Coach of Black Leopards linked to match fixing scandal

Banned for life

By Frank Mavhungu The head coach of Black Leopards, Mr Sunday Chidzambwa, has been banned from football for the rest of his life. This shocking announcement was made by the Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) last Friday.

Chidzambwa’s name is among the officials and players who were found to be part of the match-fixing scandal investigated by the independent commission of enquiry that was appointed by that country’s football federation. According to the vice-president of ZIFA, Mr Ndumiso Gumede, Chidzambwa, together with two players who are currently playing for South African teams, Method Mwanjali and Thomas Sweswe, were leading figures in colluding with an Asian betting syndicate when Zimbabwe’s national team undertook trips to the Far East for friendly internationals between 2007 and 2009.

Mwanjali and Sweswe are playing for Mamelodi Sundowns and Bidvest Wits respectively.

When asked what the banishment meant to the players and officials currently working outside the borders of Zimbabwe, Gumede said that ZIFA did not have jurisdiction over them. He indicated that they would only wait for the world’s football controlling body, FIFA, to endorse the decision.

“Once FIFA endorses our decision, it will effectively bring to an end the football careers of all the culprits, whether they are working in Europe or in South Africa,” said Gumede.

Another Mamelodi Sundowns player, Nyasha Mushekwi, is also implicated in the scandal. Mushekwi’s sanction is a suspension from football for eight years, which will also take effect once FIFA ratifies the decision taken by ZIFA. The other officials who are banned for life include the former ZIFA general secretary Mr Henrietta Rushwaya, who is portrayed as the mastermind behind the affair, and former coach Mr Rodwell Dhlakama.

When approached for comment, the soft-spoken Mr Chidzambwa said that he would only comment after his meeting with ZIFA. He further revealed in a telephonic interview with Limpopo Mirror that he was on his way to Harare.

Chidzambwa was on the team’s technical bench when his team lost 0-2 to Orlando Pirates in their Telkom KO match at the Peter Mokaba Stadium last Saturday evening.

SA and Zim to create economic zones The governments of Zimbabwe and South Africa have engaged each other to create economic zones in their respective countries to boost investment.

The initiative is being spearheaded by Zimbabwe’s Ministry of Economic Planning and Investment Promotion and South Africa’s Department of Trade and Industry.

Economic zones are areas where local and foreign investors or companies who invest there are given preferential benefits, such as low taxation and low rentals.

Speaking during the fourth Investment and Trade Initiative

between visiting South African business delegates and local business people, Zimbabwe’s deputy minister of Economic Planning and Investment Promotion, Dr Samuel Undenge, said the Bilateral Investment Promotion and Protection Agreement signed in 2010 by the two governments would help in the creation of the economic zones.

“As a ministry, we are looking at creating economic zones, and we have identified Beit Bridge as an economic zone.

It was chosen primarily because of its proximity to South Africa. Once we create this economic zone, it will be set up

as an investment zone. We want to create an economic investment destination,” he said. He added that the economic zones were important as the continent was moving towards economic integration.

South Africa’s deputy director-general for Enterprise and Development in the Department of Trade and Industry, Mr Sipho Zikode, said they were busy crafting a special document to guide the 12 identified economic zones in South Africa. “Musina is one of the chosen economic zones in South Africa, and we also want to create linkages with Beit Bridge.”

“Report gender-based violence quickly” Victims of all forms of gender based violence were urged to report the matter as soon as it happens, so that the police can act quickly.

The call was made by Limpopo’s Thohoyandou Cluster Commander, Brig Nelson Marungane, during the Limpopo men’s indaba, aimed at creating awareness about gender-based violence and its prevention.

The indaba, which was held at the 2 Ten Hotel a fortnight ago, was organised by the South African Local Government Association (SALGA), in conjunction with the SAPS, Sonke Gender

Justice Network, the Munna Ndi Nnyi? men’s forum and the Commission on Gender Equality.

“We as police officers have found that most of the victims of gender-based violence kept silent or reported the matter very late.

People should not take so long to report abuse,” said Marungane.

He added that they were worried that some gender-based violence cases were not reported, “because perpetrators are breadwinners in the family”. The victims are afraid to report because, if the perpetrator were arrested and charged, the family members would be left without any one to

support them financially.”

The media relations manager of the Sonke Gender Justice Network, Mr Mbuyiselo Botha, stressed that men should not keep quiet about gender-based violence. “They must raise their voices at home, in their workplaces and also in their places of worship.”

Kgosigadi Nchabeleng, who represented the Limpopo House of Traditional Leaders, said that “it is our responsibility to create and keep a violence-free society, by engaging communities to report gender-based violence to the police”.

Communities receive road safety tips In their attempt to save lives, the Department of Roads and Safety is busy educating the community on safety measures as part of their “Arrive Alive” campaign.

According to Ms Vanessa Nethenzheni-Ratshilumela, a road safety officer in the department, the main aim of this campaign is to educate the community about road safety measures, “so that we can save lives on our roads, especially during festive seasons as many accidents happen during these periods.”

“Road safety is not a one-man show; it is the responsibility of all road-users,” said NthenzheniRatshilumela. “In this campaign, we are dealing with all road users. Pedestrians must know all the road signs and must know that they should walk on the right-hand side of the road.

“Pedestrians must wear bright colours, so that they can be visible,” said Nthenzheni-Ratshilumela.

They are also advised to avoid drinking and walking and only cross the roads at the pedestrian crossing lines, she added.

Nthenzheni-Ratshilumela said the people must avoid hitch-hiking while standing in the middle of the road the way school children do.

“Avoid getting into a moving car or alighting from a moving car. Always wear your safety belt and don’t disturb the driver,” she said.

Members of the community are also advised to adhere to and observe road signs as they are a

means of communication to all road users, including drivers and pedestrians. “Don’t remove road signs or paste papers on them as they will end up not serving their purpose,” she added.

According to the new law, which became effective last month, a driver can be arrested for exceeding the speed limit by 30km/h. The new law also states that all vehicles older than 10 years will have to be tested for roadworthiness.

King Toni new patron of Bible Society The Bible Society of South Africa paid homage to the king of the Vhavenda, Khosikhulu Vho-Toni Mphephu Ramabulana, during a meeting at the Mphephu Traditional Authority offices last Wednesday.

The chairperson for the Bible Society of South Africa in Limpopo, Rev Norman Ligege, said that the Bible Society acknowledged and accepted Ramabulana as the foremost traditional leader of the Vhavenda people. He then requested the king to become an official patron of the Bible Society at national level.

The king accepted the offer and told the Bible Society's local committee that, as a traditional

leader for the people, he was always available whenever the people needed him or his assistance.

"I am in this position because God wanted it to be this way. I will serve God's people always,” he added.

The Bible Society told King Mphephu that they had at least one million Bibles in English, which they intended to distribute to Grade 7s in selected schools around the province. Two boxes of sample Bibles were handed over to the Mphephu Traditional Authority.

Ligege reminded the community that the purpose of the Bible Society was to translate, print and distribute as many Bibles

as possible, to give all people access to the Word of God. “The gift of Bibles to the pupils in this area is good news,” Khosikhulu Mphephu said, referring to the words Good News that are printed on the covers of the donated Bibles. “We thank the Bible Society on behalf of the school children who are to receive the Bibles.”

The team also handed a trophy of acknowledgement to Ramabulana. “Now that Mailau-sumbwa (Khosikhulu) has accepted the offer of becoming our patron, we'll report this to the head office in Cape Town and a date for a welcoming ceremony will be set,” said Rev Ligege.

“Charge made me wiser” - Mutshinyali “It was not a good experience, but experiences like these make you wiser and open your eyes,” said Makhado Municipality’s municipal manager, Mr Isaac Mutshinyali.

The experience that the municipal manager, in office since 3 September this year, is referring to is the criminal charge laid against him in his capacity as municipal manager of the Greater Letaba Municipality.

Mutshinyali talked openly to the Limpopo Mirror about the scenario that led up to the criminal charge concerning an alleged questionable approval of a R2.5 million payment. The charge had been laid by the DA at the Modjadjiskloof police station in the beginning of August. The same charge included the former CFO of Greater Letaba, Mr Elias Masiya, and the current technical director, Mr William Molokomme. Masiya left Greater

“It was not a good experience, but experiences like these make you wiser and open your eyes,” said Makhado Municipality’s new municipal manager, Mr Isaac Mutshinyali, in an open conversation on what had happened at the previous municipality where he was employed, leading up to a criminal charge against him.

Letaba last year, while Mutshinyali left in May this year and Molokomme was reappointed for another five years.

The investigation will take its course. “Let them investigate; that is fine. Luckily, I have all my documentation in place. I don’t really think there is a case, but it dented my name, unfortunately,” Mutshinyali said.

Mutshinyali described his view of the preceding circumstances. The owner of a company who was awarded the tender of repairing and rebuilding streets in Modjadjiskloof never appeared in person at the municipality but sent an employee to be the face of the company. The first claim went through to the correct account of the owner. In the meantime, this employee was no longer working at the company but provided the municipality with the necessary forms and documentation of the owner that he was the appointed subcontractor. The second payment was made into the new account supplied by the subcontractor.

“In the meantime, the owner sued the company of the subcontractor, who subsequently got arrested.

Then the owner came to the fore for the first time and brought a letter from his attorney to say that the contract was theirs. If the document by the subcontractor had been forged, then that is a matter between the contractor and subcontractor. We had paid with attached documentation; we had done it by the book,” Mutshinyali said.

DA provincial leader Jacques Smalle said that the payment to the former employee of Star Mill Developers was made “without proper checks, apparently when this employee had merely made a claim to the municipality that the tender was theirs.

The Municipal Finance Management Act makes it clear that it is an offence under section 173 for any official to spend any money belonging to the municipality, either negligently or in an unauthorised manner. The police must now probe how a person who never had any contractual tender agreement with the municipality ended up being paid millions of rand,” Smalle said.

The former municipal manager of the Makhado Municipality, Mr Shadrack Tshikalange, similarly left with criminal charges hanging over his head.

Huge loss after robbers hit Sibasa shop A Sibasa-based businessman is livid, blaming a security company he had hired to look after his business, for a robbery that took place at the shop.

Zahid Khan of MK Autospares in Sibasa said he locked up his business last Tuesday, only to find it broken into the following morning. He said he had a contract with a wellknown security company to guard his premises.

According to him, he was surprised that he did not receive any report from the security company. It is suspected that thieves cut open the roof and fled with an undisclosed amount of cash. They even tried to take the till through the roof,

he added.

“I always make sure that all our windows and doors are left tightly closed and, to add to our security in the shop, we have hired a security company to look after the premises. I was surprised to find that the business was burgled when I arrived for duty on Wednesday morning,” said Khan.

“Everything was in a mess.

They had ransacked the business, possibly looking for money. They went off with more than R4 000 in cash and damaged a till to the value of more than R5 000. The damage in the shop is estimated at more than R10 000, which is a big loss for a business like ours,” he added.

He said what further infuriated

him was that the company said that they had called him on his phone, but they never did. “I want them to pay for the loss we suffered before we can talk of a way forward. I have already made up my mind; I am no longer doing business with them,” he said.

Thohoyandou police spokesperson Constable Avhafarei Tshiovhe confirmed the breakin. “We have opened a housebreaking case and no arrests have been made so far. We are urging members of the public who might have information about the incident to please notify us,” said Tshiovhe.

Nobody at the security company was available for comment.

Cellphone or postcard-size photos will not be considered for the competition.

All entries must clearly indicate who the photographer is, their contact details, where

and when the photo was taken and what camera was used. Although technical aspects such as the quality and sharpness of the photo will be taken into account, the photo should, however, only make for a nice picture.

Each of the 12 winning photographs will be bought from the photographer at a price of R500 per photo. Entries can be handed in at the office of the Zoutpansberger at 16B Joubert Street, Louis Trichardt.

Dynamos blow Powerline off the park

The keeper of Dynamos, Thendo Shivhishi, executed a brilliant save when he palmed the ball away. Mashudu Nengovhela completed his brace and scored his team’s third goal in the 80th minute. Several Beit Bridge residents were left stranded after heavy rains in the border town flooded their homes, resulting in some losing their belongings.

The worst affected were residents living around the Dulibadzimu bus terminus, which is situated in a low-lying area.

The heavy rains started on Friday last week at around 05:00 until around midday, and the bus terminus area remained waterlogged for the better part of the day, forcing the Beit Bridge Town Council to relocate it temporarily to higher ground.

Vagrants and the street beggars who live around the area adjacent to the bus terminus were not spared as water, which flowed down a stream that feeds into the Limpopo River, swept away their belongings, creating a minihumanitarian crisis. Their food and belongings were washed away in the flood.

By midday, cross-border buses, cars and local taxis remained stuck in the muddy waters at the bus terminus while the pre-cast wall was swept away by the floods. Some local motorists were seen clearing the drainage system along the road leading to Dulibadzimu as they sought to clear the flooded roads that badly affected the flow of traffic.

town, with some becoming virtually impassable.

The Beit Bridge town secretary, Dr Sipho Singo, said close to 100 families were affected by the floods. He attributed the development to the poor drainage system, saying the local authority was in the process of addressing the problem. “The people affected most are those whose dwellings were constructed in a low-lying area with poor drainage, and we want to address that challenge,” he said.

Singo said they had started digging deeper trenches to divert the flow of water at the bus terminus and houses around the same area.

He said residents staying in the low-lying areas would be allocated new residential stands in a new suburb, pending the demolition of the old buildings.

“The problem of water logging is being attended to urgently and we hope to contain the flow of the water within a few weeks. We have already bought equipment, including pipes, to divert the flow of the water into Wamlala stream without water-logging the terminus, which is located in a low-lying area. Our personnel are digging the trenches along which water will flow directly into the Limpopo River,” he added.

Singo said they had towed away buses that had been stuck in the mud, adding that they had

since temporarily relocated the bus terminus, pending the laying of drainage pipes at Dulibadzimu bus terminus.

When Limpopo Mirror visited some of the affected homes in Dulibadzimu suburb, residents were busy scooping water out of their houses while others were busy removing soaked household property out of their rooms.

One of the affected residents, Mr Jacob Gumuro, said: “By 07:00, most of our houses were flooded with water at knee-high level. We started throwing most of our belongings out through the window, with some of them being swept away by the flood.

Our food supplies were also destroyed. We hope the local authority will address this problem as a matter of urgency, so that we don’t have a recurrence of such incidents, particularly taking into consideration that the rain season has started,” he said.

Another resident, Mrs Selina Muleya, said other residents had to take their children out of the flooded houses through the windows.

“I was lucky that my 18-monthold baby didn’t drown as some residents helped me take her out of the house through the window.

I lost my clothes, food stuff and a few other belongings, however, after they were washed away by the flood,” she said.

Rhino poaching memorandum not signed South Africa’s efforts to address the ongoing slaughter of rhinos for their horns have received a major setback.

This follows the 11th Conference of Parties (COP 11) that was held in India last week. South Africa was supposed to sign a memorandum of understanding with the Vietnamese Government.

This did not happen.

According to the Department of Environmental Affairs (DEA), the Vietnamese Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Le Luong Minh, was not able to attend the conference in Hyderabad, India. The department confirmed that SA’s Minister of Water and Environmental Affairs, Edna Molewa, was at the conference, but they were unable to specify why Minh could not attend the conference.

The memorandum would have covered the cooperation between the two countries in biodiversity management, law enforcement and other relevant legislation. The goal would have been not only to address the poaching of rhinos, but also any threats to a broad range of wildlife in South Africa.

The department confirmed that both countries are keen to sign the memorandum, but that both ministers’ schedules will first have to be synchronised.

“Both countries are still committed to entering into a memorandum, and discussions on a future date for both ministers to sign the memorandum are already underway,” said national DEA spokesperson Albi Modise on Monday. This follows the department’s recent poaching statistics which indicate that 467 rhinos have been slaughtered in illegal killings since the beginning of this year.

According to the department, as of 22 October,

281 rhinos have been killed in the Kruger National Park. Limpopo has listed the highest number of poached rhinos at 49 killed. The number of rhinos poached still exceeds the number of arrests that have been made. According to statistics provided by the DEA, only 207 rhino-poaching-related arrests have been made. Of these, 51 occurred in the Kruger National Park and 34 in the Limpopo Province.

Top achievement for Sumbandila pupil Yvonne Mulaudzi, a Grade 12 pupil at Tshikevha Christian School, has received several awards from her school to acknowledge her outstanding academic performance this year.

Sponsored by the Sumbandila Scholarship Trust, she was the top pupil in mathematics, physical science, life sciences and geography and received awards for this at the school’s Grade12 farewell. The principal of Tshikevha, Mr Ratshibvuma, said that Yvonne achieved A symbols in all her subjects except for Afrikaans, in which she got a B. The school is confident that she will do well in the final exams. Yvonne is very hopeful of realising her ambition to study medicine at the University of Cape Town.

The Sumbandila Scholarship Trust is a nonprofit organisation in the field of secondary education, which provides both full scholarships to private schools as well as an educational outreach

programme to impoverished rural children in the Vhembe District. It was founded in 2007 and operates in partnership with Ridgeway College.

Pupils are selected annually on the basis of academic achievement and outstanding potential. The goal is to provide bright, determined children with a fully rounded education and provides intensive educational support and mentorship through full scholarships and a programme of Saturday and holiday schools, based at Ridgeway College.

The executive director of the Sumbandila Scholarship Trust, Ms Leigh Bristow, said that Yvonne was sponsored by Sumbandila to go to Tshikevha Christian School. She was only there from Grade 11 and had performed exceptionally well. “She was part of Sumbandila’s Saturday school programme, but explained to us in Grade 10 that she had not had a mathematics or a science teacher for an entire term at the school she was then attending and she wanted to study medicine.

That was when we decided to move her out of her government school into Tshikevha, an independent school with a fine academic record.”

Sumbandila’s Saturday school programme for the first 20 children selected started in 2008 and there are now five classes across all secondary grades, with a total of 137 students from 53 schools in the rural areas. In the full scholarship programme, 25 pupils are enrolled at Ridgeway College and accommodated in the hostel, one is at St Albans in Pretoria, one at Emmanuel Christian School and three are enrolled in Tshikevha Christian School.

The first eight full scholarship students are completing Grade 12 this year at Ridgeway College.

All of them have obtained bursaries for university tuition in various fields, including engineering, business studies, geology and social work. A pupil from the Saturday school programme also obtained a bursary for actuarial science.

Cattle farmers complain about bad service A group of cattle owners from Tshikhwani in Madombidzha village are complaining about the lack of service delivery from the side of the Department of Agriculture’s Makhado office as well as the provincial Department of Rural Development and Land Reform.

This follows after cattle owners and the two parties entered into an agreement that the cattle owners’ grazing camp would be fenced. This became necessary after the local traditional leader had allegedly allocated large portions of the grazing camp to business individuals, who eventually let the allocated spaces deteriorate.

According to information made available by the Public Protector’s provincial representative, Mr Sphelo Samuels, the cattle owners or vhoramadanga had complained to his office about the lack of grazing land. They alleged that they had reported the matter to the Sinthumule Traditional Authority and the office had done nothing to help them. That was when they decided to go to the Public Protector.

The Public Protector then communicated with

the Sinthumule Traditional Authority and the agricultural officer, Mr Ratshilumela Raedane, where they further liaised with vhoramadanga. The parties agreed that at least 65 hectares should be allocated to vhoramadanga and that officials would measure the area to determine the size of the grazing land available. The Department of Agriculture requested the cattle owners “to open a way or line by cutting the trees and shrubs to enable the fence to be erected smoothly,” said the Public Protector.

The agreement was reached late last year and the grazing camp still remains without a fence and no official measurements have been taken so far.

“They’re playing a hide-and-seek game with us,” said the chairperson of the Vhoramadanga vha Tshikhwani, Mr Solomon Masala (97) “They told us they would find some money to pay a service provider, who would then remove all the shrubs.

Now they’re telling stories and our cattle are not safe roaming the village.”

Masala adds that cattle owners had measured the grazing camp and found only 40 hectares and not the 65 hectares to which they had agreed. He further alleges that the local traditional leader had taken the portion which belonged to vhoramadanga and given it to somebody else.

There is only an old borehole on the land.

The borehole purportedly belongs to vhoramadanga.

Mr Raedane maintains that the cattle owners had initially agreed to cutting off the trees and shrubs, but that the problem came when Mr Avhashoni Magada of the provincial Department of Rural Development and Land Reform advised them not to clear the area, saying that it was not their job and that a service provider would be sought at his department’s expense.

Mr Magada, however, denies this and said the cattle owners are being impatient and not cooperative.

Suspected killer of train driver arrested The police have arrested a suspect who they believed could be responsible for the death and rape of Nare Mashamaite, the train driver who was killed three months ago in Makhado (Louis Trichardt).

The 22-year-old Manyere Jerry Shuma from Zimbabwe was arrested and appeared in the Louis Trichardt District Court on Tuesday, 16 October.

Mashamaite was strangled to death earlier this year when she and her assistant driver stopped the train at the Makhado train station to inspect what they thought were brake failures. The assistant managed to escape unarmed.

Shuma, who, according to information provided by the police, was initially arrested in connection with a series of housebreakings in Tshiwavhlusiku, was only later questioned about the murder.

According to a police statement, their investigations positively linked Shuma to the murder and rape.

Shuma appeared briefly in court again on Monday, 22 October.

Police deal hammer blow to piracy

No bail for alleged gang of bombers

Artists and musicians in Thohoyandou who were hard hit by piracy in recent times are sighing with relief, following the arrest of some of the kingpins in the trade.

Artists in the area suffered financially and some were even attacked when trying to confiscate their music from pirate sellers.

One such artist who was at the receiving end is famous Tshivenda music artist Tendani Nephawe, known as Mutendas in music circles.

After an outcry by artists, a meeting between the Film and Publications Board, artists and the police was held and it was decided that they all should work together in the war against piracy.

A police task team was also formed to fight the scourge of piracy. When it was formed a month ago, its head, Lt Col Tshifhiwa Mutepe, promised to leave no stone unturned in ridding Thohoyandou of the scourge of piracy. True to his word, in no time Thohoyandou town was cleared of all those who used to sell fake CDs and DVDs, with many

Mutepe said the recent successes showed that they were determined to rid the town of piracy.

“We will make this area a difficult area to operate in for the pirates. We have tightened the screws and, through our cooperation with the artists, the pirates will soon have no place to hide. We are going to hunt them wherever they are and bring them to book,” said Mutepe.

He said they were going to form partnerships with different stakeholders to help them in the fight against piracy. “We will visit our traditional leaders and make them aware of piracy, which is killing the livelihood of our artists. We are not only going to arrest the pirates, but we will also arrest those who buy pirated music and videos. By so doing, we will be closing the market, which will also discourage them from continuing to copy CDs and DVDs. Together, we will win the war,” he said.

Gogo (68) completes basic education A Limpopo granny completed her basic education at the aged of 68, through a mass literacy education campaign, called Kha ri Gude.

Gogo Ndaheni Nkuna of Hlaniki village was among the 200 adults who received their certificates of standard ABET level I during a ceremony at the Pentecostal Assembly of God Church in Giyani on Sunday.

According to Nkuna, poverty and hardship had denied her the opportunity to receive a basic

education. “I’m happy now. I am now able to go to the bank or receive my social grant without the assistance from anybody else,” she added.

Nkuna said the fact that she grew up uneducated wasted many years and robbed her of her freedom and her privacy. She mentioned that when her husband worked in the Johannesburg area, she was forced to give his letters to other people to read it for her. Pastor Benny Machimani from the Department of Basic Education said the campaign was launched in February 2008, with the intention of enabling 4,7 million people above the age of 15 years to become literate and numerate. New dynamic CFO appointed at Makhado municipality The Makhado Municipality appointed a new chief financial officer (CFO) in the person of a dynamic young woman who used to work at the office of the auditor general (AG).

The appointment of Johannesburg-born Ms Mikateko Palesa Makhubela (31) became effective on 1 October after the previous CFO, Mr Hitler Maluleke, left the municipality in March this year.

Makhubela matriculated in 1999 at Queen’s High School in Johannesburg and was a B Com Accounting graduate of the Midrand Graduate Institute. She is currently pursuing a B Compt Honours with UNISA. Her working experience started in 2004 when she joined the banking industry, and from January 2008 till September 2012, she was at the AG’s regional office in Johannesburg, from where she engaged with district and local government to ensure that the MFMA was complied to.

Huge celebrations for national reggae icon Madigage to be buried this weekend Limpopo-born international reggae star Colbert and befitting to celebrate his birthday and his years Mukwevho will celebrate his 47th birthday and three decades in the music industry in style by recording a live DVD and CD. Mukwevho, of Harley and the Rasta Family fame, rubbed shoulders with the country’s best during his formative years in Sello “Chicco” Twala and the late Brenda Fassie, with whom he recorded.

Mukwevho has released numerous successful albums so far, and Mulovha Namusi na Matshelo has become like a national anthem in several parts of the country.

“To us, music is a calling. It is a way of life and a platform for us to convey the message to the masses. The memorial service of the late Bafana Bafana assistant coach, Thomas Madigage, will be held at the Saulsville Arena this morning (Friday), starting at 10:00. He will be buried at Driekop, 120 km east of Polokwane, on Sunday.

Madigage was killed in an accident between Burgersfort and Polokwane on Thursday evening. Thomas was humble and dedicated to his work but at the same time full of life.

He was truly a gift to the nation and will be sadly missed,” said Petersen. Coach Gordon Igesund, who was part of the delegation that also included second assistant coach, Serame Letsoaka, team manager, Barney Kujane and head of national teams, Ace Kika, struggled to hold back tears when he met Madigage’s 84-year old mother, Pauline. “Tommy was not only my colleague, he was an honest friend, wonderful person and I will not find another sincere individual like him. I have been robbed of a true friend,” said an emotional coach.

Madigage played 311 games during his career and scored 51 goals. He had four caps for Bafana Bafana and was assistant coach for Supersport United from 2004 to 2012, helping them win three successive league titles from 2008-2010.

The MEC for Safety, Security and Liaison, Ms Florence Radzilani, added her voice to the many people who have sent a message of condolence to the family and friends of Madigage.

She said that Madigage had joined the department’s crime awareness campaign in the village of Taung, in the Greater Tubatse Local Municipality in Sekhukhune, the afternoon before his death. “Madigage was in the area to contribute to nation building, notwithstanding the fact that, two days before, he was on the bench with Coach Gordon Igesund in Nairobi, Kenya,” she added. Radzilani added that Madigage was no stranger to community development, particularly in Limpopo. “Through his Thomas Madigage8 Foundation he has touched the lives of many people in the province through football development, bursaries, school uniforms, computers and groceries,” she said.

According to her,Madigage was a worthy and committed partner in the Department for Safety, Security and Liaison’s fight against crime.

Arrested for theft The Makhado Police have arrested a 25-yearold man in connection with two cases of theft out of motor vehicles, which took place on 11 and 13 October.

The suspect is alleged to have broken into a vehicle parked in Rissik Street and stolen a handbag, wallet and a cheque book. He was later linked to a similar case which happened on 13 October during the day along Songozwi Street’s parking area, where a pair of sunglasses, gloves and a handbag with a purse inside were stolen.

“In the wake of incidents of theft out of motor vehicles, we appreciate the efforts made by our foot soldiers on the ground for the success in arresting the suspect,” said the spokesperson for the Makhado police, Capt Maano Sadiki.

In a separate case, a 27-year-old suspect was also arrested, following a robbery which took place during the evening of 28 October. The victim was robbed of his cash in the vicinity of the Makhado train station.

Beefed-up Basel FC aim to win Second Division Basel FC, a team participating in the Promotional Second Division, formerly known as the Vodacom Promotional League, believe that nothing will stop them from gaining promotion to the National First Division at the end of the season.

According to the team’s manager, Mr Vhutshilo Makhado, they have strengthened all parts of their game in preparation for the current season. They have promoted their former killer-striker, Japhta Mabosho, to assistant coach and have signed a number of seasoned players. A former striker of Black Leopards and Mpumalanga Black Aces, Walter Ramulondi, and a former Kaizer Chiefs right back, Tshifhiwa Mmbooi, are some of the new signees. When asked about the rumour that the former Black Leopards and Dynamos striker, Mulondo Sikhwivhilu, is on the brink of sealing a deal with the club, Makhado dismissed it as baseless and unfounded.

Maluleke said there were people who were selling clinic cards “to undocumented people who are living in South Africa”. He mentioned that some people sold the cards for up to R1 000 to non-South Africans, so that they could benefit from social grants like regular South Africans. “This is bad, because it makes it difficult for our government to cater for deserving citizens who are budgeted for,” said Maluleke.

“Don’t harbour foreigners. Those who harbour foreigners will be arrested. We are also advising the community to register children within 30 days of their birth. It will help us to have proper control of our processes and records,” he added.

Lisiba Alpheus Selema (51) of Zone Two, Mahwelereng, Mokopane, and Earnest Mmbulaheni Muofhe (36) of Johannesburg were convicted on their own pleas of guilty to contravening a section of the Immigration Act (assisting border jumpers)

by Magistrate Gloria Takundwa.

In addition to the sentence, Selema and Muofhe were slapped with another six months in jail, which were conditionally suspended for five years.

The prosecutor, Ms Memory Mandityira, said that on 11 October Selema arrived at Beit Bridge Border Post driving his car, a Limpopo-registered Toyota Corolla. He was heading towards South Africa in the company of Charles Chitimbe, a Zimbabwean resident from Chegutu. As part of the border formalities, the two men were asked to produce their passports by a local police officer manning the exit gate, during which Chitimbe failed to produce his travel document. On being quizzed, Chitimbe revealed that he had entered into a deal with Selema, so that the latter could smuggle him into South Africa for a fee. Selema was then arrested. Chitimbe was ordered to pay a fine of US $10 at the local immigration desk.

On the same day, Muofhe also arrived at Beit Bridge Border Post, driving a Gauteng-registered VW kombi, which was heading to Johannesburg.

He was travelling with Brenda Mupereki, another illegal immigrant who had no passport. On being intercepted by a police detective at the exit gate, Mupereki was asked to produce her travel document. She failed to do so, leading to Muofhe’s being arrested for attempting to smuggle her into South Africa.

Border jumper commits suicide

A 25-year-old suspected border jumper from Zaka village outside Beit Bridge committed suicide by hanging himself from a tree, police have said.

Police spokesperson Sgt Loveness Mangena said Innocent Makhado committed suicide last Thursday in a bushy area near the Beit Bridge Border Post.

“Our investigations indicate that Makhado entered the country illegally through Beit Bridge Border Post and proceeded to Dulibadzimu Bus Terminus, where he bought a rope.

He then went to a nearby bushy area and committed suicide by hanging himself from a tree,” she said.

Mangena said they discovered a suicide note and a valid Zimbabwean passport, which had not been stamped by immigration authorities on both sides of the border, an indication that he was an illegal immigrant. According to the suicide note, Makhado killed himself “because of social problems”. The body was taken to Beit Bridge District Hospital mortuary and a post mortem was waived as police suspected no foul play.

The manager of the Vhufuli Community Crèche, Ms Livhuwani Mabuda, has hailed the donations to their crèche by the Thohoyandou branch of Old Mutual as another way of changing the lives of poor children. Three weeks ago, Old Mutual presented the crèche with R20 000. The money will be used to erect a fence, fix the roofing and also to paint the buildings.

Arrested for robbing and stripping illegals Two Beit Bridge residents, linked to a notorious robbery syndicate operating along the Limpopo River, werehauled before the court on Friday for allegedly stripping two suspected border jumpers naked before robbing them of their clothes, R300 and a cell phone at knife point.

Patrick Dhiziri (19) and Sydney Makoti (20), both of Dulibadzimu suburb in the border town, were not asked to plead to two counts of robbery when they appeared before Magistrate Gloria Takundwa.

The case was postponed to

29 October and they remain in custody.

The prosecutor, Ms Memory Mandityira, said that on 6 October at around 14:00, the two victims were spotted by the accused near the Limpopo River, intending to cross into South Africa illegally.

Dhiziri and Makoti, who were armed with a knife and a catapult loaded with a stone, allegedly ordered the two men to stop.

Makoti allegedly grabbed one of them and demanded money amid threats to stab him with the knife.

Mandityira said Makoti then

stripped the complainants of their trousers and a jacket, while Dhiziri grabbed a cell phone, R300 and a pair of sports shoes.

They then fled the scene.

The complainants reported the matter to the police, leading to the arrest of Makoti.

He was spotted by the complainant while sleeping in a tunnel under the New Limpopo Bridge. The prosecutor added that Makoti then led the detectives to a house in Dulibadzimu, where they found Dhiziri. They also recovered a pair of sports shoes, a jacket and a Nokia 1152 cell phone.

Border jumper drowns in Limpopo River A border jumper drowned in the flooded Limpopo River while attempting to cross the border into Zimbabwe illegally. He was identified as Sidion Munyai of Sasatshe village outside Beit Bridge.

Police spokesperson A/Insp Christopher Ngwenya said the incident occurred on Friday at the illegal Musetshe crossing. His

body was discovered on Monday by a local villager.

“Munyai was in the company of two friends, coming from South Africa and intending to cross back into Zimbabwe. They got into the flooded Limpopo River and started swimming, but Munyai was swept away and drowned,” he said.

His friends managed to swim

across and they tried to rescue Munyai but failed. His body, which was in a decomposed state, was discovered by a local villager three days later.

“As police we would like to warn people against using illegal crossing points, particularly now that we have approached the rainy season and most of our rivers are in flood,” said Ngwenya.

Swiss and Germans visit mission stations A delegation of some 120 visitors from Switzerland and Germany arrived in Limpopo last week and visited mission stations, heritage sites and other institutions, some of which were founded by Swiss missionaries in Elim, Shirley and Valdezia.

The event started at Elim Hospital, where the visitors expressed their love for the place and people through performing an orchestral item and singing choral songs.

Jacques Cherpillod from Switzerland said that the purpose of the visit was to interact with the local community through choral concerts in Giyani, Elim, Polokwane and Durban.

In an official ceremony held at the Njhakanjhaka Traditional Authority's hall, the acting mayor for the Makhado Municipality, Cllr Gideon Tshavhuyo, invited the Swiss and German visitors to consider investing financially

in the South African economy, particularly in the Makhado municipal area. “This is a positive role that former state president Mr Nelson Mandela spoke about and he encouraged people from outside South Africa to engage themselves in investing in our economy,” said Cllr Tshavhuyo.

The delegates from Switzerland and Germany had come at the request of a Giyani family, Musa Nkuna and his mother Violet Nkuna, who welcomed the visitors on behalf of the community. "South Africa is very good and people here are very sociable," remarked Jacques Cherpillod.

Musa also happens to sing as tenor in the Chocur de Chambre de R'Universite Fribourg choir (CCUF) in Switzerland. The choir is conducted by Mr Pascal Meyer. Mr Meyer led the choir in performing mellifluous melodies

at the Evangelical Presbyterian Church of SA in Elim and the pupils who were around expressed enjoyment with wide smiles.

According to the church's chairperson, Mr Ephraim Lowane, the Evangelical Presbyterian Church of SA in Elim was founded by Rev Ernest Creux in 1879. Some of Rev Creux's sons and daughters were buried in the churchyard. The visitors enjoyed watching and capturing images of the scenery.

Dynamos back in the NFD

Excellent away victory for Vhembe FET College After beating Dumasi All Stars 2-1 in their SAB League match at home two weeks ago, Vhembe FET College FC continued to collect points last weekend when they beat Mphego Real Rovers by the same margin at the Mphego grounds on Sunday.

Ater five months of uncertainty about their future as an affiliate of the National First Division, Dynamos have finally won their boardroom battle against Bay United and Carara Kicks.

Dynamos lodged complaints against Bay United and Carara Kicks after the final league matches last season. In their letters of complaint, Dynamos alleged that both Bay United and Carara Kicks had fielded improperly registered players in some of the league matches.
