stalletjies met boeke, CD’s, DVD’s, asook ‘n platestalletjie, witolifanttafel, uitsaaistalletjie en plantestalletjie, met ‘n tombolatafel, springkastele, speletjies en vermaak vir die jongklomp.

Buiten hiervoor is daar ook ‘n armdruk-, boerewors- en fotoraaikompetisie, asook hoede en serpe-strikdaskompetisie, skyfskietkompetisie en blaaspypkompetisie.

“Ons onderneem om ons produkte teen onoortreflike pryse aan te bied, siende dat alle pryse gewoonlik teen die einde van die jaar die hoogte inskiet en ons almal dan die sak behoorlik moet skud ten einde te verseker dat ons `n behoorlike en vreugdevolle Kersvakansie kan geniet.

Kerk Louis Trichardt-gemeente bied as deel van hul “Verjaar Basaar” op 5 November ‘n hoede en serpe/strikdas kompetisie aan.

Die basaar skop egter reeds op 4 November om 13:00 af.

Inskrywing vir die kompetisie is gratis en kan gedoen word vanaf Vrydag 14:00 tot Saterdag 12:30 by die fotoraai-stalletjie.

“U kan deelneem in die kategorieë vir laerskoolkinders, hoërskoolkinders, volwassenes en bejaardes. Die Evas neem deel in die hoede en serpe afdeling en die Adams in die hoede en strikdas afdeling. Slegs eerste plekke sal toege­ ken word volgens die temas Verspot, Eksentriek en die Sixties,” sê die gemeente. Aantreklike pryse op die spel.

• STAP VIR BYBELS Hoërskool Eric

Louw in Musina nooi inwoners uit om op 5 November saam met hulle te kom stap vir Bybels.

Die stap vind plaas op die MAC Rugbyvelde en skoolvelde en duur vanaf 14:00 tot 20:00, weens die hitte. Toegang behels ‘n donasie aan Bybelverspreiding, terwyl spanne teen R100 (ongeveer tien stappers per span) ingeskryf kan word.

Daar sal hope aktiwiteite en vermaak vir oud en jonk wees, met genoeg kosstalletjies om van te kies en te keur.

“Skryf nou jou boerdery, besigheid of familiespan in en toon so julle verbintenis tot Bybelverspreiding, of kry ‘n stalletjie om jou besigheid en handewerk te bemark,” nooi die skool.

Die Bosveld Jagters- en Wildbewaringsvereniging het tydens hul jaareindfunksie op 15 Oktober hul top senior manskuts vir die afgelope jaar met trofeë bekroon. Hugenote-veiling lok self bieërs vanaf Engeland Met die eerste produksieveiling van Koperkop Hugenote van Henk en Gerda van Rensburg van Dendron op 7 Oktober was daar ongekende belangstelling, wat gelei het tot hoë pryse vir beide bulle en vroulike diere.

Kopers vanuit die hele Limpopo provinsie, sowel as kopers so ver as Lindley en

Warden vanuit die Vrystaat, het vir die veiling geregistreer. Tydens die veiling was daar selfs telefoniese bieëry vanuit London, Engeland.

Altesaam 22 bulle is verkoop teen ‘n uitstekende gemiddelde prys van R29 200, met die hoogste prys van R66 000 wat betaal is. Nog twee bulle is ook verkoop

teen R50 000 elk. Agtien-maand-oue stoetverse is verkoop teen ‘n gemiddeld van R11 600, met ‘n hoogste prys van R15 500 wat behaal is. Vroulike graad koeie is verkoop teen ‘n gemiddeld van R11 000 en graad verse teen ’n gemiddeld van R8 125. Die veiling is aangebied deur Vleissentraal Bosveld.

Tydens die vergadering, wat by die Mopane Boe­ revereniging se saal aangebied is, is mnr. Stephen Hoffman herverkies as voorsitter van die SDLU, met mnr. Fritz Ahrens as ondervoorsitter. Die ander lede van die dagbestuur is mnre. Doors le Roux, Japie van der Goot en Fanus Viviers.

Die kommoditeitsverteenwoordigers vir 2010 is mnre. he soul gets into a place in this lonely canyon where it has to go alone. It learns, more than ever, the personality of God, of Jesus and of the Holy Spirit.

The soul comes into deeper union with Jesus Christ than ever, and furthermore, while walking into that valley the soul gets into the place where it feeds more on the inspired word of God. The rod and the staff, is the Word of God. Heb. 4:12. For the Word of God is living and active. As you go through the valley you are not feeding on the tender grass, you have gotten beyond that. You now have the staff to walk with. The walking stick is God’s Word, and you draw your bread and water from the walking stick, the rod.

“Your rod and Your staff they comfort me.” It is in these testings and these trials and these strange experiences you go through, that you are driven to your Bible, and you search the Bible to find a parallel case with yours, and you feed on the inspired Word of God. You draw your nourishment, not from the past, but from the Word of God. When will I get out of that place, some may be asking? Some stay a few months, and some longer. You get through when the pure Word of God becomes your soul food. When you get through, suddenly, you are led out into a large place.

Alles op die spel tydens MTN-tydren Die eerste MTN PolokwaneTydren wat dié naweek in die Limpopo-Provinsie plaasvind, sal die gordyn oor een van die taaiste Suid-Afrikaanse tydrenkampioenskappe in baie jare laat sak.

Na sewe rondtes staan vier jaers en drie navigators wat almal in die voorste Super 2000-klas vir vierwielaangedrewe twee-liter motors deelneem, ‘n wiskundige kans om hul onderskeie kampioenskappe te wen. Met ‘n maksimum van 25 punte wat vir ‘n oorwinning ingepalm kan word en deelnemers wat van hul swakste resultaat van die seisoen ontslae moet raak, kan die finale uitslag verskeie vorms aanneem.

Zimbabwe se Conrad Rautenbach (Green Fuel-Ford Fiesta) lei die jaerskampioenskap, met ‘n totaal van 125 punte na sewe renne wat tot dusver plaasgevind het en sonder dat hy van sy swakste stel punte ontslae geraak het.

Hy het ‘n voorsprong van nege punte bo Mark Cronje (SasolFord Fiesta) en die verdedigende kampioen, Enzo Kuun (BP-Volk-

swagen Polo). Johnny Gemmell (Castrol-Toyota Auris) is vierde, 23 punte agter Rautenbach.

Al die kampioenskapmededingers sal vir niks minder as die maksimum hoeveelheid punte dié naweek mik nie. Hulle sal egter hul storie moet ken, aangesien daar ten minste vier ander mededingers is wat in staat is om die laaste tydren te wen.

Leeroy Poulter en Elvene Coetzee (Castrol-Toyota Auris) kan reeds ‘n sege agter hul name skryf nadat hulle die Sasol-Tydren in April gewen het. Die voormalige kampioene en BP-Volkswagen-spanmaats, Hergen Fekken/Pierre Arries en Jan Habig/Robert Paisley, het nie die beste seisoen beleef nie en sal vir ‘n oorwinning mik.

Charl Wilken en Greg Godrich (Basil Read/bizhub-Ford Fiesta) het al naby aan ‘n oorwinning gekom en het twee keer tweede geëindig, maar hulle kon twee renne nie voltooi nie en dit het hul kanse op die kampioenskap ‘n knou gegee.

In die kampioenskap vir

tweewielaangedrewe motors in die Super 1600- en Super 1400-klasse heers daar ‘n tweestryd tussen die broer- en suster-span, Christoff en Celeste Snyders (S1600-Sabertek-VW Polo) wat 128 punte het en die voormalige kampioene, Craig Trott en Robbie Coetzee (TotalToyota RunX), wat 10 punte agter hulle is. Beide spanne het bestendig podiumposisies aangeteken, met die Snyderse wat drie keer gewen het.

Die tydren begin en eindig elk van die twee dae by die Polokwane Polisieklub, oorkant die Peter Mokabastadion, wat ook as die tydrenhoofkantoor en die mediasentrum sal dien. Die eerste motor sal Saterdag om 07:00 afgesit word en die dag se aksie sal oor nege trajekte, met ‘n totaal van 127 kilometer, plaasvind. Die eerste motor sal ongeveer 16:00 by die einde wees.

Die tydren sal Sondag om 06:00 hervat word en sal korter wees om teen ongeveer 11:00 en sewe trajekte, met ‘n totaal van 77,30 kilometer, te eindig.

Die Louis Trichardt 4x4-klub het die afgelope naweek hul 4x4 Gruisgat-uitdaging aangebied.

Jongduifveiling lewer ‘n rekord omset Die Hangklip Posduifklub op Louis Trichardt se jaarlikse jongduifveiling het Saterdag, 8 Oktober, plaasgevind en was ‘n reuse sukses. ‘n Rekord omset van ongeveer R151 000 is behaal met die

dui­we wat op die veiling aangebied was.

Die geld sal aangewend word as prysgeld wat verdeel sal word tussen die vier wedvlugte wat volgende jaar plaasvind. Die eerste 10 plekke van elke wedv-

lug sal prysgeld wen.

Die voorsitter van die klub, Nico Bezuidenhout, het almal be­dank wat ‘n bydrae gelewer het tot die veiling en vir Gerhard Bezuidenhout, wat kosteloos as afslaer opgetree het.

Die nuwe wêreldkampioen in boogskiet is ‘n Soutpansberger!

Pieter Leonard van Louis Trichardt is die beste boogskutter in die AMBL (Adult Male Bowhunt­ er Limited)-klas in die wêreld, nadat hy goud losgeskiet het tydens die Wêreld Binnens­h uise Boogskietkompetisie wat vanaf 3 tot 7 Oktober by die UP sportsaal in Pre­ toria aangebied is. Met sy gemiddelde punt van 286 uit ‘n moontlike 300 het hy met al die skuts in die “beperkte” klas afgereken. Die beperkte klas beteken dat die skut slegs die vingers gebruik. In die onbeperkte klas word daar met snellers en te-­­­­­­ l­e­­skope geskiet. Altesaam 260 skuts uit 14 lande het aan die kompetisie deelgeneem.

In September vanjaar is Pieter as Afrika-kampioen in sy boogskietklas gekroon. Hy skiet al sowat 20 jaar en het reeds in 1997 ‘n silwer medalje verwerf in ‘n wêreld skietkompetisie wat op die plaas Muthamba buite Louis Trichardt gehou is. Na ‘n stil periode waarin hy nie mededingend deel­ geneem het nie, het Pieter in 2009 verras deur ‘n nuwe Suid-Afrikaanse rekord op te stel. Hy is ook gekies vir die Proteaspan wat in 2010 in Duitsland gaan skiet het, waar hy ’n silwer medalje gewen het.

Eggenote Christelle bewonder Pieter se deurset­ tingsvermoë en vasbyt met min oefentyd tot sy beskikking. “Maar dit is sy goeie sportmangees wat my die meeste tref,” sê Christelle.

Pieter het ook ‘n passie om jongmense te leer skiet. Sy tienerdogter, Gerda, was in 2009 en 2010 Suid-Afrikaanse kampioen in haar klas.

Nog al die jare skiet Pieter met ‘n Hoyt-kragboog, wat hy stabiel en betroubaar vind. Nou is hy egter lus vir ‘n nuwe uitdaging.

“Ek dink ek is nou klaar kragboog geskiet. Ek wil nou die tradisionele lang­ boog aanpak,” sê Pieter.

Dit is ‘n gewone boog met

geen hulpmiddels nie - daar is dit slegs die skut se vingers, die boog, snaar en pyl. Daar word gesê dat die lang­ boogskuts baie geduldige mense is. “Ek moet sê, boogskiet het my ook rustiger gemaak en geleer om kalm te bly,” sê Pieter.

Boogskutter Pieter Leonard is die nuwe wêreldkampioen in die AMBL (Adult Male Bowhunter Limited)-klas.
