Despite calls for people to remain calm as supermarkets will remain open for the lockdown period, people still panicked. By Wednesday afternoon, queues of people has already formed outside all major retail stores and supermarkets in Louis Trichardt in a spate of panic buying. This was the scene at Game.

are running low on, like meat and long-life milk. Everybody is stocking up and I suspect that from Wednesday it will become busier. But we will also remain open and keep our shelves stocked, but somehow people don’t realize this or don’t know what is going on. Our trucks are going to continue to do deliveries daily. People do not need to worry,” said Lotter on Tuesday morning. By that time, his sales were almost 30 to 40% up from normal levels. Although “essential” institutions such as grocery shops and other food suppliers, medical facilities, and fuel stations, among others, will be allowed to remain open, others are not so lucky and are forced to close for the whole of the lockdown period. Especially hard hit is the restaurant and hospitality industry. With no income generated and with bills to pay, what remains to
be seen is how many such local businesses will “survive” the lockdown. As an example, hundreds of casual workers in the local hospitality and restaurant industry, such as waiters, will not receive any pay for the next three weeks as they are working on the “no-work-no-pay” principle. For Mr Dennis Schnehage, owner of the Grasdak and Mountain Inn Hotel, news of having to shut down totally during the lockdown period comes after a week or so of an already dwindling income. “Yes, there was a definite decline in numbers, both overnight and restaurant cancellations. We thought to concentrate on take-aways, but now that won’t work,” said Schnehage. Also being forced to shut down was the popular Mike’s Kitchen in the Makhado Crossing Mall. (Contd on P2)

Daarom moes God se voorskrifte noukeurig uitgevoer word.
Hulle moes die lam sorgvuldig uitkies. “‘n Lam sonder gebrek ( Exodus 12:5)”. Petrus voeg by “vlekkeloos” (1 Petrus 1:19). Daarna, as dit sonder gebrek was, kon dit geslag word .

In the other front-page article, police urged people to help them find Mr Brandon Hewitz, alias Abel Hlungwane (26), who lived at Mbhokota Village and who went missing on 28 November the previous year. He was last seen in Elim. According to rumours doing the rounds, Mr Hewitz had been murdered and his body mutilated, but no evidence of this could be found. At the same time, the police were looking for another Elim resident who went missing, the 33-year-old Mr Paul Gezani Nahluali. He was last seen on 17 December the previous year.
afgevuur is.
With all liquor stores being forced to close for the whole lockdown period, a lot of panic buying took place at these outlets since Monday. By early Tuesday morning, some items such as Jameson Whiskey were already sold out at Tops at Soutpansberg Spar. Other brands were also flying off the shelves fast.

gloves will help combat the spread of the disease, you are mistaken. All that you are doing when wearing gloves is not washing your hands. You literally spread the disease more easily by wearing gloves because you are not washing your hands. In the meantime, you are touching everything and getting into contact with other people,” said De Lange. Regarding the above, Stroebel stressed once again the importance of washing your hands regularly with normal soap. “Most people in rural areas can’t afford expensive hand sanitizer. Normal soap works just as well, if not better. Soap literally breaks down the virus. The more you wash, the more quickly you break it down,” said Stroebel. “Anyway, most people getting sprayed with hand sanitizer at entrance doors don’t use it correctly. Rubbing your hands together for a few seconds does not help. You literally have to rub the sanitizer in between your fingers as well as the back of your hands for at least 20 seconds,” added De Lange. Stroebel said that now was not the time to

panic, adding that the health-care sector, from local to government level, was working hard behind the scenes and acting pro-actively. “We are all taking the situation seriously. If this virus starts spreading in our villages, we will struggle to contain it. That is the main reason the total lockdown was called for,” said Stroebel. To help slow down the spread of the virus, both Stroebel and De Lange urged people to adhere to the call for total isolation during the lockdown period. “With the lockdown, the most important thing people should remember is social distancing. A metre, metre-and-a-half to two metres between people. If a person is sick, definitely at least two metres. Do not touch, do not do the feet thing and do not do the elbow thing. You or the other person might have just coughed in your or their own elbow,” said Stroebel. “I recently heard a saying that goes: ‘Stop fearing the virus but start fearing to spread it’. This is the message to people: Stop giving the virus lungs to multiply, since it can only connect and multiply in your lungs,” concluded De Lange.
With the country going into total lockdown to slow the spread of the coronavirus, the Zoutpansberg Private Hospital has introduced additional safety measures at the hospital. The main entrance is now the only entrance to the hospital for everybody, including staff. All visitors and staff are also now screened in a screening area for possible infection before being allowed to enter.

Soutpansberg Spar & Louis Trichardt Superspar COVID-19 Update Dear Community & Valued Customers As you will likely be aware President Ramaphosa announced on Monday (23 March 2020) that South Africa has moved to lock down status in order to flatten the curve of COVID-19. We ask you to please comply with store signage and staff direction to maintain the physical distancing.
Avoid panic buying as it may lead to over-indebtedness warns NCR Consumer News Many South Africans are overwhelmed, living in fear and anxiety because of the rapid escalation of the COVID-19 (coronavirus) which presents an unprecedented threat to South Africa and the world at large. In recent times, we have seen many consumers resorting to panic buying of essential items as the fear of the coronavirus spreads. “The National Credit Regulator (NCR) has encourages consumers to exercise caution and restraint when spending in this difficult peri-
od,” said Nomsa Motshegare, Chief Executive Officer of the NCR in a press release. The NCR urged consumers to make responsible financial decisions. “Buying under panic and anxiety has the potential for consumers to buy things they do not need and cannot afford. For some consumers to acquire these items, they resort to using credit and this could be detrimental to their overall financial health. It is important for consumers to remember that credit comes at a cost and that the credit acquired has to be repaid,” advised Motshegare. Ms Motshegare further
advises consumers who may be feeling financially distressed due to the impact of this pandemic to be proactive in addressing their finances and debt. “Consumers are advised not to ignore their debts, but to contact their credit providers. Consumers can approach a debt counsellor for further assistance if over-indebted,” said Motshegare. In light of the recent decrease of the interest rate, Motshegare said that consumers should not increase their spending but rather use this opportunity to decrease their current debt and save for emergencies.

Agri SA says drastic times call for drastic measures in South Africa Agricultural News Agri SA has welcomed the drastic measures President Cyril Ramaphosa announced to the nation regarding the mitigation activities related to COVID-19 and the spread of the disease in South Africa. “We have to flatten the curve
to stop a large-scale catastrophe in South Africa,” said Omri van Zyl, Agri SA’s executive director in a press release. The 21-day lockdown will have an undeniably massive impact on the economy, but it remains imperative that essential services remain intact. According to Van Zyl, agriculture is
one of these and the production of food and food supplies must ensure that they keep the food security status intact and that they nourish the people. “The farmers of South Africa will support our people and our country in these times of need and turbulence,” said Pierre Vercueil, Agri SA’s president.

Members of the Department of Defence who work at Air Force Base (AFB) Makhado as defence civilians recently successfully completed their five-day Foundation Management Development Programme (FMDP). Photo: AFB Makhado.
Base’s DOD members empowered AFB Makhado Thirty-three members of the Department of Defence who work at Air Force Base (AFB) Makhado as defence civilians successfully completed their five-day Foundation Management Development Programme (FMDP) aimed at empowering skills and knowledge to better themselves both at work and home. The programme was conducted at Kone Village (Sinthumule) from 24 to 28 February. Speaking during the award ceremony that marked the end of the programme, the acting General Officer Commanding of AFB Makhado, Col Lance Mathebula, thanked the facilitators (Ms Mahlawe Nomaxabiso and Mr Wilson Majebele from the National School of Government) for their genuine contribution to support the Department of Defence, in
particular AFB Makhado, by ensuring that skills and knowledge were imparted to members of the base for their future benefit. He also congratulated and thanked all 33 learners for their participation and commitment during the programme. Nomaxabiso expressed her gratitude to the Officer Commanding of AFB Makhado, Brig Gen André Barends (in absentia) who officially opened the programme, and for allowing them to come and present lectures to members of the base. In addition, she said that she not only had to teach but also to learn from them. ‘‘Learners made learning easier and enjoyable throughout the programme by giving their best cooperation during the class. They loved their work and were always willing to go the extra mile. A change in the mood was felt all the time and that alone was fundamentally important.
They had a sense of belonging,” she said. Nomaxabiso added that through this leadership skills and training programme, learners were expected to improve efficiency and become better supervisors and managers, both at work and within their respective communities. Some of the lectures offered were based on communication skills, decision-making skills, conflict-management skills, knowledge about the command chain, structure of the Department of Defence, mission, vision and key values of the organisation. Majebele said that this was not the first time for the National School of Government to offer lectures to the Department of Defence. ‘ ’The only time for the organization to measure success and improvement of its members will be during the quarterly assessment period,” he said.

These new “owners” have also put up fences around the sites and lately, businesses such as hardware stores have appeared. Mr David Baloyi, chairperson of the Mavhungeni CPA, said that they were very frustrated with the Department of Rural Development and Land Reform’s reluctance to act in this matter. “We cannot do anything because of the problems with Xikopokopo,” said Baloyi. Baloyi accused the Xikopokopo group of unilaterally demarcating land for themselves. “As the African proverb says: ‘When two brothers fight, strangers reap the harvest’,” he added. Baloyi said that beneficiaries often fought, and powerful leaders within the CPAs, or chiefs, exercised their influence, hoarded resources and reaped the benefits while ordinary people were excluded. Two weeks ago, the annual general meeting of the Mavhungeni CPA was held at Mbhokota. “Mr Samuel Shirinda sent a group of young of people, who were drunk at the time, to disrupt and end the meeting,” said Baloyi. The matter may be heading to court. According to Baloyi, they were issued with court papers by Shirinda, but when they went to court, Shirinda “found an excuse not to avail himself ”. During an interview with Samuel Shirinda, he denied that he was selling stands to people from outside the CPA. He said that he was demarcating stands for qualifying beneficiaries. Shirinda said that the original executive members of the Mavhungeni CPA were all dead and the CPA was left with only one member, who had resigned in 2006. He said that a group calling themselves the Mavhungeni CPA were refusing to work with the community. According to him, this group had leased a portion of the farm to a commercial farmer, Mr Carl Henning of Munuzwu. Shirinda said the Xikopokopo Community Farming group did not agree with the lease. He also accused the Mavhungeni members of only benefiting themselves. Shirinda denied that he and his group had sent young people to disturb the annual general meeting held at Mbhokota. He said that they had been invited by the Department of Rural Development and Land Reform to the meeting because the people attending the meeting did not constitute a quorum. By Kaizer Nengovhela

72 clinics without running water amid virus threat By Bernard Chiguvare The Public Service Association (PSA) and the Democratic Nursing Organisation of South Africa (DENOSA) expressed concern about the health of clinic staff and patients at some of the clinics in the province. According to DENOSA, 72 clinics in the province are without running water and are experiencing a shortage of personal protective equipment. DENOSA said that, especially in light of the COVID-19 threat, a severe shortage of gloves, face masks, hand sanitisers and clean running water existed. Last week, Zoutpansberger visited the Makhado Clinic to gain first-hand experience of the conditions awaiting staff and patients. As is standard practice, patients first had to complete a booking form before proceeding to the waiting area. The security guard manning the entrance did not wear protective clothing. No one sprayed disinfectant on the hands of visitors or disinfected the area where the patients were waiting either. After people had been waiting for a while, a nurse approached, requesting the clinic cards of patients. The nurse did not wear any protective clothing, such as a face mask. In one of the rooms meant for HIV/Aids counselling, a counsellor was wearing gloves and a transparent apron but also had no face mask. The public toilet was functioning well and running water was available from taps. The situation at the Makhado Clinic seems to be better than at many of the other clinics in the region. John Teffo, PSA Limpopo’s provincial manager, said that at Davhana clinic no running water had been available since November last year. This, he said, was compromising the health
15
of employees and patients. Teffo further said that nothing was in place at the clinic as a precautionary measure to prevent people from being infected by the coronavirus. Speaking to Zoutpansberger on condition of anonymity, a nurse working at the clinic said: “The situation at this clinic is very bad. A mother who has delivered needs to clean herself and feed the new-born baby, but the taps are dry. As a nurse, I have to fetch water by using a bucket for the mother.” The nurse said a machine that pumped water to the clinic had broken last year. The municipality delivers water to the hospital for storage in a tank at the clinic. Nurses have to fetch water from the tank, using buckets. Zoutpansberger was also informed that the toilets for outpatients were not cleaned because of the shortage of water. Teffo said the nurses had raised the issue with the clinic management several times, but nothing had changed. “Employees must work in conditions that are not conducive to a healthy and safe environment, as required by the Occupational Health and Safety Act. It must be noted that the lack of water creates an opportunity for infection. The patients, particularly new-borns and their mothers, can leave the clinic with diseases due to poor infection control, and this The Davhana clinic in Vuwani has been operating without running water since November last can also create problems for nurses who can be year. attacked by the communities,” said Teffo. Kenny Mathivha, spokesperson for the Limpopo Premier, said last week that the procurement of protective equipment was in process. The Limpopo Department of Health referred all questions to the water authority, the Vhembe District Municipality. Vhembe municipality’s spokesperson did not respond to questions sent via Whatsapp.

Limpopo MEC for health Dr Phophi Ramathuba.
Provincial News Limpopo Health MEC Dr Phophi Ramathuba has called for calm after Health Minister Dr Zweli Mkhize announced three more confirmed cases of the coronavirus in Limpopo. The number brings the confirmed cases in the province to four. The three new cases are South African citizens from the Western Cape who travelled to several high-risk countries in Europe earlier this month. Upon return last week, the family of three (husband, wife
and child) decided to subject themselves to self-quarantine in a private farm lodge in Lephalale, an action that is commended by the MEC. The three have assured authorities that they have made no contact from the airport to the farm since they used their private vehicle and no workers were on the farm. All of them are asymptomatic but they tested voluntarily because they came from high-risk countries. Ramathuba said in a press release on Monday that a team from her department would monitor the three until
they were cleared. The three will not be admitted to hospital since they are not sick. MEC Ramathuba has further reiterated her call to limit movements between provinces to arrest the spread of the virus. “As the numbers continue to increase, the risk of travellers spreading the virus to other areas within the country is also increasing, which might make it difficult to contain the virus. For us as a country to achieve a flat curve, we must discourage movements and call on people to remain wherever they are,” said Ramathuba.

Alles was egter in goeie gees gewees.
Foto verskaf.
