Tshiozwi killers on the loose

By Kaizer Nengovhela The search continues for the two gunmen who shot and killed a tavern assistant in cold blood in the early hours of Saturday, 18 June, at Tshiozwi village.

According to police spokesperson Brig Motlafela Mojapelo, the incident occurred at around midnight when the assistant and his manager closed the tavern for the night and headed for the house adjacent to the tavern with the day’s cash. As they opened the gate between the house and the tavern, they were allegedly accosted by two men wearing balaclavas, who demanded the money. The tavern manager gave them the money, then ran away while the assistant was left faced with the gunmen. He (the tavern manager) watched helplessly from his hide-out as the robbers allegedly opened fire on the assistant, killing him, and fled the scene with an undisclosed amount of cash.

The deceased, identified as Simbarashe Mutambadiki (34), was a Zimbabwean national.

Preliminary investigations by

the police revealed that he had four bullet wounds to his body.

Mojapelo said that the tavern manager had been highly traumatised by the incident.

He confirmed that a case of murder was being investigated and that the two suspects were still on the loose. He said that the police would be working around the clock to see the robbers behind bars soon.

One of the community members, who wished to remain anonymous, said they had heard gunshots on the night of the incident. “We heard the gunshots but did not know where they came from,” he said.

“Shortly thereafter, we received the terrible news and rushed to the scene where the tavern assistant was killed. This is a hard time for us all. The man could not even hurt a fly, but they decided to kill him anyway. We are leaving everything in God’s hands and strongly believe that the police will do their job and apprehend the killers.” He said that the community and businesspeople did not feel safe at all after the incident.

the incident had left the family in a state of shock and confusion. “Imagine having seen your family member a few hours back, healthy and strong, and all of a sudden being notified that he is dead!” He said that the family now wished to see the law take its course. “We want to see a severe punishment.

These men have to pay for what they have done,” he said.

Vhamusanda Vho-Makhado Sinthumule said that they were just hoping that the police would be doing their part in making sure that the culprits were brought to book.

“As leaders, we are concerned about the death of defenceless people. We feel that the community must stand up and join the police in the fight against crime. We cannot just sit down and watch while our people are being killed,” he said.

Mojapelo made an appeal to anyone who might have information relating to the incident or suspects to contact them on 08600 10111, or at their nearest police station. The police promised to treat any information with great confidentiality.

Lindelani wins coveted PanSALB language prize

By Elmon Tshikhudo Former Vhembe FM presenter and Tshivenda language practitioner Ms Lindelani Vinoliah Tshifhango won a language and literature award at the prestigious PanSALB Multilingualism Awards last Wednesday.

The awards ceremony was held at the Galleria Conference and Events Centre in Sandton, Gauteng. She was honoured for her contribution towards the growth of the Tshivenda language as volunteer for the Nalibali literary organization, as well as her contribution as a writer and leading facilitator at the Tshedza Reading Club, which she had founded with the help of Nalibali.

Tshifhango (28) is originally from Tshisahulu, outside Thohoyandou, but now resides in Johannesburg. The award has elevated her to instant celebrity status as she became the talk of the town. “I still cannot believe it. Winning the prize is a dream come true for me because I have been advocating and promoting the Tshivenda language for a long time. Just being nominated for the prestigious awards was enough and a big honour for me; winning the prize was a bonus. This feels great,” she said.

Tshifhango said it would not have been possible without her late grandmother, who taught her to be fluent in Tshivenda and inspired her love and passion for the language. “My deepest grati-

tude goes to my late grandmother, Ms Nkhanedzeni Nyamukamadi Matsheka, who ensured that I always spoke Tshivenda fluently and taught me everything she knew about the language and culture.

I just wish she was still alive to witness this. I dedicate this award to her, and may her soul rest in peace,” she said.

“To all South African youths, our constitution states that all South African languages are equal, which means that your mother tongue is just as important as the medium of instruction, which is English. Be proud of who you are and where you come from, so that the other tribes can learn to appreciate and respect our language through you. I would also love to thank my family and friends for their unwavering support. Not to mention Nalibali for allowing me to form my own reading club and PanSALB for honouring me.

In support of this campaign, a group of DA members were joined by community members at the Shayandima shopping complex in Thulamela on Thursday, 16 June, to highlight their plight. The protesting group chanted and displayed their placards outside the busy complex and many concerned residents joined in signing the petition.

DA councillor Thelma Marole said they felt it necessary to come out and conscientise and get support from the local communities to challenge the government on these shocking price increases. “The alarming price of fuel affects us all, and it hits mostly us in rural areas, where unemployment is rife. These people cannot afford the increasing

food prices and travelling by public transport is almost impossible as bus and taxi fares go up. We need to stand up as a nation and say no to this. We are suffering and we ask of everyone to be part of this, so we can show government that we are not happy,” she said.

Ms Mashudu Madzaga, a local resident who also signed the petition, feels that the government is not taking the masses into consideration at all with these price increases. “We are still fresh from the Covid pandemic, where many jobs were lost, and now they keep increasing fuel and food prices. We cannot even afford to buy a loaf of bread as the prices are now sky high. This must stop, otherwise we will revolt against this government,” she said.

Criminal gangs target Sinthumule

By Kaizer Nengovhela A spate of armed robberies at businesses around the Sinthumule/Kutama area has become a cause of great concern.

Business owners complain about the local police’s apparent inability to protect them against criminals. Since May this year, at least seven businesses have been robbed at gunpoint, where the criminals took off with money, cars and cellphones. Last Saturday (18 June), a tavern assistant was shot dead during a robbery at Tshiozwi.

Residents say that criminals have taken control of the area, once considered to be one of the safest places in the country to live. They are starting to question the reason behind

police members’ slackness in responding to or investigating crime-related complaints, suspecting that this may be to protect some of these syndicates or offenders.

A resident and business owner in the area, who wishes to remain anonymous, says the people are living in fear for their lives as well as the safety of their businesses, wondering each day who will be next. “We are not safe at all here, and we are very disappointed in the police, who take a long time to respond to complaints.” He said that when his own business was robbed, the police took more than three hours to arrive at the scene, even though the police station is less than four kilometres from his business.

By Silas Nduvheni Residents from Ward 13 in Mukula village outside Thohoyandou have decided to start fixing their own streets as it became apparent that, after years of pleading, the Thulamela Local Municipality (TLM) was not going to deliver on their promises.

One of the community leaders in Mukula-Mukondeni village, Mr Ratshisevhe Rakhunwana, said the community had approached the local municipality for many years to have their streets gravelled and upgraded, but to no avail.

area also stabbed his estranged wife to death before hanging himself.

According to police spokesperson Brig Motlafela Mojapelo, the circumstances leading to this recent tragedy were still sketchy, but Nematswerani is suspected of having accused his wife of having another lover.

The couple reportedly had a heated argument before he allegedly stabbed Mukhatho to death with a sharp object and left her body, along with a bloodied knife, at the house. He then went to his mother’s home in another village, where he

but nothing came of it. So, we decided to start doing things for ourselves through what we call Vukuzenzele, which means to ‘get up and do it yourself ’, and we started collecting funds.”

According to Rakhunwana, the upgrading of Tshinaubve Street will help link Mukula-Mukondeni village and the new extension at Tshidimbini village. Besides that, he said, their vehicles would last longer as the bad road had caused a lot of damage to them.

“We agreed that there would be no specific amount when we collect money between ourselves. Each one gives what he or she can afford. We hired an excavator to remove all the big rocks from our street.

The response of the mayor of TLM, Sarah Rammbuda, to these developments was that she appreciated what the community members in Mukula-Mukondeni village had done. “Thulamela Municipality has 41 wards that all need attention with building roads, supplying electricity and water, and we cannot do it all at a given time. We recommend that communities practice Vukuzenzele, as we have backlogs in terms of delivering services. It is the community members who chip in to start improving roads in their villages themselves that make the difference,” said Rammbuda.

Even though she comes from a business family, she said she had to raise her own finances to start the business in May this year. When asked about the challenges she faced in running such a business, she said the main challenge was that even though they were suffering, some young people were not serious about work.

“When they get paid, they don’t come to work the following day. It is not easy to train them to do the job properly.

Two waste-removal employees in hospital after truck overturns

Two employees of the Thulamela Local Municipality in Thohoyandou’s waste management section are still recuperating in hospital after the driver lost control and their truck overturned along the Ha-Khakhu/ Tshithuthuni village road on Friday, 17 June.

According to the spokesperson for the Thulamela municipality, Mr Nndwamato

Tshiila, the two employees were on their weekly routine of removing waste in Ha-Khakhu and surrounding villages in the Mutale area when the incident occurred.

The circumstances surrounding the accident are still uncertain. The workers sustained serious injuries and were sent to Siloam Hospital but were later transferred to the Netcare hospital in Polokwane. At the time of our going to press, they were reported to be in a stable condition.

“As Thulamela Local Municipality, we wish them a speedy recovery, so that they may come back to work as usual.

Accidents do occasionally happen, but we are still investigating what might have caused the accident,” said Tshiila.

Khubvi players survive horror crash

Two players of Khubvi Peace Makers were seriously injured when the bakkie they were travelling in hit a truck from the back at Khubvi village on Sunday afternoon. They were on their way to play in a league game against Muhuyu XI Experience when the accident happened.

One of the players, who was released from the hospital on Sunday night, said they were surprised when the truck in front of them suddenly stopped and there was a big bang. “All I remember is hearing cries from other players, and the next thing I found myself in hospital,” he said.

Meanwhile, the vice-president of the Thulamela Local Football Association, Mr Ephraim Singo, said that they were shocked to hear about such an accident involving the team. “We send our condolences to the team, and we wish the players a speedy recovery,” he said.

Light of Life Medical Centre opens in town Advertorial by Kaizer Nengovhela A state-of-the-art health centre, the Light of Life Medical Centre, was officially opened by Thovhele Vho-Vele Kutama on Friday (17 June) at 34 Rissik Street in Louis Trichardt.

The new health facility is the brainchild of Dr Phathutshedzo Tshinetise-Maligana. According to her, the focus was not only on a modern design but also on energy efficiency.

She said that the new health centre would bring quality health services closer to the people of Louis Trichardt and the surrounding villages. One of the prominent features of the new health centre is that it will operate 24-hours per day. According to Tshinetise, she wanted to make sure that patients were attended to whenever they needed to seek medical assistance. “It is an undisputed fact that where there is light, there is life.

Because light was the first thing created by God, I decided to build the new health facility with the view of removing the darkness among our people by bringing health services that were previously not available to their

doorsteps,” she said. The Light of Life Medical Centre boasts its own small intensive-care unit with beds, as well as a waiting room, a restaurant and a pharmacy. Outside, an ambulances service and a motor-towing service are on standby to assist. The new health facility is offering the services of a clinical psychologist, a physiotherapist, an optometrist and a dentist. The services are always readily available at the centre. Other health specialists, according to Dr Tshinetise, will be available at the centre at specific times.

While the health centre will be accommodating various health practitioners in one building, Tshinetise said that the strength of the centre would depend on the support of the people.

“I’ve done my job, it is now up to members of the community to make use of the health centre,” she said.

When addressing the people, Cllr Kanukani Maphubu described Dr Tshinetise as a real “people’s doctor”, because of her participation and involvement in community matters.

He further said that the main challenge facing the health profession currently was the inability to find dedicated health practitioners such as Dr Tshinetise. He encouraged parents to encourage their children in turn to pursue careers in the medical profession as the country faces a shortage of doctors.

Thovhele Vho-Vele Kutama urged the community to take care of the facility, “so that it can be used by generations and generations to come. Dr Tshinetise provided this medical centre to make sure that you get easy access to health services in your own town,” he said.

“We have to stop judging them and show them love. What they (drug addicts) are going through is not easy. It is very hard for them to quit. The main aim here is to win them back into our communities,” and come rain or shine, she makes sure that they get fed.

Manngo cooks for them every Sunday, but often also takes food for them from her daycare centre. The feeding scheme is already confirming that an enormous need exists within this homeless community. “When I started the feeding scheme a month ago, I fed around 40 homeless people. Two Sundays ago (12 June), I fed over a hundred people. The number is fast growing. It is clear that we have a problem on our hands. How many more young people will end up becoming hobos? I wish other people would join me and help me fight this enemy that is destroying our youth.”

Naturally, this initiative comes with many different challenges. “We can’t force them to go to rehab, but we can love them until they are ready for rehabilitation. Some of them feel they are ready and constantly ask me if I have found a place for them to get rehabilitated. I know I cannot feed all of them, but I can try to put a smile on a few faces,” she said.

When asked why she had started with the feeding scheme, Manngo replied, “I like to help people who are in situations that I have gone through. I once lived on the streets with my twoyear-old baby. I didn’t do drugs, but I was homeless and eating from dustbins. I had a family and a home, but I was too ashamed to go home. I was also helped by someone I didn’t know.”

Besides being an activist, ambassador, public speaker and poet, the man is also a dancer, model, DJ and master of ceremonies. He has performed at various big events, such as the Nelson Mandela Centenary Celebration, hosted in Bahrain in the Middle East. He wrote a tribute poem to the late music legend, Mandoza, which was read live at Mandoza’s funeral by the then Deputy Minister of Arts and Culture, Rejoice Mabudafhasi, in 2016.

Mainganya has also performed at Macufe, one of the biggest cultural festivals in the country in Bloemfontein, sharing a stage with legends such as Gcina Mhlophe. He has also been featured in a number of music videos, including the topof-the-charts hit Oe batla kae music video of Deejay Ganyani Entertainment.

The price of the fruit depends on size, with the smallest fruit sold at R2 and the biggest at R10. Hlongwane also sells in bulk to local people who make baobab juice and ice cream.

Business for Hlongwane is good as he sells the fruit all year round. “I collect as many fruit as possible and store them at home. The baobab fruit can be kept for up to three years, as long as the place is free from moisture and ants. Because of the huge demand for indigenous food, I have added mopane worms and other dried indigenous vegetables, which I now also sell at my stall.”

He says that people should not feel ashamed to start their own small businesses. “To some, my business might not look like a serious initiative, but it puts food on the table for my family to eat. We must declare war against poverty by creating our own jobs. Every cent counts in these tough economic times,” he said.

Tshindane is back with another book

After publishing his third book of poetry about four months ago, this resident of Lutomboni village in the Nzhelele Valley has published his fourth book, titled Hone hu tshi tea u maliwa nga vhugai. Whereas his previous book contained poems, the latest one is a novel.

Tshindane was born at Thononda village, some 59 years ago. He completed his school education at Khakhu High School and then went to Makhado College of Education, where he did his secondary teachers’ diploma. During his time as a student Tshindane started to explore his writing talent. He wrote a number of poems and songs in his spare time.

A few years later, Tshindane published his debut poetry book, Na rine ri vhathu. This was fol-

lowed with another book of poetry, Ndi mushumo une kha lino ndi khou lilesa.

His third book of poetry, Nndwa I tshe khulu, was published in February this year. The title can be loosely translated to mean “the struggle is still far from over”, and the book contains 50 poems.

by Vhakololo Press. In the book, Tshindane tries to address the confusion many people face as a result of their failure to draw a line between traditional and western marriages. Tshindane tries to address problems such as parents who demand exorbitant fees for lobola from the grooms-to-be, as if they are selling their daughters.

The young author, born at Tshaulu, today holds a bachelors’ degree in urban and region-

al planning, but her journey to obtaining her degree had not been an easy one. In her book, she lets the reader in on how her expectations about university life turned into a series of traumatic experiences, and how she overcame them.

The book gives parents a glimpse of what some students get subjected to as it addresses the issue of gender-based violence at higher-learning institutions.

It identifies the different types of abuse, causes, and measures that can be taken to avoid it.

“I used to write short stories and my friends had always been impressed with my

writing ability. I only really took it seriously when I started writing Pfuramathupo. I went through many experiences and wanted to share them with others. The moral of the story is that whatever difficult situation we go through in life eventually comes to an end,” she said.

Netshivhulana encourages other young people to utilise their talents to motivate their communities. “It is important to use our skills while we are still young, because that could be the foundation of our future. Mine is an inborn talent, but my success is coupled with hard work and a positive attitude. I also want to prove the fact that success does not depend on whether you come from a disadvantaged rural area, like my own, but on your ability to use the limited resources at your disposal profitably.”

The Motsepe Foundation has, over many years, established development and upliftment partnerships and run projects with members of royal families and traditional leaders from rural and traditional communities throughout South Africa.

The focus is on farmers who struggle to secure capital to support their operations. The foundation has extended loans to the value of R70 million to two farming projects in Limpopo and Mpumalanga. The focus of these upliftment and development projects is to benefit the inhabitants and residents from the respective traditional and rural communities under the leadership of the kings, queens and traditional leaders.

Dr Patrice Motsepe, the man behind the foundation, said that part of the R70 million that had been made available was to ensure that a culture was built where white farmers, communities and traditional leaders joined hands in working together.

He said that the need to assist and enable royal households and traditional leaders to become financially self-supporting and sustainable had also been recognised in the meetings with the Motsepe Foundation. The agricultural and farming projects with AgriSA and other white farmers had been identified as viable and sustainable ventures for the development and upliftment of traditional communities.

This former human resource manager opened her first funeral home in 2004 in Mpumalanga. Ms Mafo is considered to be a pioneer for women in a traditionally male-dominated industry. Masakona CPA slowly reaping the rewards from their partnership with Vumelana

By Bernard Chiguvare The Masakona Communal Property Association (CPA) says that the partnership with Vumelana Advisory Fund is finally starting to bear fruit as the farm switches into productive gear.

The Masakona CPA represents one of the Luvuvhu River Valley communities who were forcibly removed by the then Apartheid government between 1920 and 1930. They were relocated about 50km from their original settlement.

In 2005, the Masakona community

successfully reclaimed 860 ha of land, valued at R47.8 million. Some 270 ha of the reclaimed land is being leased under title deeds, with 189 ha that have been developed.

Today, the CPA is engaged in banana and avocado farming. With the necessary expertise, they are even prepared to go into macadamia farming.

Between 2005 and 2017, the CPA entered into a partnership with SAFM and Sharp Move Trading 150 (Pty) Ltd, but this was a short-lived marriage.

Move Trading 150 (Pty) reached a point of seeking private investment. Consultations with the Limpopo Department of Agriculture resulted in the CPA’s being referred to the Vumelana Advisory Fund for possible assistance.

Vumelana Advisory Fund is a non-profit organization that helps communities in land-reform programmes to develop their land by funding advisory services to structure commercially viable partnerships between CPAs and investors that create jobs, income and skills.

In 2019, through the professional expertise of Vumelana, LEFT Futures (PTY) Ltd was selected as the transaction advisory firm, and in December that same year, the Masakona Agricultural Development Project commenced.

The CPA’s members say that they could not be happier with this partnership with Vumelana Advisory Fund as they are now making real progress towards running a productive CPA. “For the moment, we are concentrating on banana farming until we are able to get assistance to get to full-blown production. Although we do not have a very strong market for the bananas at the moment, we believe that the introduction of the Vumelana Advisory Fund into the CPA will take us to another level,” said Amelia Mukwevho, deputy chairperson of the CPA. They have 17 employees working on the farms at the moment.

Tribute to soccer star KK Mawela Nengovhela

By Elmon Tshikhudo Hardly a month since the passing of the former soccer star Kanakana Alfred Mawela Nengovhela, his absence is still felt greatly as people remember the mark he left within his community.

The 64-year-old from Itsani Tshisahulu, fondly known as KK, passed away on 25 May. In commemorating Youth Month on 18 June this year, the community hosted the first annual KK Mawela soccer tournament at the Matieni Soccer Grounds, where four teams participated.

In the first game, Pombolosi FC beat Singo Tsha Fhasi 5-1. In the second game, Maguluvheni FC walloped Gwamasenga FC 4-1 to reach the final.

Maguluvheni won the tournament by beating Pombolosi 3-1.

One of the organisers and a civic leader, Mr Michael Gumula, said the late Mawela Nengovhela had inspired the youth in the area through his passion for soccer. “He did a lot in

taking the youth from the streets, and through his encouragement, the soccer ground is now always full when games are being played. He was a blessing to this community, and we felt that there was no better way to console his family than honouring him this Youth Month.

This is just the start. We have big plans for the future, where we will invite soccer coaches and club owners from professional ranks to come and watch the boys play,” he said.

The late soccer star’s older brother, Mr George Mawela, said the family was humbled by the gesture. “We have not yet overcome our grief over his death, but this has soothed our souls and eased our pain. We did not know that this community cared this much, and we wholeheartedly thank the community and organisers for making this day possible and honouring us in this fashion,” he said.

KK loved soccer and lived his life trying to impart his skills onto the youth in his community. He played for Dzindi United Brothers FC. Dubs, as the club was known then, was one of the best soccer teams in the Thohoyandou area in the 70s.

When he retired as a soccer player,

he saw that as an opportunity to plough back into his community by coaching the local Itsani FC team part time.

He also contributed to the team by transporting them to away games free of charge.

Chipfuyo turns other people’s trash into a way to earn an honest living

By Bernard Chiguvare It’s midday on Friday, 4 June. Tawanda Chipfuyo sits on two bricks while crushing empty soda cans for recycling before he trolleys the recyclables to a scrapyard some kilometres from Louis Trichardt’s central business district (CBD).

The skip bin area near Shoprite, in the Louis Trichardt CBD, is the place where he usually keeps his collection of recyclables before taking it to his home for storage. He also scavenges through garbage bins for empty beer bottles to sell.

This is how 51-year-old Chipfuyo from Zimbabwe has been earning a living since 2002.

During the cold winter season, though, business is very slow compared to summer. “Most people prefer to drink coffee or tea in the wintertime, instead of cold drinks, and as a result, my business drops,” he said.

In the summer he needs a week to collect 120kg of empty soda cans, whereas, in the winter, this takes considerably longer.

“I wake up every morning at around 05:00 and start to collect empty beer bottles and cans at two nightclubs in town. Fortunately, I was offered a room at one of the nightclubs, so that I regularly clean the surrounding area. This makes it easier for me to collect the recyclables quickly before anyone else gets to them,” said Chipfuyo.

When asked how he had ended up in South Africa, Chipfuyo replied: “Back home I struggled to make ends meet. My parents died while I was still young. I dropped out of school when I was in the seventh grade. No-one was prepared to pay for my education, so, in 1991 I decided to follow my brother, who was already in the coun-

One day, in 2002, he walked to Louis Trichardt’s dumping area in the hope that someone might pick him up for a job, but that never happened. Instead, he came up with the idea to start his own recycling business.

Although Chipfuyo has been in the country for a long time now, he often travels back home to visit his family. The recycling business, to him, is an honest way of living. “I want to encourage the Zimbabwean youth to look out for honest job opportunities in South Africa and desist from criminal activities,” he said.

Chipfuyo is saving up for when he returns to Zimbabwe for good someday. “I am sure that, in three years’ time, I should be on my way back to my home country again. Residents from this area have fallen victim to a series of burglaries over the past few months, where stealing TV sets and food during the night seems to be the goal. They suspect a crime syndicate at work and blame the police for not doing enough to apprehend anyone in connection with these thefts.

A member of the local community policing forum (CPF), Mr William Rambau, said that the community members were fed-up with crime and wanted to put a message across to the justice system: “We are tired of the anarchy caused by thugs. We are here to make a statement to the authorities that they should not even consider giving bail to the suspects who get arrested.

Thugs have been terrorising us for a long time, and each time they get caught and are released, they come back again.”

He said that the thugs had graduated into serious criminals who now armed themselves with dangerous weapons. “We are no longer safe in this community, and if they are granted bail, they must just know that they will not be welcome in this village. They have to go somewhere else as we cannot guarantee their safety here,” he said.

According to the residents, the thieves usually enter people’s yards between midnight and 03:00 in the morning. The loot then gets stashed either in a dark corner of the yard or taken with them.

One of the residents, who wants to remain anonymous, claimed that this gang of criminals consisted of young boys from their own communities. He said that thugs targeted houses by climbing through the burglar bars and stealing TV sets and other items during the night.

The senior traditional leader, Thovhele Vho-Malinavho Masakona, urged everyone to be united in the fight against crime. “All we want is a crime-free village where one can sleep soundly with open gates, without fearing that we might get attacked by thugs. We urge all residents to notify their neighbours if they are away from home. Very soon, we will be launching a street watch to secure our village.” He said that the community had agreed that no one would be allowed to walk around in the streets from 22:00 at night without valid reason.

The tournament was staged to honour one of the local residents, Mr Azwinndini Bryce Madala.

Madala is a former player and head coach of Gwamasenga Dangerous Tigers FC. During the ceremony, he was presented with two big trophies, a certificate, a gold medal and cash. When responding, Madala said that he was humbled to be honoured in such a way.

According to one of the organisers, Mr Emmanuel Muofhe, the tournament will become an annual event. A local insurance broker, Marara Risk Solutions, was the main sponsor of the tournament.

Stone Breakers are new champions

By Kaizer Nengovhela Tshikhwani Stone Breakers were by far too strong for Hollywoodbets Mabaleng FC when they overpowered them 4-1 in their final match in the Musona Soccer Tournament that was played at the Madombidzha Grounds on Friday.

The game was a one-sided affair from the onset, with Stone Breakers dictating terms.

Nobody was surprised when the local lads took the lead in the ninth minute. Their diminutive striker, Tshanduko Phungo, was on target after receiving a neat pass from Ndungelo Tshingwala.

Mabaleng lost cohesion in the middle of the park shortly after Breakers’ first goal. They were severely punished for that. Breakers pressed hard in search of more goals. Marubini Mushukwa scored from a free kick to make the tally 2-0.

They only goal of Mabaleng was scored by Phindulo Mabasa shortly before the end of the first stanza.

In the second half, Mabaleng gained some momentum, but their efforts paid no dividends as the defence of Breakers was rock solid. Aluwani Nedzamba came close to scoring when he unleashed a balloon shot that missed the pole by an inch.

Breakers initiated some promising moves from behind.

Khetho Tahula was on target in

the 78th minute after receiving a beautiful pass from Livhuwani Masindi. He also caused an upset later in the game when he fumbled at the goal line, with the keeper already beaten.

The fourth goal of Breakers belonged to Tshanduko Phungo, whose long-range ground cutter left the United

keeper, Thabelo Nemutamvuni, flat-footed.

Tshikhwani Stone Breakers went home with R10 000, a floating trophy, a soccer kit and gold medals. The runners-up, Mabaleng, collected R4 000, a soccer kit and silver medals.

By Frank Mavhungu Thohoyandou FC are still in joyous mood after beating Mbaleni FC 3-0 in their Thulamela Local Football Association League match that was played at the Thohoyandou P-East Grounds on Sunday.

The game started at a slow pace as the teams seemed to be studying each other. The

intensity of the game gradually increased towards the middle of the first half.

The visitors from Mbaleni village lost cohesion as the game progressed. The home side capitalised on the setback and opened their account in the 34th minute. They were awarded a free kick just outside the box after their centre forward, Fhulufhelo Ratshibvumo, was

tackled the rough way. Rambani Masindi beat the keeper with a half volley from the free kick.

Thohoyandou enjoyed their 1-0 lead until proceedings for the first half came to an end.

As if they were leading, Mbaleni started to play defensive football in the last half.

Realising that they had nothing to fear, Thohoyandou decided to add the number of players on the attack and defended with only two players.

Thohoyandou’s bulldozer midfielder, Gudani Mukhwantheli, was unfortunate in the 68th minute. He shot wide from inside the box with the keeper already beaten.

Thohoyandou increased the margin in the 76th minute when Fhulufhelo Ratshibvumo beat the keeper with a ground cutter from the 25-metre area. They put matters beyond doubt with a late goal that came via Rendani Mnete. He beat the offside trap and sent the keeper the wrong way.

This year’s champions will take home R5 000, a floating trophy, soccer kit, gold medals, 15 pairs of soccer boots and two soccer balls. The runners-up will receive soccer kit, R3 000, 15 pairs of soccer boots, silver medals and two soccer balls.

The team finishing in third place will be presented with R1 500, a soccer kit and

two soccer balls. A soccer kit, two soccer balls and cash amounting to R750 are awaiting the team that will finish in the fourth position.

Teams that will be booted out of the tournament in the quarterfinal round will each receive two soccer balls, while the remaining teams will each receive a consolation prize of one soccer ball.

The opening matches for the annual Masawe Tournament will be played at the Vhufuli Goldville Grounds next Monday (27th).

The tournament was officially launched during a ceremony held at the Masawe Car Wash in Tshitereke last Sunday. Fourteen teams from Vhufuli and the surrounding areas will take part in the tournament.

Musina launches new sports development programme to assist struggling teams Musina News The launch of the Musina Sports Development Programme is regarded as a giant step towards empowering struggling sport teams. The opening ceremony was held at Musina’s municipal offices on Wednesday, 15 June, where Musina Mayor Nkhanedzeni Godfrey Mawela and Hope Diamond Transport did the honours.

Ten new soccer kits to the value of R50 000 were handed over during the event and will be distributed to deserving struggling soccer teams across the Musina Municipality.

Diamond Transport, Mr Pfuluwani Tshilande, said that his company had a social responsibility to plough back into the communities. Over the years, Hope Diamond Transport has been running various sporting tournaments around Musina, and Tshilande feels that they need to continue their contribution towards developing sport in the area. “There would be no point for us to run our business here if we cannot contribute to the well-being of the local communities,” he said.

Tshilande said that the soccer kits were only the start of the sports programme while they prepared for the rollout of more sporting equipment.

“We know that we have various sporting activities both in urban and rural

parts of Musina, and we have previously contributed to many different sporting codes. We are now working on the logistics for a big mayoral tournament with massive prizes next year.”

Mayor Mawela said the partnership between the Musina Municipality and Hope Diamond Transport would assist sports development. “These ten soccer kits unveiled here today will mean a lot to struggling soccer teams around our municipality. We have many good soccer players around Musina, but it is painful to see them struggling to access basic needs like soccer kits. We are happy that, today, we are starting a new chapter in the development of sports in the Musina Municipality,” he said.

Maindis Ladies’ coach, Sipho Mabuza, aims high

By Frank Mavhungu The head coach of Maindis Ladies Football Club, Mr Sipho Mabuza, is optimistic that his team will finish their league programme among the top four teams on the log standings.

During an interview with him shortly after his team’s 1-0 victory over Durban Ladies at the Giyani Stadium two weeks ago, Mr Mabuza described the win as a step in the right direction.

Mr Mabuza, who took over from Ms Rhulani Mathebula at the beginning of this season, said that he was given a clear mandate when he accepted the coaching offer from the club at the beginning of the season. He said that his mandate was to ensure that the Giyani side finished their league programme among the top four teams on the log standings.

Mabuza said that his mandate was achievable if the team’s current performance was anything to go by. Maindis are currently lying in the fifth position on the log standings with 20 points accumulated from 11 matches.

Asked about the secret behind

the team’s success, Mr Mabuza said that his first assignment when he took over the coaching job was to work on the physical and mental fitness of the players. He said that the technical staff needed few weeks to get the players in the right frame of mind.

Mabuza said that they had given the players seven days to rest after the game against Durban Ladies. Maindis’ next fixture will be against City Ladies FC, with whom they will lock horns at the Tsakane Stadium in Johannesburg on Saturday, 25 June.

Magesi join five Limpopo teams in GladAfrica league

Magesi FC will be campaigning in the GladAfrica Championship League when activities for the new season start in about two months’ time. This follows the team’s superb performance in the national playoffs at the Olën Park Stadium in Potchefstroom last week.

Magesi competed in the group stages with Spear of the Nation FC from the Eastern Cape and Real Madrid from the Northern Cape. Their opening match was against Real Madrid, whom they brutally walloped 3-1 on Tuesday.

Magesi completed their group-stage programme at the top of their group after playing to a 2-2 draw with Spear of the Nation in their second match. Their semi-final match was against University of the

Northwest FC, whom they beat 2-1 on Thursday to secure a place in the final.

The Polokwane side played against MM Platinum FC from Gauteng in the final on Sunday afternoon. Their only goal, which came towards the end of the game, was enough to make MM Platinum the ABC Motsepe League national champions. MM Platinum were presented with a cheque to the value of R1,25 million and a floating trophy shortly after the final game. Magesi FC received R600 000 for their efforts.

Magesi, together with MM Platinum, have been promoted to the GladAfrica Championship League, following their outstanding performance in the tournament. Magesi will be the sixth club in the GladAfrica Championship League from the Limpopo Province.

There were four clubs from Limpopo, namely Black Leopards, Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila, Venda Football Academy and Polokwane City in the GladAfrica Championship League last season.

Baroka FC, who were campaigning in the DStv Premiership Division last season, had failed to make the grade as they were relegated to the lower division after they had finished their league programme at the bottom of the log.

Magesi FC will not be campaigning in the GladAfrica Championship League for the first time. They were promoted in the same manner at the end of the 2014/15 soccer season.

Unfortunately, they could not maintain their franchise for more than one season as the team was relegated to the ABC Motsepe League at the end of the 2016/17 soccer season.

More than R200 000 in prize money was distributed to the various netball, ladies soccer and U/17 soccer teams that participated in the Thovhele Vho-NTL Mashamba youth tournament that ended on Sunday at the Mashamba Grounds.

The administrator of the Makhado Local Football Association, Mr Simon Mashele, said that the players had trained hard to excel in their activities. He praised the committee who managed the tournament and encouraged community members to keep producing soccer stars.

Mashele thanked Singo Mining for helping to develop soccer in the rural areas, especially among the youth. “Despite the difficult economic conditions, we still find companies that are prepared to share their takings and support us,” he said.

A director of Singo Mining, Mr Robert Nesengani, praised the team managers and players for their dedication and commitment during the matches. He stated that they would continue sponsoring the tournament, saying it formed part of their mission. “As a company, it is our obligation to ensure that the society in which we are living is healthy, and sponsoring football is a step in the right direction,” he added.

The winners in the U/17 soccer section, Masakona Bayern, went home with R30 000, two soccer kits, a floating trophy and gold medals.

The runners-up, Dream Boys, collected R15 000, two soccer kits and silver medals.

The netball champions, Lufule A, collected R11 000, gold medals, two netball kits and a floating trophy. The team that ended in second position, Dynamite, banked R6 000

and received two netball kits and medals. The ladies soccer champions, Makulana Green Dreams, received R11 000, two soccer kits,
