Mourners frog-marched out of church
Chaos at funeral service By Elmon Tshikhudo
A church is regarded as a holy place, characterised by peace and love. The Church of the Holy Ghost in Ha Mutsha was like a scene from a horror movie on Sunday. Chaos ensued at the church’s Hulelani branch in Ha Mutsha outside Makhado during the funeral of granny Tovhowani Grace Mulaudzi, who was a church deacon. This happened after an announcement was made during the funeral service that certain people would not be allowed inside the church premises. The drama unfolded when several people, including the daughter of the deceased, Ndivhuho, her husband and well-known lawyer Hanyani Mabasa and other people who accompanied them were frogmarched out of the church. The shocking incident was witnessed by hundreds of people, some of whom were attending the funeral. A group of fancily clothed men who were standing at the door were overheard saying that they were to use force to eject those who were not wanted. Some people suffered bruises and had their clothes torn during the ensuing scuffle. The daughter, Ndivhuho Mabasa, is said to have a longstanding feud with the church because she had defected to join a breakaway church. The rivalry persisted for many years until the death of her mother. Some are claiming that the mother spoke of reconciliation just before her death, but church members seem not to have followed her wish. - Continues on p2 The late granny Tovhowani Mudau, whose funeral revived an old church feud.
The stand-off between police and members of the Church of the Holy Ghost at Muledane cemetery on Sunday. This was during the funeral service of Tovhowani Mulaudzi, a deacon of the church.

“Today I have seen Satan himself ...” (From page 1) For some time, the once peaceful church premises became an embarrassing scene, with some sprawled on the ground after being manhandled by the mob. After they were taken out of the churchyard, the burly men guarded the main gate and screened each mourner entering the premises. The “outcasts” had gone to the nearest satellite police station at Ha Mutsha in the meantime to seek protection. Before laying charges, they came back to the church under police guard as they wanted to attend the service, but some members were against it and they left. After opening cases of assault, those who were allegedly attacked went with the police to the cemetery at Muledane, some many kilometres away from the church. An ugly scene nearly developed at the gate when those attacked pointed out people who had manhandled them. The victims pointed out some of the suspects, some of whom also admitted to having assaulted them but the police could not arrest any of them. The situation turned volatile when members of the church surrounded the police and told them to their faces that they would not arrest any of their members. To avoid a nasty situation, police let the suspects go free, promising to investigate further. The actions of the church members
were widely condemned by those who were left outside the yard. A senior local municipality official who had attended the funeral said the actions of the unruly members were uncalled for. “This is place of reconciliation; we all belong to one God, irrespective of which church one belongs. I feel it is unfair not to allow a daughter of the granny the chance to bury her mother, no matter the differences they might have had,” he said. A Maphangwa family member said his late father would have fainted upon seeing police at the church. Maphangwa is the late leader and one of the founders of the church in the area. One of those outside the church who witnessed the nasty incident remarked that: “Today I have seen Satan himself with a big tail,” referring to the act of using violence to take people out of a funeral. Another one joined in: “He was having a big fork in his hands.” Hanyani Mabasa, the deceased's mother-inlaw, said his wife was bitter after being not afforded the chance to see her mother for the last time. He showed this paper a copy of the letter he had written to Derek Wright, the lawyer for the church, requesting permission to attend the funeral service inside the church premises. In the letter, he appealed to the church to allow the woman to pay her last respects to her mother on humanitarian grounds. In its response, the church said:” Our instructions are that the church has no comment on the aforesaid letter and that this matter is purely a family one, which should be sorted out between family members.” The leader of the church, Solly Sibisi, who was there at the funeral, refused to comment, saying he did not see anything. Police spokesperson W/O Solly Mukhola of the Levubu police confirmed the incident. “There was a fight when one party did not want another party to attend the funeral,” he said. He said one count of assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm and one count of common assault were opened. He said the suspects were still at large. Some people who had come from Johannesburg who had also been allegedly assaulted said they could not lay charges, because it would be costly to come back for the court School teacher Mihloti Baloyi, a relative of Ndivhuho Mabasa, who case. also suffered injuries during the fracas, is making a statement at the local satellite police station. Assisting her is Lt Luambo Likhade.

Johannes Ratshitanga Nemavhola, surrounded by his children during his 100th birthday celebration. By Kaizer Nengovhela
Grandpa Ratshitanga celebrates a century It was a delightful day for Johannes Ratshitanga Nemavhola as many people joined him to celebrate his 100th birthday at a party held at Tshikhwarani on Saturday. According to one of his children, Ms Florence Mpharalala, they organised the party just to please their father. "It was right to organise a party for him, because he is where most people will never be. It is good to pay tribute to a person while he is still alive, rather than to buy expensive things when he or she has died. We love our father as he loves us too," said Mpharalala. Nemavhola walks with the aid of a walking stick, but he is still strong and hopes to celebrate many more birthdays. His deteriorating eyesight is nothing to go by because his strong hearing and razor-sharp mind keep his days enjoyable. He has 14 children, 29 grandchildren and 34 great-
grandchildren. He remembers the old days when there were no schools, clinics, hospitals and roads. "We used to travel for long distances on foot because there were no cars," said Nemavhola. “The elders spent most of their time tilling the land for food and young boys and girls like us were responsible for looking after the goats and cows," he says. Nemavhola says the secrets of his long life are eating healthy food and listening to the elders. "I have enjoyed fruit and vegetables throughout my life and I have never tasted alcohol," he says. "We spent most of the time playing indigenous games (such as) mufuvha, and that kept our bodies strong. There were certain taboos that the elders told us not to do and I believe that increased the days of our lives. I would like more generations to know about our times, although I believe that
I will still live for many years to come. If you live a clean life, God will bless you and you will live long. Respect your elders and preserve your culture. Eat healthy food and distance yourself from alcohol,” he said. This old man is a member of the Zion Christian Church and is outspoken about his love for God. "I'm here today because of the will of God. Without God, I wouldn't be celebrating my 100th birthday. Where there is God, there is life," he explained. Senior Apostolic Elias Mudau of Christ Worshippers Christian Centre said the celebration was a historic event. "A family who does not have senior citizens lacks advice as they provide wisdom," said Mudau. He thanked the family for not sending their father to an old-age home and for deciding to live with him "in the smooth pace" of their home.

One of the planet's most famous features is a vast, longlived storm forming an easily seen great red spot (GRS) in a telescope. The GRS crosses Jupiter's central meridian at 18:57 (SAST) and will be clearly seen one hour later, when astronomical twilight and dark skies begin. Some of the deep-sky targets on the evening will be the galaxies M31 and M33 (the Andromeda and Pin-

New boss for Limpopo Police Makhado councillor laid to rest commissioner, then as station commander and finally as cluster commander respectively. In 2009 he was appointed Gauteng deputy provincial commissioner responsible for policing, a position he held until his appointment as provincial commissioner for Limpopo at the beginning of the month. Last Tuesday, MEC Phadagi received a courtesy visit from Mpembe. This meeting discussed the general crime trends and challenges in the province and how these can be brought under control. Phadagi has thrown the challenge at the new provincial chief to squeeze all life from criminals, so that Limpopo remains a relatively safe and secure haven for citizens and visitors. Lt-Gen Mpembe was officially presented to the people of Limpopo on Monday, so that he can outline his vision in dealing with the challenges of crime. (LIN News / Laeveld Bulletin)
A councillor of the Makhado Municipality who recently passed away was buried at an emotional funeral at Gogobole village last Saturday. Cllr Selina Gundula died after a short illness two weeks ago. Politicians and government officials descended on the Gundula family to show their last respects to her. Family members and friends could not hold back their tears when Gundula’s body was being lowered into the grave. Several broke down, while others collapsed and fainted. The mayor of the Makhado Municipality, Cllr Mavhungu LuruliRamakhanya, said that although
Gundula would be missed, she would always be remembered for her good work. “It is a loss to the municipality, as well as the community she served as a councillor,” she added. The regional chairperson of the ANC, Cllr Falaza Mdaka, said that Gundula had been elected by the people to serve them. “She never fought for any positions and was a disciplined member of the ANC,” he said. She is survived by her husband, mother and five children, Mpho, Livhuwani, Thendo, Rendani and Tshilidzi.

The Limpopo Province finally has a new police commissioner with the appointment of LieutenantGeneral Thabethe Simon Mpembe at the beginning of November. Mpembe succeeds Lt-Gen Amon Mashigo, who left the police service at the end of September after serving for just more than a year as the provincial commissioner. To his credit, Mashigo managed to maintain the status of Limpopo as the province with the lowest crime rate during his short spell in the province. Lt-Gen Mpembe has been a member of the SAPS for 33 years, after his appointment in 1978 as a constable in his native Free State Province. He rose through the ranks until he was promoted to the rank of Major-General in 2000 when he was Gauteng’s deputy provincial commissioner responsible for support services. From 2003 until 2009 he moved on to work in the Vaalrand and Johannesburg Central, first as area

Drug smugglers arrested at border post
Reri’s Insurance Brokers donated 160 files to five primary schools around Nzhelele last Thursday. Photographed during the event were, from left, Alice Miriri, Jeaneth Nemauluma, Avhashoni Malivha (Raliphaswa Primary), Abrina Ramusilei, Matodzi Mudau and the MD of Reri’s Insurance Brokers, Mr David Mureri. The five schools that received files are Raliphaswa, Nanga, Rabali, Matshavhawe and Shura.
SAPS members have arrested two Zimbabwean cross-border bus drivers and a Tanzanian woman suspected of smuggling 4kg of suspected illicit drugs worth thousands of rand into the country through the Beit Bridge Border Post. The two drivers are employed by Intercape Bus Company. It is understood that the trio was travelling on the Intercape bus, which was travelling from Harare to Johannesburg. The suspects were arrested early on Friday morning in Musina during a routine stop-and-search patrol. The drugs and the bus have since been seized by the South African Revenues Services. SAPS provincial spokesperson in Limpopo Brig Hangwani Mulaudzi said the trio was arrested at around 04:00 when they had just left the border post. He added that intensive investigations into the matter were underway and the net was closing in on other members of the group. “Our officers in Musina, together with customs officials, discovered a black plastic bag behind the driver’s seat. The 45-year-old driver from Zimbabwe was requested to open up the plastic bag, upon which police located a white substance.
Following a subsequent search of the plastic bag, police located what appeared to be drugs, weighing almost 4kg. The bus driver, together with his 31-year-old assistant, also from Zimbabwe, was arrested immediately,” he said. Mulaudzi said further investigation led to the arrest of a third person, a 32-year-old woman from Tanzania, who had allegedly connived with the two men. “The suspected drugs have been sent for forensic tests and we are yet to ascertain their value. All three the suspects have been detained at the Musina SAPS and charged with possession of suspected drugs; they are expected to appear in court soon. Mulaudzi said the police were on the look-out for smugglers at the border post, adding that they would not give the criminals any breathing space. He added that they had come up with a number of ways to counter the rampant smuggling at the border post. “We are out in full force and I want to warn the criminals that we will deal with them harshly,” he said. Cigarettes, curios, artifacts and flea market goods are the most common items that are smuggled between Zimbabwe and South Africa.

Fire leaves Mpheni couple without roof A man nearly died when the flames of a raging fire consumed his two-room house at Dilinde section in Mpheni Block C. Lucky Mtileni returned home after a serious drinking spree at a local tavern on Saturday at around 04:00. All he had in mind was to first enjoy his 1,25 bottle of soft drink and then go to bed. “I lit the candle stuck in the mouth of a cooldrink bottle and put it on top of the stand in the kitchen,” he told Mirror this week, pointing at the iron piece which is all that remains of the stand. “I drank the whole bottle. Then I went to the next room to sleep.” It seems as if the candle dripped onto the cloth covering the candle stand, and soon the cloth caught fire. Flames spread through the room, destroying furniture, curtains and all his groceries before it could invade the room in which he was sleeping. The heat and pungent smoke choked him until he woke up. He saw fire all around him. It had burnt up the wooden door which separated the kitchen and his bedroom. “I saw the curtains burning terribly, but I had to rush that way to exit,” he says. “The window pane slit my forehead and some areas on my face, as you can see for yourself.” After noticing the Mtileni house in flames, people from around started jumping over his fence and arrived at his yard with the intention of rescuing him. He told them to leave him alone and mind their business as he stood at the front of the burning house. “Go away! You can’t just slip under my fence or jump my fence,” he told the villagers. “You’re transgressing!” Members of the community, however, didn’t move away. They suspected that Mtileni might have set the house alight to let his spouse, Nkhensani Bila, die in the fire. So they alerted the Makhado Fire Brigade, who responded quickly by coming to extinguish the fire. It was then established that
Nkhensani was away and not in the burning house. In the meantime, rumours spread throughout the entire sections of Mpheni and Elim of a man who had set his own house on fire, so that members of his community could contribute R5 per household to help him. “Some people are mad,” he says in answering to the allegations that he burnt down his house intentionally. “How can I destroy my house? I worked hard to build my house.” The Dilinde Civic say they are deeply touched by what had happened to the Mtileni family. “But we’ll first investigate the matter before we can even think of helping out,” says the chairperson of the civic, Mr Obed Maumela. “This is a critical case anyway. Mtileni admitted to the civic that he came home drunk and there are these allegations of his having set his house alight.” Mtileni’s wife doesn’t say much. “What had happened is not good,” she says briefly. When Mirror left the Mtileni family, Mtileni himself went back to piecing together a small shack for shelter while his spouse squatted on the concrete rabble with a sad look in her eyes.

Ex-offender’s book launched at correctional centre There is life beyond imprisonment, said the director of the Kutama Sinthumule maximum security prison, Mr Lazarus Ngcwonwani, during the official launching of the book of an ex-offender, Mr Tshifhiwa Given Mukwevho, at the prison’s premises last Friday. He said that regardless of the length of a jail sentence, almost each offender would go home one day. When the time for parole comes, like it came for Mukwevho, he can do one of two things. He can either go back to a life of crime or he can do something positive about his life. “He (Mukwevho) chose the latter,” said Ngcwonwani. He added that as a correctional facility, they believe that people can change. “We want to change the negative impression among South Africans that ‘once an offender, always an offender’ (is true). We want to replace this impression with
a message that says a correctional centre is a place of new beginnings, a place that changes a person from being an offender to becoming a law-abiding citizen,” he added. The book launch comes after Mukwevho, who is now out on parole after serving 10 years in prison, wrote a collection of short stories, entitled “A Traumatic Revenge”. He spent all these years in prison after being found guilty on several counts of breaking into shops in the Louis Trichardt area between 1998 and 2000. Some of the short stories in the book include Jigsaw in the sky, Son of Leah, A traumatic revenge, Strange demise, We have seen tsoliyo, Hannah’s daughter and Music to the ears. Mukwevho (27) was released on parole in November 2010. He said he wanted to lead by example, so that other prisoners could walk in his footsteps. “I realized that there is no life in prison.
Sometimes we do bad things unintentionally,” he said. He added that joy is never something that enters one’s life automatically. “One has to create it by means of doing positive things,” he said. Mukwevho added: “All my former inmates must know that there are lots of challenges out here. Once you are outside, never consider what bad things people may say about you. Strive to do good things to beautify your life. Never expect that it will be easy for you to get employment when you are released. You must not be tempted to go back to prison.” He said the perception exists that parole officers are against ex-offenders. “Parole officers are not against us but are there to show us the way. What is important is to understand each other. Respect them and they will respect you too,” Mukwevho said. He thanked Zoutnet, publishers of the Zoutpansberger and the Limpopo Mirror newspapers, for giving him a second chance in life. “They allowed me to write for their papers, which to me meant a second chance to reclaim my life,” said Mukwevho. Mukwevho, who matriculated in 2006 while in prison, is on the verge of completing his Bachelor of Arts degree in Kutama Sinthumule Maximum Prison Director Mr Lazarus Ngcwonwani (left), Mr Indiran Pillay Languages and Li (second from right) and Mrs Lizzie Masango from Correctional Services (right) congratulate terature through the an ex-offender, Mr Given Mukwevho (second from left), during the launching of his book ´A University of South Traumatic Revenge´. Info about vacancies misleading The South African Police Service (SAPS) has warned members of the public not to be misled by information doing the rounds, via e-mail among others, that there are vacant posts for entry-level trainees in the South African Police Service for the 2010/11 financial year. The SAPS states that there are no vacant posts for entry-level trainees at this stage and that information relevant to this subject should be ignored as it is no longer valid. The posts contained in the circulated information were all filled
during January 2011 and the trainees employed as a result of that intake are busy with their basic learning programme. Members of the public who are regularly visiting police stations requesting application forms for entry-level posts into the South African Police Service are advised that they can only apply for such positions when these become available and are advertised in the mainstream media. For enquiries, phone provincial spokespersons Lt Col Ronel Otto at 082 451 7176.

Five young men arrested for rape Five young men briefly appeared in the Tshilwavhusiku Magistrate’s Court on Monday for allegedly gang-raping a 22-year-old woman. The incident occurred at Ha-Rathidili village in the Sinthumule area last Friday. According to the police, three of the accused are 18, one is 19 and one is 20 years old. It is alleged that the five dragged the woman into the bush and repeatedly raped her, one after the other. The victim, who is a resident of Elim, had just visited her relative in
the village when the incident happened. She was coming from a bar lounge with her boyfriend when the five accused approached them. It is alleged that they threatened to stab the woman’s boyfriend and he then ran away, leaving them with his girlfriend. W/O Godwin Mahuwa said the police had opened a case of rape and investigations were still continuing. The case was postponed to 13 December, while the five remain in custody.

Hope for disabled entrepreneurs Disabled entrepreneurs from around Vhembe could soon be smiling all the way to the bank. This follows a day-long supply-chain workshop held specially for them. The workshop, prepared jointly by the Vhembe District Municipality and the Vhembe Disabled Forum, was held on Friday at the Thulamela Council chambers. Experts were roped in and presented different papers during the seminar. The coordinator of the seminar, Mr Khathu Mapholi, who heads the special programmes in the district, said many disabled entrepreneurs started their own businesses, but they did not prosper as they lacked the necessary skills that needed to run them. “We felt as a municipality that there is a need to empower our disabled entrepreneurs to be professionals in their respective businesses. The professionalism can only be realized if they receive training through such workshops,” he said. “We will identify their needs from
time to time, in conjunction with their representative body, and we will address it for the benefit of our disabled entrepreneurs,” he added. He said they were happy that programmes for disabled entrepreneurs were bearing fruits as they had produced business people of note. He admitted, however, that there were still challenges as others had registered their businesses but were overlooked when it came to getting jobs. Mr Mukundi Mushaphi, economic development manager at the Vhembe District Municipality, presented a paper on the various opportunities in the municipality. Mr Mackson Matshidza from the municipality’s supply chain service told participants about doing business with the municipality, government and different departments. Well-known actor of television and radio dramas Mr Alpheus Dzivhani urged entrepreneurs to join them in a campaign to revive morals if they were to succeed in their businesses.

Beit Bridge resident kills wife and then commits suicide In a hair-raising incident that has left the community of Makhado village outside Beit Bridge shocked, a 39-year-old-local man fatally stabbed his wife and tried to kill his two-day-old baby, before committing suicide, following a domestic dispute. Local police spokesperson Supt Lawrence Chinhengo said the gruesome incident occurred on last Sunday night. “The man, Mboneni Sibanda, had been staying in South Africa for the past four years, where he was employed. During that period, his wife Letina Muleya had been staying alone at their homestead in Makhado village. “Our preliminary investigations indicate that, while Mboneni was away Letina had an adulterous affair and she eventually fell pregnant. The adulterous affair came to light when Mboneni decided to come home for good in October and discovered that his wife was pregnant. He kept quiet, however, until she gave birth,” he said. Chinhengo said the woman gave birth to a baby boy on 11 No-
vember. Shortly thereafter, an argument ensued between the two over the paternity of the child. “Things reached boiling point between the two and they got involved in an argument, leading to a fist fight. It is said that Mboneni picked up a knife and stabbed Letina all over her body and she died instantly. “He also tried to slit the toddler’s throat and left him for dead,” Chinhengo said. Soon after committing the offence, Sibanda committed suicide by hanging himself from a tree branch, a few metres away from the homestead. Sibanda’s body was discovered by a passerby who rushed to his homestead, where he found the woman and the toddler lying in a pool of blood. “The matter was then reported to the police and we have since conveyed the couple’s bodies to the Beit Bridge District Hospital mortuary. The knife was also recovered at the scene of the crime,” Chinhengo said. The infant has been admitted to Beit Bridge District Hospital, where his condition is critical.

Fire-awareness certificates for schools Schools and pupils who participated in a fire-awareness campaign under the auspices of the Zoutpansberg East Circuit of Education recently received certificates and prizes for their efforts. The ceremony took place at Nyatema Primary School in the Nzhelele area. Twenty-nine chools participated in the campaign and competition and the winning schools went away with trophies, while the participating pupils all received certificates. The campaign is an initiative of the Makhado Fire Protection
Association, in association with the For Learning Campaign Nyatema Cluster. The theme of the campaign was Veld and Forest Fires. According to Mr André Kruger, the chairperson of the Makhado Fire Protection Association, the campaign is aimed at making learners and the communities aware of the dangers of uncontrolled fires. Kruger said 29 selected schools took part and competed in visual, verbal and composition writing. Speaking during the prize-giving ceremony, Kruger said fires had
become potentially destructive in the community, communal and commercial agriculture, forestry and the conservation industry. He said communities had become very vulnerable as a result of climate change and tenure issues. “Weather conditions are not predictable, which reduces the effect of any fire-preventative measures. This calls for us to continually assess fire-prevention strategies,” he said. Kruger said he was excited by the level of participation and the interest shown by the schools.
Eltivillas Primary School´s year-end prize-giving ceremony was held last Friday. Top achievers in each grade were awarded with a certificate and a trophy. From left are Mohammed Patel (Grade 2), Tshivule Lavhelesani (Grade 1), Jolly Nisha (Grade 3), Norin Haque (Grade 6), Rokunda Munzhedzi (Grade 4) and Jolly Afia (Grade 5).

The sound of piercing Zionist drums filtered through the fresh morning breeze... On entering the funeral tent, one is greeted by the white and blue colours of the United African Apostolic Church, mixed with the green, black and gold colours of the ANC. This was during the funeral service of the deceased ANC youth leader, Michael Mudau, at Makwarela. Mudau (28) drowned while chilling out with friends at the Nandoni Dam last weekend. The funeral was held last Saturday. It drew mourners from all over Vhembe, among them the
leadership of the UAAC, led by the church’s general secretary, Mr Nkhangweni Ramudzuli, and the regional leadership of the ANC, led by secretary Khathu Netshifhefhe. The service was different from others, where parents and other close family members would be crying and be in mourning. This was a celebration of a life well lived. The mother of the deceased, Ms Magdeline Mudau, showed courage and at one stage led the women in a dance during the proceedings. The ANC‘s regional secretary, Khathu Netshifhefhe, said Mudau had led an exemplary
life, both in church and politics. “He was the voice of the youth, but respected the policies of the ANC,” said Netshifhefhe. The general secretary of the UAAC, Pastor Nkhangweni Ramudzuli, said that after hearing of the sad news, the head of the church, Archbishop Miriri, and a delegation visited the family. “This goes to show that Mudau was not an ordinary person. He was young but his contribution in the church and his organization was immense,” he said. Mudau was finally buried at the Mbaleni cemetery in Thohoyandou.

Exam postponed after paper gets stolen Grade 11 pupils in all high schools in the Sinthumule and Kutama areas that fall under the Soutpansberg West Circuit could not write their exams on Monday, following incidents where pupils were found in possession of an agricultural science question paper last Sunday. Pupils were not allowed to write their exams as the Department of Education in the Vhembe District instructed that it be postponed. It is alleged that an examiner’s daughter and her friends stole a set of question papers from her father’s bag at Gogobole village. The girls then allegedly went on a selling spree, offering the paper to all Grade 11 pupils who were to write agriculture in the area. The fraud apparently came to light after some pupils started complaining about not being given the exam paper, because they did not have money to pay for the paper. They then alerted the police, who took the girls in
for questioning. It was, however, not revealed for how much the paper was being sold. The station commander for the Tshilwavhusiku police, Col Freddy Shirinda, confirmed that they had found some pupils in possession of exam question papers. “We have taken in some pupils for questioning and later released them. No case was opened as we are still waiting for the department to contact us. They only told us that they were still waiting for a directive from the national office,” he said. School pupils from the area said they were disappointed about the fact that the exam was postponed. “It is very demoralizing, because some of us were prepared to write,” they said. An examiner whose paper was stolen from his house said on Tuesday that his daughter’s friends were the ones who were allegedly responsible. The man is working as a curriculum advisor at the Soutpans-
berg East Circuit. It is said that the girl who allegedly stole the paper did not even take agriculture as subject at school. She allegedly claimed to be doing her friends a favour by stealing the paper for them. The Department of Education’s provincial spokesperson, Mr Pat Kgomo, confirmed on Tuesday that an exam question paper was indeed stolen. He said that there seems to have been a leak and that the department was busy investigating the case and how it happened. “As a result, we were forced to postpone the examination. We are busy trying to look for another date when the paper will be written. We always have other sets (of exam question papers) on standby,” said Kgomo. Asked if it had affected the whole of Vhembe District, Kgomo said that it only affected schools falling under the Soutpansberg West Circuit and a few schools falling under the Soutpansberg East Circuit.

Project supplies eggs to whole area Sasekisani Cooperative is a community project started in 2005 by 13 community members, with the aim of creating jobs and fighting poverty. The cooperative is located at Mahonisi Village under the auspices of the Thulamela Local Municipality. “When the project started in 2005, we were 13 but four resigned due to challenges beyond our control. The project initially operated in an RDP house, until we received 18 hectares from Hosi Mahonisi,” says Mr Hasani Khosa, director of the project. He says they registered their cooperative in 2006. “We approached the Department of Agriculture, who allocated 16 000 egg-laying chickens through their poverty alleviation
programme. The Department of Economic Development, with the assistance of the Limpopo Business Support Agency (LIBSA), assisted us with the fencing of four hectares, the building of one shed and with equipment such as battery cages. We further took out a loan of R1,7 million from Old Mutual to build another 60-metre shed.” He explains that they currently have 19 000 egglaying chickens and the average number of eggs laid per day are 16 000. “’We expect each hen to lay an egg daily, but due to temperature fluctuation, feeding, diseases and other external factors, we get fewer eggs. We sell our products to our local communities, but the bulk is sold to supermarkets in Thohoy-
andou, Malamulele and Giyani and other hawkers throughout Vhembe District,” he says. They have employed 14 people and have a turnover of R2,7 million per annum. “We have bought one Toyota Hino truck and one Hyundai to deliver our products to our clients,” adds Khosa. According to him, their products are in demand from as far as Jane Furse and Siyabuswa in Mpumalanga. “Our challenge is to meet the demand of our clients and that we need a bigger packhouse,” says project member Joseph Khosa. Mr Makhavhu Nkhangweleni, Head of the Agriculture Section in Vhembe, said that they would try their best to purchase a grading machine for eggs for the project.

Book boarding for pets in advance Pet owners who wish to board their pets (cats and dogs) at the SPCA’s Louis Trichardt kennels during the December holidays must do so in advance. Bookings can only be made with Mrs Bea Reimer between 18:30 and 19:00 or with Lawrence Khodobo during the day between 08:00 and 16:00. No other bookings will be accepted. “Please do not leave a voice message on any phone and presume your booking has been accepted. It will not be accepted.
We also ask that you do not leave a message with one of the kennel staff,” said Reimer. All pets, cats and dogs, must be inoculated, de-wormed and bathed or dipped before coming into the kennels. “We will need proof of yearly inoculations, as well as rabies inoculation when you bring your pet in,” said Reimer. Inoculation must take place 10 days before the pet is brought to the kennels. Reimer and Khodobo must also be made aware of
pets on medication while these are at the kennels. “If you intend leaving your pets at home during the holiday, please make adequate arrangements with a reliable person for them. Remember, there will be fireworks while you are away, so be prepared,” Reimer warned. The boarding fees are R30 per dog per day and R20 per cat per day. For more information, phone Reimer on 082 424 5712 or Khodobo at 082 965 5151.

Major facelift for Shayandima crèche
Mamugudubi (in traditional attire), poses with some of the winners during the function in Cape Town. By Elmon Tshikhudo
National award for local care-giver Bridgette Mamugudubi quit her well-paying job and cashed in her meagre pension a few years ago to set up a home for the disadvantaged. Now she has surprised all by winning a national award for her effort. Mamugudubi (42), of Muledane, was recently given an award as one of the two winners of the Inyathelo Awards for Community Philantropy during an event in Cape Town. As the founder of the Litshani Vhana Vhade Foundation, she now cares for more than 150 orphans, vulnerable and disadvantaged children on a daily basis. “I never expected to win such a coveted award within a short space of my involvement in community work. The award came as a surprise but made me realise that there are people out there who are looking at what we are doing in trying to make life better for others,” she said.
She said the award had opened doors for her and the foundation. “I am happy that, through the competition, I was able to network with many people and I am now exposed to the world. This can open doors for me, and we get more assistance for the children,” he said. She said some companies had already shown interest and they would soon be training their staff. She said her road was not a bed of roses. “There were many obstacles in the road, but through the grace of God,we managed to reach this far. We received support from many quarters of our community, family, the business community and other generous, good Samaritans,” she said. She said they were offered a site and will soon be embarking on a project at Gondeni Sterkstroom, where children will be housed but that will depend on
the availability of funds. “There are many children at Gondeni Sterkstroom who need our care. There is no clinic at the village and our presence there will make a difference. We desperately need funding for this essential project,” she said. Mamugudubi started her community work in 2009. Over the past two years, she has managed to set up an early childhood development programme and drop-in centre. Her foundation also runs a community library and literacy programme as well as a community outreach programme, which focuses on fighting and reducing the high incidence of HIV/Aids and gender-based violence in the area. She supports two young soccer teams and continues to deliver food parcels and clothing to 26 needy families in the surrounding villages.
The dilapidated Shayandima Crèche, outside Thohoyandou, the township’s oldest crèche, will never be the same. This follows a visit to the crèche by Limpopo’s MEC for Public Works, Ms Thabitha Mohlala, two weeks ago. Mohlala, who arrived with a contingent from Public Works, led by the Head of Department, Mr Christopher Tshamano, Vhembe Mayor Florence Dzhombere and Thulamela May-
or Grace Mahosi, spent much of Wednesday assisting at the crèche. After an inspection, they painted the dilapidated crèche. She handed over some pots, cutlery, plates and other kitchen utensils to the crèche. After spending much of the day at the crèche, Mohlala left a message of hope to the management of the crèche. When she left, most of the building had been painted. This is part of the Expanded Public Works Programme
Wednesday, where they as a department visit identified projects in the province. Before visiting the crèche, Mohlala handed over title deeds to three municipalities in Vhembe. The handing-over ceremony was held at the Vhembe Municipality’s auditorium. After her brief address, it was paint and brushes for the MEC and her entourage and the management of the crèche.
Receiving the goods donated by the MEC is Mr Baldwin Mashau, the chairperson of the crèche. Assisting MEC Mohlala during the handover is the Vhembe mayor, Cllr Florence Dzhombere, and Thulamela Mayor Cllr Grace Mahosi (right).

Another fine victory for Tshiozwi Dynamos Tshiozwi Dynamos were too strong for their rivals, Benny’s Care Soccer Academy, in the final match of the Summer Soccer Tournament played at the Tshiozwi grounds on Sunday. The final score was 2-1 in favour of Dynamos. The youthful Benny’s were fully prepared for the game and managed to match their opponents pound for pound in all departments. Benny’s made their opponents’ defenders work overtime by making silly mistakes at the centre of the pitch. Muhangwi Mukosi of Dynamos received a yellow card in
the 12th minute, when he tackled Phophi Phophi from behind. Dynamos opened the scoreline in the 24th minute via Maligana Siebe. Benny’s missed a goal five minutes later, when Yona Mulaudzi’s shot was saved by the Dynamos’ keeper, Thendo Shivhishi. Muhangwi Mukosi scored his team’s second goal when he finished off a cross from Mpho Mavhandu. The second half was characterised by wasted chances in the Benny’s camp. Nyathi Netshiendeulu of Dynamos was reprimanded with a
card for a late tackle on Billy Moyo in the 67th minute. The home side strengthened their midfield by introducing Gwasda Nedzamba and Maanda Nengovhela for Mpho Mavhandu and Maligana Siebe. Clement Maphaba tried his luck from outside the box and equalised in the 70th minute. Rendani Galedzane reduced the scoreline in the 78th minute. Amazing 3-0 victory for Phungu All Stars
Brian Mavhungu of Phungo (left) and Leabua Lemena of Nobela fight for the ball.
Phungo All Stars proved all their critics wrong when they rose to the occasion and beat one of the favourites for the league title, Nobela All Stars, 3-0 in their Vodacom Promotional League match at the FNB Makwarela Stadium on Saturday. The game was played under protest. Nobela All Stars lodged a protest with the referee before the kickoff. In the protest, Nobela alleged that one of the midfielders for Phungo, Brian Mavhungu, was not properly registered with the team. That did not affect the team’s performance, as Phungo took the game to their opponents from the first whistle. It was in the 24th minute when Phungo broke the deadlock. Ivan Mahangwahaya caught the keeper of Nobela napping and beat him with a ground cutter. The striker of Nobela, Thembisani Nevhulamba, could not live up to the fans’ expectations as he was well contained. Justice Rasebotse, who scored a brace in the game, made his presence felt in the 29th minute. He beat three defenders in a row before showing the keeper the wrong way. The captain of Phungo, Brian Mavhungu, was reprimanded with a card for a dangerous tackle on Lebo Masena. Nobela were the first to effect a change to their starting lineup. They replaced Lucky Shoba for Sydwell Ritsuri three minutes before the break.
The last half saw Phungo continue from where they left off in the first one. Justice Rasebotse completed his brace in the 67th minute. He finished
off a rebound after Sifiso Masena’s close range attempt. Phungo fortified their midfield by introducing Hulisani Mathugana for Brian Mavhungu later in the game.

Black Leopards to add woes to struggling Cosmos
The coach of Phungo All Stars, Moses Muthelo, poses for a photo with the goal scorers, Ivan Mahangwahaya (left) and Justice Rasebotse (two), after the game.
If things go according to the plans of the coach of Black Leopards, Mr Vladislav Heric, his team will collect more league points at the expense of Jomo Cosmos next Tuesday evening. The two teams meet in an Absa Premiership League match at the Giyani Stadium. According to Heric, they only celebrated their 1-0 victory last Sunday over
Amazulu on Monday and started with their preparations for their all-important fixture against Cosmos on Tuesday morning. Cosmos are still to win a league match this season. They have accumulated four points from 11 outings to date. A win for Leopards will push them three steps up the ladder. Heric said that his aim was to see Leopards finish their league programme within the Top 8 bracket. The game will
start at 19:30. Seven matches will be played the following day, Wednesday November 30. The fixtures are: Lamontville Golden Arrows vs Moroka Swallows; Platinum Stars vs Amazulu; Bloemfontein Celtic vs Bidvest Wits; Orlando Pirates vs Ajax Cape Town; Santos vs Mamelodi Sundowns; Kaizer Chiefs vs Supersport United and Maritzburg United vs Free State Stars.

RO United in regional final Tshakhuma RO United booked a place in the regional final of the Nedbank Cup by beating Western Stars 2-0 at a packed FNB Makwarela Stadium on Sunday afternoon. As if they were hypnotized, the strikers of Western Stars were looking weary from the first whistle. United failed to capitalise, allowing Stars to gain momentum. The keeper of United, Ligwaza Sigaba, made his presence felt when he stretched to the limit to palm Percy Munonoka’s volley away for a corner kick. United opened their account in the 28th minute. Their overlapping midfielder, Ndivhuwo Makhado, beat the offside trap and headed home easily. Western Stars realised that it was not their day when they missed a fortune seven minutes later. A defender
of United, Asivhanzhi Muthubi, handled the ball within his own penalty box. The referee, Mr Dion Mphuma, wasted no time to point at the white spot for a penalty, but Pfano Sithuga caused an upset by shooting far wide. Western Stars were the first to effect a change to their starting line-up. They replaced Robie Munonoka and Petrus Rasilingwane with Tshimangadzo Masala and Dolphus Rambau respectively. United responded by introducing Victor Mukhaukhau for Vhutshilo Nkhumeleni. United increased the margin via Ipfi Muthubi, who unleashed from the left corner. Mashudu Nembilwi of United was warned with a card for obstruction on Percy Munonoka, and Munonoka was given his marching orders in the 78th minute for using foul language at the assistant referee.
Khathutshelo Mudau of United (left) and Oscar Ramantswana of Western Stars both go for the high ball.

Troubled Basel to face Rospa Malamulele Stadium is expected to be packed to capacity on Sunday afternoon. That is where the muchawaited Vodacom Promotional League match between Rospa United and FC Basel will take place. Things are not going according to plan in the Basel camp. They are still battling to register their first victory of the season, despite the fact that they have a number of experienced players in their show room. Some of the players who boost a wealth of experience include the former Black Leopards striker, Jafta Mabosho, as well as Phumudzo Mafukata and Tsepo Phelwane. Rospa United have been blowing hot and cold in the past weeks. It remains to be seen whether the defence of Basel will have the power to stop the United strikers, Mashudu Masha-
pha, Happy Mahuntsi and Sibusiso Shabangu. The match between Modimolle Aces and Phungo All Stars, which was supposed to be played at the Ephraim Mohale Stadium in Modimolle, has been postponed to a later date. Modimolle Aces will be engaged in a Nedbank Cup match this weekend. Winners Park will undertake a journey to Tzaneen for the match against Blue Rocks at the Nkowankowa Stadium. Super Eagles will enjoy the home-ground advantage in their match against Lephalale Young Killers. Mighty FC will host Fanang Diatla at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane. Mighty are unpredictable, as their work-rate changes from time to time. The Dolphins and Magezi FC will meet at the Seshego open grounds.

Nobela and Dolphins in Nedbank clash
Tshakhuma RO United have good reason to rejoice. The managing director of the Thohoyandoubased financial services provider, Globe Finance, Mr Apie Saayman, responded to the request for a donation by the club by donating a complete soccer kit and 20 soccer bibs to the team. The ceremony during which the kit was handed over to the club was held at the team’s home ground, Malaria ground, last Friday afternoon. The team was in their new colours when they beat Western Stars 2-0 in their Nedbank Cup competition match at the FNB Makwarela Stadium on Saturday. By Kaizer Nengovhela
Midoroni Real Hearts through to semi’s Midoroni Real Hearts hammered Madombidzha Celtic 5-3 in the last eight of the prestigious Altec Auto Page Sir Tshiluvhu KO Zoutpansberg stream match played at the Tshiozwi Grounds on Saturday. Real Hearts were all over their opponents from the start of the match. Mulalo Kharivha of Hearts capitalised on a clearing blunder by the sweeper of
Rendani Munyai to hook in the loose ball. The eighth minute saw the Celtic playmaker, Thabo Mamburu, leaving the pitch after sustaining an injury. He was replaced with Maxwell Ramunyuwa. The absence of Thabo was one of the main reasons for the lacklustre performance of Celtic. The keeper of Celtic, Emmanuel Mashamba, missed the ball in the 26th minute, resulting in
Phumudzo Thavhulo's releasing a ground cutter from short range. The score was 2-0 at half time. Realizing that their scoring chances were slim, the Celtic technical stafff introduced Khathutshelo Tshisimba for Thabo Mamburu , who was looking weary. Aston Masase reduced the score when he scored from a corner kick. Steven Thavhiwa increased the tally in the 48th minute, after poor clearing by the Celtic defence. Aston Masase scored the second goal of his team in the 64th minute. Masase blasted in after a place kick that was taken by Thomani Mudau. The defender of Hearts Rudzani Mphaphuli handled the ball inside of his penalty area and the referee pointed to the white spot. Unfortunately, Rendani Munyai shot wide from the spot. Phumudzo Thavhulo scored his team's fourth goal after a scramble in the penalty area. Aston Mamburu then collected the ball from Nwako Mametja in the middle of the park to finish off superbly and completed his hat-trick. The last goal of the match and fifth goal of Teddy Thavhiwa (left) and Aston Masase are waiting for the ball to land. Real Hearts was scored by Teddy Thavhulo.

Last grasp victory for Leopards A last-gasp goal by a Black Leopards replacement, Luyolo Mapolisa, caused huge celebrations in the Lidoda Duvha camp. The team registered only their second victory of the season when they narrowly beat Amazulu 1-0 in their Absa Premiership League match at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban on Sunday afternoon. Lidoda Duvha meant business from the onset. They came close to scoring three minutes into the game. Captain Mongezi Bobe unleashed from the edge of the penalty box, but the ball did not Bongani Mbele of Amazulu and Mongezi Bobe of Black Leopards in have enough power to beat the keeper. action during the PSL game at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban. that their Nigerian striker, Joshua Obaje, was looking weary, the team’s head coach, Vladislav Heric, replaced him with Bennedict Vilakazi early in the second half. Leopards’ right back, Moses Kwena, was reprimanded with a card for a late tackle on Stanton Lewis. The home side strengthened their midfield by introducing Tangeni Siphahu at the expense of Tansang Tenyise in the 58th minute. Mahlatse Maake, Leopards’ diminutive striker, went into the referee’s book for handling the ball intentionally. Maake was replaced with Luyolo Mapolisa soon afterwards. The hosts regrouped from behind and forced the visitors to play defensive football. Amazulu effected
another change to their starting line-up, by replacing Dumisani Zwane with Bongani Mbele. Lidoda Duvha’s killer goal came in the second minute of the referee’s optional time. Khethowakhe Masuku intercepted after a back pass by Stanton Lewis. Instead of unleashing from outside the box, Masuku shared his fortune with Luyolo Mapolisa, who beat the keeper with a ground cutter. As a time-wasting strategy, Leopards introduced David Zulu and called Khethowakhe Masuku off. Leopards’ Malawian international, Harry Nyirenda, was the Man of the Match.
