Father and children drown in stream during floods
Tragedy struck family A police officer covers the body of Mr Hendrick Malithuba, after it was recovered about 500m from where the accident took place.
Ms Nomathemba Sibanda could not believe that she had survived after losing her husband and two children during the accident. Floods in Vhembe Following the heavy rains last week, a father and his two children were swept away by strong water after the Nissan 1400 bakkie they were traveling in had fallen off a collapsed bridge on the Pondrift road between Musina and Alldays on Sunday night. The body of the father was later found about 500m from the scene of the accident. At the time of our going to press, two days after the accident, the police were still working around the clock to recover the children, who are now presumed dead. The mother of the children and two other occupants of the vehicle were treated for minor injuries and shock at Musina Hospital. The vehicle was carrying six occupants when it had passed across the bridge earlier that day. When they came back after

three hours, they were not aware that the bridge had been swept away. The driver went straight into the deep water and the vehicle was found covered in sand some distance away. Still in shock, Ms Nomathemba Sibanda (22) could not hold back her tears as she explained how the horrible accident left her without her husband and two children. “My husband, Hendrick Malithuba, who was driving the vehicle, and my two children, Thapelo (2) and Thabo (1), are now gone. I feel like the world has turned upside down. Life does not mean anything to me without my husband and children.” Crying heavily, she explained how she survived. “It happened so suddenly that I immediately found myself in the deep waters. I don’t exactly know how I managed to hold some tree branches because the pressure of the water was very strong... - Continues on page 2

Floods cause halt in activities at border South African and Zimbab wean border authorities at the Beit Bridge border post were forced to stop both vehicular and pedestrian traffic tempo rarily on Monday, after the Limpopo Bridge was nearly flooded, following heavy rains. Authorities at the border post were forced to stop traffic after the flooded Limpopo River left the new Limpopo bridge inaccessible. The bridge was closed temporarily for three hours at midnight on Sunday and reopened at around 03:00. Border officials from both countries had to harmonise traffic control systems to ensure the safety of motorists. They also suspended

ing to negotiate a flooded stream. Forty-two more people were left homeless at Tshikwalakwala village after their huts were destroyed by heavy rains that hit the area over the weekend. The local Civil Protection Unit (CPU) also had to dispatch a helicopter to assist stranded villagers. The CPU chairperson, Mr Simon Muleya, said the situation was terrible, adding that the helicopter would continue to assess the situation around the district. Muleya said they had also secured 30 tents as temporary shelter for the villagers.

Four people killed in the Mopani area
Two killed in floods near Pontdrif (From page 1) "I spent the whole night in the cold rain while holding onto the branch of a tree until the water subsided in the morning. I managed to crawl to the road and told a passerby about my ordeal. I later found out that my husband and children were missing.” Another survivor, Mr David Simatla, said he considered himself very lucky to be alive. “Like
lightning, the accident happened so fast that I can’t actually remember what happened. I just found myself holding the trunk of a mopani tree for the whole night until I walked to the road the next morning. I can’t believe that my lovely friend and his two children have been swept away.” The third survivor, Never Sibanda, could only say: “I will never forget this for the
rest of my life. My heart bleeds for those who have been swept away, but I thank God because I’m still alive.” Lt Peter Mudau of the Musina SAPS confirmed the accident and added that the search for the two children was still continuing. movement of heavy duty vehicles over the bridge temporarily . The old Limpopo Bridge was, however, safe for pedestrians, though the situation was monitored closely by the authorities. The torrential rains also claimed the lives of three children, aged between four and nine years, when the houses they were sleeping in collapsed. At the time of our going to press, seven people had already died in the Beit Bridge district due to the rains that started last week. Two people drowned, one along the Bubi River and another one in a pond in the border town, while two adults, a husband and a wife, were swept away while try-
At least four people died in Mopani during the continuous rain and flooding that hit the area for the better part of the past week. The one-year-old Kwatsi Makamu of Gubani village outside Malamulele died after a mud house collapsed on a family. Three members of the family were rushed to Malamulele Hospital after sustaining serious injuries. The MEC for Cooperative Governance and Human Settlements, Mr Clifford Motsepe,
said on Tuesday morning that the disaster management branches in the area were going to distribute more than 200 blankets and about 70 tents to the people who had been affected. They also have two helicopters on standby to assist where there is a need. “We are also going to partner with the South African Red Cross to assist flood victims,” said Motsepe Many pupils and teachers in various parts of Vhembe and Mopani could not report to their respective schools, due to dam-
aged infrastructure. The flood has also affected the supply from water schemes, as pipes were damaged by the floods. Vhembe District Municipality spokesman Matodzi Ralushai said the municipality was still working hard to make sure that people were getting water. “Our disaster emergency team is remaining on full alert to provide assistance to victims of disaster and we also like to advise our people to contact their local municipality if they need help,” said Raslushai.

Emergency workers managed to rescue 877 people who were trapped during the floods in the farming areas around Musina earlier this week. Several farmers, their employees and members of the SANDF were left stranded after heavy rains that swept most of the infrastructure in the province. The affected areas included the farming area of Samaria, where more than 500 people spent the whole night on rooftops while waiting for the authorities to activate the rescue mission. Sixteen members of the SANDF in the Maroi and Weipe area were also left stranded as they were totally cut off from the outside world. At Parma Farm, seven family members were trapped inside their house as the road to their homes was no longer accessible. In the Noordgrens and Echo 7 area, 230 people were completely cut off as they were trapped on an island surrounded by water from the Limpopo River. Members of the farm communities who were evacuated from their areas are offloaded from a Earlier on Sunday evening, the Musina Muhelicopter at an assembly point at Dongola Ranch. nicipality issued a strong warning to all the people who live within 5km of the banks of the Limpopo River to evacuate as the river was overflowing. Municipal spokesperson Wilson Dzebu said the rescue mission started on Monday morning. “We could not start immediately on Sunday evening as it was raining heavily. We also had to mobilize resources like helicopters and skilled people from other provinces.” Dzebu said the rescue mission was a success as all the people who needed assistance were attended to. “We set up an assembly point at Dongola Ranch where all the people who were picked up from the farms by the choppers were offloaded. They were then given food, blankets and medical care before they were transported to the Musina show grounds, where they were given temporary shelter.” At the time of going to press, Dzebu said there were 247 people being housed at the show grounds.

Sharp increase in traffic during holidays The Beit Bridge border post recorded a sharp increase in the number of travellers who passed through during the fes tive season. According to statistics made avbailable, more than 500 000 people passed through the port of entry between 14 December last year and 7 January this year. This is about 120 000 more than the same period the previous year.
Zimbabwe’s assistant regional immigration manager in charge of the border post, Mr Charles Gwede, said they handled 229 023 travellers on the exit side, an 11% increase compared to the previous festive season. On the arrivals side, 295 488 travellers entered the country, a 35% surge compared to the previous festive season. Gwede said the highest number

Floods leave many families homeless Numerous families were left homeless and without shel ter, after many villages in the Makhado municipal area were hit by floods that swept several bridges away. In the Nzhelele area, the bridge at Mphaila had collapsed. Pupils were not attending school, while workers and teachers failed to report for duty.
Ms Rosina Ramakhokha of Sendedza said that after the floods had hit her village, she and members of her family tried to remove their furniture. Due to the force of the water, her house was severely damaged. The unemployed mother of four is living in fear because the walls of her house can collapse at any moment. The spokesperson of Makha-
do Municipality, Mr Louis Bobodi, said the municipality sympathised with the victims and would help those who were left homeless by providing food parcels and tents. He said that many families were being accommodated at churches and schools. He appealed to people who were without accommodation to report it to their ward councillors.

Police recognise gross negligence in actions A 25-year-old Tshikwarani man allegedly stabbed a Grade10 pupil to death at his home, while police officers allegedly hesitated to act outside the room. The incident took place on 9 January. It is alleged that Tuwani Fhetani (20) screamed for help from inside the accused’s room until the police officers, community members and family members of the accused could hear her voice no more. When the police finally forced the door open, they found Tuwani lifelessly on the floor. According to the information provided by the police and community members, it is alleged that Tuwani was abducted by Lufuno Madume on 8 January, while she was on her way from school. It is said that while held captive in Madume’s room, she cried all night. Madume’s mother apparently tried to notify the SAPS at Tshilwavhusiku about the incident. It is alleged that her phone calls went unanswered and she phoned again in the morning, but the police only arrived at about 08:30. According to the deceased’s family, when the police called Madume, he immediately came out, only clothed in his underwear. “People who were at the nearby SASSA re-registration site told us that they heard
someone screaming. By the time the police forced the door open, it was too late.” The provincial spokesperson for the SAPS, Brig Hangwani Mulaudzi, said that there was gross negligence on the part of the members of the SAPS who attended to the complaint. “As such, we have resorted to take serious departmental steps against them and the process is underway,” said Mulaudzi. “We view this matter in a serious light and no stone will be left unturned to get to the bottom of the matter.” Tuwani was a pupil at Tshiungulela Secondary School. She was laid to rest at Tshikwarani on Saturday. Madume appeared in the Tshilwavhusiku Magistrate’s Court last Friday, wearing jeans and a black t-shirt with the words “The future is in your Family members and relatives: From second person (right to left) Ms Maria Mathegu, Rebecca hands” written on it. The case was postponed to 30 January for further Raphulu, Ludwik Mahuwa (traditional leader), the deceased´s brother Ntshavheni Fhetani (kneeling down) and Piet Fhetani. investigation. He remains in custody.

While their neighbours were enjoying the festive season with their loved ones, the situation was totally different for the Raliavhegwa family of Mauluma village in the Tshifhawe area. On Wednesday, December 19, at about 15:00, a mysterious fire destroyed their eight-roomed house and left the family in a miserable situation. According to Mrs Johanna Raliavhegwa, she was relaxing on the veranda with two of her six children, Maureen and Lufuno, when the mysterious fire started in the main bedroom. She stated that it was Maureen who noticed some dark smoke coming from the corridor. They all went closer to check what was happening, but all they could see was that the fire had originated in the main bedroom. They were unable to do anything as the whole house was in smoke in no time. Although they screamed at the neighbours for help, the whole house was already in flames when they arrived. Looking frustrated and confused, Raliavhegwa said that they had only the clothes they were wearing at the time of the incident. The matter was reported to the police and the local municipality (Makhado) the very same day. The municipality was quick to respond to the report and they were provided with a tent, groceries and blankets the following day. She revealed that life turned bitter for her when Mrs Raliavhegwa and some of her children and grandchildren stand her husband, Mr Phineas Raliavhegwa, succumbed next to the tent supplied by the municipality to a long illness in 2004. At that stage, her mentally handicapped twins, Shepherd and Sheila, were only two years old. She used R2 500 of the R3 000 they received from the local community members to buy school uniforms for the children. According to her, the family is surviving on the child support grant for her three children and two grandchildren. The whole family of nine sleeps in a one-room shack which was used as a kitchen before the fire. Raliavhegwa said that the tent was useless during rainy days, due to leakage. People who wish to lend a helping hand to the stranded family can contact Mrs Raliavhegwa Mrs Raliavhegwa and some of her children and grandchildren pose for a photo next to what used to be her luxurious house. on 0765788225.

Uniforms for indigent pupils A local businessman, Mr David Snyman, recently donated school uniforms to the best-performing pupils of Hanyani Thomo outside Giyani. More than 100 pupils coming from improvised families smiled when they received the donations. Snyman also encouraged them to work hard in order to be successful in life. He also provided bursaries of
R20 000 each to three of the top matriculants for their registration fees. In the past, Snyman was the first person to help the rural village of Miyexe by empowering a vegetable project for rural women. He owns a series of shops around Giyani. One of the recipients of a bursary, Tsakani Maluleke, could not hold back her tears when she was told that she would get assistance from Snyman.

“I am not a man,” says young woman Ms Khuthadzo Mukwevho (25) of Khubvi Vil lage applied for an identity document at the Department of Home Affairs in Sibasa in 2007. When she received the document, it stated that she is a man. Since then, the confused young lady has been trying to have the mistake corrected, without success. “I went back to Home Affairs and completed several forms, and the officials told me to come back after three months. Their promise did not materialize and I then made the second application, hoping that I would succeed. The situation, however, remained the same.” Mukwevho further added that the inconvenience made her life difficult as she has no access to services, because she does not have a valid ID. “I do not think it should take five years to rectify a small mistake they made in a matter of seconds,” she added. She said that she was tired of visiting the Home Affairs offices because they keep on making unrealistic promises. “I am going through all this because I am illiterate and I was born into a poor family,” she said. Mukwevho, the mother of three, said that when she went to SASSA to apply for a child support grant they refused to help, “because I am a man”. The spokesperson for the Department of Home Affairs, Mr Sam Moremi, said that Mukwevho Khuthadzo Mukwevho (25) says she is not a should contact the senior officer at Makwarela and man. he would help.

The Vuwani Magistrate’s Court sentenced two men to eight years’ imprisonment each on a charge of housebreak ing and theft. The case was finalised on 4 January. The court heard that Zwingani Mamurendi (23) and Rembuwani Tshivhafhe (24) forced open the front door at Lwamondo Post Office on the night of 9 May 2008.
They entered the premises and stole a cash register to the value of R650. The electronic security company arrived only moments after the accused had left and the matter was reported to the police. Their investigations led to the arrest of Mamurendi and Tshivhafhe. The case was postponed many times, while police were still
carrying out their investigations. “This case only shows that justice always prevails for every criminal case at last,” said the spokesperson for the Vuwani police, W/O Elijah Malatjie. “It had taken quite a long time for the case to be finalised.” The two men have other similar pending cases in Mutale and Siloam.

“Work like a slave, live like a master” “Work like a slave today and live like a master in future,” said Makhado Mayor David Mutavhatsindi when he ad dressed pupils and teachers at Manaledzi High last Friday. Top achiever Farisani Ramabulana was a pupil at the school. Mutavhatsindi visited Maneledzi with his executive committee to motivate learners and to meet Ramabulana at his former school. Mutavhatsindi advised the pupils to study hard, as it is up to an individual to make it or fail in life. He said the scholars should
know what they wanted to be in life and should also take decisions that they would not regret later in life. The circuit manager of Zoutpansberg West, Ms Mashudu Makatu, said she was pleased with the commitment shown by pupils and teachers. She urged them to work extra hard in order to improve the results of the circuit. “It is up to you to make us proud. Only hard work will make you achieve the best in life,” she said. The principal, Mr George Mathivha, said there was muti
that could help any pupil to achieve better results. “Pupils and teachers had to sweat it out in order to reap the rewards at the end of the year,” he added. When addressing the pupils, Farisani Ramabulana, who obtained seven distinction and passed mathematics and science with 100%, advised the pupils to find successful people as role models. “Having role models in life usually helps a person to be able to draw a picture of where he or she wants to be in future,” he added.

Tension over selection of house owners The Midoroni Sanco, Cllr Masindi Rasimphi (Ward 25), and some members from the com munity were locked in a long battle of words over the selection of suitable beneficiaries to receive RDP houses. The meeting was held last Thursday at Makhanani courtyard at Midoroni. The Midoroni branch of Sanco, as well as community members, maintains that the first list was compiled by the community forum, which consisted of Sanco, the ward committee and traditional leaders. The community forum identified people whose living conditions suggested that they needed RDP houses. They then submitted the list to Cllr Rasimphi, who went to assess the situation of the selected persons. “She said some of the people whose names appeared on the list didn’t qualify, because they were still living in their parents’ homes,” said traditional leader Mr Joseph Muthuvha. There are allegations that names were added to the original list through telephonic communication by some top members within the community forum on the night before the registration. Muthuvha denied these allegations and said that only the names of four people had been replaced by those who were found to be in dire need of an RDP house as their living conditions suggested so. “It is my feeling that the community forum had fairly compiled the list at the end of day,” said Muthuvha. “But I am not sure if all those whose names were removed from the list are satisfied with the forum’s decision,” he said. Thabo Mamthubi, who has an empty stand, is currently living on his father’s property where he works as a shopkeeper in a spaza shop. “As to how my name was removed, I cannot tell. It makes me sad, but let them have all those RDP houses for their relatives and friends. ” Several persons whose names were on the list had to go to Tshikwarani to make photocopies of their identity books and had to have them certified at the Tshilwavhusiku police station some 21 km away, while the registration team from the Makhado Municipality and the Provincial
Government and Housing department continued to help those around. Midoroni Sanco chairperson Mr James Delekisa lambasted Cllr Rasimphi for her alleged failure to communicate with the community forum and inform residents on time that they should have certified copies of their IDs and those of their children ready. “She must try to communicate important messages to the people effectively and timeously,” said Delekisa. “For instance, many people ended up not registering because they had no certified copies of their IDs ready. Information was not communicated to them on time. Some of these people work on farms.” However, Rasimphi explained that all parties had agreed that no house would be built on an empty stand which somebody had quickly sought on learning about the RDP project. “People should understand that we can’t leave out the poorest of the poor and recommend that an RDP house be built for someone who is presently living in a four-roomed house,” Rasimphi said. “There are conditions where seven people are sharing a small structure of a house and whose present living conditions meet the standards required by the housing department for allocation of RDP houses. We feel that we have to prioritise those ones first.”
Mr Joseph Muthuvha says the selection of suitable beneficiaries of RDP houses went well at the end of day.

The Sanco Limpopo provincial organizing secretary and stalwart politician, Mr James Delekisa, says the Vhembe Regional Council meeting which was supposed to have taken place on Sunday, will take place on 3 February. The meeting, which was supposed to have been a preparatory meeting for the Vhembe Regional Conference, had to be postponed because of the heavy rains. Delekisa said many of the district’s roads were damaged by the heavy rains that fell in the area over the past two weeks. Branches, even those preparing to launch soon, are invited to the big meeting. “We apologize profusely for the postponement. It was beyond our control and we know all were prepared for the meeting, which we believe was going to unite the whole district. We are very positive that nothing will stop the people from working as a united front,” said Delekisa. He said communities in the district were faced with many challenges in terms of service delivery, which could not be tackled when people were still divided. The meeting is scheduled to take place at the Tshilidzi Muleya (left) poses with Johann Hammann of Hammann Indoor Sport Centre in Thohoyandou. Enquiries can be made with Delekisa at 076 Moosa Incorporated, after they pledged to assist Tshilidzi financially for four years. 982 5677.

School roof leaks for nearly 17 years “Comfort in the classroom” is a phrase which eludes the pupils at Jaji Secondary School each rainy season since they have to study in classes with roofs that leak profusely. The leaking roofs are causing damage to the school’s text books, including the new stock delivered in November 2012. Teachers are frustrated by the circumstances and they can hardly stand in the rain under the leaking roof and continue to teach. When Limpopo Mirror visited the school in Madobi village near Giyani last Wednesday, it was discovered that pupils had to use umbrellas to protect themselves from the rain, which pours down from the leaking roof. They also took turns to mop the water when the dam became too large in the classroom. “I am doing Grade12 this year,” said one pupil, “The situation has been like this since I arrived at the school some four years ago. We have hardly learned a thing since it started raining last week. Do you think that your coming here and snapping our pictures will change the situation for the better? I doubt it.” Several teachers spoke with the reporter, on Teachers at Jaji Secondary School, Ms Maria Mahlaule and Ms Glory Maluleke, mop up a dam condition of anonymity. They all explained how the of rain water off the floor. school tries to highlight the problem to the district office of the department of education each year to at least see that the problem is addressed adequately. “Inspectors always come when it is not raining, do their assessment and leave,” a teacher said. “At one stage, they promised to send a contractor to fix the roofing as a matter of urgency. But nobody arrived to fix the problem and the condition of the leaking roof is adversely affecting both teachers and learners.” On the surface, all the classrooms’ roofs appear neat and in good condition, making it hard to believe the situation is so dire. The representative of the parents of the pupils, Ms Rhulani Mphathudi, said that she had been notifying and reminding the provincial office of the department of education about the leaking roof since 2007. “They said there were 105 schools who had similar problems and we should wait for our turn on the list,” said a worried Mphathudi. “Now the situation is very bad. Even the newly delivered text books were wet.
Teachers cannot teach; learners cannot learn. All books and learners’ register are wet. We ask our government to help us.” The Vhembe regional chairperson for Cope, Cllr Geoffry Tshibvumo, has criticised the government for not acting timeously to this problem. “Cope is calling upon the department of education to attend to this crisis urgently,” Tshibvumo said. The spokesperson of the department of education, Mr Pat Kgomo, indicated that it was a difficult task for the department to address the problems of all affected schools in a single day. “The problem with you journalists is that you come up with an issue today and another journalist visits another school the following day, after seeing my comment,” said Mr Kgomo. “The infrastructure backlog is huge (as) there are many schools with similar problems.”

Unique touring club for Lwamondo’s elderly Are the accomplices also guilty? Theirs is a club with a differ ence. The Lwamondo-Mapate Touring Club is comprised of more than 100 elderly people from the villages of Mapate and Lwamondo in the Vhembe District. Formed in 2008, the members have already visited many towns and places of touristic interest all over the country. The leader of the club, Johannes Mahase, said the idea of the club came in 2008 when he and a few friends met and discussed how they could keep themselves active after retiring from the working
environment and to make the most out of their time. “As elderly people, we feel forgotten and all on our own most of the time. We feel isolated and the isolation could lead to severe stress if not attended to. We felt we should come together and discuss things that affect our lives and how we could improve our lives. Touring came as one of the ways to go,” said Mahase. He said their club was not like other stokvels, where money is exchanged. “Ours is about being together as elderly people. We only plan for trips and we pay for
them ourselves, mostly from our grant monies. We go out together and that is it,” he said. He said that, so far, they had visited places like Cape Town and the Kruger National Park, among the many places they had travelled. “We have big plans as elderly people. Who knows, we might even go outside the borders of the country. We are united and if we decide on something, we work towards achieving it. We are inviting all elderly people who feel left out to please join us, so that they can enjoy life like before,” he said.

No time for Black Leopards to relax While the other Absa Premiership League teams are on holiday due to the Africa Cup of Nations tournament, the situation is totally different for Black Leopards. According to the club’s general manager, Mr Samuel Khaphathe, it is business as usual in their camp. As part of their preparations for the remaining part of the season, Leopards are now in the Tanzanian capital city, Dar Es Salam, for a training camp.
They left the country on Monday and are expected to spend two solid weeks in that country. Khaphathe revealed that they want to finish their league programme within the top-eight bracket, saying nothing will stop them from achieving their set goal. When asked whether the departure of the former team’s head coach, Mr Ian Palmer, would affect the team’s performance, Khaphathe said that the caretaker-coach, Mr Abel Makhubele, was a knowledgeable man. Palmer’s relationship with the Limpopo outfit came to an abrupt end early this month. It did not take long for Palmer to find new employment as he soon joined the Cape Town-based National First Division side, Santos, as head coach. When asked whether they were intending to beef up their current squad before the window for the registration of players closed at the end of this month, Khaphathe said that their current team was well balanced. Leopards will play their next league match against Bidvest Wits at the Peter Mokaba Stadium on Wednesday, 13 February. Lidoda Duvha are currently lying in the 12th spot on the log with 17 points accumulated from 17 matches. Although Leopards will play against an amateur side, Cape Town All Stars, in their last-32 match for the Nedbank Cup, Khaphathe said that they wouldl not underestimate them. The last 32 matches for Black Leopards’ general manager, Mr Samuel the Nedbank Cup will be played over the weekend Khaphathe. of 23 to 25 February. Swimming

Certificates for Youth Against Crime volunteers About 50 young people in the Mutale area who volunteered to fight against crime during the holidays received certificates of appreciation at a function held at Idani Park near Mutale shortly after the holidays. They also received accolades for their
work at the Nwanedi-Luphephe Resort and Idani Park. The Mutale Youth Against Crime is the brainchild of Mutale’s social crime coordinator, W/O Saul “Dakaliaswa” Munzhelele. According to him, since the inception of the project in 2000, Mutale
has been a safer place to visit during the festive season. “We went to various schools, communities and churches around Mutale, calling upon young people who wanted to fight against crime during the festive season. We were also worried that Mutale town was dirty and we wanted to clean it. We also conducted a door-to-door campaign at Tshilamba, Phalama and the Mulodi villages,” he added. Munzhelele was over the moon to learn about the success of the campaign. A resident of Dzimauli-Tshibvumo village near Mutale was arrested for dealing in dagga, while more than 10 illegal Zimbabweans were deported back to their country. Ms Shakandinne Nnyadzani, a former Miss Mutale SAPS, said it was her wish to mobilise young people to act against crime. She said she was pleased to find out that young people in Mutale were W/O Saul “Dakaliaswa” Munzhelele (far left) handed over certificates to the members of the volunteering to clean Mutale Youth against Crime project. Basel and All Stars in Vhembe derby Basel and the struggling Phungu All Stars will meet in a Safa Second Division match at the Makwarela Stadium tomorrow afternoon. Phungo must win the match to keep their hopes of escaping the relegation axe at the end of the season alive. Things are fast going from bad to worse in their camp. They have been giving away league points since the new season started four months ago. Their enthusiastic fans left the Makhado Eltivillas grounds with sore hearts last Saturday after Stars lost 1-2 to Modimolle Aces. After realizing that the red lights were flickering for them, Phungo All Stars recently acquired the services of 15 new players. Most of their new recruits are expected to form part of their starting line-up against Basel FC tomorrow. Phungo must keep a watchful eye on the Basel killer-strikers, Walter Ramulondi and Louis Chauke, or else they will regret it. Rospa United will entertain Winners Park at the Malamulele Stadium. The spirit is high in the camp of Rospa United are holding Blue Rocks to a 1-1 draw at the Nkowankowa Stadium in Tzaneen last Saturday. Makwarela Development Stars have lodged a complaint with the Safa Vhembe Regional Football Association, following allegations of match fixing by the match officials. Incidents which prompted the Stars to file a complaint with the league took place during the semi-final and final matches for the SAFA Vhembe Total Challenge Cup at the Makwarela Stadium and Univen Stadium two weeks ago. Makwarela Development Stars lost 0-1 to United Artists in the final of the competition at the Univen Stadium on Sunday, 13 January. The referee who officiated during the final, Mr Phumudzo Munyai, was an assistant referee during the semifinal match between United Artists and Western Stars at the Makwarela Stadium the previous day. Development Stars felt aggrieved over the referee selectors’ decision to appoint one referee to officiate for both the semifinal and final matches of the lucrative competition. In their letter of complaint, Development Stars demanded to know from the league whether there was a shortage of competent referees, to the extent that they were forced to appoint one referee for the last two stages of the competition. In an interview with Limpopo Mirror earlier this week, the chairperson of Development Stars, Mr Shakes Mudanalwo, stated that they did not want to complicate things by mentioning that most of Munyai’s decisions were questionable as they did not have video footage to substantiate their case. “All we want to know from the league is how they justified the selectors’ decision to appoint Munyai in the semifinal and final matches, as if the region has a shortage of referees” said Mudanalwo. The league’s competition committee chairman, Mr Mulimisi Muneri, acknowledged that they had received an official complaint from Stars.
