Stuck at the border

By Bernard Chiguvare The delays at the Beitbridge Border Post seem to be continuing, and by mid-week, trucks hoping to travel north were queuing for several kilometres. Despite assurances from both governments that the situation is receiving the necessary attention, truck drivers are spending days next to the road, waiting to cross the border.

The problems at the border post started more than a week ago. On Saturday, the queue stretched for almost 11 kilometres from the border post to Musina. This section of the N1 practically turned into a oneway street, and very few trucks parked at the truck-stops.

Other motorists who use this road were left with their own frustrations, having to use an alternative route around this congestion, on gravel roads through farms, which they say is not safe at all.

“This is a very dangerous route. We can be stopped and robbed of our belongings by thugs at any time,” said Given, a Zimbabwean motorist. He said that this gravel road, mostly used by commuters travelling from Musina to the Beitbridge

border, was not exactly suitable for light vehicles. The paths apparently cut across shallow sandy rivers and small bridges, then join the N1 again just before the China mall.

Meanwhile, the truck drivers who stand in queue complain that the situation is unacceptable. They are stuck for days without taking a bath and no toilets are nearby, which means that they have to relieve themselves in the bushes. They must also leave their vehicles next to the road and walk to areas where food vendors are operating to find something to eat or drink.

The reasons for the delays were unclear, but seemingly lie on the Zimbabwean side of the border. Earlier this month, the Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (ZIMRA) activated a new system that manages the tolling of trucks and drivers. The new system, as well as a new bridge that came into operation, seems to be causing massive delays.

Gavin Kelly, from the SA Road Freight Association, told eNews that a lot of finger-pointing appears to be happening at the moment. “What we have been told is that there are problems on the Zimbabwean side in terms of processing through,

and this is now causing a backlog, but the Zimbabweans are saying the trucks are arriving at the border post with the wrong paperwork.”

The Zimbabwean media company, ZBC News, reported on Tuesday that ZIMRA had come up with a raft of measures to ease the pressure that has delayed the movement of trucks at the border post. These measures include creating express lanes for cars to expedite the clearance process, while a holding area for trucks has also been established.

ZIMRA’s acting commissioner general, Rameck Masaire, told ZBC News that the situation was expected to improve within the next 36 hours. A meeting was scheduled between ZIMRA representatives and the chairperson of Zimborders. “Our primary objective as we speak is to put in place modalities that allow traffic to pass through while we are attending to day-to-day operations, so that we don’t have this recurring problem.

We expect this should be done within the next 36 to 48 hours,” he said.

Responding to the problem at hand, Limpopo’s MEC for Transport and Community

Safety, Mavhungu Lerule-Ramakhanya, said: “We understand there is construction work going on on the Zimbabwean side, and they may not have space for the number of trucks that have to cross into Zimbabwe.” She said that, if truck drivers and truck owners adhered to the system that was implemented last year, no long

queues should be experienced.

The Democratic Alliance’s Shadow Minister of Home Affairs, Angel Khanyile, called on the Minister of Home Affairs, Dr Aaron Motsoaledi, to engage with his Zimbabwean counterpart as a matter of urgency to resolve the problems. She also called on the chairperson of the parliamentary portfolio com-

mittee on Home Affairs, Mosa Steve Chabane, to schedule an urgent oversight of the Beitbridge Border Post. “The South African and Zimbabwean economies are both dependent on truck drivers, and they cannot be put in harm’s way because of a failure to plan contingencies during the renovations at the border,” she said.

MEC promises another R30 million to try and finish incomplete roads

Residents in the Sinthumule and Kutama area are complaining about the shoddy construction work and lack of progress that is being made on the rehabilitation of the D959 Road from Louis Trichardt to Makhado Air Force Base.

The six-month project was started in February this year and, less than three months in, construction has been left abandoned, incomplete and already strewn with new potholes in the base layer.

Residents were dismayed when, soon after the project started, the road had been opened even though anyone could clearly see that the construction work was incomplete. This poor effort has left local communities up in arms and they are now pointing furious fingers at the Limpopo MEC for Public Works, Dickson Masemola, accusing him of being “nothing but a charmer who just wanted to capture the confidence of the people”.

Masemola set aside R11.5 million to fix the D959 and D3715 Roads. This job was never finished, leaving residents with the same dangerous roads and many unanswered questions, such as who is now to blame for the

poor condition of the newly “upgraded” road?

After a local community structure went to see the MEC at his office in Polokwane to lay an official complaint about the shoddy rehabilitation done on the D959, and the lack of any work being done on the D3715, Masemola paid a visit to the area on Thursday, 14 October. He met with residents, local structures (including traditional leaders), taxi associations and business forums at the Muduluni Community Hall.

Masemola said that the budget to complete the work was set at R30 million rand and would be done in two phases. He said that planning would begin in order to have the patching up and rehabilitation work done within the current financial year, and that the rehabilitation process would start as soon as this week, from 18 to 22 October.

He said that the communities must work hand in hand with the contractor, so that progress on the development could be seen by all.

He added that he would meet with the engineer working on the D959 Road to give him (Masemola) a report on the progress made. Masemola warned contractors in Limpopo in this regard. He said that the provincial government was working on a system to blacklist contractors who continued to do shoddy work and claim money for incomplete projects.

He said that the complaints about the unfinished and shoddy work on the D959 Road would be investigated.

“We have representatives in that area, and they should notify us if they encounter problems,” he said. Masemola said that they were going to use 5% of the project’s budget to hire local contractors to work on the road.

The chairperson of the Zoutpansberg Community Development Forum (ZCDF), Mr Patrick Sikhutshi, and the Secretary of the Sinthumule/ Kutama Concerned Group (SKCG), formerly known as the Sinthumule/Kutama Crisis Committee, Mr Elijah Liremi, were happy about Masemola’s promises.

The councillor of the Economic Freedom Fighters in the Makhado Municipality, Ms Tshilidzi Maraga, described Masemola as a “reckless leader who does not care for the lives of the people of Vhembe”. She blamed him for opening the poorly constructed and unfinished D959 Road prematurely.

“Masemola has a total disregard for people’s lives. How can a right-minded person open a road which he knows could put people’s lives at risk?

What if people were killed?” she asked. “These people have failed the province and they are now putting the lives of the people in danger in the name of service delivery. We are not going to let this matter die down without scrutiny. We will take it up in the legislature,” said a fuming Maraga.

News about the drowning hit the village, as well as neighbouring villages, in no time via social media and soon the dam was swarming with curious onlookers. The dam is believed to have swallowed many people through drownings.

Police spokesperson Brig Motlafela Mojapelo confirmed the incident. “We have opened an inquest docket and ask residents again, especially children, not to venture into deep waters - either for fishing or swimming - as the rivers hold more dangers than drowning. They can also be attacked by water animals like crocodiles and hippos,” he said.

He appealed to parents to tell their children not to play alongside streams, dams or on riverbanks, or swim without the supervision of older people.

Man accused of killing his brother over R350 Covid grant dispute

By Silas Nduvheni A 39-year-old man from Mukula-Thembaluvhilo village appeared in the Thohoyandou Magistrate’s Court on Monday, facing a charge of murder. He had allegedly beaten his older brother to death with a steel rod last Wednesday (13th).

Family spokesperson and eldest brother in the family Mr David Goma told the media that the deceased, Erick Ramudzuli (45) went on a traditional-beer drinking spree called Halwa ha mahafhe in Mukula after he had received his R350 Covid-19 Social Relief Grant. While the unemployed Erick was happily drinking, his younger brother, Maanda Ramudzuli (39), approached him, wanting a share of Erick’s money.

A fierce fight broke out between the

brothers, but people were able to break it up and get them to calm down.

According to Goma, the fight ended at the drinking spree and the brothers went home. However, not long after they got home, they started to fight again, and Maanda allegedly hit Erick with a sharp steel rod. Erick was rushed to the local clinic where he was certified dead on arrival.

Limpopo police spokesperson Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo said that the accused already had a criminal record.

In 2002, he raped a minor and was sentenced to 15 years’ imprisonment.

In 2011, he was again charged with rape, and in 2014 he was charged with murder after stabbing a 61-year-old man to death.

Goma described Erick as a peace-loving person, while Maanda was called

the “troublesome younger brother”. He said that the family regrettably did not take Erick’s complaints seriously when he told them that Maanda abused him.

One time Erick claimed that he had been sodomized by Maanda several times.

Khotsimunene Rudzani Takalani, the spokesperson for the Takalani traditional leadership, said the fact that an ex-offender such as Maanda got parole and was walking the streets was worrisome.

According to him, convicted criminals on parole should be monitored, lest they commit other crimes.

Maanda Ramudzuli’s case was postponed to 25 October while he remains in custody.

Ramudzuli was buried on Wednesday, 20 October, in the Mukula-Thembaluvhilo graveyard.

This is an effort to bring other units of the university into this partnership, so that different expertise from the campus can now be deployed into the various programmes that the university wants to run in partnership with traditional councils. So far, six traditional councils are involved, namely Sinthumule, Njhakanjhaka, Tshivhase, Manenzhe, Masia, and Madonsi. “We have a number of issues in the community that we can turn into projects, but we are unable to deal with such issues.

We need to be taught how to plan the process,” said Chief Samuel Mukhari, further adding that several graduates from around Elim had benefited since the commencement of this relationship, with a number of them working under the Department of Social Development.

Unemployed graduates who attended the meeting expressed hope of getting employed through such a programme.

“I see this relationship as an opportunity to create employment. I graduated in 2018 and since then have not been employed,” said Moland Tshilaluke. He studied international relations but has been working as a minibus taxi driver for the past month.

Expressing her frustration, Pfuxani Baloyi (34) said she had studied marketing management with Vhembe TVET College and completed her studies in 2012, but she had still not been employed.

“I hope this is going to create some form of employment, so that we can also be involved and get experience. This experience will help us get into the working class,” Baloyi said.

New leader for Khubvi-Tshiseluselu

“We want the new traditional leader to be on the forefront of

developments in his village as communities need better roads, electricity and water,” Tshivhase said.

He was joined by Khosi Thinawanga Randima and other traditional leaders and elders for the inauguration of Randima on Saturday, 9 October, at the Khubvi-Tshiseluselu sports grounds.

Ankonisaho Randima was named khadzi and Ndalamo Randima ndumi.

Khosi Thinawanga Randima said he was happy that this section of Tshiseluselu also had a leader to look after its people again.

Vhamusanda Tshinyiwaho II Randima pledged to dedicate himself to serving the community, and to seek God’s wisdom to rule diplomatically, without nepotism. The chief succeeded his late father, Vhamusanda Tshinyiwaho I Randima, who died in 2020.

Makhado’s AG report may be unqualified, but it’s far from being good

By Anton van Zyl Earlier this month, the Makhado Municipality was awarded a certificate and a trophy by the SA Local Government Association (SALGA) for achieving an unqualified audit opinion during the 2019/20 financial year.

The award came as a bit of a surprise to many residents who felt that all is not that well in the local municipality.

The unqualified opinion is an improvement on previous years when Makhado varied between an adverse opinion and a qualified opinion. The latest report, however, also highlights many of the problems the municipality battles with.

The Limpopo Mirror obtained a copy of the report to find out exactly what the Auditor-General (AG) had to say about Makhado’s finances.

We also looked at what an unqualified opinion means.

Unqualified is … slightly above the average The AG, according to its website, actually expresses five opinions on the financial state of institutions such as municipalities. At the top end is a Clean Audit Outcome, which means all is fine and taxpayers can trust the municipality with their hard-earned money. In Limpopo, only the Capricorn District Municipality could get close to this, with an unqualified opinion with no matter of emphasis.

At the bottom of the scale is a Disclaimer of Audit Opinion, which means that the record-keeping was so poor that the AG did not even want

to express an opinion. The Vhembe District Municipality received such a disclaimer up to 2017/18.

Slightly better than a disclaimer of opinion is an Adverse Audit Opinion. In this case, the AG was provided with paperwork, but it contained lots of errors. These misstatements also represent a substantial portion of the financial statements. Makhado received such an opinion in 2016/17.

Up to the 2019/20 financial year, the “most popular” opinion among Limpopo municipalities was the Qualified Audit Opinion. In the 2018/19 financial year, 18 out of the 27 municipalities fell in this category, which improved to only 10 in 2019/20. The Vhembe District Municipality received such a report, indicating that not enough evidence existed that expenses were incurred or income collected.

The “almost there” category is the Financially Qualified Audit Opinion. This means that the financial statements contain no material misstatements, but problems have been raised. These issues can mean non-compliance with legislation or that findings had been raised concerning predetermined objectives.

In the 2019/20 year, four of Vhembe’s municipalities fell in this category.

The AG once again points out that the municipality suffers huge losses with the selling of electricity. In 2018/19, this loss was R39,97 million, but thankfully came down to “only” R26,93 million. This represents 10% of the total electricity purchased.

Another concern of the AG is the municipality’s exposure to litigation. The municipality is the defendant in various lawsuits. “The municipality is opposing the claims, as it believes that the claims have no basis,” writes the AG. In its annual financial statements, the municipality mentions that the potential extent of the liability cannot be determined, since the matters are subject to litigation. The provisional estimate based on management assessment is R102 million.

The AG also checked whether the Makhado Municipality had achieved the objects it had set out at the beginning of the period. The number of indigent households provided with free electricity was found not to be 7 560 as reported, but only 6 720. The fencing of cemeteries at Gogobole, Phadzima, Vleifontein and Tshivhase had not progressed as planned.

Reasonable steps were also not taken to prevent unauthorised expenditure amounting to R60,5 million. “The majority of the unauthorised expenditure was caused by inappropriate budgeting of non-cash items during the financial year,” says the AG. The misuse of fuel cards by officials received a special mention by the AG. This fruitless and wasteful expenditure cost the taxpayers R232 213.

The AG also felt that very little consequence management existed as “appropriate action was not taken against officials of the municipality where investigations proved financial misconduct”.

It’s the fault of (mis)management The AG criticised the municipality for getting rid of capital assets without having considered a fair market value of the assets and the economic and community value to be received in exchange for the assets.

The report mentions “significant internal control deficiencies” in the municipality. “Management did not exercise its oversight responsibility regarding financial and performance reporting and compliance and related internal controls,” the report reads.

According to the AG reports, the Makhado Municipality’s management did not implement controls over daily and monthly processing and reconciling of transactions. The AG ascribed some of the problems to capacity constraints in the municipality, which resulted in insufficient reviews performed.

“Non-compliance with legislation could have been prevented had compliance been properly reviewed and monitored. The municipality did not take reasonable steps to prevent irregular and unauthorised expenditure and fruitless and wasteful expenditure,” the report states.

In her summary on the state of municipalities, AG Tsakani Maluleke was clearly dissatisfied with the progress shown by municipalities: “Audit results under the

outgoing administration have demonstrated little sign of improvement and we have observed the deteriorating state of local government. When it took over, the administration inherited 33 clean audits. Unfortunately, it has now regressed to only 27 clean audits. We therefore call on leadership to embrace their responsibility to drive change if we are to make a difference,” says Maluleke.

As far as Limpopo is concerned, the picture looks slightly better, “The province recorded an improvement in audit outcomes, mainly driven by consultants. However, this improvement is not supported by an equal improvement in the key control environment at the municipalities and might therefore not be sustainable,” the AG says.

She ends up by appealing to the leadership to start acting responsibly. “We reiterate our message that ‘ethical and accountable leadership should drive the required change’, and we call on the incoming leadership to take this message to heart if they aim to realise improved outcomes.”

Good Samaritan asks people to join hands in helping a brother in need

By Kaizer Nengovhela A businessman and runner from Gauteng, Mr Daniel Ndouvhada, ran 100km from Donald Frazer Hospital to Gogobole on Saturday, 9 October, to raise funds to help build Mpho “Mkhondo” Mudau of Gogobole a new house.

Mpho suffers from a mental instability and lives alone in a dilapidated shack with no proper windows and a leaking roof that often gets blown off by strong winds. He has no cooking pot or stove and sleeps on a pile of flimsy, torn blankets. People often see him walking around town, talking to himself. Because of his men-

tal state he has no job, and noone offers to help him because people say he is “crazy”.

Ndouvhada read about Mpho’s plight in the Limpopo Mirror (15 August) and felt he had to do something to help the man. He came up with a fundraiser and volunteered to run the 100km, so that they can build Mpho a decent house. “I am sad to say that the response from donors was not as well received as we had hoped. We will need a few more donors to help with building materials or cash to purchase the materials. Any form of assistance is welcome and would be greatly appreciated,” he said.

Mudau says he had informed

his local structures about his plight, but so far, no help had come forth. “I do not want luxury. I just need proper shelter.

I will be the happiest person on earth,” he said, with pain written all over his face.

Cllr Matodzi Ramushaba of Ward 22 in Makhado said they were aware of Mpho’s situation. “We visited him not long ago and found that his situation was bad. We are making an appeal to all businesspeople who can help to please open their hearts and extend a helping hand,” she said.

Mutshidzi is a Grade 5 pupil at Mariadze Primary School.

She entered the competition to build the necessary confidence, as she thought it might come in handy for her in future.

After she emerged as one of the semi-finalists, Limpopo Beauty Modelling School tasked her with launching a charity project, and Mutshidzi decided to start helping learners from other vulnerable families – especially those in the care of old grannies – with their homework. This is how she spends her time after school and during weekends.

In the village of Mashau, no public library exists. Mutshidzi says she would like to build a library for her community one day if she happens to collect enough donations or money she wins from competitions.

Meanwhile, she looks forward to be among the finalists, who are expected to be announced next month.

Mafula is an album for all people

After five years together, Tshimangadzo Junior Mutheiwana finally tied the knot with Masindi Tiny Raedane during a beautiful white wedding ceremony in the Thathe forest on Saturday, 19 October. Univen student inspires fellow youths through his songs

By Bernard Chiguvare Ronewa Brian Manyaga, a third-year Youth Development student at the University of Venda, wants to address certain issues that young people are struggling with today through his music.

The 20-year-old Manyaga, who hails from the Makwarela area, comes from a vulnerable family and is studying for his BA degree via a bursary. He also writes and records music on the side.

“So many young people are involved with drugs and miss out on education and

life-changing opportunities,” Manyaga said. “They seem to be ignorant. Even when they are well informed on the dangers of drugs, they continue to do the opposite.”

Manyaga, popularly known as RMB Code Green, believes that his music can be a real game-changer to inspire the youth. “The degree that I am studying for at Univen is mostly about helping young people deal with certain challenges. Being a youth myself, I realised that I am better informed than older people to reach out to other youths, and knowing the kind of challenges they face gives me a chance to

also analyse and find a solution, which I try to address through my songs,” he said.

He has just released a seven-track album titled Spring, and is looking forward to doing more to inspire his fellow youths.

In addressing drug abuse, Manyaga said, “I really believe that one should be open about the situation to relatives or friends. This is the first step in the right direction. Though government is making an attempt, I feel they have to visit schools more. They must also create more sports grounds where the youth can spend more time playing soccer and take part in other games.”

Manyaga is following in the footsteps of American rapper Tupac Shakur.

Acolly Mandiza scoops up Best Tshivenda hit song at Limpopo Music Awards

Mandiza was pitched against heavyweights such as Ramzeey, Vendaboy Poet, Mutendasi and Elvis Mandiza. “I am very excited about this award,” he said. “It shows growth in progress for me, and I would like to thank God Almighty for making it possible for me to win. I also thank all my loyal fans who voted for me.”

Mmbengwa is from his latest album, Makhelwane, which was released on 27 May this year.

Mandiza won the same award in 2019 for his song Shambo la Shambo. “I am so thankful to God for winning that award, as I knew it was the beginning of my professional journey as a musician,” he said.

In 2020, his album Khokhonya was nominated in two categories at the

Tshivenda Music Awards, namely Best Afro Soul Album of the Year and Best Producer of the Year. “Unfortunately, I did not win but I kept believing in my talents and knew that it was not the end of my journey,” he said.

He is currently celebrating his tenth anniversary in the music industry. “Early this year, the community of Ha-Muraga gave me a certificate as a token of motivation for putting our village on the map,” he said. “This shows that people love what I do, and that is why I won, even when I doubted that I would, because I have such great support from the community I come from.”

Best Presenter award for Jantiby Nefale Veteran Phalaphala FM presenter Mpho “Jantiby” Nefale was awarded the Best Presenter trophy during the Vhavenda Acknowledgement Awards held at Thavhani Mall last Saturday.

After working behind the mic for 39 years, Nefale is a highly professional radio DJ with excellent planning and organisational skills.

He is also a good communicator with excellent interpersonal relations, works well under pressure, shows lots of initiative and can work independently. He enjoys doing the station’s actuality programme, called Devhula Ha Vhembe, on Saturdays from 18:00 to 21:00.

“One thing about radio is that you work 24/7.

Wherever you are, you are on duty, because if something happens related to the news, you need to report on it,” he said.

Nefale made his official entrance into the radio industry at Radio Venda back in 1984.

His programme, Devhula Ha Vhembe, started in 1985. He worked at the station with the likes of Razz Matazz Mashige, Pastor Isaac Dagada, Andries Mueda, GJ Sadiki, and TJ Munonde, to mention but a few.

He ascribes his success and achievements to hard work and striving for the best in a career that demands a lot of discipline and determination. Radio represents a wider platform for him to express his ideas and he increasingly dreams of asserting himself as a key player in the media industry.

It gives Nefale an opportunity to interact with big shots in sporting circles globally. “What I like about the show is that it is friendly, and we interact with our listeners.”

One important thing he had learnt in radio journalism, he says, is that you must always be prepared to learn a thing or two from your interactions with the public. This is also true of his character, as he is an informer, entertainer, and educator, but most of all the voice that accompanies listeners. Nefale’s listeners are very important to him, and he says he will always appreciate the support they give him.

MEC visits three bus depots in town

By Bernard Chiguvare Limpopo MEC for Transport and Community Safety Mavhungu Lerule Ramakhanya paid a courtesy visit to three locally operating bus companies in Louis Trichardt last Thursday and was happy to report that the services of Mabirimisa, Do Light and Great North Transport are up to standard.

The visit formed part of National Transport Month, aimed at interacting with public transport operators and understanding the challenges they deal with. “I am happy that these operators are on course. All three bus companies work according to programmes

to make sure their fleets are maintained. Each one of them has an in-house mechanic who checks on faults. Faults are recorded and attended to before their next trip,” the MEC said, reminding them to keep sanitising and disinfecting their buses properly and regularly.

The bus operators were very impressed with Ramakhanya’s visit, as they said she was the first MEC for Transport and Community Safety to visit their depots. They appreciated the chance to present their challenges to her.

Their main challenges, it seems, concern the state of roads, subsidising of roads and validity of permits for certain routes. The department some-

times issues only temporary permits, valid for six months, which makes future business planning very difficult, they said.

“The state of some of the roads is very bad and it raises the cost of maintenance,” said Vongi Kotane, administration manager for Do Light Transport. He said that the company had at one point considered withdrawing its services from certain routes because of the poor roads. “But we said to ourselves: People before profit,” said Kotane.

Ramakhanya acknowledged the challenges and said she would see to it that the necessary attention was given to them.

The pageant was held at the Khunda Village Lodge and organised by Barcelona Modelling Agency two weeks ago.

Kamogelo, a resident of Matoks along the N1, said that she had not expected to win the crown. “It is thanks to Barcelona Modelling Agency, who trained me thoroughly, that I was able to perform so well,” she said.

Kamogelo is flanked by first princess Fulufhelo Muravha (18) from Elim and second princess Tendani Munyai (17) from Itsani.

Zwavhudi, who hails from Dopeni village, started modelling two years ago when she was in Grade 6. She had previously won some beauty contests at primary school level as she represented her school. “I am excited about winning this prize,” she said. “I spent the next day crying tears of joy.

I was pitched against highly talented young and upcoming models, and yet I happened to make it!”

The term ‘cyberbullying’ refers to bullying via SMS, email, WhatsApp or any other online social media platform where people can view, participate in, or share content, like Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, or Tik Tok. It includes sending, posting or sharing negative, harmful, false or mean content about someone else. It may include sharing personal or private information about someone else, causing embarrassment or humiliation.

To address this serious problem, the Department of Correctional Services’ Management Area Youth officials in Thohoyandou recently hosted a Cyberbullying Awareness Session for the pupils at Tshikwarani Primary School in Madombidzha village to educate learners more on cyberbullying, but also to discourage them from any kind of bullying.

Ms Tshimangadzo Mabasa, a social worker from Makhado Correctional Centre, explained the serious consequences of bullying. “Bullying each other is a serious offence, which can lead to imprisonment. You can be arrested and sentenced to jail for being involved in cyberbullying,” Mabasa warned. “If you are found guilty, your whole future will be jeopardised because you will have a criminal record for the rest of your life, which will make it difficult for you to ever get a decent job.”

Mr Steven Mabuda, a parolee under Sibasa Community Corrections, was also given an opportunity to share his prison life with the learners and explain the dangers and disadvantages of having a criminal record. “I am here today to tell you that no crime pays. I beseech those of you who might be involved in bullying to stop, as we have already seen incidents around Vhembe where learners have taken their own lives because of it.”

Mabuda said that he used to be a bully who took other people’s property by force, and that he was eventually arrested and sentenced to fifteen years’ imprisonment. “I plead with you learners to stop bullying each other because you will be arrested and prison life is not good at all,” he said. “In prison there is no freedom like at home.”

Mr Tulu Sadiki, a teacher at Tshikwarani Primary School, thanked the DCS Youth officials, who aim to leave a positive stamp on learners, for their insightful visit, and encouraged the pupils to take these messages they have received to heart.

Madombidzha Try Again managed to boot Madombidzha Arsenal out of the Traschrima tournament on Sunday by beating them 2-0 at the Madombidzha Grounds.

Arsenal played entertaining football from behind throughout the game, but their strikers fumbled at the goal finish. Arsenal took just nine minutes to realize that things were not going their way. Their front runner, Ntendeni Ratshikhopha, could not live up to his reputation as a natural striker because he was tightly marked by Rotshidzwa Phathela.

Try Again gained momentum as the game progressed. They were awarded a free kick in the 24th minute. Tshianeo Funzani was obstructed within the box and the referee awarded a free kick.

Sibusiso Ramalata took it upon himself to take the free kick and hit the back of the net.

The goal did not demoralize Arsenal as they continued to play like a united team, creating some promising moves from the middle of the park. Try Again increased the margin in the 39th minute.

This was after Arsenal started to set offside traps. Arehone Mbodi beat the offside-trap and sent the Arsenal keeper the wrong way.

Mikhado oust Ablex after penalty shootout

By Kaizer Nengovhela Mikhado FC beat Ablex FC 5-4 on Saturday during their ABC Motsepe preliminary Nedbank Cup match played at the Rabali Stadium. The match ended in a 1-1 draw and the winner was decided via a penalty shootout.

The game was played at a see-saw pace, with both sides creating and wasting scoring chances. The visitors from Ha-Kutama (Ablex) enjoyed most of the ball possession in

the first 15 minutes.

Nkhetheni Maliboho, Ablex’s centre back, was the first player who went into the referee’s book after he had handled the ball intentionally. The referee, Mr Rennie Sekhula, was lenient enough not to let him see red.

The absence of many players in the Mikhado FC defence was felt from the onset. Tristan Cox could not make the grade, as the opponents used him as their freeway.

If a soccer match could

be won through the number of scoring chances a team creates, Ablex would have won the match convincingly.

By Frank Mavhungu Mikhado FC beat Mpheni Home Defenders 4-1 at the Rabali Stadium on Saturday to secure a place in the provincial semi-finals of the Nedbank Cup competition.

Mikhado took only six minutes to stamp their authority on the match. Their bulldozer striker,

The provincial Nedbank Cup champions will be known on Saturday afternoon. The semi-final and final matches of this prestigious competition will be staged at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium.

The group-stage matches were played at various venues throughout the province over the past weekend.

Teams that had finished on top of their respective groups are: Ngwabe City Motors, Blackpool FC, Phinnet FC and Mikhado FC. The opening match will be between Blackpool FC and Mikhado FC at 09:00. Mikhado beat Ablex United and Mpheni Home Defenders on their way to the semi-final stage. The winner in

their game against Ablex United was determined through penalty shootout after a 1-1 draw at the end of regulation time. They crushed Mpheni Home Defenders 4-1 in their second group-stage match.

Mikhado will be without their right back, Piere Mpumelelo, when they face Blackpool. Mpumelelo was given his marching orders in their game against Mpheni Home Defenders at the Rabali Stadium last Saturday.

The likes of Fusi Matlaba, Yanga Tenza and the team’s top goal scorer, Lungelo Bidi, will be expected to do the job in the absence of Mpumelelo.
