Brutal murder

Early this month, a woman who was loved and respected by the community survived a strange attack. She woke up one night, feeling pain, only to find that part of her ear had been cut off.

She and her husband, who was sleeping next to her, never saw the perpetrators. The matter was reported to the police, but so far, no one has been apprehended.

Now Rirhandzu Faith Makamu (33) of Malamulele is gone, never to return. Her passing away has left the community angry and looking for answers.

Makamu’s death adds to the increasing number of gruesome incidents involving women in the Malamulele area.

Her shaken mother is failing to come to terms with her daughter’s death. “If I know who killed my daughter and why, I will be able to accept her brutal death,” said the inconsolable mother, Ms Nkhensani Maringa. She said her daughter had endured much pain in her short life. “We do not know what happened and why and this makes the pain worse,” said Maringa. On Tuesday, Limpopo Mirror visited the grief-stricken family, who had just arrived back from the postmortem at the local hospital.

day, only to find that her phone was on voice mail. “I tried calling her domestic worker and her son, but could not reach them. I phoned my brother in-law, who also told me that she had not phoned but he believed that she would phone when she reached home,” she said.

“We were very shocked to learn that her body was found lying along the road,” she added. Maringa said they would wait for the police to do their job. “We only hope that they will do their investigations thoroughly and work tirelessly to arrest the murderer or murderers. We are happy the police are keeping us informed of the developments,” said the grieving mother.

Limpopo police spokesperson Lt Col Ramatseba called on people with information to inform the police at the Malamulele Police station or to phone 0860 010 111.

On Tuesday, departmental spokesperson Mr Joe Maila confirmed that the man, aged 39, had died on Monday. According to him, the man hadsuffered from extra-pulmonary tuberculosis. “He was seriously ill and did not respond to treatment,” Maila said. The man’s identity could not be revealed as his next of kin still had to be notified.

Is this the level of service residents can expect from the Louis Trichardt Memorial Hospital?

This is the question after a man collapsed in the hospital garden last Wednesday and was left unattended for almost seven hours by both hospital and security staff.

The man, who was later identified as a Zimbabwean, collapsed right next to the pathway leading to the nursing manager’s office and emergency rooms. Covered in his own faeces, he was too weak to get himself into the hospital building.

The Paquot couple, Julian and Dienie, spotted the man in the garden when they visited their domestic worker and her child, who had been bitten by a snake.

According to Julian, they noticed the man early in the morning when they brought the child to the hospital. By 17:00 that afternoon, when they brought food and clothes for the domestic worker, the man was still lying on the grass in agony. Nobody, it seemed, took any notice of him.

Hospital staff were approached, but they allegedly told the couple that they could only help people when they booked themselves into the hospital.

“How can they act this way? The man is lying in their garden – it’s supposed to be a hospital,” Dienie remarked.

Security guards also shrugged their shoulders and told the couple that “it was not their [security’s] job to help patients.” Everyone, including the nurses, refused to supply their names

A 70-year-old Zimbabwean from Marutaya village outside Beit Bridge had his testicles and part of his manhood torn to shreds, while he sustained a fractured hand and a seriously mauled back when he was attacked by a crocodile.

Mr Jonah Maturure of Marutaya village said he nearly met his death when he decided to take his tomatoes for sale across the Chivake River, whose water level was swelling because of the rains that had pounded the area the previous night. He said when he got to the river, the water level was such that he thought he would easily cross, as he had crossed

via the same place earlier on. He removed his trousers before getting into the river, as he did not want them to get wet. He entered the water wearing only his shirt and underwear.

He said he put the trousers, whose pockets contained some money and his identity document, in the tomato box that he was carrying on his head and got into the river, with the water at chest level. “When I was almost in the middle of the river, I was attacked by a crocodile. It mauled a chunk of my buttocks before attacking my manhood, tearing my testicles into shreds.

“It then grabbed my hand and I could hear my bones cracking. Realis-

ing that I was losing the battle, I let go of the box of tomatoes that I was carrying on my head and it fell into the river with a thud, making some kind of noise. The crocodile released its grip on my hand and moved towards the noise.”

He said both his shirt and underwear were torn in the attack and the battle that ensued. When he got out of the water, he was in his birthday suit, with blood oozing uncontrollably from the ferocious attack wounds. He had to ask for clothes and assistance from a home a few metres from the river. He was rushed to a local hospital, from where he was referred to

a bigger hospital where his condition is now stable.

He added that he was not the first victim as people from the area had constantly been attacked and maimed, while some were killed by the crocodiles.

Maturure however, declined to have his photo taken.

Cases of people being attacked or killed by the deadly reptiles are not new in Zimbabwe. Recently, another Mozambican illegal immigrant escaped death by a whisker after he was attacked by a crocodile while trying to swim across the Limpopo River into South Africa.

Vhembe Marula Festival brings welcome income to unemployed Ten rural women, who are members of Tshidimbini Mukumbi Cooperative in Niani, outside Mutale, have generated more than R25 000 by brewing and selling mukumbi beer to the Vhembe District Municipality. The beer was consumed by communities on Saturday during the annual Limpopo Marula Festival.

“We are empowering ourselves as rural women by brewing mukumbi or vukanyi during the season.

We are also marketing our products through the hosting of the marula festival,” said group leader Ms Agnes Ralioma.

Tshidimbini Mukumbi Cooperative was started in 2008 by a group of unemployed rural women, with the aim of commercialising mukumbi beer.

Ralioma said her group was expecting to generate more money through the annual marula festival to be held at Phalaborwa next month, as they have been given the opportunity to sell their beer.

Speaking during the opening of the Vhembe Marula Festival, which was held at Big Tree Lodge in Tshipise, the acting executive mayor of Vhembe, Cllr Dorcus Mmboyi, urged rural women who brew mukumbi to preserve it, because it is part of the local culture and it will economically empower them.

Musina councillor released on bail A councillor of the Musina Local Municipality was released on R2 000 bail by the Musina Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, after he was arrested for allegedly being in possession of five immigration stamps.

Eugine Khoza (39) is a PR councillor of the PAC in the council of the border town.

Responding to media queries, municipal spokesperson Wilson Dzebu confirmed the arrest and said the municipality was waiting for the law to take its course.

“Cllr Khoza is a suspect and he remains innocent until the finalisation of his case by the court. We have confidence in our justice system and we will give them enough time to deal with the case without any administrative or political interference,” Dzebu added.

Musina police spokesperson Lt Peter Mudau said Khoza was arrested on Monday at about 18:00.

He said the five stamps were allegedly found in a plastic bag, hidden in the engine of the suspect’s car.

“Police searched the vehicle and allegedly found the stamps.”

Mudau said it was illegal for any community member to have those stamps since they were classified government property and were only found at the immigration offices.

“We are fed-up of crime in Tshakhuma” “We walk free without fear when you are behind bars,” was the slogan on one of the placards carried by Tshakhuma residents who protested outside the Vuwani Magistrate’s Court last Friday. This happened during the court appearance of six suspects who had allegedly been terrorising the community.

The accused are the most feared gang leader of Tshakhuma, Ndivheni Mabidi Ligaraba (27), and his five co-accused, Thomas Tshisudi (23), Thompo Ligaraba (20), Khwathis-

elani Ligaraba (19), Fhatuwani Mbedzi (19) and William Mushihana (19). They were arrested in January this year, after they were reported to have been terrorising the Tshakhuma community.

The six are facing several charges of rape, robbery, housebreaking, assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm and assault.

The Vuwani Magistrate’s Court was packed to capacity as residents, especially women, came in numbers to witness the trial.

They protested outside court, displaying placards that read: “We are tired of being stabbed and robbed”; “We walk free when you are behind bars”; “Dear judge, no bail, fine nor parole, only life sentence from Tshakhuma community”; Grannies are enjoying their money without fear when you are behind bars”.

The case was postponed to Wednesday this week (22 February) for finalisation. The outcome of the case was not yet available at the time of going to press.

Man kidnaps friend for dating his wife A 29-year-old Beit Bridge man working on a farm outside Musina, who had abducted his workmate and robbed him of R250 for allegedly having an illicit affair with his wife, appeared in court recently.

Wiseman Ndou of Phalandwa village outside Beit Bridge appeared before local magistrate Miss Gloria Takundwa last Friday, facing a charge of kidnapping.

Ndou pleaded not guilty, but was convicted and sentenced to

630 hours of community service.

He was initially sentenced to 24 months in jail, of which six months were suspended conditionally. The remaining 18 months were further suspended on condition that he do 630 hours of community service at Malala Primary School.

The court was told that on 7 July last year, at around 23:00, Ndou, who is employed at Mappy farm outside Musina, confronted Walter Hlupheka of Maphira village in Chegutu, accusing him of

going out with Ndou’s wife. He then bundled Hlupheka into a cart and smuggled him into Zimbabwe through an undesignated entry point along the Limpopo River.

The court heard that, upon entering that country, Ndou gave Hlupheka a thorough beating after which he took R250 from the victim before abandoning him at Makakavhule village. Hlupheka reported the matter to the police and Ndou was arrested.

Mukhanyo distance learning grows Mukhanyo Distance Masakona recently celebrated its first year of providing high-quality Biblical teaching through distance learning to people in the northeast of Limpopo.

Mukhanyo Distance is able to cross borders of geographical distances, physical abilities and denominational differences. Distance learning can be a lifeline to those who face these obstacles as Mukhanyo Distance brings highquality and Biblical teaching to church leaders.

The visual format of the programme is designed to equip church leaders (pastors, church members, church communities)

After assisting several groups, including Jekete, Mahoshi and Mahara, in the recording of their albums over the past 15 years, a resident of Lufule village outside Sibasa, Azwiambiwi Abraham Masakona, has decided to stand on his own.

While desperately searching for people who could assist him to have his music recorded, Masakona met well-known actor Fhatuwani Mphaphuli, more familiar as “Malume Khura”, last September. They then decided to form the group Amblos.

They were introduced to the Slow Poison Recording Studio and in December they recorded their debut album, Tshitaka. The album was released last Friday.

“The bones must say if I am a witch or not” The 70-year-old granny accused of practicing witchcraft at Roadhouse in Malamulele had to fight for survival against an angry mob twice in the past week. Her family has now appealed to members of the community to sort the matter out in a traditional way, by consulting a traditional healer whom they believe will prove her innocence.

Khubani Grace Macheke had to face off an angry mob twice last week, when they came to her home and assaulted her with sticks and stones. On both occasions she managed to escape death.

Now her family is challenging the community to choose somebody who might prove she is a witch, be it a traditional healer or a prophet.

“They said that they were coming to kill me, because I am a witch. I asked them whom had I killed, but they did not tell me,” said a very upset Ms Macheke.

She said she was worried because there was a stigma attached to the allegations of witchcraft in the villages. “I know the one who told the group and put my name up as one of the witches. That person must prove I am a witch,” she said.

The granny has taken the allegations so seriously that she has summoned her next of kin, who are working in Johannesburg, to come home, so that they could approach traditional healers to throw their bones and say if

she is a witch. “She feels the allegations must be solved once and for all,” said Percent Hlungwani, her daughter-in-law.

“Her accusers will not have to pay money. They must choose the traditional healer and we will pay for the service. We want a traditional healer to throw the bones in front of the chief or headman,” said Hlungwani, who reckoned her mother-in-law was a victim of jealousy.

Her son, Quiet Hlungwani, who also works in Johannesburg, said: “I am also coming back. She is my mother and I have not known her for bad things. Her accusers must prove their allegations.”

Macheke has remained defiant and said she was not going to run away. “If I run away from my home, I will be giving credibility to the allegations,” she said.

The village has been rocked by violence, following allegations a week ago that there were

two people who had removed soil from the graveyard and later taken it back. The community later gave the civic association the sack after they said they were responsible for development and that witchcraft related to customs and only the chief could handle it.

Thirteen people from the village have been hauled from their homes by the police as the community demanded they move from the village, accusing them of practicing witchcraft.

A chartered accountant in the making, Nefale is a second-year BCom student at the University of Cape Town. Rapist caught snoring in victim’s bed A 26-year-old man from Chivi village outside Beit Bridge was caught snoring heavily in the hut of a 72-year-old granny he had just raped, after he fell asleep. This gave her a chance to sneak out and alert her neighbours.

Local police spokesperson Inspector Tinaye Matake confirmed the incident, which occurred at Chivi village on Friday last week. He said the suspect went to the old woman’s homestead in the evening. “On arrival, the man pushed open the door, which was not locked but was only supported from within by a wheelbarrow and a stone. The door easily gave way, but the noise made by the wheelbarrow jolted the granny from sleep. The man entered the room and grabbed the granny, trying to force himself on her, but the old woman, who was already alert, refused to budge,” he said.

A tug-of-war ensued between the two, with the young man trying to gag the screaming granny with his hand. He managed to overpower her and raped her once.

After raping the old lady, the young man fell asleep. When he was snoring heavily, the old lady sneaked out of the hut and alerted her neighbours, who came and apprehended the suspect and handed him over to the police.

Boy commits suicide A young man apparently killed himself shortly after arguing with his father. The incident occurred on 6 February at about 18:30 in Maebane village.

Thanyani Samson Rakgaba (24) apparently hanged himself with a belt at his home, shortly after arguing with his father, Mr John Rakhavha.

According to the police report, Mr Rakhavha used to send his son, Thanyani, to withdraw money from the bank. The money had to be used to fulfil the domestic needs of the family. It is alleged that the young Rakgaba took advantage of the situation and misused his father’s debit card to withdraw separate amounts each time for his own use.

When Mr Rakhavha became aware that money was being withdrawn from his account, and that those unauthorised withdrawals only happened on days he had sent Thanyani to town, it was too late.

He confronted Thanyani on the spot, but the latter denied ever withdrawing any money other than the amounts his father had directed him to withdraw.

It seems that the young man then killed himself as a way to prove that he had not been stealing his father’s money. He left behind three short suicide notes for his family members to understand his reason for taking his own life.

The spokesperson for the Tshilwavhusiku police, Constable Musiwalo Mahuwa, said that an inquest docket had been opened, following the incident.

He says he prides himself on several learners who passed Grade 12 at the school last year who are now at tertiary institutions. “I have received several calls from them, thanking me for the kind assistance. I even helped others to apply for bursaries and they are today studying at tertiary institutions.”

He stresses the importance of education: “Because I passed Grade 12 with flying colours, I even turned down a job offer by a UK company which promised me a R50 000 monthly salary.

The most important thing for now is to complete my studies and continue to give support to high school learners to realise their educational dreams.”

During the visit, lucky listerners went home with prizes. The station’s manager, Ms Tshildzi Shirinda, said they thought of the best way to celebrate Valentine’s Day with their listeners.

General synod terminates relationship with Soutpansberg The general synod of the Reformed Churches took place early in January in Potchefstroom. This was the second meeting of its nature after Synod Potchefstroom (mainly white Afrikaners) and Synod Middelands (mainly blacks) joined to form one synod.

a success in many respects, but the issue of unity of the church remained a common driving factor, which saw the synod taking critical decisions without dissenting voices in the process. In the spirit of unity and wanting to unite the church to move forward, it was agreed to postpone the discussion on women in office (pastor, elder and deacon) until the third General Synod in 2014.

This was a thorny issue among many delegates in the synod, because the synod was torn between those who were for women in office and those who were against it.

The most critical decision that was taken in this General Synod was the adoption of the “turn-around strategy” of which I have been appointed to serve as an advisor to the committee of deputies on this matter. It was a major victory in the advancement of the Kingdom of God. The “turn-around” around strategy is aimed at mobilising all Reformed Churches in South Africa to become more vibrant and dynamic as missional churches of God. This is a necessary development in the life of this denomination, because, at this stage, it is facing decline in terms of numbers, something which needs to be attended to as a matter of urgency.

It is also necessary because it will allow mission or outreach to those who are still outside the church to be at the heart of being church and the practice thereof. Mission has been marginalised for a long time and it is therefore time to revitalise this.

The Department of Missiology, which I head, will also play a critical role in this regard.

A sad but necessary decision taken was when the General Synod decided to terminate its ecclesiastical relationship with Synod Soutpansberg. Synod Soutpansberg is comprised of churches from Limpopo and Gauteng. The congregations affected under Synod Soutpansberg are from Classis Luvhuvhu, Gateway, Gauteng and Tswane:

From Classis Luvhuvhu, the congregations are Niani under Rev KP Rafumbedzani, Mutale (Rev Mawedzha), Mutshundudi (Rev TP Mulovhedzi), Mvudi (Rev MS Muhali), Hosiyata (Rev S Chauke) and De Hoop (Dr MA Mutavhatsindi).

Under the Gateway Classis, the congregations are Fundudzi (Rev HE Netshivhulana), Mutshedzi (Rev D. Tshivhase), Nzhelele (De DR Phaswana), Tshitandani (Rev TR Nemqhotole and Seshego (Rev N Mundalamo), while the affected congregations under the Classis Gauteng are Pretoria (Dr H Ramantswana), Midrand (Dr AE Liphadzi), Johannesburg (Rev T Rabali), Tshiawelo (Rev RM Budeli) and Muldersdrift (Rev E Netshingulwane). The affected congregations from Classis Tswane are mainly situated around Pretoria.

Synod Soutpansberg refused to be part of the General Synod in 2009, citing, among others, lack of transformation and paternalism on the side of the “white” churches. The General Synod decided to terminate the relationship with Synod Soutpansberg because efforts to have constructive discussions that can bring the two together failed dismally.

The General Synod was convinced that Synod Soutpansberg was not committed to bringing the matter of unity to finality. They kept on shifting the goalposts each time that a possible way forward was sought. This simply means that there is no relationship between the two anymore. The General Synod took a decision to provide support to those churches who might experience problems after the separation between The General Synod and Synod Soutpansberg.

Vaccinations are still being carried out in the affected areas. It is stated that forward and backward tracing is also being conducted to check if

Dogs and cats will also be vaccinated. Cases in dogs were also noted in Lepelle-Nkumpi and Aganang and vaccinations are continuing.

Rabies is a viral disease, which is transmitted from animals to humans/ animals through biting by an infected animal. The development of rabies in humans can be prevented if correct post-exposure treatment, including vaccination, is administered timeously and correctly. Once humans/ animals start showing symptoms of rabies, there is no treatment and the disease leads to death.

The public is strongly urged to get their animals vaccinated and to report animals with behavioural changes – domestic animals getting aggressive and wild animals getting tame - to their nearest state veterinary office.

Armed robbery case withdrawn The Beit Bridge Rural District Council treasurer, Tsepani Dube, and two clerks working in the local authority’s finance department, who were being accused of conniving with three armed suspects to rob the local authority of US$ 200 000 last year, had their charges withdrawn after entering a plea when they appeared in court on Friday last week.

Dube (33), Memory Moyo (25) and Nthuseni Mulagisi (37) appeared before regional magistrate Mr Joseph Mabeza on charges of armed robbery.

The charges were, however, withdrawn when the state failed to secure enough evidence linking the three to the offence. Allegations against the three council employees were that they had connived with the suspects,

who are still at large, during which they had allegedly supplied them with information that a huge amount of money was being kept in the local authority’s strong room. The court heard that on 30 August, at around 03:00, the suspects, acting on that information, armed themselves with a pistol and went to the Beit Bridge Rural District Council’s offices.

On arrival, the armed robbers allegedly approached the security guard manning the premises and assaulted him before they blindfolded and handcuffed him.

Soon after that, the three men broke into the strongroom, where they opened the safe with grinders and left with US$200 000. The state also alleged that Dube’s car was spotted at the scene of the incident. A report was made to the police, leading to the arrest of the three council employees.

In yet another controversy involving the Department of Home Affairs, community members in the Elim area continue to wait for their identity documents while the department struggles to pay the landlord.

The landlord was forced to close the Home Affairs offices after the department had failed to pay rent at the Ramavhanda Complex. This has impacted negatively on residents who had applied for their IDs and passports. The landlord has locked the offices full of people’s IDs and passports. The offices have not been functional since August last year, while people continue waiting in vain. The landlord, who is also a local businessman and medical doctor, Dr Andy Ramavhanda, confirmed last Thursday that the department owes him R150 000 for rent. “I was forced to lock the offices since the department was unable to pay the rent,” he said.

Ramavhanda said that he had to move a shop that was operating in his building after the department had approached him to rent office space.

“I even divided the offices and also donated an information board that has been placed at a strategic place for direction, at my expense,” he added.

A concerned parent, Ms Thandi Shikuele, said that her daughter Khanyisa had applied for an ID in September last year. She said when she contacted the department’s head office in Pretoria, they told her that her daughter’s ID had been issued a long time ago and that she could not apply for another one. “It is obvious that the ID is locked inside the Elim offices, because officials have confirmed that there are IDs and passports inside,” she said. She added: “My daughter also failed to go for a driver’s license test because she had no ID. This is very bad and it is really affecting her.” The angry Shikuele said that her daughter had also lost her bank card and when she contacted her bank, she was told to produce an ID. Many people could not go to Bulawayo in Zimbabwe last December, where the Zion Christian Church had opened a branch, as a result of the fact that their passports were locked inside the Elim Home Affairs office.

Provincial spokesperson for the department Mr Sam Moremi said he was aware of the matter, but he could not comment in this regard. He referred our reporter to

the provincial manager, Ms Flora Motsitsi, who was not available for comment. Her phone kept on ringing without response. Ramavhanda, however, said he could not comment further as the matter was being handled by his lawyers.

Home Affairs officials have started gathering at the Elim Hospital.

Mr Avhatakali Marole, the hospital’s liaison officer, confirmed that the department was operating from one of the offices in the hospital.

“We have only allowed the department to issue birth and death certificates from the hospital,” he said.

Residents continue to wait for their IDs that are inside the Home Affairs office in Elim.

The office had been locked by the landlord, following the department´s failure to pay rent.

The group leader, Khathutshelo Mphidi, publicly announced that they would donate their R3 200 cash prize to the Tshakhuma Youth Career Development Project. “Although we know that the community project needs a lot of cash, the little that we have contributed will go a long way in assisting this struggling community project.”

Mphidi, who is also a member of the project, says the Tshakhuma Youth Career Development Project has acquired a building and approximately 3 000 books from different sponsors.

“The only thing that is left is to install the shelves for the development of a library. We believe the small amount will assist, although a lot of money is needed to put up those shelves.

Because the project now has something in hand, we would appreciate assistance from community

members to donate more funds, so that the library can be operational as soon as possible.”

During the choral competition, Tshakhuma Delegates also won themselves a trophy and a certificate. The second prize went to Thohoyandou God Is Love Choir, who received R2 000, a trophy and certificate. The third place went to Tshamutilikwa United African Apostolic Church Choir, who won R1 500, trophy and a certificate.

The next places went to Rotondwa Gospel Choir, Vhomme Vha Khathutshelo, Tshififi Impala Church Choir, Mangondi United African Apostolic Church and Joyceful Gospel Choir respectively. They also went home with cash ranging from R1 500 to R300, trophies and certificates.

Mayor Carol Phiri of Musina was the guest speaker during the event. She encouraged the youth to participate in different community projects to uplift their communities.

March is TB awareness month The Department of Health has embarked on an extensive TB awareness campaign around the country.

The month of March is one of the highlights on the department’s “health awareness calender”, and a huge effort will be made to distribute information regarding the disease.

Several activities will take place in the Vhembe region.

The Makhado TB centre’s Suzan Ngobeni said that the region had already started the campaign by informing the public about the symptoms and the importance of finishing the prescribed medication.

According to the provincial health spokesperson, Mr Joe Maila, the aim of the awareness campaign is twofold: to cure patients and also to prompt the public to know their TB status. He said that the department wanted to get the word out that TB could ruin people’s lives if not treated.

“People must know their TB status, and those who are infected must take their medication as prescribed,” says Maila.

He said that the campaign also aimed to reduce the number of people who were infected with the disease.

Therefore, the public will also be informed about ways the disease can be transferred between people.

Maila said that the provincial department had already met all the health facilitators and had encouraged them to visit the houses where TB patients were living.

“TB does not only affect the in-

fected, but also those who are living with them. Our health workers will teach them how to cope living with TB patients and to manage it until it is cured. We will also be doing a screening to check if no other family members have been infected,” he said.

Tuberculosis, which regarded as a disease of poverty, affects mainly young adults in their most productive years. The communication officer of Vhembe’s District Department of Health, Ndivhuwo Nthangeni, said that the region had also set up a plan of action.

“The region will also embark on an awareness campaign. We will be going to the prisons to discuss the disease with the inmates,” he said.

According to Tuberculosis.emedtv online, Tuberculosis is a disease caused by germs that are spread from one person to another through the air. It said that TB usually affects the lungs, but it can also affect other parts of the body, such as the brain, the kidneys, or the spine.

In most cases, TB is treatable, but persons with TB can die if they do not get proper treatment.

Did mutomboti claim life of man (49)?

Residents of Nngwekhulu-Tshivhangani outside Vuwani were left both stunned and shocked when a 49-year-old man started vomiting blood and died a short while later. This happened shortly after he had drunk some traditional beer (mutomboti). The incident occurred on February 7.

The deceased, Mr Mashudu Sadiki, was known for his light-hearted and pleasant nature and especially for the jokes he always made in the village.

Residents described him as a person who never quarrelled with anyone in the village. Now residents allege that Sadiki might have been poisoned by jealous people who wanted him dead.

The spokesperson for the Vuwani police, W/O Elijah Malatjie, confirmed that the incident occurred at 20:30. According to him, Sadiki was drinking traditional beer with his two friends that afternoon. “He then sent one of his friends to buy traditional mutomboti beer. When that person returned, he drank some of the beer. He suddenly stood up and went to the toilet, where he started

vomiting blood,” said Malatjie. Sadiki quickly became very ill and was unable to walk properly.

“He was then taken home with a wheelbarrow, where he died on arrival,” added Malatjie.

Malatjie said that the man’s body was taken to the Tshilidzini hospital for a proper forensic investigation. He also warned people not to point fingers and rather to wait until such time as a postmortem had determined the cause of Sadiki’s death.

Sadiki’s wife, Cecilia, said that the family was saddened by the news of her husband’s untimely death. “My husband was in good condition when he woke up that morning. We had agreed to go shopping at Vuwani Complex. Two people came by and he told me I would find him in Vuwani.

Everything was fine and he left. I was shocked when I was called to a nearby house with the news that my husband was vomiting blood,” she said.

Cecilia added that when she arrived at the house where her husband was, she found him lying on the ground, vomiting. “I then asked him what was wrong and he couldn’t tell me. He was very weak.

I decided to carry him with a wheelbarrow and took him home. He had not stopped vomiting,” she added.

She said that her husband continued vomiting and while they still contemplated calling an ambulance, he died. Sadiki is survived by his two wives, mother and eight children. He was laid to rest at a local cemetery in the village last Saturday.

Awards for local eco-schools The coordinator of the eco-schools programme in the region, Ms Judy van Schalkwyk, has urged schools to continue looking after the environment. This was during the EcoSchools awards ceremony that was held at Ridgeway College in Louis Trichardt last Thursday.

The ceremony was organised after the implementation of this environmental programme at various schools across the province. Schools that outclassed other schools during the programme received prizes during the event. The prizes included a certificate, an eco-flag and a cheque of R1 000.

Van Schalkwyk said that the EcoSchools Project was an international programme for environmental education and management. “The programme aims to raise students’ awareness of sustainable development issues through classroom study, as well as school and community action,” she said.

She said that the programme originally started in Europe in 1994.

“The local programme is unique in that it had to be adapted for schools within the framework of a develop-

ing country. It is fully integrated into the national curriculum and provides critically needed support to teachers, through a network of node coordinators and regional coordinators,” she added.

According to Van Schalkwyk, the programme is currently running at 12 schools in Limpopo, which includes two schools from the Vhembe District. During the programme, teachers are equipped to link environmental learning to the curriculum easily and implement practical solutions, from recycling, water harvesting from the roofs and vegetable gardens to energy audits.

During the ceremony, Malekwana Primary received a gold certificate, an eco-flag and a cheque of R1 000 for winning the event. Mpebe Primary received a silver certificate, an ecoflag and R1 000, while Ridgeway Colledge received a silver certificate for working towards a healthy environment.

Van Schalkwyk said that almost a thousand schools had registered with the programme this year and nearly 500 received an Eco-Schools award in 2009.

A baby girl who was found by the police after she had been abandoned by her mother at the Louis Trichardt Taxi Rank in December last year, was re-integrated into her family last Saturday. It was war from start to finish in the game between Ngwenani Young Chiefs and United Artists at the Ngwenani grounds on Sunday. Although the game ended in a goalless draw, there was maximum entertainment throughout.

Young Chiefs approached the game like a house on fire, with their midfielders, Tshifhiwa Nedzamba and Lucky Mugivhela, dishing some telling passes to the frontrunners.

Realising that it would be difficult for them to cope with the tempo of the game, Artists chose to frustrate their opponents by playing aerial balls from the back.

Both teams started to demonstrate their rough skills as the game progressed. The referee, Mr Joseph Mammba, refused to see any of the culprits go unpunished. The keeper of Artists, Shandukani Khwalu, was reprimanded with a card for a continued argument with the referee.

That did not deter the players from breaking the rules of the game. The Chiefs’ goal poacher, Norman Mulovhedzi, was also booked for a late tackle on Nditsheni Nemadandila in the 27th minute. United Artists woke up soon afterwards and it was a see-saw battle until the end of the first half.

The second half was no different from the first one as both sides continued to squander chances. Artists were unfortunate not to score in the 59th minute. They were awarded a free kick just outside the box after an illegal tackle on Neo Ramudzuli.

Both sides effected some changes to their starting lineups later in the game, but that did not change the complexion of the game.

Evans Netshitungulu of Young Chiefs was the last player to go into the referee’s book. His sin was protesting against the referee’s decision.

Mayor Carol visits Beitbridge Primary Beit Bridge Primary School pupils could not hide their joy when Musina Mayor Carol Phiri visited their school for the first time after being inaugurated last year. The visit is part of the mayor’s special programme to build a sound relationship between the government and school pupils.

Addressing the pupils, teachers and members of the school governing body, Phiri said providing free and quality education to children reflected the fact that every child was entitled to fundamental human rights and

was to be treated with dignity.

She said the government needed to intervene where children were exposed to poverty, violence, abuse, or exploitation. She said primary education supported children at a critical time in their physical, emotional, social and intellectual growth.

“More broadly, education is a key tool for development and an invaluable means of addressing structural inequality and disadvantage. Primary education provides children with life skills that will enable them to prosper later in life. It

equips children with the skills to maintain a healthy and productive existence, to grow into resourceful and socially active adults, and to make cultural and political contributions to their communities. It is therefore very important for the government to make sure that these young pupils get the education and guidance they deserve.” According to her, teaching and preparing the pupils is one of the most significant things “we can do as a society. Education is what we use to coach the mind to make correct selections,” she added.

New CD for veteran Xitsonga musician

Musina Mayor Carol Phiri addresses Beit Bridge Primary School pupils about the importance of education.

At the ripe age of 76 years, veteran musician Daniel Shirinda, who is accredited with founding Xitsonga traditional music, has released a CD. Shirinda, who has been recording since 1960, has recorded a CD, Thirty Thousands, which refers to the amount for paying lobola nowadays. “My age means nothing. I will sing until I go to the grave,” said Shirinda.

He said he had been building the nation through music for a long time. “I have recorded 764 songs in my career so far,” he added. Shirinda, who is also a traditional healer, has five wives

and 44 children. He says that in the sixties it was hard to record his brand of music as producers said it would not sell.

“When you approached a company at the time, they asked you: ‘Are you playing pop, banqanga or soul?’ If the answer was not in the affirmative, the company would not dare sign you.”

But Shirinda contributed to the success of the music. In 1976, he produced an album which sold nationally.

One of its tracks, He Modjadji, was later used by well-known producer Chicco Twala on his album.

In 1984, a track, Nkata Mina, from Shirinda’s album, Xikumakumani, released that year, was used by Paul Simon on his bestselling album Graceland and was renamed I know what I know. This was no mean feat for a boy from Makhasa village in Malamulele, who never saw the four walls of a classroom from the inside.

Shirinda has received a Living Legend award from Munghana Lonene FM for his role in promoting Xitsonga music. He still performs live with his backing band, the Gaza sisters, comprising his wives.

“Turning back is no longer an option” Highlighting the conference theme Hold tight to what you have, about 1 000 United African Apostolic Church (UAAC) youths converged at the community hall in Meadowlands, Zone 9, a fortnight ago for their annual Gauteng Provincial Youth Conference.

The event was attended by, among others, the UAAC leader, archbishop Elias Mureri, as well as property mogul Mr David Mabilu. He delivered a motivational talk.

“Murahu-rahu ebo, ndi nga si tsha humela murahu (turning back is no longer an option)”, the UAAC youth declared as Bishop Simon Dube took to the podium to deliver a keynote address. He encouraged the youth to declare

a total onslaught on truancy and illiteracy, as the church needs entrepreneurs, engineers, teachers, doctors and other professionals to secure a better future.

Evangelist Mandavha Ramukhadi and Rev Steven Matshavha delivered sermons.

Reading from Revelations, Chapter 3, they both encouraged the youth to hold tight to what God had given them, so as to ensure that no one takes their “Godgiven crown”.

They also warned the youths against indulging in earthly things that will separate them from the love of God. The archbishop encouraged his subjects to support all governmental initiatives as well as distance themselves from

destructing government property during protest marches and strikes. “Our role as a church is to pray for peace and prosperity, not fanning conflicts and discord,” he said. He concluded his speech by honoring immigrants whose entrepreneurial ventures are helping to create employment for the locals, but warned those who peddle and deal in drugs that they are killing the nation and should stop such activities.

The most memorable part of the conference came when property magnate David Mabilu, the managing director of Vharanani Properties pledged R200 000 to the UAAC Student Financial Aid Scheme through his educational fund, the Mabilu Foundation.

Residents of the Soutpansberg are urged to assist researchers in a survey to determine the distribution of Samango Monkeys in die mountain range.

“What is urgently needed is a proper assessment of Samango distribution and population status in order to help the conservation and management of these monkeys. As part of my doctoral research, I am currently establishing in which forest patches in the Soutpansberg Samango Monkeys occur,” said Mrs Bibi Linden. She added that Samangos had also been unofficially recorded in the Blouberg mountain range. Samango Monkeys are found only in and near high-canopy forests, which, in the Soutpansberg, are found mostly along the northern slopes. In this they differ from the widely distributed Vervet Monkey, which inhabits much drier habitat such as acacia woodland.

Samango Monkeys also differ in size and appearance from Vervet Monkeys (see pictures). As the Samango needs a high-canopy forest habitat, its distribution is very restricted and patchy across South Africa. Forests, and thus all the species inhabiting them, are under enormous pressure (directly bordered by timber plantations, suffering from deforestation and invasion by alien plants, etc.). Samango Monkeys are listed as vulnerable in the Red Data Book of the Mammals of South Africa.

“The first step of my project involves generating a list of Samango Monkey sightings across the study area. As the study area is large, I can not survey every forest patch in the Soutpansberg for the presence or absence of Samango Monkeys and am thus asking the public for help in this regard,” says Linden. She requests everyone who has seen Samango Monkeys or has them on their farm to contact her. If possible, the date and time of sighting, number of individuals encountered, name of forest patch or farm and GPS coordinates must be provided.

Disabled Cowboy looking for help Cowboy Muchanjeri (44), who comes from Gokwe village in Zimbabwe, is a prisoner in his own body.

Looking for greener pastures, he arrived in South Africa in 2002, leaving behind an unemployed wife and two children. He cannot walk on his own and he tried to get a wheelchair in his home country, in vain. He sleeps in the streets of Musina and begs for money, which he later sends home to support his family, although he also goes home twice a year.

“Remember, we do not have any disability grant in Zimbabwe and my only hope was to come to South Africa to beg for a wheelchair. I have been here for the past eight years and I have never been lucky. My only wish is to get a wheelchair which will help me to move around easily,” says Cowboy, who moves around by using self-made wooden sticks. Cowboy, who was born disabled, said he did not even go to school because the school was far from where he stayed. “Nobody was willing to push me in a wheelbarrow for 20km to school.

Besides that, my parents used to hide me in the hut because they did not want people to see me. When I was growing up, I crawled to the bush with an axe tied to my back to look for strong wood that would support me when I moved around. These are the sticks I’m still using today.”

His dream is to start a small business at home, but the challenge is that he does not have any starting capital. “Despite my disability, I am very good at welding, but I cannot buy the machinery, due to my poor financial background. I would appreciate any assistance from people who can make the

machinery available for me.”

He says to start his small business, he would also like to have a wheelchair, preferably an electronic one, so that he can also move around alone without anyone assisting him. “I believe in myself and what I need is only the welding machinery and the wheelchair. Points for Rospa?

It remains to be seen whether Rospa United will continue to collect points, when they host Blue Rocks in their Vodacom Promotional League match at the Tshifulanani Stadium tomorrow afternoon.

Blue Rocks are contesting for the league championship, while the match means life or death for Rospa United.

United are lying in the third last position on the log with 10 points. The recent appointment of the former Black Leopards assistant coach, Joel Masutha, as United’s head coach seems to have injected new hopes into the struggling team. Rospa United registered their first victory under the watchful eye of Masutha, when they beat Phungo All Stars 1-0 at the same venue two weeks ago.

Blue Rocks will not find it easy to stop United’s fast forwards, Marks Munyai, Michael Moloto and Mashudu Mashapha. United’s midfielder-cumstriker, Happy Mahuntsi, will be available for selection tomorrow. Mahunsi was out of action for the past three weeks, due to an injury.

Phungo All Stars will play against The Dolphins at the Seshego Stadium. Basel FC will travel to Modimolle, where they will lock horns with Dinare FC at the Moloto Stadium.

Lephalale Young Killers will meet Fanang Diatla at the Mogol Stadium.

Magezi and Modimolle Aces will battle it out at the Ephraim Mohale Stadium, and the logleaders, Baroka FC, will host Winners Park at the Jane Furse Stadium. Nobela All Stars will visit Mighty FC at the Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokowane.
