Hy was outgoing en avontuurlustig. Hy het gelag en gedans. Dit was nie ‘n partytjie as Sakkie nie daar was nie. Hy was

South Africa tightens its border controls through BMA By Bernard Chiguvare The South African government has come up with a new approach to tighten security at all

ployed to identified, vulnerable segments along the borderline to enhance the country’s development by directing people who want to enter or leave South Africa to the official ports of entry. The Minister of Home Affairs, Dr Aaron Motsoaledi, officiated during the deployment ceremony at the Beitbridge Border Post on Thursday, 14 July. The minister acknowledged that the multi-agency-approach system had failed, which included the SANDF, SAPS, SARS, and Immigration and Customs. He said that, because the system was fragmented, none of the departments could be held liable for the border functions. According to Motsoaledi, this was the reason for the slow movement across the border. The BMA will in future be the sole entity held answerable for border issues and is expected eventually to fully run its own affairs. The security guards that were deployed all underwent a lifestyle audit and will regularly undergo such to determine how they live. Ac-

cording to Dr Motsoaledi, this is to try and stop corrupt activities within the BMA. Motsoaledi said that corruption within Home Affairs had always been there, but that the department lacked consequence management. He vowed to see corruption come to an end. Dr Motsoaledi, Deputy Minister of Home Affairs Njabulo Nzuza, Director-General Livhuwani Tommy Makhode from the National Home Affairs office, Cllr Anderson Mudunungu, representative of the executive mayor of Vhembe, as well as Musina Mayor Nkhanedzeni Godfrey Mawela, were taken a couple off kilometres west of the Beitbridge Border Post to one of the vulnerable points of entry, where security guards were deployed. Guards were also deployed at the bridge, where border jumpers simply used ladders to cross the bridge to gain entry into South Africa. Motsoaledi said that the number of guards was expected to increase to 600 by the end of this financial year.

it is ‘n groot leemte in ons kerklike lewe dat ons lidmate slegs ontvang, maar so selde uitdeel.
My kind verdien geregtigheid en ek glo hy sal dit kry. My kind is nie hier om homself te verdedig of te kan opstaan nie. Dit is my plig as ma om dit vir hom te doen,” het Soekie gesê. As ma was Junie veral vir haar ‘n emosionele tyd.
Members of the Hawks’ Serious Commercial Crime Investigation Unit arrested two more suspects in connection with the almost R37 million that went missing from a deceased FNB client’s bank account. The case first made international headlines when the same Hawks’ team arrested the 28-year-old Thabiso Matenda, an FNB employee from the FNB branch in Louis Trichardt, on 10 June this year. His arrest followed after the death of one of the bank’s clients, Zimbabwean millionaire and socialite Mr Obert Karombe, in a vehicle accident on 24 April this year. A day later, on 25 April, Matenda allegedly opened a profile of the late Karombe without authorisation. He then allegedly connived with an accomplice to open a new bank account, linked it to the deceased’s account and started spending all the money from the deceased’s account, totalling R36 989 051,67. The bank, however, picked up on Matenda’s shenanigans and

reported the matter to the Hawks. Among those to allegedly benefit from this generous spending spree were a girlfriend-and-boyfriend couple from Johannesburg, the 28-year-old Zimbabwean national Nomaphelo Seti and her 43-year-old Cameroonian boyfriend, Rody Martial Nzeya. The couple allegedly received R6 million from Matenda but started to fight over the money when the sender requested it back. The fight apparently turned violent. “When the girlfriend went to the police in Johannesburg to open a case of assault against her boyfriend, the police discovered that the money they were fighting for was actually stolen and the Limpopo Hawks were investigating the matter. The Hawks were alerted and found that R5.5 million of the R6 million that they had received was already returned to the sender,” said provincial Hawks spokesperson Captain Matimba Maluleke in a media statement. Seti and Nzeya were
arrested on 15 July and appeared in the Louis Trichardt Magistrate’s court on Monday on charges of fraud and theft. Their case was postponed until Friday, 22 July, when they will bring a joint bail application with Matenda, who has been in custody since his arrest. Until then, Seti and Nzeya will also remain in custody. According to information supplied, some of the money was allegedly donated to Matenda’s own church. “The investigation is still ongoing, and more arrests are expected,” said Maluleke.

As war in Europe dominates the public’s attention, viewers in Limpopo will unite with millions others around the globe for the annual convention of Jehovah’s Witnesses. This year’s convention’s theme is “Pursue Peace!” “This convention is an object lesson in how peace is being achieved by a global community right now as it unites millions of people even in areas of conflict like Ukraine and Russia,” said Kobus van der Merwe, local spokesperson for Jehovah’s Witnesses. “The power of the principles being discussed transcends national borders, ethnic differences and language barriers. Both individuals and families will benefit from attending the programme.” Jehovah’s Witnesses have been holding global conventions for more than 100 years. Following the practice of the past two years, this year’s virtual program will be released incrementally throughout July and August. The program’s first segment is available for streaming or download from 17 June. All are invited to attend the event by going to jw.org on the web or JW Broadcasting on the free JW Library app, or on streaming platforms such as ROKU TV or Apple TV. The programme is free and accessible to all. The three-day convention will be available in six parts, each corresponding to a half day of content. For more information, please contact Jehovah’s Witnesses Limpopo/Mpumalanga, South Africa at 082 857 4709 or kobusvdm@ vodamail.co.za.

Win R1 000 with your adventure story The first winner of the Zoutpansberger’s writer’s competition was supposed to be announced this week, but we are delaying things for a bit longer. Perhaps the school holidays played a role, perhaps load shedding made things difficult or perhaps just the cold weather, but we did not receive enough entries to have a proper judging. We have decided to not announce a winner this week. The 10 characters are thus still available, and you can send us their stories. The entries we have received will simply stand over for a week. However, we are not leaving our readers without the pleasure of a story. This week we publish a “demo” story, hopefully to assist in getting the competition going. Our “demo” story is rather problematic, for a variety of reasons. We first passed it around in the office to “test the waters”. Sadly, most of the Zoutpansberger’s staff members have never read the works of Herman Charles Bosman and did not understand the first part. Should we stay away from (an often unpleasant) history, or should we address contentious matters through storytelling and humour? We want to encourage our local writers to not be afraid to address problematic subjects. Although the competition hopes to unearth the talent of young writers, it is not exclusively meant for young writers. You can be 90 and still send an entry. Perhaps your story can be of more value to our young readers than that of many young writers. For those who do not yet know how the competition works: Every week, a R1 000 has been earmarked for the reader
❑
who submits the best story. The competition is a first-of-its-kind in that it combines a travel story with unrelated individual adventures. The weekly travel episodes are written by our own staff and these focus on the journey of a group of adventurers who are exploring the Old Salt Trail in the western Soutpansberg. They follow a five-day route, during which they encounter many of the treasures the mountain has to offer. The group of adventurers comprises 11 very diverse fictional travellers. The narrator is a young lady called Marelize. In every week’s edition, she will talk about the route and what the group members have encountered. Her topics will include features such as the area’s unique rock paintings or the fascinating beads scattered along the footpaths. Two “scar stories” are featured for every day of the trip. The group stops at a specific location for lunch and one of the members tells his or her story. The same happens at night, when the group gathers around the campfire and one person shares a story. This is also the part where our readers need to contribute and win prize money. The readers must use their imagination and write a story focusing on one of the characters. The theme of the competition is: “The night of the scars”. The idea is that each story will focus on a “scar” that the characters received somewhere in their lives. These can be physical scars, or they can be emotional scars. Short profiles of the 11 characters are provided. In some cases, Marelize will expand on the characters when she discusses the route. Studying each character and building a story around their
characteristics will be crucial. We launched the competition by providing an example of what the stories may look like. The first story is that of Marelize, and she explains how she lost a finger. (You can read her story on our web page: www.zoutpansberger.co.za/ marelize and follow the link.) No age limit has been set on who can enter for the competition. The stories, however, must be aimed at a young audience. Some limitations are applicable, though. The maximum length of an entry is 1 300 words. Once a character’s story is published, that “entry” is closed. If, for instance, you decided to write about Shabnim’s adventure and another writer’s story about Shabnim gets published, you need to move on to another character. However, this also means that entries can have a longer shelf life. Readers are welcome to enter stories on all 10 characters. The entries will stay “live” until the judges have decided who the winner is regarding a specific character. Judging starts at 13:00 on a Friday. That means that the entries received up to that point will be judged. If a story is entered about a specific character and that character does not feature in a specific week’s edition, the entry will stand over and becomes part of the “pool” of stories to be judged the following week. Only when a winning story about a specific adventurer is chosen, will the entries expire. Apart from these guidelines, the normal rules apply. The (secret) judges’ decisions are final and they will not meet anyone in a bar later to discuss the matter. No staff member of the Zoutpansberger or their family members may enter.
Zachary is often referred to as the local Bear Grylls. When it comes to the outdoors, there is very little he does not know. His insatiable thirst for adventure has taken the 39-year-old geologist on some of the world’s most dangerous wilderness trails. It is said that he once disappeared along the infamous West Coast Trail in British Columbia. When he reappeared 14 days later, he had a nasty scar on his left shoulder and a haunted look in his eyes.
❑
Emma is an experienced journalist who is currently working for a local newspaper while dreaming of becoming a war photographer. At 37 she has won numerous awards for writing, as well as photography, but has never mastered the art of keeping direction. She is constantly searching for that new adventure. Will she ever settle down?

Gerard is a Dutch adventure tourist. He ticks most of the boxes as far as stereotyping is concerned. He is slightly impatient and not discreet at all. He retired from the university where he was teaching a year ago and now at the age of 66 he spends his time travelling the world. Rovha, the soft-spoken dentist, with the smiling eyes. He seems to be a loner, mostly travelling on his own. He has climbed Kilimanjaro and completed the Camino de Santiago. You will mostly find him sitting in a quiet sport reading a book or newspaper.

Shabnim’s small stature may be deceiving. She is a tough adventurer and even formed part of an expedition to Marion Island. She looks young, but at 42 she has seen a lot in life. She lectures at a local university and is well-respected in her field.

Gerrit (55) comes from a military background. As a young boy, his father (also ‘n military man) shaped him into becoming a soldier. Tigers don’t cry and love is but a four-letter word. Rising to the rank of captain, he was one of the last members of the old South African Army to have seen the horrors of the Bush War on the Angolan border. With the new 1994 dispensation, he found himself on civvy street in a world he did not understand and nor did the world understand him. He never found love, although so desperately longing for it. He is constantly running away from something to somewhere, thus fining himself in the Soutpansberg. Maybe her he can find peace.
Lee (28) was born with a neurological disorder that inhibits the full use of here right leg and arm. She has, however, never allowed this inability to become a disability, living her life to the fullest and constantly challenging her body. Although physically strong, every now and then she shows signs of emotional weakness. She is not keen to talk about it, but something or someone has definitely left a scar.

Lisa (53) is the mother of two grown daughters and wife of the CEO of a successful Sandton-based Import/Export company. Since his work often takes him away on extended business trips abroad and both her daughters had left the nest, Lisa has taken up hiking and bird watching to fill her days and get out of the empty house. She frequently visits nature reserves and national parks around South Africa.
Marelize is one of the main characters in the adventure and also the narrator. She is 27 and originally from Namibia. She is a seasoned traveller and has visited countries in Europe and in the USA. She will not only describe the route being followed with its highlights, but also expand on her ten travel companions. It is important to follow closely what she says and build the characters accordingly. Marilize has a good sense of humour and willing to tackle whatever adventure awaits. She’s not that good with bike-riding and prefers walking trials.

The night of the scars on the old salt trail
The night of the scars on the Old Salt Trail DAY 2 - IT ALL STARTS AT SCHOEMANSDAL After an early-morning breakfast, the group make their way up the mountain. The route starts at the historical mess hall at Schoemansdal - a place where thousands of young children had been fed since the veldskool officially started in the 1970s. During breakfast, Marelize tried to find out when the first young “adventurers” had woken up in these buildings, but no-one seemed to be sure – not even Edwin Buys, their guide, who seemed a veritable fount of information about the school and the surrounding areas. He told her that one of the region’s first schools, the Happy Rest farm school, was started
Rovha’s (demo) story:
there in 1912. “For the next 40 years, it was a typical farm school, but in the mid-1950s it was turned into a centre for children with special needs,” said Edwin, looking pleased to impart this titbit. The idea that children should be sent far away from home to get an education somehow appalled Marelize. What would “special needs” really mean? Was it simply a dumping ground for delinquent children? “In the 1960s, it became a ‘Children’s-Act School’,” said Edwin, making quotation marks with his fingers in the air. “A term some high-brass planners of the education department dreamed up to refer to a centre where they sent children when their parents couldn’t care for them anymore. But these schools were also for outcasts - children who had behavioural problems and couldn’t fit in at regular
schools.” For a moment he looked a bit guilty, ashamed, as if he might have been one of them. “Then, for a year or two, around 1974, the school catered for children with disabilities. Shame, this didn’t work out so nicely,” said Edwin, his eyes becoming a bit watery, “but then some bigshot got the idea to turn it into a veldskool, you know, a place where groups of children could learn more about nature and conservation. So, for almost 50 years, Schoemansdal became a place of adventure, where young people made friends and beautiful memories.” Edwin definitely looked positively emotional! Like thousands of children throughout the years, Marelize and the other 10 adventurers made their way up the mountain, following Edwin. They opted for the difficult, but much more picturesque, route that followed the
stream and kept them in the shade of the ancient trees. The route took them through the gorge, and every now and then they had to cross the stream of sparkling fountain water. After about two hours of climbing, the route upward became very steep, and they had to use a rope ladder to scale some cliffs. Marelize and Liza were the two people least comfortable with the rock climbing, but they were more afraid of being left behind, so they pushed through. When they broke for an early lunch while still in the indigenous forest, Marelize was only too glad to rid herself of the heavy backpack and sat down next to the massive root of a fever tree. The root had some distinctive marks, which almost looked as if someone had scratched it with a file or a knife. “Those are leopard scratches,” said

That wasn’t very reassuring to Marelize, but the almost lackadaisical approach of both Gerrit and Edwin eased her mind a bit. The route for the remainder of the day would hopefully be less strenuous. They had some more climbing to do, but then the way eased out when they reached the upper Schoemansdal campsite. They were to turn west, with a short stretch of sandy road waiting before they reached Crewe, where they would spend the night. wasn’t perfectly lined up. If all else failed, I knew what to do. Five seconds before the arrow would be released, a buzzer would sound, and I then had to count to four before throwing my body to the right. I knew that my magician friend was very experienced. He had done this many times before, so nothing could go wrong.” “And, of course, it did,” said Marelize. “The first performance was perfect. I was released with more than ten seconds on the clock. The last night, however, was a lot more spectacular. Perhaps it was the wetness that caused the locks to stick, perhaps the straitjacket was put on too tightly, no-one knows. “When the buzzer sounded, I froze up. It was as if everything happened in slow motion. The arrow was released, but fortunately it was aligned to miss my head. Sadly, though, it didn’t miss my shoulder. I was later told I had blacked out seconds before the first members of the audience fainted. We got a standing ovation, although it could have been that the people just wanted a better view…” he said with a shrug. “Well, that’s a career ender,” said Linda. “I suppose that shock caused you to quit show business.” “No. My dad did,” said Rovha. “After hearing about the incident, he rushed to Makhanda, where I was recovering in hospital. His instructions were very clear: ‘Rovha, you will stop this acting nonsense at once, and go study to become a dentist!’”

Venetia mine donates 33 new jump bags to Musina EMS Community Support Continuing its efforts to strengthen health services in its communities, De Beers Venetia mine donated 33 brand-new jump bags to the Musina Emergency Medical Services recently. The jump bags will be particularly useful to aid in the provision of emergency care and
will carry various supplies, including bandages, syringes and drips, among other things. In accepting the donation, Musina Hospital chief executive officer Ntovhedzeni Ligege said: “This is a very much appreciated donation that will make a huge difference to our emergency medical-service efforts. This is not the first time Venetia mine has stepped in to assist; whenever
we shout, you respond positively - and we hope we will continue to sustain our good relationship.” The Musina EMS team is comprised of 21 intermediate-life-support personnel and 12 basic-life-support personnel who aid Musina and its surrounding areas. Speaking at the handover ceremony, Venetia mine’s community health
11
specialist, Muziwandile Damane, said: “This is one of many initiatives that we have undertaken to improve health outcomes in our communities. These jump bags will definitely go a long way in terms of ensuring Musina EMS is well prepared to execute their duties of providing the required health services to those impacted”. Spring is now just more than a month away and the Louis Trichardt Parkrun has already shown an increase in interest, with 31 runners and walkers taking part in the 68th event on Saturday, 16 July. The volunteers have been making a few changes to improve the running of events for Parkrunners. The course, which has always been slightly short of 5km, has been lengthened, with the turn on the dam wall being moved to bring the route very close to the full distance. The volunteers have now formed five teams, with each team running the event in rotation, so each team does duty about once a month. More administrators have also been added to the Louis Trichardt Facebook page to allow the page to be updated more frequently, and an additional person will be able to process the results on the Parkrun results page to ensure they are available promptly. Parkruns are free community events of 5km open to everyone who wishes to run or walk and are held in the Tree Park every Saturday morning at 8:00 (April to September) and 07:00 (October to March).
