community in a state of shock and confusion, not knowing what or who could be behind the fires and who will be next to be targeted.

After the fires, villagers are now counting their losses. Some of the victims lost everything, including food and clothing.

Luckily for them, the Thulamela disaster management team responded swiftly and handed over food parcels to the victims. Surprisingly enough, the attacker or attackers targeted mostly struggling families and only thatched huts were burnt. A few moderate increases and subtle threats in Mayor Mutavhatsindi’s speech “… those who pay for services, get … services. On the other hand, those who decided to withdraw their payment of services will be drawn to the discussion table to deal with this noble responsibility of responsibility …”

This statement came from the mayor of the Makhado Municipality, Cllr David Mutavhatsindi, during his State-of-the-Municipality address a fortnight ago.

The 2012/13 budget that the Council tabled held very few surprises, but there were glimpses that the municipality will take a stronger stance against nonpayment for services and expect more accountability.

The tariff increases for the next financial year were, as expected, moderate, with only the electricity rates increasing by double digits with 11.03%. For the following year, a 16,93% rise in electricity tariffs is on the cards, while the price hike for 2014/15 is an alarming 22,23%.

The charges for water, refuse removal, sewerage and sundries will rise by 5,9%.

The Council opted to allow a mere 5% increase in salaries, as guided by the National Treasury.

This may be an opportunistic move, as the various labour unions are sure to put up a fight in this regard. As is, the salary bill amounts to almost R185 million, which includes new positions to be filled during the financial year.

“The cost of overtime has been

drastically reduced in order to redirect the funds to service delivery projects,” the mayor said.

In the past years, the Makhado Municipality became more reliant on grants and loans and this year is no exception. Apart from the municipal infrastructure grant (MIG) of R67,4 million, Council will also rely on a local government financial management grant (R1,5 million), an integrated national electrification programme grant (R7 million) and a municipal systems improvement grant (R800 000) to make ends meet. The equitable share grant amounts to R235,43 million, which brings the total grants budgeted for to just over R312 million.

Mayor Mutavhatsindi emphasized the necessity to upgrade and maintain the region’s electricity infrastructure. This ties in with other responsibilities such as the provision of clean water. “If [the electricity substations are] not upgraded, the completion of the Nandoni project cannot bring anyf relief as the pumping station will need more power, which is currently not there,” he said. To assist with the proposed projects, Council is in the process of applying for a R100 million loan from the Development Bank of SA. During his budget speech, the mayor made it very clear that service delivery is not what it should be. He referred to a customer satisfaction study

conducted by the Department of Cooperative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs.

This study revealed that 32% of respondents described the level of service provided by the Makhado Municipality as poor.

A clean audit seems to be an ideal which needs to be attained within the next two year. “The time for irregular, wasteful and fruitless expenditure must be history which should not repeat itself,” said Mayor Mutavhatsindi. financial management.”

In the previous financial year, the auditor general’s report showed up R821 257 as irregular expenditure, as well as a further R34 735 described as fruitless expenditure. The auditor general once again issued a disclaimer and had several questions regarding the accounts of

the municipality.

During his address a fortnight ago, the mayor also took a swipe at irresponsible labour unions. He urged managers to treat workers with respect, but also warned that “Equally gone are those days where union leaders will dictate what should happen in the municipality.”

Infrastructure development and maintenance received a fair amount of the budget “cake”, with roads being at the front of the queue. A sum of R12 million has been set aside to rehabilitate the Eltivillas CBD, with a further R6 million earmarked for completing phase 2 of the street resurfacing project in Eltivillas Ext 1.

Streets will also be tarred in Tshikota (R7 million) and Waterval (R6 million). Council plans to rehabilitate several access roads, such as the one to Mphaila (R5 million), the Piesanghoek to Khunda road (R6,6 million), the Sereni to Mashamba Post Office road (R3,5 million) and the Tshivulana to Tshilaphala Ring Road (R8 million).

In Tshakhuma, R4,5 million is budgeted for landscaping and a street-lights project. In Waterval and Dzanani, halls will be built at an estimated cost of R3 million each.

Electricity infrastructure will, as has become customary, claim a large part of the budget. Mayor Mutavhatsindi mentioned that Council had completed 1 882 household connections in 10 villages in the past year . This process will continue and a further R13,29 million will be invested in the electricity-supply programme. “Eskom has bud­ geted R24,3 million to connect households in 10 villages, which include Midoroni, Tshivhuyuni, Malonga Extension, Makhakhi, Shirley and Misevhe A and C,” said the mayor.

What came as a bit of a surprise for many was the attention that sport clubs and recreational facilities received in the budget.

A sum of R4 million has been set aside to upgrade sports facilities.

There was also a subtle message to sport clubs that do not encourage mass participation when the mayor announced that existing lease agreements for sporting facilities will be reviewed. “We are concerned that sports and community facilities continue to be under-utilised, vandalised and damaged by community members,” he said.

An additional R800 000 has been set aside to support tournaments and events. The sponsorship for the Kremetart Cycle Race has increased from R9 700 to R40 000 next year, whereas the Hanglip 54 golf tournament will receive R40 000 next year instead of R16 000.

The Makhado Local Football Association will receive R60 000 (previously R18 500), the Land of Legend Marathon’s organisers will get R30 000 and R100 000

will go towards the Mapungubwe Games. The organisers of this year’s indigenous games will receive R76 000.

The Makhado Municipality may well be on the road to a “greener” status. An additional R20 million has been budgeted by the Vhembe District Municipality for the completion of the Makhado Waste Water Treatment Works. A new landfill site will be developed in Makhado at a cost of around R5 million.

“We shall be closing the existing landfill site in Makhado and an amount of R1,2 million has been budgeted [for this project],” the mayor said.

The mayor clearly had an axe to grind with people who demarcate sites without the involvement and approval of the municipality.

“These tendencies must stop as they can lead to a banana municipality where everyone will do as he/she wishes,” he said. The mayor highlighted some of the demarcation projects currently underway and stressed that the municipality has a responsibility to ensure that effective spatial planning and development takes place.

The challenge of fighting poverty in all areas also received some attention during the mayor’s address. “Makhado Municipality has 123 837 poor households, of which 76 073 are receiving free basic services,” he said and added that 18 859 customers had submitted applications for the indigent support programme. In total, 15 529 customers are collecting free basic services tokens.

To enhance community participation, Council opted to support and capacitate the ward committees actively. An amount of R4,8 million has been budgeted to coordinate and support these committees in organising meetings.

Excitement as Tshikuwi village receives electricity at last Like several other residents, she danced and ululated as a way of celebrating the new development. "It is indeed the happiest moment of my life. Life without any means of energy was very difficult for me," she said.

Ratshitshi added that it was difficult for her children to do their homework or study at night as they only relied on a candle for light. "Things will be much better now and hopefully it will also impact positively on their school results," she added.

preciation to both Solar Vision and the Makhado Municipality.

Other residents who spoke to Limpopo Mirror also shared the same sentiments.

They said that when they moved to the area it was difficult as they only relied on paraffin lamps and with the current high cost of paraffin, life was difficult.

Most of the residents in the area are unemployed and only rely on their child grants for a living.

According to the councillor for Ward 36, Cllr Mbulaheni Magada, residents will only be

expected to pay a monthly fee of R28. "We are happy that the government is committed to rendering good services to the people," said Magada.

Residents are still faced with the serious challenge of a water shortage. Magada, who is also staying in the same area, said that this problem would soon be a thing of the past.

"The municipality has just completed the construction of a water reservoir in the area that will be supplied with water from boreholes.”

Artificial penis for ritual attack survivor Mysterious fires cause havoc in villages Five years after his genitals were sliced off by a body-parts seller, a Limpopo boy is looking forward to receiving an artificial penis.

13-year-old Fortune Khumalo of Jilongo village near Malamulele were sliced off during an attack in 2007, when he was eight years old.

The attack took place while he was playing in the bushes next to his home.

Fortune was attacked by a self-confessed body-parts seller, Lucky Simango (23), who also lived at Jilongo and is now serving a 15-year term in jail.

Fortune’s mother, Ms Nancy Siweya, said her son was now starting to cope with the situation after years of agony. His principal, Mr Ronald Hlungwani, said Khumalo‘s future looked bright, despite what had happened in the past. “It will be good if he can receive an artificial penis, so that he can be like any other growing boy,” added Hlungwani.

Alleged Mutale killer arrested again The re-arrest of an alleged dangerous rapist and killer, Vhutshilo Tshiboho, last Wednesday morning was hailed by the police as a major breakthrough.

Tshiboho (35) of Folovhodwe village escaped from the Masisi Police cells about six months ago. He was arrested by a combined Task Team of Zimbabwe and South Africa at the Zimbabwean border.

Limpopo police spokesperson Brig Hangwani Mulaudzi confirmed that the police have re-arrested Tshiboho. It is alleged that Tshiboho had committed crimes in Mutale villages such as Thengwe, Matangari and Lukau, after his escape from the Masisi police cells earlier this year. It is also alleged that he had raped and killed an old gogo, Ms Julia Thangwana of Thengwe-Matshetshete village near Mutale. He appeared in the Masisi District Court last Thursday on charges of murder, rape and esVhutshilo Tshiboho, appearing in the Masisi cape from lawful custody. The case was postponed District Court. and he remains in custody.

“I have nothing. I am very poor, as you can see, and I am just earning a living through piece jobs. We barely have enough for the family and the little we had is all gone now,” she said.

She said the hut which caught fire was the main house where she slept, but on that fateful night she felt like not sleeping in the hut. “I just thank God and my sixth sense, which told me that something bad was going to hap-

pen to me. I did not feel comfortable in the hut and went and slept with my children,” she said.

She said around midnight she was awoken by her grandchild, who was attending a call of nature. “I was shocked to see there was light outside, and I went out to find the hut on fire. We tried calling for help, only to find that our neighbours were also struggling to put out a fire at one of their huts,” said Netshitomboni.

She said they had to watch helplessly as the fire consumed everything they had collected over the years. “We are left with nothing. It will be very hard for us to pick up the pieces and to put our lives back on track. At this moment, we will rely on the mercy of Good Samaritans to assist us.”

What makes her more confused is the fact that she does not know of any enemies or having had a fight with anybody. “I am a peaceful person and cannot find

any reason why anybody could want to harm me,” she said.

Ms Masindi Makona of the same village also suffered severe losses. Her hut was completely gutted and she was not able to save anything either.

The local traditional leader, Chief Mmbangiseni Thukhutha, said the incident had shocked everyone in the village. “We have never experienced this type of catastrophe in our village. We are shocked and confused, and we do not even know who might be behind this.”

The spokesperson for the police in Thohoyandou, Maj Mashudu Malelo, said that they had opened arson cases.

A community meeting was held at Hathukhutha on Tuesday, where it was decided that contributions of R10 per household be made to assist the families. Suggestion boxes will also be placed at strategic points for information about the fires.

Stiff competition for aspirant farmers Young Kedibone Khakhu, 2011’s national finalist in the Young Aspirant Farmer of the year awards, surprised all when he forked out R1 000 from his own pocket to add to the prizes of this year’s winners.

Speaking at the ceremony, Ms Edna Raphunga, senior manager of the Department of Agriculture in Vhembe, encouraged the youth to take part actively in agriculture. She told them not to look at agriculture as being for the elderly only, but as a profession for all. In his words of encouragement, Kedibone Khakhu, the 2011 finalist in the competition, who is now a farmer in his own right, urged the winners to utilise their winnings by improving their businesses. He told them that he

used his winnings to open a market stall where he sold his fresh produce to the community.

He handed over a cheque of R1 000 to be added to the prize purse of the top producer for the national/commercial market.

“This is a humble contribution towards the development of agriculture.

We would like to see you grow and be successful like we are doing,” he said. Winners went home with prizes ranging from R3 000 for the third position and R4 000 for the second prize to R5 000 for the winners in the different categories.

Beit Bridge’s Vanessa is Miss Zimbabwe-USA A 20-year-old Beit Bridge model, Vanessa Dambanyika Mbedzi, is the pride of her community, after she was crowned Miss ZimbabweUSA 2012 during a recent pageant held in New York. She is a business student at Morgan State University in Baltimore, Maryland, in the United States.

The humble and soft-spoken beauty queen outclassed seven other contestants. Alinane Chitseko was crowned first princess and the second princess is Thandekile-Melissa

Rhoades, who also won the Miss Photogenic-title.

“I feel so proud of myself for achieving one of my goals, and I'm motivated to do greater things.

Zimbabwe is one of the more popular countries in Africa, which is blessed with immense natural beauty. It is a country that raised me and I am proud to represent my town and the country as Miss Zimbabwe USA 2012," she said.

She added that her dream was to make a positive change in children's

lives. "I will take advantage of this title by giving back to the less fortunate, assist with education for children in Zimbabwe, children with HIV/AIDS and those suffering from poverty. I believe that every child deserves to be educated in order to have a better future,” she said.

Vanessa is currently working with the Munhu Organisation, a local NGO that helps orphans with HIV/AIDS around Zimbabwe. “I feel that being a part of that would be a great experience for me to help make a difference in my generation. During the year of my reign, I want to work with as many organisations as I can to make a difference, not only to children but also the youth in Zimbabwe.

I will raise the Zimbabwean flag higher because I am proud to represent this beautiful nation.”

She has also just donated several blankets and beds to Khayalethemba Orphanage in Beit Bridge.

Vanessa also intends to fund the construction of another home for orphaned children in Beit Bridge.

She says she was inspired by her mother, Mrs Mavis Mbedzi, a Beit Bridge-based businesswoman. “My mum is my role model. In fact, she is a woman of modesty, morals and honesty.

She is generous withher time, puts others before herself, is hardworking and has great faith in me.

She taught me to be stronger and to set my goals higher and I am where I am because of her."

She mentioned that it had always been her dream to become a model, but at this stage she is still focusing on getting her degree in business management. "After I have obtained my degree, I will possibly do modelling on a full-time basis,” she added.

Vanessa enjoys cooking, spending time with her family and friends, listening to music and socialising. She attended Portland Primary School in Colleen Bawn outside Beit Bridge and Victoria High in Masvingo. A suspected drunken man from Mahole village outside Beit Bridge was killed by a car while staggering to his home, following a drinking spree at a local business centre, police have said.

The local police spokesperson, Sgt Loveness Mangena, said the incident occurred on Friday at around 17:00 at the 25km peg along the FilabusiEkusileni road.

The victim is 24-year-old and hails from Mahole village. His body has since been taken to the local hospital mortuary. “The victim was coming from a local business centre and heading towards his home. He was hit while trying to avoid a speeding vehicle, which was coming from

the opposite direction, and died instantly,” Mangena said.

She added that the driver of the vehicle, a Mazda bakkie, was heading towards Filabusi with 13 people onboard. “The driver spotted the man, holding a bottle of beer and staggering in the middle of the road. He unfortunately hit the man,” Mangena said.

She said the car was taken to the local vehicle inspection depot for examination. “We suspect the driver was speeding and as police we continue to urge both motorists and pedestrians to exercise extreme caution when using our roads, to avoid the recurrence of such incidents in which lives are unnecessarily lost,” she added.

Even when she has done something wrong, he has a way to communicate to her, love her and offer forgiveness when it is needed.

A man must show good and godly leadership, especially in the area of communication when your relationship is faced with challenges.

Weather the storms of life by turning toward one another and building into each other rather than rejecting each other. The spirit of reconciliation and forgiveness must be part and parcel of your DNA as a couple. We must draw some lessons and inspirations from our Lord Jesus Christ. He loved his people so much that He hanged on the cross for their salvation, He forgave them when they did not even deserve it.

For one to embrace this kind of spirit, the spirit of reconciliation and forgiveness, you need to take the following principles seriously: 1. Accepting each other unconditionally: Total acceptance is the most important foundation in building your mate’s self-esteem. Without it, your relationship and marriage rests on the shifting sand of emotions and it is bound to crack and fall when storms come; 2. Ensure that you do not always bring the imperfect past of your mate to the table each time that you encounter new challenges. Some men and women are very fond of counting the sins of others, to a point that you will always be reminded that this is the 10th time that you are asking forgiveness and I know that you are still going to do it again. This is not the correct attitude; forgive as many times as you can; 3. Plan positive language in whatever you say to your mate. Words are very powerful and therefore can either be used to build or destroy.

Words can be used to build a positive self-image or even heal the spreading malignancy of negative things in your marriage; 4. Allow your mate to say and do things with that freedom to fail as well. We learn through our mistakes and therefore give your mate the opportunity to commit such mistakes and, in the process, teach her the correct things. I am not talking about mistakes that are committed intentionally or in an effort to seek attention, in this instance; 5. Please your mate by letting her know that she is the most valued person, loved and cherished by you and only you. Invest your energy and time in ensuring that your relationship works. “We as employers are worried that our rights are not protected to the same extent as those of our employees. It hampers production, due to laws that are giving more protection to our employees,” he added. “Employees must understand that when they get jobs, they must not aim to hamper development and profit at the company they are working for; they must aim to make more profit,” said Magwabeni.

Magwabeni addressed guests during the official opening of the more than R10 million state-of-the-art EM Magwabeni Convention Centre at 2 Ten hotel in Sibasa on Saturday. The Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Mr Richard Baloyi, Khosikhulu Vho-Toni Mphephu Ramabulana, Gole Musiiwa Mphaphuli, the SABC Limpopo’s Victor Ravhuanzwo, different pastors and a large number of community members attended the event.

Magwabeni said that nearly 50 permanent jobs had been created with the opening of the centre. He added that employees should work hard because when production increases, the employees will get better salaries.

Min Richard Baloyi said he strongly supported the initiatives of black people, especially in the Vhembe area. According to him, the centre was situated in an economically active area. “We urged people in the province and from abroad to support the initiatives that are creating more job opportunities in the area."

Baloyi also encouraged businesspeople to plough back into their communities and assist in development of the rural areas, especially by donating equipment for sports development.

In an interview with this paper, Tshikota said it took them three years to complete the recent project. This project included two bilingual dictionaries, one with idioms and the other one of proverbs in Tshivenda and English, while the third is a monolingual diction-

ary of the Tshivenda language.

He added that the monolingual dictionary is the first of its kind in the history of the Venda people.

“As a unit we completed another project in 2006, the first of its kind and called Thalusamaipfi ya Tshivenda in Tshivenda and English. The three new dictionaries have been written to meet the needs of students, language practitioners, translators and those who are in the academic field,” he said.

He added that the unit had so far printed 1 500 copies and had given 339 copies to 113 selected schools around the Vhembe district and about 210 copies to a few selected

individuals as complementary copies. “The dictionaries will contribute much to the development and the preservation of the Tshivenda language. Currently, we are busy with a dictionary of cultural items in Tshivenda,” he said.

He said among the finished dictionary products are Tshivenda Terminology List No 3 (revised edition), Thalusamirero ya Tshivenda, a bilingual dictionary in Tshivenda and English and a bilingual dictionary in Tshivenda and Afrikaans.

All the dictionary products will be launched next year around October, when the TNLU will be celebrating its 12 years of existence at Univen.

ANC Chief Whip Mathole Motshekga has urged parents to give proper guidance to their children in order for them and the country to have a good future.

In his address during the Alfred Xuma memorial lecture, held at Mutale Town Hall on Sunday, Motshekga said ANC leaders had the responsibility to prepare children to be self-reliant.

“The challenge as we enter the second centenary of the existence of the ANC is to determine the thinking of Xuma and others when they started the organization. Xuma must be a good example to our youth. After qualifying as a teacher, he turned down the offer of a teaching position and went to the US to further his studies.”

Motshekga said that, unlike the youth of today, Xuma turned down an opportunity to get employment in his early life “and chose a path to empower himself

with knowledge that would help him to be self-sufficient.”

With the high number of school drop-outs in the country, Motshekga said it was worrying that many youths formed closed corporations and used the connections they had in government to get tenders. Most of these tenders are for things they outsource to Indians and other nationals as these youth can’t manufacture anything on their own.

“There is a danger that this generation cannot do anything for themselves. If things continue like this, other people will take over our country and municipalities,” said Motshekga.

He urged the youth of today to emulate the founders of the ANC who prioritised education, such as Chief Albert Luthuli, Xuma and others. “Xuma was also a Sunday School teacher. If you want to build good character in our children, volunteer at churches. We are neglecting our

children. We are not imparting the right values to our children, hence we have this immorality problem,” said Motshekga.

Motshekga also urged ANC members to vote for people with a track record within the organisation when they go to the Mangaung conference.

He added that administrators were failing to deliver services to the people because they also wanted to be mayors. He said protest marches about service delivery were fuelled by a lack of political leadership. “Xuma volunteered to work for free in clinics when he came back from the US because there was no money, but we demand a 25% increase, even when the municipality is bankrupt,” he said, while adding that ANC members should stop discussing individuals within the party and discuss policies.

Xuma was president of the ANC from 1940 until 1949.

Alpheus Lieba the new mayor of Mutale Mr Alpheus Lieba was sworn in as the new mayor of Mutale Local Municipality at a special council meeting that was held at Mutale last Thursday.

This follows the appointment of Cllr Tshitereke Matibe, the former mayor of Mutale, as the new executive mayor of the Vhembe District Council.

“The ultimate goal of the African National Congress (ANC) is to achieve total emancipation

of all the people of South Africa from the bondages of poverty, ill health, poor education systems, unemployment, crime and poor service delivery. As the ANC and this council have entrusted in me the powers to lead the municipality during this transitional period, I consider it to be a collective responsibility of all of us in this council to ensure that we achieve this objective,” said Lieba.

Matibe for “having laid a good foundation on which we will continue to serve our people effectively”.

Youth declares war on illegal posters A local church’s youth group took to the streets of Makhado on Saturday morning to remove hundreds of illegal posters advertising abortions and the enlargement of male genitalia. They spent their Youth Day cleaning up part of the CBD and encouraging others to also take responsibility for the environment.

The Soutpansberg congregation of the Dutch Reformed Church launched the initiative to rid the town of the unwanted and illegal posters. “Someone has to start and tell the people who put up these posters that we are not content with the way they destroy the beauty of our town. We also do not condone their illegal activities and the manner in which they destroy innocent lives,” says the youth minister at the church, Rudolph Botha.

Makhado, like so many other towns in the country, suffers from the scourge of these illegal activities. The posters are pasted on just about every street pole, stop sign and even electricity distribution boxes. “You will hardly find a parking meter in town without one of these offensive posters stuck onto it,” said Botha.

What is worrying is that the authorities do very little to act against the perpetrators. In other parts of the country where communities have questioned the police on this, it was stated that it is a matter of “misleading advertising” and thus a matter for the Advertising Standards Authority. This is, however, doubtful as several laws and by-

laws are being transgressed.

The modus operandi of the groups is fairly simple. The posters advertise “Safe Abortions” and normally refer to a Dr Nana or a Dr Bisa or some other name of a so-called doctor. A cell phone number is supplied, with no physical address added to the poster. When the number is called, respondents are put in contact with a local “agent” who supplies the women with pills such as Cytotec (also known as Misoprostol). This type of medication is prescribed for medical ulcers, but can be used to terminate pregnancies as it induces uterine contractions.

Part of the problem is that these pills are not dispensed by trained and qualified health practitioners and can lead to a lot of pain and even death if administered incorrectly. It should also only be used if the pregnancy is in its early stages (nine weeks or less).

In South Africa, abortion was legalised, under certain conditions, in 1996 when the Choice on Termination of Pregnancy Act was passed. It makes provision for women to access legal abortions on request at state or private facilities up to 12 weeks into the pregnancy.

The Act stipulates that any person who is not a medical practitioner or registered nurse with special training who performs an abortion is guilty of an offense.

The question is being asked why women opt for back-street abortions when such services are available free of charge at state clinics. “The answer lies

in a combination of factors such as the time when the pregnancy is discovered (after 12 weeks), a fear of stigmatization and perhaps pure convenience,” says Botha. “It is easier to pay a few hundred rands for a couple of pills than go to a government clinic where you have to be examined and receive counselling,” he adds.

The backstreet abortions are, however, dangerous and could lead to infertility or even death.

“If we can help save one life by removing the posters, it will all be worthwhile,” says Botha.

The group of volunteers who helped to take down the posters on Saturday are very realistic about the future challenges.

“We need to get more people involved,” says Frans van der Merwe, one of the volunteers.

Frans has been removing the posters for some time, as he believes it destroys many young lives and is also a blatant act of lawlessness.

“What needs to happen is that every property owner or manager of a business must join the fight against the illegal posters.

If all of us simply remove the offensive material in front of our shops or houses, they will stop,” says Frans.

According to him, local job seekers are offered a few rands to put up the posters early in the morning hours, so as not to be seen. “If we take them down immediately, they (the kingpins) will realise they are fighting a losing battle. At this stage, we are a few individuals taking down the posters. If a couple of hundred people joined us and just cleaned in front of their premises, the odds would change dramatically in favour of law-abiding citizens,” Frans adds.

According to Rudolph Botha, they are planning a similar action within the next few weeks. “We invite all other organisations, whether their members are young or old, to join us. If we rid the town of these posters, we will send out a clear message to everyone that our town is not a haven for lawless people who have no regard for human life.”

Young ones told to stick to their culture Chief Ratshinyiwaho Tshikororo of the Tshikororo clan has urged youths to stick to their roots and to lead exemplary lives in order to see the family developing.

Tshikororo, who also urged the royal family to be more united, was addressing the annual Tshikororo Royal Burial Society gathering. The event, which was attended by hundreds of traditionally clad members of the family from all over Limpopo and outside the area, took place at Musanda Ha Tshikororo on Saturday. This year’s event was special as it also celebrated the fifth year of the society’s existence. The coordinator and chairperson of the society, Vho Patson Tshikororo, said the day was held annually and coincided with Youth Day. “We always gather here at our headquarters where

family members from all over the country come together for the whole day. We started very humbly, but we can today look back with pride as the occasion is growing by leaps and bounds. We afford our youth some networking sessions with each other and time to learn from the elders, “ he said. Tshikororo said families were no longer visiting each other like before and this led to children’s unknowingly falling in love with their relatives, which is a taboo and not according to their culture. “We will continue to observe this day as special as we are now reaping the fruits, and each year we strive to improve our event.”

Two arrested for smuggling cigarettes The Thohoyandou police arrested two Zimbabweans for the illegal possession of cigarettes last week.

According to Thohoyandou police spokesperson Const Avhafarei Tshiovhe, the suspects, aged 29 and 35, were arrested along the Punda Maria road in Tshisahulu. “Police were conducting routine patrols and noticed the two next to the road with two big bags. Upon inspecting the bags, they found the cigarettes and confiscated them. The value of the haul is estimated at R56 000,” she said.

The two women were arrested and they were scheduled to appear in the Thohoyandou Magistrate’s Court.

Cultivating water the ancient way

Nitin Desai qualifies as an orthodontist

Deep down in some parts of the remote rural area of Mutale, water has become a very scarce commodity.

Some villagers go for weeks without water, while others do not have water at all. The communities in these areas did not, however, just sit down and lament. They have come up with a bright new idea.

They are now cultivating clean water from old fountains that were abandoned after the advent of street taps. They are also planting trees, which will assist in the preservation of water.

Formed in 2010, the Mutale Rivers Fountains and Trees Protection Project, which comprises eight members, has so far revitalised eight springs, which are now the source of clean, natural water to the community.

One of the Soutpansberg’s young achievers, Nitin Desai, recently qualified to become a specialist in orthodontics. He now forms part of the elite team of specialists at the University of Pretoria.

Nitinkumar Narendra Desai was born at Elim Hospital on 25 April 1978. He is the second son of well-known local businessman Mr Narendra Mohanlal Desai. He has an older brother, Kamalkumar Narendra Desai, who is also a dentist (some of our readers may be familiar with him as he served the local community from 1998 – 2000 and then served on the Phelophepa Health care Train from 2001 – 2002. Kamalkumar is currently in private practice in Eldorado Park, Gauteng).

Nitin completed his primary schooling at Eltivillas Primary School, where he was head prefect in Std 5. He then went to boarding school at a school called Zinniaville Secondary School. His zest for sport and achievements continued and he represented the school in cricket and volleyball. He was captain of the volleyball team for three years and received provincial colours (representing the North West Province in the USSASA games). He went on to once again become head prefect and a member of the students representative council.

He completed his dental studies at the University of the Western Cape and, while there, took part in many outreach programmes, e.g. the EROS School for the disabled, the Geriatric Denture Project and the GUGS Denture Project. He graduated as a dentist in June 2002, after which he performed his community service locally at Siloam Hospital. He then went back to the University of the Western Cape and worked for two years at the dedicated Service Rendering Division before he was offered a position in the Restorative and Paedodontics Department as of July 2005, which he occupied on a sessional basis.

In the same year, Nitin enrolled for a postgraduate diploma in orthodontics, which he successfully completed in 2006 (with distinction). He was also involved in a private practice from 2003 until the end of September 2008, when his dream finally became a reality to further his education in orthodontics. In October 2008, he took up a registrars post at the University of Pretoria (Tukkies). Just a few days into the course, Nitin said, “I have come to realise that I don’t know what I got myself into ...”

But, apparently, Nitin did cope with the pressure and, during his studies, he went on to win an award for the best presentation, in 2011, at the annual South African Society of Orthodontists (SASO) conference.

After three years and eight months of enduring hardships and sleepless nights, he can finally reap the reward of all the effort and hard work that he put in as, on 29 May 2012, Nitin qualified as an orthodontist.

Nitin would just like to firstly thank God Almighty for guarding his heart, mind and giving him the impossible strength to persist. He would like to extend his gratitude to his parents, brother, extended family and friends, for their unconditional love and support, for always standing by his side and keeping him focussed on the goal.

“We could not just sit and lament while our communities suffered, so we decided to do something that would improve our situation, and that was when the idea came into being.”

He said the community could not go thirsty while they had many sources of clean water which, if only they could be looked after, could provide water to the community throughout the year. “We have many rivers here which are rich in natural springs. In the past, they pro-

vided our forefathers with clean water, even before the advent of taps in the area. If we can all go out and clean those springs, the problem of water will be history in our communities. We will have clean drinking water throughout the year,” he said.

He added that some of the springs were now providing water to some communities which did not have any water and some which went for weeks without water. “We are soon to embark on a campaign to educate school children and our community about some of the old sources of water. We will teach them about their importance and the trees that grow around them,” he said. Hired vehicles for Musina’s traffic cops

Soutpansberg Primary´s Grade 5s enjoy themselves during the school´s fun day last Friday.

The Musina Municipality has hired two vehicles to ease the pressure resulting from a lack of vehicles for their traffic officers.

Recently, there has been outcry from opposition political parties that the situation was affecting service delivery, as there were also claims that the municipal traffic officers were patrolling on foot.

Municipal spokesperson Wilson Dzebu acknowledged that there was serious shortage of vehicles in the traffic division.

He said that the division had four cars. “Three of the cars broke down and the fourth one was involved in an accident while the traffic officers were on duty. This affected us negatively and traffic officers had to keep on working, despite the serious challenge of the vehicle shortage.”

Dzebu admitted that, at times, some of the traffic officers were forced to patrol on foot. “Foot patrol is part of our traffic of-

ficials’ daily duties and it is not a must that each traffic officer should have a car. However, we would like to thank this team of dedicated men and women who continued to work tirelessly despite those challenges,” he added He said the municipality had decided to hire two cars to make sure that the traffic officers performed their duties with ease.

“Besides the two cars that we have hired, another bakkie that went for repair is now back.

This means that we have three vehicles in our traffic section.

This will ease the pressure as our traffic officials will now have vehicles to use when they execute their duties.”

He added that the municipality would acquire new cars during the new financial year, which starts next month. “We are going to buy three new vehicles for our traffic officers immediately when the new financial year starts in July. We are prepared to serve

our communities and deliver excellent service, despite a lack of resources.”

He warned motorists who might want to take advantage of the situation in Musina. “The long arm of the law is very tight and anyone who might want to take advantage will be subjected to the strongest disciplinary action.”

In a press release that Limpopo Mirror recently received, Mr Geoffrey Tshibvumo, the regional chairperson for COPE in Vhembe, expressed his disappointment with the manner in which the administration of Musina Municipality is running their traffic department. Tshibvumo stated that the situation was due to poor management and poor planning. “This is a clear demonstration of how the ruling party leads ... they don’t have the capacity or the know-how.

Every time there is a post available, they hire their incompetent comrades,” Tshibvumo added.

Musina traffic officers can now execute their duties with ease, after the municipality intervened to curb the shortage of vehicles.

He mentioned that since the country’s re-admission to the FIFA family, South Africa has “taken its rightful place in the global sporting universe and I, on behalf of SAFA, would like to laud the youths for literally putting their bodies on the line for the freedom of this country,” he said.

“Therefore, the youths of today should appreciate what their predecessors fought for. Education is power; the youth of today must know that there is nothing that is more paramount than education.

So, even when you take sport as your preferred professional career, it is important to put education ahead of everything,” said Nematandani.

According to the general manager of the team, Mr Sam Khaphathe, they have released their Zimbabwean striker, Kingston Nkhatha, to Kaizer Chiefs.

Chidzambwa indicated that they wanted to make history by becoming the first Southern African team to win the CAF competition. He further revealed that, apart from the CAF Confederations Cup matches, his side will play a number of friendly matches as part of their preparations for the new season.

The first matches for the new season will be played over the weekend of August 10 to 12.

Unlike last season, where they commenced their league programme by hosting the Soweto giants, Orlando Pirates, Black Leopards will play against Leopards´ head coach, Mr Sunday Chid- Bloemfontein Celtic at the Peter Mokaba Stadium zambwa. in their opening league match for the new season.

Olympic squad prepares in Limpopo

The South African Olympic rowing squad is in the final stages of their preparations for the 2012 Olympic Games in London in July and August.

And it is all happening in Tzaneen.

Maebane Young Eagles outclassed Maebane Aces United in their Limpopo Dairy derby played at the Maebane grounds on Saturday.

Eagles won 1-0.

The score is not a true reflection of the game, as Eagles were dictating terms in all departments throughout the game. Aces used their height advantage fruitfully by playing high balls from behind.

On the other hand, the home side were let down by their midfielder Humbulani Managa, whose passes were too short to reach their destination.

The home team squandered an obvious chance in the 27th minute when Thapelo Sadiki received a loose ball within the box and shot wide.

The home side left Masala Ramashia in the dressing room and brought up Khangwelo Rambulana in his place. Adolphus Ramarema replaced Ramunna Makhokha in the 78th minute. They finished off their substitution chances by introducing Kedibone Sioga for Phunudzo Mavhusha.

Eagles missed two clear chances early in the second half. Ernest Munyadziwa was the culprit in both instances. The visitors utilised their substitution chance when they introduced Tshungu Sitelele for Livhuwani Sioga.

Sitelele added more life to the fading midfield for Aces with his dribbling skills. Gibson Matlari caught the Aces keeper, Tokelo Ramatjie, off guard and blasted in a half volley from inside the box late in the match.

Matondoni Home Sweepers win Maranzhe soccer tournament Matondoni Home Sweepers were crowned the Maranzhe Youth Day Soccer Tournament champions.

They beat Tshivhilidulu Hungry Lions 4-2 in the final, that was played at the Maranzhe ground last Saturday.

Home Sweepers were presented with a floating trophy, R3 500, gold medals and two soccer balls during a prize-giving ceremony that was held at the grounds after the final match.

Tshivhilidulu Hungry Lions re-

ceived R1 500, silver medals and two soccer balls, while the third-placed side, Maranzhe Hungry Lions, received R700, bronze medals and two soccer balls. The fourth-placed team in the competition, Vondo Vibes, received a consolation prize of R500 and two soccer balls. The individual players whose performances were outstanding during the tournament received prizes during the ceremony.

The top goal scorers, Mukhethwa Masuwanyise and Richard Muluvhu,

both of Maranzhe Hungry Lions, received trophies each in recognition of their scoring two goals apiece. The Man of the Match in each of the four matches, Khuthadzho Khorommbi (Tshivhilidulu Hungry Lions), Takalani Nevondo (Vondo Vibes), Mulisa Sihwili (Maranzhe Hungry Lions) and Sailor Sigudu (Tshivhilidulu Hungry Lions), were also presented with trophies. The best goalkeeper of the tournament was Jeffrey Mafunzwaini of Matondoni Home Sweepers.

Maranzhe Hungry Lions also rewarded their own individual players whose performance was outstanding during the past season. They are: Pfarelo Nemaranzhe (top goal scorer), Mudalo Mbulaheni (players’ player of the season), Mulisa Sihwili (supporters’ player of the season and most improved player), Samuel Khakhu (most disciplined player), Mukhethwa Masuwanyise (chairman’s award) and Mbulaheni Mudalo (player of the season).

Makonde Young Tigers beat Try Again in Mulindavhathu match Makonde Young Tigers collected three points in their Mulindavhathu Soccer Challenge match, when they beat Tshiombo Try Again 2-1 at the Khubvi Benjie's grounds on Sunday afternoon.

As if they were going to give their opponents a free soccer lesson, Try Again were the first to find the net. The game was characterised by wasted scoring opportunities. Young Tigers were the first to regret a missed opportunity. Their slender midfielder, Mulalo Madevha, dribbled past everybody and shot wide from close range.

That was a wake-up call to the players of Try Again. They regrouped from behind, making it difficult for the opponents to win the ball. Their efforts paid off in the 18th minute. Zwanga Maphaha received a beautiful pass from Rofhiwa Mandiwana and unleashed a powerful shot from the penalty area for the first goal of the match.

Things turned against Try Again as the game progressed. Young Tigers did not panic, although no goal was forthcoming, despite their displaying entertaining football. They kept on initiating some dangerous moves from behind, although it was difficult for them to penetrate through the rock-solid defence of Try Again. They finally pulled one back in the 28th minute. Fhumulani Mmboi forced his way through the defence of Try Again and blasted in a rocket.
