DON’T PANIC! An open letter to our readers

We are on the brink of a total lockdown. From midnight on Thursday, 26 March, stringent measures are in place to ensure that all citizens stay indoors, not mingle and, hopefully, stop the spreading of the dreaded coronavirus.

Never before in our lifetime has a disease caused such disruption, fear, panic and compassion in countries throughout the world. Our region has not been spared, and we are gradually coming to grips with terms such as social distancing and quarantine.

What our government is doing now may be difficult to accept and understand by many of us. This step is brutal, and it

will destroy thousands of businesses, it will leave hundreds of thousands of workers without an income and it will cause disruptions such as we have never experienced before.

But it is necessary.

We fully support President Ramaphosa and his team’s efforts to curb the COVID-19 disease. We do not expect them to be perfect and get everything right. Perhaps the efforts are in vain. Perhaps we can do nothing to stop the virus from spreading and killing thousands of people. But we have to unite, and we have to fight to protect our people. In this instance it means giving the government our full support,

not because we are afraid of being prosecuted, but because we believe this is the right thing to do.

For the next three weeks, at least, please isolate! If you need to buy essential goods, do so in a responsible manner. Go beyond what is legally expected. Take responsibility for your own health, but, more importantly, for the others around you, which include the elderly and the frail.

Above all, do not panic.

The term “business as usual” does not currently apply for stall owners and people who own bakkies for hire in Kruger street in Louis Trichardt’s CBD. The drastic measures instituted by the government to curb the Covid-19 disease has already had devastating effects on their livelihood.

Following Monday’s announcement of a total lockdown, the informal sector noted that fewer people are visiting their businesses.

Speaking to Limpopo Mirror, Rudzani Ramufhi, who owns a bakkie for hire, said: “I am really in trouble as from Monday. I come here every day, but on average per day I only get R250, which is half of what I used to get when business was running well. I use the R250 for fuel and food. There is nothing I can do because this is my only way of putting food on the table. I drive here every day, anticipating that I may get more customers.”

Ramufhi lives in Sinthumule, some 15 km from Louis Trichardt.

He feels the president should have made a temporary provision for small businesses like his. “Yes, this has been declared a national state

of disaster, but the president should have made a provision of R2 000 for the days people’s movement is restricted. The president, ministers and member of parliament are paid for these days, so what about us in such industries? How do we then put food on the table?” asked Ramufhi.

Justice Baloyi from Tshikota township, a couple of kilometres away from town, said that, as from Monday, most of his regular customers were not visiting his stall for food. “In all the years that I have been selling pap and beef, this is my worst period. On average per day, when it is business as usual, I take home R800, but as from Monday, business has gone down to R500.

Not many people are coming to town and this has affected me very much,” said Baloyi.

Vincent Ramasla, a taxi rank marshal, said even though business was down, they were more worried about not being able to get protective clothing.

On Monday night, President Ramaphosa said that a safety net was being developed to support persons in the informal sector and details would be communicated during the lockdown period.

Univen produces hand sanitiser, disinfectant The School of Mathematical and Natural Sciences of the University of Venda has recently produced hand sanitiser and a surface disinfectant as a way to curb the spreading of the coronavirus.

According to a media statement by the university, they had put together a hygiene team made up of staff and students from four departments to come up with a response to mitigate the effects of the coronavirus. The team is made up

of members from the departments of microbiology, chemistry, biochemistry and botany. So far, hand sanitiser and disinfectant have been produced and more volumes are anticipated.

Prof Natasha Potgieter, dean of the School of Mathematical and Natural Sciences, said that the university management saw a need to produce these sanitisers internally for the benefit of the staff and students and to minimize the exposure of the university community to the coronavirus. She stated that the School of Mathematical and Natural Sciences had the expertise, and both the staff and postgraduate students were eager to get involved in this project and wanted to do their part in combatting the spread of the virus.

She said it was important that

people become aware of their behaviour and be pro-active by always carrying the hand sanitiser with them and using it as often as possible after visiting the bathroom, touching door handles, money and any other object that might be touched or handled by several people.

The hand sanitiser is made from ethanol, glycerol and essential oils, sourced from different plants, to keep hands moisturised while disinfecting them. The surface disinfectant is a diluted hypochlorite solution and is used to disinfect all windows and working surfaces.

The university is in the process of looking at making these products available to the community at a reasonable price, together with proper hygiene-education brochures as part of its community-engagement activities and social responsibility.

Emotional funeral for slain officer Stanley Mudau

The Deputy Minister of Police, Mr Cassel Mathale, described W/O Thinandavha Stanley Mudau (53) as man of bravery, loyalty and sacrifice, who dedicated his life to the protection of people’s safety.

“We have to salute and honour men and women in blue such as W/O Mudau, who died in the line of duty and served as an example that he was dedicated to protecting the life of people. Part of society does not show appreciation for our police officers, thinking that the safety, security and freedom they enjoy are free, but they must know that these things are not free. We are free because of men and women such as W/O Mudau and many others who have passed away in the line of duty,” said Mathale.

He was speaking on Saturday in Thohoyandou P East during the funeral proceedings of W/O Mudau, who was hacked to death on Sunday morning a fortnight ago while trying to arrest a rape suspect. He was killed instantly.

The acting deputy provincial commissioner-crime detective, Brigadier Jacob Ramokolo, said they were working hard around the clock, promising that the suspect would be arrested as soon as possible.

Thulamela will still be operational

By Silas Nduvheni With the announcement by Pres Cyril Ramaphosa on Monday evening about the nationwide lockdown, the mayor of Thulamela local municipality, Cllr Avhashoni Tshifhango, said that as the president of the country had said, they must observe, comply and shut down some of their services.

In an interview with Limpopo Mirror on Tuesday, Tshifhango said that essential services such as traffic officers, and community services, which include the cleaning of the town, and technical services, involving graders, would work as usual.

“We understand that some community members in rural areas will be holding funeral services and they will need

their roads gravelled. We will deploy some EPWP workers to help clean our towns, such Tshilamba in Mutale, Malamulele and Thohoyandou town,” said Tshifhango.

Meanwhile, South Africa will enter a nationwide lock down for 21 days with effect from midnight on Thursday, 26 March 2020, as part of efforts to curb the rapid spread of the coronavirus in the country.

Makhado to suspend some services

The Makhado Municipality’s spokesperson, Mr Louis Bobodi, said that the pay point for electricity in the villages would be open from 8:00 to 12:00, Monday to Friday. The library,

vehicle renewal, which includes motor vehicle licence renewals, vehicle registrations and licence payments will, however, be closed.

Traffic officers and call centres will be in operation, while workers who are working under waste management services will work for two days per week.

He further said that some of

the workers would be called if an emergency arose. Residents are advised that all events at the municipality have been cancelled.

He encouraged account holders to make use of the municipality’s online service offerings, where possible, rather than visiting municipal customer centres for over-the-counter transactions.

Ramovha advised the CPA to conduct a skills audit of all available skills within its beneficiaries and he urged beneficiaries to identify areas of training that they require.

Mulambwane CPA’s acting spokesperson, Mr Mashudu Muabve, said that they were aiming to benefit from the SEZ project. “Our interest is mainly in SEZ projects where we want to see it benefiting our people and the entire region in general,” Muabve said.

At this stage, the CPA has claimed 96 farms through the years and at least 14 of these claims have so far been successful. The farms are: Anthrobus, Coniston, Lekkerlaag, Delft, Dreyer, Malapchane,

Somme, Driehoek, Steenbok, Mapane Ridge, Vanderbyl, Sand Stone Edge, Joffree and Battle. Of these farms, Anthrobus, Lekkerlaag, Dreyer, Somme, Steenbok, Vanderbyl, Joffree, and Battle are all leased to the LEDA for the SEZ developmental project.

The Mulambwane CPA’s executive committee had requested the University of Venda’s School of Agriculture to assist with some of the challenges it is facing, through their Community Engagement Committee. During the strategic planning meeting, a university team comprising six academic staff members and five students facilitated the workshop.

Prof Joseph Francis, director of the Institute for Rural Development (IRD) at Univen, said that separate groups of

youths (male and female), adults (men and women) and a CPA executive were established. “Each one of them was facilitated by either Univen staff or students who had been well prepared to carry out the tasks,” he said. “Using the results of the engagements, we are compiling a draft strategic plan, which the beneficiaries will consider. Furthermore, we are packaging a comprehensive report of the entire workshop,” he said.

Francis said that they had used the workshop as a learning platform for post-graduate students. “Facilitating the workshop was in line with the university’s community-engagement thrust, which should yield an impact in society (in this case, land restitution),” he concluded.

According to Ravele, the claim has first been referred to SACM’s insurers and they will wait for feedback before deciding what further steps are to be taken.

Sixteen former prison wardens are now planning to sue their former employer, South African Custodial Management (SACM). The sixteen were fired after a prison break in October 2017. The wardens were also criminally charged and accused of creating an environment that had made it easy for seven of the prisoners to escape. The National Prosecution Authority (NPA), however, decided not to prosecute.

On the evening of 26 October 2017, riots broke out at the Kutama Sinthumule Maximum Security Prison. The riot erupted amidst protest action by a group of wardens as part of a pension-fund dispute with their employer, SACM. The allegation was made that the wardens, by neglecting their duties, had assisted the prisoners and allowed them to escape.

The case continued for more than a year, during which time the accused made several appearances in the Louis Trichardt District Court.

Through their lawyer, SO Ravele Attorneys, the accused made presentations to the prosecuting authorities, giving reasons as to why they should not be held liable for what had happened. On 7 March this year, the Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions in Limpopo sent a letter to SO Ravele, stating that the NPA had decided not to prosecute in this case.

A local soccer player, Mashudu “Judah” Madzhie (21), allegedly committed suicide at Matshavhawe last Thursday.

Madzhie played for Maelula United Brothers in the Safa Vhembe MMK Administrators League.

The spokesperson of the family, Mr Steven Mukwevho, said the incident had left them with many questions unanswered. “It is very difficult to accept the death of a healthy child whom you last saw a few days earlier.” He said that the family had accepted that it was the will of God and that they were looking to God for comfort.

“There are things that we as human beings cannot change. We all have to accept those things and go on with life,” he said.

The manager of Maelula United Brothers, Mr Khathutshelo Muvhumbe, said that Madzhie had always been positive and had told lots of jokes. “This is a huge shock and totally unexpected. We mourn his death.” Muvhumbe added that they had lost a young, energetic player who was enjoying football. He added that the whole team was in deep mourning and the mood was very sombre. “The whole team will have to undergo counselling.”

Ha added that the opposition teams had always had a problem with Madzhie’s skills on the pitch. “Local soccer fanatics will remember him for his defending skills, which made him an instant hero in the area.”

The secretary of Safa Vhembe, Vhavenda Vho Mulimisi Muneri, said that his association was deeply saddened by Madzhie’s death and he sent his condolences to the family. “News of this nature is heart-breaking, and our thoughts are with the family and fellow team members,” Muneri said.

According to Muneri, news of the death had sent shock waves through the sporting family in Limpopo. He also mentioned that Madzhie’s death was a huge loss, “and to repair it will not be easy. His tragic death left us with deep pain, grief and anguish.” He expressed his condolences to the grieving family. Madzhie will be buried tomorrow (Saturday) at Matshavhawe.

Some of our teachers used to work for extra hours, even conducting Saturday classes, but with laptops, they will come to the class fully prepared,” said Mammburu.

Mammburu was appointed as the principal of the school in 2018, at a time when it had been classified as one the dysfunctional schools in the region, and he has worked hard to push the school from 46% matric pass rate to 71% in 2018 and 89.2% in 2019.

New Vhembe CFO wants clean audit

By Silas Nduvheni The new chief financial officer (CFO) of the Vhembe District Municipality (VDM), Ms Mulatwa Thangavhuelelo, assured the public that she would be working towards the improvement of a clean audit as she assumed duty on 16 March.

“I will work to the best of my ability, with a positive attitude and the excitement of being given the opportunity to contribute to one of the biggest district municipalities in the province. I am looking forward to building a strong reputation at the district municipality in relation to financial management,” said Thangavhuelelo.

Thangavhuelelo was speaking on Friday at the mayor’s boardroom in an interview

with Limpopo Mirror after the executive mayor of the VDM, Cllr Dowelani Nenguda, and the municipal manager, Ms Sylvia Ndou, had welcomed her and the acting general manager technical services, Mr Eddy Ferdinand Chauke, to be part of the working team the district municipality was eagerly waiting for.

According to Thangavhuelelo, she hopes that they will be working as a team and that this will help the district municipality to improve the annual audit, which helps them to move from a disclaimer to a qualified clean audit.

Her appointment was confirmed during the recent special council sitting at the VDM Council Chamber in Thohoyandou. The position of CFO had been vacant since November 2018 after the resignation of

former CFO Mr Nyiko Mchavi.

The council also appointed Mr Chauke as acting general manager technical services, following the resignation of Mr Nthutang Ofentse on 6 February this year. The appointment of Chauke came into effect on 10 March, until such time that the appointment of new general manager technical services will be finalized.

Chauke said issues of water services and sewage must be attended to with immediate effect as VDM was the water services authority, aiming to deliver clean water to the communities.

The executive mayor of VDM, Cllr Dowelani Nenguda, was over the moon with the appointment of the new CFO, saying the district municipality could not function effectively without filling critical positions.

Manyisa sends out a message of hope

By Tshifhiwa Mukwevho The coronavirus is affecting people from all spheres of life – this was evident when Gauteng-based singer, studio manager and music promotions manager Tshepo Manyisa had to pack his bags and come back home to Vhembe District.

Speaking from Shayandima outside Thohoyandou on Monday, Manyisa said that the spread of the coronavirus had affected everyone, with the music industry not being the exception.

“I had shows on 25 March in England, but then they were all cancelled,” he said. “I also had several gigs at some schools where my artists and I would sing and motivate learners to stick to education. Hundreds of learners would sit down on the soccer fields or tennis courts and we would perform for them as part of our job, but now we are unable to do so.”

He said that no shows have taken place at all since the schools, taverns

and public facilities were all closed up for larger gatherings. “No shows, no money to feed the family,” he said.

He said that he had no choice but to stick to Pres Cyril Ramaphosa's shutdown, which has been put in place as a means of flattening the Covid-19 curve. “I love my people as much as I do myself,” he said. “So, I cannot say that we should bring people together, so that we can perform for them amid this coronavirus crisis.”

Manyisa's passion for music started at a very young age and eventually led him to Johannesburg, where he opened a music stable, Manyisa Records, which manages artists, hosts shows, and provides music and dance services.

“We are all praying to God to heal our land, so that everything can get back to normal,” he concluded. “I am sending

“I am a gospel artist, I preach through gospel,” said the 36-year-old Nelushi. “I mend broken hearts and bring people closer to God through music.”

He sees gospel music as a very powerful tool with a great ability and capability to touch and win souls. “Its message cuts deeper into the heart and brings joy to saddened souls,” he said.

“It brings about much-needed comfort to the depressed.”

He was inspired by Bishop (Dr) Roxley Masevhe. Masevhe was preaching at Nelushi's older brother's birthday party, and that was the day that Nelushi accepted Jesus Christ as his personal Saviour. That was also the beginning of a meaningful journey of his life and music. “It was 1992 and I was very young then, but a meaningful lifestyle began for me,” he said.

He was only thirteen when he started singing seriously in the church. “I thrived on singing,” he said. “When it was time for items presentation in the church, I would sing and touch many souls. Some would literally cry while some stood up to join in singing and dancing.”

His mentor is Apostle Nduvheni, who had encouraged him for many years. “He had walked with me from my Sunday school days to this very day,” he said. “He never gives up on me. He keeps me on my toes and takes me out of my comfort zone.”

He admires Rebecca Malope for her musical prowess. “As a child, I would go to my then neighbours, just to listen to her

songs on their radio since we never owned a radio at the time,” he said. “She had such an angelic voice.”

In 2010, he formed a group called Muvuledzi True Worshipers, for which he became a lead vocalist and key composer. Their debut album did not do well. But in 2019 he went solo with Riya losha, after his wife Mrs Sarinah Nelushi had encouraged him to never give up.

The album comprises 10 songs, which are Riya Losha, Vha fulufhelaho Yehova, Riya losha, We a ri vhidza, Vha a vhusa, Yesu u kha ndango, Madi a vhutshilo, Dzithendo, Show us the way, Ndi wavho, and Adonai.

“Riya losha was well received by the public and it continues to get massive response from people,” he said.

Tendani Maginya’s voice turns the heads

By Tshifhiwa Mukwevho Afro-soul artist Tendani Maginya has earned herself the adoration of thousands of music lovers in the country ever since she discovered music some two decades ago.

In 2002, she was only 13 years old when she was assigned the position of lead singer in the church's worship team. She had proven to the church elders that she not only had amazing voice, but that she loved and enjoyed singing from the bottom of her heart.

“Whenever I sang, they were all awed by my talent,” she said. “Music brought me back to my inner self when I felt out of place with myself.”

Today, Tendani, who resides at Tshiombo village, has carved a name for herself in the music industry, and she is now well known as Tendy J. “I love music in general, but as of now, I am focusing on Afro-soul, which is no wonder because I love soul and jazz,” she said.

“My music has jazzy influences in it but then it remains distinct with active beats.”

She said that in music she had found a way of communicating her innermost feelings to a wider world. “Music knows no boundaries;

“Music makes me feel calmer and more alive and it's a part-time job that keeps me busy,” she said.

Modipa finds solace in cardboard boxes

By Kaizer Nengovhela Having grown up in a disadvantaged background does not stop a young man from displaying his talent. Isaack Modipa of Tshiozwi has found solace in cardboard boxes, wire, woodcarving and his creativity.

The multi-talented Modipa makes beautiful cardboard box models of houses, animals and celebrities and this kind of art has earned him respect among the local community. "This is my God-given talent and I do not want to confine it to my village only," said the energetic artist.

Modipa said that he fell in love with art when he was very young. "I just played around with cardboard boxes, but never thought I would one day make something attractive."

He added that things had changed for the better in 2017.

"Everyone was impressed by my work and I then took my talent very seriously. I received encouragement from different people in the community and family members."

Modipa explained how he does his art. "I go out to the dump and pick up cardboard boxes, which I will then cut into desired pieces. I initially draw what I want to do on paper. I then convert the measurements into reality, on the cardboard box.

After studying the paper well, I then start creating the model, following the measurements that I did on the paper."

He added that this was better than not doing anything at all, “because I can now support my family.

Although I sometimes went for weeks without any customers, my hard labour has started bearing fruits, because at the end of the day, I can at least take something home”.

He said he had been unemployed for many years

and it was very difficult for him to support his family. He encourages other unemployed members of the community to start their own initiatives that will generate some funds.

Pfuluwani holds a BA degree in media and communication studies from the University of Limpopo.

In 2009, he pursued his postgraduate studies at the University of Pretoria and gained experience in supervision, budget planning, marketing, monitoring and evaluation and the scheduling of programmes and the allocation of broadcasters.

Pfuluwani counts among a group of excellent producers at the station and his work continues to impress listeners. His appetite for information, taste for good music, love for his listeners and zeal to tell it the way it is, place him among the best.

“I am that kind of person who is positive about every aspect of life. There are many things I like to do, to see, and to experience. You work for 24 hours per day. Wherever you are, you are on duty, because if something happens related to the news, you need to report it.”

According to the listeners, he is already a force to be reckoned with. “I always make sure that I do my homework by researching my topics in order to excel at my duties. I find radio work to be very interesting and challenging, especially when it comes to interacting with the listeners,” he said.

Pfuluwani wants to empower the youth, so that they do well in business. “I love youths who have a clear vision of what they want, regardless of where they come from.”

He said that knowing God was important. “Follow your heart and go to church regularly.” Pfuluwani ascribes his success and achievements to hard work and striving for the best in a career that demands discipline and determination. He said that he would continue to do his job and motivate young people.

He urged young people to refrain from all acts of criminality and focus on schoolwork. According to him, pupils need to be given moral education that encourages them to stay away from committing crimes.

“It is important for elders and teachers to tell the children about the dangers of involving themselves in crime,” he said.

Alkhatel’s mission is to make people happy

He was born at Tshakhuma and grew up at the Xivambu section of Bungeni village.

“As an artist, I'm a singer and I have only one mission, which is to make people happy whenever I'm on stage,” he said. “I first discovered my singing talent back in 1999 at the church. I became a church choir member in 2005.”

He recorded his first album in 2010, with Bil Records, and his first gig was at the Thabelo Funerals’ grand opening ceremony, where he wowed hundreds of guests. “I was known as Limpopo Boy then, and my then promotions manager, Mashudu Mabidi, had secured a gig for me,” he said.

He later fell in love with the Afro-Pop genre in 2015. He was lucky enough to meet Dupa, aka Masuvhelele, who then introduced him to Masana Records. “I recorded my first single, Tshipengo, with them, followed by Ndi Party Yanga,” he said. “I later cemented my career with tracks such as Nothing on you, Dzhavhelo, and Tshidi.”

Mr Moses Tseli said that the family was in great pain and saddened by her death. He said that the family was proud to have produced “one of the most valuable members of the community”.

He added that she had played a big role in uplifting the standard of education in Limpopo. She is survived by her husband and three children.

The Vodacom Foundation has an annual budget of approximately R110 million for corporate social investment projects, and just over 60% of the budget goes into education projects. “At the heart of our foundation is the belief that our existing technology can be an enabler for the provision of quality education,” said Khan.

“By investing in school stationery packs targeted at disadvantaged schools, this gesture will go a long way in helping children from impoverished backgrounds,” Khan said. “We are giving the learners tools to help them succeed in their schoolwork. This is in line with our vision to improve learners’ performance at school.”

Manaledzi Secondary School’s principal, Mr Joseph Phungo,

said that Vodacom had renovated the school’s computer laboratory and equipped it with 55 laptops.

Vodacom also provided two skilled youths to teach both educators and pupils how to use the computers.

“They erected user-friendly toilets, drilled a borehole, and now they have brought us stationery,” Phungo said. “Their help had borne good results: absenteeism has dropped in our school as pupils are enjoying the facilities and other resources. Our relationship with Vodacom Foundation is stable and rewarding. With Vodacom, we know that we are standing on the shoulders of a giant!”

The local traditional leader and community builder, Musanda Vho-Makhado Sinthumule, urged the pupils to make good use of the donated stationery. “I understand that Vodacom Foundation has so far done a lot for you; I therefore advise you to take good care of the resources that they have provided,” Musanda Vho-Sinthumule said.

Heavy penalties for several teams

By Kaizer Nengovhela During its sitting at the league offices in Thohoyandou last Tuesday evening, the disciplinary committee of the Safa Vhembe MMK Administrators league imposed heavy fines on several clubs.

Mulenzhe Fire Boys were fined R5 000 for causing the abandonment of their match against Lukau Hot Aces. The three match points were also awarded to Aces.

Igwe FC were found guilty of causing the abandonment of their match against Musina All Stars when an official of Igwe invaded the pitch. A fine of R5 000 was imposed on Igwe, who also forfeited the points.

Caledon Junior Birds were fined R2 000 for not marking the ground properly in their

match against Phadziri FC. They forfeited the three points to Phadziri FC. Mukhomi Real Madrid were fined R3 000 for failure to produce alternative soccer kit in their match against Langutani Blue Birds and they forfeited the points to their opponents.

Makhuvha All Stars received a fine of R2 000 for the indirect abandonment of a match by failing to provide a soccer kit when they played against Rockers. They forfeited the points to Rockers.

In the case relating to a match between Edson Muraida and Shanzha Continental Stars, Muraida were found guilty for causing the abandonment of the match when they failed to produce player identity cards.

They were fined R3 000 and forfeited the points to Stars.

Munyai wins SA lightweight title

Tshifhiwa “Spider” Munyai won the South African lightweight title when he defeated Siphosethu Mvula in Randburg last Sunday.

Munyai said Mvula was a strong opponent and he had enhanced his chances of challenging for higher honours.

In 2003, he moved from Vhembe to Johannesburg, trying to find a manager who could mentor him in order to realize his dream of becoming a professional boxer.

He met with several managers and trainers since 2003, with the hope that he would get assisted into becoming a professional. This did not materialize, however, as they trained him until 2017 without getting an opponent to fight him during all this time.

This left him very frustrated and even contemplating quitting the sport for good.

He said he had approached trainer Alan Toweel in 2018.

Coach Heric to face the axe?

By Frank Mavhungu The future of Mr Vladislav Heric as head coach of Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila (TTM) is on the line. The Serbian mentor was placed on special leave with full pay with effect from last week.

The club’s communication and marketing manager, Mr Tshidino Ndou, revealed that the decision to put Heric on special leave had something to do with an incident that occurred On special leave: Mr Vladislav Heric.

Ndou further said that the management realized that Mr Heric was still battling to come to terms with his father’s illness. “Realizing that he was not mentally capable, due to his father’s illness, we ordered him to allow his assistant to do the job and watch the game from the grandstand,” he said.

Instead of complying, the coach allegedly turned a deaf ear and gave the team instructions from the bench throughout the game.

According to Ndou, the team’s performance had deteriorated dramatically after Mr Heric had told them that his father was ill. Ndou stated that the team lost two matches in a row under the guidance of Heric before he left for Serbia, prompting the management to believe that his heart was in Serbia although his body was in the team’s camp.

Asked what would happen at the end of his special leave, Ndou stated that the club would decide if a need existed for them to charge the coach with misconduct. Should he be fired, Heric will be the third TTM coach to face the chop this season.

Another Serbian national, Mr Momcilo Medic, was the first man to part ways with Vhadau Vha Damani unceremoniously about six months ago. He was replaced with Mr Erol Akbay, the Belgian national, who was fired within the space of two months after his appointment.

Matlaba makes Leopards proud

By Frank Mavhungu Black Leopards’ future as an affiliate of the Absa Premiership League might be hanging in the balance now, but they have something to be proud of. The team’s skipper, Thabo Matlaba, recently got a call-up to be part of the national team, Bafana Bafana, in their next two African Cup of Nations qualifying matches.

Following his selection to be part of the national team, many soccer fanatics started to ask themselves questions about the star’s history as a soccer player. Born in Thembisa, Gauteng, on 13 December 1987, the allrounder started his football career at the now-defunct Leicester City FC way back in 2008. He moved to Mighty Tigers the following year.

He stayed there until the end of June 2010.

A scout from the professional side, Free State Stars, saw talent in Matlaba at a tournament while he was at Mighty Tigers. Free State Stars offered him a three-year contract, which commenced on 1 July 2010. Orlando Pirates could not wait for his contract with Free State Stars to expire. The Buccaneers bought him and in January 2012, the 32-year-old soccer star moved to Soweto.

His relationship with Pirates came to an end last season, making him a free agent. Matlaba, or Festival as he is affectionately called by his fans, joined Black Leopards with effect from 1 July 2019. He featured in 22 of the 24 league matches his team has played to date. Matlaba is a disciplined player. He has received only two yellow cards this season.

Duvha.

He scored the winning goal when the Thohoyandou outfit beat Stellenbosch FC 2-1 in their league match at the Thohoyandou Stadium about two months ago.

This is not Matlaba’s first stint as part of the national team. His debut game in the national outfit was in 2011 when Bafana Bafana lost 0-1 to Tanzania in a friendly match. Matlaba featured in 24 matches as Bafana Bafana player between 2011 and 2016.

Matlaba dedicated his recent call-up to the national team to his teammates and technical staff at Black Leopards, saying they helped him to revive his football career.
