“We can’t afford to play here” Vhembe’s three top teams won’t play in Thohoyandou because of “excessive” rental

By Kaizer Nengovhela The three Vhembe-based teams playing in the GladAfrica league are considering moving their home matches elsewhere, because of the high rent charged by the Thulamela Municipality for using the Thohoyandou Stadium.

This season, the Vhembe District has three teams

competing in the GladAfrica Championship, namely Black Leopards, Venda Football Academy (VFA) and Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila (TTM). The three teams are supposed to share the Thohoyandou Stadium as their home ground.

Stadium. With Covid-19 restrictions still in place, spectators are not allowed at matches and the teams have limited options available to increase their income. The three teams are apparently considering to rather use the old Peter Mokaba Stadium as their home ground for the season, where the rent is only R5 000 per match.

To just give an example: there’s security, there’s accommodation,” said Thidiela.

He said that in 2018, when his team returned to the elite league, the PSL had ruled that the Thohoyandou stadium was unfit to host league matches.

They quickly had to pay R50 000 for the maintenance of the stadium and had to search for sponsors to pay more than R700 000 to renovate the stadium.

Granny (99) stabbed to death after nephew accuses her of witchcraft

The provincial commissioner of police in Limpopo, Lieutenant General Thembe Hadebe, has strongly condemned the brutal murder of another senior citizen at the hands of a family member.

The provincial commissioner of police in Limpopo, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, has strongly condemned the brutal murder of a 99-year-old woman from Tshidzini-Tshilaphala village in the Tshaulu policing area just outside Thohoyandou, on Saturday, 21 August.

The elderly woman, identified as Munzhedzi Kwinda, was allegedly killed by her 59-year-old nephew, who lived with her in a family unit. According to Limpopo police spokesperson Briga-

dier Motlafela Mojapelo, the suspect allegedly accused his aunt of “wanting to kill him for ritual purposes”. The suspect then took a knife and allegedly stabbed the old woman to death. The police were called and, upon their arrival at the scene, the suspect was immediately arrested.

He appeared in the Tshaulu Periodic Court on Tuesday, 24 August, and the case was postponed to 26 October 2021 for medical observation. The suspect was remanded in custody.

Lt-Gen Hadebe called upon members of the community to refrain from resorting to violence, especially against vulnerable citizens, when resolving domestic disputes and advised people to ensure the safety of this vulnerable group.

Our foundation also helps rural-based school learners with shoes and uniforms, so that they can go to school fully dressed,” said Makosholo. Makosholo, who was joined by her staff members, presented their donation to the women and young girls of Shakadza on Sunday, 22 August. Unarine Humbulani, one of the young women who received packs of pads, said they were very thankful for Zazi Foundation’s donation as pads were

expensive and many of them were unemployed and could not afford to buy them. “Our young girls avoided going to school when they are on their menstrual cycle, but now they don’t have to feel self-conscious anymore,” said Humbulani.

Fire destroys seven-room house of family in Tsianda-Mashamba village

By Silas Nduvheni A single mother of four children, Ms Margret Azwinndini Mulaudzi (59) of Tshianda-Mashamba village just outside Thohoyandou, is battling to cope after her seven-room house was destroyed by a fire last Friday.

According to one of the children, Fhatuwani Mulaudzi, they initially did not realise that the house was on fire. He woke up his mother, who was sleeping, so that she could get ready for a shift at Tshilidzini Hospital. His mother works as a cleaner at the hospital and was called to come in for an

extra shift.

Ms Margret Mulaudzi said that shortly after she had left the house, she saw spikes of fire that quickly spread. The fire quickly destroyed furniture and other goods in the house.

“We don’t know what caused the fire. We immediately reported the matter to the Vuwani Disaster Centre, but unfortunately the house was gutted already,” said Fhatuwani Mulaudzi. He thanked the communities around Tsianda-Mashamba for the support they gave the family.

Fhatuwani, who is trainee firefighter in Thohoyandou, said his tablet, wi-fi router, stationery, clothes, and a

cellphone belonging to his mother were part of the items destroyed by the fire. He said that the family members were calling upon anyone who could assist to help the family rebuild the house.

“My mother is a single mother, who raised us under difficult conditions, and it took several years for her to build such a house. It will be difficult for her to rebuild the house,” he said.

Limpopo police spokesperson Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo said that the local police in Levubu were investigating the incident to try and establish what had caused the fire.

According to Limpopo police spokesperson Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo, the local police in Thohoyandou were telephonically alerted by Tswinga residents on Monday, 16 August at about 16:00, that a violent mob was about to kill two men in the village. The

police proceeded there and, on arrival, found the two victims lying in the street near some bushes. Stones, sticks and other objects were found not far from where they were lying.

“One of the victims was certified dead at the scene when the police arrived and identified as Surprise Munyai (22) of Tswinga Village. His friend, who is still fighting for

his life at a local medical facility, has been identified as Rinae Manngo (27) of Itsani Village,” Mojapelo said. “Preliminary investigations indicate that the two were assaulted by local community members, who accused the men of committing a series of crimes in their area.”

No arrests have been made regarding the mob justice yet, as the suspects are still

unknown at this stage. The police, however, are certain that their investigations will reveal the guilty parties eventually.

The traditional leader of Tswinga Village, Vhamusanda Mmbangiseni Tshishonga, admitted during his interview with Limpopo Mirror that crime in his village was very high and one of the worrying factors that he and his commu-

nities discussed on a regular basis.

“However, we advised our communities not to take the law into their own hands, but to rather report all cases to the police. We also warned thugs that they would bite the dust if they continued with their criminal activities, as crime doesn’t pay,” said Vhamusanda Tshishonga.

Local wordsmiths shine in AVBOB poetry competition

and Xitsonga language categories for their respective poems, called Hu ḓivha Ṋwali and Ntshembo.

The runners-up in both language categories are Sheila Maphalala (2nd place, Tshivenda), Elelwani Muthelo (3rd place, Tshivenda), MR Mathye (2nd place, Xitsonga) and Martin Ngobeni (3rd place, Xitsonga).

The winners in all 11 language categories were each awarded a cash prize of R10 000 plus a book voucher worth R2 500. The three finalists in each language category will also see their poems published in the annual anthology, I wish I’d said … Vol. 4. Ṋeluvhalani’s winning poem is a response to the loss of his beloved uncle, who had been a pillar in his family. This young man from Thohoyandou discovered his love of poetry as a teenager. “Without a proper platform to grow my passion, poetry remained a hobby,” he said. “I began writing poetry when I heard about the AVBOB Poetry Competition in 2019, and I am grateful for the opportunity this platform has given me.”

Maswanganye is originally from Chudu Village but currently resides in Pimville, Soweto. He works as a computer numerical control programmer by day and is a poet by night. He follows in the footsteps of other poet programmers such as the late Hugh Hodge and JM Coetzee. “I believe that poetry can heal the nation, physically and spiritually,” he said. “The AVBOB Poetry Competition has afforded me a platform to speak with and to the nation.”

According to AVBOB, at least 84% of the finalists were poets aged 35 and younger, which is indicative that young people are showing more interest in expressing their feelings through poetry.

The AVBOB Poetry Project came into existence in July 2017 with one clear goal, namely “to provide those at a loss for words with poems that speak to their suffering,” according AVBOB’s CEO, Carl van der Riet.

“The AVBOB Poetry Project continues this aim and includes the belief in ubuntu,” he said. “We believe that by enabling each person to see and know their own humanity through the humanity of others, we contribute to the healing and restoration of ourselves and our communities.”

Van der Riet also reflected on the remarkable 35% growth of entries in 2020, with 7 124 individual poets sending in a total of 41 149 poems, almost exactly double the number of poems submitted in 2017, the first year of the competition.

“In the past four years, a grand total of 121 629 poems were submitted and the online AVBOB Poetry Library now offers more than 14 000 selected poems of comfort.”

These works are freely available to the public for use at funerals and memorial services, or simply to read in moments when inspiration or consolation is needed. With 4 100 new poems added to the AVBOB Poetry Library in 2020, each poet was paid a R300 usage fee.

“This equates to an investment in South African poets of R1 230 000, and shows AVBOB’s commitment to providing consolation for those who mourn,” van der Riet said.

The annual anthology, I wish I’d said … Vol.4, which was launched at an online gala, was compiled by editor-in-chief Johann de Lange and Sesotho editor Rethabile Possa-Mogoera. It showcases the three finalists in each language category and a series of commissioned poems in each official language, including four translations of Afrikaans poems by Lynthia Julius into !Xun and Nama.

Drubango, king of the decks

By Tshifhiwa Mukwevho Rudzambilu “Drubango” Netsianda (28) had always been intrigued by the deejays on their decks - either live during festivals or on TV - to such an extent that he dreamed of one day becoming a deejay himself.

Though he may still be fresh in the industry, his presence on stage cannot be denied.

“I was always intrigued by other deejays’ excellent work and decided that if I was going to excel too, the first step for me would be to take lessons on mixing tracks,” he said. “I learnt the traits and all the basics around it from house deejay King Mshivo. I then continued to listen to music shows on the radio and many different deejays’ mixtapes, regardless of the genres.”

He started to sample songs from different genres and was happy with his development. “I wanted to master the craft of deejaying and become just as good as those before me,” he said. “I have succeeded in impressing music lovers online and I am aiming to go international.” Late one night, while on set, Drubango caught the attention of renowned musician Focalistic, who was quite impressed by his knowledge of Amapiano music, so he re-posted Drubango on social media. “Yoo! The response was massive,” he said.

Drubango has started releasing weekly digital DJ sets, known as Piano Estate, from where he plays never-heard-before Amapiano music to the online masses. His first single, What do you want, featuring Una Rine, King Mshivo and P-Tempo, was released on

“I look forward to using my talents to write a different story for my own benefit, as well as my fellow youths here in Vhembe first, and then to move on to other parts of the world,” he said.

Lavhengwa restores hope

By Tshifhiwa Mukwevho Tshifhiwa Lavhengwa aims to restore hope and inject a sense of courage into people through his poetry collection, called The Bleeding Pen. “I write poems that evoke emotions with unspoken truths,” he said. “The title of my collection refers to the bleeding emotions of wounded souls. Whenever boredom strikes, I find myself writing poems and reciting some of them on video clips, which I later share with people via various social-media platforms. I mostly don’t plan to write; it just happens and then the words come flowing nonstop.”

He says that readers might be able to relate to many of the challenges in his book regarding relationships, regrets, broken dreams and spiritual courage.

“I was touched by situations that people go through on a daily basis; unspoken words and emotions that they can’t express,” he explained. “I stand as their voice to an unsympathetic society.”

Lavhengwa, who is a first-time

published author, fell in love with writing in 2019 after he had read many religious books. He initially started writing as a way of expressing his own feelings, without any intention of ever publishing his writings.

“As I continued to write, I realised that I was able to express my feelings more aptly through poems, and that was the moment in which I decided to focus more on writing poetry,” he said. “I needed my voice to be heard by the next person, and that was when I approached Betbing Publishers.”

Lavhengwa resides at Tshivhilidulu Village. He matriculated at Vhusendeka Secondary School in 2016, obtained a food and cookery certificate from Boulevard Academy, as well as a business skills certificate from Oxbridge Academy in 2020.

Mega Venrap artists Mizo Phyll and Muledane release their latest EP

By Tshifhiwa Mukwevho Livhuwani Aubrey Ratshiungo, better known to his fans as Mizo Phyll, and Gumani “Muledane Hustler” Makungo, two local VenRap artist from the Vhembe district, are making big waves and even greater names for themselves in the music industry.

“Ziyoni refers to that peace of mind and social stability during the hard times in our lives here on earth,” Muledane Hustler explains.

Mizo Phyll is not your average VenRap singer but an established and successful rapper, songwriter and entrepreneur. The superstar from Maniini Block J in the Vhembe district has been in the music industry for more than 10 years. His single, Tshikandeledzi, was nominated as the best Tshivenda Hip-Hop Single at the South African Traditional Music Awards (SATMA) in 2009. He then went on to be the first artist to win the best Tshivenda hip-hop category with his album My African Dream at the Tshivenda Music Awards (TSHIMA) in 2012.

“I am really grateful for all these achievements,” he said. Regarded as one of the most significant artists in the Limpopo Province, Mizo Phyll is surely becoming a household name across South Africa, as well as the outside world.

“Our latest EP touches on the current spiritual welfare people are going through around the world,” he said. “It has a melodious ointment to soothe the heart with songs filled with love, hope and faith for better days to come.”

The project is largely based on Afro sounds, piano and hip-hop fusions done by the prominent producer Adroitbeatz. The EP, packed with musical delights, strikes different emotions while it takes the listener on a rare journey of musical sonics and spirituality.

Muledane Hustler, who started his music career in 2012 when he recorded and released tracks that were shared via social-media platforms, is also a truly authentic VenRap voice. In 2016, he released his debut album, called Shumela Venda, which was well received in Vhembe. “I am a musician

at heart. I speak the language of music wherever I go,” he said.

“It is safe to say that this exploration of different sounds from me and Mizo Phyll definitely brought out so much versatility and style from what we are normally known for in our approach of music,” Muledane Hustler said.

Nkuna plays the rhumba-rhythm

By Tshifhiwa Mukwevho The latest offering from Walter Nkuna and Udozadoza Express provides an electrifying experience, particularly for fans of the rhumba-rhythm.

The album, titled Vhutshilo-de, was released last month and the tracks already prove to be anthems in the rhumba/sungura/chingondo genre. Nkuna is a resident at Mpheni Village in the Vhembe District.

Over time, his music has matured like a good wine. “I believe this is the album my fans have been waiting for, and I look forward to winning over even more music lovers with my music,” he said.

The album has re-ignited the spark of performing sungura music on stage and has earned him the name of “prince of sungura”.

The track Mpfareleni (forgive me) relates the story of a man who had wronged his wife and the mother of his children. “In this song, the man admits that he was wrong and requests to be forgiven,” Nkuna explained. “He recalls how he has always found joy and happiness in his wife and children. Well, I am only showing through this song that respect and peace are paramount in a long-lasting relationship and upholding one’s family.”

“Dhewa is my godfather,” he said. “Musically speaking, I am intrigued by his guitar skills and techniques and his songs are laden with positive messages of life. There are slight elements of Dhewa’s guitar found in some of my songs.”

Phalaphala FM hands over food hampers to two drop-in centres The Tshiheni Drop-In Centre and Mbahe Drop-In Centre were overcome with gratitude when the Phalaphala FM team showed up on their doorstep with food hampers worth R67 000 in total on Friday, 20 August.

The two non-profit organisations were nominated by Phalaphala FM listeners during the station’s Rina Ndavha (We Care) Campaign, launched in July 2021 to commemorate the 67 minutes in memory of the late President Nelson Mandela.

Listeners were requested to call in or send voice notes via WhatsApp, stating which organisation they felt deserved to receive their share of the food hampers.

“We thank Phalaphala FM for their generous donation, which will help our organisation tremendously,” said Ms Azwifaneli Ramananzhe from Tshiheni Drop-In Centre. “We are very happy!”

Ms Thinavhuyo Constance Magoba, manager at Mbahe Drop-In Centre, also expressed her sincere thanks for the hampers they received. “I thank Phalaphala FM for the food hampers delivered to us today. These hampers will greatly help us to provide for the children who come to the drop-in centre after school,” she said.

One of the beneficiaries at Mbahe DropIn Centre, Ms Khathutshelo Neluvhumbu, was overjoyed. “It is not every day that we come (to the drop-in centre) and leave with a full stomach. Thank you, Phalaphala FM, for this donation.”

Ms Sharon Ravele, Phalaphala FM’s programme manager, said that the Rina Ndavha Campaign was aimed at making a real difference in the lives of people who benefitted from orphanages and drop-in centres, and the hampers were a token of appreciation to the caregivers at these centres.

Sixth album for Mazwale

By Tshifhiwa Mukwevho Tshanduko Maano, better known on stage as Mazwale, released her sixth album, called Vhudobadoba.

The album, containing eight tracks, is already in high demand locally and expected to do well commercially too.

Mazwale said that she was very happy with her latest release.

A resident of Mapate, Mazwale’s journey to stardom started many years ago while she was still in primary school at Mapate village. “My voice stood out both at Sunday school and at community gatherings, and I later became the lead vocalist at our local church. I always found myself leading and everyone kept on talking about the little girl with the ‘sweet voice’, and the rest is history.”

Her first album, Ndinne uno, was released in 2014, with the hit praise song Ndwinwana wanga and title track, Ndinne uno, which was very popular among the fans. In 2015, she released her second album, Usapfa hutunya mavhudzi, followed by Vhuhadzi ndinama ya thole in 2018, Tshitoko in 2019 and Usivhone bere ukhanya in 2020.

This talented musician, who holds a diploma in sound engineering from Damelin College, won the Best Tshivenda Award during the 2016/7 South African Traditional Music Awards (Satma) ceremony. She also won a Tshivenda Music Awards (Tshima).

Though the new album as a whole seems to be doing well already, Corona, Ma 200, Ariye Munatini and Tsinga ndedede appear to be enjoying special favour with the fans.

Mazwale admits to having a personal love for House music and said she was really just trying her luck with this latest album.

“I was ecstatic to learn that this has been my best offering yet. I am truly moved by the massive airplay the album is receiving on national and regional radio stations at the moment. Everyone who listens to it is just in awe of the composition in general, and for that I am grateful,” she said.

For Mazwale, the most important thing about her new album is that she remained true to herself and who she is when she did the recording. “I didn’t want to imitate anybody and that is why the album is so outstanding, unique and soothing to the listeners’ ears.”

She encouraged young people to realise the importance of education, and to put that first.

“People change through life, and it worries me that so many of the children in the Vhembe area abuse alcohol and drugs. I would very much like to see people get together and address these burning issues, so that they can stop,” she said.

“Managing family life and running a business are not easy, but I make sure that I do what makes me happy,” she said. “I was thinking of providing some training to poor rural women who also wish to make Tshivenda traditional clothes.”

When asked what advice she had for other women, she replied: “Stand up and take charge of your lives. It’s high time we took back control.

Don’t depend on a man.”

To Mudimeli, happiness come first in her life, despite the challenges she sometimes faces. She has emerged as the toast of Vhembe because of her creativity. Mudimeli provides top-class service to her clients and prefers to use the indigenous Vhavenda, Bapedi and Tsonga fabrics as a means of showcasing their heritage to the world.

“If you are a rural woman and still believe that a woman’s place is in the kitchen, and wait for your husband to bring food home, you are mistaken.

The latest trend is to help the government by creating your own job and being your own boss,” she said.

Disgruntled ANC members march for verification of membership

By Silas Nduvheni A group of about 50 disgruntled ANC members from Ward 19 in the Thulamela Municipality appear to be fed-up with the local ward councillor, Ms Fhulufhelo Mutheiwana, accusing her of not running the ward’s branch executive committee meeting fairly.

“We are concerned about our membership verification list in Ward 19, as some ANC members who are not considered her ‘friends’ are not on the list. We don’t want her (Mutheiwana) to call a general meeting without first solving the problem concerning the branch,” said Ms Livhuwani Ramuhovhi.

According to Ramuhovhi, they had been reliably informed that Mutheiwana, who has worked for two terms now, intended to contest for a third term. “We cannot allow her to do so, as there are some good standing candidates for the seat of councillor,” she said.

“We know that the ANC is the ruling party. If they need peace and stability within its meetings, they can use the SAPS, rather than invite some private security companies. We need ANC Vhembe’s general secretary, Advocate Anderson Mudunungu, to address our concerns,” Ramuhovhi added.

Ramuhovhi was joined by other members who protested in front the offices of the ANC Vhembe’s regional offices in Thohoyandou on Thursday, 19

August, where they presented a memorandum of their concerns.

Ward 19 was also renamed TT Musetsho branch, after the South African Municipal Workers Union (SAMWU) member in the Vhembe District, Timson Musetsho Tshimangadzo, who was murdered in 2019. One of the worried members, Livhuwani Ramuhovhi, said they were worried that they too might be killed like Musetsho in their fight.

Ms Mudzhadzi Ramufhi, an administrator at the ANC Women’s League office in Thohoyandou, received the memorandum on behalf of Advocate Mudunungu and promised to deliver the memorandum to Mudunungu, who will reply.

Suspect in SAMWU murders lied about his history, court told

By Silas Nduvheni Percy Radzuma, one of the four men accused of the murders on SAMWU members, was denied bail by Magistrate Rendani Netshiunda at the Thohoyandou Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, 19 August.

Percy, his two brothers, Simon and Ndivhuwo Radzuma, and Thabo Sibanze stand accused of the murder of SAMWU officials, Mr Ronald Mani (50) and the union’s former acting national president, Mr Timpson Musetsho (50), in 2019. Both men spoke out about municipalities in the Vhembe District that had

invested millions of rands of public funds in the now-liquidated VBS Mutual Bank. The suspects were also linked to other criminal cases that the police had been investigating over the years.

Percy was the only one of the four suspects who applied for bail on 10 August. His application, however, was rejected because he told the court that he was a businessman and taxi owner, which proved to be untrue. He also failed to mention that he has a criminal record for previous offenses, which had only been revealed through extensive police investigations.

The State Prosecutor in the Thohoyandou Magistrate’s Court, Ms Mashudu Nekhumbe, said the state challenged all arguments stated in court by the suspect’s legal representative, Advocate Thihangwi Nelufule. According to Nekhumbe, the state has a strong case against the suspect.

Limpopo police detective Captain Tshinyadzo Ndou told the court under oath that the suspect (Percy Radzuma) had shown him seven places where he and his two brothers had hijacked and taken vehicles during robberies around Thohoyandou.

Captain Ndou also told the court that the younger brother, Simon, had shown them where he and his co-accused had killed the two SAMWU officials. Simon told the police detective that he was the one who had shot and killed Mani, while Musetsho had been shot and killed by his brother, Percy.

“We understand that communities outside are angry about the brutal killings of their relatives and are baying for the suspect’s blood if released on bail. We have not yet completed our police investigations. The suspect might intimidate the witnesses and there is the possibility that even more suspects might be arrested regarding the killings of the two SAMWU members,” added Captain Ndou.

This mother of one is currently in her first year of studying towards a Bachelor of Education, Senior Phase and FET degree through UNISA, with the help of a bursary awarded by Soutpan Solar Power (Vivo).

“I would love to work at an agricultural school and motivate today’s younger generation to value agriculture as a foundation in their lives. It would also make me happy to know I have impacted and motivated a young person’s life in the agriculture area.

Once Keneilwe has completed her Bachelor of Education degree, she will have two degrees, the first being a Bachelor of Arts in communications from NorthWest University, which she completed in 2016.

The school, however, is starting to fall apart and, after years of neglect, is no longer a showcase for anything. The school now has six usable classrooms, but they are in very poor condition.

Besides being located on top of the mountain, the school is also faced with serious infrastructure and sanitation challenges. The building is in a state of decay, with paint peeling off the walls. The floors in the classrooms are damaged, leaving learners to attend classes in a dusty environment. In addition to the building’s poor condition, learners still use pit latrines.

The issue of pit toilets in use at Limpopo schools is a very sensitive one. Section 27, a public-interest law centre that advocates for access to healthcare services and basic education, has been in and out of court with the Department of Education in Limpopo, demanding that pit toilets be eradicated completely.

In 2014, five-year-old Michael Komape drowned after he fell into a pit toilet at his school in Limpopo. The Supreme Court (SCA) of Appeal in Bloemfontein ordered that the family of Michael Komape be paid more than R1 million for emotional shock and grief.

The deputy chairperson of Vhusendeka Secondary’s school governing body (SGB), Mr Naledzani Mugali, said the SGB was tired of watching children climb a mountain every day to get to the dilapidated school.

“We want a new school in a new location. The school is too far on top of the mountains and

the area is bushy. It is not safe for our children to go to school.

We want improvement in the school; we don’t have computer labs and other basic learning materials,” Mugali said and added that they also wanted proper toilets.

The Department of Education Limpopo’s spokesperson,

Tidimalo Chuene, said that Vhembe West’s district infrastructure official would visit the school to conduct an assessment of the current infrastructure. “Possible interventions will then be determined, based on the assessment report, and presented to stakeholders for buy-in,” she said.

Conversations in a morning taxi

by Maanda Bele The early-morning taxis are known to host the best debates, dissecting everything from crime to politics and religion. During this rush-hour period, passengers seem to still have clear minds and strong opinions.

On Monday morning I boarded a taxi to Louis Trichardt at Dopeni village. The taxi was using the picturesque Witvlag route. Despite its being a cold morning, the taxi was half full. Initially everyone was quiet, listening to the 07:00 news bulletin on Phalaphala FM. The news anchor was talking about an incident at Tshamulungwi, where a 19-year-old matric learner from Phophi Secondary in Tshamulungwi village outside Thohoyandou had been arrested for allegedly raping a 13-year-old Grade 8 learner.

Before the news anchor could finish the story, the comments started flowing. A lady who was sitting in the first seat behind the driver ignited the debate. “Axaaah. What is a 19- year-old still doing in high school? He is waiting for young children, so that he can take advantage of them,” she

said out loud.

“He must just stay at home and marry his wife. Our kids are not safe with him around,” she said while looking at a lady next to her, who seemed to be her friend or someone she knows. “This girl is the same age as our girls,” she added.

A lady wearing a blue and white uniform seemed to agree with her. The lady looked like a nurse who had just knocked off from a tiring night shift.

“His peers are at university.

Maybe he is just failing on purpose, so that he can continue to harass young girls,” she said.

A gentleman who was sitting in front of me did not seem to agree with the two ladies. “The news anchor said the two were in a relationship.

It means they had an agreement,” he said.

He then proceeded to give a lesson in South African Law, which proclaims that a child is legally defined as a person under the age of 18 years. The age of consent is 16 years, regardless of gender and sexual orientation.

“This, however, does come with exceptions. Firstly, if the children engaging in sexual acts together are between the

ages 12 and 16, they will not be criminally charged; and it is not criminal for a child older than 12 years to have sex with a partner who is less than two years older than they are,” he explained.

He seemed to be quite knowledgeable, explaining that the law also states that no child under the age of 12 years can consent to sex. Any sexual act with a child under the age of 12 years is statutory rape or sexual assault.

Unfortunately, the lady who started the topic had reached her destination, but before she got off, she advised the gentleman to think like a parent.

The law may state what goes for what in an idealistic world, but the country is often far removed from such a world.

In the background, the radio station continued with the conversation. The girl has allegedly been removed from school after she had tried to commit suicide twice because of the incident. Her rapist, boyfriend or former boyfriend, whatever he may be, remains in jail. The law did not protect her, but perhaps a strong sentence will protect others in a similar situation.

Ramulifho, who resides at Nngwekhulu Tshilata Village, started the foundation in March 2020 after she realised that the young people in her village had no space or places for interactive recreation to keep their minds stimulated – which plays such an essential role in a healthy upbringing.

The foundation comprises five committee members, and at least 60 children are attached to it as well.

“We also put children on after-class programmes, which include activities like tshikona, tshigombela, vhurendi, Sarafina, majorette, drama, gumboot dancing, and modelling,” she said. “Furthermore, we help them with homework.”

The MEC for Transport and Community Safety, Mavhungu Lerule Ramakhanya, led by example last Thursday (19th) when she arrived at the Makhado Show Grounds to receive her Johnson & Johnson vaccination. Ramakhanya remarked that the queues at the vaccination centres were considerably shorter than a couple of weeks ago. She encouraged people to rather register prior to coming for their jabs, as this will speed up the vaccination process.

Speaking about undocumented immigrants, Ramakhanya said: “We encourage everyone in the country to get vaccinated. Some of the undocumented people might be working, so their employers should assist these people to complete an affidavit at the police station.

Then they can take the affidavit to the vaccination centre.” Ramakhanya said she appreciated the work done by the Department of Health, going into the rural areas and debunking Covid-19 myths. “When one gets vaccinated, the frontline workers will educate everyone who gets jabbed on how to conduct themselves a few days after receiving their jabs.”

By Bernard Chiguvare “We sometimes discriminate against or ignore children who roam the streets unaccompanied by a parent or guardian in search of food or clothes. Take some time to consider what really caused these children to leave their homes,” said Musina resident Ornica Netshiozwi.

Netshiozwi is on a mission to extend a helping hand to some 18 minors, housed at a shelter in Musina. She makes blankets from wool. “It is wintertime, and I would like to make their nights enjoyable by donating a woollen blanket to each of these children,” said Netshiozwi.

The blankets she makes are actually for sale, but she felt that making a contribution to the lives of these poor orphans in Musina was something worthwhile.

Netshiozwi’s dream coincided well with Child Protection Week (CPW), launched by the Minister of Social Development, Ms Lindiwe Zulu, on 30 May this year.

CPW forms part of the government’s efforts to raise awareness and mobilise communities to protect children from abuse, neglect, exploitation, ill-treatment and other forms of violence.

Netshiozwi started to buy wool out of her own pocket, but soon realised that the cost was more than she could afford. That was when she decided to go around to raise the funds needed for her project.

Although she, with the help

of other volunteers, managed to make the blankets by June, they were prevented from making the donation because of the lockdown restrictions.

On Saturday, 21 August, she finally got an opportunity to hand the blankets over to the initial 18 vulnerable people at the shelter, with an additional child among them.

“I never thought I would ever come across three- and six-year-olds living in a shelter.

I have more questions than answers. How did they end up in South Africa? Who brought them here? What were they feeding on all along on their way to South Africa?” the

mother in Netshiozwi kept asking herself, and vowed to include these little ones in her monthly budget. “I really feel I have to do this; some of them wore torn dresses. It just breaks my heart!” she said with tears in her eyes.

Jacob Matakanye, one of the board members of the Nancefield and Matswale shelters, conveyed his appreciation for this generous donation.

“We laid the foundation (by establishing a shelter for the homeless) for these vulnerable people and appreciate any donations that will assist us in looking after the children,” he said.

Mates give Dynamos a Sunday to remember

By Kaizer Nengovhela Tshiozwi Mates were by far too strong for Tshiozwi Dynamos when they overpowered them 4-1 in their Joe Chamala soccer tournament match that was played at Tshiozwi on Sunday.

The game was a one-way flow of traffic from the onset, with Mates dictating the terms. Mates took the lead in the 14th minute. Their striker, Vhutshilo Mafunisa, was on target after receiving a neat pass from Dakalo Raphetha.

Dynamos lost cohesion in the middle of the park shortly after Mates’ first goal. They were severely punished for that. Mates capitalised on the setback and pressed hard in search of more goals. The struggle continued, with Mates enjoying more possession. They

were leading 1-0 when the referee blew the half-time whistle.

Mates’ second goal was scored

This is the second year that Khoroni are assisting Tonic’s foundation. The kit includes shirts, pants and socks to the value of R17 000 for 30 players, aged between 15 and 17 years.

After collecting the maximum league points away from home last weekend, Lacoste Morning Stars will be on the road again this weekend. TTM believe they have what it takes to win the league

By Frank Mavhungu Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila (TTM) are still in celebratory mood. The team started the new season with a bang with a 3-1 victory over Cape Town All Stars at the Thohoyandou Stadium last Saturday. Vhadau Vha Damani, as they are affectionately called, are shining on top of the GladAfrica Championship League log after the victory.

Asked what the victory meant to the TTM family, the club’s interim spokesperson, Mr Livhuwani Mad-

zuhe, stated that the win was a step in the right direction. He stressed the fact that celebrating too soon was premature. Mr Madzuhe said that the road to the league championship was still long, adding that they still had 29 matches to play before the end of the season.

He said that their aim was to maintain the team’s current form until the end of the season. He added that he was convinced that nothing would stop them from gaining automatic promotion to the DStv Premiership Division with the current squad, come end of the season. TTM had added several

quality players to the ones who agreed to relocate with the team when Mr Masala Mulaudzi bought the club’s GladAfrica Championship franchise from Royal AM about two weeks ago.

Some of the new players who joined the Tshakhuma side last week include Rhulani Manzini, Pentjie Zulu, Naeem Amojee and Ernot Dzaga.
