The normally relaxed atmosphere in the dusty Ha-Khakhu village in the Nzhelele area came to an abrupt end last Tuesday when a local dog was spotted feeding on a piece of meat which later turned out to be a human leg. Police suspect that the leg may be part of the body of a 47-year-old man who went missing over a month ago.

The owner of the dog, Mr Andries Mbulaheni, said he was surprised when he realised that the thing his dog was eating was the leg of a person. “I received the shock of my life. I couldn’t believe my eyes. I thought I was dreaming at first, but I then realised that what I was looking at was a real human leg. I had never seen such a thing before,” said Mbulaheni.

Members of the community, however, suspect that the leg belonged to somebody who had been murdered for muti purposes.

Colonel Ronnie van Niekerk, the station commander for the Siloam police station, confirmed the incident. He said that the dog was found at around 17: 05. “We were called by community members after the discovery. When we arrived at the scene, a human leg was lying on the ground, with dogs next to it. I couldn’t believe my eyes, but it was a human leg,” said Van Niekerk.

Woman allegedly raped and killed Clouds of sadness still hang around the Nzhelele area, after a 28-year-old woman was allegedly raped and severely beaten and left to die during the past week.

According to the police, Ms Rendani Mphephu was crossing the Pfumbada Bridge when Lesley Maanda (26), who is said to be her ex-lover, approached her.

It is alleged a disagreement between the two escalated into an argument that resulted in a fight.

It is said that Maanda allegedly attacked Ms Mphephu, severely

injuring her. She was rushed to the nearby Siloam Hospital, where she died last Monday.

According to the police report, Mphephu had sustained serious injuries.

The spokesperson for the Mphephu Police, W/O Lazarus Netshidzati confirmed the incident. “When the police arrived at the scene, the deceased was lying on the ground. She could not talk nor walk,” he said.

Netshidzati said that Mphephu was then taken to the hospital, where she spent days in a coma before she died. He added that a case of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and rape had been opened with the police.

The family of the deceased expressed their concerns about the Mphephu’s death. They said that they were saddened about her death and still reeling from the shock. “She did not deserve to die like this. The incident has disturbed every member of the family. It is difficult for us to accept the loss,” said Makhadzi Vho-Tshinakaho Khorombi.

Khorombi, who is the deceased’s aunt, had been taking care of her since she was a child, following the death of her mother. “I couldn’t believe my eyes, watching her lying helplessly in the hospital bed. She couldn’t move or say anything.

It was very disturbing,” she stressed.

Pfumbada Bridge is the same bridge where the 27-year-old Given Maduvha had allegedly stabbed and killed his ex-lover, Ms Mashudu Khumela (22) on June 16.

Mphephu is survived by her two children. She was laid to rest at Tshitunitshafhasi village’s cemetery last Saturday.

by the executive mayor of the Vhembe District Municipality, Cllr Florence Dzhombere, at an ceremony that was held at Lalapanzi Hotel outside Louis Trichardt.

Welcoming the tourists, Dzhombere said that, as Africans, people should celebrate their food and the clothes they wear. “Encourage all to wear traditional clothes. People must raise and promote the national flag. We also need to know where we are coming from, so that we can know where we are going,” said Dzhombere.

Eighty tourists, which included

people from various parts of the SADC Region, joined the tour.

These included tour operators, tour guides, representatives from travel agencies, tour product developers and journalists.

The tour will end with a cultural festival that will take place at the Louis Trichardt Show Grounds tomorrow (Saturday).

It will be followed by a music festival that will start at 18:00 at the same venue. Veteran artists such as Thomas Chauke and the Shinyori Sisters, Colbert Mukwevho, Zozo and the Sengere Brothers and many more will participate.

Dedicated ANC member laid to rest A charismatic, disciplined and dedicated community builder, Mr Emanuel “Vavi” Muswobi (34), died last week after a short illness.

Muswobi, a resident of Mauluma in the Nzhelele area, was working as a community development worker at the time of his death. He was laid to rest at the village’s local cemetery last Saturday.

He was the secretary of the Alpheus Malivha Branch of the Young Communist League.

He started his primary education at Mauluma Primary and is a graduate from the University of Venda, where he served as a secretary of the South African Student Congress. Muswobi was a member of the provincial ex-

ecutive committee of the Young Communist League of Limpopo.

The provincial general secretary of the ANC, Mr Joe Maswanganyi, said it was bad that they had lost somebody who knew what it meant to be a member of the ANC. “He followed the role played by other leaders of the organization. He knew that the ANC does not belong to certain individuals and he fought for this idea,” said Maswanganyi.

He added that Muswobi understood that serving at the party structures was a privilege. “We really lost a leader who was committed to taking services to the people,” Maswanganti stressed.

Mr Rudzani Mushweu, a member of the provincial executive committee of the ANCYL, de-

picted Muswobi as a true leader of the progresive youth alliance because he knew the role of each member structure.

Community prays for accidents to stop The ever-increasing number of accidents at Tsia-Mutsha has prompted the community to seek divine intervention.

Since last year, at least 15 people have lost their lives on the busy road that runs through the two villages. The deaths have left many families without breadwinners and with unbearable pain and suffering to the closely knit community.

Realizing there was no end to the carnage, a prayer meeting attended by pastors from different denominations, traffic officials,

the royal family and members of the community in the two villages was held at the Gwamasenga sports field on Saturday.

The meeting, an initiative of the Tsianda Pastors Forum under the leadership of Pastor Prince Ramahala of the Tsianda Full Gospel Church, targeted spots where accidents are most common. Pastors and members of the community took turns in praying for an end to the carnage.

Ramahala said they had tried everything in the book to stop the mayhem on the roads, but

had failed. ‘”We have witnessed many of our people being killed on this road. We have approached the relevant stakeholders, but we felt that we should report this to the Most High, who sees everything in this world. He will help us in stopping this carnage,” he said.

“There is nothing that beats the power of prayer. We can do all as human beings, but without the help from above, we will never succeed. Accidents will continue happening; we need divine intervention,” he said.

Man gets 50 years for raping niece

The event took place at the Cape Town International Convention Centre the past weekend. The annual Highway Africa conference is attended by hundreds of media practitioners, academics and NGOs involved in media projects from across Africa. The highlight of the event is the Telkom Highway Africa New Media awards, which were handed over on Sunday night. Zoutnet entered the Newsfiler news management system that the company helped develop over the past two years. This open-source system makes use of a browser-based interface and brings together all aspects of news gathering and editing. Among other features, it makes it possible for journalists to post stories from any location. The judges were so impressed with the system that they awarded it first prize in the corporate category. Decomposed body found at Rabali village Police have once again warned members of the community not to jump to conclusions and state that a ritual murder had taken place, long before an autopsy had been done to determine the cause of death. This follows the discovery of a decomposed body last Tuesday at Rabali village.

The body of Mr Albert Ndanduleni Mudau was recovered by members of the community, who were collecting fire wood. Mudau was reported missing on October 14 last year. Since then, his relatives, together with the police, had been searching for him all over the area, with no luck.

Residents of the area immediately started spreading rumours that the man had been killed for muti purposes. The 49-year-old Mudau was identified by his family through the clothes he was wearing when he went missing.

The residents allege that the fact that his clothes were found far away from the body clearly shows that he was murdered. They allege that some parts were missing

from his body.

W/O Lazarus Netshidzati of the Mphephu police confirmed that Mudau was found dead. “We had opened a file of a missing person last year. We tried searching all over the place for him, but to no avail. On Tuesday, we received a call from the residents, informing us that the man we had been looking for was found dead in the bushes,” he said.

According to Netshidzati, an inquest docket was opened. He further confirmed that Mudau’s body had already decomposed when it was recovered. “We have taken his remains to the Tshilidzini Hospital for a forensic investigation, while the police investigation continues,” he said.

Netshidzati, however, warned the residents not to point fingers.

“Investigations will reveal the cause of the deceased’s death, so people must be very patient and cooperative in the process,” he said. Netshidzati dismissed claims that it was a ritual murder, saying that one cannot say that body parts had been removed,

while the body had already decomposed when it was recovered.

“The allegations are barbaric and people should stop this behaviour of pointing fingers,” he stressed.

Family members said that Mudau told them that he was going to buy some milk at a local supermarket in the village and never returned.

Post-mortem results were, however, not yet available at the time of going to press.

Mudau was laid to rest at the village’s cemetery last Saturday.

Case against Ludere and others postponed Tsepo Moepi (39) of Seshego, Alfred Nkuna (40) of Mamelodi, Lesetja Reuben Moloto (39) of Polokwane, Christopher Maleka of Polokwane and Jeffrey Nnkwamato Maphala (45) also of Mamelodi. Maphala, however, was not present. No explanation regarding his whereabouts could be provided.

Their appearance follows Moepi and Nkuna’s arrest in December last year. According to information available, the two were arrested after local police received a tip-off regarding a planned robbery. A 33-year-old Beit Bridge resident was recently sentenced to an effective 50 years in jail for raping his niece several times before severely stabbing her and her four children while they were asleep.

He also robbed the woman of her generator, an inverter and a solar panel.

The man pleaded not guilty to three counts of rape and another three counts of attempted murder when he appeared before Regional Magistrate Owen Tagu.

He was sentenced to 10 years in jail for the first count of attempted murder, which will run concurrently with the 20 years of rape. He was further slapped with 10 years each on the other two counts of attempted murder.

The prosecutor, Mr Johannes Tlou, said that on the night of January 5, the man went to the woman’s homestead. On arrival, he went to the kitchen where he armed himself with a knife before gaining entry into the woman’s bedroom through the window.

It was testified that inside the room he found the woman sleeping with her four children. He demanded money from the complainant, who said that she did not have any cash with her. The man then ordered the victims to get out of their blankets and stabbed the woman several times all over her body.

He then later turned on the woman’s children, one of them a six year-old girl, and severely stabbed them with the knife.

The woman managed to unlock the door and stormed out of the house. He caught up with her, however, and raped her at knifepoint.

The court was told that soon after that, Ndou forced the woman back to her bedroom where he raped her twice more before robbing her of a dieselpowered generator, an inverter and a solar panel.

A report was made to the police, leading to his arrest. The victims sustained injuries all over their bodies and they were taken to the Beit Bridge District Hospital for treatment.

The case against a well-known businessman from Madombidza, Prince Mulalo Ludere, was yet again postponed on Monday. This time he was present in the Louis Trichardt Regional court.

Ludere recently made headlines when police wanted to question him on single counts of rape and attempted murder that were brought against him by a local woman. These cases were later withdrawn against him.

It was during this court appearance that Maphala and Ludere failed to appear in court “due to medical reasons.” Warrants for their arrest were issued but held over by the court to give them time to hand in a doctor’s certificate as proof that they were sick.

All six men were warned to have their funds and instructions to their legal representatives in order. Their case was postponed until October 4.

Hope for thirsty after R700m lifeline for Nandoni The visit by the National Council of Provinces (NCOP) in Vhembe has revived hope that residents could soon be drinking clean water from the nearby Nandoni Dam. This transpired during an interaction between the Dumasi community and members of NCOP, the Department of Water Affairs, and the Vhembe and Thulamela Municipality. The meeting was held at a local church last week Wednesday.

This was part of Provincial Week, which is designed to give permanent delegates to the NCOP and members of provincial legislatures (MPLs) an opportunity to undertake oversight visits and interact with communities in order to get first-hand information on the delivery of services.

They also visit projects that are implemented by both national and provincial government.

Under the theme Parliament in Action - advancing citizen involvement in

addressing service delivery challenges in our communities, they visited Tshilidzini Hospital, one of the oldest hospitals in the province, the Nandoni Dam, before moving on to Mutale, Musina and the Makhado municipal area.

Communities who stay next to the R2,1-billion Nandoni Dam in Vhembe welcomed the visit by the delegation and are hopeful that their plight of having no water with a dam next to them, would be addressed.

Since its completion in 2004, the dam has not provided water to the nearby communities, who are hard hit by drought.

After a grilling by the NCOP chairman, Mninwa Johannes Mahlangu, and his delegation about the water problems facing the communities, Mr Alson Matukane, the director of water affairs in Limpopo, gave hope to communities when he announced that an amount of R700 million has been put aside to adress the challenges at Nandoni.

Matukane said it had come to their attention that the pipes that were used in the project were of poor quality and that the department was in the process of prosecuting the previous contractor for poor workmanship in order to recoup the funds.

He said the litigation was taking too long and this was the reason why additional funds were made available to erect parallel pipes, so as to speed up the provision of water in the area. "We have approached the treasury and funds have been made available. We are now in the process of appointing a new contractor and we are hopeful that, by March 2012, residents of this area will be using water from Nandoni," said Matukane.

The executive mayor of the Vhembe District Municipality, Cllr Florence Dzhombere, asked the Department of Water Affairs to commit itself because each time it was shifting the goal posts as to when people would get water.

Newborn border baby found in a dustbin An immigration officer got the shock of his life last week when he discovered a newborn baby in a dustbin at the Beit Bridge Border Post.

Police and the emergency staff were immediately summoned to the scene and the baby was sent to Messina Hospital, where she is being taken care of.

The baby, who has now become the darling of nurses at the hospital, has been kept at the hospital’s maternity ward. Nurses have named her Nyimelo, a Venda word which means "situation".

W/O Peter Mudau of the Musina SAPS confirmed the incident and added that police were still Little Nyimelo lies innocently in Messina looking for the mother of the baby.

“We received the shocking news that a baby was discovered in a dustbin and we rushed there. The baby was covered in a plastic bag, and we thank God that she did not suffocate. We took the baby to Messina Hospital, where she is being taken care of.”

Mudau encouraged mothers with problems not to dump their babies.

“Mothers should look for professional help.

Our social workers are always there to assist.

The law will never be lenient on parents who dump babies because it is a very serious offence.

Success for youths’ agriculture project July 11, 2005 was a memorable day which totally changed the lives for the eight members of the Musina Youth Project. That was when the then MEC for Agriculture, Dikeledi Magadzi, launched their project.

Project members were in jovial mood as they received a building and R42 000 worth of vouchers to kickstart their initiative.

Project leader Stanford Khuele said there were 25 members when they started. “Some of our members left, but the eight of us persevered because we knew what we were doing. We are happy today because we have created jobs for ourselves and we can put some food on the table.”

Khuele says they plant different vegetables depending on the time of the year. “We have presently planted baby marrows, patty pans, baby gems, green beans, okra and chillies. We are operating on five acres of land and it is becoming too small.

We are working on preparations to acquire an additional land of 20 acres.”

He said things were moving and there was light at the end of the tunnel. “We couldn’t realize that we were sitting on a bag of money until we took the initiative to stand up and fight for our future. Being unemployed and hungry taught us to come up with a plan to support our families.

We were seriously determined to defeat the scourge of unemployment and poverty that terrorized us on a daily basis.

Today, we are our own bosses and we are happy about our achievements.”

Khuele added that one of the challenges was a lack of machinery, but they didn’t let it hinder their progress. “We are still doing much of the work with our own hands, and we believe machinery like tractors will make our job easier. We appeal to those who can assist us with machinery to do so.”

He says their products are sent to markets locally and in Gauteng.

Playing facilities for Sundani’s youth Sundani village outside Vuwani in the Louis Trichardt area is one of the most empoverished areas in the Makhado Municipality. The village has become a preying ground for criminals, with many in the village having become victims of crime.

There is no water in the village, and villagers go for days without water as they depend on tankers from the municipality, which do not come on a daily basis. Just like many rural villages, they lack the basic services. This could soon change for the better. This follows the arrival of an emerging company in the plant hire business, Razwi Bros Plant Hire and Bukuta Transport. The company, which has been given permission to take sand from the village, has promised that, before they leave the area, residents will be empowered. To show their

commitment to empowering the local community, they donated 10 soccer balls to be given to schools and soccer teams in the community over the weekend.

They also bought poles for the U/15 grounds and nets for the playing field. The company has also absorbed several formerly jobless members of the community into their employ.

In handing out the balls and poles, Takalani Aron Muthubi of Razwi Bros Plant Hire and Bukuta Transport said he had noticed the boys who were playing soccer on a rough terrain next to their site without even poles. Together with his partner, Lufuno Edwin Razwinane, he decided to do something to motivate the boys. “First thing that struck me was that I used to see these boys playing soccer daily without any resources. They had no shoes, a worn-out soccer ball and the field was rough, but they

kept on playing,” he said. He said the first thing they promised the boys was a better soccer ball and also to level a playing field away from where they played, but they refused, saying they wanted to be next to the site of the construction. “We assessed the situation and we found out that many people in the village had nothing to do as there are no jobs. Many of them roamed the rivers searching for fish, putting their lives on the line and exposing to crocodiles. Some women resorted to gambling with cards, using grant money, which left them with no money to support their families,“ he said.

He was also worried about the escalating crime rate at the village. He felt the best way to keep the boys busy was to involve them in sport and they bought more soccer balls to cater for schools, the village soccer team and ladies soccer.

Mayor Luruli donates books and shoes to school Responding to the call of the Minister of Basic Education, Ms Angie Motshekga, to encourage pupils to read and write, Makhado Mayor Cllr Mavhungu Luruli donated school books to Vhafamadi Secondary School.

This was during the readathon campaign at Ha-Mashau village in the Makhado municipal area last Saturday. Luruli also donated school shoes and socks to 48 pupils during the event.

She said that the readathon promoted reading in its widest sense. “The campaign aims to develop a culture of reading. It also seeks to bridge the gap as well as to highlight the importance of literacy in the well-being of a modern nation.”

She said that through the project, her municipality wanted to bridge the gap between the information-rich and the information-poor by taking the Makhado Library services to the people. “Particularly the previously disadvantaged communities,” added Luruli.

“Some of the schools that we have visited and donated books and computers to through this programme improved their end-of-year results.” She said that she was aware that there were still millions of South Africans who did not have access to

library services. The readathon is an annual, nationwide project that is celebrated by all libraries in South Africa. The campaign was held under the theme Read for your Future. “We are happy that pupils will no longer travel to Louis Trichardt in order for them to access the library,” said the circuit manager for the Vhuronga 2 circuit, Mr Nnditsheni Ramugondo.

Ramugondo, the former principal of Mbilwi, expressed his appreciation to the

mayor for the donated books and shoes.

The event was made possible by the chief librarian, Ms Valencia Mudau, and the hardworking library officials. Khosi VhoThavhayamipfa Mashau urged parents who also formed part of the event to get involved in the education of their children. “I do not want to see pupils hanging around the taverns, engaging in alcohol and substance abuse, while they are supposed to be at school,” he said.

In custody for allegedly raping his own 6-year-old daughter A 40-year-old man was arrested by the Siloam police for allegedly raping his six-year-old daughter.

It is alleged that the man had been repeatedly raping his daughter for years.

The man was arrested last Thursday at Tshikombani Village in the Nzhelele area. W/O Edward Tharaga, the spokesperson for the Siloam police, confirmed the man’s arrest. “We arrested a father who had allegedly been raping his daughter for quite some time,” he said.

He added that a case of rape had been opened against the accused.

The victim, who is a Grade 2 pupil

at one of the primary schools in the area, was interrogated by teachers at school after they had noticed that the behaviour of the child had changed.

They then alerted the police.

The man is said to have been staying with the child ever since her mother died, some years ago.

During our reporter’s visit to the Siloam police station last Wednesday, the child was receiving counselling at the station’s victim empowerment unit.

The accused briefly appeared before the Thohoyandou Regional Court Last Thursday and the case was postponed.

“Who can help to restore my dignity?”

Seventeen years after the dawn of democracy in South Africa, a five-member family is still sharing a dilapidated one-room shack.

The Rathogwa family of Tshishushuru at Tshifulanani outside Thohoyandou is living in abject poverty. According to the members of the family, they cannot show anything for the hard-earned democracy.

They joined an endless list of the poor who are looking at Government to change their situation for the better, but felt that the waiting was taking too long.

This paper was alerted to the family’s plight by Mr Bardwell Mufunwaini of the Munna Ndi Nnyi Men’s Forum (Who is the Real Men), who was doing an assessment of the living conditions of the people in the area.

their three children, Rinae (19) who is in Grade 8 and twins Tsumbo, who is in Grade 7, and Thanzi, who is in Grade 6.

The room in which they stay is a time bomb that is waitng to explode.

It could collapse at any given time as the roof and planks have been eaten by termites. One can see the outside from inside the room as some of the planks have already fallen off. There is virtually no privacy.

Rathogwa said he built the first shack in the village in 2007, but in the village many people have already built houses and some who are well off have even built double-storey houses.

“I have been trying to have a structure built here for years, but could not manage from my measly grant that I get from Government. I have tried everything and asked people to assist me, but in all instances Lady Luck

was not on my side,” he said.

He said he approached the former ward councilor and photos of his structure were taken.

He also went to the municipality, where he was told to go back to his councilor.

“By visiting the municipality, I had thought that things would soon change for the better. I have respect for the government for the grant, but things seem to be taking a long time. I desperately need a house which will make us look like people again.

My children are traumatized by our situation and my dignity has been eroded. I need help urgently,” added Rathogwa.

He said he could not face the world and continue living the life he is leading presently.

Mr Bardwell Mufunwaini said he was shocked by the conditions at the shack. “This is appalling. This place is not fit for human habitation, and these people need help as a matter of urgency.

I wish government would take notice of this family’s plight and act soon,” he said.

Thulamela municipality’s spokesperson, Mr Nndwamato Tshiila, said he was aware of the family’s situation.

“We have met the family and we advised our people on the ground to put his name on the urgent list. Community members dispute committee Community members in Makhado’s Ward 23 are upset about the recent election of ward committee members.

They allege that the election process was irregular and that some parties conspired prior to the meeting to have their representatives elected. This is denied by the local councillor, who also spoke out on allegations that RDP houses had been allocated unfairly.Ward 23 comprises Madombidzha, Magau and Rathidili villages. Community members of this ward allege that before the actual meeting to elect ward committee members took place, a group of people gathered at the Makhado PR councillor’s house. According to Mr Moses

Thovhakale, there was “lobbying” before the meeting. “A group of people met at Jeaneth Matumba’s house before the meeting, which included the councillor. We were surprised to see that the last term’s committee members were simply re-elected,” said Thovhakale.

Thovhakale also accused councillor Selinah Matshiari and her committee of not recognising the youth league in that area.

“We are not invited to committee meetings and we are not allowed to participate in those meetings,” he said. He further said that about 120 RDP houses, which were supposed to have been split up between the three villages, were only erected at Magau village. “Those houses

were supposed to have been divided proportionally among the three villages. We want to know why the houses have been built in Magau only,” said Thovhakale.

Cllr Mathiari disputed the allegations, saying that the reason why the old ward committee members were still active was because they had been re-elected by the people.

“As for the alleged (irregularities during the) meeting, anyone can meet anywhere and it does not mean that we were conspiring. It is not us who allocate RDP houses, but the department in Polokwane. There were no projects to build houses in those concerned villages, except for Magau,” explained Mathiari.

Joyous Kids Crèche at Makwarela celebrated their fourth birthday last weekend. The crèche, which started with only six children in 2007, has grown by leaps and bounds and has 45 children in its care today . Situated next to Vhembe FET college, the creche is providing excellent service to students at the college, who leave the children in their care. In the photo are staff members and the happy kids. Two men in court for robbery Two Beit Bridge men appeared in court for allegedly striking a local man with an iron bar before robbing him of R800 and a pair of shoes.

Jonas Sixpence (18) and Tafadzwa Matibini (23), both of Dulibadzimu suburb in the border town, were not asked to plead to charges of robbery when they appeared before a local magistrate, Mr Carrington Karidzagundi.

The case was postponed to 26 September and they remain in custody.

The prosecutor, Miss Memory Mandityira, said on 29 July, the two accused persons, who were in the company of Arnold Muleya, who is still at large, met the victim while he was heading to his home in Dulibadzimu suburb. The trio confronted the complainant and struck him with an iron bar on the head before robbing him of R800 and the pair of shoes he was wearing. They then fled the scene, leaving the victim writhing in pain. He sustained a deep cut to the head and was taken to Beit Bridge District

“No bail for accused,” demand residents Concerned residents of Tshikota township say they are fed-up of people who break the law and continue walking around freely.

The concerned residents protested outside the Louis Trichardt Magistrate's Court last Thursday, demanding that murder accused should not be given bail.

This comes after seven people were arrested in connection with the death of a 55-year-old man,

who was allegedly assaulted before he was stabbed and left to die.

The victim, Mr Marubini George Mushapho, died in hospital after the incident. The accused, Tendani Monube, Thanyani Manngo, Ndivhuwo Netshidzivhani, Walter Mulaudzi, Sefularo Sefuka, Donald Manenzhe and a young woman, briefly appeared in the Makhado Magistrate's Court last Thurs-

day. The case was postponed to Wednesday for a formal bail application. The outcome of the court proceedings was not yet available at the time of going to press.

Washaya-Moyo said the game rangers at Chipangayi Safari Area were tipped off about poachers planning to kill rhino in the park. “I can confirm that three poachers were shot dead during a shootout with our rangers. In fact, the three men were part of a group of six suspected poachers, and they were surprised by game rangers who had advance warning of their arrival,” she said.

The alleged poachers, who were travelling in two cars, are said to have shot at the rangers after refusing to surrender, triggering a shoot-out.

The well-prepared rangers killed three men and arrested two others, while a third escaped in a Toyota Corolla. A rifle fitted with a silencer, 18 rounds of ammunition, two knives and two bags were among the items recovered and one of their vehicles was also impounded.

"Information was received by officers based at Buffalo Range Airport, working with a reliable informer, that an organised, armed poaching group wanted to enter Chipangayi Safari area for the purpose of poaching rhinos. This information was communicated to Chipangayi and they were ready when the poachers got there.”

Zimbabwean courts have handed out stiff sentences to poachers in recent months. Poachers have killed at least 14 rhino in Zimbabwe's nature reserves so far this year, principally for their horn.

Border police to investigate murder cases A 46-year-old Beit Bridge resident was axed to death by his business partner, following a dispute over the sharing of profits, police have said.

Insp Tafanana Dzirutwe, the local police spokesperson, said the incident occurred on Friday at around 22:00 at a home at Matshiloni village outside Beit Bridge.

“Our preliminary investiga-

tions indicate that the suspect had a longstanding dispute with the victim over the sharing of profits.

On the day of the incident, the two had a quarrel, resulting in the suspect’s striking the deceased with an axe. The victim sustained a deep cut on the neck and he later collapsed and died, due to his injuries,” he said.

Dzirutwe said the suspect would soon appear in court to

face a murder charge.

Meanwhile, in another murder case that occurred on Saturday, a 25-year-old man from Mayobhodo village outside Beit Bridge was fatally stabbed with a knife by another local man, following a dispute during a drinking spree.

Dzirutwe said the incident occurred at Mangwe village. He expressed concern over the rise in murder cases in the district.

Robbery gang smashed Zimbabwean police in Beit Bridge smashed a well-organised highway robbery syndicate when they arrested three suspects along the Beit Bridge-Masvingo road and recovered stolen goods worth thousands of US dollars.

The local police spokesperson, Chief Supt Lawrence Chinhengo, said the trio was arrested on Friday at around 03:00 following a tip-off.

The suspects targeted mainly foreign motorists passing through the border town. “We arrested three men after our officers acted on a tip-off on the Beit Bridge-Masvingo road and pounced on the suspects while they were in the act. The suspects were trying to steal goods from a South African haulage truck. The other four suspects managed to flee and police

have since launched a manhunt."

Police recovered six stolen cellphones, an undisclosed amount of cash and knives.

Chinhengo said the suspects were also linked to three theft cases involving US$10 000, R2 000 and groceries worth US$500.

Chinhengo said they also arrested two suspects in Dulibadzimu suburb for stealing from motor vehicles and recovered several car accessories, which included car radios, alternators and batteries. One of the suspects is a known jailbird who recently completed a prison term for a similar offence.

A year ago, rugby was a foreign sport at the school.

A visit to the school last year by Douglas Mudivhani, who plies his trade with the Blue Bulls Rugby Union, laid the foundation for pupils who are competing for places in the school's rugby team.

Netshifhefhe said as coaches they wanted to expose the learners to new challenges and give them an opportunity to take part in the sport of rugby, which is regarded as a whiteonly sport.

He said they had big plans for the sport in the area. “In a short space of time, we have achieved a lot,. Having players from our school representing the district is a big achievement, for starters. The team is meeting with resounding success, despite the many challenges. For starters, they do not have a proper rugby field to play on

and they are using a small patch of garden for their practices. They do not have proper rugby gear and some play barefoot.

He said they had the potential to take the team to greater heights, but this would only happen if they got the neccessary support. “We only have one kit, which is used by both girls and boys. We need a sponsor to realise our dream of making more and more learners participate in this sport," added Netshifhefhe.

The 17-year-old Grade 11 pupil, Ndivhuho Netshivhumbe, is very passionate about the sport. "Many people look at me with staring eyes, wondering what I am doing in a male-dominated sport. This does not deter me and I am determined to be the first woman in Vhembe to play for a national team," she said.

Chokera wins Two Countries marathon Herbet Chokera from Zimbambwe won the annual Two Countries Marathon from Zimbabwe to Musina on Saturday.

Chokera completed the 42,2 kilometre race in 02:32:16, securing himself a gold medal and R4 000. Kudakwashe Kanduna, also from Zimbambwe, was second in 02:35:46, followed by Emmanuel Matumba of Vhembe Athletics Club in 02:39.51.

The first female to cross the finishing line was well-known Jane Mudau in a time of 03:23:27.

Collen Mmola of Foskor won the 21,1km race.

Vanessa Fourie was second in 03:49:01.

Collen Mmola of Foskor Athletics Club won the half-marathon in 01:13.22. Mpho Sadiki finished in the second position in 1:17.30. Patrick Chimuchenga from Zimbabwe was third in 01:17.50.

The ladies category in the half-marathon was won by Tabitha Tsatsa from Zimbabwe in 01:19.11. Olivia Chitate ended second in 1:20.23 and Hellen Chiudo, also from Zimbabwe, finished the race third in

01:30.26.

The prize money for the marathon was R4 000 for first place, R1 000 for second and R300 for third place. In the half-marathon, the winners received 1 500, R700 for second prize and R200 for third price.

During the prize-giving ceremony, the mayor of the Musina Municipality, Cllr Carol Phiri, extended her congratulations to the participants. She added that they were working hard to ensure that next year’s race will be bigger.

Rope Skipping Club needs help to participate in championships in Cape The Makhado Rope Skipping Club that caters for young people around the Makhado Municipality needs help to be able to participate in the national championships in Cape Town early next month.

The group won the provincial competition in Polokwane last Saturday.

The club was established in 2010.

According to the leader of the group, Ms Tinyiko Makhubele,

if they can raise R30 000 to pay for transport, food and accommodation, the team will participate in the national competition of the South African Gymnastics Federation at the Belville Stadium.

“As a rural group, we do not have money to transport and pay for accommodation of those young kids, so we are making a plea to good Samaritans to assist us. We will be participating in Belville as a club and will rep-

resent our district, municipality and our province,” she said.

Makhubele said that, irrespective of the hardships they were presently encountering, practices as part of their preparations were taking place as usual.

“We do not want to discourage these dedicated and committed young ones, who are prepared to put the area on the map, by stopping our practising.”

Greenweli beat Choice XI in final of T20 league

The Greenweli side from Venda won the final of the local Second Indian Premier League on Sunday.

They beat Choice XI by 37 runs in this exciting 20-over match played at Cloud's End Hotel’s field.

Greenweli opted to bat first and got off to a good start, thanks to contributions by Ayub (10), Sabbir (45), Sajid (18), Irfan (28) and Maqsud (17 not out).

At the end of the 20th ove,r the score stood at 176 with 7 wickets down. Choice XI’s most successful bowlers were Aziz and Tosif, who each took two wickets.

Choice XI’s batting innings started off fairly well, with Tosif (15) and Aslam (52) chasing the runs. Hafeji (23) also put up some resistance, but then the wickets started falling. Iillayas took four wickets and Ayub three to wrap things up.

The last wicket fell in the 19th over, with 132 runs on the board.

Man of the Match was Greenweli’s Sabbir for his splendid 45 runs. He also took the important wicket of Tosif.

The newly appointed manager of the Vhembe District Municipality, Thomas Makumule, has assured the communities neighbouring the Nandoni Dam who are without water that their water problems will be over by 2014.

Speaking at a function to introduce him on Friday, Makumule said he was the best man for the job. He said that he had been in the technical services of the municipality before heading the planning section. “I have an answer for the water problems in the area,” said Makumule. He said water was a top priority although there were other priorities.

Communities neighbouring the dam have, on several occasions, complained about a lack of water. The Department of Water Affairs had tried to supply water, but the project was unsuccessful because the pipes were of a poor standard. Currently, litigation is going on between the Department of Water Affairs and the contractor.

Makumule said he would discuss the project with the political components of the municipality to make sure that parallel pipes were installed, so that people could get water while the litigation continued.

Makumule boasts a master's degree in development planning from the University of the Witwatersrand, which he obtained in 1999, and a master of arts degree in urban management which he obtained from the Erasmus University in the Netherlands in 2001.

The executive mayor of the municipality, Florence Dzhombere, said she was excited to have hired a man so well qualified.

All members of the Vleifontein community, from young people to the elderly, where engaged in different sporting codes at the Sampson Phophi Stadium a fortnight ago.

The coordinator of the event, Mr Abel Malulele, said they decided to stage the event to make sure that the youth were kept busy with something they could enjoy. It could also help them identify talent that could help them make a living, like athlete Mbulaheni Mualudzi and Bafana Bafana and Bloemfontein Celtic defender Mulomowandau Mathoho, who hail from Vhembe . Maluleke said they realised that many of the young people in the area were involved in crime, as well as alcohol and drug abuse, because of a lack of entertainment.

New Azayo branch for Lwamondo The Azanian Youth Organization, Azayo, will launch a branch at Lwamondo on Saturday.

According to the chairperson of the branch, Rendani Mungoni, this will be the first branch of Azayo in the Thulamela Municipality and Vhembe.

Mungoni said the launching of the branch is one of Azayo's strategies to make sure that the youth

will be mobilised in order to help increase membership of the party. "We are concerned that our support base is dwindling every year. Therefore, we want to make sure that Azapo has branches in all corners of the country. Dynamos on top after Nedzamba’s brace The unpredictable Matika FC donated league points to Tshiozwi Dynamos when they lost 2-0 in their Safa Vhembe SAB league match at the Tshikota grounds on Sunday.

Matika was strong in terms of the far back and the striking force department, but lacked cohension in the middle of the park. The balls that threatened the defence of Dynamos were ballooned from behind. Dynamos enjoyed more ball possesion, but their promising moves were turned into a nightmare by the rock-solid defence of Matika.

No goals was seen during the first half. The match was influenced mainly by the fact that Dynamos were cooling the ball down in the middle of the park, giving their opponents no chance to do as they pleased.

The centre forward of Dynamos, Vhutshilo Mafunisa, went into the referee's book, following dangerous play on Lufuno Mukhadi. Gift Ndou of Matika had an opportunity in the 64th minute, but shot into the keeper's hands.

Matika's striker, Gift Ndou, should have blown the trumpet because he beat the defence, but he hit the

upright.
