No bail for man accused of killing daughter (3)

By Silas Nduvheni Judgement on the bail application of the father who had allegedly killed his three-year-old daughter with a hammer earlier this month was reserved by the Mutale Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, 21 September, after both the State and the legal representatives of the accused closed their arguments regarding his application.

The 36-year-old accused, Mulalo Mathegu from the rural village of Matavhela near Mafukani outside Thohoyandou, faces a charge of murder. This comes after he took his daughter from her grandparents’ house on the evening of 2 September, following a serious argument with the child’s mother that had apparently left him very angry. He allegedly later notified family and friends via WhatsApp messages and calls that he intended to kill the child and then kill

himself as well.

According to a source, Mathegu drove his daughter in his car the next day to the Tshamutora Mountains near Gundani village, a few kilometres from Matavhela village. There, he allegedly took a hammer and hit her over the head with it. He then put her dead body in the boot of his car and tied a rope to a nearby tree to hang himself. However, just before he could kill himself, community members and police officials, who had by then been hunting for him, arrived at the scene. Mathegu ran from them, but they pursued him. The angry father allegedly became aggressive and later injured a police sergeant. Another police officer then shot him in the leg and was finally able to arrest him, with the help of a crowd of people from nearby villages.

Mathegu’s legal representative, Advocate Rembuluwani Gadabeni, told the media that he had strong arguments for having his client released on bail. He ar-

gued before the court that his client was not a flight risk as he had allegedly been attacked by community members and the police at Tshithuthuni village while he was on his way to report the incident at the Mutale Police Station.

“Unknown community members and police started attacking him with stones that day, where he later injured the policeman out of self-defence, as he was alone. Now community members around Matavhela, Mufulwi and Mafukani are threatening that, if [he is] released on bail, they will be baying for his blood,” said Advocate Gadabeni.

The state prosecutor in Mutale, Attorney Mashudu Ramulumo, argued that the accused’s life might well be in danger if he were released on bail as he had also thrown rocks at the community members who were present during his arrest.

Mathegu’s bail application was postponed to Tuesday, 28 September, while the accused remains in custody.

The Makhado Municipality’s spokesperson, Mr Louis Bobodi, said that the municipality had obtained an interim court order in the Limpopo High Court last week. The interdict forbids the allocation of stands and the erecting or the extending of structures by the land occupiers. It also authorises the municipality to demolish any complete or incomplete structure, occupied or not occupied, erected on the property.

Elelwani Julia Nemakhavhani and the Zwiakonadzea Group, a music ensemble based in Makwarani village, are such an inspiring group of ladies who share their optimism about a brighter future, just in time for the National Heritage Month celebrations.

This music group also sings beautiful songs about the importance of maintaining one’s heritage through cultural dances and various art forms.

“We need to focus more on ploughing mealies and other grain-based produce in our own fields and yards, and make our own mealie meal - without all the modern preservatives,” she said. “We were fortunate last year that the Creator opened the heavens with abundant rain. We were able to till the land and had such a good harvest.”

The group, comprising Nemakhavhani and backing vocalists Elizabeth Thanyani, Thifhelimbilu Jinneth Ndou, Nkhangweni Rosinah Nemakhavhani, Thingaambu Christinah Mmbadu and Thizwihangwi Sara Rasikhinya, proudly perform in traditional attire and calls upon the youths to emulate them by wearing African regalia.

“No voting if the D3715 Road is not fixed,” warn community structures

By Bernard Chiguvare The ongoing fight by community structures to get the government to deliver on their promise to do something about the state of the D3715 Road still seems to be falling on deaf ears.

The Sinthumule-Kutama Concerned Group (formerly known as the Sinthumule-Kutama Crisis Committee), the Dzanani Taxi Association and the Kutama Business Forum held a briefing last Friday where the MEC for Public

Works and Infrastructure was called on to meet with them urgently regarding this issue.

“We are not going to close voting registration stations in our area, but if the Limpopo Department of Public Works and Infrastructure does not heed our call, there will not be any voting from anyone in this area,” said Elijah Liremi, a member of the Sinthumule-Kutama Concerned Group.

To date, many innocent lives have already been lost on the D3715 Road because of its

poor and potholed condition.

This is also not the first time that communities have raised concerns about the state of this road. Last year (2020), hundreds of people, led by the Zoutpansberg Community Development Forum, marched to the Makhado Municipality to protest about the road and other problems. Earlier this year, another march to the Makhado Municipality about the state of the same road took place.

The Makhado mayor urged the Kutama-Sinthumule Concerned Group to be patient and promised to look into the issue.

But residents are not satisfied with this repeated promise anymore. “We call on all Kutama-Sinthumule residents not to go and vote if the D3715 Road is not fixed by 1 October 2021. We will shut down all voting stations in our area on voting day (1 November 2021),” the community structures warned, and further urged motorists not to renew their

driving licence discs, should the department fail to attend urgently to the issue at hand.

The community structures gave the Limpopo Department of Public Works seven days to meet with them.

In response to this paper’s enquiry whether the department would meet with the structures, the spokesperson for the Limpopo Department of Public Works and Infrastructure, Joe Seabi, confirmed that MEC Namane Dickson Masemola had invited them to a meeting on Thursday, 23

September 2021.

“We are aware of the state of the road. The MEC has been to the road before. At the time, the complaint was about both the D3715 and D959 Roads, which had been largely rehabilitated, and a solution has been prepared for D3715,” Seabi said. “We urge people to vote and exercise their democratic rights, whilst respecting other people’s rights in the process.

The roads have been part of our priorities for rehabilitation and the D3715 Road will also be attended to.”

After the reports about the centre appeared, the SIU included the project in their investigation into fraud and corruption at the NLC, and investigators visited the area on 6 September. Captain Saul Nkosi from the SIU confirmed that Mudau was one of the people interviewed to try and determine how the grant money had been spent.

The SIU began investigating the NLC after a special proclamation was signed by President Cyril Ramaphosa in October 2020. A special task team, which includes the SIU, the Hawks and independent investigators appointed by the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition, was also

set up.

Chief Nemuvhalani said that they had been informed of the SIU’s visit to the area, but the traditional council members had not been interviewed.

One of the community members who was very outspoken and critical about the activities at the drop-in centre, Mr Ntoleni Booi, was attacked and stabbed a few days after the Limpopo Mirror’s story was published.

Booi, who was quoted in the story, had accused the leaders of the project of using the money for their own benefit.

Booi, who was attacked on 22 August, said his assailant had attacked him from behind as he was walking home at 02:00. He suffered three stab wounds to his neck and right shoulder and was taken to hospital for treatment. A suspect was arrested after the stabbing.

NLC and water projects

Local authorities not consulted

The NLC refused to respond to questions requesting more clarity on the borehole project. Spokesperson Ndivhuho Mafela issued the NLC’s now-standard reply that they were unable to comment because of the SIU investigation.

“It is for this reason that we refrain from commenting on any matters that fall within this time frame [covered by the presidential proclamation.]. It is only fair that we allow the investigations to take their own course and be concluded instead of running parallel commentary,” he said.

Over the past five years, the NLC has given grants amounting to tens of millions for water projects supposedly run by local NPOs with very little knowledge or experience of running big infrastructure projects. These include more than R50 million channelled via the Vhembe-based Konani Pfunzo Learning Centre, a private school in rural Limpopo. The majority of these projects were outside Limpopo but, according to a 2018 NLC press release, 18 early childhood development (ECD) centres in Limpopo were equipped with boreholes.

“A conduit relationship existed between Konani Pfunzo and the Tshikovha Graduate Academy, but the direct beneficiaries were the communities for which the boreholes were created. 200 boreholes were indeed constructed for the benefit of the intended beneficiaries,” the NLC responded when an article about Konani Pfunzo appeared in the Sunday Times in January 2018.

Spreadsheets with the supposed details of the boreholes and their locations, supplied by the NLC in 2018, reflect far fewer than 200 boreholes and are riddled with duplicates. Although the NLC said that some of the boreholes were in Limpopo, no boreholes in the province were included in the spreadsheets.

While consulting the local authorities tasked with managing Limpopo’s scarce water resources prior to the start of these multi-million-rand projects would make sense, this does not seem to be the case with the project supposedly funded via the Tshimbupfe Drop-In Centre. The Lottery-funded project does not appear in the integrated development plans (IDP) of any of the Vhembe municipalities.

Mr Matodzi Ralushai, spokesperson for the Vhembe District Municipality (VDM), said that they were not aware of any water project at Hanani village.

The VDM is the only water-services provider in the region. But Ralushai said he was unaware of pipelines and water taps that Cllr Mudau said would be installed as part of the project.

Any project to supply water to villages such as Tshimbupfe or Hanani must first get approval from the local Water Services Authority, Ralushai said. Any such project must first be evaluated by the relevant officials within the VDM before being implemented. If the project meets the necessary requirements, it would be considered and submitted for approval by the council for implementation, Ralushai said.

He warned that listing projects in the VDM’s IDP would be “very difficult” if they were implemented without the knowledge and approval of the municipality. The IDP not only provides for the establishment of infrastructure but also for its maintenance.

The municipality needed to include projects in its annual budget, Ralushai said. If a project has not gone through the official process, spending money on maintenance becomes difficult, as any such expenditure could be considered irregular and unauthorised expenditure by the auditor-general.

Mr George Sithole, communication manager for the Collins Chabane mu-

nicipality, said that his municipality was also unaware of any water project at Hanani village. Cllr Mudau did not declare any details of his involvement in the NLC-funded R10 million project to the municipality, he said.

Cllr Mudau is a ward councillor at Collins Chabane municipality, where he also heads up the municipal public accounts committee (MPAC), a Section 79 committee that fulfils an oversight role at the municipality.

Still a candidate The name of Cllr Mudau still appears on the list of candidates for the 1 November local elections, from what could be established. Mr Tshifhiwa Dali, the spokesperson of the ANC in the Vhembe Region, said that the organisation “takes note” of the serious allegations levelled against one of their councillors in the Vuwani area.

“Our view towards corruption is clear.

We are currently renewing the organisation. We, however, wish to reiterate that the principle of innocent until proven guilty should be observed,” he said. “We have also noted that the matter is under investigation by the SIU and therefore we will await the outcomes of such investigations,” he said. More questions to obtain clarity on the R10 million lottery project were sent to Mudau earlier this week. When he was phoned and asked whether he had received the questions and whether he would respond, he ended the call.

Questions were also sent to NLC board member Dr Muthuhadini Madzivhandila, asking him whether he had declared his relation to Mudau.

He did not deny the direct family relation, but said he had made all the necessary declarations as required by the Lotteries Act. “The NLC is co-operating with the SIU investigation looking (into) projects funded between 1 January 2014 up to 30 November 2020, therefore I am not at liberty to comment on projects under the scope of investigation of the SIU,” he said.

The man makes his shoes by hand, as he does not have all the relevant machinery for this trade yet.

The material and soles he buys from local shops, and he uses shoe glue, crochets, special knives, needles and threads to make an attractive product. “It needs creativity, because one needs to make something that will attract the public to buy the products.”

He sells his shoes in Louis Trichardt and surrounding areas for between R70 and R250, depending on the material used.

Today, Mulaisi brings the fruit of his hard labour to the

table. The money he makes from his shoemaking business enables him to look after his four kids, who are all still in school. “My children no longer go to bed on empty stomachs since I became a shoemaker. I can now pay their school fees and provide them with basic needs, so that they can proudly face the future like other kids,” he said.

Though the family does not have a fixed monthly income, they keep their heads above water. “My income depends on the availability of customers.

But I can see the light at the end of the tunnel because I no longer struggle to survive.”

Mulaisi said that many

opportunities to make money existed, but that laziness was a common stumbling block for success. “Our people do not want to use their brains profitably. Laziness breeds misery, and our people must learn that they can survive even though they are not formally employed. We need to wake up and do something to contribute to the economic development of our society.”

He said people must stand up and do something to uplift themselves. “There is no use to wait for miracles, because we are the ones who can make things happen.”

Another loss for Makhado Council

passed away on 16 September at her house at Ha-Nthabalala after a short illness.

Makhado municipality’s mayor, Cllr Samuel Munyai, said that the cruelty of death had robbed the local community of yet another valuable asset.

“Mukwevho was a distinguished comrade who strived for the development of her community until her last day on earth,” Munyai said. “She always conducted her duties with zeal and dedication. Words alone could not describe her commitment to her work. She was a visionary and trustworthy human being whose desire to serve her community motivated her to work hard.”

Munyai described her as a “real daughter of the soil” who would have sacrificed everything for her job. “We are saddened by her sudden departure, but we have no doubt that

she will rest in peace. On behalf of the Makhado Municipality, I would like to send our condolences to the Mukwevho family and assure them of our unending support during this trying time. It is difficult for all of us to accept what happened, but we must also understand that God does his will in his own time,” he said.

Ms Sedzani Mukwevho, the deceased’s daughter, said that her mother had been a uniting figure in the family.

“We are very sad. She was still young and had so much still ahead of her. She will be sorely missed,” she said and added that they were greatly consoled by the massive support from family, friends and community members.

Mukwevho will be buried on Friday, 24 September, at Ha-Nthabalala. The service starts at 06:00.

Hulisani was born in Soweto, although her home is in Nzhelele. She has gone from child star to hosting the heartening 947 Weekend Breakfast with Hulisani show on Saturdays and Sundays. She speaks fondly of her journey to success as part of Momentum’s Success Films, broadcast on social-media platforms, and says she has always been fascinated by TV. “One thing I distinctly remember as a kid is that I had a fascination with the TV,” she said. “I thought that you could just open the back of the TV, climb inside and be a part of the show,” she laughed, remembering.

She says that YoTV was a ground breaker in its own right as it was unscripted and youthful. “To be trusted as a young presenter to do live television was unheard of,” she recalled. “You had kids entertaining the nation for hours. It was just you, being yourself, and that was the challenge.”

While Hulisani has always been outspoken and confident, she says that being a young woman in the entertainment industry has its snags.

Societal standards and cultural barriers where women are not seen or considered successful unless they are married are issues many women still face today.

“I remember a certain conversation on social media that essentially stripped me of every achievement I ever had in my career and as a woman because now a man was no longer by my side,” she said.

After this incident on social media, she decided to start a ritual to remind herself of what is really important in her life. “I started doing this thing for myself that said, on the first of every month, I’m going to put myself first and do something that I want to do for me, no matter what it is,” she said.

One of the first things she did was jump out of a plane and she loved it. “It was a reminder of how I wanted to step into the next chapter of my life and show up for myself – fearless, courageous, and putting myself first in everything that I do.”

Unstoppable success means three things for her: purpose, power and impact. “Once you discover your purpose, you step into your power, and then you can just sit back and watch the impact,” she says.

During the symposium, Dr Nthambeleni said that, as it was, Univen and the MMSEZ were in the process of signing five memorandums of understanding that would see the two parties collaborate in undertaking research, scholarly and commercial initiatives for mutual benefit.

Not a lot of local enthusiasm during the weekend’s voter registration

By Bernard Chiguvare Voter registration the past weekend seemed to have progressed fairly smoothly, albeit that the turnout was not wonderful.

Limpopo Mirror visited two voting stations, namely at Makhado lLbrary and Masedi Combined School in Tshikota on Sunday (18th) to monitor the proceedings.

Very few new voters showed up to register at Makhado Library, while at Tshikota the ANC, DA and EFF had each set up camp a few metres away from the registration centre.

The political parties looked happy and prepared for the upcoming elections. They all seemed to be satisfied with how the day progressed at the Tshikota voting station. Some residents paid visits to their respective camps, while others disappeared into the voting centre to register.

Bessy Jones, DA PR councillor for Makhado Municipality, said that they were a little concerned that so few people had come out to register. “We are not sure why this is. It could be that the residents are unhappy with all the unsettled services delivery issues,” she said.

Desiree van der Walt, DA Limpopo campaign manager for the elections, spoke about the voter registration in Vhembe District as a whole,

“There were some glitches at some of the voting registration centres concerning voter-management devices (VDM), but the IEC (Independent Electoral Commission) was prepared for this,” van der Walt said. “We (DA) were also prepared with our own forms to monitor the IEC. Voters signed our forms as proof in case they do not appear on the voters’ roll, come voting day. This would allow them to vote. Overall, the process went well.”

Dunani Baloyi, the EFF Vhembe’s regional secretary, also applauded the voter-registration process. “Though the registration was slow, maybe due to networks, the

process went well. However, we are concerned that voters who might have left without registering on Saturday due to the slow process, did not come back again on Sunday, as some of them live far away,” he said.

Huge Khosa from the Pan African Congress (PAC) of Azania also alluded that the process went well. “Though the process went well, the majority of voters are just so demoralised by the government, who have been making false promises since 1996. We did not see many voters coming out to register for the upcoming elections,” said Khosa, who is Musina’s sub-region elections coordinator for the PAC.

Mmbulaheni Joseph Matsiari’s second album, Heartache, was released earlier this year and boasts 10 feel-good and very inspiring tracks.

The singer, better known in music circles as Muthude, is a former teacher at Rivierplaats near Elim. His music career started in 2017 with the release of his first CD, called Living in the Modern World.

One of the songs, Leave or Stay, which features on the new album, advises people that whether they

leave or keep staying in any kind of bad relationship is their choice.

Coleen Siaga, community builder around Thohoyandou and Muthude’s promoter, said he would like to see the artist produce good-quality music that could really be appreciated. All songs were composed by Muthude himself, with Vanessa “Vanepha” Mphanama as backing vocalist.

Missyfab finally releases her first full-length EP

This 29-year-old local sensation has been singing on the side for many years, working with award-winning Tshivenḓa artists such as Funi Nematswerani, FizzyToofab and KashflowToofab. Now, to the utter delight of her fans and to show her determination to keep ascending the music ladder, she finally released her ground-breaking EP, titled Asi Muloro.

“We have worked hard to create beats and lyrics that people will remember for a very long time,” she said.

“I consider this my full entry into the music industry and there is no turning back.”

The EP contains nine tracks, including Asi Muloro (ft Funi), Mathada a mbingano (ft Fizzytoob), Change a man, Hope, and Ri ndilani (ft Toofab

Born in Matanda village in the Nzhelele area, she grew up listening to reggae, pop, R&B and gospel, which all had a massive influence on the sound that she releases today. With the outbreak of Covid-19, she found herself pouring her heart out into new songs, and before she knew it, she had a whole album.

However, Missyfab’s first priority still lies with running her mobile hairdressing business, Prestige Image, where she styles people’s hair and sells hair and makeup products around Pretoria, Johannesburg and Venda, as this is her major source of income.

“But I am happy to be able to make the kind of music that people like too.”

Natty King Elijah is versatile when on stage

Not only does his poetic verses range from roots reggae to dancehall and traditional Tshivenda music, but he does percussion as well. In his relatively short music career, The Lion Poet has already worked with other talented, established musicians and producers, such as Mulugisi Mamafha Ndivhuwo, Clemy Nevari, MC-A Andrew Nkhumeleni, Bashean Mudau, Nkala Sadiki and Masala Gera Mudau. These associations helped shape the musician that he is today.

and became more serious in 2010,” he said.

“Since I began attending free vocal and instrumental lessons offered to youths by the late Man Tom Maladzhi, who was a member of the reggae group, Rainbow Dread, I found myself doing better as a lyricist and percussionist.

Soon I was turning my poems into songs.”

In 2015, The Lion Poet and Ndivhuwo “T-Jah” Tuwani recorded and released the song Ndi tshila na Marasta, which became a big hit in music circles and earned both T-Jah and The Lion Poet great recognition.

Today he is a respected artist, especially in the reggae fraternity. He has just released a single, called Lockdown Alert (ft Ras Clemy Nevari), which was recorded at Ananius “Ani B” Begwa’s MB Records. “I love poetry; it is in my veins,” he said. His last album, Ndado shangoni, was released in December 2020.

Simultaneous broadcast will focus on Africa’s heritage Phalaphala FM and Thobela FM will be doing another simultaneous broadcast (simulcast) of the Devhula ha Vhembe and Afrika ya dinaledi shows on Saturday, 25 September, as part of the Heritage Day celebration.

Devhula ha Vhembe, presented by Mpho “Jantiby” Nefale on Phalaphala FM and Afrika ya dinaledi, presented by Max “Maxmixer” Mojapelo on Thobela FM, are music programmes that provide listeners with music from different regions on the African continent.

SABC Limpopo’s marketing manager, Ms Rudzani Mashamba, said that these programmes would be aired on both radio stations at the same time on Saturday as another way of expressing social cohesion and diversity through the project for the listeners. This partnership of the two SABC brands will further show the power of SABC Limpopo Combo.

The two radio stations promise to give their listeners more of what they want to hear, and less of what they do not want on Saturday. Both shows will be broadcast live from one studio from 18:00 to 21:00.

Mashamba said that the two stations aimed to ensure that individuals from these communities have access to knowledge to empower them to live lives based on fundamental human values.

“The SABC showcases a unique radio model of civil society leadership in terms of corporate governance and community-broadcasting service. These radio stations would not be what they are today without the listeners.” She promised that the SABC would always take care of its listeners and strive to make them happy.

Mashamba said that they realised that pleasing all their listeners at the same time was not possible. They therefore accepted contributions and constructive criticism to help them in continuing to grow.

Ndou encourages family ties through writing

By Tshifhiwa Mukwevho Prolific author and poet Azwihangwisi “A.J.R” Nḓou (50) has just published an anthology, called Milomoni ya Maṅaaṅaa, which comprises a selection of 60 verses written by himself, his wife, Avhafunani Julia Maṱhabi, and his four children, Vhuhone, Rialivhuwa Reality, Vhukhethwa, and Apfeswaho Gladness.

Ndou, who is also a pastor and one of the founders of the Mount Transfiguration Christian Church in Khubvi village outside Thohoyandou, said his love of literature had started when he was a young boy. He still firmly believes in keeping the Tshivenda culture and traditions alive through writing and teaching the young the language of their forefathers.

“I incepted the idea to co-author the book with my family because I wanted us to celebrate familyhood,” he said. “Through this publication, we show the nation how a family can be built stronger by uniting and using the talents that God has given us.”

However, the writing process had not been

that easy as he had to juggle between being a husband, father, family head and writing coach at the same time.

“To be honest, it was not easy because to my wife I am not firstly a writer but a husband, as to my children I’m firstly a father,” he said.

“When I corrected and edited their work, they had to deal with someone who inspected what they had done with a critical eye. I had to be a little authoritative, so that they could get along.”

But, at the end of the day, his wife and children started to see a mentor in him and regarded him as a co-worker in compiling their poems. “That’s what made the writing process interesting; they started to see their names on the map of authors and realised that they would be leaving a legacy behind.”

Inspired by DN Tshikambe, NM Mmbi, and MR Nevhutalu, Ndou started writing when he was in Standard 9 (Grade 11). His previous publications are Nzhowenzhowe ya Vharendi, Galatshane, and Phaladzane ya Vhatshena.

Newly revamped ICU ward at Tshilidzini Hospital officially opened by Health MEC

By Silas Nduvheni Limpopo Health MEC Dr Phophi Ramathuba officially opened the newly revamped intensive care unit (ICU) at Tshilidzini Hospital last week.

The newly revamped ward has the capacity for 12 combined ICU beds, two of which will be dedicated to paediatric patients. Each bed will have special ventilators that cater for patients who need special care.

Ramathuba said that Tshilidzini

Hospital was one of the health facilities that required serious infrastructure overhauling and that, working in collaboration with the national department of health (since this is one of their projects), they were hopeful that they would be able to finally achieve the desired results, one ward at a time.

“We are delighted to hand over this top-class facility that has been revamped to cater for our patients with critical conditions. The ward is furnished with high-flow oxygen machines

and ICU beds, and will be used for patients in need of oxygen and who are in critical condition,” MEC Ramathuba said.

According to the MEC, Tshilidzini Hospital was identified as one of the hospitals to be piloted for the National Health Insurance (NHI) roll-out, which meant that a new hospital was supposed to be built. But since the new hospital has not been built yet, they decided to use the Covid-19 budget funds to change things around for the better themselves.

“As is the norm with all elections, political parties have started embarking on campaigns to attract voters. Eskom has noted a very dangerous practice of placing campaign posters on electricity poles,” said Eskom

Vhembe communications officer Shadrack Munyangane.

“Eskom would like to remind all political parties of the dangers associated with putting up election posters on electrical structures. These structures carry live electrical equipment and conductors. When someone gets close to them or touches them it may result in a flash-over or electrical contact. This can cause serious injuries or even be fatal,” he said.

“Only authorised personnel are allowed to climb or work on these structures.

Section 15(3) of the electrical machinery regulations states that ‘No person shall encroach in person or with an object on the minimum safety clearances prescribed in sub-regulation (1), or require or permit any person to do so except by permission from the supplier or user operating the powerline’.”

Munyangane said that attaching posters to electrical structures was not only a contravention of the occupational health and safety act, but also put the lives of valuable employees and volunteers at risk.

Strauss completed matric in 1987, after which he obtained a diploma in agriculture from Elsenburg Agricultural College in Stellenbosch. In 1998, SANParks decided to establish the Tankwa Karoo National Park and our family farm was part of this big expansion effort.

University of Venda PhD graduate Dr Graham Chakafana recently secured a post-doctoral fellowship position at the Stanford University School of Medicine in the United States of America.

Chakafana, who grew up in Masvingo in southern Zimbabwe, is a protein biochemist whose research focuses on the role of proteins in signalling pathways associated with the progression of diseases.

His journey towards his doctoral degree is quite amazing. Chakafana did his undergraduate degree in biotechnology with the Chinhoyi University of Technology in Zimbabwe in 2011, and later obtained his master’s degree in microbiology at the National University of Science and Technology in Zimbabwe in 2015.

“I knew right from my time in high school that I wanted to pursue a career in life sciences,” he said.

Dr Chakafana, who obtained his PhD in Protein Biochemistry in September 2020 at the University of Venda

under the mentorship of Prof Addmore Shonhai and Dr Tawanda Zininga, said that he specifically joined the Protein Biochemistry and Malaria (ProBioM) research group led by Prof Shonhai.

“ProBioM mostly focuses on the role of heat-shock proteins in the development and pathogenicity of malaria,” he said. “Some aspects of my PhD work were conducted at the Protein Structure and Function Research Unit based at the University of the Witwatersrand.”

Just after submitting his PhD thesis, he was offered a position at the Cape Heart Institute within the Department of Medicine at the University of Cape Town, where he worked under the mentorship of Prof Karen Sliwa, who was the President of the World Heart Federation at the time.

In March 2021, he was invited to an interview for a post-doctoral research scientist position in Cardiovascular Proteomics with Stanford University in California, USA. He said the interviewers requested him to present a summary of the PhD research work he conducted at the University of Venda. He then contacted his PhD mentors, who were

Magau United showed no mercy when they hammered Mariadze FC 4-0 in the last-16 round of the Mabena Soccer Tournament.

Saturday’s match was played at the Mashamba Grounds.

United were by far the better side when it came to ball possession. They invaded their opponents’ territory from the first whistle, making it difficult for Mariadze’s midfielders to complete their passes.

minutes into the game and the referee awarded a free kick.

Freddy Mushukwa scored from the spot.

Mariadze lost cohesion in the middle of the park soon after this opening goal. Buasi formed a deadly combination with Vuledzani Sinthumule and Samuel Moyo in the midfield.

In the 28th minute, United increased the margin through Maemu Musiamo. His ground cutter hit the woodwork and crossed the goal line. Mariadze replaced Phumudzo Ramutsindela with Andani

Mulaudzi nine minutes before the end of the first half. That did not stop United from scoring their third goal before the teams adjourned for half time, when Mutshidzi “Lecha” Matavhela scored with a longrange volley. The half-time score was 3-0 in favour of United.

In the second half, United continued to dictate terms, with Mariadze playing defensive football. Thabelo Nemakanga scored the fourth goal, following a neat pass from Samuel Moyo in the 77th minute.

Maindis Ladies let University of Johannesburg students off the hook

By Frank Mavhungu Maindis Ladies FC shared the spoils with the University of Johannesburg FC, following their 1-1 draw in their Hollywood Bets Super League match at the Giyani Stadium on Saturday.

Maindis could have sealed the game in the first half, but their forwards seemed to have forgotten their scoring boots at home. Maindis were all over the visitors in the opening minutes, with their strikers firing from all angles.

One factor that contributed to the team’s poor result was the technical team’s failure to replace the team’s top goal scorer, Molepo Rapatsa, on time. Rapatsa was out of form and fumbled at the goal finish

on numerous occasions.

Realizing that she was unable to live up to the fans’ expectations, Rapatsa decided to vent her frustration by demonstrating her rough skills.

The referee, Mr Fortunate Ngobeni, did not allow her to go unpunished. Rapatsa was reprimanded with a yellow card for dangerous play in the 19th minute. Rapatsa was lucky to escape with a mere yellow card after tackling Refilwe Maseko from behind. The other player who was booked for dangerous play in the first half was Bongisive Nzimande of UJ FC. The scoreboard was still blank when the referee blew the half-time whistle. Maindis were the first to effect change to their starting line-up. They introduced Mavhungu Dzivhani

and sacrificed Molepo Rapatsa four minutes into the last half.

Maindis were the first to blow the trumpet. They were awarded a penalty in the 68th minute. This came after a defender of UJ FC, Pabalo Chela, handled the ball within her own penalty area. Adolphina Bopape made no mistake from the white spot.

Maindis did not have enough time to celebrate their goal. The UJ students were also awarded a penalty moments thereafter.

Their striker, Kabelo Mokoena, was brought down within the box.

Amanda Mthandi converted from the penalty spot. Maindis continued to knock on the opponents’ door in their search for the winning goal, but it was not their day.

The two development crickets team from Sinthumule and Maebani had the opportunity to try out the new kit by playing a T20 match against each other on Saturday. The Sinthumule Western Cricket team batted first, putting up 97 runs before being bowled out in their allotted 20 overs. Dzwerani United Brothers brutally wallop Tshisaulu Magenge Pirates

By Frank Mavhungu In their Thulamela Local Football Association League match played at the Magalanngwe School Grounds on Sunday, Dzwerani United Brothers showed Tshisaulu Magenge Pirates no mercy when they brutally crushed them 4-1.

United Brothers were simply the best from the first whistle.

They took only seven minutes to stamp their authority on the match. They opened their account via Khumbudzo Tshivhenga. He unleashed a rocket from the edge of the box.

Brothers’ second goal seemed to be a wakeup call to the Pirates players. They regrouped from behind, initiating some promising moves as they crossed the centre line. Their solitary goal came in the 27th minute. Kondelelani Maphangwa beat Brothers’ keeper with a close-range half volley.

United Brothers scored the third seven minutes before the teams adjourned for the half-time break. Wavhudi Madzivhandila forced his way through the defence of Pirates and sent the keeper the wrong way with a ground cutter.

The last stanza was characterised by wasted scoring opportunities. Ampfarisaho Khangale of United Brothers caused an upset in the 59th minute. He went loose from the right wing and miskicked the ball from inside the box with the keeper already beaten.

Rembuluwani Mathogo of Pirates was the only player who was booked for dangerous play in the game. United Brothers scored the fourth in the 75th minute via Olugaho Mudau.

Realizing that victory was almost certain, United Brothers relaxed on the ball as a way to manage the game in the last 10 minutes.

After a break of two weeks, the teams affiliated to the Limpopo Stream of the Sasol Women’s League will be back in action again this weekend. Last weekend’s fixtures were postponed to a later date for the burial of the league’s secretary, Mr Patrick Seema, who passed away last week after a short illness. He was buried on Sunday.

The Stars will do battle when Tshandama Young Stars test their strength against Lacoste Morning Stars at the Tshandama Grounds on Saturday. Young Stars will have to double their efforts if they want to collect the full points at the expense of Lacoste. Morning Stars are currently leading the pack, while Young Stars are perched in the third spot from the bottom of the log.

Morning Stars beat Young Stars 2-0 in their first-round league match at the Shayandima School Grounds about three months ago. Morning Stars are still to lose a league match after acquiring the services of five vastly experienced players from the Gauteng-based side, Mito Stars, about two months ago.

The other title chasers, Chippas United Ladies, will visit Sisters FC at the Nwamitwa Grounds outside Tzaneen. Maindis Ladies must beat Queens

By Frank Mavhungu Another busy weekend awaits the teams affiliated to the Hollywood Bets Super League.

The only two teams based in the Limpopo Province, Maindis Ladies and First Touch FC, will be on the road this weekend.

The two teams enjoyed the home-ground advantage in their matches last weekend. Maindis played to a 1-1 draw with the University of Johannesburg FC at the Giyani Stadium last Saturday. First Touch hosted Durban Ladies FC, whom they narrowly beat 1-0 at the Seshego Stadium in Polokwane on the same day.

Maindis will undertake a journey to Phuthaditjhaba in the Free State. Their match against Tsunami Queens will be staged at the Phuthaditjhaba Stadium on Saturday. Maindis must collect the maximum points at all costs to keep their hopes of finishing their league programme among the top eight teams alive. Maindis are currently lying in the 10th spot on the log standings with 16 points accumulated from 17 outings.

Tsunami Queens must keep an eagle eye on the Maindis’ goal poachers, Molepo Rapatsa, Xiluva Tshabalala and Adolphina Bopape or else they will be humiliated in front of their home crowd. Should they fail to beat Tsunami Queens, Maindis will have only themselves to blame. Tsunami Queens are currently perched at the bottom of the log with only seven points.

They had won only two and drawn one of the 17 matches they had played to date.

First Touch too, have every reason to collect

full points in their match against the University of Western Cape FC at the Cape Town Stadium.

A win for First Touch FC will enhance their chances to finish their league programme among the top four teams. First Touch are currently lying in the fifth position on the log with 30 points gained from 16 matches.

The University of Johannesburg FC will host Golden Ladies at the Orlando Stadium in Johannesburg in the only match that will be played on Sunday. The other Saturday’s fixtures are Bloemfontein Celtic vs Richmond United, Thunderbirds Ladies vs Sundowns Ladies, TUT Ladies vs JVW FC and Coal City Wizards vs Durban Ladies.
