More mob killings

Several incidents of mob justice were reported in Vhembe the past week, and at least four people were killed after being pointed out as criminals by angry community members.

On Friday night, three suspected copper cable thieves (izinyoka) were hunted down by an enraged mob and burnt to death at Chavani village, near Elim. (See story on page 3) The previous day, a suspect allegedly linked to the murder of a tavern owner of Elim was killed by a mob at Mpheni village.

The incident at Mpheni followed the killing of Andries Khomola, the owner of Elim Mutonga Vari Tavern, on 9 September this year. Khomola was shot and killed at his tavern. The police later arrested three suspects, who are now facing charges of murder and robbery.

An alleged notorious and feared gang leader, Max Maphapu (52), along with Wisani Baloyi (25) and Pfarelo Mathavha (18), appeared in the Waterval Magistrate’s Court on different dates between 14 and 19 September in connection with Khomola’s death. Their cases were postponed to 22 September for a

bailOnapplication.Thursday, however, a mob formed at Mpheni village and the house and car of Maphapu, who is still in custody, were torched.

The mob that formed seemed to be after Sedzani Godfrey Munyai, another suspect in the Khomola case, who had not been arrested yet. He was out on bail on another charge of murder and was supposed to be back in court on 16 September. Munyai was caught and beaten to death by the angry mob on Thursday before the police could get to him.

Feud between couple may have led to murder

The circumstances under which the body of a 30-year-old woman was found next to the road at Thohoyan dou Unit D, a suburb near Thohoy andou Block G’s clinic, have led to the suspicion that an unresolved feud between the deceased and her longtime lover could be the reason behind her death.

The body of the woman, identified as Azwimmbavhi Mercy Tshisudi from Tshakhuma village, was found on Sun day, 17 ActingSeptember.SAPSspokesperson in the Vhembe region Sgt Vuledzani Dathi confirmed that a murder case is being investigated by the Thohoyandou police. Dathi said that the police had received a call from the Thohoyandou Emergen cy Medical Services (EMS), informing them about a dead person lying next to the road. “When we arrived at the scene, the deceased was lying on her back, with her hands folded on her stomach. There was a note with the name of [a] male person and two cellphone numbers written on it. The note was found under the deceased’s folded hands. She had

strangulation marks around her neck and it is suspected that she might have been dumped at the scene after she was killed somewhere else, as there were no struggling marks around the crime scene,” Dathi said.

A male person is being questioned by the police in connection with the murder.Tshisudi’s older sister, Ms Mpfariseni Tshisudi, said the family members were still in shock, following the gruesome discovery. She said Tshisudi had last been seen on Friday (16 September) in Tshakhuma village. According to Mpfariseni, her sister went to her longtime lover’s house in Malamulele town to get all her belongings. The two had apparently had a fight.

According to Mpfariseni, her sister used to complain about how she and the boyfriend were always quarrelling. Tshisudi had been living with the man for over seven years and was apparently about to walk out of the relationship.

“After she had left Tshakhuma on Friday, no-one saw her again. We were called by the police on Sunday and told that there was an unknown woman in the government mortuary. We were able

to identify her by the tattoo on her left hand,” said Mpfariseni.

Tshisudi will be buried at her home village of Tshakhuma on Sunday, 25 September.

Two stabbing incidents at Nngweni Secondary

In the early 2000s, Nngweni Sec ondary School in Biaba used to be known as one of the most disciplined and best-performing schools in the Nzhelele valley. This accolade, howev er, seems to be disintegrating quickly as reports of gangsterism, substance abuse, bullying and overall undisci plined behaviour seems to be the new trend at the Quantile 2 secondary school, which has more than 1600 learners.

In the most recent incident, which started on Monday (19 September), two Grade-11 learners reportedly got into an ugly fight. One of the boys sustained a nasty cut on his hand, while the other one was stabbed in the shoulder. The two learners, who are in the same class, allegedly arrived at school with a knife and an axe. They were taken to the near est clinic for treatment and the matter was later referred to the police.

The very next morning, a Grade 12 learner was allegedly also stabbed upon entering the school gate to write his preliminary exams. He too was rushed to Thehospital.chairperson of the school-governing body (SGB), Mr Joseph Mariba, said the school was still

We (SGB) have a meeting today (Wednesday, 21 September) with different stakeholders and we will take disciplinary actions.” He said that they had tried to find out why the two boys were fighting, but no-one wanted to say anything.TheMEC for the Limpopo Depart ment of Education, Ms Mavhungu Lerule-Ramakhanya, has condemned these unruly incidents at the school. “I want to make a plea to the parents, teachers and all other interested stake holders to ensure that our schools re main a place of learning. I am disturbed

by the reports of learners stabbing each other with dangerous weapons, which are not even permitted on our school premises. These incidents happened in the middle of the matric preliminary examinations, and it will surely have a negative impact on the learners at that particular school’s writing,” said Lerule-Ramakhanya.Shefurtherstatedthat she would convene a seminar to address bullying, gangsterism and in-school violence next month to seek ways to address these challenges.Policespokesperson

Enraged mobs from the Chavani and Mashamba areas near Elim burned three Zim babwean immigrants to death after they were apprehended for allegedly stealing copper cables and solar panels last Friday (16 September). The three men were allegedly caught red-handed by the an gry crowd as they were busy peeling off the plastic casings from the stolen copper cables.

The villagers said that they regularly experienced power cuts because of cable theft. According to one of the resi dents, who wished to remain anonymous, they were called in to a meeting at 23:00 the previous night (Thursday), in an attempt to search for the izinyoka (suspects).

“They were making our lives unpleasant, so we hunted for them, but couldn’t find

them,” he said. “We had a sleepless night out of fear that the izinyoka would steal our cables and solar panels. So, we woke each other up again early on Friday morning at around 04:00 to continue hunting them down, and at last caught them red-handed, while they were busy peeling cables they had stolen. They were all burnt beyond recognition,” he said.

According to the source, members of the community have been grappling with thieves stealing their cables and solar panels for some time. “The situation is not treating us well, and when thieves steal our cables and solar panels, we are forced to stay in the dark for too long. Eskom is also battling to restore electricity to house holds whose cables and solar panels get stolen. Some were told to buy their own cables, which leaves us stranded as we are also facing a major issue of

According to a community member, who did not want to have his name mentioned, the suspects were part of a group of criminals ter rorising the community. “We are fed-up with the anarchy caused by these thugs. They have been terrorising us for a long time, and each time they commit a crime, they simply get returned to the community.”Hesaidthe community had decided to take the law into their own hands because they felt the police were not doing their job, so the mob assaulted Munyai. By the time he arrived at Elim hospital, he was certified dead.

“We are no longer safe in this community and we don’t want these suspects to be given bail. If they are granted bail, they must just know that they will not be welcomed. They have to go somewhere else as we cannot guarantee their safety here,” the source said.

The spokesperson for the Khomola family, Mr Thomani Tshimbiluni, said they were hoping the arrests made in connection with Khomola’s murder would bring them closure. “We knew that something good would come out of this investigation, and within a short period of time, they came to inform the family that they have arrested the suspects. We are happy to know that we will find closure. And we received so much support from different people,” he said.

The police spokesperson, Brig Motlafela

The arrest of three suspected robbers, who were intercept ed during a snap roadblock manned by the Beitbridge Task Team and Musina SAPS members at the Baobab Tollgate on Thursday, 15 September, turned into what is considered to be one of the biggest weapon hauls in the Musina area. An arsenal of weapons that included seven pistols with 81 rounds of ammunition and two R5 rifles with 101 rounds of ammunition was found in the suspects’ possession.

The arrest was made shortly after the suspects had allegedly committed a cross-pavement robbery at the N1 Business Centre in Musina, where a

cash-in-transit security officer, who was collecting cash at businesses in the area, was shot andAccordinginjured. to Limpopo police spokesperson Col Malesela Ledwaba, the suspects gained nothing from the robbery as the money bags snatched were all empty. Ledwaba said that the robbers had pointed a gun at one of the security guards and ordered him to lie down, while the driver was shot and injured.

“The suspects took two empty money bags and fled the scene in a white Ford Ranger, which they set alight and abandoned at Blikkiesdorp. They then got into two high-performance getaway cars - a Mercedes Benz and an Audi - and sped south wards along the N1 road, after which they were arrested at the tollgate,” he said.

Along with the weapons, two high-performance motor vehicles, suspected to be stolen, were also recovered.

The suspects, aged between 45 and 54, will appear in the Musina Magistrate’s Court on charges of armed robbery, possession of illegal firearms and ammunition and posses sion of suspected stolen motor vehicles. A charge of resisting arrest has also been added.

The firearms recovered will be subjected to ballistic investigations to determine if they were previously used in the commission of other serious crimes. Police investigations to determine this have already commenced.Thearrest of these rob bers came as good news to the crime-weary residents of Musina.

Mojapelo, again appealed to residents to refrain from taking the law into their hands. He urged community members to refrain from engaging in criminal activities and encouraged them to continue working closely with the police. Beware rabies outbreak!

Residents of the Soutpans berg are faced with a serious outbreak of rabies at present and are urged to take the necessary preventative mea sures to ensure the safety of not only their pets, but their own lives.

“The situation is very bad. We have to classify it as an outbreak. In the case of rabies, we call one case an outbreak. At the moment, we are getting quite a few positives, so it is quite scary,” said Dr Ashley Heymans, who is currently do ing her compulsory commu nity service (CCS) year at the Makhado Veterinary Lab.

According to the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD), rabies is a viral infection of the ner vous system. “The disease is reported in different wild and domestic animal species, but most cases of rabies in South Africa involve domestic dogs. Human rabies cases are rare in South Africa, but cases are still confirmed annually. Humans are exposed to rabies through bites (and other wounds) inflicted by rabid animals,” states the NICD’s website.Itgoes on to explain that the virus is contained in the saliva of a rabid animal. “Most human rabies cases in South Africa are associated with domestic dog exposures. Al though a fatal infection, rabies can be controlled through vac cination of domestic dogs (and cats) and the use of rabies post-exposure prophylaxis in exposed human cases,” states the NICD. The first post-ex posure prophylaxis should be administered within 24 hours after a bite. If not, rabies is nearly 100% fatal once symp toms

Theappear.pastmonth, Heymans said on Wednesday, she had submitted between 10 and 15 cases for testing. Almost half of this number was of dogs of pet owners in Louis Trichardt. “The horrible thing is, if a dog comes to us, or any vet actu ally, and shows signs that it could be rabies, and the owner can’t prove that the dog was vaccinated, which often is the case, especially here in Louis Trichardt, we are obliged to put the animal down. This is because it is such a danger

ous disease that we are not allowed to send the animal home,” said Heymans. This is even though testing has yet to confirm rabies. “They don’t all come back positive, but unfortunately the animals have to be put down to detect the disease. If they are not vaccinated, we don’t have a choice,” said

RegardingHeymans.theabove,

Alicia Thomas of the Louis Trichardt SPCA mentioned that they had recently had a pet owner bring in her dog with rabies symptoms. The encounter turned unpleasant when the woman refused to have her dog put down and demanded to take it home. “This is so dangerous! If that dog bites a child, that child [or any person for that matter] could die,” said Heymans, adding that many people still did not realise the seriousness of the disease.Butwhy the sudden spike in rabies cases? Heymans said the occurrence of rabies was not necessarily seasonal, but it did go in a little bit of a cycle because of the wildlife affected by it. One year would have more wildlife cases than other years. “But, at the moment, it is so bad because the vaccina tions rate is so low. Unfortu nately, that [vaccination] is really the only thing you can do to prevent the spread of the disease,” said Heymans.

The low vaccination rate definitely contributes to the spread of the disease, but where does it come from?

Over the last couple of weeks, several unconfirmed reports reached the newspaper of pets, and even children, apparently being “attacked” by vervet monkeys in Louis Trichardt. Some wonder if these vervet monkeys could be the cause. Others speculate that the local

mongoose population found in town might also be culprits.

“Any animal can contract and transmit rabies. More common in this area, it is actually the jackal that is spreading it, because dogs will go for them, especially if they are sick and dogs can catch them,” Heymans said. Just on Monday, she added, she saw a jackal that she was pretty sure had rabies. This was on a farm along the Vivo road. “But something like a vervet monkey or mongoose can also very likely be responsible for transmitting the disease if they contracted the disease,” Heymans said. Regarding this, Heyman added, you cannot be 100% sure which animal(s) is spreading the disease. Your neighbour’s dog might very well be responsible. “You don’t know when you come into contact with somebody else’s dog that that dog is vaccinat ed. This is quite scary, because I do not think enough dogs in this area have been vaccinat ed,” said Heymans.

So, what should you look out for? Unfortunately, rabies exhibits a wide range of symptoms. However, said Heymans, pet owners should look for any change in normal behaviour. “Sometimes a calm dog becomes very aggressive and angry and sometimes a very boisterous dog can sud denly become uncharacteris tically calm. So, any change in behaviour is suspect already, especially if that dog has come into contact with wild animals,” said Heymans.

Heymans said that the best way to avoid the dangers of the disease was by get ting your pet vaccinated or getting yourself vaccinated. As the world celebrates World Rabies Day on 28 September this year, residents of Louis Trichardt and surrounds are urged to bring their pets for free rabies vaccinations (and deworming) to Dogs & Cats and the SPCA Louis Trichardt. “We have several thousand vaccines available, so I want to vaccinate as many dogs as pos sible. Cats as well,” said Hey mans. Pet owners can bring their pets between 09:00 and 17:00 to the area next to the Legacy Animal Clinic and are urged to bring along their pet’s vaccination certificate, if they have one.

Row at Lagos village over site that was “repossessed”

A dispute over who may occupy land in areas under control of a traditional leader flared up in Maila Lagos village. A resi dent is claiming that the local vhamusanda had sold his site to another person, who has now gone ahead and built a house in

front of his own house.

Mr Watson Phophi, who is claiming to be a resident of Lagos village, alleged that Vhamusanda Vho-Joshua Nthabalala had sold his stand to another man with out having consulted him. He complained that he had built a two-room house on the site, which he now had to share with another

man.Phophi admitted that he had received notice from Nthabalala to vacate the stand. He was surprised to see that someone else then started to build a house on his stand, and he was even prevented from accessing what he believed to be his property. Phophi said that when he enquired from the tra ditional leader what was happening, he was told that the site had been Accordingsold.to a source in the commu nity, the relationship between the local traditional leader and residents is in the bal ance. Some residents accuse Nthabalala of opposing devel opment because he feels residents do not respect him as their leader.“We went to him to ask if he knows the people that are building houses on our stand. He said he can’t say he doesn’t and cannot say he knows them, because it will stir conflict in

the community. He says people have a right to land, but there are legal procedures that need to be followed,” the resident said.

Vhamusanda Nthabalala strongly denied allegations of impropriety. He said that various procedures were entrenched in the allocation of land to people. “Our people have got a right to know who is allocated land, and they are part and parcel of the deci sion-making process,” he said.

Nthabalala said that Phophi had been given permission to occupy the stand in 2016. He had then relocated to Nzhelele, after his mother had passed on. “We sum moned him to the royal kraal, but he didn’t turn up,” said Nthabalala.

Nthabalala explained that when Phophi had bought the stand, the price had been set at R4 500, but he had only paid a R1 500 deposit. He had not made further payments and Phophi had not received the necessary Permission to Occupy (PTO) certificate, said Nthabalala.

“I have the right to sell the stand to the people who want the stand,” said Nthabalala. He said that only after Phophi had seen that the new owner had started with the foun dation of his house that he had put a roof on his two-room house.

The newly installed traditional leader of Thengwe-Matshetshete village, Vhamusanda Godfrey Tshisikhawe Makhado, said he would continue to fight hard to win the battle for clean and consistent drinking water, which remained a serious problem in his village.

“I will not rest until my communities get clean water from their taps. I want to engage with the Vhembe District Municipality (VDM) on how rural communities could get clean water. I also want to call an imbizo at the village to talk about crime and how we can make our communities safer,” said MakhadoMakhado.wasinstalled as the village’s new traditional leader on Saturday (17th). The rural village of Thengwe-Matshetshete, in the Thengwe Tribal Council in Mutale, had been without a traditional leader for almost nine years, following the death of Vhamusanda Thivhileli Makhado in 2013. The village was ruled by the acting traditional leader until now.

During the ceremony, Thovhele Vudzidzhena Nethengwe urged Vhamusanda Makhado to treat his people with respect, steer the village in the right direction and develop his communities for the better. “You have taken an oath that you will work with all your abilities to develop the Mangaya village. Makhadzi Mphaphuli now Archbishop of Holiness in Christ Apostolic Church

The rural village of Mbil wi-Tshikweta, just outside Thohoyandou, was buzzing with excitement on Saturday, 17 September, when one of the royal women of the Ha-Mp haphuli clan, Makhadzi Thizwilondi Mphaphuli, was ordained as the Archbishop of the Holiness in Christ Apos tolic Church.

Ululations and worship songs were the order of the day and Bishop Phalanndwa Rabada of the Apostolic Holy Messenger Church in Zion urged the new

Archbishop to work for all people, regardless of whether they are members of her con gregation.“Sheshould put the people first, as many will come to her church with the need for prayers and spiritual healing. It is her responsibility to unite the people in church as she will be leading bishops, pastors, evangelists and congregations at large,” said Bishop Rabada.

“We further urge her to dream big, even though she will be leading one of the ru ral-based churches, which will hopefully go from strength to strength. We want Archbishop

Mphaphuli to always pray for the people’s needs and prob lems, because prayers are the key to miracles and conquers all demons.”Bishop Rabada said that being an Archbishop entailed handling and running the office administration of the church. She added that her given re sponsibility was to work hard in leading the church in the right direction.

Thovhele Gole Mphaphuli, one of the senior Vhavenda tra ditional leaders, promised that the royal Mphaphuli clan would support her.

Legal Aid lawyers refuse to appear for man accused of killing attorney

Two of the Legal Aid attor neys appointed to represent Tshianeo Munyai (30), who stands accused of shooting and killing well-known Tho hoyandou lawyer Mmbam badzeni James Manwadu (46) in January this year, withdrew from the case last Friday, on the grounds that Manwadu had been a col league of theirs.

Manwadu, of Maniini Block K near Thohoyandou, was gunned down in front of the gate at his home near the Thavhani Mall.

“It is not that we don’t want to represent you in court as Legal Aid South Africa. We are conflicted to represent you. The victim, whom you are accused [of killing] was our colleague and we can’t help you,” said Mr Thomas Madzaga, head of Legal Aid South Africa’s Tho hoyandou office.

Wanga Monyai of Wanga Monyai Attorneys and Cynthia Nemadzhilili were appointed to represent the accused but withdrew their services out of respect for Manwadu, who worked with them in the same office. “We have submitted Munyai’s murder case to the outside Judicare and we will wait for the court to appoint an outside lawyer in this regard,” saidLimpopoMadzaga.police spokes person Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo said the Vhembe Trio Crime Task Team had received

Vhembe’s “fallen” journalists get recognition during special function

Veteran journalist Mathatha Tsedu cautioned the public against forgetting the past because, he said, by forget ting the past, we run the risk of repeating its mistakes and horrors.

Tsedu was addressing invited guests, members of the media, traditional leaders and businesspeople during a remembrance ceremony that was held in honour of journal ists who had died over the past 17 years. The ceremony was held at the Babylon Resort in Thohoyandou last Saturday (17 September). The lives and work of five local journalist, namely Elijar Mushiana (1973 – 2014), Wikus Lee (1955 –2020), Richard Mmbi (1973 – 2016), Robert Nevhulaudzi (1965 – 2010) and Alpheus Siebane (1953 – 2005) were highlighted and a special plaque, engraved with their names, was unveiled.

During his speech, Tsedu said: “Although it is important

for us to move forward, today we choose to remember and honour the lives and contribu tions of these five journalists from our region with whom we have worked with in various publications and other platforms. We are here to pay tribute to these gallant soldiers of this industry who served their fromhouses,ists,”ourpermeatedethicalWethemselvesofnotofityfieldThosetion;ismcropfoundationjournalistsHecommunities.”saidthedepartedhadlaidastrongforthecurrentofjournalists.“Journalisaboutverifiedinformaitisnotaboutgossip.ofyoustillactiveinthehaveamajorresponsibiltoensurethatthelegaciesthosewehonourtodaydogetdefiledbytheactionsgossipmongerspresentingasjournalists.haveadutytoupholdtheanddoggedsearchthatthegoodworkoffellowdeceasedjournalsaidTsedu.RepresentinglocalmediaMrAntonVanZylZoutnetPublishers,from

where most of the deceased journalists launched their ca reers, thanked the organisers for putting up such a historic event. “The journalists we are remembering here today sac rificed everything for the sake of their careers at a time when things were very difficult in the journalism industry,” he said.

Van Zyl brought along some iconic historic camer as to illustrate how difficult operating yesteryear used to be, which still did not prevent the photographers and jour nalists from producing some exceptional work. He showed the guests the type of cameras used by people such as Sam Nzima (who took the famous Hector Pietersen photo in 1976) and Peter Magubane. “The fact that you have a mod ern camera does not make you a good photographer, just as the fact that you can post your work online does not make you a good reporter,” he said. Van Zyl said just as they should respect the old cameras that taught them the basics of pho tography, they should respect the journalists who had laid the foundation for so many journalists who followed.

Traditional leader Vhamu sanda Vho-Mudzulathungo Mmbi, who spoke on behalf of the families of the remem bered journalists, said they appreciated the great initiative of remembering their loved ones. “We initially thought our dear family members had been forgotten, but today we are assured that their legacy lives on. This clearly demonstrates what a tremendous impact they had on so many people’s lives while they were still here on earth.”

Thulamela Arts Council wants more artists to join hands for growth

Arts & Entertainment

The Thulamela Arts Council has one ultimate goal and that is to see all creative people join hands in promoting local art around the Thulame la Municipality. This was revealed by the chairperson of the council, Mr Quincy Maladze, during a strate gic-planning meeting held at the Florence Masakona Arts Centre in Thohoyandou on Friday, 16 September. In attendance were arts practitioners from various areas around the Thulamela Municipality.

Maladze said they were con cerned about art practitioners who did not participate in the council’s activities. “Our aim is to stimulate public interest in

the arts, but it becomes a chal lenge when we have artists who prefer to operate solo. If we are many and united, we are able to achieve more and empower more local artists by giving them support and information to grow their careers. We are appealing to all artists and the various community stakehold ers around Thulamela to help us sensitise the community about the importance of the arts industry and how it helps to unite us as a nation.”

He said many benefits existed for artists who participated in the activities of the council. “We can also share knowledge with artists on how they can access mentorship, studies and fund ing to advance their careers. We also organise big events where these young artists can show

case their work, while at the same time attracting sponsors who can come to their financial rescue,” said Maladze.

Mr Ndivhuwo Luvhengo, the council’s public relations officer (PRO), is a multiple award-winning jazz maestro, famously known as Ndivhu wo NL. Luvhengo stressed that art is fundamental to our humanity. “Art inspires us as a community because it fosters creativity and unity. We are inspired by art to take pride in our creativity, while laying a strong foundation on which our future art practitioners will operate. Our aim is to bring communities together, hence we humbly implore all artists in the Thulamela Municipality to join us on this vital course,” he said.

Mr Love Masia, the treasurer of the Limpopo Older Persons Forum, has warned residents who are at retirement age not to indulge in excessive gambling as this pastime can deprive them of their pension funds or grants.

Masia addressed more than 100 elderly residents from the local region during the Older Person’s Parliament, hosted by the Vhembe District Munici pality (VDM) at the Thulamela municipal council chamber in Thohoyandou on Tuesday, 13 September.“Wehave found that many of our elderly people gamble excessively and end up being poorer. This is not good for someone in retirement. They must also refrain from borrow ing money from matshonisa (loan sharks) because they will end up penniless by the time these matshonisa, who hold on to their personal bank cards, start taking their grant monies. They should rather visit their nearest post office or bank, which are more reliable sources to help when they are in need of money,” said Masia.

According to him, the pro vincial forum in Limpopo also found that many old people are being abused financially

by children and grandchildren who feed off their pension funds or grants, leaving them financially vulnerable. He further advised them to take up exercising regularly as this con tributes to a healthy lifestyle.

Acting executive mayor of the VDM, Takalani Mundal amo, said that the old people were the corner stones of their families, villages and commu nities at large. “We grew up seeing them working hard in uplifting themselves and their families. We are who we are today because our elders took care of us from our childhood, and we must appreciate them. We particularly give our salute

to our women. We as govern ment must create a way of taking care of our old people, such as creating old-age centres and entertainment centres where they can learn new skills or practice their hobbies, for example sewing or woodcraft, ceramics or beadwork,” said Mundalamo.Mundalamo made an appeal to community leaders, such as the South African Civic Organi sation (SANCO) and traditional councils to help them access health-care services to ensure that old people do not have to wait in long queues when visiting clinics to get their medication.

Azwidohwi “Dzhiawolala” Rangwana, known for being one of the most experienced (and shortest) actors from the Vhembe region, said he wanted to see himself rubbing shoulders with Hollywood stars in future.

The diminutive actor from Thohoyandou, who has starred in a number of local movie productions, including Vha do fa vhe nngwa, Tshelede ya Ha-Lambani, and Mufu o vhonala, says his height does not bother him in the least when he is acting. “When I was young, I used to beat up boys taller

than myself. Even now, if people misbehave because of my height, I will discipline them with my bare hands. When I started acting, I never stopped believing that I am the best and never, ever allowed my height to hinder my progress. After all, dynamite comes in small packages,” he said.

The 49-year-old father of four’s only concern around his height is when other children mock his kids at school, saying that their father is a “small boy”. He added that his daughter, who is shorter than himself, came home crying a week ago, complaining that the other children were laughing at her, say-

Burning Fire set their sights on SATMA

Burning Fire, a well-known reggae and gospel group, have set their sights on this year’s South African Traditional Music Achievement Awards (SATMA) function, hoping to win an award as Best Reggae Group/Artist.

More than 100 musicians from across the country, including Burning Fire from our own shores here in Vhembe, were nominated three months ago and are now anticipating the moment of truth, which will be revealed on 1 October at the Mbombela Stadium in Mpumalanga.Khuthadzo Mavhusha and Rudzani Mbengeni from Tshifudi village and Ronald Mahumele from Tshaulu village formed Burning Fire three years ago. This collaboration between the three artists seemed to be the perfect one, producing a reggae sound infused with gospel vibes and melodies.

Khuthadzo, known as Ambasada, is the group’s senior member who has consistently demonstrated his musical brilliance since the start of his own musical journey, when he began recording some of his com-

positions in 2017.

Rudzani, aka Mufeelister, had musical aspirations to become a hip-hop artist back in 2008. In 2012, however, he was greatly inspired by Khuthadzo, who was (and still is today) a highly talented performance artist, singer and songwriter. Since then, Rudzani has developed a noticeable enthusiasm for reggae music.

Ronald, known as DJ Light, grew up with a musical mind from an early age, when he would play rhythms with empty tins and sticks. He takes on the role of DJ and sound engineer. All three band members are on vocals and contribute to writing and performing their songs.Their most recent eight-track EP, titled Road to Zion, was released four months ago and was well received by their fans with songs such as Mesia. The EP features fellow artists Sims Mal, Mr Lover, Vha Dogi and many others.

The group members say they are very excited to be nominated in the Best Reggae Group/Artist category. “We are putting our faith in God and look forward to winning this award.”

People often resort to taking the law into their own hands when faced with crime. Over the past few months, several local children have gone missing, which led to four suspects’ being burnt to death by residents from the Nzhelele area. Phalaphala FM decided to do a special broadcast through their talk show, Tshiko , hosted by Mpho “Mr MG” Rathando, from 12:00 to 14:30, which was aimed at informing the people of these areas on what to do when faced with criminals.

Sgt Vuledzani Dathi confirmed that crime has increased in the area. However, he warned people that the crime statistics that circulate on social media are not always a true reflection of the statistics in the SAPS database, adding that the SAPS are doing their part in controlling theThesituation.SAPS’s communications officer, Sgt Irene Radzilani, condemned the recent incidents where people resorted to mob justice, saying that the police would bring all perpetrators to book. “It is alleged that community members hunted [the suspects] down and apprehended them before stoning them to death. Let us not practice vigilantism. Let us rather work with the police to bring suspects to book, so that they can face the law,” she said.

When community members and listeners of the station were asked how they contributed to crime prevention in the area, Mr Samuel Lusunzi said that they had called on Police Minister Beki Cele and asked for more police officers to be deployed in the Vhembe area as they felt too few police officers were available to deal with the ever-rising crime rate.

Nyaope is not a jol, warns former addict

From a distance, he looks like a walking skeleton, heading slowly towards their special smoking zone on the banks of the Mvudi River, just half a kilometre from the Thohoyandou CBD. When he arrives, his friends are already sharing the deadly nyaope drug through ‘Bluetooth’, cringing each time the needle penetrates the skin. But upon arrival, the skel eton-looking young man merely starts laughing and asks his

friends if the stuff is really strong. This is the daily routine of the Thohoyandou Nyaope Boys - wast ing their lives away for a never-end ing ride on the nyaope dragon’s back.Benedict* agreed to an exclusive interview with the Limpopo Mirror but immediately asked for money. Very politely this request was re fused. Though he claims to be clean after spending some time in rehab, it was very clear from the onset what the money would be used for. Benedict, who was born and

bred in the Vhembe region, started smoking nyaope in Hillbrow, Johannesburg, a few years ago. He said the first signs for parents to look for to know if their chil dren are using nyaope are a loss of appetite for food, and cash and household items (utensils, clothes, etcetera)

“Addictsdisappearing.willsellanything to get money to buy nyaope. This drug makes it difficult to eat pap and meat. You survive on biscuits, Sweet Aid and other liquid stuff,” Benedict said.

“Another sign that gives them away is when they start to go out without bathing, and eventually stop bathing altogether, because when you have taken nyaope, your body itches whenever it comes into contact with water. Nyaope addicts even pray for it not to rain, because when it rains, they experience terrible discomfort. You will scratch your body for the whole day and it becomes very painful.

“Nyaope also makes you so weak that you cannot even partici pate in sexual activity. In fact, you end up

dead as far as sex is concerned. I have been clean for at least 14 months now, but my sex drive is stillHegone.”says the longer someone uses the drug, the more it kills the taste buds and other senses. “After a while, you don’t even feel anything after you have smoked nyaope. That is when you have to use an injection to feel high. You start by injecting yourself in the hands. After a while, when they become numb and your veins no longer respond either, you move on to the legs. When they get used to nyaope too, you have one last resort, and that is to inject yourself in the private parts which, of course, is very painful,” he said.

When asked about the ‘Bluetooth’ method used, he explained: “It is just like transferring files or music from one computer or cellphone to another.” This happens when one addict injects nyaope into his veins and then draws his own blood back up the needle and injects it into a friend. This is considered a cheap way to share a high.

When asked if they do not worry about the high risk of transmit ting diseases from one person to another, Benedict replied: “Nyaope is no jol. It is a very dangerous drug. I have seen people lose their jobs, property and even lives because of this drug. My advice to anyone would be to not even start.”

On Tuesday (20th), officials of the South African National Roads Agency Limited (SANRAL) went on a tour to the Musina Ring Road and provided more detail about the R700 million project. The project, which is expected to ease traffic congestion, was completed last month.

Although the Minister of Trans port, Mr Fikile Mbalula, did the honours of opening the ring road about two weeks ago, SANRAL felt it should also point out the finer de tails and clarify some issues around theAccordingproject. to Mr Hennie Kotze, SANRAL’s project engineer, the life span of this road stretches to about 40 years, although the black surface we see is expected to last for about 10 to 12 years thereof.

“In seven years’ time from now, we will monitor the surfacing and put on a new surface, but this all depends on the volume of traffic on the road. However, if more than the expected number of heavy vehicles use this road, the life span could be reduced by 10 years,” said Kotze.

To keep the road in good shape, SANRAL has a routine road-main tenance contractor who will be maintaining the road.

The building of the ring road had some social impacts on Musina

residents. Some residents were relocated to houses constructed by SANRAL and some protected tree species, such as the baobab, were transplanted and replanted. “We relocated 32 households to houses we had constructed. For a year we have monitored complaints on the houses. We also compensated for any loss the relocated residents incurred. If anything goes wrong on these SANRAL houses from here on, it is the responsibility of the owners of the houses to sort out,” Kotze

“Partsaid.ofthe road cuts through the old Musina copper mine and the old Musina landfill site. SANRAL had to cut 18 metres deep through the old copper mine site to make a way for the road. To prevent rocks and sand from being washed away, hessian fabric had been used to cov er the side of the road.” In the long run, Kotze said, they will sow seed grass to grow, which will eventually cover the whole area.

The landfill was also moved a few metres back to make way for the newOnroad.thewalk-about excursion, Joseph Chuene was among the local residents who were seen working on the project. “I am a civil engi neering graduate and am gaining valuable practical experience through this project,” Chuene said. He had been involved on the project since last year.

Maperese through to Gwasda final

Maperese FC proceeded to the final of the Gwasda tournament, following their 3-1 victory over Ramantsha Blackpool. The semi-final match was played at the Tshi ozwi Grounds on Sunday. Blackpool lost cohesion in the midfield in the open ing minutes. This was a real blessing to Maperese. They capitalised on the setback and scored two beautiful goals. Maemu Musiamo was on target in the 14th minute. Shortly af ter this goal, Thabelo Mulaudzi

dribbled past two of Blackpool’s defenders and faced the keeper. Instead of beating the keeper, Mulaudzi chose to share his fortune with Thomas Mashau, who was in the perfect scoring position.Doctor Ratshibaya forced his way through the defence of Blackpool and unleashed a ground cutter from close range to score his team’s third goal. This goal was a wake-up call to Blackpool, though it came a little late. They reduced the margin nine minutes towards half time. Their bulldozer strik er, Rowen Thovhakale, beat the

keeper, following his lone effort within the Killers’ danger area.

Blackpool’s hopes of winning were further shattered when they were reduced to 10 men in the 74th minute. Ernest Munyadziwa was given his marching orders for a dis pute with the referee over his decision not to allow Blackpool a goal.Maperese started to play defensive football in the second half, protecting their lead. Pfano Sithuga of Maperese was yellow-carded for a rough tackle on Lucky Buasi late in the match.

SMSA FC are the NW Mutengwe Soccer Tournament champions

SMSA are still in celebratory mood after being crowned the champions of the NW Mutengwe Soccer Tour nament at the Manamani Grounds last Sunday. They beat Vyeboom Marika FC 2-1 in the final to lift the trophy.

SMSA were presented with cash to the tune of R15 000, a soccer kit, gold medals, a floating trophy and two soccer balls for the victory. The cere mony was held at the grounds shortly after the final game.

SMSA’s journey to the final

was rocky and thorny. They beat Ravies FC 15-14 in their quarterfinal match that was played at the same venue a day before. The winner was determined through a penalty shootout after a 1-1 draw at the end of regulation time.

Their semi-final match was against Rockers FC, whom they beat 5-4. Here the winner was also determined through a penalty shootout after the teams had played to a 1-1 draw during regulation time.

Vyeboom Marikana had beaten Muziafera Blue Eagles 5-4 to secure a place in the

final. Vyeboom Marika were given R5 000, a soccer kit, silver medals and a soccer ball during the ceremony.

During the ceremony, one of the organisers, Mr Thilivhali Mutengwe, said that they were impressed by the conduct of both the players and the offi cials from the clubs through out the tournament. He stated that they were planning to stage another tournament during the festive holidays, which will be even bigger in terms of the participating teams and the sponsorship amount.

Leopards donate points to Baroka

Black Leopards have good reason to press the panic but ton. The team has managed to collect only three points from the four Motsepe Founda tion Championship League matches they have played to date.

They had mixed fortunes in their last two matches. Lidoda duvha could register their only victory when they beat MM Platinum FC 1-0 at the Malam ulele Stadium last Wednesday (14th). The Thohoyandou side suffered a 0-1 defeat at the hands of Baroka FC at the same venue on DuringSunday.apost-match in terview with the team’s head coach, Mr Joel Masutha, he indicated that his players had

given their all and that they were unlucky at the goal finish. He said that they could have sealed the game in the first half, had it not been for the fact that it was not their day.

Asked about their next fixture against Casric Stars, with whom they will lock horns at the Solomon Mahlangu Stadium in Kwamhlanga next Saturday (1 October), Ma sutha said that he knew very little about the Stars. When requested to comment about the regular players who had not been seen in the team this season, “The Prophet”, as he is widely known, said that the players were still nursing their injuries. Some of the players who are still to kick the ball in an offi cial game this season include

the league’s top goal scorer in the 2021/22 soccer season, Tiklas Thutlwa, and the team’s number one keeper, Rotshidz waComingMuleka.back to their game against Baroka FC, both sides managed to display enter taining football during the first 45 minutes. The visitors from Polokwane were superi or in terms of ball possession throughout the last half. At that stage, the home side was lookingBarokahopeless.took88 minutes to score the goal that earned them three significant league points. Sekhela Sithole was brought down within the box and the referee awarded a penalty to Baroka. Thabang Mokoena made no mistake from the white spot.

Maindis up against the UJ students

With most of the teams left with 10 matches to play before the end of the season, the fight for the league title and to escape the relegation axe will continue among the teams campaigning under the banner of the Holly woodbets Super League this weekend.

The only professional ladies’ football club in Vhembe Dis trict, Maindis Ladies FC, are preparing for a tough battle. They will visit the University of Johannesburg FC at the UJ Campus Stadium in Johannes burg on Saturday.

This will be the second away fixture for Maindis in a row. Maindis had played against

Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies at the Loftus Stadium in Pretoria on Wednesday afternoon. In stead of coming back home af ter the game, Maindis decided to wait for their game against UJ while in Gauteng. The result of their midweek game against Mamelodi Sundowns was not yet available at the time of our going to print.

Maindis’ last home match was against Vasco da Gama FC, with whom they had played to a 2-2 draw at the Giyani Stadium last Saturday. Shamiso Motasa and Vutivi Sithole scored the two goals in their game against Vasco da Gama.Asked about their level of readiness for Saturday’s match, the head coach of Maindis, Mr

Sipho Mabuza, said that his players were fit for the game, both mentally and physically. He said that their target was to get at least four points in the two away matches.

The other Limpopo-based side, First Touch Ladies, will play against City Lads at the Butterworth Stadium in the Eastern Cape. University of the Western Cape (UWC) will host JVW FC at the UWC Campus Stadium in Cape Town.

The other weekend fixtures are Bloemfontein Celtic vs Thunderbirds Ladies, Coal City Wizards vs Durban La dies, Vasco da Gama vs Golden Ladies, TUT Ladies vs Ma melodi Sundowns Ladies and Tsunami Queens vs Richmond United.

Raider disappointed over postponement of bout

Local female boxer Raider Muleba is deeply disappoint ed with HSP Boxing Promo tions’ decision to postpone the Boxing Thriller Tourna ment, which was scheduled to take place in Tzaneen on Friday, 30 September.

Muleba was scheduled to fight Kholosa Ndobayane from the Eastern Cape for the vacant lightweight championship title. She said she received the bad news of the cancelled tournament after her Friday work out with her coach,

John Nemakonde.

“I put in three months of hard work for this title. I am so disappointed. I will have to take a break for a week, and then go back to training. Getting a shot at a title fight in your own province is not easy. I hope it will still take place in Limpopo, once they decide to go forward with it,” she Nemakondesaid.was equally upset about the postponement. “We worked very hard for this

fight and Muleba is in her best shape ever at the moment. The opponent was not going to last for more than four rounds in the ring; we were going to knock her out,” he said.

Meanwhile, the managing director of HSP Boxing Promo tions, Mr James Mathonsi, said the tournament was postponed for reasons beyond their con trol but that he should have the new date available later this week or early next week.

Matangari scrape through to final

Last weekend was a joyful one for Matangari High Aims Football Club. They beat Anel Real Vikings 4-2 in their quarter-final match of the Nwali Soccer Chal lenge Tournament that was played at the Khubvi Benjie’s Grounds on Saturday. The unexpected happened the following day at the same venue when they rose to the occasion and beat Madridtas FC 1-0 in their semi-final match to secure a place in the final.

Their Saturday game against Real Vikings was a thriller. As if they were going to teach High Aims a soccer lesson, Real Vikings were unstoppable in the first 20

minutes of the game. They created numerous scoring chances, but their strikers let them down by fumbling with the ball at the goal finish.

Their left winger, Pfano Ramphabana, was the first player to cause an upset. He dribbled past two defenders in a row but lost possession just before he could unleash from the edge of the box. High Aims, on the other hand, gained momentum with time. They launched several attacks towards the end of the first half, but their goal poachers seemed to have forgotten their scoring boots at home.

An argument ensued be tween the referee, Mr Sandani Nelufule, and the players of Real Vikings. The players’ gripe was that the referee,

according to them, had been biased from the start of the game. The situation came back to normal after two of them were reprimanded with yellowVikings’cards.keeper, Phathut shedzo Mbulaheni, was taken to hospital for medical treat ment after colliding head-on with a striker of High Aims. He was replaced with Thabelo Nemutamvuni.Nogoalwasseen during regulation time and the win ner was determined through a penalty shootout. High Aims managed to convert four of their chances through Ren dani Ntsieni, Loshani Nedam bale, Muvhofhololi Ngwana and Idani Ndou, while Real Vikings scored via Tshifhiwa Baloyi and Jerry Langwane.

Mpheni Home Defenders through to the next round of Nedbank Cup

Mpheni Home Defenders proceeded to the next round of the preliminary Nedbank Cup Knock-out Tournament after beating Musina United 6-5. The match was decided by a penalty shootout, after the two teams had played to a goalless draw on Saturday at the Louis Trichardt Show Grounds.

Defenders were the superiors regarding ball possession, but their strikers seemed to be shy

when they approached their opponents’ danger area. De fenders’ killer striker, Thabelo Tshikweta, was the first player to go into the referee’s book. He ignored the referee’s whistle and kicked the ball away.

Musina’s leading goal scorer, Thendo Masindi, could not live up to the fans’ expecta tions as Tshepo Benside had marked him tightly. Defenders threatened to score in the 16th minute when Sindiswe Bongani received a neat pass from Bong inkosi Makanga but fumbled at

the goal finish.

Koos Matlala, Defenders’ midfielder, was a marvel to watch. He was everywhere, dis tributing promising balls from the middle of the park, while also playing as a full striker.

The referee flashed another yellow card in the 57th minute. Abel Bokaba of Musina tackled Gift Nemutandani from behind and the referee punished him for the Musinainfringement.soonrealised that

Lady Luck had abandoned them, when Goodman Chirula fumbled at the goal finish. He received a neat pass from Tuymelo Molewa within the box and shot wide with the stranded keeper, Ludwick Mkhatshwa, already beaten. Chirula committed another blunder a little later. This time around, he failed to connect Doglous Mthimkhulu’s square

Defenderspass. played entertaining football from the onset, but their strikers were unlucky.

Lucky Buasi, Defender’s right flank, missed an opportunity in the 80th minute. After beating two defenders in a row, he shot aimlessly from inside the box. The ball went far wide, much to the disappointment of the team’s fans.

Berea FC and Matangari High Aims in Nwali Soccer Challenge thriller

The final of the Nwali Soccer Challenge Tournament will be staged at the Khubvi Benjie’s Grounds on Saturday. Berea FC and Matangari High Aims will meet in the final.

Berea’s way to the final went via Khubvi Dangerous Darkies, whom they beat 4-3 in their quarterfinal match at the same venue last Saturday. The win ner was determined through a penalty shootout as the score was 1-1 at the end of regulation time. Berea went on to crush Mulodi Freedom Birds 1-0 in their semi-final match at the same venue the following day.

Matangari High Aims beat Anel Real Vikings 4-2 in their quarter-final match last Satur day. They then rose to the oc casion and beat Madridtas FC 1-0 in their semi-final match to secure a place in the final.

The teams that were booted out in the semi-final stage, Madridtas FC and Mulodi Freedom Birds, will fight for the third and fourth position in their losers’ final match, which is scheduled to start at 13:00.

Stopping the goal poachers of Berea, Edwin Ramphabana and Dakalo Ratshitanga, will not be an easy task for High Aims’ defenders.

On the other hand, Berea

must keep an eagle eye on the playmakers of High Aims, Israel Netshiendeulu and Ren dani Ntsieni, or else they will concede an avalanche of goals. High Aims have one of the best goalkeepers in the tournament, Fhatuwani Mudimeli. Mudime li pulled off some brilliant saves in their game against Anel Real Vikings last Saturday.

The champions will take home R10 000. The team that will finish in second position will be presented with cash amounting to R7 000. The third-and fourth-placed teams will receive R3 900 and R3 000 respectively.

TTM show no mercy to struggling VFA

Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila (TTM) proved to Venda Football Academy (VFA) beyond any doubt that they are their elder brothers when they crushed them 2-0 in their Motsepe Foundation Championship League match that was played at the Thohoyandou Stadium on Saturday.

Vhadau Vha Damani are shining on top of the log with nine points, follow ing the victory.

The head coach for TTM, Mr John Ferreira, is optimistic that the team will maintain their leadership until the end of the season. He said he knew that winning the league title was a marathon, adding that his team would

have enough strength to absorb the pressure to the bitter end. He said that his mandate was to promote the team to the DStv Premiership division, come the end of the season.

Ferreira said that their set target was achievable when considering the quality of the players they had in their camp. Asked to comment about their game against VFA, the former VFA mentor was quick to mention that “it was a difficult one”.

TTM did not give VFA any chance to play their traditional carpet foot ball. They used their height advantage and physical fitness to frustrate the dwarfish VFA players.

TTM were the first to effect changes to their starting line-up. They re

placed Fani Asithandile with Tebogo Motloung towards the end of the first half. They effected another change by introducing Brian Dolamo, who re placed Cheslyn Jampies four minutes into the last stanza.

Their opening goal came via Moeketsi Sekola, who gave the ball the final touch after a square pass from Tebogo Motloung. VFA realised that Saturday was not their day when they missed a fortune eight minutes thereafter. They were awarded a pen alty kick after Kgotatso Mariba was brought down within the box. Onke Moletshe caused an upset by shooting wide from the penalty spot.

Thabiso Nkoana scored the second goal for TTM later in the game.

Home Defenders and City Motors in Nedbank clash

The Nedbank Cup semi-finals and the final matches for the teams af filiated to the Limpopo Stream of the ABC Motsepe League will be staged at the Polokwane Noorde likes Stadium on Saturday. Teams that have managed to secure places in the semi-final round are Mpheni Home Defenders, Ngwabe City Motors, Emmanuel FC and Phinnet City FC.

The opening match, which is scheduled to start at 09:00, will be between Mpheni Home Defenders and Ngwabe City Motors. Home Defenders’ way to the semi-final stage went via Musina United, whom they had crushed 6-5 in their opening group stage match that was played at the Makhado Show Grounds last Saturday.

Defenders narrowly beat Munaca FC 1-0 in the group final at the same venue to secure a place in the provincial semi-final stage. Gift Nemutandani is expected to be keep the fire burning in Home

Defenders’ midfield.

City Motors managed to beat Tubatse FC 4-0 in their opening group-stage match, which was played at the Mapodile Stadium in the Sekhukhune area. Their group-final match was against Dit lou FC, whom they then booted out with a 2-0 tally at the same venue later that Phinnetafternoon.Citywillrub shoulders with Emmanuel FC in the second semi-final match, which is sched uled to start at 11:00. Emmanuel FC had played against Giyani Happy Boys in their group-stage match at the Giyani Stadium. They later crushed Winners Park FC 1-0 to book a place in the provincial semi-final stage.

The winners in the semi-final matches will meet in the final later in the afternoon. The champions will play against the SAB League provincial champions to determine the team that will represent the province in the national last-32 round. Mikhado FC were the pro vincial champions last year.

The relationship between Venda Football Academy Football Club (VFA) and the team’s head coach, Mr Michael Loftman, is some thing of the past. According to the chairman of the club, Mr Itani Munzhelele, the former Orlando Pirates assistant coach resigned on Monday afternoon.

Loftman’s resignation follows a string of poor results under his guidance the past few weeks. VFA could only manage to win one of

the four league matches they had played to date. They lost 0-1 to Magesi FC at Polokwane’s Old Peter Mokaba Stadium in their opening match. They beat Platinum City Rovers 1-0 at the Thohoyandou Stadium before losing 0-1 and 0-2 to Polokwane City and Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila respectively. Mr Munzhelele said that they would soon make an announcement regarding the new head coach for the team. “We wish Mr Loftman all the best in his future endeavours,” said Mr Munzhelele.
