VDM councillor accused of illegally connecting water
By Kaizer Nengovhela
A senior councillor of the Vhembe District Municipality (VDM), the authority responsible for providing water to
the Vhembe region, is being accused of illegally connecting water to his own business premises at Mhinga village.
Cllr Miyelani Chauke, a member of the VDM’s mayoral committee, now has to fend off allegations that he is benefiting from free water, at the expense of many other residents. In response, he described the allegations as a political attack, aimed at thwarting his chances to become deputy-secretary of the ANC in Vhembe.
Residents of Mhinga, Boxahuku, Mayitane and Maphophe villages claim that they have not had water for a year now, since their water supply was inexplicably cut off last year. They blame the situation on Cllr Chauke, saying that he had tampered with the main pipeline and illegally made a connection to his carwash business.
One of the residents, Mr Tinyiko Magaisa,
wrote to the VDM’s mayor, Dowelani Nenguda, last week, asking him to intervene and act against his committee member. In the letter, he states that the issue was raised with the Collins Chabane municipality as well, but no response has been received.
In an interview earlier this week, Magaisa said that the local community had been without water for some time now. “We reported this case of illegal water connection to the Vhembe District Municipality, but it seems they are afraid to come out to disconnect it, because the guilty person is a councillor. This unprofessional manner in which government officials act really amazes us. So, we decided that enough is enough and informed the district municipality that we were going to cut off all illegal connections ourselves,” Magaisa said.
One of the residents at Boxahuku also reckoned that this kind of behaviour by a government official was unacceptable.
“We need the Vhembe District to take action against [Chauke] because he denied the whole community access to water,” he said.
Cllr Chauke is currently also contesting for the position of deputy secretary for the ANC in Vhembe, following the murder of the previous deputy secretary and Collins Chabane Mayor Moses Maluleke last year. Chauke is up against the current mayor of the Collins Chabane Municipality, Shadrack Maluleke, with the conference to be held in June.
In response to our media enquiry, Chauke said he had paid the VDM more than R6 000 to connect water to his business premises. When he was asked whether he received regular accounts from the municipality for water consumed, he said no.
Chauke said that the allegations formed part
of a political agenda against him, because he was contesting for the position of deputy secretary. He added that he had since disconnected the water connection that people were complaining about.
The spokesperson for the VDM, Mr Matodzi Ralushai, said no-one was allowed to make illegal connections - not
even their officials. “Vhembe District Municipality’s mandate will be realised when communities start to take care of water infrastructure. Constant vandalism and illegal connections affect water provision to our communities. If all stakeholders act responsibly, water challenges will be minimised,” he said.

Sabatharian Church ask for help to finish the roof on their new building
By Victor Mukwevho
The Sabatharian Church, situated in Tshiseluselu village in the Vhembe District, is pleading with members of the community to open their hearts and help them with donations, so that they can build a roof for their newly built church.
According to one of the church’s elders, Vhaingameli Vho-Samuel Khavhadi, the members of the church had spent every cent they had received from tithes on building the church for years, but they were just not able to afford a roof to finish their church.
He said many of the church members had lost their jobs as companies were forced to close their doors because of load shedding and
Monday’s total shutdown was a huge success, reckons Vhembe
By Victor Mukwevho
The chairperson of the EFF in the Vhembe District, Advocate TP Matodzi, described Monday’s national shutdown as peaceful and a big success.
Speaking to the EFF members after their march on Monday, he thanked them for keeping things peaceful and avoiding provocations with law-enforcement agencies. “The masses of our people heeded our call and stayed at home today. Most shops did not open their doors and when we marched to the malls, the
EFF
police and the army closed the gates. We are still demanding that the government should stop load shedding and the president of the country should resign as he is failing this country,” Matodzi said.
In the afternoon, the EFF marched towards Thavhani Mall, past Mvusuludzo Mall, through the CBD, towards the University of Venda, where the leadership addressed its members before dispersing.
When Matodzi was asked whether he felt that the party had achieved its objectives with the shutdown in Thohoyandou, he replied that they had. “Tho-
hoyandou was like a ghost town today. Only a very few hawkers opened their stalls,” he said.
On the question of marches being dominated by young people, with very few adults participating, he said this was not surprising as the student leadership at Univen and the Vhembe TVET College’s Makwarela Campus were run by EFF Student Command. “We are in control of the youth formations in the Vhembe District, and this confirms why we are growing at a very fast pace here. This is a party for future generations,” he concluded.

New traditional leader of Ha-Sidou village installed
By Silas Nduvheni
For almost nine years, the rural village of Ha-Sidou near Mangondi and Jim Kone villages functioned without a traditional leader to rule and lead the communities. That is why, when the new traditional leader, Vhamusanda Nthuseni Sithali finally took his seat on the throne on Saturday, 18 March, he was received joyfully by the communities.
Vhamusanda Sithali succeeded his late father, Vhamusanda Nngwedzeni Sithali, who passed away in 2015. The village had since been ruled by an acting traditional leader, while the communities were constantly worried about whom they were supposed to report their

In turn, Mphaphuli also urged the people from Ha-Sidou village to show respect to their new leader and assist him with the smooth running of the village and initiating some new developmental projects.
The Vhembe District’s commissioner of traditional affairs for the Limpopo Department of Co-Operative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGSTA), Mr Mmbulaheni Mamidza, presented the certificate of recognition that declares Nthuseni Sithali the rightful person to the throne and to

Missing woman’s decomposed body found near Matshavhawe
By Kaizer Nengovhela
The decomposed body of a 34-year-old woman was found in the bushes near Matshavhawe village last Thursday (16th). The victim was identified as Ms Brenda Mulaudzi, who had been missing since 2 February this year.
Ms Mulaudzi was last seen with her boyfriend, and her family had been looking for her for over a month before her body was discovered by residents who were collecting firewood in the nearby bushes.
“We don’t want the media in court,” demand SAMWU murder accused
By Silas Nduvheni
Chaos erupted in the Limpopo High Court in Thohoyandou on Monday, 20 March, as the trial of the Radzuma brothers, who stand accused of the murder of the two slain SAMWU officials from the Vhembe District Municipality (VDM), finally started.
Ronald Mani (50) and Timpson Musetsho (50) were gunned down in February 2019 for allegedly being too vocal about the illegal investments made by the municipality in the now liquidated VBS Mutual Bank.
Limpopo High Court Judge AML Phathudi explained to the three accused, Simon, Percy and Ndivhuwo Radzuma, that Court B was filled to capacity by members of the community, relatives of the deceased and various media representatives as the matter was of public
interest. This caused a delay in the proceedings.
Judge Phathudi asked the accused about their legal representation and all three replied that they needed the support of Legal Aid South Africa. Their next appearance was postponed to 29 May, to allow the accused to appoint their lawyers. The three were remanded in custody.
Simon Radzuma (accused number 1) raised a point of order and told the court that they wanted the media representatives to excuse themselves from the case, accusing them (media) of being biased when reporting on their case.
In response to Simon’s request, Judge Phathudi answered: “These media representatives who are here to cover the court proceedings, have applied to be here and are doing their jobs. So, if you don’t want them to cover the case, you too have to apply for it.”
Mr Hulisani Mani, who represented both the Musetsho and Mani families, strongly criticised the accused for slashing the media, who only act as mouthpieces of the communities. “We need the media coverage, so that those who cannot attend the court proceedings can stay informed on what is happening. You (accused) must tell us who the kingpins behind the murder of our beloved relatives are, instead of blaming the media, who are only doing their job.”
Mani said they were praying day and night that, eventually, those who had paid the killers would finally be arrested.
Meanwhile, the Radzuma brothers’ co-accused, Thabo Sibanze, appeared in the Sibasa Regional Court on 13 February on charges of intimidation and of being in the country illegally. His case was postponed to 2 May.
Robbers bomb the ATM at Maebane petrol station and rob store of cash
By Kaizer Nengovhela
Thugs once again took advantage of load shedding last weekend when they bombed an ATM at the Maebane petrol station in the Kutama area and robbed the garage shop of an undisclosed amount of cash.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Saturday, 18 March. Fortunately, the robbers could not open the safe inside the ATM and fled with only the money they took from the shop.
Police spokesperson Brig Motlafela Mojapelo confirmed the incident. A case of malicious damage to property using explosives and business robbery has been opened while the investigation continues.
The destruction of the ATM, which was only installed in 2019, has left residents not only stranded, but highly frustrated as they once again have to travel all the way to Louis Trichardt to withdraw cash or do other bank transactions.
One of the residents, who asked to remain anonymous, said he had heard the booming sound of the ATM being blown up in the early the hours. “It was so loud that it woke me up
immediately. A few minutes later, I heard a vehicle speeding off. I thought it might be some of the local boys, who sometimes play with their guns and cars. I was surprised and very upset when I learnt that the ATM had been bombed. If the ATM is not fixed urgently, it will have a negative effect on our lives because we use it on a daily basis. Bringing ATMs to a remote rural area like Kutama was a relief for the community members, who had to travel far to have access to banking services. Now criminals are bombing the ATMs. Thugs like these deserve to be put behind bars, where they belong,” he said. The police appealed to anyone who might have
The police spokesperson, Brig Motlafela Mojapelo, said that they had been alerted by members of the community, who had discovered Mulaudzi’s decomposed body in the bushes. “When members of our police team arrived at the scene, the body was lying on the ground and a plastic bag with clothes was found next to it,” he said.
The results of the post-mortem and DNA tests were not yet available at the time of our going to press. Mojapelo said that Mulaudzi’s boyfriend had been brought in for questioning but was later released. Their investigations are continuing.
The local community are accusing the police of not doing enough, even after they were given leads and the
name of the suspect in the case.
The brother of the deceased, Mr Mashudu Mulaudzi, said the family had received a call last Thursday (16th) from one of the community members, who told them of the body that had been found in the bushes. “We went there and what we saw was shocking and heart-breaking. My sister’s body was lying there. We recognised her by her clothes, even though her body was decomposed. My sister had been missing for a month and half, and we were still trying to figure out what could have happened to her when we received the bad news. We contacted her friends, but no-one had seen her, and that was when we decided to report her as missing.”
He said the information they had received regarding his sister’s death was that she had been killed and that “her body was discarded in the bushes like a dead dog. All we want is to see that justice is served and that those involved are brought to book. We want them to explain to us why they killed her like that. That will give us closure and a bit of
acceptance to let go”.
He added that his sister’s death had brought a lot of misery to the family as they were now preparing for a funeral they had not planned on holding. “We are not happy that no arrests have been made so far. We gave the police the name of the suspect and, had they listened to us, all this mess would not have happened. Now we are still waiting for the DNA and post-mortem results before we can bury her,” he said.
information about the incident that can assist them with the investigation to call them on the Crime Stop number 08600 10111 or the MySaps App. “Callers can remain anonymous. All information received will be treated as strictly confidential,” said Brig Mojapelo.

EFF’s shutdown caused more misery for hawkers
By Victor Mukwevho
Many hawkers in the Thohoyandou CBD refrained from opening their stalls for business on Monday, 20 March, because of the national shutdown called for by the EFF.
When the South African National Defence Force and security companies were roped in to help the police maintain law and order during the strike, most community members feared that a dreadful confrontation between these security clusters and the EFF might ensue. Even though some of the big shops did open for business on Monday morning, very few customers dared to leave the safety of their homes to do their usual shopping, leaving Thohoyandou town unusually quiet.
From as early as 06:00 on Monday morning, law-enforcement agencies followed EFF members around town, whenever they gathered to march. They were ac-
Unrest at Tshianane Secondary in support of current acting principal
By Maanda Bele
Classes resumed as normal for the learners at Tshianane Secondary School in Ha-Musekwa village on Monday, 13 March, after angry school-governing body (SGB) members, parents and pupils had gone on a twoday strike on Thursday and Friday, 9 and 10 March. The protesters demanded that the Department of Education in Vhembe appoint the current acting principal, Mr Raphalalani Ralson Ranenyeni, as permanent principal with immediate effect.
Protesters blocked the D3671 road, which is the only access road to Ha-Musekwa, Makushu, Ngudu, Sane, Dolidoli, Maranikhwe, Mudimela and many other surrounding villages. The closure of the road disturbed learning at several nearby schools, including Tshakhande Primary, Kharivhe Primary, Ramabulana Secondary, Mufongodi Primary, Sane
Primary, Mangwele Primary, Musekwa Primary, and Mapani Primary School.
According to the chairperson of the SGB, Mr Danny Setelela, the parents, SGB and learners are happy with Ranenyeni’s performance, and they want him to be appointed in a permanent position. Ranenyeni took over the reins on 1 September 2022.
“In less than six months, we managed to produce 17 bachelor passes and quality results, and we are confident in him. Under his leadership, he introduced a study camp and financial support for learners who need it from his own pocket. Therefore, he must be appointed urgently, since his leadership skills are required. We believe he will take our school to greater heights.”
Setelela said they had partnered with the National SGB Association to solve the problem. He also expressed their concern about the alleged involvement of the district
administrator and some teachers in corrupt activities.
“We are deeply concerned that they are trying to interfere with the director’s responsibilities,” Setelela said.
Some of the parents who supported the protest said they wanted a principal who cared about their children’s education. “We want someone who knows the school and will put our children’s education first. We have seen how Ranenyeni works, and we are very happy with what he has been doing,” said Mr Azwindini Mudau.
Mike Maringa, spokesman for the Limpopo Department of Basic Education, said the department was aware of the disruptions at the school. “Like any other position, we will advertise, shortlist, interview and appoint a principal. There are no other unusual procedures. We involve the communities to solve the impasse. The school has been without a permanent principal for two years, due to disputes,” Maringa said.
companied from the post office to Mvusuludzo Mall, until they dispersed at a spot next to the Eastgate Mall.
After 09:00, when the day appeared to turn out peaceful after all, more hawkers started flocking into town, but no customers were around to buy their products.
Lutendo Thoboni and Azwimmbavhi Mathegu, who jointly own a makeshift eatery on the eastern side of Thohoyandou, said the strike had cost them a whole day’s profit.
“We sell pap and meat to our customers, but today, there are no customers. I am a mother of two and work very hard to support my family. I don’t know what I will do with all the food we have cooked,” Mathegu said. Thoboni concurred with her co-worker, saying that the government should do everything in its powers to fix load shedding. “Even though I am not a politician, the issue of load shedding is affecting us in a very negative way and has to stop,” she said.
A local business, Tru Tombstones, sponsored the Vhembe side that took part in the Pirates U/21 Cup tournament held at the Marks Park Sport Complex in Gauteng. The Vhembe side were made up of young players from different teams in the Vhembe District. The side performed well and ended in the top 16 teams out of the 64 teams that entered. Mr Wikus Botes (at the back on the left in the photo) from Tru Tombstones said that he had received a request from the team management for assistance and felt compelled to help. He encouraged more businesses to invest in sport. The handing over of the sponsorship took place in Louis Trichardt last Friday, shortly before the team left for Gauteng.
Owner of “bogus” college in court
By Kaizer Nengovhela
Salome Judith Ngwana, who was arrested for allegedly running a bogus nursing college and cheating students pursuing a career in nursing out of thousands of rands, appeared in the Louis Trichardt Magistrate’s Court again on Monday, 20 March.
Ngwana (54) had been on the run since 2017, after some of the students reported her schemes to the police and it came to light that the college was not even registered with the Department of Higher Education. She was arrested on 10 March this year, after detectives from the Makhado SAPS received information that she would be returning to South
Africa from Nigeria, where she had been in hiding, via the OR Tambo International Airport.
Ngwana is facing charges
of fraud and theft under false pretences. The case was postponed to 30 March for a bail application.

Accident on N1 claims three lives
By Kaizer Nengovhela
Another accident on the N1, between Louis Trichardt and Musina, claimed the lives of three more people on Friday, 17 March. A truck hit a light motor vehicle, which then collided with a mini-bus taxi at the notorious hairpin curve near the old Ingwe hotel. The truck went off the road and rolled down the mountain. All three of the deceased were apparently passengers in the minibus-taxi. At least 12 people were injured, with their injuries ranging from critical to minor.
The news of the horrific accident spread like wildfire. Within a short space of time, the whole area was swarming with curious onlookers who wanted to get a glimpse of the gruesome accident. The truck was delivering chairs and
plastic dishware, but instead of trying to help the injured passengers, people started looting the chairs and dishware.
The N1 was closed for several hours to allow the police’s forensic unit to document the scene and for rescue and recovery workers to clear the carnage. While rescue workers were franticly trying to assist the injured passengers next to the road, traffic piled up for several kilometres in both directions. The passengers were rushed to the Louis Trichardt Memorial Hospital for treatment. Among them was the truck driver and his two assistants; all three managed to escape with minor injuries.
The driver of the mini-bus taxi, Mr Kennedy Tshatsinde, said he had been heading towards Louis Trichardt at around 08:30 on the morning of the accident. He was driving

behind a car, when an oncoming truck drove into their lane and, while trying to avoid the car, ended up crashing into his taxi from the right. “I was so shocked and scared, but I gathered courage and alighted to have a look at what had happened. It was traumatic to know that lives had been lost and more people had been injured in the taxi that I was driving. I always pray that I never have accidents, as other people’s lives depend on me. I am very saddened that these people died in my taxi, but this was beyond my control,” said Tshatsinde.
The MEC for Transport, Ms Florence Radzilani, sent her sincere condolences to the families who had lost their loved ones in the accident. She was deeply troubled to learn about yet another tragic accident which, she stated, had become a too-frequent occurrence on the region’s roads. She expressed her concern over the fact that fatal accidents are reported nearly every weekend and said that something should be done as a matter of urgency to address the lawlessness on the region’s roads. She said that most of these accidents were caused by reckless drivers and that innocent people became victims. “Our people are dying because of so many road users’ ignorance. One life lost in an accident is one life too many. Road users must, in light of this latest accident, realise what can happen as a result of negligent driving,” she said.
scammed by “Good Samaritan”
By Elmon Tshikhudo Gospel and Tshivenda music artist Pfarelo
Mahandana was left high and dry after being scammed by a “Good Samaritan”.
The singer from Tshidzini, outside Thohoyandou, was over the moon after he appeared in Limpopo Mirror for the first time on 10 March this year with the release of his latest offering, an album called The Best of Pfarelo Mahandana. The album is a collection of hits from his previous albums. In the article, he also appealed to anybody who could help manage his music business to make contact with him.
Soon after the article appeared, calls started pouring in; mostly just to congratulate him on his new album. He became very excited when he received a call that he hoped would change his music career forever, as it came with the promise of a donation of musical instruments. His joy, however, was short-lived as the caller, who identified himself as Mr Maluleke from Giyani, turned out to be nothing but a fraudster.
Instead of receiving the generous donation, Mahandana was left with an outstanding payment for airtime vouchers to the amount of R700 at a local spaza shop.
“On Saturday morning, 11 March, at around 06:30, I received a call from a 015-landline number. This ‘Mr Maluleke’ told me to make out a quotation of my needs. Things started to go awry when he called again and told me that he will transfer R1 200 to a local grocery store, so I can buy groceries and electricity, and that he would later take care of my music needs. I got a local shopkeeper, who gave him her Capitec account detail, and she received a message showing that he had transferred R1 500. His story changed when he told the shop owner that he wanted airtime vouchers for R5 000. But the shop owner had only R700 worth of airtime, which we
sent him. It was after sending the voucher that we realised the bank message was fake. We tried to trace the number he had called from, but it was dead. That was when we realised that we had been scammed.”
Mahandana is now left to settle this debt that was made by the man who scammed him. Fortunately for him, he happens to know the shop owner and they agreed that he could pay the R700 back.
“My advice to others is to be very careful of these scams, where people promise to help you but first want something from you. I have learnt the hard way and do not wish to see others go through what I had experienced,” he said.

Public must participate in governance issues
Musina News
Various stakeholders and members of the public attended the public participation programme of the Municipal Public Accounts Committee (MPAC) on Thursday, 16 March, at different venues. The first session was held at the Malale Community Hall at 10:00, while the second session took place at the Musina Show Grounds at 16:00.
The Speaker of Musina’s municipal council, Siyaphi Evelyn Shirilele, said that for the public to take part in these public-participation programmes was important, for they promoted good governance, transparency, accountability and responsiveness to important community issues. The MPAC’s main duty is to conduct an oversight on how municipal resources are utilised.
During both sessions, Musina’s mayor, Nkhanedzeni Godfrey Mawela, gave a summary in relation to the draft annual report for the 2021/2022 financial year.

News in Tshivenda available on our website
By Denise van Bergen
The more observant readers of the Limpopo Mirror, and especially our online readers, will have noticed a new addition to the website: We are also offering a selection of articles in Tshivenda. Every week, a selection of articles is translated and made available to our readers.
The responsibility to translate the articles rests on the shoulders of our intern, Khathutshelo Prudence Raliphaswa. She started working on 1 March this year and will translate up to a dozen articles every week.
Khathu has an aptitude for languages, with Tshivenda being one of her strongest subjects in school. She has already settled in comfortably with the news team and says she looks forward to gaining first-hand experience through her job as translator and growing in the media industry.
Khathu (25) was born and raised in Elim. She started her schooling at Mulweli Primary. Here her love of
reading and writing short stories and poetry gradually began to develop into what was later to become a deep-rooted passion for her. She matriculated from Ozias Davhana Secondary School in 2016, and in 2018 she enrolled at the Boston College in Polokwane, where she did a short course in media consultancy for a year. Between 2020 and 2022, she studied journalism at the Rosebank College in Pretoria.
The editor of the Limpopo Mirror, Mr Anton van Zyl, says that this initiative to translate news articles from English into the Vhembe region’s indigenous languages is something he had been wanting to bring in as an added service to the readers for many years. He says the idea is to later also do translations into Xitsonga, for the Tsonga-speaking communities who want to stay informed about news happenings in the area.
“This is not a commercial venture and is purely aimed at providing a service to our Tshivenda-speaking readers. Languages are such important parts of
our local communities, and we should all do our bit not only to protect them, but also to help the languages grow,” says Van Zyl. He feels that even though the local vernaculars are widely spoken, not enough such news is available in written format as yet.
were given an opportunity to share their input before the final draft that will be adopted by the council is drawn up.
Mawela said the draft report gave a review of the municipality’s activities on actual performance and further reported on how the integrated development plan and budget were implemented. “This report also describes the work of the municipality in fulfilling its constitutional mandate and in meeting its obligations as dictated by the applicable local government legislation.”
Mawela indicated that, among the achievements for the financial year under review, the municipality had completed various projects, including the Muswodi Community Hall, the Manenzhe Sports Centre and Nancefield’s paved roads. “Some of the projects are overlapping with the current financial year. This includes the construction of a bridge from Tshivhongweni to Tshipale, the development of Mberegeni graveyard, the construction of the Tshikhudini Community Hall and the rehabilitation of the Lesley Manyathela Stadium,” he said.

Fed-up residents of Masakona decide to take ownership of their (poorly maintained) roads
By Kaizer Nengovhela
The residents of Masakona say they have grown tired of the Collins Chabane Municipality’s incompetence and inability to maintain infrastructure in their villages.
After the recent heavy rains, which only worsened the condition of the already dangerously eroded D3927 Road from Mahatlani to Masakona, which they say never got fixed, many residents had been left stranded. This finally prompted them to raise funds, so that they could buy cement and sand and take control of the situation themselves.
Sixteen community members volunteered to fill up the potholes and make the road safer for all to use again. One of the volunteers, Mr Justice Mabudi, said that instead of sitting around and pretending that everything was fine, the community had come up with a turnaround strategy. He said they had started their project to fill up potholes on Monday, 6 March, then stopped to rest on the Saturday and Sunday, and continued again at the start of the next week. According to him, the village has
been a hive of activity, with people from all walks of life coming together to work on the project.
“The residents are under pressure as the Collins Chabane Municipality is failing in its duties. Because residents are not prepared to sit back and watch how their village wanes, they are taking ownership of the problems themselves. This road is usually a very busy road, but since it was damaged by the rains, there has been reduced movement. Other
roads in the district were also damaged. This has affected the availability of key services. We are appealing to developing partners to chip in and help us rehabilitate the D3927 Road,” said Mabudi.
The spokesperson for the Collins Chabane Municipality, Mr Robert Mathe, said that the road was not the municipality’s responsibility. He advised the community to report the condition of the road to Roads Agency Limpopo (RAL).
Bungeni promised a multipurpose sport court
By Thembi Siaga
The Deputy Minister of Sport, Art and Culture, Nocawe Mafu, made a commitment to the residents of Bungeni and nearby areas that her department would construct a multi-purpose sports court in the area. Ms Mafu made this announcement during the multi-sectoral service delivery and social cohesion imbizo programme held at Bungeni stadium on Friday, 17 March.
Hundreds of residents from Bungeni
village and more than 14 sub-villages attended the three-day event organised by the Bungeni Foundation (BGF) from 15 to 17 March. Limpopo’s MEC for Sport, Art, and Culture, Ms Nakedi Kekana, and other dignitaries were among the attendees.
When Deputy Minister Mafu first visited the village in September last year, Hosi Given Bungeni and the local leadership highlighted a need to improve the socio-economic situation of the village and the nearby areas.
Mafu said the multi-purpose sports
court project should have been started already but was delayed because of rain. “The sports court would [accommodate] soccer, netball, volleyball, basketball and tennis. We also want to bring an agriculture project and we are committed to also building a library. We have committed to revamping the chief of the Great Hosi Bungeni’s grave, because when people come here, they should be able to point out where the elders of this area are,” she said. Activities such as xibelani dancers, xiguba tshigombela, and praise poets delighted the crowds during last week’s imbizo.
Mr Collen Mashawana, founder of the Collen Mashawana Foundation, said that he believed sports could play a significant role in learning through discipline. “We are honoured to have been a part of such an important occasion and will continue to look for innovative solutions that can bring positive change for our communities,” he said.
Hosi Bungeni said that for rural villages such as Bungeni, receiving the necessary support from the government, in partnership with other private sectors, was long overdue. “We are excited and grateful because this is a breakthrough. The construction of two houses (for poor families) is also a relief and a blessing for potential recipients, since they previously could not benefit from RDP houses from the Department of Human Settlements,” he said.

Ninja to release new album
By Victor Mukwevho
Ladzani Primary School’s music teacher and wellknown recording artist Thiathu “Ninja” Netshikweta will be releasing his fourth album early next month.
The soft-spoken musician from Ha-Makhuvha village, who is regarded as one of the best lead guitarists in the country today, cut his teeth in
the music industry when he released his debut album Ndo bva Tshirunzi in 2010. The album was well received by music lovers in the country.
“I was surprised by the way people reacted to the album. The support I received from music lovers encouraged me to record my second album, called Muthu wanga wa Africa, two years later,” he said. His third album, Thili Mbi-
lu, was recorded in 2018.
When asked why he took so long to release albums, as he had last recorded an album in 2018, he said he did not just release an album for the sake of money, but it had to contain a message to music lovers in the country.

“As a professional teacher, it is also my duty to educate the nation through music. On my next album, there is also a message to the youth to concentrate more on their education to become educated future leaders,” he said. He concluded by saying that as he also taught art at school, most of his students, including girls, could also play the guitar with aplomb. “I want to leave an incredible impact and a legacy when I am no longer in this world. Apart from recording my music, I would also love to produce more musicians for the future,” he said.

the performing artists. “We have come a long way, and in all the years we have seen tremendous improvement in our music. Local gospel singer Cedrick
Nepile from Tshamulungwi in Buluni recently released his second album, called Ndi Tenda kha ipfi lavho, with 10 spiritually uplifting tracks of worship and praise.
Some of the songs that promise to be instant hits with his fans include Ndi tshi vhona muphulusi, Thank you Jesus, ndo Wana muvhofholi, Murena ndisa mato anga and Ndi a tenda kha ipfi lavho
Nepile started singing as a member of the United Apostolic Faith Church’s choir in 2010. He grew up listening to famous musicians such as Taki Ndou and Rofhiwa Manyaga and drew much inspiration from them. His first album, The same God, was released in 2021.
“This new album shows that I have matured musically and as a person, and I am excited about the change. Since its release, my phone has not stopped ringing. The demand for my first album had been so high that it encouraged me to put in all my efforts to make the next one even better. I sing about personal experiences and what I see happening in my vicinity. I also give advice here and there through my music. Gospel music is very

Upcoming amapiano artist Thuto SA
By Thembi Siaga
Learn “Thuto SA” Mahane, an emerging amapiano artist from Chavani village, reckons he is ready become a part of the conversation in music circles. Thuto SA released his latest single, titled Yi lava wena, earlier this month and it appears to be performing quite well so far.
Yi lava wena, he says, tells a personal story to which his fans may relate. “I was inspired by a past experience where I fell in love, but it did not work out
and I had a hard time to move on,” he said.
Thuto SA started singing and learning to play various instruments such as the piano, bass guitar, acoustic guitar and drums in 2013. “This sparked my interest to explore my musical abilities further at church and turned out to be a success. I developed a deep passion and love for music,” he said.
Thuto SA first became known locally after the release of his single Mdali last year. He has produced many other singles and a 4-track EP, called
Malangavi, which was also released last December. He has worked with up-and-coming artists such as Manotry and Mikzo Soul in the past and is determined to make it big in the world of music. He hopes that his latest track will be the turning point in his music career. “I believe it is high time the public starts taking notice of my work,” he said.
What distinguishes Thuto SA from other artists is his ability to make each song stand out through his easy way of jamming. “I make it a point to
Pottery keeps poverty at bay
By Kaizer Nengovhela
Ms Tshililo Malange, a self-employed potter from Mpheni Block D1 near Elim, enjoys being productive and keeping poverty at bay by making beautifully decorated pots and bowls.
Malange started her
business, called Mosaic Art Works, in 2006, after she had received funding from Luminosa Trust, the company she had previously worked for as a field worker by distributing community public phones to spaza shops.
She explains that she buys traditional clay pots from the local grannies around her community and uses them as moulds to cast her ceramic pots to ensure a strong final product. She also uses other Venda materials.
She buys the mosaic tiles used to decorate her ceramic ware in Pretoria.
“Working with ceramic is not the same as
using clay soil,” she said. She soaks the casting clay in water. When it becomes liquid, she pours it little by little into moulds until the moulds are filled up. She waits about three days for it to dry, then takes it out and places it on the electrical pottery wheel and starts to shape it into form. “When it is shaped, we bake it in the oven at 1100 degrees Celsius. Once baked, we clean it with a dry cloth, and later I decorate it with the mosaic glass according to my desire. I make pots in bright colours or plain,” she said.
Malange believes that her responsibility is to share her good fortune with her community. She often shows youngsters and other women from her community how to make ceramic mosaic pottery. She says that for women to find something that can generate an income for themselves is important. “Now is the time for women to work hard, so that they can reap the fruits,” she said.
Tony Mactony heads for stardom
By Thembi Siaga
His name is Antony Makatu, but in the world of music he is known as Tony Mactony. Besides being an artist, this jack of all trades has previously worked as a journalist and graphic designer, and also made several appearances in TV soaps such as SABC 2’s award-winning drama, Muvhango, SABC 3’s The Estate, and SABC 2’s Giyani Land of Blood
His latest achievement is being cast in the first season of The Black Door, a South African television drama series due to premier on e.tv on 11 April this year. Makatu plays the role of a stern, principled, law-abiding sheriff who does not allow bribes to interfere with his work.
He said he auditioned for the role on 6 March and received a call-back from the agent at Black Brain Pictures the very next day, offering him the role. For Makatu, this accomplishment marks the start of much bigger aspirations in his life.
Although he initially pursued a career in engineering, his passion for the media industry eventually led him to transition into that field. He studied film and television production at the VMC IT and Media Academy in 2021.
During a telephonic interview with Limpopo Mirror, Makatu talked about his flourishing career in television. “I feel great and very blessed with so many doors opening for me now. My journey has not always been easy. It is difficult when you have no connections of already established people in the industry,” he said.
The late Mr Vuledzani Munyai, founder of Vule Media Group, first introduced him to professional acting. “My first role was as a gunman in a film called The Evil of Man, which was produced by Mr Munyai in 2018. It aired on Mzansi Bioskop and Mzansi Magic,” he said.
stay humble and focused, instead of competing. I have high hopes of collaborating with established musicians like Henny C and Tsonga Prince in the near future and in this way gain the exposure I need to really elevate my career,” he said.

Meet Ambrose Ranwashe, Phalaphala FM’s technical producer. He produces dramas for the station and helps the SABC radio stations wherever assistance is needed with outdoor or indoor broadcasts.
Ranwashe was born at Ha-Tshikonelo, but his family later moved to Maniini, where he mainly grew up. He did his primary education at Maniini Primary School and completed his secondary studies at Thivhileli Secondary School in 2005.
He knew he wanted to become a sound engineer while he was in high school, where he would often assist with the setting up of audio equipment for events. This helped him save enough money to purchase his own audio equipment for hire. In 2006, he opted for a sound-engineering course through Sound of Sounds, an audio engineering training and production company in Johannesburg.
Nembidzane publishes his first book
By Maanda Bele
Tshilidzi Nembidzane, a writer from the Sinthumule/Kutama area, published his first book, The Collapse of Political Leadership in South Africa, National and Generational Crisis – a Social Nuclear Bomb, in February this year. The book focuses on the current state of politics in South Africa, with the author sharing his personal views and beliefs.
Nembidzane holds an honours degree in criminal justice and is of the opinion that South Africa finds itself in a leadership crisis.
Nembidzane (25) started writing in 2020 during the national lockdown. “Writing is something that was very far from my mind, but some of my close friends who viewed my WhatsApp statuses often commented on how well I would do if I wrote a book. I laughed it off because I never saw myself as a writer. One night I dreamt I was telling my friend that I will never die until I see my name on the shelves of a bookstore,” he laughed.
He said this book is by far his biggest achievement yet, touching on a sensitive topic that affects everyone. “My goal is to challenge South African citizens and political leaders on leadership. I would appreciate it for a wide audience to know and have a better understanding of what leadership really is. The endless protests that we see every day is a huge indicator of how eroded the leadership’s influence has become. The same modus operandi is being used to neutralise protests; police officers and soldiers are deployed, and that cannot be true leadership. This is what motivated me to write the book,” he said.
To order your copy of his book, contact Nembidzane directly on 071 891 5794 or 072 588
Completing his tertiary studies in 2007, Ambrose was hired at Sound Stylists as a sound engineer. He worked there from 2008 to 2009 and was even a part of the stage engineering team for the tour of The Temptations (of the hit song My Lady Soul) in Sun City. In 2010, he joined the Zoutnet Makoya 7-11 radio station’s team, which had a 07:00 to 11:00 broadcast slot on the Makhado FM frequency. He served as an audio-technical engineer, producing radio imaging and taking care of the studio’s audio equipment.
Between 2013 and 2016, he worked as an audio editor and live sound engineer for UBN Ministries in Johannesburg. This gave him an opportunity to travel around parts of Africa such as Lesotho, Botswana, Namibia, and Swaziland.
He has been with Phalaphala FM since 2017. During the 2021 local government elections held at the Pretoria Show Grounds, he was also among a team of technical operators to assist the 18 SABC radio stations that produced updates on the elections.
“One of my biggest moments was when I helped Radio 2000 do a live broadcasting of the 2022 strategic risk leadership conversations, which were held at Univen. I also had the privilege to be a technical operator during Phalaphala FM’s Qatar World Cup broadcast,” he said.

“Who is the legitimate leader of the Masia clan?”
By Kaizer Nengovhela
The battle to decide who the legitimate leader of the Masia clan is, may move to the courts. Even though the current leader was appointed 16 years ago, a new contender believes that this was a mistake and that the proper customs were not followed. He now wants to approach the court to rectify what he believes was a flawed process.
At the end of December last year, Rolindela Ben Masia, who claims to be the legitimate prince of the Masia Royal Family, wrote a letter to the senior traditional leaders in which he instructs them to rectify the situation.
He claims to be the eldest son of the former senior leader, the late Thovhele Ramauba III and Mrs Tshepo Merriam Masia. When his father died on 29 April 2004, he was still underage. He argues that, instead of appointing a regent to act
as leader until the rightful heir came of age, the royal family decided to appoint his late father’s younger brother as new ruler. In 2007, Mbangiseni Joseph Masia was inducted as the new senior traditional leader.
Rolindela Masia states in his letter to the family that it is customary practice, not only
among the Vhavenda but also among many other African tribes, that a child of the leader succeed him. “It is wrong and against trite customary tradition to appointment a surviving brother as incumbent chief of the throne left vacant by his deceased senior brother when [a] fit and proper heir is available,” he says.
To strengthen his argument, he points out that his father succeeded his grandfather, Thovhele TT (Oubaas) Masia, who in turn was the son of the previous leader, Thovhele Ramauba II (Xipandamaribyi).
“This has been family tradition from time immemorial and for it to be dispensed with on arbitrary and invalid grounds requires or calls for superficial censure,” he says.
According to Mr Goodright Masia, who describes himself as a senior member of the Masia royal family, Rolindela has a legit-
Residents sceptical about reasons
for Thulamela’s clean-up exercise
By Elmon Tshikhudo
For some time now, the Thulamela Municipality has been accused of leaving the towns of Thohoyandou and Sibasa in a state of decay. The two major towns have become a health hazard for hundreds of residents, with practically every surface left littered and stinking.
Local residents are blaming hawkers for creating most of the mess and foul smells as they block the towns’ street drains with dirty water and other rubbish they discard from their makeshift stalls.
Residents have persistently called on the municipality to put its house in order, while the
municipality has argued that the towns are clean; they have a workforce specially appointed for the task. Only when angry residents started collecting garbage around town and dumping it on the municipality’s premises did they seem to realise a problem existed.
Mr Lufuno Madzhie, who works in Thohoyandou, said the town had degenerated considerably over the past few years, to the extent where one could hardly breathe as a result of the stench. “We see these uniformed Thulamela workers, but they just loiter around town doing nothing. The other culprits are hawkers who dump their garbage everywhere and the municipality is doing noth-
ing to curb this. I, for one, commend the residents who took a stand to wake the municipality up from its sleep by dumping garbage on their doorstep. That is the language they understand best,” he said.
For a moment, the wake-up call seemed to have worked.
On Monday, 13 March, the municipality, led by Mayor Sarah Rammbuda, gave in to the pressure of the community and embarked on a clean-up exercise around the town of Thohoyandou. They were joined by other stakeholders, including Univen, led by its principal, Dr Bernard Nthambeleni, and the staff at Vhembe TVET College.
But the residents soon started to doubt the sincerity behind this show of concern for the town’s health and appearance. Some claimed that the clean-up campaign was nothing but damage control and a PR exercise by the municipality. “They just come here wearing their work suits and stand to pose for pictures. We have seen this many times before. We are not at all impressed. They are failing to take control of the towns, and this is not helping us at all,” said another resident.
Mr Simon Madi, the head of waste management in Thulamela, denied that they were being pressured by members of the community. “We have a competent staff that ensures that the town is always clean. The clean-up campaign on Monday was the culmination of a partnership we forged with Univen and Vhembe TVET College in 2022. We were finally launching the partnership where residents of this municipality will benefit in terms of environmental awareness and will put the theory in practice. This will help keep our towns neat all the time,” he said.
imate claim to the leadership position. He explained that Thovhele Ramauba III had had only one wife. When Ramauba died in 2004, he left behind his wife and son, Rolindela Ben Masia.
Goodright Masia believes that the process to appoint a new leader was flawed and he even believes bribery was involved. He said that when the decision had been made to appoint a new leader, not all members of the royal family had been invited to the meeting.
“[At the time] I was surprised when the chairperson of the royal family, Christopher Masia, announced that Mbangiseni was identified as successor to the deceased,” he said. He said that this decision was contrary to the Vhavenda custom that prescribes that a man cannot succeed his own brother as traditional leader. “The womb of a woman cannot bear two traditional leaders,” he said.
As to why they had waited almost 16 years to challenge the appointment of Mbangiseni Joseph Masia as ruler,
Goodright Masia said that at first the young man had been underaged. When he came of age, he tried to resolve the matter internally, by engaging the royal family members. “He believed that the appointment of his uncle was only a temporary measure and that the family would do the right thing by appointing him,” explained Goodright Masia.
“Our family knows who the rightful heir is. I think the truth will soon prevail, and he will take his rightful place. Rolindela is old enough to take his place now,” he said.
In spite of giving the Masia Royal Family only 30 days to respond and address the matter, not much has happened. Goodright Masia said last week that the matter now lay with their lawyers, as they wanted to have the decision to appoint Mbangiseni Joseph Masia as senior leader reviewed.
Questions about the leadership dispute were sent to the Limpopo Department of Co-operative Governance, Human Settlements & Traditional Affairs (CoGHSTA).
After waiting several weeks for
a response, the department’s spokesperson, Tsakani Baloyi, said that strict processes were followed when appointing senior traditional leaders.
“The process starts with the Royal Family meeting,” she said. This is the body tasked with deciding who should ascend to the throne. “Departmental officials are invited to this meeting where the senior traditional leader is selected. The Royal Family will then formally (in writing) inform the department of their decision. The department will then process the request of the Royal Family for recognition of the person submitted. The government only recognises the senior traditional leader after all the processes are followed,” she said.
Baloyi confirmed that Thovhele Masia was recognised in 2006, based on the information submitted by the Masia Royal Family. “The Royal Family will be having all the records pertaining to the appointment of Thovhele Masia,” she added. Several efforts to get comment from the Masia royal family were unsuccessful.
Rural farmers must play active role in protecting the environment
By Elmon Tshikhudo
Vhamusanda Vho-Philamisevhe Dzivhuluwani
Ramalivhana, the traditional leader of Makwarani outside Thohoyandou, has called on communities to become actively involved in the fight against land degradation and not to practise farming on unsuitable areas. Ramalivhana addressed communities falling under the Matangari Service Centre during the Department of Agriculture in Vhembe’s Land Care Day, which is focused on environmental awareness, held at Makwarani Primary’s school grounds on Friday, 10 March.
During the event, experts from the Limpopo Department of Economic Development, Environment and Tourism (LEDET), Mr Michael Netshivhodza, Mr Mboswobeni Mankhili, Ms Thivhavhudzi
Gloria Nekhavhambe and Mr Muofhe Masutha, shared valuable insights.
The event facilitator, Ms Lerato Prudence Nenweli, who is also the agricultural advisor in the area, said that through her daily interactions with communities in the area, she had come to realise the extent of the damage caused to the environment and felt something should be done.
“We realised that communities who are largely dependent on agriculture were farming over the mountains, next to wells and even along dongas, leading to erosion in times of rain. We realised that many [farmers] did that because of a lack of knowledge, and this is the reason why we roped in the experts to come and address the issue,” she said.
Nenweli added that their programme also included the Junior Land Care, a volunteer programme that encourages young South Africans to play an active role in protecting
their environment. The programme focuses on teaching children how to use their natural resources wisely and to care for the environment.
“We have hope that people will have a positive outlook on the environment after this event,” she said.
Vhamusanda Vho-Ramalivhana expressed his dissatisfaction on the extent of damage being caused in rural environmental settings. “Things have changed and there is no longer control in our villages. The main culprits are residents from townships like Thohoyandou and Makwarela, who now use our villages as dumping sites for disposable nappies and other refuse. We are making a call to municipalities to have proper control on illegal dumping. We also call on our communities to desist from farming in areas that are not suitable for agriculture, for the sake of our environment,” he said.

By Victor Mukwevho
Log leaders Dipeni FC opened up a six-point gap at the top of the SAB League Stream I when they beat second-placed Tshanzhe FC in an entertaining game played at Dipeni Grounds on Saturday.
Dipeni FC took the game to their opponents from the first whistle, creating good scoring opportunities from both flanks.
Realising that they were in danger, Tshanzhe decided to pack in their defence and rely on counter-attacks. This did not work and Dipeni drew first blood in the 14th minute when their prolific but often also selfish left-footed striker, Sipho Masia, finished off a cross from Jerry Ndou from the right flank. The score was 1-0 in favour of Dipeni FC when the teams took the half-time break.
In the second half, Tshanzhe FC realised that they would have to attack if they wanted to win
the game. Their undoing, however, was that they tried to go through the middle of the park, where Dipeni FC’s defence was rock solid.
After absorbing the pressure, Dipeni FC scored the second goal through Jerry Ndou, who headed in a corner kick from the right flank to take the lead to 2-0.
After the game, Dipeni FC’s assistant coach, Itani Mphaga, admitted that Tshanzhe FC had given them a tough time.
“They were a better team in the second half, but we are happy that we collected maximum points. After beating the second-placed team in our stream, we are very optimistic that we stand a good chance of winning the league,” he said.

Another humiliating loss for Maindis
By Frank Mavhungu
Another humiliation over the past weekend means that things are fast moving from bad to worse in the camp of Maindis Ladies FC. Although they were playing in front of their home crowd, Maindis were brutally walloped 0-5 by the University of Western Cape FC (UWC) in their Hollywoodbets Super League match that was played at the Giyani Stadium on Saturday.
Maindis are still to win a league match this season.
Saturday’s defeat was the sixth in a row for the Bungeni team. The chairman of the club, Mr Falaza Mdaka, is adamant that his team will make amends in
their future matches and collect enough points to push the team to a better position on the log standings.
According to him, they could have won their game against UWC, had they managed to convert the clear scoring chances they had created. He said that his strikers had missed three obvious chances earlier in the last half. At that stage, the visitors were still leading 1-0. Mdaka said that the UWC had managed to score the other four goals after Maindis had lost two key players, Xiluva Tshabalala and Molatelo Thabana, through injuries.
What was worrying Mdaka the most was the fact that the two players may not be
available for their next fixture. Maindis’ next fixture will be against University of Johannesburg at the UJ Campus Stadium on Saturday. The other player who is also a doubtful starter is the team’s number one goalkeeper, Simphiwe Mabukane. Mabukane has missed the team’s last two games because of injury.
The other weekend fixtures are Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies vs TUT Football Club, University of Pretoria Ladies vs JVW FC, UWC vs First Touch Academy, Coal City Wizards vs Copper Belts, City Lads vs Royal AM, Thunderbirds Ladies vs Richmond United and TS Galaxy Queens vs Durban Ladies.
More misery for Black Leopards as they let Casric Stars off the hook
By Frank Mavhungu
The head coach of Black Leopards, Mr Owen Da Gama, reckons that his team could have beaten Casric Stars and enhanced their chances to escape the relegation axe at end of the season, had it not been for the fact that Lady Luck was not on their side. The Motsepe Foundation Championship League match, which ended in a 1-1 draw, was played at the Malamulele Stadium last Saturday.
During an interview with him shortly after the game, Da Gama pointed out various factors that had contributed to their failure to collect the maximum points. He described Tiklas Thutlwa’s injury as a big blow to the team. Thutlwa was taken to
hospital after he had collapsed 14 minutes into the game.
He was replaced by the former Kaizer Chiefs’ dribbling wizard, Siphelele Ntshangase. Although Ntshangase is a highly experienced player, his contribution to the game was minimal. Da Gama revealed that he was forced to replace Ntshangase early in the last half after realising that his performance was below par.
He said that his team had started to play their normal attacking football after he had made some changes to the line-up. At that stage, the visitors from Siyabuswa in Mpumalanga were playing with their backs against the wall. Da Gama reckoned that his team could have capitalised on their opponents’ setback, but Saturday was just not their day.
He praised his team for
their overall performance, considering the fact that they were playing against one of the top three teams in the league.
Leopards were leading 1-0 when the teams adjourned for the half-time break. Matimu Tshabalala, who was the goal scorer in their 1-0 victory against Magesi FC last Tuesday (14th), was on target in the 24th minute.
Casric Stars fought back and in the 56th minute, Lehlohonolo Mojela beat the Leopards’ keeper with a ground cutter.
Had they managed to beat Casric Stars, Black Leopards would have moved a step up on the log standings. Lidoda duvha are still languishing at the bottom of the log with 18 points, one behind Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila FC (TTM).
Mpheni Home Defenders and Giyani
Happy Boys in the league
By Frank Mavhungu
The affiliates of the Limpopo Stream of the ABC Motsepe League will play their last league matches for the current season this weekend. All roads will lead to the Louis Trichardt High School Grounds on Saturday afternoon, where the much-awaited deciding game between Mpheni Home Defenders and Giyani Happy Boys will take place.
Not only must Happy Boys win the match to secure a place in the national promotional playoffs, but they must score at least seven goals in the game. On the other hand, a draw will be good enough for Home Defenders to be crowned the stream champions. Home Defenders are leading the pack with 36 points, three ahead of Happy Boys.
The spirits are high in the camps of the two teams after collecting full points in last weekend’s matches. Happy
decider
Boys used their home-ground advantage and beat United Artists 1-0 at the Xikukwani Stadium outside Giyani, while Home Defenders managed to beat Munaca FC by the same margin.
The other match that promises to be a real humdinger will be between Vondwe XI Bullets and Munaca FC, which will be played at the Tshifudi Stadium. Munaca and Bullets are not certain about their future as affiliates of the ABC Motsepe League as they are both fighting for survival. Munaca and Bullets played to a 1-1 draw in
their first-round league match that was played at the Makhado Show Grounds about four months ago.
United Artists will host Musina United at the Makhuvha Stadium. Musina United are not yet safe regarding relegation. Tzaneen United will lock horns with Mighty FC at the Nkowankowa Stadium in Tzaneen. The Dolphins FC will entertain PJ Stars at the Ben Serake Stadium outside Polokwane. The other weekend fixtures are Ditlou FC vs Ngoabe City Motors and Tubatse United vs Phinnet City.

VFA and Black Leopards will have to work hard to avoid relegation
By Frank Mavhungu
With six matches remaining before the end of the Motsepe Foundation Championship League soccer season, no clarity exists about which team will gain automatic promotion to the DStv Premiership Division and which ones will be relegated to the lower division at the end of the season.
Although Black Leopards are currently lying at the bottom of the log with 18 points, that the team will be campaigning in the lower division come next season is not a foregone conclusion. Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila (TTM) are perched in the second-last position with one point more than Black Leopards. The other relegation candidates
are Baroka FC, Platinum City Rovers and MM Platinum FC.
Black Leopards must beat their fellow relegation candidates when they meet them to enhance their chances of escaping the chop. Their next fixture will be against Baroka FC at the Global Stadium in Lebowakgomo next Saturday, 1 April. Then they will take on TTM, with whom they will lock horns at the Thohoyandou Stadium on Saturday, 9 April, followed by an away match against Platinum City Rovers. Lidoda duvha’s second-last fixture will be against Cape Town All Stars. They will wrap up their league programme with an away fixture against Venda Football Academy at the Thohoyandou Stadium.

Gitto steers Defenders to a victory
By Kaizer Nengovhela
Gift “Gitto” Nemutandani steered his team, Mpheni Home Defenders, to a 1-0 victory over Munaca FC in a Safa Limpopo ABC Motsepe league match played at the Makhado Show Grounds on Saturday.
Munaca took the game to Defenders in the first 17 minutes, but their speedy forward, Aluwani “Killer” Nedzamba, let them down by shooting aimlessly at the goal posts. Defenders rectified their mistakes soon afterwards. Their diminutive striker, Orilwela Nematenda, beat the offside trap but lost possession with only the keeper, Ludick Mkhatshwa, at his mercy.
The scoreboard was still blank when the teams adjourned for half time. Early in the second half, Defenders introduced Gift Nemutandani, Thabelo Tshikhweta and Ernest Munyadziwa respectively. The only goal of the match came in the 74th minute when Gift Nemutandani headed in a cross
from a corner kick.
Munaca initially showed a spirit of commitment, but their original stamina vanished and their back line started to leak. Munaca had a taste of bad luck in the 86th minute when Rinae Madzhuta took a penalty shot but shot into the hands of the keeper.
least four points in their six remaining fixtures to be safe, most of their remaining hurdles look tricky. Some of their remaining fixtures will be against teams fighting for survival, while others are in the race for promotion. Some of the teams they will face along the way include Casric Stars and Cape Town Spurs, who are both within the top three teams on the log standings. TTM will be lucky if they manage to retain their Motsepe Foundation Championship for another season.
Vhadau Vha Damani are still to win a league match this year. They are still battling to come to terms with the 0-3 drubbing they had suffered at the hands of Uthongathi FC last Saturday.
Tshikhwani Stone Breakers beat Mango Academy in dying minutes
By Kaizer Nengovhela
Tshikhwani Stone Breakers strengthened their position in the Safa Vhembe SAB League match stream B when they beat Mango Soccer Academy 3-2 at the Eltivillas Grounds on Saturday.
Breakers took the game to their opponents from the first whistle. That resulted in Mango’s losing cohesion in the middle of the park.
Breakers capitalised and
scored their opening goal in the 20th minute. Their killer-striker, Tshifhiwa Ralutanda, received a well-timed pass from Khodani Lukheli and gave the keeper, Desmond Ranyimane, no chance.
The second half saw Mango pushing hard in their search for goals. Seeing the Louis Trichardt team equalise was not surprising. Piet Matshira unleashed a half volley from the edge of the box. The keeper of Breakers, Khongelani Baloyi,
watched helplessly as the ball landed in the back of the net.
Breakers increased the margin when Livhuwani Masindi hooked in a loose ball after a scramble within the box. Their celebrations were cut short when Mango scored the equalising goal in the 74th minute.
Breakers’ midfielders continued to distribute some telling passes from the middle of the park in search of more goals.
Matome Letlalo of Mango forced his way through the defence of Breakers and passed to Fhumulani Tshivhula, whose attempt missed the target by inches.
Realising that Mango were firing on all cylinders, Breakers started to cool down the ball as a time-wasting strategy. Their defence was solid enough to keep the attacks of Mango out of the net.
Breakers’ third goal was scored by Khetho Tahula after he picked up a square pass from Luvhengo Maluma late in the match and found the net.
Rudzani Rambau, who did duty on Munaca’s left flank, had his chance in the 27th minute after receiving a brilliant pass from Thabiso Moitsapo. He shot aimlessly from close range and the ball went wide.
Justice Mutileni now also a FIFA Youth Coach
By Kaizer Nengovhela
Well-known local coach and mentor Justice Mutileni is now also an accredited FIFA Youth Coach. He received his license after attending a course last week in Gauteng at SAFA’s technical office.
Mutileni, who hails from Mashamba village, has a long and illustrious career as coach in the Vhembe region. After hanging up his soccer boots in 1999, he decided to pursue a career in coaching. He completed an introductory coaching course the following year and was appointed by the Hlanganani Football Association as head coach for their U/12 and U/14 teams.
He also coached Maindis Ladies FC, where he served as head coach for three years. Some of the other teams he coached between 2005 and 2014 include Mukondeni Innocent Defenders, FC Basel, JM School of Excellence, the SAFA Vhembe U/17 squad, and the Limpopo SAB U/21 team.
When Madridtas FC bought the ABC Motsepe League franchise in 2016, they put their trust in Mutileni, whom they appointed as the team’s head coach. He migrated to another ABC Motsepe League side, The Dolphins FC, where he stayed for two seasons. The Dolphins FC qualified for the national promotional play-offs twice in a row under the guidance of Mutileni.
He also coached Venda Football Academy in 2019 to 2020, when the team was still playing in the Limpopo ABC Motsepe league.
He joined Munaca FC in February this year, a team competing in the Limpopo stream of the ABC Motsepe League, as assistant coach to Moses Muthelo.
He has since been asked to take full coaching responsibilities for the team.
Mutileni also boasts a SAFA D License, a SAFA Level One coaching certificate, a CAF A License coaching certificate and an Ajax Cape Town coaching certificate.

Venda Football Academy (VFA) emerged as the victors when they crushed Polokwane City 3-2 in their Motsepe Foundation Championship League match that was played at the Thohoyandou Stadium last Saturday.
The game had all the characteristics of a typical derby, and the battle was fierce from the start right to the end.
After the game, the head coach of VFA, Mr Joel Masutha, applauded his players. He said that the players had done everything in line with his instructions and that, at some stage, they had gone the extra mile and given him more than he had asked from them.
Masutha said that the two successive victories had given everyone in the club the hope that the team would escape the relegation axe at the end of the season. VFA managed to beat JDR Stars 2-1 at the same venue last Wednesday (15th).
VFA have moved a few steps up
on the log standings with the two victories. They are now lying in the 10th spot on the log standings with 29 points. They need at least four points in their six remaining league matches to retain their Motsepe Foundation Championship League franchise for at least one more season.
Mr Masutha, or The Prophet as he is affectionately called, further revealed that although his mandate was to save the team from relegation, his target was to win most of their remaining matches, so that the team could finish the league programme in a respectable position on the log standings.
Mr Masutha’s counterpart from Polokwane City, Mr Phuti Mohafe, did not avail himself for an interview after the game. Instead, he rushed to the team’s dressing room without looking back.
VFA’s goals were scored by Banele Gama, Rhulani Manzini and the team’s Zimbabwean midfielder, Tatenda Tavengwa, while City’s goals came via Puleng Marema and Bulelani Nikani.
TTM suspend head coach Ferreira for allegedly spitting at player
By Frank Mavhungu
The head coach of Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila FC (TTM), Mr Johnny Ferreira, has been placed on precautionary suspension. According to the team manager, Mr Azwihangwisi Phasha, Mr Ferreira’s suspension follows an ugly incident that happened during the team’s training session last week. Phasha refused to give more details regarding the incident, saying that the matter was subject to investigation. He said that Mr Ferreira would be summoned to appear before the club’s disciplinary committee if the investigation found a need to do so. He said that the allegations were so serious that the club’s management was compelled to place the coach on precautionary suspension with immediate
effect, pending the finalisation of the investigation.
A source close to the team, who wished to remain anonymous, said that the 65-year-old mentor was involved in a heated debate with one of the players, Mokgantle Katleho, during the training session. The argument is said to have turned ugly when Mr Ferreira allegedly lost his temper and spat in the face of the player. All this is said to have happened in full view of the other players. This season is probably the worst for Mr Ferreira. He joined TTM, or Vhadau Vha Damani as they are also called, from Venda Football Academy at the beginning of the season. He left TTM for Black Leopards four months down the line. His departure from TTM came after the then president of the club, Mr Masala Mulaudzi, had
gone public, saying the club was in a difficult financial position.
Mr Ferreira only spent one month at Lidoda duvha before he returned to TTM early this year. His return to TTM is still to be felt so far. The team has lost seven games under his guidance after his return from Black Leopards. Their latest humiliation was a 0-3 drubbing at the hands of Uthongathi FC at the Princess Magogo Stadium in Durban last Saturday. The team is currently lying in the 15th spot on the log standings with 19 points from 24 outings. TTM’s next fixture will be against Cape Town All Stars at the Dr Molemela Stadium in Bloemfontein next Saturday, 1 April.
All efforts to solicit comments from Mr Ferreira did not bear any fruits as his phone went unanswered in all instances.
Former Black Leopards’ player to coach an SA granny team
By Frank Mavhungu
Former star player for Black Leopards FC Eric Ramavhale has been assigned the responsibility to coach one of the South African grannies’ soccer teams, Vakhegula Vakhegula. The team is scheduled to take part in the Grannies International Football Tournament that will be
staged at the Nkowankowa Stadium in Tzaneen from 26 to 29 March.
According to one of the organisers of the tournament, Ms Beka Ntsanwisi, the decision to appoint Mr Ramavhale to the position of head coach was reached when they realised that he is currently actively involved in the grannies’ football as a coach and sponsor. Ms Ntsan-
wisi is the founder of Vakhegula Vakhegula FC. Ramavhale played for several professional teams, including Black Leopards, in the late nineties.
Twenty teams from around the globe will take part in the event.
The toss for the tournament was held last Saturday. The teams have been divided into five groups. Group A comprises
Vakhegula Vakhegula (RSA), Muzi United (Malawi), Motseeo FC (Lesotho) and Glory Gogos (RSA).
Teams that belong to Group B are Mamie Foot Togo (Togo), Mbombela Gogos (RSA), Lepressas FC (USA) and Corumana Velhos (Mozambique).
Group C teams are Tooteuse Tout Age (France), Consha Magogo Stars (Zimbabwe), Femme
Foot Togo (Togo) and Thembisa Gogos (RSA). The fourth group consists of the following teams: Femme Foot Guinea (Guinea), Eduardo Mondlane FC (Mozambique), The Breakers (USA) and Dikgoshigadi FC (RSA). Teams that will compete in Group E are Florima FC (USA), Northern Stars (RSA), Yasa Grannies FC (Zambia) and KZN Gogos (RSA).
