The death of well-known Limpopo musician and dancer Takalani Mapholi, more popularly known as Jodi Anna, has once more focused the spotlight on the plight of depressed musicians who have taken to suicide as a way out.

Mapholi’s body was found hanging from an overhead bridge next to the Caltex garage in Thohoyandou on Thursday, 17 March 2022.

The incident nearly brought the busy Thohoyandou main road to a standstill after a learner from the area alerted the community and the police showed up.

Jodi Anna was known for producing hits such as I Withdraw. He now joins the ranks of well-known personalities such as the late rapper Riky Rick Makhado and actor Patrick Shai, who both recently ended their own lives.

Jodi Anna also did a song with his famous fellow musician and friend Mizo Phyll, called Keep The Fire Burning.

Ironically, the song encourages others not to give up in the face of despair and hang themselves - no matter how bad things get.

Tributes started pouring in after Jodi Anna’s tragic death was confirmed.

Mizo Phyll told the media that he was heartbroken about it. “The creative arts industry is doomed. Why do we have

to bury each other on a weekly basis?

It is one burial after another, and the worst part is that they are not natural deaths. This is a clear sign that there is a problem here. Artists are humans and face depression and have no one to talk to. We need to come together as artists and have an awareness on this. Another friend, Mr Ziggy Takalani, who is popularly known as ‘Homicide’ in music circles, said he had not accepted Jodi Anna’s death yet. “Anna was a good person to work with and a friend to everyone. He was a master of his craft and destined for greater things. We will surely miss his laughter and his talents,” he said.

The family asked to be given space to mourn their loved one.

Mental health is fast becoming a serious problem, also in local society.

In 2021, the South African Anxiety and Depression Group reported that approximately 23 people in South Africa die every day as a result of suicide.

Sister of former Venda President passes away

By Kaizer Nengovhela The Ravele royal council is mourning the death of VhoMakhadzi Masindi Ravele Nelwalani, who died on Sunday, 13 March, at Tshituni Tshaha Mapila after a long illness. Nelwalani was the sister of former Venda President Frank Ravele.

Nelwalani (86) was described as a community builder and mother of the nation because of her devotion to helping the communities without compromise. “She was a person of love and used to give us advice on how to lead the communities,” said her son, Patrick Nelwalani.

Vhamusanda Vho-Ramaano Ressouw Ravele described Nelwalani as “an angel who brought her children up with love and affection”. He said that the death of the beloved gogo had left a big void in the family. “She was a visionary and

a good leader who loved all people without discriminating or taking sides. She was everything to us and our greatest source of inspiration.

For me she was like a friend and not a granny, because we shared ideas. She was one of the veterans in the family and it becomes very painful when we lose icons like her.

The hearts of the whole community and traditional council are heavy, but we wipe our tears because we know that she served the Lord every minute of her life,” he said.

Ravele encouraged all to follow the good example set by VhoMakhadzi. “She had a vision to complete the house of God. I urge all of you, especially the children, to complete the project, so that her soul can rest in peace.”

Vho-Makhadzi Nelwalani was buried at Tshiendeulu Barota in Levubu on Friday.

In a number of rural villages, civic organisations and traditional leaders do not see eye to eye and because of this, many innocent residents are often caught in the crossfire.

One such community is Thononda village outside Thohoyandou. Thononda is one of the 77 villages under the Tshivhase Royal Authority. The civic has its own funeral-levy register wherein they have been keeping book of residents’ contributions for years.

However, things changed slightly for Thononda residents when the traditional leader started his own funeral book in addition to the old one, and those who do not contribute to his book are refused the right to bury their loved ones at the local cemetery.

Mr Mashudu Matamela told the media that when his sister Naledzani Matamela passed away on 13 March this year, the family was not allowed entry to the cemetery to lay her to rest.

“We followed all the protocols, but we were told we would not be allowed to bury our sister [in the village cemetery] because she was married somewhere else and had not contributed to the village funeral funds, which is not true. It hurts us so much to be made scapegoats in personal fights. Our chief is not fair and surrounds himself with the wrong people who are not advising him well. It must be known that we paid the R2 000 and that we would like to see this come to an end. No other family should go through what we experienced,” he said.

In 2019, Maxwell Muntswu, who is paralyzed and bound to a wheelchair, became another crime statistic in his village.

Dambuwo village, situated in Ramukhuba outside Vuwani, is a fairly new section in the area that has already been rocked by theft that hampers construction.

Muntswu (39) lost more than R20 000 worth of building materials that year after thieves cut the fence at the back of his yard and stole everything that he intended to use to construct his new house. The culprits have never been found.

The incident has left him with a burning determination to fight crime at all costs. On Monday, 21 March 2022, Muntswu became an overnight hero in his community when he and a friend of his thwarted a theft in his village.

“My friend and I were on our way from another part of the village at around 01:00 that morning when we noticed a car driving with its lights switched off. It did not need an expert to figure out that something fishy was taking place. We tried to stop the bakkie, but instead of stopping, the culprits sped off

at great speed. We gave chase and managed to overtake them and stop in front of their bakkie to block their way,” he relayed the incident to the media.

“With no way out, the thieves made off on foot, abandoning the bakkie, which was loaded with building materials. The police reacted quickly and arrived at the scene in no time, and the bakkie was towed to the police’s car pound.”

This was not the first time Muntswu put his own life on the line. In 2017, he became the shield that saved his wife and children’s lives when armed robbers pumped 16 bullets into his body. He spent nearly two years in hospital and recovered, but he will be paralysed and wheelchair bound because of it for the rest of his life.

As a victim of crime, Muntswu has adopted a “no-nonsense” stand against crime and says he will do everything in his power to stop it from happening.

The local traditional leader, Chief Nemulalo Ramukhuba, praised Muntswu and his friend’s heroic deeds and called on all his subjects to follow suit but to also be vigilant in the face of crime. “It

is very painful to see my subjects suffer at the hands of criminals.

These people save the little they get in order to put a roof over their heads, but when thieves strike, they take whatever they can lay their hands on. My people are left helpless as a result. Our area was

better off when we had patrollers at night. The moment these thieves realise that no-one is looking, they take over. We cannot just sit by and watch with folded arms. We will sit down as a community and come up with a plan to address this matter,” Ramukhuba said.

Still not sure whether ANC members will step aside

Godfrey Nkhanedzeni Mawela, the mayor of Musina Municipality, and Avhashoni Steven Tshifhango, the former mayor of Thulamela Local Municipality, were both requested by the ANC’s provincial structures to indicate whether they would voluntarily step aside. Tshifhango is

currently a member of the mayoral committee (MMC) in the Vhembe District Municipality.

Mawela and Tshifhango form part of a group of ANC office bearers in Limpopo who were asked to inform the ANC Limpopo’s provincial committee whether they were adhering to the party’s step-aside policy. If not, their cases will be referred to the National Working Committee of the ANC for a decision.

On Tuesday, no certainty existed whether the two had agreed to step aside. The ANC’s provincial spokesperson, Donald Selamolela, could not confirm whether the two had stepped aside, saying he was still in a meeting.

“It is the party’s standard policy to inform the members accused of crimes and court cases whether they are intending to step aside or not, and if they are not complying, their matter will be referred to the National Working Committee of the party. We understand that if the two are stepping aside, for example to the mayor of Musina, it might affect the service delivery, but we have put in place [measures] that will help us to deliver services to the communities,” said Selamolela.

Nine-year-old Naledzi Thojena Manyuha of Madombidzha is determined to become a top ballet dancer, despite the challenges she faces.

Naledzi was selected to compete at the South African Dance Festival, where she won a silver medal in the Faerie category in April 2021.

In August that same year, she was selected to compete at the American Dance Award Festival (ADA), where she won the American Dance gold medal and an Ultimate Special Challenge Award, which automatically entered her to compete in Florida, USA in July this year.

Naledzi developed her love of ballet just by watching it on television from a very young age. Her passion shows in her uniqueness in movement and attention to detail. She easily captivates attention and communicates with her audience through her distinct technique, as if inviting them into her world.

She says that dancing teaches one to work hard, be disciplined and stay focused. “I fell in love with the sport and became interested in joining. As I continued to do it and exceeded in it, I fell even more in love with it, to the point where it became my passion,” the young ballerina said. “This is the first time I qualified to go to the games, and I hope that I will be able to participate.”

Ballet is, however, an expensive sport, and Naledzi needs financial support to bring her closer to her dream of competing at the competition. Violence in Vhembe keeps rising with yet another fatal stabbing

By Silas Nduvheni The number of violent crimes in the Vhembe region keeps rising as yet another young man was stabbed to death at a tavern last weekend.

At the time, the spokesperson for the Thulamela Municipality, Mr Nndwamato Tshiila, said that the construction of the bridge was almost done and would be handed to the public in August the same year.

When Mr Tshiila was asked about the progress of the bridge last week via WhatsApp, he did not respond. The message was read, but no response was forthcoming. Shortly after Limpopo Mirror’s enquiry, Tshiila posted a message concerning the bridge on the municipality’s Facebook page.

He wrote: “Thulamela Municipality would like to acknowledge the public outcry about construction of Lambani bridge which was brought to the attention of the municipality through Facebook alert.

The community liaison officer of the project, Ms Mbavhalelo Ramatamba, responded to questions by saying that the bridge was not yet finished. “We are left with just touch-ups. I think we will be done by the end of this month. We were delayed by rain,” she said.

SANCO chairperson Mr Takalani Musetsho said he was not happy with the structure of the bridge. “I guess we will just have to accept it as it is. We are surprised that they are still working on it, because they should have finished it a long time ago,” he said.

Steve Munyamela, who is the chairperson of the project-steering committee, said that he was not satisfied with the way things were done. “At first the project was delayed and some of the delays were caused by the municipality, but we pushed them to work harder. At least they are now trying to fix their mistakes,” he said. He said he was only happy because 55 local workers had been employed during the project.

Concern about growing use of hard drugs in Nzhelele

This follows a sting operation conducted by the Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation Unit and members of the Tactical Response Team.

Marijuana, crystal meth, illicit cigarettes and Rizzlas were found by the Hawks during a successful operation conducted in the Nzhelele.

The trio had apparently been on the Hawks’ radar for a while before their arrest. According to a media statement released by the Hawks, the first suspect was caught selling crystal meth and dagga at his spaza shop, while the other two, who are alleged to be a couple, were found in possession of crystal meth at

their house. The estimated value of the seized drugs is R10 000.

The suspects, Mukhethwa Mashamba (23), Ronny Mamatsinga (37) and Rofhiwa Mambona (33), were granted R2 000 bail each after they first appeared in the Dzanani District Court on Friday, 11 March. The matter has been postponed until 2 June.

Anti-crime activist Mr Joshua Simango of the South African Youth Against Crime (SAYAC) said that the high usage of crystal meth in the Nzhelele valley gives him sleepless nights. “It seems as if every young person around here is sniffing this thing (crystal meth) and it is becoming a problem because it is expensive. Rabambukwa started his music career with a local band, who called themselves Samson and the New Stars, but the band has since disbanded. He then joined Calvin Maemu and had a short collaboration with Zozo as lead guitarist before he went solo in 2005.

His first album, Vhugevhenga, was released in 2006, followed

by Vhuhovheleli in 2009, Mashalele in 2012, Tshifheti ndi shaka in 2015, Tshivenda tsha hashu in 2018, and, of course, Pride in 2022.

The album, he says, is about people who do not achieve their goals in life because they try to be someone else. “Some people try to copy the lifestyle of others in order to impress the public.

The best thing is to live your own life and be thankful for what you have. If we all live an honest life, it will be much easier to achieve our goals because we won’t be competing against each other. I felt I had to put this message in a song to get it out there.”

Majiga was born in Ha-Mashau, outside Louis Trichardt, but grew up in Ha-Mutsha near Thohoyandou.

His love of music started at an early age when he used to sing and play on drums made from old oil cans. His musical breakthrough came in 1997 when he attended a church crusade for the Assembly of God at Ha-Mutsha village. He was singing along with

the church choir when one of the members heard his beautiful voice and invited him to join the choir.

This multi-instrumentalist, vocalist, dancer, producer, and sound engineer has also worked with top producers and artists such as Jabu Nkabinde, Andy Masiye and Solly Moholo. His talents, however, are not limited to music performances.

The man can apparently act too and has featured in television drama series such as Muvhango and Generations.

Humbulani also realised that one must be adaptive in business, not relying on a single business model. “You can always entertain more community members, family, or friends with an outdoor movie screen than you can with an indoor theatre system,” he says. This also meant that he had to invest in different screen sizes. “Our screens range from 9 to 40 feet in width, so it doesn't matter if you're looking to screen a movie with your family of five or if it’s a couple of hundred guests, we have an outdoor movie screen for the occasion,” he explains.

The endeavour is also about

more than running a business and making a profit. Humbulani has a soft spot for disadvantaged rural communities and often presents movie nights at such locations without charging. He took his Movie Mania nights to areas such as Ha-Mashamba, Waterval and Masingita Crossing at Malamulele.

The dynamic entrepreneur’s efforts have not gone unnoticed. This year he was nominated for a Founder of the Year Award (FOYA) in the 30-year-old-plus category. FOYA is designed to recognise and appreciate young founders who are contributing to the African continent's economic growth. The winners will be announced later this year during a prestigious function in Kenya.

Kamogelo believes his talent can help people

By Thembi Siaga Kamogelo Makgothoma (23) is a self-taught praise poet from Ngovhela village in Thohoyandou who recites his poetry in English and Sepedi. He believes that this talent will help people to deal better with emotional strain.

Born and bred in Bochum in Ga Maleboho, Makgothoma fell in love with poetry at the tender age of 11.

“I started writing poetry through a buddies clubs and the Foundation for Learning Campaign. My former primary teachers Mr Sathekge, Mrs Phooko and Mrs Mathiba were the people who inspired my work.

They believed in my talent and gave me various opportunities to recite poetry.”

Makgothoma sharpened his skills by performing for his classmates during arts and culture classes.

He also attended various poetry competitions. He says that being a praise poet enables him to address burning issues. “I want to reveal the true feeling of the things that hurt people inside; the things people are afraid to speak about out loud.

So, through my work, I am able to speak for the voiceless on issues like GBV, xenophobia, or alcohol and drug abuse.”

He uses his talent as a source of income. “Being a poet also helps me to put food on the table. I perform for people at weddings, parties and other events. I am one of the most booked local poets. I get booked every month,” he said. “Last year,

I paid tribute to the late secretary-general of the SACP (South African Communist Party), Martin Thembisile (Chris) Hani in front of President Cyril Ramaphosa. In 2020, I travelled and performed in East London and I’m working on releasing a CD by the end of this month.”

His latest audio poem is titled Mmapaseka, and tells the story of a young couple who sacrifice everything for each other to make their relationship work. However, they break up eventually because of the challenges both of them are faced with during their relationship.

The station’s programme manager, Ms Sharon Ravele, said that they were working with the traditional leaders, businesspeople, different structures, and municipalities to try and address urgent needs. She said that they had urged people to come on board and donate if they could.

Ravele mentioned that the Vhembe region experienced serious water challenges. “As we live by the station’s pay offline, Rina nwi misi yothe (we care), the station celebrated its 57th birthday by contributing to providing a water solution to a village identified and voted for by listeners,” she said.

She said that Phalaphala FM was determined to make a real difference and reconnect with communities in areas where the primary audience of the station resided. Ravele said that the boreholes would leave a memorable experience to the listeners and different communities.

Ravele said that many of the villages in Vhembe experienced water shortages and residents had no water taps in their homes.

Initiatives such as the one Phalaphala FM has embarked on help to alleviate such water challenges.

The campaign was driven on-air to get a list of communities that are in need of water sources and water supply. The listeners were urged to send the names of their proposed communities to the station. The station then verified the authenticity of the need of the communities proposed by the listeners and selected a community that qualified to receive the borehole.

Ravele said that the community members at Tshipise Mubvumoni had been delighted to receive a borehole after many years of struggling without water.

“This is to ensure that the community has access to clean water. For years now, members of the community were forced to pay R5 per 20-litre container to people with boreholes,” she said.

She urged the community to take care of the borehole. She expressed her concern over people who vandalise or tamper with boreholes.

“I am appealing to everybody in the community to safeguard the borehole,” she said.

This ambitious radio DJ, who joined Musina FM in 2014, is one of the border-town community radio station’s most experienced and long-serving presenters. Born and bred at Ha-Makuya Khavhambe village, Dzakani recalled how his position at Musina FM came about. “I was travelling in a taxi when I heard that Musina FM was looking for a producer. I went to the radio station that same day and approached the station manager, who invited me for an interview the following day. The interview went well, and I was immediately

appointed. I worked as a producer for only two weeks before I was given more responsibilities as a presenter.”

Asked what keeps him going seven days a week, non-stop, Dzakani said: “Radio is my life, and nothing can separate me from the airwaves. I love my work wholeheartedly, and I feel fulfilled when I am behind the microphone. That is the secret to success - you have to enjoy and love what you do. It is the most important thing in life. If you do, success will follow.”

Dzakani has qualifications in basic ambulance assistance, social auxiliary and computer literacy, and advises aspiring young radio presenters to value education. “If something happens to my radio career, I can still go out and hunt for a job with ease because I have qualifications.”

The Keystone Medical Group believes routine mammograms are crucial to the early detection of breast cancer and, as part of its mission to ensure safe and healthy communities, the state-of-the-art Mobile Breast Cancer Screening Unit will be heading to Louis Trichardt this month.

“Detecting breast cancer early can reduce the treatment burden and lead to a complete cure. The mobile breast-cancer screening unit is the only one of its kind in South Africa, aiming to make mammographic screening and breast ultrasounds accessible to all women, both private and medical-aid patients,” says radiologist Dr Nikoli van Zyl. Van Zyl says the mobile unit

has proved very successful in providing women around the country with a safe, out-of-hospital alternative.

“We have seen a dramatic drop in the number of women going for their annual screenings, following the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic. The mobile unit, however, provides a safe environment for women to receive preventative services that they may have postponed due to the pandemic. In 2021 alone, we managed to perform more than 2 000 mammograms with the mobile screening unit during our initiatives around the country,” Van Zyl explains.

Van Zyl says since February they have visited towns such as Komatipoort, Malelane, Mbombela, Hazyview, Hoedspruit, Tzaneen and are now headed for the Makhado area, as women in these areas ordinarily would have to drive long distances to receive mammographic screenings.

are not readily available. We have, therefore, decided to make this mammography service more accessible and we will be visiting various towns in the Mpumalanga Province, where both mammography and breast ultrasound studies will be available as part of our continuous fight against breast cancer. Here we will offer world-class breast cancer screening services, performed by highly qualified professional female staff,” she says.

Van Zyl says an annual mammogram is recommended to all women over the age of 40, while a breast ultrasound can be done at any age.

Dream of having an own conference centre finally comes true for LCA

The internationally acclaimed professor Rudo Mathivha was guest speaker at the official opening of the venue. Prof Mathivha is an intensive-care medicine specialist at the Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital in Johannesburg.

“The hall structure actually went up in 1992, when we laid the foundation, [and put up the] frames and the roof.

Hundreds of members of the Lemba Cultural Association (LCA), coming from all corners of the country, gathered at Sweetwaters Farm near Elim on Saturday for the historic opening of the association’s new conference hall.

The hall is a significant milestone for the LCA, an association that was established in 1948. It represents the Lemba community, who are often referred to as the “Black Jews” because of their historic links to the Jewish culture. The LCA is based in Limpopo, where the majority of the Lemba community resides.

According to the general secretary of the association, Mr Phineas Malima, this is a dream come true and reason to celebrate. “After 74 years, we are in a new dawn. All our events, including annual conferences, used to be held either in tents or in the open,” he said.

He recalled the day, 13 February 2019, when the project to complete the hall started. Without proper building materials and with limited funds, they had to make do with whatever was available. Malima praised the LCA executives for being committed and focused during this process.

Prof Mathivha said that they wanted to remain significant in pursuing their culture. “The vision was to build a Lemba cultural centre consisting of a community hall, school, museum, a temple and ablution blocks. We want to have a Hebrew school, but also a functional academic school, accommodation facilities and a hotel to generate income,” she said.

The association’s president, Pandelani Mutenda, said the completion of the venue was a milestone in the Lembas’ nationwide history. “I acknowledge that it was not by my power and the executive, but God who intervened in making us united to finish building this venue. Today, I am one of the happiest people on earth because our centre conference hall is finally open,” he said.

Tshimangadzo wants to empower the youth by teaching them how to produce own crops

By Thembi Siaga Tshimangadzo Mudau is a young farmer from Manamani village in Thohoyandou with a passion for agriculture. He has grown his own farming enterprise from subsistence to commercial farming and now wants to impart his knowledge to the next generation.

Mudau (29) is one of the founders of Vhuthu Poultry and Farming, which was established in 2017 when he partnered with NG Masiavhula. He has employed eight permanent and two temporary workers from the community. His biggest dream, however, is to see more young people partaking and

growing in eagerness to learn about farming.

“My main aim is to educate youngsters, such as high school agricultural students, and provide experimental training to those who have completed their courses at universities and TVET colleges,” he said.

Mudau, who is originally from Ha-Kutama in Maebani developed a love for farming after Mr Braam Cronjé, owner of Jan Tak Farm in the Albasini Dam area, approached him and nine other local farmers and provided them with technical support and training on hydroponic farming. “Mr Cronjé motivated me to pursue a career in farming and played a tremendous role through

his workshops, training and support.

It really encouraged me to do more and dream big as a young commercial farmer,” he said.

Three years later (in 2016), Mudau started planting vegetables in his backyard. Many families and schools in the area benefitted from his produce and he also managed to supply to other potential suppliers. “I really started developing a passion for farming then, but the lack of access to credit made it difficult for me to invest in expanding my business.” That was when he decided to relocate to Manini village in search of land to plant his crops. “There I started expanding my dreams and went from garden farming to commercial farming when I met NG Masiavhula.” Masiavhula owns 18 hectares of land and Mudau started collaborating with him.

Mudau plants cash crops such as butternuts, cabbages, tomatoes, green beans, sweet peppers, and hot peppers, which he sells to the local people, tuck shops, hawkers and the international market. “I also partner with the Department of Education to donate awards to students who work hard in order to motivate others to also do the same,” he said.

One of Mudau’s students, Foroma Tsholofelo from Tompi Seleka College of Agriculture, completed her practical training last month. “I have attained more knowledge about the farming industry and the skills [needed]. My goal is to start my own farming enterprise one day, but first I have to get the right training from someone else who has experience and knowledge,” she said.

“When the bus breaks down along the way, we are told to find our own means of transport for the rest of the journey to Louis Trichardt or back home. Does the company have no regard for its commuters anymore? Most of us buy month tickets that cost us R518 each. Now we are forced to dig even deeper into our pockets, as we have to hike the rest of the way to work or back to our homes when the bus breaks down,” he said.

Another commuter, who has been using Magwaba’s services for more than a decade, said that “Magwaba’s management should really try to fix their buses. The ones we usually get on run on worn-out tyres and the roofs are leaking. We always smell danger boarding such un-roadworthy buses, but we do not have a choice as it is the only bus service operating between Thohoyandou and Louis Trichardt.”

The commuters are also calling on the Limpopo Department of Transport and Community Safety to send traffic officials to inspect the conditions under which Magwaba Bus Services operates and to allow other bus services to use the same route too. “Once there are two or more different buses on this route, the service from bus operators will be much better,” said another passenger.

Mr Mike Maringa from the Limpopo Department of Transport and Community Safety said the department was always worried about the roadworthiness of public-transport operators.

“We have regular roadblocks where we check the roadworthiness of the vehicles. Vehicles that are not roadworthy are impounded,” said Maringa.

He advised bus operators who might encounter challenges to apply for permits to operate between Thohoyandou to Louis Trichardt to call the department for assistance.

Sigh of relief for Pfano as he secures sponsorship

By Thembi Siaga Twenty-three-year-old Pfano Ungedzani from Tshidzini village near Thohoyandou is breathing a long sigh of relief. Last month, the talented long- and short-distance runner was signed by Tuks Athletics Club to compete under their banner in the 800m U/23 category. The problem was that Pfano still had no sponsor to help him cover all the costs involved with being a full-time athlete.

Luckily, a new sponsor stepped to the fore, which means that Pfano can now concentrate on what he does best – to run.

Traderoot Active, an impact-investment project led by Traderoot Technologies, saved the day for the young athlete. Traderoot Active enables and encourages participation in sporting events and activities, and raises funds for recognised organisations that support and sustain sports development and children’s education. Pfano was selected as the company’s first sponsorship recipient for 2022.

This did not come easily for him, though. Pfano took a full two years to find a sponsor. “I tried interviews on radio stations like Phalaphala FM and Univen FM, but with no success. I even tried to ask for assistance from local businesspeople, but no-one would help me,” he said.

Yet, despite many stumbling blocks in his way, Pfano refused to give up

on his dreams.

He reached out to Traderoot Active through their social-media channels and was invited to Cape Town for an evaluation process. “I was surprised when I received their invitation to Cape Town. Upon my arrival, they bought me running shoes and training sneakers. After two weeks, I was gifted with a complete running kit. I am very excited to find myself under Traderoot Active, as they are helping me to fulfil my dreams,” he said.

“While I’m running the 800m, 50km, 32km, 10km, and 5km, I push myself to get to the top three or top 10 positions. My wish is to put Traderoot Active and Venda on the map. I also want to find myself running international races.”

Pfano was met by the company’s programme director, Mr Brett Dungan, who gave him a warm welcome. “After meeting up and getting to understand Pfano’s basic needs as a runner, we came to the agreement to work together, in order to achieve the goals that would benefit everyone in moving forward,” Dungan said.

According to him, Pfano is proactive in seeking out their products.

“He struck me as a go-getter with passion and dreams. We felt that the brand and his talents would be an amazing fit. The expectation is simply that he has the ability to reach his goals and fulfil his dreams.”

The Louis Trichardt Touch Rugby Club recently donated 29 pairs of school shoes to learners of Masedi Primary School. The club is a non-profit company (NPC) that aims to help learners from poor backgrounds. Former Democratic Alliance (DA) caucus leader in the Musina Municipality Mr Elliot Magwira caused a stir with his sudden announcement that he was leaving the DA to join ActionSA. Magwira was known as one of the strongest DA leaders locally and served as councillor representing the party in the Musina Municipality.

In an exclusive interview with the Limpopo Mirror last Saturday (19 March), Magwira confirmed his political exodus from the party and said that his decision was based on a personal conflict of views and values.

“In my past 11 years as a loyal member of the DA, I have raised several issues with the provincial leadership, which have never been responded to. One of the issues I raised on several occasions was in connection with factionalism in the organisation and the provincial leadership did not do anything about it. The best way was to leave the organisation because there was no hope that our issues will ever be attended to.”

Asked if he had written a formal letter to inform the DA of his departure, Magwira said: “There is no need to write a formal letter to

people who do not take you seriously. I just decided to leave the party and terminate my membership with immediate effect. I’m looking forward to a more secure political home in ActionSA because it stands for non-racialism and accountable leadership.”

The local constituency political head of the DA, Rashim Maharaj, wished Magwira good luck in his new political career and thanked him for his contributions towards the DA during the 11 years he served with the party.

ActionSA’s provincial coordinator, Collins Nwandzule, said they were celebrating Mawira’s decision to join ActionSA. “He is a seasoned political leader, and we welcome him with open arms. We are happy to have someone of his calibre to help in the growth of ActionSA.”

Stone Breakers give Madombidzha Stars a 12-0 hiding in MMK clash

By Kaizer Nengovhela Tshikhwani Stone Breakers gave Madombidzha Western Stars a day to remember when they hammered them 12-0 in the Safa MMK Administrators league match at the Tshikhwani Grounds on Sunday.

Stars played the first 10 minutes of the game without two men as two of their regular players arrived late for the game. Breakers capitalised and scored their opening goal in the ninth minute of the match through Pfariso Mutshinya.

Two minutes later, he was on target again.

Fhulufhelo Dzhivhuwo of Stars was penalised for a late tackle on Thendo Tshusa in the 17th minute and soon thereafter, Livhuwani Masindi of Breakers scored his team’s third goal. He dribbled past three defenders in a row and unleashed a ground-cutter.

Stars should have reduced the margin, but their lethal striker Tshilidzi Lishi’s shot landed in the keeper’s hands.

Silas Rambona also shot straight to the keeper three minutes later. Pfariso Mutshinya was on target again in the 64th minute and finished off a square pass from Thwalima Ramashidzha Breakers’ fifth and sixth

goals came in quick session when Marubini Mushukwa finished off a square pass. Stars used two of their substitutions during the first half. Their introduction of the new faces, however, did not change the complexion of the match.

Ampfarisaho Ragwala won a loose ball and beat the keeper with a close-range ground cutter in the 74th minute, and two minutes later, Mashudu Mulaudzi hit the back of the net. Marubini Mushukwa scored in the 76th minute and Ragwala and Livhuwani Masindi also scored late in the match.

Ablex too strong for Emmanuel FC

By Kaizer Nengovhela In their SAFA Limpopo ABC Motsepe League match that was played at the Louis Trichardt Show Grounds on Saturday, Ablex United collected the maximum points at the expense of Emmanuel FC, whom they beat 2-1.

Emmanuel took the game to their opponents from the onset, but their original fighting spirit faded as the game progressed. Luckily, they were one goal ahead when they lost

cohesion in the middle of the park. They scored their opening goal in the 17th minute when Letlape Mlamelili found the net, following a brilliant pass from Nhlanhla Gobeni.

United’s search for the equaliser was not in vain.

Their goal came in the 64th minute when Dlodlo Phiwayinkosi hooked in the ball from a neat pass from Thobani Mncwango.

United created some promising moves from behind, but penetrating through the

defence of Emmanuel was a problem for their strikers.

United regrouped from behind, creating some promising moves in the second half.

United scored the winning goal in the 86th minute. Daclen Ngwetjana gave the ball the final touch after a scramble within the penalty box.

The players who went into the referee’s book for different infringements were Endlani Chabalala of Emmanuel and Victor Savhasa of United.

Eight U/13 soccer teams from the Musina area battled things out in the tournament.

Chavani off to Mauritius to blow the whistle in African Cup clash

By Frank Mavhungu Following his accreditation to officiate at international level early this year, a local soccer referee, Mr Jelly Chavani, had his first assignment in Mauritius on Wednesday. The 26-year-old Chavani flew to Mauritius on Monday morning. He was the referee in the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) elimination-round match between Mauritius and Seychelles, which was played at the Anjalay Stadium.

During an interview with him shortly before he left for the subtropical island, the diminutive match official revealed that he could not wait to blow the

whistle for the first time at international level. Asked whether he was nervous since this was his first experience, the Premier Soccer League’s best referee in the 2019/20 season said that he had nothing to fear.

He revealed that he was fit, both mentally and physically, adding that he was ready to absorb the pressure that goes with officiating at international level. Mr Chavani said that officiating at international level was a great achievement to him. He added that his last target was to officiate in a World Cup final game, something that he hoped to achieve within the next five years.

Chavani started blowing the whistle at local football association (LFA) level

about nine years ago. Following his superb performance at the both the LFA and regional level between 2013 and 2015, Chavani was promoted to officiate at professional level in the middle of the 2015/16 soccer season. He only got to officiate a few National First Division matches that season.

After excelling in the NFD games, Chavani was given the thumbs-up to officiate during the PSL matches as well.

Due to his ability to absorb the heat that goes with officiating at big games, Chavani was tasked to officiate in crucial matches, including the Soweto derbies between Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates and a number of cup-final games over the past years.
