Woman accused of hacking boy with panga

She sucked his blood

The family of eight-year-old Grade 3 pupil Ento Ngobeni is reeling with shock after a female neighbour had allegedly hacked the child with a panga and sucked the blood from his raw wounds.

The incident took place last Monday.

During Limpopo Mirror’s visit to the family in Waterval earlier this week, Ento’s grandmother and guardian, Ms Tintswalo Hlongwane (55), told the newspaper that the family was still traumatised after the ghastly incident.

“My grandson’s peers rushed into my

house and informed me that a woman had locked my grandson inside her house and that he was screaming for help,” said Hlongwane.

She and her daughter, Blessing, immediately ran to her neighbour’s stand and knocked on the door and tried to open it, but the kitchen door was locked.

They said that they had knocked and shouted out the woman’s name, begging her to open the door.

All along they could hear Ento screaming from inside the house.

“When the door was finally opened, there in the doorway, she was on her knees, staring up at us with pleading eyes,” said Hlongwane. “She said, ‘Sesi Maggie, ni vavisile n’wana (My sister Maggie, I have injured the child)’. Her cheeks and lips were covered with fresh blood.”

Hlongwane and Blessing finally managed to get through to young Ento, who had been locked inside the indoor toilet.

Makhado “hand court case” postponed There is still no progress in the town’s brutal and infamous “hand case.”

The 38-year-old Freddy Azwitamisi Tshikhudo, who stands accused of the murder of Rumbidzai Manyere (36), appeared in the Louis Trichardt District Court again on Friday, 17 January. He was arrested almost eight

months ago, in April of last year, at Elti Café in Eltivillas, when he allegedly tried to rob the business by using a severed human arm.

The following day, Tshikhudo led the Makhado police to the place where the murdered Manyere’s body was found.

Manyere’s right arm, both eyes and her private parts had been re-

moved. Her body itself was in an advanced state of decomposition.

Tshikhudo is currently facing two counts of rape, and single counts of murder, housebreaking and robbery.

His case was postponed until 28 February. He will remain in custody until then.

“I’m a reformed man” - former inmate When he was arrested for murdering his partner and sentenced to 18 years’ imprisonment in 2002, Mr Elson Mutshutshu Muvhango (55) thought his world had fallen apart forever.

While in prison, Muvhango started attending art and craft classes until he fully mastered the required skills. After staying in prison for eight years and nine months, Muvhango was released on parole, after displaying good behavior. He is now using the skills he acquired in prison to make cash. He makes beautiful flower pots, images of animals and decorative ornaments at his home in Malale village, outside Musina.

Asked how he crafted his products, Muvhango was quick to respond: “I make sure that I have enough water, cement, river sand, cardboard boxes, old newspapers and bar soap. At times I also go to the bush to look for snail shells that I use to decorate my products. Those are all the ingredients I need to make any product that I can think of.”

He says it takes up to three days to complete most of his products. “I have to make sure that I put them in the sun to dry. It becomes difficult for me to work during rainy days as I don’t have a workshop.”

Muvhango, who also sells firewood for survival, says the prices of his products range from R50 to R500, depending on size. He says most of his customers are tourists who visit the village en route to the Kruger National Park.

Despite his talent, Muvhango says there are some setbacks for which he needs assistance in order to address them. “I need a ceramics machine, so that I can also manufacture plates, saucers and mugs, but I don’t have enough money to buy one. I appeal to anyone out there to assist me. I also need people who can help me to market my products, both locally and internationally. There is no constant water supply where I am staying as I don’t have a tap in the yard. This leads to a very serious shortage of water, which affects my production. I also need a decent workshop to execute my duties with ease.”

Victim shoots at suspected robbers The sound of gunshots broke the night silence in the vicinity of KFC Makhado on Monday when a victim of a botched robbery chased after two suspects.

The incident occurred near the KFC on the corner of Songozwi and Grobler Street. From eyewitness reports it seems as if the victim had bought some goods from a nearby supermarket and was walking along the road when he was approached by the

two robbers. They apparently threatened him with an object that looked like a firearm.

According to the communications officer at the Limpopo police’s media centre, Const Tsietsi Lamola, it is alleged that the victim of the alleged attempted armed robbery took out his licensed firearm. “He fired two warning shots,” he said. “The two unknown men fled the alleged crime scene.”

According to bystanders, the alleged robbers ran down Grobler Street and vanished into some of the residential properties, with the victim chasing after them.

As the victim turned to go back and collect his groceries, people who were standing in front the KFC noticed one of the suspects scuttling across the road from the side of the bird sanctuary. They shouted, “There is one of them!” but the suspect was gone.

A 42-year-old man, Muthuphei Makhovha, died on Saturday morning when his vehicle collided head-on with a taxi near Tshikwarani.

The police in the Tshilwavhusiku area confirmed that they are investigating a case of culpable homicide.

Three other passengers were treated at the local clinic and one was transferred to the Louis Trichardt Memorial hospital for treatment after the accident. They were all discharged the same day.

Makhovha, said the family was very shocked when hearing the news about the death. "We will have to accept it, because God's will has been done," he said.

A community member, Mr Samuel Tshifura, described the late Mr Makhovha as a hardworking man who had a broad vision.

He said community members consulted him on various matters, even concerning their own private lives. "He was always ready to assist with anything that he could provide," he said.

The MEC responsible for Roads and Transport, Lehlogono Masoga, expressed his condolences to the family, loved ones and friends of the deceased.

"We also urge all road users, motorists and pedestrians alike, to exercise great caution and obey all the rules of the road at all times, without exception," said Masoga.

The local authority’s director of housing and administration, Mr Mbongeleni Muleya, said Singo died in the Polokwane Provincial Hospital on Saturday evening. The cause of his death was heart failure. His condition deteriorated on Friday night and he was rushed to Musina Hospital on Saturday morning and he was referred to Polokwane Provincial Hospital, where he died on admission,” said Muleya.

Muleya described Dr Singo as a man who had a strong passion for development in Beit Bridge. “His death is a sad loss for the council and residents of Beit Bridge. During his tenure, he spearheaded a number of developmental projects, which were worth emulating by other town councils.”

Dr Singo was born on March 28, 1958, in Beit Bridge in a family of ten children. He is survived by his wife and fiveyear-old daughter, Tendani.

Singo, a renowned academic and businessman, joined Beit Bridge Town council on 14 May 2009.

He obtained a PhD in administration from the University of South Africa, a masters in adult education and an honours degree in politics and administration from the University of Zimbabwe.

Prior to joining the Beit Bridge Town Council, Singo was a lecturer at the Unisa School of Public Management and Administration between 2004 and 2006 and he also lectured politics at the University of Namibia between 1998 and 2004.

Ha-Mphaila community gets new bridge The isolated community of Ha-Mphaila in Nzhelele was in an ecstatic mood last week when representatives from the Makhado municipality officially opened the new bridge and access road.

The old bridge and access road were damaged during heavy rains last year and had to be rebuilt at an estimated cost of R12 million.

The community, which is situated close to Tswime Mountain and separated from other villages by the Nzhelele River, was left stranded when floods destroyed the small bridge which was initially used by residents.

For a period of a week, most pupils, especially secondary school learners, were left stranded and did not go to school whilst community members could not go to work. People who fell ill during that time were not able to go to clinics. This ordeal prompted the municipality to approve the reconstruction project.

Community members, councillors, members of the provincial parliament and traditional leaders attended the ceremony, which was held last Thursday. The municipal mayor, Cllr David Mutavhatsindi, said that the municipal council, under his leadership, was committed to bringing good quality service to all people in the jurisdiction of the municipality.

“We promised last year that every month in the 2013/14 financial year we would be cutting ribbons and opening completed projects,” he said.

He thanked the contractor, the oversight committee from the provincial parliament and the Mphaila

headman for committing themselves to ensuring that the project was of quality and finished in the estimated period.

The local councillor in Ward (38), Cllr Thambatshira Ananias Neluvhola, said the bridge had simplified the lives of community members. He related to Limpopo Mirror his experience during the heavy floods. “It was difficult before. Every time when it was raining heavily, we knew that we would not go back home because the old bridge was too small and easily destroyed by floods,” he said.

Ms Tshamaano Makuya ne Nepfumbada is the new provincial general manager (PGM) for the SABC Limpopo.

According to the group executive: stakeholder relations and provinces, Mr Vincent Tsoenyane, the SABC has absolute confidence in Tshamaano and her ability to deliver on her mandate. “She is bringing a wealth of experience and has a credible track record,” he added.

Tsoenyane indicated that Tshamaano’s success in her new position will also depend to a great extent on the team work and support she receives from all stakeholders. He urged all role players to rally their support behind Tshamaano in order to take this province forward and the SABC as a whole.

Tshamaano has spent nearly seven years at the SABC, having joined the corporation in 2006 October as MLfm's marketing manager, and also acted as station manager for six months in 2008.

She worked as programmes manager for Phalaphala FM for two years, before leaving for the Film and Publications Board (FPB) as operations manager in September 2012.

She holds a B Com Marketing degree and an honours degree in strategic management from the University of Johannesburg and has also worked for Amalgamated Beverage Industries as account manager and marketing services manager from 2002 to 2006. She said she was humbled, excited, and happy about this new challenge. “I have learned a lot from my recent job and hope the experience that I gathered and the challenges experienced will carry me forward and come in handy as I deliver on my mandate. Rural secondary school excels against all odds schools who traditionally perform the best, when out of the 128 pupils who had written, 71 received university exemption.

The principal, Mr Tshubwana, seized the opportunity and briefed the MEC

about their plight. “We are very excited about the results. Numerous challenges impact negatively on our teaching and learning here. If we could be provided with more classrooms and other infrastructure, we could improve our results even more, bearing in mind that our school has had a good improvement in results each year.” Tshubwana also said the results would have been different, had it not been for the cooperation and unity between parents, pupils, educators, the SGB and all the other stakeholders.

Arrested for theft from scene of crash Two people, one of them a juvenile, were arrested for allegedly ransacking the scene of a recent helicopter crash in Gwanda and stealing two Nokia cellphones and R800 cash.

The owner of the aircraft, Mr Christian Malila Ndou, who was flying alone, died instantly in the Maphani area, about 6km from Gwanda in Zimbabwe. While others were trying to rescue the victim, the juvenile (17) and Hardlife Tavona Mupaneshure (27) had a different agenda.

The two appeared before Gwanda magistrate Ms Sheila Nazombe on Monday, facing theft charges and they both pleaded guilty to the offence. “I

picked up two cellphones from the site of the crash and shared them with Mupaneshure. We did not know that would amount to committing an offence,” said the juvenile. “We then met someone who had picked up some cash.

He gave us R800 each, so that we would keep quiet. I then proceeded home and told my mother about the cash and cell phones I had picked up, and she ordered me to return them. I then returned the cash, but kept the cellphone,” he added Mupaneshure told the court that he had bought a satchel, a battery charger, a cell phone battery and earphones, using the loot.

The court heard that on 11 January, the accused went to the scene in the company of Khulani Makhaza, who is still on the run. Indications are that some of Ndou’s property was scattered in the bush close to the scene.

The accused persons rushed to the site and found some of the property, which included two Nokia cell phones, an undisclosed amount of money and a torch. The accused stole the property and cash and shared it among themselves.

The police received a tip-off and a search was conducted at the accused’s residences, leading to the recovery of some of the stolen property.

Illegal Egyptian immigrants arrested Two Egyptian nationals, who sneaked into Zimbabwe through the Beit Bridge Border Post, ran out of luck when they were arrested by alert detectives.

Mahmoud Elmelighy Elshiki (29) and Khaled Adly Asdelwahab Sallam (26), both from Gharbeya village in Egypt, were arrested at a service station in Beit Bridge last Thursday.

They appeared in court on Friday, but their trial could not continue because the state failed to get an Arabic translator.

Zimbabwe’s assistant regional immigration officer in charge of the border post, Mr Charles Gwede, said the pair has been sent to Harare, pending deportation to their home country. They are accused of contravening the Immigration Act and failure to apply for a visa at the port of entry. Their passports had not been cleared by the immigration officers.

The court heard that the two arrived in the neighbouring country from South Africa on 8 January.

Upon their arrival at the border post, the two men did not make any efforts to complete immigration formalities. They were picked up by detectives, who were acting on a tip-off. The pair was asked to produce their travel documents and it was discovered that they were illegal immigrants, leading to their arrest.

The arrest comes a few weeks after the department of immigration raised concerns over the influx of illegal immigrants, especially those from countries from the horn of Africa, who have the tendency to violate international laws with the assistance of international syndicates.

Dedication pays off for top teacher Mmbengeni Dedication and hard-work paid off for Mr Nthambeleni Mmbengeni when he received the award for the best teacher in the province.

Mmbengeni is an accounting teacher at Thengwe Secondary School, the second-best-performing school in Limpopo.

When the results were announced in Polokwane recently, Mmbengeni was named as the best teacher in the province in recognition of his good work of producing 20 distinctions, including a 100% pass mark by Tshifhiwa Munzhelele.

Mmbengeni was given a new laptop and a certificate by Limpopo MEC of Education Ms Dikeledi Magadze. When asked how he had made it, Mmbengeni says: “Hard work and dedication are the secrets behind everything. By last year May, I was already through with the syllabus. When we came back in July, I was doing revision with my 109 pupils. By the time we went for final exams, my pupils were more than ready as they had written more than 30 tests,” says Mmbengeni with a smile.

Out of his 109 pupils, only three failed in the final exams.

Mmbengeni says he is inspired by the award.

He is also planning to do better by producing more than 30 distinctions in this year’s matric results.

Mmbengeni, who comes from Thengwe village, is a former pupil of Thengwe Secondary School, like many teachers there.

He first taught at the school in 1981 as an unqualified teacher. He then went to the former Venda College of Education where he acquired his teacher’s diploma before he went to Khwevha

Commercial School in Shayandima, ics to the matrics, from 1989 until where he taught commercial subjects 2007, when he came back to Thengwe like economics and business econom- where he is today.

Mbilwi’s stars continue to shine Pupils from Limpopo’s top school, Mbilwi Secondary School near Thohoyandou, were urged to take education seriously, so that they will continue to shine even brighter.

“Education is the key to success and unemployment is hindering the development of rural communities.

We want others schools in the province to learn from what Mbilwi is doing to make us proud,” said the MEC for the treasury, Mr Rudolph Phala.

Phala, who was joined by the

mayor of the Thulamela local municipality, Cllr Grace Mahosi, Thovhele Gole Mphaphuli, various councillors and some senior managers of the Department of Education, addressed the pupils of Mbilwi last Wednesday.

The MEC’s visit to Mbilwi also coincided with the government’s “back-to-school campaign,” aiming to encourage pupils and teachers to start with the academic activities on the day the schools opened.

“Have we lost respect for funerals?”

Award-winning journalist, Wilson Dzebu relates his personal experience while attending a funeral at Madimbo village. Dzebu is the Communications Manager of Musina Municipality and he wirtes in his personal capacity.

I had to make sure that I went to sleep early that Friday evening, so that I would wake up early on Saturday morning to attend the funeral of my friend’s mother at Madimbo village. The village is about 80km east of Musina.

I was relieved that I had arrived on time and the funeral proceedings started with a prayer at home before we went to the graveyard.

When the proceedings at home were completed, people were rushing to get transport to the graveyard. Record number of malaria cases The Vhembe and Mopane regions are the most fragile areas where one could easily be infected with malaria, especially during the rainy season.

According to the Department of Health in Limpopo, a record number of 765 malaria cases were recorded over the past three months, with 217 cases reported in October, 347 in November and 201 in December.

The Donald Fraser, Malamulele and Musina hospitals are the hospitals that recorded the highest number of malaria cases in the Vhembe district, whilst the Nkhensani, Maphuta and Malatjie hospitals recorded the highest number in Mopane.

The Department of Health has warned that during October to February the number of malaria cases increases.

The reason for the increase is because of the rain and the subsequent breeding of mosquitoes.

The department also warned travellers, especially those who visited high-risk areas during the festive season, to be watchful for malaria signs and symptoms. Some of those symptoms include fever, body pains, headache, nausea and diarrhoea.

“If any of these symptoms are experienced, patients should immediately proceed to the closest clinic or health centre for a malaria test,” said the Department of Health’s spokesperson, Ms Adele van der Linde.

Ms van der Linde said that the higher incidence of malaria was caused by travelling and human behaviour.

“During December, many community members and migrant workers from the province visited high-risk malaria areas outside the provincial boundaries. People also spent more time outdoors in the evenings during December,” she said.

“Unfortunately, there are still patients who delay consulting when they fall sick, resulting in fever and complicated malaria, that can lead to malaria-related fatalities,” she said.

It was established that only seven suspected fatalities had occurred, with four in November and three in December.

The department has embarked on an operation to minimize the transmission of the disease. “All 42 malaria teams from the department are fully operational in the communities with indoors residual spraying,” she said. The department was also educating communities about early treatment-seeking behaviour.

SanParks responds to outcry after killing of elephant The South African National Parks (SANParks) has responded to a public outcry on its decision to euthanize an elephant that had flipped over a vehicle belonging to a visiting British couple, injuring the occupants on 30 December 2013.

Speaking from the Kruger National Park, the managing executive of this iconic park, Mr Abe Sibiya, said the incident was a consequence of parks’ allowing people to enjoy the natural environment; unfortunately, some did so in an irresponsible manner. “While it is expected in

an environment such as the Kruger National Park that human and animal conflict will always occur, it is also vitally important that members of the public visiting various national parks should always adhere to the rules.”

Sibiya said while the park could understand the public outcry and anger towards the management, it was critical for the public to have confidence in the park management.

“The park is managed by adequately qualified officials who are able to make informed and appropriate decisions at any given time.”

According to Sibiya, the deci-

sion to euthanize the animal was not taken lightly but based on the information from very experienced rangers’ assessment that the animal was likely to attack tourist vehicles in the future. “It is for this reason that we appeal to our patrons to act in a responsible manner and give such information as quickly as possible, rather than share it on social media platforms.”

He said that, to bring closure to the matter, SANParks would need the co-operation of the visitors who had taken the video. “The law stipulates that evidence such as this should be

accompanied by a written statement from eyewitnesses as the footage cannot be the only permissible evidence in order to sanction any fine against the alleged perpetrators.”

“Tourists need to change their behavior when on self-game drives … we drive this message in our communication at check-in points, on our brochures and on the permits. It is totally impossible to have constant policing of holidaymakers as the park’s resources are already stretched with many operations going on at the same time,” concludes Sibiya. Blankets and food for fire victims Despite their painful experiences, it was all smiles when members of the two Musina families whose houses were destroyed by a fire received blankets from their ward councilors.

Messrs Ephraim Mkhonto (26) and Rodney Ndlovu started the year on a bad note as their houses mysteriously caught fire during the festive season.

Mkhonto’s ward councilor, Ms Nkele Milanzi, said she learnt with sadness about the incident that led to the destruction of everything in Mkhonto’s house.

“We understand the pain which the family is going through, and

it is our responsibility to come to their rescue in this difficult time.

Our wealth is our people and we have to make sure that these families also enjoy life like other community members. They did not choose to be in such a dire situation and, as a responsible municipality, we feel that it is important to help those who are in need.” Upon handing the blankets to the Ndlovu family, Cllr Simon Madamala said all the people deserved to live in dignity in this democratic country.

“I was touched when I received the bad news that Ndlovu’s house had caught fire. What hurt me

most is the fact that all their valuables were destroyed and none of the family members is employed.

We had to take it upon ourselves to make sure that we contribute something to this family.”

When accepting the blankets, Mkhonto said: “I thought my world was crumbling, but I’m now happy because I know that there are people who care out there. I don’t have enough words to thank my ward councilor for coming to our rescue. We are really very thankful.” Ndlovu added that words alone could not express their gratitude. “I’m so happy to receive these blankets.”

“Why can’t they connect my sewer?”

A war of words has erupted between a pensioner, Mr Liton Mugagadeli, and the Thulamela local municipality (TLM).

The centre of their dispute is the connection of a sewerage system at Mugagadeli’s house in Block F, site 1055, portion 19. Mugagadeli (68), a former official of the Department of Transport, said his problems started in 2007 when he bought a site from the Thulamela municipality and built a house.

“I spent a lot of money building my house and, on completion, I asked the municipality to connect the sewerage.

For seven years I have been taken from pillar to post, with so many excuses being given for the non-connection.

Sometimes these people would apologise for the delay and promise that it would be taken up as an urgent case, but seven years down the line, it has not been done,” he said.

He said the last time he went there to complain was last August and was given an assurance in writing that it would be done very soon. Showing a copy of the letter he got from the municipality last year in September, Mugagadeli said the non-connection of the sewer was causing a lot of problems at his home. “Just imagine a six-roomed house in a township with no toilets. This is not a rural area where people still use the bush to relieve themselves. These people should just come and do their work, finish and klaar,” he said.

ing his problem on incompetent officials who are not fit for the work. “There is no service in this municipality. I have been paying full service for the site for seven years, but they fail just to connect my sewerage. This is unacceptable; somebody is not doing his work. If they do not rectify their mistakes, people will decide to take their votes somewhere else,” he said.

Thulamela municipality spokesperson Mr Ndwamato Tshiila said the municipality had an opendoor policy which Mugagadeli was well aware of.

“If Mr Mugagadeli feels that he is not attended to well, he is at liberty to visit my office or any other relevant office, where he will be assisted,” he said.

The 18-year-old from Mopane Intermediate School attained seven distinctions, namely in Tshivenda (home language), English first additional language, physical science, agricultural science, life science, mathematics and life orientation in the final Grade 12 examinations last year. “I have already been accepted for a degree in Chemical Engineering at the University of Pretoria. will continue to raise the Limpopo flag wherever I go,” she said while holding her precious trophy and two certificates. Her study tips to the current Grade 12 learners include giving oneself enough time to study.

“You must start studying from the first day when the school opens. The best way to approach exams is to organize your studies accordingly, with a timetable that you will always stick to. Try and get rid of all distractions, and make sure you feel as comfortable and able to focus as possible.

He said after seeing that her young sister could not be traced anymore, Rejoice quickly rushed home to inform the elders. “Villagers teamed up, managed to locate the girl’s body and retrieved it,” Ndebele. The matter was reported to the police and no foul play is suspected.

“Please Khaukanani come home,” pleads mother The family of a mentally ill man, Mr Khaukanani Daniel Tshidada (38), who was reported missing some two months ago, is deeply worried about his safety.

According to Tshidada’s mother, Vho-Elisa Tshidada, she was sitting inside the house with him at her home in Madombidzha Zone 2. He stood up and walked out. When twilight came and Tshidada hadn’t returned, Vho-Elisa started to get worried and searched for her son in the neighbourhood.

“I even called all my relatives, but they all told me that he hadn’t come to their homes,” she said.

“I am unable to sleep at night because I am always thinking about my son. I am not sure if he is safe wherever he is at this time of the year.”

Vho-Elisa explained that she felt more pain when she went into his room to do cleaning. “I see his clothes and other articles he used and it pains me,” she said. “I ask the people of this world to help me find my son. I love my Khaukanani; we deeply feel his absence in the home.”

Khaukanani is affectionately known as Khau in the village and neighbourhood. According to

Khaukanani Daniel Tshidada (38) is missing.

Baby drowns in pool The SAPS at Musina have opened an inquest docket after a three-year-old baby drowned in a swimming pool at the mother’s work place on Monday.

According to the spokesperson for the Musina police, Const Dakalo Ramagwede, a 44-year-old mother, who works as a domestic worker at a local lodge, was busy cleaning when she noticed that the baby was not inside the house. “She went to look for the baby,” said Ramagwede. “Sadly, she found her inside the swimming pool.”

The woman then screamed for help and another lady came over and jumped inside the water. She lifted the baby out of the swimming pool. “Unfortunately, the baby was already dead,” Ramagwede said. “As the police, we are calling on all mothers and guardians to always keep an eye on children.”

The spokesperson for the Tshilwavhusiku police, Const Munyadziwa Marindi, confirmed that a missing person’s docket had been opened after the man reportedly went missing on 29 November 2013. “According to

Soap thief fined A slippery soap thief found himself face to face with the law.

Tshifhiwa Nicholas Mabogo (22) appeared before the Louis Trichardt District Court on Monday on a single count of shoplifting. According to information supplied by the police, they were summoned to the Bonjour convenience store at the Total garage in Krogh Street to investigate a case of shoplifting.

The police then noticed Mabogo walking along Krogh Street, with a face towel hanging over his shoulder. Police questioned Mabogo, asking him to produce proof of payment for the towel and a bar of soap he had with him to the value of R23.

When Mabogo failed to produce any proof, he was taken back to Bonjour, where security videos of the incident were reviewed. Mabogo was identified as the culprit.

On Monday, he was found guilty and sentenced to a fine R500 or one month imprisonment.

Ladies and youths produced their vendor's licences which they had secured from the department which deals with traffic control at the Makhado Municipality. They claim that they are legal hawkers and request the municipality to stop chasing them from the streets.

“How will we support our families if we stop selling?” said Ms Florah Manenzhe (56), who started selling in the town's streets in 1993. “I live in Tshikota, and I have got six mouths to feed.”

Emmanuel Muleya (29) has been a licensed RICA agent for the past three years. “I have seen youths my age get into crime because there are no jobs available for most of us,” he said.

“They say we mustn't conduct our business on this spot; where must we go now? All I am doing here is vuk'uzienzele (get on to your feet and do it yourself) but I am being ill treated. This is what musician BlackJahman sings about when he says municipalities persecute the hawkers.”

Another stall-owner, Ms Konanani Kwinda (54), who operates public phones and sells snacks, said she had never neglected to pay for her licence.

“People are selling illegal cigarettes publicly all over the town and they are doing nothing about it. Why us? What wrong did we do to deserve this kind of humiliation?”

The spokesperson for the Makhado Municipality, Mr Louis Bobodi, referred the newspaper to the Corporate Support and Shared Services' office in the municipality. The human resources and labour relations manager, Adv Michael Makhado, acknowledged receipt of our media inquiry.

Duties: • Develop operational procedures for Emergency Management Planning • Use computer technology to record all information as is deemed necessary and provide for safe storage and confidentiality of sensitive information • Gather and present, in a concise form, all relevant information which will assist management to determine, plan for and resolve major security issues. • Overview all daily prisoner movements for suitability with both external and internal movement, inter unit transfers and placement of co-offenders • Responsible for ensuring that effective inventory control systems of security equipment are in place, where necessary undertaking further development, implementation and maintenance • Responsible for auditing all items of security to ensure that they are maintained in a fully operational mode • Assist in the training of staff in routine security and emergency procedures including the design and delivery of training programs • Develop and coordinate the collection and collation of all intelligence and security related information • Prepare and present Intelligence Reports and Intelligence Summary Reports in a timely manner • Maintain a record of all security incidents and investigations as directed by the Chief of Security and Deputy Director Operations • Liaise with the Chief of Security, Deputy Director Operation and Prison Director to ensure a high level of security is maintained throughout the Centre • Daily monitoring of high-risk prisoners • Control of Centre evidence procedures including archive and disposal of seized restricted and prohibited items.

Hard work means success for rural girls An inspirational story of two young girls from Nzhelele has touched many community members, with others calling it history made unexpectedly.

On the eve of the announcement of last year’s Grade 12 results, these two girls were anxious like most other pupils who had written the matric exam last year. Reaping the genuine results of their commitment and dedication was an ecstatic moment they will cherish for the rest of their lives.

Rofhiwa Ntshagovhe and Rialivhuwa Tshisimba, both 18 years old, have proved that where you come from should not stop you from succeeding. Despite staying in a community regarded by many as poverty stricken and that has limited access to information, these two young girls proved that hard work has immense rewards.

Rofhiwa, from Makungwi village devoted her time to her studies and gave up her social life throughout the whole of last year.

Though she was travelling to Mbilwi Secondary School every weekday, she sought help from

various people who assisted her with study resources. She used her weekends to attend Saturday classes and study.

Talking to Limpopo Mirror shortly after the announcement of the matric results, Rofhiwa said she was a bit nervous and did not know what to expect, but she knew she would one day reap the fruits of her commitment. “From the beginning of the year I always told myself that being from a rural area would not stop me,” she said. She acquired distinctions in mathematics, physical science, geography, Tshivenda, English, life orientation and life science. She will study chemical engineering at the University of Pretoria this year.

Rialivhuwa Tshisimba, who stays at the Ha-Mavhunga RDP houses, a community near Makungwi village, acquired six distinctions. She used to travel almost five kilometres every weekday since she started her high school erducation at Tshamakwatini Secondary School half a decade ago. She was incredibly disciplined.

The noise at most taverns in her community persuaded her to go to study at the school, even on weekends. Being from a rural area and attending a public school there did not stop her from working hard.

“I don’t believe in the myth that if one wants to pass well one should go to a former Model C school. I have always believed that action and vision go hand in hand,” she said. She told Limpopo Mirror that anyone could achieve success.

“Look where I come from; there are always bashes and parties every weekend and most young people attend those things instead of studying,” she said.

“I just want to express my great gratitude to my stepfather, my mother, my teachers and everyone who helped me to climb this mountain,” she added.

Rialivhuwa acquired distinctions in Tshivenda, English, mathematics, geography, life orientation and life science. She is going to study aeronautical engineering at Witwatersrand University.

Destitute couple overjoyed with house Despite the fact that it has been two weeks since a posh house was handed over to them by the Minister of Rural Development and Land Reform, Gugile Nkwinti, the Ndlovu couple of Shibangwa village in Malamulele are still overjoyed.

The house was built for the destitute family of four, Mr Edward Ndlovu (60) and his wife Mjaji (57) and their two children.

They are unemployed and survive on the grant Mr Ndlovu receives as a disabled person.

That, however, changed after the intervention of 21 youths. They are in a national rural service corps at Madzahisi College at Madonsi, and decided to build the house for the poor family as part of their training.

This is a modern six-roomed house, with three bedrooms, a

bathroom, kitchen and a lounge.

When presenting the house, Nkwinti was full of praises for the youths and the director of Madzahisi College, Dr Tinyiko Khosa, who donated material for the house.

Calling them “activists for development,” Nkwinti said local young people and the business community should take a cue from them and do something for the community.

He said the youths phoned his office and said they wanted the Minister to come and hand over the house, and he was not going to disappoint them. “I know that you are unemployed as you have finished your training. My advice to you is to come together as a cooperative and build houses for people,” he said.

came from Sekhukhune district, while some were from Mopani.

She said they decided to leave a lasting legacy in the area, after they had seen the conditions the family were living under while they were doing their training in the area.

The new owner of the house, Edward Ndlovu, said getting a house was a miracle for him.

“When sleeping in my hut, I could see the moon from inside, and during heavy rains we would go and ask for shelter in my sister’s huts,” he said.

His sister, Ms Celia Ndlovu, said the donation to her brother was God’s answer to his suffering.

The family received another boost, when the head of community affairs of Do Lite Transport, Mr Andrew Kotoane, presented them with furniture.

Border jumper nearly drowns in river A suspected border jumper narrowly escaped death when he was swept away while attempting to cross the flooded Limpopo River into South Africa illegally.

in the process of crossing the Limpopo River, Makuvaza was swept away by the water, while his friends managed to swim to safety. They then started to search for him and found him on an island and sought assistance from local villagers, who helped him to cross back to Zimbabwe,” said Ndebele.

He expressed concern over drowning cases in the border

town, saying that it was a common phenomenon during the rainy season.

Ndebele urged members of the community to desist from illegally crossing the flooded and crocodile-infested Limpopo River, saying they were putting their lives at risk. “We encourage people to apply for passports and cross the border by using designated points,” he said.

He mentioned that he decided to wear a uniform in order to encourage pupils and show

them that it is important to wear their uniforms. “A uniform instils a sense of discipline in the pupils. Discipline leads to a better a performance, which in turn ensures the best results.

We will still visit other schools and encourage pupils and their teachers that, if they work hard, they will produce the best,” he said.

Vhembe District senior manager Mr Shumani Ravhuanzwo, who was present during the visit, hailed Mphaphuli as a good example to the pupils, saying it would encourage others to follow his example.

Top performing schools aim for the sky Two of the best-performing schools in Limpopo, Tshivhase High and Thengwe Secondary, have promised that they will do their utmost to produce a 100% pass rate in this year’s matric results.

The two principals, Messrs Fhatuwani Maselesele (Tshivhase) and Nkhangweleni Nemudzivhadi (Thengwe), made a bold promise during a special visit to their schools by Premier Stan Mathabatha, Education MEC Dikeledi Magadze, the executive mayor, Cllr Tshitereke Matibe, Thovhele Kennedy Midiyavhathu Tshivhase, the district senior manager, dr Rammbiyana, and other dignitaries.

Mathabatha and his entourage visited the two schools on Wednesday, on the day the

schools re-opened. Tshivhase obtained a 98% pass rate as only eight pupils out of their 392 failed. The school is based in the deep rural area of Vhufulwi and produced the top pupil in the whole province, Ntsundeni Ndou.

Ndou, who scored more than 1 700 marks in the final matric results, was given a Toyota Etios, a laptop, an iPhone, an iPad, a bursary of R50 000 and a R10 000 cash price in recognition of his hard work.

Maselesele attributed their success to their dedicated team, which includes teachers, parents and pupils. Maselesele said the school did not have enough teachers for the more than 2000 pupils. “The bad road from the main road to the school also

makes it difficult during rainy days,” said Maselesele.

Mathabathe said he was happy that the school was promising a 100% pass rate for this year’s results. He said he was convinced that the school would deliver on its promise, which would make it easier for the province to reach its target of producing a 70% pass rate this year.

“We will do our best to make sure that we provide answers to your challenges.” He also encouraged learners to choose relevant courses, so that they can be employable.

Thovhele Tshivhase said he was also honoured the school’s success. He said the Tshivhase Development Foundation would support the school as they had done before.

A former lecturer at the University of Venda, Prof Jaco Kruger, is the editor of a new collection of Venda ngano stories. Kruger is attached to the School of Music at the Potchefstroom Campus of the North West University (NWU).

Entitled The girls in the baobab: Venda stories from the Limpopo Valley (2013), the collection contains 43 ngano stories translated into English.

Ngano are short stories that integrate speech with chanting and singing. The translations are accompanied by their original Tshivenda texts, song transcriptions and interpretations, while the entire collection is discussed in a comprehensive introduction.

The collection was documented from 2005 to 2011 in the Niani district by Kruger and Mr Mathuvhelo Mavhetha and translated by Rev Pfananani Masase and Mrs Tshifhiwa Mashau.

It is the third in a series on Venda verbal musical arts, focusing especially on the ngano genre. It has been produced under the auspices of a wider research project into local forms of musical art in South Africa, conducted by the School of Music at North West University (Potchefstroom Campus).

According to Kruger, the ngano project is an attempt to document as much as possible “of a rapidly disappearing art form. Ngano stories are of ancient, pre-colonial origin and have decreasing value in a

changing world. Ngano performance no longer is a wide-spread communal activity, and very few people are able to recall ngano stories from their earlier lives.

It appears as if current the older generation is the last to carry memories of this once vital performance art.”

Contrary to popular belief, Kruger said, ngano are not mere “fireside tales” for children. “The

ngano genre in Africa is one of the foundations of morality and social relations, since they confirm and critically evaluate social norms and roles.”

He added that the ngano project welcomes aboard anyone concerned about the disappearance of ngano and asks interested persons to contact him at Jaco.

Joe’s Express beat Mighty in controversial match Joe’s Express continued to pave their way up the log by beating Mighty FC 1-0 in their Safa Second Division League match at the Makwarela Stadium on Saturday.

The game was characterized by wasted scoring opportunities and numerous stoppages. Express could have scored more than three goals in the first half, but their strikers were unlucky. Their bulldozer striker, Rendani Madega, was the first player to cause an upset. He received a pre-cooked pass from Pfariso Mukoma and hesitated for far too long to unleash from the edge of the box and

lost possession. Instead of replacing him before the end of the first half, the coach of Express, Mr Edwin “Cafu” Ramphabana, blundered by allowing Madega to play until a few minutes into the last half, while it was evident that the player was down and out. The referee, Mr Sphiwe Nyambi, warned Hymer Munyai of Express with card when the game was 27 minutes old.

Lenox Mabila, who replaced Rendani Madega, combined well with Thembisani Nevhulamba at the forefront.

Renovated Makhuvha Stadium fit for play at last The much-talked-about Makhuvha Stadium will host the first league match tomorrow, bringing to an end months of speculation that the stadium will only be ready for use in the next soccer season.

The National First Division (NFD) league match between Black Leopards and Baroka FC will be staged there. A representative from the Premier Soccer League, Prof Ronnie Scholtz, inspected the stadium last Thursday and gave it the thumbs up.

Lottery Board donates sport equipment Maluta High school recently received a donation of sport equipment to the value of nearly R100 000 from the National Lottery Board.

The donation includes four soccer kits, three netball kits, volleyball kits, skipping ropes, chess sets, whistles, athletics gear, score boards, soccer boots, balls and cricket bats and other equipment.

The chairperson of the Lottery Board, Prof Alfred Nevhutanda,

said that he was aware of the hardships faced by many parents in the area. According to him, the objective of the donation was to instil important values through participation in sports. It will also increase the pupils’ physical, emotional and intellectual potential, promote mass participation in schools for a better health while reviving a culture of learning in schools, he added.

The principal of the school, Mr Joseph Phungo, could not

hide his happiness. He said it was good to be receiving from the lottery. “We salute you, and we will always remember your helping hand.” He told the pupils to count themselves lucky to be receiving the sport equipment.

He urged businesspeople from the area to follow in the lottery´s footsteps.

One of the pupils, Khodani Mathivha, promised the Lottery Board that they would handle the equipment with care.

Two drown in separate incidents The police in the Thohoyandou cluster have sent a stern warning to people who go swimming to do so under the supervision of a skilled swimmer.

This follows the drowning of two young men in the Tshaulu and Tshifudi areas on Saturday.

Cluster spokesperson Maj Mashudu Malelelo said the

first incident happened at Tshaulu-Masiwana at about 12:30, when Gudani Makuya (17) was swimming with friends at the nearby Tshilaphala River.

The second incident happened at the Tshamutshedzi River, where 21-year-old Rinae Nekhambele was also swimming with friends.

“We know that it is hot now, but we are making a call on communities to refrain from venturing into dams and rivers for the purpose of swimming without the supervision of someone who can swim. We are losing so many innocent lives due to drowning during the hot season,” added Malelo.

Huge humiliation for Black Leopards As if they were not campaigning in the same division, the National First Division League match between Black Leopards and African Warriors at the Charles Mopedi Stadium on Sunday afternoon was a real mismatch. The final score was 5-2 for Warriors.

The defeat has been a big blow to the Thohoyandou outfit, as collecting maximum points would have narrowed the points gap between them and the logleaders, Chippa United, to 5, with Lidoda Duvha still having a match in hand.

The unexpected happened

at the Makhulong Stadium in Thembisa last Saturday. Milano United, who had been leading the pack since the beginning of the season, dropped points to Jomo Cosmos. Cosmos rose to the occasion and proved all their critics wrong by beating United 1-0. The victory was the second in a row for Comsos. They narrowly beat African Warriors 1-0 at the same venue last Wednesday afternoon.

Cosmos moved three steps up on the log, following the results of the two matches.

Phungo overpower Rospa Phungo All Stars were too strong for Rospa United in the Safa second division Vhembe derby played at Louis Trichardt (Makhado) rugby stadium on Saturday.

As if they were hypnotized, United were out of touch throughout the first half. They were lucky not to concede goals during the first 45 minutes. Apart from this, United had their chances, but Lowis Chauke disappointed his team mates when he beat all defenders, including the goalkeeper, Hoven Gogo, just to shoot wide.

The second half was war from the onset. Stars started this half at a very fast pace, giving their opponents not a moment to breathe. Their midfielders kept on penetrating the defence, feeding the front-runners with balls.

United defender Tshifhiwa Mmbooi did not live up to expectations as he was used as a freeway by Stars’ strikers. Mmbooi

managed to get one into the net, however, following a free kick that was awarded after a Stars player committed a foul on Kirsten Mathole. The goal was disallowed because the referee, Mr Eric Munyai, had awarded an indirect free kick and the ball did not touch a second player before hitting the net.

Clement Shiburi of Stars should have scored in the 78th minute, but his shot hit the crossbar and bounced back into the field of play.

The only goal of the match belonged to Llody Davhana, when he scored from a free kick late in the match.
