“Is it wrong for me to speak out about the problems affecting Musina FM? Why should the EFF members start bombarding me with death threats?” he said. “The three men even sent me their pic­ tures and instructed me to take it to the police and the media.

But, really, is this how things should be?”

Hulumeni stated that the worst and most dangerous “death threats” had come from the radio station’s treasurer, Mr Jealous Munyai, who said that he was hunting him down, so that he could do to him what would be an example even for other people who wanted to misbehave like him.

“I am not afraid of death, and I am not afraid of any of those individuals,” said Hulumeni. “I will continue to speak the truth.

If they want to kill me, they should come and do so, so long as they are killing me for telling the truth.”

Mr Jealous Munyai vehe­ mently denied this week that he had threatened Hulumeni.

He said that he was shocked to hear that Hulumeni saw him as part of the enemy.

Munyai stated that the “big­ gest problem” with Hulumeni was that he refused to accept advice from other people.

“We met some two months ago at the station to resolve some challenges that Musi­ na FM is currently striving towards addressing, as this was a requirement from ICASA, but then he sent in an apology at the last minute, which showed that he was not interested in addressing the challenges of the station,” Munyai said.

“He and his friends had on two occasions disrupted the

station’s meetings. I told him that that was not the right thing to do, and that if he felt that there was a problem that he had identified, he must rather bring it to the table, so that we can tackle it. Maybe I was wrong in advising him like that,” he said.

Musina FM has had to fend off allegations of maladmin­ istration, mismanagement and the misuse of funds over the past few months. Munyai, however, denied that any of the funds allocated to the station by the Media Development and Diversity Agency (MDDA) had been misused. The MDDA allegedly funded the station to the amount of R2 560 600.

“Victor will never get to un­ derstand this truth if he still re­ fuses to sit down with us as the

community station,” Munyai said. “There are some details which we cannot divulge, since the MDDA contractual agreement is confidential. He says the station does not have a full board of directors – but then, where is he when we hold the meetings to address such issues?”

Hulumeni said he was going to lay criminal charges against Munyai and the three EFF members who are “hunting him down” to “kill” him.

Meanwhile, ICASA’s com­ munications manager, Paseka Maleka, said that they were working towards resolving the challenges affecting Musina FM, to ensure that the station was finally assisted in comply­ ing with its licence terms and conditions.

Local artists scoop up LIMA awards

By Mbulaheni Ridovhona Artists from the Vhembe District returned with three awards from the Limpopo Music Awards (LIMA) that were held at Meropa Casino Hotel in Polokwane on Saturday.

With his album Seasons, Kingdmusic was awarded the prize for the Best Contem­ porary Gospel Album, while Ndivhuho NL won the Best Jazz Album award with his album Thungununu. Acolly Mandisa won the Best Tshiven­ da Single award with his song Shambo le Shambo.

Speaking to Limpopo Mirror, Kingdmusic said: “I feel so humbled, because I was nominated with some of the heavyweights in the gospel

music industry. I’d like to thank all my friends, family and everyone who voted for me.

Thank you for supporting what God is doing through me.”

The talented jazz artist Ndivhuho NL said that he was delighted to have won the award. “This is a record to me, because this is the third award I’ve won this year. I feel like a living legend, celebrated while still alive. I thank everyone for spending their airtime to vote for me. God is the answer of all my success.”

The overall objective of the LIMAs is to encourage local artists to go beyond their passion for music and produce music that meets the highest standard. It also serves as rec­ ognition for their hard work.

Grade 11 pupils from different secondary schools in the Sinthumule area attended a career-guidance event held at Ravele Community Hall last Friday. Mr Tebogo “Jackie” Musina of the Pfunzo Yalushaka Foundation told learners that “the high failure rate is caused by a lack of proper career guidance”. During the event, learners were provided with information on universities, colleges, course programmes, financial aid, bursary schemes and training opportunities. Mr Bonginkosi Dladlama from Vhembe FET advised pupils that a poor family background did not mean that they could not reach for the sky. “Some of us were born and raised in poor backgrounds, where our parents could not afford education for their children.

With good matric results, some bursaries are up for grabs. You must not be proud of your parent’s qualifications, but rather be boasting of your own,” he said. The guest speaker, Adv Sidwell Sikhwari, advised pupils to have a study timetable that states when and what they would be studying. “It can help you feel more organised and more at ease. Also make sure not to try and memorise and parrot-learn everything, but instead strive to actually understand subjects. Healthy eating habits are a priority during the exams,” he said. The spokesperson for the Vhembe District Municipality, Mr Matodzi Ralushai, said the application forms were obtainable from the office of

the executive mayor. The clos­ ing date for applications is 29 November 2019.

According to Ralushai, the Executive Mayor Bursary Fund has set aside R3,5 million for this purpose. It makes provi­ sion for bursaries of up to R30 000 for university students and R15 000 for TVT College stu­ dents. Preference will be given to students studying for degrees or diplomas in fields such as Hydrology and Water Manage­ ment, Environmental/Disaster/

Waste Management, Regional and Town Planning, Engineer­ ing (Civil/Electrical/ Mining), Finance/Business Management and Tourism.

Tshivenda novel “Murabeli” launched in Johannesburg

By Tshifhiwa Mukwevho Phathutshedzo Mamafha, who authored Restoring Humanity some years ago, has just published a Tshivenda novel, Murabeli, that was recently launched at the Johannesburg City Library.

Based on the author's real­life experi­ ences, Murabeli tells the story of a young girl whose mother died when she was still very young. She grows up living with her father and paternal grandmother. When her father brings home a new wife who comes along with two children of her age, Murabeli is happy that she now has a 'mother' and siblings.

However, the 'mother' turns out to be a monster who also encourages her two children to abuse Murabeli.

“Murabeli cannot understand her painful situation in that when she looks around to families where there are new 'mothers' or new 'fathers', she sees unity, harmony and peace,” Mamafha said. “This only tells that while there are bad step­ mothers, there are also good stepmothers on the other hand.”

The trials and tribulations that Mura­ beli has to face are many, and she devotes herself to God through the assistance of prayerful people around her, and that is how she manages to have focus in life.

“Murabeli is not the only character in the book, so there's more to the story than just Murabeli,” he said. “People will surely enjoy reading this book.”

As for motivation, the author quoted Trevor Noah, who said that the “limit of your imagination will determine how far you can go”.

He said the launch had gone very well.

“Speakers such as Mpho Ramathuthu, Richard Rambau and Pastor Matamela Muvhango, on behalf of Apostle (Dr) NA Mudau, addressed the issues tackled in the book and other social matters.”

Murabeli is published by Vhakololo Press, a publishing company aiming to publish 15 books in Tshivenda by June 2020. In manuscript form, Murabeli was named finalist in the Sanlam Prize for Youth Literature 2017.

Manyisa and Mazwale team up for musical project

The vibey song was pre­released recently on Nzhelele FM and the Siloam area, before its release later this month. According to Manyi­ sa, Ritsa na bada is a song for December, and it could not have been released at a better time than in October, when all artists are on the move to entertain their fans with megahits. “It is a great song, which will keep people dancing and awake all night into the New Year,” he said. “Working with Mazwale is a blessing in that she knows her voice and what she is capa­ ble of achieving with it.”

Manyisa's passion for music started at a very young age and eventually led him to Johan­ nesburg, where he opened a music stable, Manyisa Records, which manages artists, hosts shows, and provides music and dance services.

“We are aiming high for this song, and we are so sure about its quality,” Manyisa said.

A week-long trip by listeners of Phalaphala FM to Vietnam proved to be a once-in-alifetime experience.

“The 2019 tour to Vietnam was undertaken in line with the traditions of the station, where we visit places with our listeners on a regular basis and undertake an annual overseas trip,” said the programme manager of the station, Ms Sharon Ravele.

She explained that the station started with the annual listeners’ tour in 1991 as a way of demonstrating the buying potential of the station’s audience. The station also wanted to establish an emotional bond with its listeners.

“Potential tourists are presented with alternative destinations and decide on the place, based on the price of the trip and interest shown by the audience. The listeners pay for the trip, accommodation and meals,” she said.

Ravele added that the places visited since 1991 include the Portuguese Islands, Thailand, Malaysia, Turkey, Argentina, Brazil, Greece, Thailand, Spain and France. “Learning from these wonderful countries contributed to the advancement of the entrepreneurial outlook of our people,” she said.

Listeners were in unison in confirming that the experience during the Vietnam tour was better than ever. Ravele said that Phalaphala FM managed to give the listeners an experience of the personal feel of the brand and engaged with the listeners on a personal basis, thereby creating emotional bonds and building long-term relationships.

Jahzo, who hails from Thohoy­ andou, said that he fell in love with dancehall music during his days studying at Varsity College in Cape Town. "I have been listening to dancehall music since 1999 and I have fallen in love with the music due to its uniqueness and message.

I grew up listening to the music of Anthony B, Assassin, Buju Banton and Capleton," Jahzo said.

In 2006, Jahzo relocated to Jo­ hannesburg where he met with his brother, better known as Major.

In 2007, they came up with the idea to become partners and start a recording label called Rudebwoy Entertainment. In 2008, Jahzo recorded his first dancehall song at Rudebwoy Entertainment studios on which he featured Major and Selector O’ Jugglin. That was when Jahzo realized that he could contribute towards South African dancehall music.

In 2010, Jahzo started working on his single, called Dem ah fraud, which was then released in 2011.

and played on local radio stations such as Phalaphala FM and YFM. A music video for Dem ah fraud was shot in 2012 and was released in 2013.

In 2014 and 2015, I released the singles Step weh from bottom and Burn dem, which were both pro­ duced by Flyweh Records in Cape Town," Jahzo said.

Last year, he released a 17­track EP called The Intro that is still available for free downloading on his website Jahzomusic.com. "This EP was to set the tone in terms of my versatility and what I have to offer going forward," he said.

"I have been involved in the music industry for more than 10 years. It’s therefore fitting for me to release my debut album.

The day was characterised by traditional dances, singing, and speeches by cultural and academic experts. Some Makhubele members had even come all the way from Mozambique and Zimbabwe,

Meanwhile, the clan presented R5 000 cheques to five schools within the Collins Chabane municipal area, requesting that the money be awarded to the best Grade 12 performers.

“We appreciate the kind of good work that the Makhubele clan are doing not only in our area but through­ out South Africa,” said the mayor of the Collins Chabane Municipality, Mr Moses Maluleke.

The clan’s spokesperson, Mr Mlungisi Mgabani, said that the clan was also working hard to fight against xeno­ phobia, and that was another reason why they were extend­ ing the event to Mozambique.

MEC launches Mapungubwe Arts Festival 2019

The MEC for Sports, Arts and Culture, Ms Thandi Moraka officially launched the Mapungubwe Arts Festival.

Limpopo’s Department of Sport, Arts and Culture promised that this year’s Mapungubwe Arts Festival will be bigger and better than ever before.

The Limpopo MEC for Sports, Arts and Culture, Ms Thandi Moraka, launched the festival during a special event on Monday at the Mapungubwe World Heritage Site.

The annual festival will take place at the old Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane from 12 to 15 December. Apart from entertainment, the festival aims to introduce aspirant artists to the world of music as they are given an opportunity to perform and showcase their talent.

During the Mapungubwe Arts Festival, the cultural heritage of South Africa is celebrated for the purpose of setting a stage for both renowned and the upcoming artists through exhibitions, plays and dramas, and it includes a gospel and jazz festival. “We promote Mapungubwe as a renowned World Heritage Site in our province, because of the rich history in this area,” said Moraka.

Different groups from the Vatsonga, Bapedi and Vhavenda participated and performed their cultural dances. Not even the soaring heat could stop a large crowd from gathering for a day of cultural festivities.

He stressed the fact that immorality is the enemy of traditional leaders, since people have moved away from good morals. He further encouraged community members to be proud of their cultural practices. Sadiki said that it was very important in that it reminded the youth of where they came from.

the cradle of humankind and therefore, no matter if you are white or black or any other colour, you are human, and your roots go back to Africa,” he said.

He emphasised that tradition made people what they were. “If we lose our tradition and lose our identity, we consequently have to remind ourselves where we are coming from. Because that is the basis that determines where we are going. If this doesn’t happen, we can consider ourselves lost.”

He said that people must start practising “our culture of being proud, so that our children will grow up knowing their identity”. He outlined that, in a

He urged everyone to be united in the preservation of culture and encouraged families to teach their young ones the history of the Vhavenda people, so that it would not be forgotten.

Matsila described it as sad that

children and even some parents seemed to be proud of the fact that their children could not pronounce words in their own vernacular but only spoke English at home. “Let us invest in our children and, by doing so, we will be investing in the future of the country,” he said.

He emphasised the importance of special cultural days and said that a nation without respect for its culture was doomed and had no fu-

ture. “Other nations have their special days to celebrate their culture.

We cannot be left behind, and we will continue to be in the forefront of cultural revival,” he said.

Matsila further encouraged community members to be proud of their cultural practices. “By doing so, it will assist in the government’s drive to restore the community’s morals and culture,” he said.

He commended Chief Livhuwani Matsila for the initiative of reviving culture through traditional dances.

Sekoati added that a need existed to teach young children about the value of culture and the importance of restoring it. “Culture and tradition are the foundation on which the prosperity of each nation starts,” he said. He commended the organisers of the event for their vision.

Vhembe Executive Mayor Dowelani Nenguda said that he was extremely

proud of his culture, adding that Chief Matsila and Phalaphala FM radio station were assisting in restoring the culture and dignity of the Vhavenda, Vatsonga and Bapedi people.

The chairperson of the Board of the National Lotteries Commission, Prof Alfred Nevhutanda, said that people must start practising “our culture of being proud, so that our children will grow up knowing their identity”. Residents of Gogobole attended a joyous and festgive event a few weeks ago when Mr Johannes Thengwana turned 80. His children and grandchildren decided to organise a birthday party to honour him. “Today I am a very happy person as my grandchildren showed me that they really and truly love me,” Thengwana said. Residents from the Masisi area received a refreshing gift, just in time for the hot summer days, with the opening of the first water park.

For years community members of the remote Masisi village and surrounding areas had to travel for hours to other villages just to find a place where they could entertain themselves and swim under the hot Venda sun. This was especially problematic during school holidays or during the much-anticipated December festive season.

The Mooiberge Water Park that has opened in Masisi means that local people no longer have to travel far for this kind of relaxation, which is also contributing to the reduction in fatal road accidents.

Ms Joyce Mudau said she was very happy that they no

longer had to travel far just to have family picnics or braais, as they could now do so right there in Masisi. “The roads during festive seasons and hol­ idays are not safe because most people are drunk and they drive recklessly,” she said.

The young Thabelo Mu­ laudzi (11) said that he enjoyed

swimming, but his parents did not allow him to swim in rivers, because they were rumoured to contain crocodiles. “I love swimming and I want to swim for the national team one day. I believe that my dream will now come true because I have a safe place where I can practice my swimming skills,” he said.

Well-known local gospel artist, Emmanuel Mamphogoro laid to rest

By Silas Nduvheni The mayor of Makhado Local Municipality, Samuel Munyai, described the late gospel artist, Mr Emmanuel Azwihangwisi Mamphogoro (48), as a giant of gospel music in the Vhembe region. He said that he had also played a pivotal role in producing and recording music of other artists.

The funeral ceremony was attended by hundreds of peo­ ple, including various artists.

Mamphogoro was later laid to rest at the Nzhelele-Migavhini cemetery.

During the proceedings his only son, Ipfi Mamphogoro, was supposed to speak, but he was too overcome by emotion.

His message was later read by a cousin, Dan Mamphogoro.

Mamphogoro passed away on Thursday, 10 October, at the Netcare hospital in Polokwane, after a short illness.

When reading the obitu­ ary, Mr Nicky Maphaha said Mamphogoro had enrolled for a diploma in sound engineering at the Matador College in Gauteng in 1993. In 1995, he joined the South African Police Services where he worked until 2018, when he resigned to focus on

music.

He was nominated for an SABC Crown Gospel Award in the category for Best Sound Engineer in 2014 and 2015 respectively and he walked away with the award both years.

“His engineering work was not only confined to South Afri­ ca’s borders but had transcend­ ed to international frontiers in countries such as Swaziland and Namibia. Before his untimely death, he was preparing to go to the United Kingdom with the Zaza and the Urban Brew crew,” said Maphaha.

He was also a staunch mem­ ber of the Vine Yard Mission Centre under Pastor Muhovha of Nzhelele-Ha-Raliphaswa village.

He leaves behind his wife, Windy, and child, Ipfi, mother Ms Flora Mamphogoro and siblings.

Sawmilling Learnership Programme - 2020

Applications are invited from unemployed youth who wish to pursue a career in Sawmilling. The suitable candidates will be granted an opportunity to attend a 12 months National Certificate: Saw Doctoring NQF level 2 Learnership Programme. Learners will be studying and doing practicals at Timbadola Training Centre situated in Levubu, Limpopo Province, to complete both the theoretical and practical components of the Learnership.

Upon successful completion of the Learnership, learners will receive a nationally recognised qualification (National Certificate: Saw Doctoring NQF 2). Learners will gain work experience that will improve their chances of employment with Sawmilling and Furniture Making companies and also provide opportunities to set up their own small business. Learners will also gain links with employment networks to get jobs.

A monthly stipend will be allocated to learners for the duration of the Learnership. When making the final selection preference will be given to previously disadvantaged individuals i.e. people living with disabilities, females & youth from communities adjacent to SAFCOL plantations and communities we have signed social compacts with.

Minister Cele calls on women and children to break silence on violence

By Kaizer Nengovhela The Minister of Police, Bheki Cele, called on women and children to break the silence against abuse. During his visit to Louis Trichardt two weeks ago, he said that domestic and sexual violence against women and children remained a major cause for concern.

Cele said the solution was to take gender­based violence seriously in homes and communities to make sure everyone understood the problem and held the government accountable. He further encouraged women and children to act and break the silence in order to reduce the unacceptable behaviour towards women and children.

“A number of women are involved in abusive relationships, but they don’t speak out. Our SAPS is here to help you to overcome the abusive rela­ tionships,” he said.

Cele said men who raped and murdered women and children were cowards who were controlled by evil spirits and drugs. “They deserve to be locked up for good. We don’t want them to return to the community.”

“The most common types of abuse are physical, sexual and emotional (or psychological) abuse,” said Cele. Most cases of domestic violence and sexual abuse in South Africa go unreported. “We

need to engage traditional leaders as much as we can. There is no ‘correct’ way for victims to respond to or feel about abuse,” Cele said.

“People who are abused also experience confu­ sion, fear, hopelessness, helplessness and shame.

Another good way of highlighting issues of child and woman abuse is to speak with the women and children themselves on how they should act against any kind of abuse,” Cele said.

“I further urge all victims of abuse to report all incidents to the police,” he said. “Even when the abuser is the sole breadwinner in your house, re­ port them to the police because that person might end up killing you and your children, and that’s what we hate to see as the police.”

DA calls for a register of the corrupt officers The Democratic Alliance (DA) said on Monday they would write to the MEC for Transport, Mr Dickson Masemola, to recommend the introduction of a register of offenders for all traffic officials and officials who commit serious transgressions or violate the law.

This comes after several recent cases of traffic officers and officials who have been arrested for crimes such as bribery and corruption.

Last Wednesday, the Hawks’ Serious Corrup­ tion Investigation unit, in collaboration with the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) and the Special Investigative Unit (SIU), arrest­ ed 10 suspects at a privately owned vehicle test­ ing station in Marble Hall as part of Operation Corolla. The suspects allegedly used the identity particulars of unsuspecting individuals to issue roadworthy certificates for scores of vehicles that were never brought to the station for physical examination.

On Monday, 14 October, the Hawks (again in conjunction with the RTMC and SIU) also arrested four Phalala Vehicle Testing Station officials, three of whom were re­arrested for allegedly continuing to issue fraudulent vehicle roadworthy certificates. The three suspects were previously arrested on 9 April this year by the same team for allegedly also using the identity particulars of unsuspecting victims to authorise roadworthy certificates for vehicles that were never physically subjected to mandatory tests.

On 12 April, they were each granted R1 000 bail and warned not to commit similar offenses.

Closer to home, in March and April this year, the Hawks arrested eight suspects from the Thusalushaka Testing Station in Musina on sim­ ilar charges of issuing roadworthy certificates for vehicles that were never subjected to mandatory tests.

The DA said in their press release that these arrests showed that the Limpopo Province was currently facing a mounting challenge of traffic officials and officers who had turned to corrupt or fraudulent activities to supplement their income and this was unacceptable. They argued that a register to keep record of all these transgressions was necessary to help keep the roads safe. “The register will assist the depart­ ment to keep record of all officers found guilty of serious transgressions or crimes and will also assist in monitoring whether officials who are found guilty have been subjected to consequence management or proper disciplinary action,” the press release reads.

According to the DA, the register would also help the department identify the municipalities that have serious problems in terms of corrupt officers and fraud and allow for intervention to address the problem. “Corruption cannot be allowed in our traffic law enforcement in Limpo­ po. The issuing of falsified or bogus roadworthy certificates and officials who accept bribes and are corrupt can lead to the loss of lives on our roads and there is a need to prevent this. The DA is committed to rooting out corruption and ensuring that Limpopo roads are safe for all who use them,” states the DA. What remains to be seen, however, is how many of the arrested suspects will end up being prosecuted successfully. This after it came to light that all charges against the eight accused in the Musina case had been provisionally with­ drawn. “Provisionally withdrawn simply means that the case will temporarily be put aside until all the instructions are complied with or attend­ ed to,” explained Hawks spokesperson Captain Matimba Maluleke upon enquiry.

Makhado to install pre-paid meters at all single-phase households

By Andries van Zyl A new initiative by the Makhado Municipality may soon obviate the need for residents of the town to dispute amounts claimed for electricity supply.

The municipality gave notice last week to all existing single­phase, conventional electricity consumers in Louis Trichardt that they will replace all existing single­phase electricity meters with prepaid power­line communi­ cation meters. “The main aim of this project is to enhance the municipality’s revenue and avoid unnecessary billing and energy­loss challenges,” stated the municipality.

The municipality indicated that the project had already commenced with the actual work on site to start in November this year. The project will continue until June 2020 and beyond from the old town in the west, proceed­ ing to the new extension in the east.

As part of the project, the municipality stated, individual interruptions of the electricity supply will take place as and when the meters will be replaced.

This initiative definitely comes as

good news for local taxpayers fed­up with having to spend hours in queues at the municipality to sort out erroneous charges on their monthly accounts. But who is going to pay for this, many might ask?

According to municipal spokesperson Mr Louis Bobodi, the initiative is an in­house project and was not contract­ ed out to any outside company. “The materials will be acquired through the normal procurement processes,” said Bobodi.

Bobodi said that, depending on the quantities, the cost to the municipality to install each meter would be about R1 500. This includes labour and transport costs. Asked if the municipality had money available for the project and whether they had budgeted for this am­ bitious project, Bobodi confirmed that the project had been budgeted for in the 2019/2020 capital expenditure budget.

At a practical level, Bobodi said, me­ ters would be relocated to the pavement and customers would be given a keypad to plug in. Further good news is that customers will be able to buy electricity online, thus also avoiding a trip to the municipal offices.

One of the questions not answered

by Bobodi was how the project would affect people with existing pre­paid meters at their homes. The municipality did, however, state that all customers’ current deposits would remain, but that basic charges would fall away. “The tariff shall still be on an incline block for residential and business tariffs as the case may be. Each affected customer will have to be re­registered on the fi­ nancial system as a pre­paid customer,” said the municipality.

Asked whether the project would be extended to Tshikota and Eltivillas, Bobodi indicated that Tshikota already made use of pre­paid metres and that the project would extend to other parts of the town.

The good news also came with a warning. “No guarantee can be given that the electricity supply will be inter­ rupted during the entire specified time.

The electricity supply to certain parts of the electricity network may be restored earlier or later than the specified time.

All consumers are therefore warned that the council’s electrical lines must be considered live during the entire project period. The execution of the project will be subject to good weather conditions,” said the municipality.

Madi a Thavha wins a BASA award

By Tshifhiwa Mukwevho Madi a Thavha Mountain Lodge and CraftArt Centre walked away with a Cultural Tourism Award for their sterling work in the promotion of the arts of Limpopo artists during the 22nd annual Business and Arts South Africa (BASA) awards, which were held in Johannesburg on 13 October.

The Cultural Tourism Award is for business support of arts and culture projects that contribute towards the growth of communities and jobs and support the opportu­ nities provided by local tourism.

“We proudly announce that we are the winner of the BASA’s Cultural Tourism award,” said Madi a Thavha’s Marcelle Bosch.

“We entered the awards because of the partnership between Madi a Thavha Mountain Lodge in Limpo­ po, our CraftArt centre at Victoria Yards in Joburg and the Venda and Tsonga artisans in Northern Limpopo.”

Bosch said that they felt so grate­ ful that they had been recognised for their efforts in initiating inno­ vative product development and creating market access opportu­ nities with the Northern Limpopo artisans. “We organise arts and

culture tour programmes to the rural villages and present and sell heritage­inspired arts and crafts products at Madi a Thavha Moun­ tain Lodge and our CraftArt centre at Victoria Yards,” she said. “We are also grateful towards the National Arts Council of South Africa, who contributed to our support of the Limpopo artisans.”

She stated that, from her expe­ rience, Limpopo artists worked very much in isolation and Madi a Thavha would like to give them more exposure, especially via Madi a Thavha CraftArt centre at Victoria Yards in Lorentzville, Joburg.

“In Lorentzville, we promote and sell the arts and crafts of the Limpopo artisans. We also organise artists­in­residence programmes to connect rural and urban artists.”

Madi a Thavha further organises programmes for Limpopo artisans to spend a week in Johannesburg to present and sell their work at Victoria Yards. “In this space, they exhibit their work and give demon­ strations of their work and meet with the Joburg public,” she said.

“We also visit art galleries, meet with artists, visit CraftArt shops and material supply shops. In this way, our artists get new inspira­ tion and learn more about art and design trends.”

The soccer team of Tshikota High School were crowned as the new champions of the Soccer Marathon tournament after beating Clapham High from Gauteng 2-0 in the final at the Oscar Mphetha Stadium grounds at the University of Limpopo a fortnight ago.

The team won R20 000, a trophy, gold medals and a soccer kit. The tour­ nament drew entries from 16 schools from Gauteng and Limpopo.

This is the second big prize that the Tshikota High team has won in the past few months. Last month the team went through to the national round of the Safa Sanlam Kay Motsepe Cup, which was played in Bloemfontein.

The local lads managed to end fifth overall in this prestigious competition.

They collected R100 000 for their efforts.

The Sinthumule/Kutama Community Sport Development initiative invites teams from around Vhembe to register for the seventh annual Soccer Challenge Top 32, which will take place during the festive season.

According to the spokesperson for the or­ ganisers, Mr Elvis Phathela, they will cater for soccer, netball and U/15 teams from around Sinthumule and Kutama.

The joining fee for soccer teams is R1 300 per team and the first prize is R20 000, a floating trophy, gold medals and a new soccer kit. The second prize is R8 000, silver medals and a new soccer kit, while the third prize is R5 000, bronze medals and a new soccer kit. The team that will finish in fourth place will receive R4 000 and a new soccer kit.

The teams ending in fifth to eighth position will get R2 000 each. The eight teams defeat­ ed in the second and first round will receive between R1 500 and R500 each.

The joining fee for the netball Top 8 competi­ tion is R500. The prizes in the netball competi­ tion are R3 000 and gold medals (first), R1 500 and silver medals (second) R1 000 and bronze medals (third), R600 (fourth), while the last four teams will each receive R300.
