By Elmon Tshikhudo and Anton The staff members working at the Dzanani Royal Palace have become the latest collateral damage in the Vhavenda leadership struggle. The 16 staff members have not been paid since April this year, seemingly in an effort to force the Mphephu royal family to choose a successor. The decision of the Limpopo Department of Cooperative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs (Coghsta) to stop paying salaries only came to the fore two weeks ago. A meeting was scheduled for 16 August at the palace to discuss the issue but was cancelled after Coghsta was told doing so would undermine the The spokesperson for Coghsta in Limpopo, Hitekani Magwedze, confirmed that payments to the workers had stopped. He said that the contracts of the staff members had lapsed and had not been renewed this financial year.
“The department is not legally obliged to pay salaries until a recognised king or queen has been appointed. The new incumbent would then have to appoint staff and submit their contracts to the department, so that salaries could be paid,” he said. Coghsta has, however, been criticised for not being consistent in its actions since Toni Mphephu Ramabulana was stripped of his title in the Constitutional Court in November last year. Initially, the department continued paying Toni’s salary of roughly R1,2 million per year. In December last year, the Limpopo Mirror reported on a R5,7 million security contract awarded by Coghsta for Toni’s protection, which not only included the royal palace, but also his house in Louis Trichardt.InFebruary this year, rumours started surfacing that Toni’s salary payments had stopped. At the time, a spokesperson for Coghsta, Ms Tsakani Baloyi, confirmed that the department had stopped all the benefits, but she was very evasive when asked about whether benefits would be paid to a person appointed in a temporary capacity. “The support provided by government to traditional leaders is regulated by the Framework on Tools of Trade for Qualifying Traditional Leaders,” she said, without providing clarity. In a letter written to Coghsta in July, the spokesperson for the royal family, Mr Ntsieni Ramabulana, complained that the relevant MEC, Basikopo Makamu, was not honouring his promises. He referred to a meeting held on 11 February this year during which Makamu had assured them that the office in the royal house would not close down because of the ruling in the Constitutional Court. “He indicated that the court matter involved only one individual and the staff would not be affected and thus should work as usual,” Ramabulana said. In a letter written on behalf of all the staff members, this sentiment was echoed. “(W)e strongly feel that the statement of the MEC was correct when he stated that the court matter does not affect the staff and therefore we should not be disadvantaged by the recognition process as we are not part of the process but merely workers in the Kingship office,” they wrote. The optimism among staff members that the situation could be resolved, was clearly misplaced. At the end of March this year, the staff members were notified that: “Payments on contracts cannot be implemented until we receive a confirmation of recognition of the heir apparent. You will be receiving a formal letter once (it) is signed by theThisHOD.”adversely affected the staff and their families as they could not fulfil their financial obligations. One of the affected staff members is 54-year-old Mr William Mukwevho, who works in the protocol division. “We have faithfully served this institution for years, for the benefit of the Vhavenda people, and all of a sudden our salaries are stopped. We have families and ourselves to take care of, and how are we to continue with our lives without salaries?” he said.Ramabulana said that the staff members were very unfortunate to be caught up in the crossfire. “We have deliberated on this issue with government, but this has borne no fruits so far. The staff members have faithfully kept the office running as there are important services to be rendered for the Vhavenda people. Moreover, these people have families to look after and need transport to and from work. We hope government will resolve the issue and the staff get their salaries soon, and if not, we will be forced to seek guidance from our lawyers to force government to pay,” he said.

In an attempt to create awareness among school-going children about the dangers of trusting and accepting lifts from strangers, the SAPS Thohoyandou Women’s Network visited Thambatshira Secondary School in Tshisahulu last Friday (19th). The officers were accompanied by the acting station commander, Col Balanganani Monica Nemavho la, while they interacted with the learners. The children were given tips on how to keep themselves safe amid spiralling crime (which is mostly directed at girls). Speaking during the visit, Col Nemavhola advised learners to be vigilant and always on the lookout for strangers around them. “The Thohoyandou area has become a rich hunting ground for criminals, and things are getting out of hand as these criminals are now targeting girls. Over the past few weeks, we have witnessed an increase in the disappearance of girls on their way to and from school. This is a source for great concern for all of us. We as women feel that we cannot just sit around and pretend like nothing is going on. We have to stand up and make our girls aware of this nasty situation,” Nemavhola said. “To our girls, please do not trust any strangers. We know most of you are from poor backgrounds, but use the little money your parents give you for transport and other needs. Don’t be tempted and accept lifts and gifts from strangers, as that might lead to more kidnappings and disappearances,” she said. Sergeant Miemie Mukwevho, in turn, addressed the learners on some other important points, urging them not to engage in pre marital sex, crime, drugs and not to bully each other, as all these things can jeopardise their future. The police also donated body lotions, roll-ons, body sprays, nail polish and sanitary towels to needy girls. The school principal, Ms Livhu wani Mukwevho, was satisfied and praised the police for having chosen to visit her school. “In a situation like the one we find ourselves in now, who does not appreciate police presence? Things are bad out there, and we are happy to have been cho sen among the many schools. We are indeed a lucky school because, even when things were bad at other schools last week, we did not ex perience that here. We are hopeful after this visit that the kids will be much more careful when they go out, keep a positive mindset and focus on their studies to pave their way to a brighter future,” she said.

The Limpopo Department of Transport and Community Safety had to call for caution on the N1 road between Musina and the Beitbridge Border Post after local taxi associations operating between Musina and Beitbridge closed the road early on Tuesday morning, accusing the local police of not responding to robbery inci dents along the N1 on time. The protesters threatened to continue the road closure until Po lice Minister Bheki Cele addressed them personally. “Taxi drivers and passengers are being hijacked and robbed on this road on nearly a daily basis. We have reported it to the police on several occasions, but there seems to be no end to the rob beries. In most cases, when we call the police, they take hours to show up at the scene (where the robberies took place). We have had enough of it,” said James Mokhabela, a mem ber of one of the taxi associations.

In a letter sent to Coghs ta, Masindi’s lawyers state that they were initially told that the meeting was arranged to finalise the appointment of an acting king or queen. It then turned out that matters such as genealogy and customary law of succession were also placed on the agenda. These issues, Masindi’s legal team felt, are pending before court and cannot be debated in such a meeting.“Atthis stage, we are busy finalising the expert witness evidence and will shortly send our application for a prefer ential trial date to the offices of the Judge President of the Limpopo High Court,” reads the“Weletter.also wish to place it on record that we are prepared to engage the Royal Family as well as you in matters related to the appointment of an Acting King / Queen, as we are aware of the hardship caused to the per sonnel employed by the Royal Family, and who take care of the Royal Palace, and who are compensated by you and or the Department of COGHSTA,” Masindi’s lawyers state.

A happy and educative day out for learners from Mutumba Primary School turned into a tragedy when their school bus collided with another bus on the N1 outside Louis Trichardt on Friday, 19 August. The other bus was transporting learners to Mapungubwe. Three learners were certified dead at the scene and 20 were rushed to the local hospital for medical attention. The MEC for Limpopo Depart ment of Basic Education, Mavhun gu Lerule Ramakhanya, promised to work with all the stakeholders to ensure that all involved in the accident were afforded the necessary assistance, including counselling for the teachers and learners at the school. Though the cause of the acci dent had not been established at the time of our going to press, the Limpopo Department of Trans port and Community Safety said that reckless and negligent driving could not be ruled out.

On Wednesday, 17 Au gust, Nzhelele residents were shocked after a young woman was nearly kidnapped from the Mphephu Plaza in broad daylight.According to eyewitnesses, the 23-year-old woman from Mandala village was lured away by three unknown men, who are believed to have used muti on her while she was doing her shopping at the plaza. One of the suspects allegedly tapped her on the shoulder while she was waiting in the queue to pay for her groceries. The next moment, she started following him out of the shop, leaving her groceries behind.

Provincial police spokesperson Brig Motlafela Mojapelo said that a manhunt was launched to track the suspects who had hijacked Matsila. Anyone with information can call the Crime Stop number on 08600 10111 or send informa tion via the MySAPSApp. Alternatively, they can contact the nearest police station.
According to reports about the incident, the victim woke up from a trance-like state just as the suspects were about to make her get into their car. “The woman started screaming, and they got into the car and fled,” said a local photographer, who takes people’s pictures at Mphephu Plaza’s gate. “We called after a local businessman who was driving out the gate at that moment to chase the car with the suspects. The car chase went on for about three to four kilometres, until the driver of the fleeing car lost control and overturned the car. The moment their car came to a stop, community members were on them, drag ging these three guys from the car,” he said. The suspects were beaten severely and put back into the wrecked car, which was then set alight with the men still inside. Two of the men burnt to death. The third suspect, who is said to be from Botswana, managed to escape the burning car and ran to the nearest police. The suspect was arrested and appeared in the Dzanani Magistrate’s Court in Nzhelele on Thursday, 18 August, on charges of robbery and at tempted kidnapping. His case was postponed to 25 August 2022.Two counts of murder and malicious damage to property have also been opened, but no-one has been arrested in connection with these yet. Vhamusanda Vho-Thinawanga Ratshitanga expressed his disgust over Matsila’s incident, saying that he hoped the police would do their best to bring the perpetrators to book. The secretary of the Vhembe Concerned Group, Mr Phathutshedzo Ramabulana, said residents were fed-up with the escalation of car jacking and abduction of young children in their area and have threatened on several occasions to take the law into their own hands if the police did not do something about the matter soon. “Cases had reached an intolerably high number, and the police are dragging their feet to address this problem. I urge everyone to unite in the fight against crime and call on the police to deal harshly with these criminals in our area,” he said.
By Silas Nduvheni The embattled mayor of Musina, Cllr Godfrey Nkhanedzeni Mawela, is smiling again, and with reason. His assault case, involving a Muswodi-Dipeni resident, was withdrawn by the Mutale Magistrate’s Court on 25 July before the case could even be hand ed over to the Director of Public Prosecutions for a de cision, after the complainant apparently decided to drop the charge. Mawela was charged with assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm after he had allegedly assaulted and injured Carries Munzhelele (25) with his fists and a beer bottle during a drinking spree at a local tav ern in Muswodi-Dipeni village in the early hours of Saturday, 26 February this year. Both Mawela and Munzhelele are residents of Muswodi-Dipeni village, outside Musina. Mawela first appeared in the Mutale Magistrate’s Court on 28 February and his case was postponed many times for further police investigations. He was supposed to appear in court again on 29 July, but on 25 July, Munzhelele informed the state advocate that he did not want to continue with the case.Munzhelele told the media that he had made the decision to withdraw the case as he be lieved in a peaceful settlement with the mayor, and because they both reside in the same village.“Irealised that my case was being used to settle political differences in the Vhembe region, and I did not want my name involved anymore. When the Mphephu Plaza of ficially started doing business in the Nzhelele valley on 25 March last year, job opportu nities, development, simpli fied shopping and other good things were all the communi ty had in mind. Little did they know that an all-time-high crime rate, human traffick ing and access to drugs also formed part of the package of this new development.
A prominent local traditional leader, Vhamu sanda Vho-Livhuwani Matsila, became one of the latest statistics of violent crime when he was hijacked at gunpoint in Ha-Masia on Sunday, 21 August. The incident occurred at around 19:00. Matsila had just pulled up in front of the gate at his aunt’s house in Ha-Vhangani when two men appeared and held him at gunpoint, demanding the keys to his bakkie. The suspects fled with his Toyota Hilux GD6, bank cards and cellphones. Fortunately, Matsila was not hurt. On 3 August, Louis Bobodi, the spokesperson of Makhado Municipality, was also hijacked at gunpoint by two men at his home in Ha-Mashau Thenga. The police confirmed that Bobodi was one of three recent cases where Toyota dou ble-cab bakkies have been reported as stolen. None of these bakkies have been found yet.

On Wednesday, 17 August, Musina Mayor Nkhanedzeni Godfrey Mawela met with JCI Mining (Vele Colliery), following an outcry by the community regarding the mining company’s recruit ment process. Vele Colliery is a semisoft coking and thermal coal colliery in the Tuli Coalfield, located 48 km west of Musina. Considering that the mine is within the Musina area, the community feels they should benefit from the mine’s projects. Messages circulating on social media alleged that the management of the mine recruited most of its employ ees from outside, and this did not sit well with the Musina community.According to Mawela, the meeting was a success. He said they had agreed to extend the recruitment process to enable residents from Musina to apply for the respective positions. Residents in all 12 wards were encouraged to submit their CVs (with proof of resi dence) at their municipal office, tribal councils or ward coun cillors. The closing date for CV submissions was Tuesday, 23 August 2022, at 13:00. But after the mayor had published the outcome of his meeting with the mine’s management, the community members were still not satis fied, feeling that more should have been discussed. “We know the municipality already has a database of unemployed people. What is going to happen to people who are already in this database?” asked one resident, pointing out that the mine did not only offer discussed.”likeopportunities.opportunities,employmentbutalsobusiness“Wewouldtoknowwhythiswasnot

The first time Jerry took part was in the “Princess Pageant” in Port Elizabeth in 2019. She was then a first-year student at the Nelson Mande la University. She ended in the top five. Many other pageants followed, e.g. Miss Teen (in the top ten), Queen of the World, South Africa (second princess), Miss Polokwane and Mini Miss RSA. “I have a unique insight into mental health of teenagers as I was diagnosed with depression and anxiety, as well as borderline personality disorder and an acute eating disorder when I turned 17. I was at a mental health facility two times and have a personal record of seven suicide at tempts. I believe in the power of words. If we speak up about things that would normally be considered taboo, that’s when we start to dismantle the walls that hold us back. I am not ashamed of my experiences because I believe there is a little girl or little boy out there who needs to know that they are not crazy and they are beautiful with all their flaws. If I can touch just one person, I’ve done my job. That is why I do pageants,” Jerry shares. It struck her one day that, if somebody had been there for her at the time of her first suicide attempt at the age of 11, things could have been different. She recalls that she needed to hear that someone was there to hold her hand, or saying that things were going to be okay. “I have a duty to do this, to reach out. I love giving advice. I’m there for them to lend a hand, to hug, to smile. At high school, people always came to me if they wanted to giveJerryup.”continues to tell that she did not originally plan to study psychology. She wanted to study biomedical science, but the course was full. Her faculty administrator recommended that she do a BA and switch to biomedical science in her second year. She discovered psychology and never looked back. Being a final year student, she studies online, works full-time and is involved in many ventures. Charity is close to Jerry’s heart. “I keep a package in my car with dog food and a dog blanket. Whenever I see a stray animal, I feed it, or pick it up and take it to the SPCA - whose telephone number I know off by heart!” says Jerry. An excited Jerry continues that, if she wins the title of Miss Makhado Royal 2022, she will open a modelling school that offers underpriv ileged models in Louis Trich ardt (especially in the villages) free classes. The R10 000 business-venture prize if she wins would be very helpful in finding a place where people do not need to pay an arm and a leg to reach their full potential.

By Silas Nduvheni Life has indeed changed for the better for pupils from rural Fondwe Primary School, within Nzhelele’s East Circuit in the Vhembe District, after a visit from the Department of Transport on Monday, 15 August. In total, 194 learners who walk long distances to and from school every day received brand-new, high-quality bicycles to make traveling to and from school easier for them. This donation formed part of a national initiative by the Department of Transport that was launched in 2007, called the Shova Kalula Project, which aims to maximise the use of non-motorised transport and eradicate the late arrival of learners who have to travel far to get to school.
“Co-operation needed to end GBV”
By Kaizer Nengovhela The Limpopo MEC for So cial Development, Dickson Masemola, joined different religious organisations and local communities in their fight to end to gender-based violence. He was the guest speaker at an event at the Vhulaudzi Radzilani Hall on Friday, 12 August, which was attended by traditional leaders, local residents, school learners and various community structures. Masemola said they were worried about the fact that so many gender-based violence cases were not reported because the perpetrators were the breadwinners in the fami ly. “The issue of gender-based violence culminates in a lot of things. Sometimes it starts with substance abuse, or even bullying, which is becoming rife at schools these days. So, we need to work together. The Department of Social Develop ment is always available to work with everyone. People should not wait so long to report abuse,” said Masemola.
The school principal, Ms Happy Muk wevho, was deeply touched by this gesture as many of the children used to walk between two and five kilometres to school. Now, she said, they would not be late for morning studies anymore, since they had their own, fast transpor tation to get to school. “We are humbled to be given these bicycles for the learners. The challenge of not being able to afford fares for buses and taxis to transport them often leads to learners’ being late for school, and once they get here, they are tired. Thenga said that the NPA was accountable to the public and had adopted gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF), serious and violent crimes, and murder as pri ority-focus areas. “We endeavour to prosecute all matters without fear, favour or prejudice as this will aid us to build a trusted and effective NPA that ensures justice for all,” she said.

By Silas Nduvheni The director of the Limpopo divi sion of the National Prosecution Authority (NPA), Advocate Ivy Thenga, said she trusted that they would prosecute and take the necessary measures to punish the killers of former Collins Chabane Mayor Moses Maluleke (56). Maluleke was gunned down out side his house in Xikundu village on 21 July this year. His 18-year-old son was also injured during the incident. Four people have been arrested in connection with the murder and police said more arrests were to be made as investigations continued. The accused are all still in Thengacustody.was speaking on Wednes day, 17 August, during a media briefing held in the boardroom at her department in Polokwane to highlight awareness of the NPA’s programmes and performance of the criminal justice system, and share their efforts of rebuilding the rule of law. She said that, by briefing the media, the public too was informed, with a better understanding of how the criminal justice system worked, thus providing the public with a stronger confidence in the criminal justice system overall. Thenga said that, to show that they were serious about the justice system’s taking action against the accused in this murder case, they had dispatched two advocates from their office to go and find out what was happening in court. “If the accused were to be granted bail, we will oppose it with strong facts. We are also working around the clock to make sure the case against the accused, who robbed police mem bers on duty of their firearms at the Malamulele Police Station on the evening of 21 November 2021, gets centralized, so they are all tried in one magistrate’s court,” she said. According to Thenga, robbing the police members of their firearms showed that some people out there did not respect the law. “If law enforcement officers get robbed at police stations, where do we as the public seek protection?”
On the issue of bullying, he said that this was becoming more prevalent at schools across the province. “The department is faced with cases of bullying almost every month. In several instances … we have acted swiftly to assist the families of victims to open cases, but the unfortunate part is that, when we expel a learner from one school, the law compels us to find another school for him/her to ensure that the right to education is prioritised.”Mphephu SAPS station commander Col Noria Ma davhu, who represented the Vhembe Cluster, urged the public to report crime and assist the police with informa tion. She said families should also stop preventing victims of GBV from reporting sexual crimes committed by relatives. Madavhu called on women to report all forms of women and child abuse. “We as police officers have found that most of the victims of gender-based violence either kept silent or reported the matter very late. We want to send a message out to young women that they must not be afraid to report violence or abuse in any form, regardless of whether the perpetrators are breadwinners of the family or not. We know that many women are afraid that if they expose the people who abuse them, they will struggle without food on the table. There is always help for these victims,” said Madavhu.

The EWT gave feedback on the incident the past week in a media statement. The organisation states that this mass poisoning is a devastating blow to the country’s vulture popula tions. “Two of the surviving African white-backed vultures had recovered well enough for release on 18 August 2022, after being fitted with GPS tracking units, so that we can monitor their progress,” says the EWT. According to the EWT, the demand for animal body parts to feed the illegal wildlife trade has led to thousands of vultures’ being poisoned across Africa, which has devastated populations and is driving them rapidly towards extinction. “Scavenging mammals, including lions, hyenas, and leopards, are also severely affected by poisoning.
The scene has been cordoned off for further investigation and the carcasses have been burned to ensure that no further poisonings occur. Initial indi cations are that some of the carcasses were harvested for their body parts. SANParks also confirmed that the matter has been referred to the SAPS for investigation.

soning of animals or people. The EWT also works closely with the Moholoho lo Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre to fa cilitate the rapid rescue and treatment of vultures that survive these incidents. The rangers and EWT staff swiftly administer first aid to vultures on site, then safely transport survivors to the rehabilitation centre. Here they receive around-the-clock intensive care to en sure that they are stabilised, the toxins are eliminated, and the birds are fit and healthy before release. Over 20202022 alone, the EWT and Moholoholo Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre rescued 75 threatened vultures that survived poisoning incidents in the Kruger, of which 67 have been successfully re habilitated and released back into the wild to have a second chance to thrive andInbreed.conclusion, Mr Ike Phaahla, KNP spokesperson, says that the park appreciates the speed with which their rangers and the EWT responded to the scene and managed to save some of the animals.“Weare also following up on the investigations with the SAPS because we would like to see the perpetra tors facing the full might of the law,” Phaahla says.

Conservation News of another mass poisoning of vultures along the Kruger Nation al Park fence near Punda Maria has conservationists fuming. The horrific discovery was made by park rangers patrolling the fence on 11 August. A buffalo carcass, killed by snar ing and then laced with highly toxic poison, was used to kill the animals. A total of 108 vultures died after feeding on the carcass. The species killed included 104 critically endangered white-backed vultures, one critically endangered white-headed vulture, two vulnerable Cape vultures and one endangered lappet-faced vulture. With the assistance of the Endan gered Wildlife Trust (EWT), 24 vul tures were found still alive and rushed to the Shingwedzi and Moholoholo Rehabilitation Centre for treatment. Following the incident, Yolan Fried man, CEO of the EWT, expressed her concern that “given the critical status of vultures globally, poisonings at this scale place the species at increasing risk of extinction”. Acting CEO of SANParks Hapiloe Sello also stated that “this reprehensible act once again highlights the ever-present danger of poisoning by unscrupulous people. We cannot afford to let our guard down, and we call on law-enforcement agen cies outside the park to move swiftly to arrest the perpetrators”.
Mass poisoning a devastating blow to SA’s vulture population
Over the last 10 years, there has been a steady increase in wildlife poisoning across the Lowveld and the Great Lim popo Transfrontier Conservation Area (GLTCA),” says the EWT. “The Greater Kruger, including the associated private nature reserves and the Great Limpopo Transfrontier land scape, is an important, vulture-rich landscape and currently a hotspot for wildlife poisoning, with at least six new incidents recorded in the southern half of the Greater Kruger since February 2020. In all of these cases, vultures were the most heavily affected by poisoning, with approximately 600 vultures from five threatened species killed in the Greater Kruger since January 2019, predominantly in the northern section of the Kruger Nation al Park,” says the EWT. The current scale and rate of vulture losses to poisoning are frightening and the EWT warned that it could lead to the local extinction of vultures in this region within the next four years. “It is important to note that many incidents are not detected or reported as they occur in vast wilderness landscapes. Because of this, we suspect our records are under-reporting the severity of the threat,” the EWT says. According to the EWT, the current population estimates for white-backed vultures in southern Africa are around 7 350 mature individuals, and based on the last aerial surveys done in 2014, there are around 900 breeding pairs (and approximately 2 400 birds) in the Kruger National Park. “This event has thus led to the loss of approximately 5% of the region’s vultures. The pop ulations affected in the latest incident will take some time to recover, particularly as it is the peak of vulture breeding season, and it is estimated that for every breeding adult lost, one chick is lost too,” says the EWT.The EWT has been working with SANParks to improve the man agement and response to these todecontaminatebirdstoalsopurposes.cassesscenebythesedetect,400hasingEWT’sParkthepoisoningdevastatingeventsacrossKrugerNationalsince2019.TheWildlifePoisonResponsetrainingtrainedmorethanrangerstoidentify,anddealwitheventseffectivelycontainingthecrimeandsamplingcarforinvestigativeRangersaretrainedinmethodssaveasmanysurvivingaspossibleandthescenepreventfurtherpoi

By Victor Mukwevho Reggae music lovers who have been suffering from reggae depravation of late will get a reggae-music injection when the godfather of reggae music in the country, Colbert Mukwevho, releases his much-anticipated album. Mukwevho, the only reggae artist in the world who is regarded as the heir to Bob Marley's throne, missed a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to perform at the Reggae Sunsplash Festival in Jamaica in the late 1980s, when the former Venda Bantustan refused him a passport to go to Jamaica.Reports around the musical world indicated that after listening to songs from his international debut album, Lord is my rock, Bob Marley's wife Rita and her crew sent messages to South African music producers to locate him and asked him to attend the Reggae Sunsplash Festival in Jamaica, at their cost. When asked about his feelings regarding the incident, Mukwevho said the matter had been heart-breaking but was now water under the bridge. Mukwevho, who hails from Tshitomboni tsha ha Mmbubana, started singing in a family band in the 1970s. He started as a vocalist for the band called The Thrilling Artists. He then started his own band, called The Comforters, and released many albums.Hemade his breakthrough in the music industry with his blockbuster album called Month End Lover. One of the songs on the album, Immortal Words, had reggae lovers in the country going bananas.In1992, he released an album called I do nela rothe. One of the songs on that album, Kha tambe na thanga dzawe, almost became a national anthem. The song, literally translated as “Play with your age mates”, warns young girls to refrain from frolicking with sugarSpeakingdaddies.to Limpopo Mirror on Tuesday (23rd), Mukwevho said his main aim was to contribute to getting Africa to unite. “Africa will know no peace until Africa unites. We are one as a people. One goal, one God, one destiny,” he said. When asked about his much-awaited album, to be released in October, he said he did not want to talk much about the forthcoming album but promised his fans that the offering would be one of his best so far. “Me say, the message is the same, Africa Unite, ahooi rastafari,” he concluded. In terms of artistic talents, Ofhani Matsa has obviously been blessed with a lot of it. One only has to look at his beautiful paintings and drawings to know that he is surely one of Ha-Thukhutha village in Thohoyandou’s most gifted hidden gems. This young man will undoubtedly go far with his art. Ofhani (23) was born and raised in Ha-Thukhutha. When he was 12 years old, he saw a drawing done by one of his classmates and it left such an impression on him that he became determined to learn this skill. “It all began for me when I was in the sixth grade in 2011, at Muratho Primary School and I saw Thendo Thukhuta’s artwork. That was the inspiration that spurred me on to start drawing,” he said. Ofhani honed his skills on his own at first, but was left feeling stuck because he had no one to provide direction. For eight years his art basically came to a standstill. Two years ago, he met local artist Bono Siaga from Luheni, who taught him how to customise shoes and clothes. “At that point I did my final drawing as I felt I was going nowhere because of the limited knowledge I had of finer art. So, Bono Siaga taught me a new trade,” heEarliersaid. last year, he enrolled at the Ndalama Art Academy - an art centre under the veteran multi-talented artist and art facilitator Avhashoni Mainganye from Phiphidi village. “I finally started to learn the different forms of art; drawing, painting, sculpting, abstract art and all the rest.” He agrees that art definitely has a kind of therapeutic effect on an artist. “It’s a therapy for some, a form of expression for others, and a source of calm and joy for the rest. I prefer to craft abstract art because it releases bottled-up emotions and stress, leaving me with an innerOfhanipeace.”said he wanted to have his own art gallery someday where he could market and sell both his own work and those of other artists. For those interested in his work, Ofhani can be reached on 076 160 5130 (phone calls or WhatsApp). Ofhani Matsa is a very skilled sketch artist too.

He said he was influenced by famous musicians such as Mizo Phyll and Bellafonte. “I fell in love with music at a young age. Music was always in my bones,” he said. “Before recording the album, I performed at different places, including community events, to make sure that people were getting used to my music. The bookings were overflowing and it proved that people love my music. My music is purely vocal, but we also add musical instruments in a few songs,” he said. He added that he was quite delighted about the fact that his songs were regularly getting airplay on SABC radio and community radio stations. His debut album has soothing vocal tracks, which Mugwena believes will please the fans. By Elmon Tshikhudo For Thivhulawi Ndou, better known as T-Man Gavini, the road to reclaim his rightful place in the music industry, after spending years out on the streets because of drug addiction, has not been easy. The King of Kwaito, however, seems to be doing very well since he announced his rehabilitation and comeback to the music industry with the release of his album Mazwale made a vow to his fans toclosethoseand him never to return to his days of drug abuse and he is keeping his word. Not long after he rose to stardom in 2006 with hits such as Tshifhinga Tsha u Tshina and Nwana u thoma ngo Kokovha, T-Man Gavini took a pitiless plunge from grace when he got mixed up with the wrong company and drugs started to take control of his life. He forgot about music altogether and started frequenting taverns and other dodgy hangout places - not to perform but to beg for beer and drugs. His music career deteriorated, and for years he lived the life of a hobo. In 2020, Advocate Mpho Nefuri saw a photo of him in tattered clothes Facebook, spurring her on to consider an intervention. People were mocking him in the comments, and for some reason, this touched her. So, she went out to find him and had him admitted to a rehabilitation centre in Pretoria that she paid for herself. After rehab, Nefuri took him into her own home and, when she saw that her charge was better, took things further. She hooked him up with Prime Entertainments and Mazwale was recorded. From there on, things began to really look up for the artist. “I am forever indebted to Advocate Nefuri. I was lost, drowning in a pool of drugs and heading straight for the grave, but God sent her to rescue me. I had lost all hope in life, but through God’s grace and the efforts of others, I am back on my feet and reclaiming my rightful place as captain of my ship,” Gavini said. Since the release of Mazwale, a few other singles and gigs have followed, but these days Gavini enjoys spending his time helping up-and-coming artists. This, he says, is his way of ploughing back into the communities that supported and helped him in getting through his darkest days.“Iwould like to impart my skills to others who are still struggling to climb the music ladder. I will not be doing justice, though, if I do not sit down with my brothers in this industry and warn them about the dangers of drug and alcohol abuse. I was there, and I feel it is my duty to share my experiences with them. I am indebted to the community, and those who need my help must feel free to contact me. I am ready to groom new stars and give them a break in making it in the industry,” he said.

As an introduction, Mr Kevin Hinde, on behalf of A3 Archi tects, gave a brief overview of the project so far. “We are very blessed and honoured to have been involved in the project since 2018, and I know we had a brief two-and-a-half year interruption of all of our lives, so that obviously contributed substantially to the delay,” said Hinde. He was, however, excited about the progress made to date. “But the project we are sitting with right now is a project that has evolved. I think we went through 14 or 15 different revisions in the con cept design in order to get the modelling right,” said Hinde. He explained that they ended up deciding just to build a new hospital, rather than trying to tie it into the existing hospital. The plan is then to repurpose the existing building as support infrastructure.Thenewhospital is essen tially a four-storey building (ground level plus three floors). The ground floor will feature a very comprehensive radiology unit, a reception area at the front door, a coffee shop, some administrative offices, a phar macy and all the public ser vices. At the back, it will tie into the existing hospital, through an access passage, which is going to become support and consulting facilities.
By Andries van Zyl Investors and local politicians were given a closer look at what exactly is being planned for the new 92-bed Zout pansberg Private Hospital (ZPH) in Louis Trichardt during a hospital-expansion visit to the site on Tuesday, 16 August. The guests included members of the hospital’s board of directors, the investment partners Summit Africa, shareholders, the mayor of the Vhembe District Municipality, Cllr Dowelani Nenguda, and the mayor of the Makhado Municipality, Cllr Samuel Munyai. The new ZPH is being built to serve not only the Makhado area, but the greater Vhem be District with the aim of delivering world-class health care, without patients’ having to travel vast distances to get these elsewhere.
“Ngange mentioned we are investing R200 million on behalf of the investors. But the investment does not stop there. The goal in this particular facil ity is to create at least 80 jobs - new jobs. The new jobs are in the clinical side of the facility, as well on the administrative side. But the facility cannot stand on its own. It needs cleaning, it needs catering, it needs laundry, security – it needs all kinds of services that are spinoffs of the investments that we have made. What we measured is that for every R1 million of investment that we make in a community like this one, you create at least another R1 million of expenditure for local SMEs. So, what we believe is that by investing R200 mil lion into this project, we create another R200 million. And that is annual expenditure, not just a once-off,” said Amosun. On behalf of the people of the Vhembe district, Cllr Dowelani Nenguda thanked all those involved in the project.

On the first floor will be a 27-bed medical ward and an eight-bed paediatric ward. “So, your medical/paediatric com ponent will be on the first floor … What is essentially on the first floor ties into the service level because of the fall in the [slope of the] site and a com prehensive new arrangement of services in the new facility, including a kitchen, laundry, new engineering and backup water. The building is going to be completely self-supporting and a stand-alone structure,” HindeComingsaid.up to the second floor, this floor will consist of a 19-bed surgical ward, all rooms with en-suite bath room arrangements, typical of private-hospital planning, as well as the necessary support infrastructure and facilities. “What we’ve also done is we’ve separated the clinical services and supply services from the movement of patients and public. You don’t want to mix those two. So, as far as possible, in a very tight footprint, we have managed to contain the services course as separate from the public circulation course to give you a sense of well-being as an end-user. It also then allows the staff to move freely and uninterrupted without mixing with the public and patients,” said Hinde. Also on the second floor is a dedicated maternity ward and neonatal and delivery rooms. On the top (third) floor will be the operating theatres because of all the equipment and air-conditioning on the roof, from a technical perspec tive, to service the theatres underneath. It will have three theatres, with the potential for future expansion, and a post-op unit, 10-bed ICU/HCU ward, central sterile services depart ment and theatre staff resting and changing area. “This will be the super-specialised floor,” saidHindeHinde.concluded his presen tation by stating that the build ing has been planned to allow for future expansion along all itsZPHedges.manager Ms Anneke Stroebel expressed her grati tude towards Summit Africa as investors and said she was excited to see the new hospital taking shape. “We salute Sum mit Africa for investing in our vision. This community will be forever grateful,” said Stroebel. In his opening remarks, Mr Ngange Nongogo (Zoutpans berg Management Committee board chairman and Summit Investment principal and part ner) said that at the time they (Summit Africa) were contem plating getting involved with the expansion of the hospital, the R200 million investment into the Makhado district was the second-largest private investment into the area in the last 20 years. “What I want to say is a big thank you to my fellow executives on the board. A significant thank you to the management team that has supported us through this en deavour and while we are going through this process in keeping the lights on and making sure the people who come through the hospital are more than well serviced. A big vote of thanks as well to the Summit team … as our primary investors into this expansion that you see in front of you and the great set of doc tors. There are over 20 doctors who have committed to come on board and support us in this growth initiative. All have really taken ZPH from being primar ily a maternity-based hospital to a 92-bed acute hospital with three theatres servicing the greater community, not only in the Makhado area but the greater Vhembe District. I hope that when we speak in five years’ time, we will talk about the numbers of lives we’ve saved by making sure people don’t have to travel these road to get to quality health care and that they are actually treated at our fine facility,” said Nongogo.
Also present at the function was Mr Tomi Amosun (Summit co-founder and managing partner). He thanked the ZPH management for backing Sum mit Africa as their investment partner. “Summit is all about partnerships … We can have an idea, but without a partnership, that idea would have stayed an idea on paper,” he said. According to Amosun, the project is more than just num bers. “Numbers are important because, at the end of the day, we are investing to make a re turn. We are investing pension ers’ money to make a return for those pensioners. But equally, we are investing to make in impact in the community, and that impact needs to be felt even after the investment has been made,” said Amosun. So what does that mean?
“To the management of ZPH, the leadership of Summit Africa and other partners, I want to say we really appreciate this initiative. This is not only going to help in taking care of our health, but also in terms of poverty alleviation,” said Nenguda.Thecompletion date for the new hospital is set for October 2023.
New hospital will be more than just a numbers game

The death of Fhatuwani Max well “Big Bags” Mabege from Mulodi village, near Tshil amba, came as a terrible blow to everyone who knew him. The 60-year-old businessman suddenly collapsed and died on Sunday, 14 August. Mabege must have had some kind of a premonition that he was about to pass on. Only a day before his death, he appar ently told his son with happy satisfaction that he had fulfilled everything he had wanted to do in his Mabegelifetime.was well-known in these parts. He built his business empire all the way up from scratch, starting by selling ice blocks. At the time of his death, he owned a fleet of taxis and a supermarket, delivering groceries to his customers around Vhembe free of charge. Although his business was prospering, Mabege did not quit his job as security officer at the University of Venda (Univ en), and he will be remembered most for this humbleness. Better known as ‘English man’ because of his excellent English skills, Mabege was the darling among Univen students as he was friendly and helpful to everyone. He even translated his surname to Big Bags, which ultimately became the brand name on all his taxis. To honour his legacy, the words “Big Bags” were also engraved on his tombstone.Amemorial service was held in his honour at the Univen Senate Chambers on Thursday, 18 August. Colbert Netsh ishivhe, who represented the family, said they were heartbro ken. He said that Mabege had helped so many families around the Vhembe District. “He started his businesses not to make money, but to help community members escape from poverty. He understood that the majority of people did not have cash and often gave them food and other ba sic needs on credit. It is not only the family who has lost someone dear and valuable; the entire community is in deep mourning,” he said. Speakers at the funeral included Univen’s director of protection services, Mr Ratshilumela Mulaudzi, and the general secretary of the Mutale Taxi Association, Mr Tshimangadzo Mphigalale.

“Some of the opportunities that must be embraced with the establishment of the 4IR require our education and training systems to become much more agile and to engage people much more actively in lifelong learning as societies and transformed economies. New skills will be required to create, maintain and leverage these new technologies,” said Dr“ItSishi.isvital that the education and training on 4IR is visible, and more importantly, available at the level of higher educa tion to ensure that learners adapt and learn to become and remain relevant to this fast-changing world through the understanding of 4IR,” he said.

“Big Bags Englishman” is no more
Obituary Ms Tsakani Ketziah Mokoki, who had taught at Makonde Primary School for many years, passed away peaceful ly at the ripe age of 81 at her home in Thohoyandou on Tuesday, 16 August. News of her death has left a great sadness among those who knew her, including two of her former pupils, Prof Khathutshelo Nephawe and Dr Tshilidzi Madzivhandila. Prof Nephawe said he vivid ly remembered the contribu tion Mokoki had made to his academic career. “It was tough in those days because there were no crèches to prepare us for school. We arrived at school blank, and Ms Mokoki had to teach us the basics from scratch, like how to hold a pencil. I now realize that teaching at the foundation phase is the most difficult. However, Ms Mokoki did her job with passion because teaching was her calling,” he said. What stood out for Dr Madzivhandila the most about Ms Mokoki was that she loved cleanliness and applied strict discipline. He said he would never forget it as long as he lived.Mokoki’s daughter, Helen, said that although the fam ily members were in deep mourning, they were consoled by the fact that her mother had touched so many lives during her lifetime. “She was not only our mother but a mother to hundreds of people as she left a mark in the education fraternity. We thank everyone for their messages of support and family visits during this difficult time,” she said.Tsakani Ketziah Mokoki was born at Makonde village on 4 September 1940. She received her primary education at Makonde and Georgenholtz, after which she proceeded to the Vendaland Institute for her education, secondarywhere she obtained her primary education certificate in 1960. She started work ing as an educator at Lukau Primary School in 1961. Over the course of her teaching career, she taught at various schools, but it was at Makonde Primary School that she spent most of her time before she retired in 2000. Lastly, let me put it clear that a country with out borders is tantamount to a house without a wall or a security fence, where all animals, both wild and domestic, walk in and out at will, kill ing and eating whatever is at their proposal. I know we can talk about this until the cows come home, but illegal immigrants are not welcome all over the world, but when South Africans complain about them, we are labelled as xenophobic, hypocrites and given many other derogatory names. Is this fair?

By Victor Mukwevho In life, the real value of some thing can be judged only by prac tical experience or results and not from appearance or theory, hence the English phrase: “The proof of the pudding is in the eating”. This thought came to mind while pondering the issue of illegal immigrants, whom the authorities and intellectuals sitting in top-shelf offices always refer to with euphe misms such as “economic migrants” or “undocumented immigrants”. They know nothing about what is happening in the townships and rural areas between people with no valid resident documents and those who were born and bred in the beloved land; simply put, the “local residents”.Mostof us seem to be missing the point regarding this matter. The issue is not about illegal immi grants taking jobs away from local residents as the authorities and those who live in suburbs claim. No, the matter is much more complex than simple jealousy. The main bone of contention is the fact that they are not docu mented, and some commit heinous crimes such as murder and rape and disappear into thin air. The police cannot get their fingerprints. The criminals among them rape women and girls, and sometimes even sodomise husbands in front of family members. But because they are not documented, they just move from one township to another, from one village to another or back to their respective countries after committing such crimes, leaving our mothers, daughters and fathers traumatised for life. I was working for The Tembisan Newspaper when the so-called xenophobic violence erupted in 2008. For about six months prior to the eruption, we were reporting regularly about crimes such as housebreaking, armed robbery and murder. Most of the culprits could not be tracked by the police as they were not documented, leaving no fingerprints on the scene. But one day, a man who was going on honeymoon after a glittering wedding was hijacked, his wife was raped and they were both killed. The culprits were later discovered to be illegal immigrants, and within hours, the township was on fire. Shacks were burnt, property destroyed and some lost their lives. Were residents fighting for job op portunities? No, they were fighting for people to come to this country with valid identity papers. Symp toms and definite signs of what had happened in 2008 in Tembisa are very clear, and if the situation is not resolved soon, I fear for the worst here in our district. Another argument from those who try to defend them from offices and mansions is that Africa has sons and daughters who are plying their trade in Europe, and if people say illegal immigrants must leave our shores, what would happen to them? The question then would be: Did they jump borders to reach Vic’s Views Europe? No. They used the right channels and have the necessary paperwork. Those European countries know that they are there. In this country, we have many people who had entered the country in a legal way and who contribute to the economy. The fact that the country has inadequate systems in place to renew visas and work permits obviously does not help, but these things need to be sorted out. The legal immigrants are not the problem. A timebomb is waiting to ex plode in our country because of un documented illegal immigrants. In the streets of Thohoyandou, more than half of hawkers are illegal immigrants. A week or so ago, the municipality had a full day fighting with local hawkers who are selling their wares in the streets, while illegal immigrants were moving around freely, selling things such as cellphone chargers, groundnuts and polish. The police know these illegal immi grants are there, the municipality knows they are there, the government knows they are there, but they are doing nothing. After the gang-rape incident in Krugersdorp last month, the police pounced on illegal zama zamas in the area. Are they waiting for the same to happen before they remove them from the once beautiful Thohoyandou CBD?

Vhahangwele Nembaleni, a female soc cer referee from Itsani, is fast growing into a prominent figure as she continues to endear herself to local soccer lovers. The love of football of the 32-year-old mother of two (a son and a girl) began when she started playing for the local ladies’ soccer team, Shayandima Morn ing Stars, under the Safa Sasol Women League in Nembaleni2009.says her dream came true when she was recruited by PSL referee Khamusi Razwimisani and former referee and match commissioner Rudzani Mu laudzi after she quit the team in 2013. “I took the bull by the horns and told myself that it was the correct time to realise my potential.”Theyoung woman was sent to the inter-regional ladies’ soccer tournament in 2014, where she made a deep impres sion on the match commissioners. Upon her arrival back home, she was taken for fitness tests in Polokwane, and passed. Apart from her being on the panel for the SAB League as a referee, Nembaleni is also a panel member of the Safa ABC Motsepe Promotional League (female category). She has been promoted to PSL, CAF, assistant referee. In 2018, she went to Cameroon, where she assisted in the CAF U/20 women’s match between Cameroon and Algeria, and in 2019 she went to assist in the U/17 women’s match in Uganda (Uganda vs Nigeria). When she came back from Uganda, she got injured during the PSL fitness physical and decided to take a Nembalenibreak. recalls the first ABC Motsepe league match where she officiated between the Dolphins and the Winners. “Fortunately, the game went very smoothly and ended 2-0 in favour of the Dolphins. After the match, many people questioned why I was there as referee. Others stood up for me and said, ‘Look at her decisions. She knows what she’s doing.’” She says that she is happy that men do not look down on her when she is in control of the games. “I make sure that I adhere to all the rules and this makes me respectable on the soccer pitch. The fact that I’m a woman has nothing to do with my authority on the pitch, and I’m proud that I have never been assaulted throughout my career.”

During that time, the slip pery midfielder also worked for the Venda Development Cooperation (VDC). He had to commute from Thohoyandou to Mahwelereng every week end, and that was very difficult for him. He decided to move on to a team that was based closer and joined Tshiulungoma Pepsi The Angel in 1991. “I was head-hunted by Pepsi The Angel’s coach, Kennedy Ndlazi. I played with young sters like Links Ragimana, the late Baldwin Mahlale and Khangela.” Mahandana also played for United Scientists and Dynamos in the PSL. Most local fans remember him from playing for the then Venda National team. The stadium would reverberate with the name “Chriiiiis!” whenever he was in possession of the ball. But he was not the only shining star in terms of football in his village of Ngovhela. Mahandana said the village had produced many talented players way before him. He remembers the era of Scara Ra magoma, who was a ferocious striker. “After Scara Ramagoma came Ace Musie. Those two were much better players than me,” he Whensaid.asked how he got to play until his late 30s, he re plied: “The secret is to take care of one’s body. You have to keep training and avoid wild nights and parties. It’s a commitment you choose to make.”

Both sides played attacking football in the first half, making the match entertaining to watch. Mubva had their first regret in the fifth minute. Hope Ngwana missed a golden chance when he shotMeshackwide. Tshifhumulo of Stars scored the only goal of his team in the 24th minute. He un leashed a powerful header from outside the box and the keeper of Mubva watched in disbelief as the ball hit the back of the net. The second half saw Mubva pressing hard in search of more goals. Realizing that they had to defend their lead, Stars abandoned their posi tions and packed themselves at the far back. Mubva scored the equaliser via Surprice Sadi ki. By Kaizer Nengovhela Hollywood Mabaleng FC used their home-ground advantage to beat Tshikota Chelsea 0-1 in their Makhado Local Football League match played at the Tshiozwi Grounds on Saturday. The game was one of two halves as Mabaleng dictated terms for the better part of the first half, while the visitors from Tshikota made a comeback in the last stanza. The first half was characterised by wasted scoring opportunities. Although Mabaleng were all over the visitors, Chelsea managed to keep a clean sheet until the end of the first Mabalenghalf. threatened to score for the first time in the 18th minute. Their centre forward, Rilinde Ma nenzhe, received a neat pass from Alugumi Mamugudubi inside the box. Manenzhe did the unexpected when he unleashed aimlessly. Bon gani Khosa of Chelsea’s close-range half volley missed the target by inches a few minutes later. Mabaleng scored the important goal when their overlapping mid fielder, Solomon Rasiluma, caught Chelsea’s keeper, Thulare Mhlanga, napping with a long-range ground cutter. The referee flashed the only yellow card in the 70th minute. Lavhelesani Nemulenga of Chelsea used abusive language towards the referee, and he was lucky not to see red. Gumani Mainganye of Chelsea attack swith the ball. Alugumi Mamu gudubi chases. Mabaleng FC beat Chelsea
Ravele Black Dragons and Gogobole Bucs played to 1-all draw in their Makhado Local Football league match played at the Ravele Grounds. Dragons’ keeper quickly realised that he would have to work hard to keep his net clean. He had to stretch to the limit to execute a brilliant save when Pfano Malivhusha unleashed a powerful half volley from the edge of the penalty box. Realising that the opposition were all over them, Dragons abandoned their positions to solidify their defence for a moment and left Muloko Ndove as the lone striker. The strategy worked for them as the Bucs’ technical staff seemed to run out of ideas for the better part of the first Wangahalf.Mushia of Bucs came close to scoring three minutes before the half-time whistle. He forced his way through the defence of Dragons but lost possession on the brink of unleashing from inside the box. Bucs were the first to blow the trumpet. Their lethal striker, Lethabo Masengane, headed home in the 59th minute after a scramble in the box. Dragons took 74 minutes to retaliate. Their overlapping midfielder, Tshilidzi Rambau, was brought down within the box and the referee awarded a free kick. Molatelo Muopa made no mistake from the spot. Dragons were all over Bucs in the dying min utes of the game, but they could not find their way through the defence of Bucs.

Morning Stars have reason to panicBy Frank Mavhungu After dropping league points in their last two matches, Maindis Ladies must collect the maximum points in their next fixture to keep their title hope alive. They will travel to Emalahleni on Sunday, where they will do battle with Coal City Wizards at the Puma Rugby Stadium. While a win for Maindis will be good enough to revive their title hopes, the situation is totally different for Coal City Wizards. Maindis are currently lying in the seventh position on the log standings with 30 points, eight behind the log leaders, JVW FC. As for Coal City Wizards, the game will be a matter of life and death. City Wizards are one of the five teams fighting for survival. Should they manage to beat Maindis on Sunday, City Wiz ards are likely to move three steps up on the log standings. The other Limpopo-based side, First Touch FC, will entertain Golden Ladies at the Seshego Stadium on Saturday. First Touch are not safe in terms of Durbanrelegation.Ladieswill host JVW FC at the Chatsworth Stadium in Durban. Although this will be a home fixture for them, col lecting the maximum points at the expense of JVW FC will not be an easy task for the Durban Ladies. JVW FC are currently leading the pack with 38 points. The mood is good in their camp after beating Golden Ladies 8-0 lastTheSaturday.otherweekend fixtures are Bloemfontein Celtic vs TUT Football Club, UWC vs Thun derbirds Ladies, City Lads vs Mamelodi Sundowns, Vasco da Gama vs Richmond United and University of Johannesburg FC vs Tsunami Queens FC. Maindis must beat the City Wizards
By Frank Mavhungu Although Maindis Ladies dropped four significant league points in their last two Hollywoodbets Super League matches, the team’s head coach, Mr Sipho Mabuza, is still adamant that he will achieve his set target at the end of the season. Maindis lost 1-3 to JVW FC at the Tsakane Stadium in Jo hannesburg last Wednesday, 17 August. They continued to drop vital points when they played to a goalless draw with First Touch FC in their Limpopo derby at the Giyani Stadium lastDuringSaturday.aninterview with him after Saturday’s game, Mr Mabuza said that the manage ment of the team had given him a clear mandate when he had taken over the coaching job from Ms Rhulani Matheb ula at the beginning of the current season. His mandate is to ensure that the team will end among the top four on the log standings at the end of the season.Maindis Ladies are currently lying in the seventh spot on the log standings with 30 points, eight behind the pace setters, JVW FC. “With 13 matches remaining before the end of the season, anything is still possi ble,” Mabuza said. Saturday’s clash between Maindis and First Touch was a see-saw battle. The home side were unstoppable in the first 20 minutes of the game. They came close to scoring twice in quick succession. Their lethal striker, Noko Lamola, missed a fortune in the eighth minute after receiving a neat pass from Xiluva Tshabalala inside the box. She hesitated for far too long to unleash and ultimately lostThepossession.visitorsfrom Polokwane took control of the game in the opening minutes of the last half, but finding their way through the rock-solid defence of First Touch was difficult for them. Noko Lamola of Maindis was the only player who was reprimanded with a card. She was lucky not to see red after she had kicked the opposition’s keeper, Polori Magabene, in the face towards the end of the game.

The war against crime can be won as long as communities keep their young people away from crime by involving them in sporting codes,” he Nemukulasaid.said that the final matches would be played on Saturday, 27 August, and no-one would go home empty handed. The overall winners leave with R5 000, while the runner-up team gets R4 000. The third- and fourth-placed teams each get R2 000, and the fifth- to eighth-placed teams will be given R750 each. By Silas Nduvheni In an effort to encourage young people to participate in healthy activities, well-known businessman Mr Awelani Marole has launched the Mukonazwothe Palace Soccer Tournament at the Mukula Avalon sports grounds, where it kicked off on Saturday, 13 August. According to one of the organisers of the tourna ment, Rihangwele “Sir Meat” Nemukula, 16 teams from surrounding villages, such as Mukula, Tshitavha, Muhuyu, Ngwenani, and others, will be competing against each other.

By Frank Mavhungu Lacoste Morning Stars are still battling to come to terms with the 3-4 defeat they suffered at the hands of Sisters FC in their Sasol Women’s League match that was played at the Nwamitwa Grounds outside Tzaneen on Sunday. What is making the defeat more of a bitter pill to swallow for Morning Stars is the fact that they were leading 3-0 at the end of the first half. The managing director of Morning Stars, Mr Emmanuel Mudau, could not hide his anger and frustration after the game. He put the blame squarely on the technical staff of the team. According to him, the double substitutions they effected in the opening minutes of the last half proved to be a suicidal move. He said that the home side were all over them throughout the last stanza, throwing mis siles from all angles time after time. He said that his team could have easily defended their 3-0 lead until the end of the game with the players with whom they had started the game. He reckoned that they should have continued to play their normal attacking football in the last half. Gumani “Mphela” Muliba na scored a brace for Morning Stars while the third goal was an honour to Surprise Mphigalale. Nteya “Shalulile” Bathabile scored the four goals for Sisters. The defeat has done Morning Stars a lot of harm. The team were leading the pack with 34 points, three ahead of Two for Joy Ladies FC, with the same number of matches played before last Sunday’s match. Two for Joy have a match in hand as they did not play last weekend. Should Two for Joy manage to win their remaining match, they will still be in the second position on the log standings as Morning Stars had scored moreThegoals.champions will most likely be determined by the result of the match between the two teams as they will test each other’s strength in their last fixture of the season.
By Frank Mavhungu As part of their preparations for the new season, Black Leopards have bolstered last season’s squad by signing 10 new players. The new acquisitions include a Namibian striker, Betuel Muzeu, and a goalkeeper, Mashudu Makhavhu. According to the spokesperson for the club, Mr Divhambele Mbalavhali, Muzeu was recruited from the Namibian professional side, Tura Magic FC. Mashudu Makhavhu was playing for the Rabali-based ABC Motsepe League side, Blackpool FC, last season. The other new signees are: Kabelo Phasha (left back) from Ditlou FC, Wanga Khorommbi (midfielder) from United Artists, Thapelo Maleka (midfielder) from Uthongathi FC, Leroy Lephalala (midfielder) from Baroka FC, Vusi Mkhwanazi (midfielder) from the DStv Premiership side, Swallows FC, Evans Forane (midfielder) from Letlhabile United, Toporo Motsuku (midfielder) from Vondwe XI Bullets and Ndamulelo Radzilani (midfielder) from Masakona Young Tigers. Mbalavhali said that their aim was to start the new season with a bang. He said that they wanted to avoid a recurrence of what had happened to them last season, where the team had only shown some signs of seriousness in their last 10 matches. Lidoda duvha had completed their programme in the ninth position on the log standings after collecting 26 points in their last 10 games last season. Asked whether they were still planning to sign more players before their first league match, Mr MC, as he is affectionately called, said that anything was still possible, adding that the technical staff were still assessing a number of Blackplayers.Leopards will commence their new season by hosting Hungry Lions FC at the refurbished Malamulele Stadium next Saturday, 3 September.
