(66). He died at his home at Ha-Mashau Bodwe on 10 December and was buried at Bodwe on Sunday.

During his heydays, he became involved in the development of young soccer referees.

Ratshisevhe worked at the Vuwani Football Association until the soccer associations merged, following the municipal demarcation. He was also a referee in the SAFA Vodacom league, now known as the ABC Motsepe league. In this capacity, he also served as referee selector for the SAFA Vhembe MMK Administrators league.

Ratshisevhe was a former principal at the Khwara Secondary school, before he retired in 2020.

His daughter, Ms Khuthadzo Ratshisevhe, said the family

members were saddened by his death, but were proud to have produced “one of the most valuable members of the community”. She said that Ratshisevhe had played a big role in uplifting the standard of soccer and education in the local community.

The president of SAFA Vhembe, Mr George Kubayi, said the football family had lost one of its pillars, someone who had always been working hard towards the development of the sport. “We used to visit him even during his last days and he could not stop talking about soccer. He was always there when we needed him. Now that he is gone, we are afraid that no one will ever fill his shoes because he is irreplaceable,” he said.

Ntshavheni Nenguda, said that cases of cable theft had of late become a problem around Vhembe. This is a development that continues to affect electricity supply in most parts of Vhembe. Nenguda appealed to members of the community to report any damage or vandalisation of electricity cables to the police. Nenguda could not say when the cables would be replaced and electricity restored to the affected areas.

The police spokesperson, Brig Motlafela Mojapelo, made an appeal to members of the community to come forward and furnish them with relevant information that can bring the culprits to book. “We are appealing to anyone who has information regarding cable theft in the area to contact us, so that we can successfully arrest the people who are behind this,” said Mojapelo.

Death of nurse leads to picketing outside court

“Nearly every week we lose lives. I am really saddened by the passing of Vele. He was my best friend,” said councillor Edward Nkata. He said that Vele had dedicated his life to service in the community. “After graduating as a nurse, Vele got a job in Louis Trichardt, but he sought a transfer to Musina. He is that person who had people at heart,” said Nkata.

Several Musina residents picketed outside the court holding placards reading, “Justice for Vele”, “#No Bail” and “Justice must be served.”

Vele was buried on 17 December at Dzimauli village.

Musina residents are battling to come to terms with the level of crime in Musina. They claim that several lives were lost in the recent past. The level of crime has caused community members to picket outside the Musina Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, 15 December, following the death of Malakia Vhutshilo Vele, a nurse at Nancefield clinic.

A police report states that Vele’s wife, Clementine Mangena, had called them on 12 December, saying that her husband was locked in a shack in Matswale. On their arrival, the police found Vele lying on his back. He was rushed to Musina hospital for treatment, but passed away at about 17:00 the same day.

Sam Itani Ndou (38) was arrested by police on suspicion of murder. He appeared in the Musina court on Wednesday (15th), but his case was postponed to Monday (20 December). He remains in custody. A charge of kidnapping was apparently also added to the case.

Wednesday’s hearing was also attended by Cllr Nkhanedzeni Godfrey Mawela, the newly elected mayor of Musina. After the court session, Mawela told the crowd that members of the community were tired of such criminal activities in Musina. “If the law becomes soft on criminals, then we lose our freedom to criminals. We are not going to allow them to give bail to the suspect,” he said.

The widow, Clementine Mangena, said she was still in shock and unable to come to terms with the situation.

Church in Malavuwe builds a house for struggling Tshilamatanda family

Tshikota residents march to court to complain about rise in crime

By Bernard Chiguvare A group of roughly 100 Tshikota residents marched to the Louis Trichardt Magistrate’s Court last Friday to hand over a memorandum of concerns. The march was organized by the Tshikota Anti-crime Group that was formed a month ago.

The group’s members patrol Tshikota township at night and assist the police in apprehending criminals.

Residents claim that the crime rate is increasing even though the police are doing their best to bring the perpetrators to book. They claim the courts are not protecting the residents as perpetrators

of various crimes committed in Tshikota are often seen walking free even after several arrests.

The protesters sighted an example of a man who pointed a gun at community leaders but was seen walking free, even though the case was investigated by the Makhado SAPS. The perpetrator, according to the residents, targets anyone staying in Tshikota.

“We are always awakened by guns shooting in Tshikota. Cases against these gun-wielding guys have been opened, but we do not see any justice in the cases. In some instances, community members withdraw cases against these gunmen, fearing

for their lives. It seems we are a now heading towards a gangster-driven community.

We as a community do not tolerate these guys’ behaviour,” said Adam Manari, chairperson of the Tshikota Anti-crime Group.

Reverend Joseph Maphosa, a leader of a group of Zimbabweans living in Tshikota, said they had joined hands with the locals in fighting crime. “Crime does not choose whether one is a local or a foreigner,” he said.

The memorandum was received by the acting head of the Louis Trichardt Magistrate’s Court, Mr Bennie Smith. He signed the memorandum and promised to respond within 14 days.

Tshilamatanda (57), who was ecstatic about the three-room house that was handed over to him on Sunday, explained that life was difficult for the family, having to cope without decent shelter. Some members of the church identified him and his family, realising that he had to share his two-room house with his children.

“There was no privacy between us as parents and our children, with the old and dilapidated house we used to share. I’m an unemployed man and one of my children is a graduate but has not yet secured employment,” said Tshilamatanda. Tshilamatanda said that he was delighted that some churches around still thought about poor families. He urged other churches to emulate what The Living Gospel World Mission Church was doing.

Pastor Ronald Makhadi of the Living Gospel World Mission Church in Malavuwe said they were following in the footsteps of the founder of the church, the late Pastor Maswole Ragimana, who had always taught them that working

for God meant one had to do something for poor, needy and unemployed people.

“We have to think about others and help them because they are human beings like us, and they didn’t chose to be in a bad state of life. We have to understand that some people lost their jobs due to the spread of Covid-19 and life became a nightmare for them and their families,” said Pastor Makhadi.

The traditional leader of Malavuwe village, Vhamusanda Nndededzeni Mafenya-Mphaphuli, said he was happy that the church had proved that it cared for poor and needy people by building decent houses for them.

The Limpopo Mirror and Zoutpansberger felt that giving recognition annually to the spokespersons and communicators at various municipalities and government institutions who go out of their way to assist with the free flow of information was fitting.

“South Africa, and Limpopo in particular, desperately needs transparent institutions where access to information is not regarded as a luxury but a necessity. For the media to play a meaningful role in protecting our frail democracy, information is vital. The worst scenario for a journalist is to encounter a spokesperson who does not respect the fact that information is a perishable commodity,” said Anton van Zyl, manager of the two newspapers.

“Fortunately, there are some absolutely amazing communicators who are a pleasure to work with. These are the women and men who work long hours and go out of their way to assist journalists. They are also extremely competent and at all times professional,” he said.

All the journalists and correspondents writing for the local newspapers were asked to submit names of communicators whom they felt deserved to be recognized. Three people were nominated, namely Ms Mashudu Malabi-Dzhangi from the NPA, Ms Tidimalo Chenue from the Limpopo Department of Basic Education and Mr Moss Shibambu, the media liaison officer for

the Vhembe District Municipality. All three were considered to go beyond the call of duty to assist members of the media and inform the public.

One of the criteria looked at when deciding on a winner was the spokesperson’s professionalism and impartiality when dealing with the media.

In Limpopo in particular, certain government communicators view themselves as “gatekeepers”, ignoring requests from institutions regarded as “negative media”. Some government institutions are also notorious for not caring at all about their constitutional duty to be transparent, accountable and provide information to the public.

“This makes it so much more special when you find committed communicators who are almost always available to assist,” said Van Zyl. “The feedback that we received from various journalists was that the three people nominated go out of their way to gather the relevant information and make it available to journalists. They are always quick to respond to requests for further information or clarity and are always courteous and very professional,” he said.

Vhembe SMME Conference aimed at empowering local entrepreneurs

By Silas Nduvheni The Vhembe SMME Conference, which was held at the Masili Guest House and Conference Centre near Sibasa on Friday, 10 December, was aimed at bringing local entrepreneurs together to educate, market and network among themselves.

“We used to attend business seminars as far as Gauteng, but now we try to bring these kinds of seminars home to discuss business matters under one roof as entrepreneurs from the Vhembe region. We have also invited some funding agencies, government departments, and

surrounding municipalities to try to advise our entrepreneurs on how best they can improve their businesses,” said the chairperson of the Vhembe SMME, Dr Mashudu Silimela.

According to Dr Silimela, some 100 entrepreneurs and exhibitors from around the Vhembe region attended the conference. With the negative impact the outbreak of Covid-19 has had on business in the region, where some were forced to close their businesses while others retrenched many workers, they realised that they had to get together to share some useful business ideas.

The event featured speakers from, among others, the

National Youth Development Agency (NYDA), SEDA, Thu­ lamela Business Forum and Standard Bank.

Silimela said they were happy with the day’s turnout and the passion showed by the entrepreneurs. Some had travelled from as far as Gauteng to attend the conference. It was agreed that this kind of conference should be held annually to attract more entrepreneurs, sponsors and funders, which will help upcoming businesspeople to realize their dreams.

The SMME is now planning the Vhembe Business Summit, in partnership with the Thulamela Local Municipality, on 25 March 2022.

Author smiles from ear to ear after winning literature award for his debut book

By Tshifhiwa Mukwevho Azwindini Lutendo Masuwa is bubbling with excitement and joy after receiving a literature award for his debut financial book, Unshakable.

The AfriCAN Honoree Authors’ Awards ceremony was held at the Mozambik Restaurant in Fourways, Johannesburg, on 30 October this year, but Masuwa could not attend the ceremony. On 9 December, he drove to Johannesburg to collect his award, and AfriCAN Honoree Authors’ Awards’ project manager Anthea Thyssen gave him a warm welcome.

“She presented the award to me in what seemed like a mini-award ceremony, and I honestly felt so special as an author who still wants to write more books,” he said.

“AfriCAN Honoree Authors’ Awards made me feel that I am acknowledged and appreciated as an author.

They provided me with an impetus to continue to read, research and write.”

Unshakable seeks to assist and equip people, specifically Africans, with financial literacy in a social context. Masuwa believes that all Africans can realise their greatest financial heights, success and stability only if they emancipate themselves through reading books and seeking African solutions from books authored by Africans whom they can relate to.

“It is not surprising to find people who won millions through a lottery ticket and then lose everything in

a short space of time,” he said. “This is because they lack financial education.

Most African social problems are not perpetuated by the government, but a lack of proper understanding of how the world system has been contrived to keep Africa poor.”

A resident of Musholombi village, Masuwa writes his books with the aim to educate readers on investments. “The prime reason I wrote this book was to share insight with regard to financial intelligence and offer the best knowledge and wisdom that assisted ancient people and still do in our generation,” he said.

He believes that the education it gives cannot be taught at school and, no matter how educated people are and the extent of the salaries they earn, their money will not last long if they are not financially literate.

Thidziambi De Poet said that he had finally managed to record and release the much-awaited album, even though he had to halt its release several times because of financial constraints.

“I am so happy that people are sending me WhatsApp messages and SMSs congratulating me on a job well done,” he said. “To say I feel honoured would be an understatement.”

Vhuhwi hanga comprises nine poems with mellifluous sounds, namely Mmawe, Lithubwa La Lufuno, Kha N'thembe (ft Acolly Mandiza), Ndi Muvenda, Lobola (ft Gloft), Muvheregi (ft Gloft and Zee Bhoi), Muvheregi Remix (ft Gloft, Zee Bhoi and Copper), and Better Days Are Gone (ft Feat Gloft).

“On this EP, each poem carries a unique message,” said the singing poet. “Lithubwa La Lufuno is an emotional song that affirms that all people are capable of loving, while Mmawe

is a dedication to all mothers out there.”

His music is rooted in his culture, and he wants to reach more people with his songs, so that they can get to learn more about African culture. “I am taking the lead in promoting the culture, traditions, and norms of the Vhavenda people through my God-given talent,” he said.

Thidziambi De Poet started writing songs, with the focus on hip-hop lyrics, in 2014. Many people noticed his work after his poetic song, Ndi Muvenda, started receiving airplay on many local radio stations.

“Some of the artists liked it and complemented me, including Vendaboy Poet, who approached me for a collaboration,” he said.

“I worked with Vendaboy Poet on my latest album, titled Ndavhuko.”

The Together We Can Grow Fun Run-Walk brings excitement to rural area

By Tshifhiwa Mukwevho The Together We Can Grow Fun Run-Walk will take place once again on 29 December this year, after a break in 2020 because of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The fun-run walk is held every December and involves running and walking from Tshixwadza’s old grounds to Bvulabadzhi, and it entails motivational speeches, a prize-giving function and live entertainment. The event is the brainchild of Dovhani Mudzielwana, Tendamudzimu Mabirimisa and Rendani “Pastor” KP and was started by individuals and organisations from and around Tshixwadza, Mapuloni-Luheni, Dzamba-Mabulo, Gogogo and Sheshe. “Part of the initiative includes raising funds to donate wheelchairs, masks and other livelihood necessities,” Mudzielwana said.

“We have proposed the date of the 29th of December and this year’s programme will include a community prayer, a Covid-19 vaccination point, business awareness and running or walking of interested people,” said the event co-ordinator, Mr Dovhani Mudzielwana.

Mudzielwana said that, after a one-year hia-

tus, they had decided to re-convene to also play part in promoting awareness of the Covid-19 disease and to encourage people to get vaccinated.

“We have invited the Department of Health to come and vaccinate people,” he said.

“Our event has attracted people from as far Ha-Tshivhasa, Lephalale and many other distant parts of the country,” he said. “This is becoming an event of national interest. We have sparked interest in places such as Durban and Botswana, where people asked us for our concept.

Predicate is writing his future in music industry

By Tshifhiwa Mukwevho Tshifularo “Predicate” Fhulufhedzani (19) from Tshivhulani village in the Thulamela area is quickly climbing the music ladder with his new tracks that are becoming more popular in music circles.

For a youngster who started writing sonnets and belting out verses when he was still in primary school to be composing and creating the kind of music that keeps music lovers on their feet and has them calling for “encore” whenever any of his songs come to an end is no small feat.

“I came to learn that most singers who started out as poets are likely to make it in the music industry,” Predicate said. “Poetry provides an artist with a solid artistic foundation because poetry requires discipline. Even when I was at primary school, I would write poems as a

way of expressing my feelings in relation to what was happening around, but that changed in 2015 when I joined the music industry.”

His musical journey took an upward trajectory when he met Tshimangadzo “Se’Temm” Segari, and together they recorded a gem of a song, Funanani, which instantly gained popularity in the Vhembe District. “We also became known as ‘these two developing singers’ and we appreciated the fame and love that came from our fans,” he said.

“Meanwhile, Tshimangadzo liked our collaboration and offered me to come and record at his studio, because he saw how dedicated I am and the effort I put in my work.

Ever since then, I've been releasing singles nonstop,” he said.

His recent singles are Ndo neta, Thaidzo dza vhutshilo, Funanani, Ndo no zwidowela and Dear family.

He stated that Dear family was his favourite song as it summed up love

among family members. “Love is the cradle of human life; without love we are nothing – we are a society built on quicksand. The sand can bury us at any given time.”

Predicate, who was inspired by the likes of Colbert Mukwevho and Mutendas, said that he also understood that music was timeless, or else he would not have been enjoying the music of his role models in the industry.

Predicate’s EP, titled Elevating, is due for release early next year.

“The project is all about my life as I motivate fellow youths,” he said. “I am doing music as a way of passing the message to all people out there, though. This festive season I've prepared a message to our people on a track called Ndila, which will be

released on the 31st of December.”

Kidnapping of Shyam Premjee

The violent abduction of well-known Louis Trichardt businessman Shyam Premjee (36) made national (and probably also international) headlines. He was kidnapped not far from his home early in April this year. He was only released in mid-May. His abduction was one of many in the country the past year, presumably by syndicates specialising in these types of crimes.

Two Grade 9 pupils of Sinthumule High were knocked down by a vehicle early in June at Ramantsha. Zwavhudi Mudau (14) of Gogobole died at Louis Trichardt Memorial Hospital a few hours after the incident. The other girl, the 13-year-old Thikhedzoi Mavhunga, was transferred to the Polokwane Provincial Hospital.

Thohoyandou businessman assassinated

The incident occurred on Saturday, 18 September, at Jerusalem Eating House in Golgotha, Thohoyandou. A group of men allegedly dragged him outside and drove to Phiphidi village, where they viciously assaulted him with rocks and sticks and afterwards left him for dead on the street.

Daring cash-in-transit heist

A violent shootout occurred between cash-in-transit (CIT) robbers and security guards on the N1 north between Louis Trichardt and Musina near the Waterpoort turn-off on 21 May. A group of heavily armed men ambushed and robbed the CIT vehicle. Explosives were used to blow up the CIT vehicle.

Vhamusanda Vho-Mulatedzi Sinthumule (47), the traditional leader of Tshirolwe, was shot dead on Tuesday, 31 August. Sinthumule’s white Mercedes Benz was reportedly seen parked next to the golf course at Tembisa, with two passengers inside. Another car with three to four passengers stopped next to the Mercedes Benz. They allegedly jumped out, approached the Mercedes Benz and dragged Sinthumule out of his vehicle. During the struggle, he was shot in his lower body and died at the scene.

Legendary retired king of the airwaves Ntshavheni Russel ‘Razz Matazz’ Mashige celebrated his 70th birthday in style. After being “off air” for years, Mashige mesmerised radio lovers when he hosted a two-hour programme on community radio station Vhembe FM as part of his birthday celebration.

Univen student stabbed to death in taxi

A first-year biochemistry student at Univen was stabbed to death while travelling home by taxi from Sibasa-Tshakhuma on Friday, 10 September. Kone Nevondo (20) from Lwamondo-Tshishushuru was allegedly stabbed by an unknown passenger, who fled when the taxi stopped.

A well-known traditional healer and farmer, Joseph Tshikovha-Mulaudzi, died on 13 January in a private medical centre in Thohoyandou after a long illness. Tshikovha-Mulaudzi (84) was described as a selfless, caring person who spent most of his time taking care of ill people.

On Friday, 12 November, the acting king of the Vhavenda, Khosikulu Toni Mphephu Ramabulana, suffered a devastating defeat in the Constitutional Court. The court not only dismissed his application to set aside a previous ruling of the Supreme Court of Appeal (that his previous appointment as king was illegal), but also effectively stripped him of all his powers.

Policeman kills wife, turns gun om himself

A 42-year-old police sergeant, stationed at Vuwani Police Station, allegedly shot and killed his 28-year-old wife before turning his gun on himself on Sunday, 22 August.

Sgt Walter Shumani Munyai was alone in the house when his wife, Ndivhuwo Mercy Sendedza, arrived. Shortly after she entered the house, shots were heard by neighbours. When the police arrived at the scene, the two bodies were found inside the house, lying in a pool of blood.

Suspect killed in Sunday morning shootout

A man was shot dead and three others arrested in a violent shootout between suspects and police in Louis Trichardt on Sunday, 30 May. The shootout is said to have taken place around 11:00 when police apparently confronted a highly sought-after suspect. The situation quickly escalated, however, and a shoutout ensued during which the suspect was killed.

Woman’s burnt body found at Thohoyandou

On 10 July, the decomposed and burnt body of Vhuhulu Sheila Rambani was found at a dumping site at Thohoyandou Unit D. The Rambani family from Muhuyu village outside Thohoyandou searched for two weeks for their daughter, praying and hoping for her safe return. The 21-year-old victim was described as someone who loved education and her dream was to become a teacher.

R5,7 million security tender to protect Toni

The Department of Co-operative Government, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs (Coghsta) remained tight-lipped about a R5,7 million security contract awarded to protect Toni Mphephu Ramabulana. The former acting king of the Vhavenda is to have 24-hour protection by armed guards at his two homes.

Prophet Shane dies in car crash

Shane Shane Nelufule, better known as Prophet Shane, died in a car accident just a few hours before he was to host an Easter Revival Crusade. The 25-year-old prophet, also known as the “spiritual son of Major 1 Bushiri”, was killed when the car he was traveling in collided head-on with another vehicle on the R524 Road between Louis Trichardt and Tshakhuma on 1 April.

Father accused of killing daughter with hammer

A 36-year-old father from the rural village of Matavhela near Mafukani, outside Thohoyandou, appeared in the Mutale Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 6 September, on charges of murder after he had allegedly brutally murdered his three-year-old daughter with a hammer. Mulalo Mathegu reportedly went berserk after a disagreement regarding the child between himself and the child’s mother.

New house for Colbert Mukwevho

Legendary Tshivenda reggae artist Colbert Mukwevho and his family experienced a joyous day when they received a brand-new house, built and donated by the Collen Mashawana Foundation and Afribiz Invest. The house was handed to him on Saturday, 29 May. “As many other artists, my career and income too have suffered a terrible blow due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Our music industry is not reliable enough to survive such hard times. The house is a lot like being honoured while still alive,” said Mukwevho when thanking the sponsors.

We must do so responsibly.

We would like to appeal to motorists and pedestrians to take extra care on the roads.

Let us all obey the traffic rules to enable us to arrive alive, and importantly, let us not drink and drive.

The scourge of the Covid pandemic is still rife. This virus does not take a holiday.

Let us continue to adhere

to the prescribed health protocols by wearing masks, washing our hands regularly, sanitising and keeping a social distance of 1.5m.

We are also urging those who have not yet been vaccinated to do so.

During this festive season, we must promote peace and safety within our living environments, and work in partnership with law-enforcement agencies in our societies in combating gender-based violence and femicide.

We will continue with our quest to bring and deliver quality services to our communities.

This is because we are strategically located along the border between South Africa and Zimbabwe. This puts us under extreme pressure of receiving thousands of people and vehicles passing through our town during festive seasons. Despite the huge influx, we are fully prepared to receive everyone, and we will be working with various law-enforcement agencies to make sure that everyone who is in transit or staying in Musina should be safe this festive season.

We all know that the festive season is the time to come

together with family and friends. We must also keep in mind that our country is now officially in the fourth wave of the Covid 19 pandemic.

When celebrating with family members and friends, we all have to adapt to the new normal by observing all the health protocols to curb the spread of the coronavirus.

We should try by all means to avoid large gatherings, which have been identified as one of the super spreaders of this pandemic.

A very big warning to those who think that Musina is a playing ground for criminals! Our law-enforcement agencies are already out in full force to make sure that those who break the law are subjected to the strongest legal disciplinary action. We call upon our people to report any criminal offence to the police.

We humbly request those who drink alcohol to do so responsibly. Our law-enforcement agencies will never tolerate drunken driving and public drinking. Even pedestrians are warned not to drink and walk aimlessly

in the streets because this contributes to high number of accidents in our roads.

Those who are travelling should make sure that their vehicles are roadworthy at all times. If you are driving for a long distance, take a rest every two hours to refresh your mind and body.

Finally, let us spend wisely this festive season because we still need the cash to sustain our lives at the beginning of the new year.

By Kaizer Nengovhela Magau United were crowned as the new champions of the Tshikota Festive Soccer Tournament, after they beat the defending champions, Madombidzha Try Again, 2-1 in the final at Tshikota on Thursday (16 December).

Both sides played attacking football in the first half, making the match entertaining to watch. United had their first regret in the seventh minute when Maemu Musiamo missed a golden chance and shot wide.

Rotshidzwa Phathela and Warren Senatla of Try Again were booked for different infringements. Not long after that, the speedy striker of Try Again, Hulisani Mbodi, beat all the defenders and passed the ball to Muladelo Ndou, who did not waste any time to head the ball into the net.

The wheel of fortune turned against Try Again in the 34th minute. Their defender, Funzani Tshianeo, failed to stop a cross-ball from Thabelo Nemakanga, and Aluwani Mathelemusa

equalised. Realising that their chances of winning were slim, Try Again abandoned their positions and packed themselves at the far back.

United brought on Lawrence Bilankulu for Pfano Silika, who was looking tired.

By Frank Mavhungu Venda Football Academy (VFA) proved once again that they really mean to be campaigning in the DStv Premiership League next season.

They beat Hungry Lions 1-0 in their GladAfrica Championship League match at the Thohoyandou Stadium on Saturday.

VFA took 65 solid minutes to score the goal that separated the boys from the men. The former Black Leopards and Polokwane City midfielder, Eden Nene, scored the all-important goal with a half volley after a corner kick that was taken by Sedzani Mudau.

The Thohoyandou side moved two steps up on the log standings with the victory. VFA are now lying in the fifth spot with 28 points, four behind the pace setters, Richards Bay FC. They are tied with Polokwane City and Uthongathi FC with the same number of points.

Although they had appointed Mr Joel Masutha to the position of the team’s head coach three weeks ago, Black Leopards’ woes seem to be far from over. By Frank Mavhungu Venda Football Academy (VFA) and Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila (TTM) have every reason to rejoice. They made Vhembe proud by securing places in the last-32 round of the Nedbank Cup KO Competition.

VFA crushed Pretoria Callies 3-1 at the Thohoyandou Stadium last Wednesday, 15 December, to ensure that they proceed to the next round of the prestigious competition. VFA took the lead in the 38th minute when their diminutive striker, Thifhelimbilu “Junior” Magalela, blasted in a rocket from the 25-metre area. The Thohoyandou side enjoyed the 1-0 lead until the end of the first

half.

The visitors from the capital city demonstrated a sense of commitment in the first 10 minutes of the last half. Their efforts paid dividends in the 58th minute. Lonwabo Balfour caught the VFA keeper napping with a long-range half volley.

The Callies’ goal seemed to be an insult to the VFA strikers. They reclaimed the lead five minutes thereafter.

The 16-year-old Magalela completed his brace with a ground-cutter after forcing his way through Callies’ defence. VFA put the matter beyond doubt in the 89th minute when Sedzani Mudau scored with a fine header.

TTM beat Cape Town All Stars 2-1

at the same venue last Thursday, 16 December. Kgosi Dolamo and the team’s captain, Rhulani Manzini, scored for TTM, while Cape Town All Stars pulled one back via Musa Dlamini later in the game.

Black Leopards were booted out of the competition by Free State Stars, who beat them 2-1 at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane. Polokwane City will also not take part in the next round of the competition.

They lost 0-1 to Richards Bay FC. The other GladAfrica Championship League clubs that had secured places in the last-32 stage are TS Sporting, Uthongathi FC, University of Pretoria and Platinum City
