(From page 1) The scenario that unfolded from this is that the Makhado Municipality now simply extends the term of every acting director’s post, and that of the MM, every three months. At present, the acting MM is Mr Kent Nemaname, while Mr N Dagada is acting director of corporate services, Mr G Ralishuku is acting director of technical services, Mr HJ Lukheli is acting director of community services, Mr Godfrey Raliphada is acting director of the budget and treasury and Mr RV Phalanndwa is acting director of development and planning. Why these key positions are not being filled is reason for much debate, although some believe this is because the “right” persons have not applied for the positions or have not been identified yet. One of the municipality’s fiercest critics regarding this issue is Mr Patrick Sikhutshi, chairman of the Zoutpansberg Community Development Forum (ZCDF). The forum has openly accused the municipality’s leadership of running a “jobs-for-pals” scheme. Sikhutshi also refers to the Makhado Municipality as a “captured municipality”. He stated that the failure to make permanent appointments led to indecisiveness to implement progressive decisions. “Nobody has authority to take decisions. All of these acting directors believe that they are at the mercy of the politicians to secure their positions. Hence, the wrong decisions [are taken] all the time. Take for example the sale of parks. Council is not involved, but individuals run away with these processes without the knowledge of councillors,” said Sikhutshi. DA ward councillor within the Makhado Municipality Pierre Smalle also voiced his concern about the situation. Smalle said he thought the reason why these acting positions were not being filled was most probably because of internal political struggles and an ANC cadre-deploy-

ment policy. “The reason for the long delay may be to allow people to act in positions that are closely aligned with the current political leadership and also to allow for other individuals who are currently still serving out their contracts at other municipalities to apply at Makhado Municipality (cadre deployment),” said Smalle. Smalle also echoed Sikhutshi’s sentiments that the failure to fill these key positions in the municipality impacts negatively on service delivery. “Having continuously acting managers, by not filling these vacancies with the requisite skillset, does enhance poor service delivery, as it has a direct impact on planning, daily management as well as accountability from lower structures or officials,” said Smalle. When asked to explain why these key positions had not been filled, Makhado Municipality’s spokesperson, Mr Louis Bobodi, said the council had advertised the vacant positions of the different directors more than once. “…the recruitment process in terms of Section 57 of the MSA produced only one suitably qualifying candidate for development planning, who later declined to join the municipality,” said Bobodi. He also stated that the position of the MM had been advertised 14 days after the council had declared the vacancy and that they had received very few applications. “…only one qualifying candidate was selected, and we could not proceed with the interview with one qualifying candidate. When we advertised the vacant positions of the municipal manager and directors for the second time, they were supposed to be appointed for one-and-a-half years and the interest was low,” Bobodi said. Sikhutshi, however, found believing that so few “qualified” individuals had applied for the positions and that so little interest existed difficult. “The ZCDF does not concur that there are no suitable

candidates to fill these vacancies. At one stage, a certain Demana was successful in the interviews for the [post of ] director community services and ready to take up the job for the remaining 12 months of the council. Having wasted time and money, no appointment was done,” said Sikhutshi. Another issue raised by Sikhutshi was that of the three-month extension period for senior officials in acting positions. “Section 57 of the Municipal Systems Act of 2000 is very clear. No director can act for more than three months. With the approval of the MEC [for Cooperative Government, Human Settlement and Traditional Affairs], you can extend it for three more months, but no further than that. In Makhado, directors have been acting since 2018. The SALGA guidelines are clear. With this in mind, the ZCDF believes the validity of these acting positions, including that of the municipal manager, is questionable,” said Sikhutshi. Bobodi, however, disagreed that anything untoward exists regarding the continued extension of the three-month acting period. “It is our understanding that council has executive powers to make policy or take council resolutions that will make sure that there is no vacuum after the three-months extension by the MEC, and that is what council did in appointing the present acting municipal manager and acting directors. Please recheck the Act and you will find that it uses the word ‘may not’ be appointed for a period of more than three months, not ‘must not’,” Bobodi stated. What Bobodi’s reference to semantics tried to prove was unclear. Adherence to legislation normally implies a respect for both the letter and the spirit of the law. Smalle, however, also felt that the municipality was acting within the letter of the legislation regarding the continued extension of acting

periods. “But it is not ideal to operate in this way as it directly impacts on holding people accountable … This proves poor planning on the side of the ANC and the municipality, and has contributed to the instability of the municipality (for example non-delivery of water to residents and the failure of the municipality to monitor its service-level agreement with VDM),” Smalle said. In trying to find a solution to the problem, Bobodi was asked by when these key vacant positions would be filled. “We are busy conducting interviews, and the three top candidates in each vacant position will be requested to go and write a competency test. We can expect that in July/ August there would be a municipal manager and his/her directors, provided they satisfy Section 56 and 57 of [the] MSA,” said Bobodi. In the meantime, Sikhutshi is not holding his breath that competent appointments will be made. “The ZCDF has no doubt that the positions of directors are reserved for cronies in the employ of the municipality, as was done with [the] acting director [of ] corporate services. This will be done to serve the selfish interests of those they are indebted to. We do not need stooges in the positions of directors. We need independent thinkers who will insist on taking constitutionally correct decisions. The ZCDF believes that if we appoint wrong people, then voters are the losers, as is the case now,” said Sikhutshi. He concluded that the fact that the “greedy leadership here has lost focus” was disconcerting. Questions about the current state of affairs at the Makhado Municipality were sent to COGSTHA’s provincial office last week. Although they acknowledged receipt of the question, they had yet to reply at the time of our going to press. This is one of the government departments known to be reluctant to respond to media enquiries.

Vhembe TVET students rattled after series of break-ins By Kaizer Nengovhela
Students at the Vhembe TVET College in Ha-Mashamba are still fearing for their safety, following a series of break-ins at a number of the tenants’ houses between 16 and 20 May. The victims were robbed of their belongings, and some got beaten up. The robbers seem to know that the students own expensive phones, tablets, laptops, clothes, and money, making these their target and leaving the students feeling
vulnerable and afraid. One of the victims, who wishes to remain anonymous, told the media how she and her roommate were robbed of cash, toiletries, mobile phones and other personal items. “It was around 02:00 on 17 May when the door of our room was kicked open and a man stormed it. We were so terrified. When we looked closer, his accomplice was standing at the door. They demanded money,” she said. While these two villains were ransacking their room, other
men were robbing a tenant in the next room. “They took his laptop, clothes, cellphones, cash and other valuable items,” she said. “We are worried about our safety and privacy. This is not the first incident. Many attacks are happening in the college’s vicinity, where criminals target our residences.” Another student said that three men appeared at the residential area where he lives at around 01:00 on Thursday morning (19 May). “I ran inside the house and locked myself in. There was a big commotion
outside at the other rooms, but I was helpless as I did not know what was happening,” he said. Provincial police spokesperson Brig Motlafela Mojapelo confirmed that cases of robbery and assault had been opened. No arrests have been made so far, but a manhunt for the suspects was launched and investigations are continuing. The police called on those who may have information to please contact the nearest police station. “All information will be treated in the strictest confidence,” said Mojapelo.

The Makhado Municipality has urged motorists and pedestrians to take care and obey traffic signs when crossing the N1 junction to Eltivillas. He found a spot outside the Shayandima Secondary School grounds’ gate, which had become a meeting place for people, and this was where business started booming for him again. “I wasted my time sleeping in the cold, ducking and diving bullets and knives for peanuts. After long retrospection, I came to my senses and now I am back to my roots, doing what I love - rendering shoe services, and my customers are happy.” From the money he makes here, he can look after himself and his family. Pienaar learned two valuable lessons through his experience. Firstly, that people sometimes get a second chance to start again, and secondly, to take whatever opportunity comes your way. “Work is scarce, but we can create our own jobs if we try. One of Pienaar’s regular customers over the years, Mr Samson Maduwa, said he would not take his shoes to anybody else. “Pienaar is the best shoemaker here, and he is providing an essential service to the community of Shayandima. Black Moon is busy cooking up a storm with his latest amapiano EP
Local musician Black Moon promises to make a slamming comeback with his latest amapiano EP, Kgotso Le Thabiso, which is soon to be released. Photo: Thembi Siaga.
By Thembi Siaga After a year-long absence from the music fraternity, Freddy Majuta - affectionately known as Black Moon Ligevhenga la Mpheni - is busy cooking up a storm and promises his fans that only the best tunes await them on his upcoming new amapiano EP, titled Kgotso Le Thabiso. To whet their appetite, he will be releasing a single from the six-track EP, called Deejay, early in June this year. Fans can start to dust off their dancing shoes as the talented musician is set to
release the full album shortly. “I’m currently working on my EP, which is going to feature a lot of upcoming local artists. For now, it’s still a surprise, but it’s going to be a fine one coming,” he said. The 27-year-old singer/ producer originally comes from Musina, but relocated to Mpheni Block C 10 years ago. He matriculated from the Ozias Davhana Secondary School. He released a full-length album, titled Tshiphiri (Mystery), some years ago, with the song Bvula Marukhu earning him recognition in the local music industry.
Black Moon’s greatest objective is to entertain his fans and showcase his talent. He describes his music as “therapeutic”. “I make people dance. All I want for my fans is to have fun,” he said. He unpacked on how he started his journey in 2010. “I was about 15 years old and just in love with making music. The moment I knew this was what I wanted to do was when the fans responded to my music and called out for more. It comes naturally for me. I can be sitting and decide to create something, and I know it will definitely be a hit.”
Black Moon is a self-taught artist. “I downloaded the FL studio software from the Internet and took it from there – step by step. It took a lot of hard work and dedication, but it got me where I am today,” he said. Of course, he encountered some stumbling blocks in his music career too. “The worst experience so far was when I got booked once and was told I would get paid upon arrival, and ended up not getting paid at all. But it seems to be getting better. I get booked throughout the year, and it helps me to sustain myself and my family.”
Young author aims to inspire Nombelani’s books tackle the challenges of the current world youth to overcome abuse By Thembi Siaga Confidence Mkhabele (28) aims to inspire the youth to overcome abusive relationships and mentor them to become independent by focusing on their own talents and goals in life. This emerging motivational speaker and author from Muchipise village in Malamulele launched three books at the AFM Rock Foundation church last month. Her latest book, titled Mihandzu (Gondzo ra ku tiyisela), is a non-fiction Xitsonga novel about reaping the fruits of patience and building faith to reach one’s goals. The book has already gained attention and she has begun to motivate youths on social media. “I have started a motivational show on my Facebook page, called Confidence Destined, and an online WhatsApp group, called Empowered and victorious. I also invite guests to talk about all aspects of life (social, educational, spiritual, career, gender-based violence, business, writing, music, etcetera). It also applies to the Facebook live motivation,” she said. Mkhabele’s first book, Destined to Overcome, was inspired by Professor Malungani Erasmus, the founder of Vision
FM and a pastor at the Don’t blame God International Ministries. “After learning about the teenage challenges that I faced, the professor’s sermon led me to write my book. I learnt how to build up a positive mindset while inside situations, which is vital. Only you have the power to overcome and build yourself,” she said. In 2021, Mkhablele published her second Xitsonga novel, titled Xinghunghumani xa misava, which addresses Covid-19. “This novel was selected by the Gauteng Department of Education to be on their curriculum,” she added proudly. She explained that her mentor, Mr Matimba Mabunda, had honed her writing
skills, which had empowered her greatly. “He gave me words of wisdom and knowledge on how to be a good public motivational speaker and increased my writing skills.” Her passion was sparked in her Grade-7 year, and her journey held many ups and downs. She said she had to write in a hardcover book, but never published any of the manuscripts. “The challenges I faced made me want to write books to help the world. It was not easy to sell it and reach more targets because of the Covid pandemic, but with the help from God and working harder I managed to sell more than 50 books.”

By Thembi Siaga Ntsako Nombelani, a resident at Jimmy Jones village in Malamulele, believes that his creative writing ability will address socio-economic challenges, corruption and various other aspects of life. The 38-year-old Nombelani is a political activist who spent his schooling days fighting for access to education through student organisations. His passion for writing took root when educator and multi-award winner Enock Shishenge of Tembisa requested him to contribute to a book, titled Hi landza Nhlalala, which means “We are following the honeybird”, in 2020. “I started writing after Mr Shishenge asked me to contribute to Hi landza Nhlalala, which was a tribute to our late brother and friend, Mosese Mtileni,” he said. Last year, Nombelani penned five of his own books, of which only two were published. The published books are titled Alexandra (Xitsonga poetry), which was published by one of the most celebrated Xitsonga creative writers, Mr Patrick Magaisa from TP Magaisa Publishers, and N’waMalini (Xitsonga poetry), published by Ndzhaka Publishers under Mr Shishenge. His books aim to bring awareness about the different challenges facing the young generation. “The books
focus on various aspects of life, such as the conditions of the people in Alexandra, socio-economic issues, African politics, governance, education and curricula.” It also pinpoints corruption and greed, love, transformation, and neo-liberal policies by the government. “The corruption which led to the collapse of VBS, imperialism, and the role of technology (4IR) in our lives, be it at work, home or schools,” he said. “My aim is to publish the remaining three this year. My first book (Alexandra) has been ap-
proved
by the Gauteng Department of Education for Gauteng schools and libraries,” he said. He wrote his books in the Xitsonga language, as he believes it to be one of the most underrated languages in our country. “I aim to contribute towards its (the language’s) growth and ensure that we pride ourselves on using our African languages to express ourselves.” On the challenges that local writers face, he said, “Selling books is not easy. People would rather buy alcohol instead of investing in reading material. The Xitsonga reading audience is not big, which is one of the challenges that I came across,” he said.

Art & Entertainment “Sex pests” force Lufuno Siobo to quit her music By Maanda Bele The entertainment industry has proven itself to be unkind to many talented female artists over the years, who will testify that some of the most difficult challenges they have had to face were the abuse they suffered at the hands of the men in this industry. Twenty-two-year-old Lufuno Siobo from Muanandzhele in the Vleifontein area decided to quit music altogether as a result of men in power in the industry who promised to make her famous if she showed them “special favours” in return. “In 2018, I was recording my first album, Vulani Mahoti a muya. A lot of people started showing interest in my music career, but I stopped recording because there were people, especially men, who wanted to use me for their sexual needs,” she said. Siobo was just five years old when she started singing. At the age of 10, she joined a worship team at her church. She had big dreams as a musician. “I used to listen to and watch other gospel artists performing on TV, and it really sparked my interest to be a gospel artist.
I used to attend gospel music festivals and some artists gave me platforms to work from. Things were really looking up for me, but to my disappointment, I had to deal with the kind of people who thought about nothing else than getting something out of it for themselves - even people I trusted
the most.” She said that she decided to leave the music industry because this common issue, which affects so many potentially great female artists, continuously gets swept under the carpet. Siobo is now pursuing a career in teaching. The talented Lufuno Siobo, who thought she had a bright future ahead of her as a musician, is pursuing a career in teaching now. Photo supplied.
Bomagie is already making waves with her debut album Entertainment The saying “dynamite comes in small packages” perfectly describes Margareth Malwela’s entrance into the highly competitive gospel music industry. Her debut eighttrack album, titled Yesu ndi ene Phindulo, was released only last week (16 May) and is already making waves in the local music fraternity.
Those who do not know her might think of her as a novice, but Bomagie, as she is known on stage, has been in the music industry for over a decade, singing in various church choirs and as one of the backing vocalists for local reggae music legend Shufflers Ragimana. This gospel singer from Khubvi village said that she did not really consider releasing an album of her own until she was approached by fans who admired her singing talent.

“Whenever I sang in church, at funerals or social gatherings, people would ask me when I was going to record my music as they enjoyed listening to my voice. I never took it seriously before, but decided to give it a shot earlier this year when I recorded a few songs.” The songs on the album, composed by Bomagie herself, are Yesu ndi ene phindulo (title track), Phanda na Yesu, Madembe, Ngoho ro zwi vhona, Ri a u renda murena, U tshi toda u vha Mukreste, Vuwani maswole and Mudzimu a re na ndavha. She said she was not surprised by how well her music was being received as she had a large fan base even before she recorded the album. “Singing is my God-given talent, and I use it to share the word of God. Besides that, I am a staunch Christian who believes in praising God through ministering and music. I am happy that, through my music, people can see that God is alive and He still talks to his people, even today. Hearing my music on the radio during the first week of its release was the best thing ever in my musical journey. I pass my sincere gratitude on to all the radio stations that are playing my music and everyone who buys my music.” For bookings, public performances, and music sales, Bomagie can be contacted on 072 136 1454 or 071 337 7774.
Slenderboy chucks his clothes Entertainment Fans of Zwivhuya Mukondeleli, better known as Moque Slenderboy in local music circles, have mixed feelings about the artist’s new stage wardrobe - or rather, the lack of it. Mukondeleli seemingly decided to ditch his usual dress code for underwear while he performs for his fans around Vhembe, and although some may find this more than a little awkward, he insists that his new look is working wonders for him. The much-loved artist, who hails from Fondwe village outside Thohoyandou, explains that it started out as a joke when he performed in Musina over the Easter holidays. “I have a song called Vhudabadaba, which is a big hit among my fans. People enjoyed the gig and, while I performed this song, I started to take off my jacket and top and the crowd went mad. I didn’t know how I took off my trousers, but the crowd loved it when I was left in only my underwear. When I was done with the song, I started putting my clothes back on, but this did not please the fans and they persuaded to me to perform in my underwear throughout the show.” After that show, the videos of his performing in his underwear apparently went viral on social media. “That gig changed my life. I started getting bookings almost every weekend, as far as Tzaneen, Polokwane and Gauteng. My music sales have also gone up since, which clearly demonstrates that it is working for me. So, I decided to make it my trademark. I went to Gauteng to buy different [underwear] outfits for my performances, so that I can change them regularly when I perform.” He said that, although some criticised his new stage wear, the majority of his fans were happy about it. He has a message for those who doubt themselves because they are afraid of what others might say of think. “Do what you love and what satisfies your heart. Those people who criticsze you will never give you an income. I live an honest life and earn my income honestly, unlike others who commit crime to survive.”

Phalaphala to donate boreholes to assist communities Phalaphala FM implemented the Rina Ndavha Project to address challenges faced by communities within the Vhembe District area, which the station considers to be their core footprint. This year, the project focuses on donating boreholes to communities in need of water. Phalaphala FM’s programme manager, Ms Sharon Ravele, said that the station was preparing to run an on-air campaign in June this year, in line with the Rina Ndavha project to donate a borehole to one community the listeners suggest to the station. “The station would like to continue with this campaign by donating boreholes to communities in the Vhembe District,” Ravele said. “Many of the villages in the Vhembe District experience water shortages. Residents have no water in the taps at their homes and have to buy water from water merchants. This initiative will help to alleviate this challenge. The first borehole was donated and handed over to the community at Tshipise Mubvumoni in March 2022.” She added that the station was working with the chiefs, different structures and municipalities with this project. Ravele said it had become a tradition at the station to plough back into the community. “This project wants to ensure that the community has access to clean water, which is a key ingredient in the fight against the spread of the Coronavirus. We heard about the plight of the communities who have been thirsty for a long time now, and we felt that the station could make an intervention by supplying water to the communities in need,” she said. The project will be run on the Tshiko Show, which broadcasts from Monday to Friday, from 12:00 to 15:00. Listeners are encouraged to listen for more details to participate in the project.

Unarine Mulaudzi from Makwarela Township’s story about how she beat all the odds by graduating with a Bachelor of Commerce degree truly is an inspiration to many – especially those from poor backgrounds. Her mother and role model, Tshinakaho Gloria Mulaudzi, spent many sleepless nights preparing vetkoek and fruit to sell in front of the local Home Affairs offices (Makwarela Home Affairs), to ensure that her daughter receives a good education. After Unarine passed her matric, she enrolled at the University of Free State. Her departure from home was a very emotional one. “As the City to City bus left Thohoyandou early that morning in 2019, my mother’s face went pale, while I also could not imagine leaving her behind. It was as if we were never going to see each other again.” They said their farewells and Unarine made the long journey to the Free State. At the university, she remained focused and spent most of her time studying, until she finally graduated in April this year (2022). “To my fellow black youths I want to say, everything is possible as long as you remain focused. The insurmountable challenges I went through were actually a source of my inspiration.” Unarine is currently pursuing her honours degree at the same university. Although her studies are very important to her, it has not restrained her from playing her part in
the things she feels passionate about. In 2021, Unarine founded the Unarine Foundation, a non-profit organisation that goes out looking for people who are willing to donate school uniforms to underprivileged children. “I don’t want learners in my area to go through what I did, and that is the reason why I source school uniforms and donate them to learners,” she said.

in the hospitality industry after matric. The Rofhiwa Manwadu Foundation was launched in November 2021, with the aim to encourage, enhance and support the development of intellectually disabled children by helping them to get quality education. “We also add our weight to the fight against
bullying of disabled children in schools by making their parents and caretakers, who are responsible for looking after them on a day-to-day basis, more aware [of the problem]. We further empower environmental awareness campaigns by planting trees at schools as a sign of living hope to the children,” said Manwadu.
On Thursday, 5 May, the Rofhiwa Manwadu Foundation handed over new wheelchairs to five disabled children during a function held at Thavhani Mall. This initiative is the brainchild of Vhembe’s Special Olympic ambassador, Rofhiwa Manwadu, who is also disabled. Two of the beneficiaries were Grade 12 learners from the area. Rilinde Ramphabana, from Niani Secondary School, was very happy about the donation. “I’m thankful for the wheelchair. “We will soon start fixing ring road at Tshakhuma,” says municipality By Bernard Chiguvare The problems at the Tshakhuma Ring Road were caused by the recent rains and are being addressed, said the Makhado Municipality in a statement last week. The municipality was responding to an article carried in Limpopo Mirror early in May, under the heading “Please patch up the ring road again”.
The article concerns the bad state of the road that starts at the Tshakhuma Fruit Market and runs along Road R524, cutting through the Tshakhuma Tribal Office and Mavhungu Andries Secondary School, on to a small fruit market in Mulangaphuma village, and back to Road R524. road, but only two weeks after this project had been completed, potholes started to appear again, leaving road users highly frustrated. Makhado Municipality had not responded to a media enquiry at the time of our going to press last week. The newspaper wanted to know how much had been spent on patching up the ring road last year, and who the appointed contractor was. According to Makhado Municipality’s spokesperson, Mr Louis Bobodi, R2 528 613 was spent on the project, with contractors Dzina 10 Trading, Mvuno Geo Tech, Makawana Solutions, J V N Rath Trading, and Courtesy Management appointed to do the work. Bobodi said that the municipality had investigated the state of the ring road and discovered that most of the current potholes were new because of the recent heavy rains that had penetrated the surface layer. “We are going to rehabilitate the total length of the road. The scope of the work includes base correction and maintenance of the stormwater system,” he said. Work was to start on Monday, 9 May. The contractor is expected to fix the potholes that they fixed last year once again, at no cost to the municipality. Limpopo Mirror contacted community members in the area last week but was informed that the rehabilitation work had not yet started.

It feels like yesterday. The pain of losing my dear friend still cuts deep into my heart,” said Elmon Tshikhudo, a close friend who also worked alongside Mmbi during his lifetime. Tshikhudo said that Mmbi played an important part in uplifting the standards of journalism in the Vhembe area. “Mmbi had been a humble journalist. His dedication and hard work still guide us even today, and we will always regard him highly. I wish wherever he is, he could see how the foundation he laid continues to lead us as we follow in his footsteps.” Rotondwa Nelwamondo, who worked with Mmbi at Univen FM, agreed. “He should indeed be remembered. Absolute power corrupts absolutely By Victor Mukwevho It is very painful and at times unbelievable to see that those who have the ability to shape and guide society are being exploited. The exploitation happens at many levels, but it is most evident in the financial exploitation of artists. It is a well-known fact around the world that the main purpose of the media industry is to inform, educate, and entertain, but it boggles the mind why it fails to inform society about the blatant exploitation happening right in the belly of the industry. The main victims of this inhumane economical exploitation are artists and female recruits in different electronic media facilities. Sometimes it is too difficult, if not impossible, for an up-and-coming recording artist to get airplay on both national and community radio stations. Music compilers (those who arrange/compile music to be played on different programmes) demand huge bribes from artists for their music to be selected for airplay. This method is often referred to as PAYOLA. As most musicians come from a very poor background, they fail to raise money to pay bribes and their music is only played during the midnight
A former member of the Southern African Music Rights Organisation (SAMRO), Avhatakali Joseph Tshisevhe.
slots, when the bulk of the listeners are sleeping. In the middle 1990s, rumours were rife that music compilers from national radio stations were receiving cars and money from big recording companies to influence them to select music from artists from their recording stables only. Yours truly once witnessed a BMW hatchback being delivered by an agent from a wellknown recording company in the country. The agent lives here in the Vhembe District. The car was delivered in the dead of the night at a wellknown luxury hotel next to the N1 in Polokwane. Music compilers have absolute power in deciding what music gets to be played on air, and this power is corrupting them absolutely. Some female artists are forced to go out with radio presenters to promote their music. These presenters talk to their “comrades in corruption” (music compilers) to help promote their girlfriends’ music. When community radio stations started mushrooming in the country a decade or so ago, many performing and recording artists thought they would get an opportunity to market their music better, but this seemingly did not happen. A former member of the Southern African Music Rights Organisation (SAMRO), Avhatakali Joseph Tshisevhe, said in an interview that he believed there were artists who were being robbed of their royalties. Tshisevhe, who is also a member of the music group Cornerstone, popularly known as AJ, said that this often happened because of a lack of knowledge. He said the problem was that many artists did not register their music with SAMRO and that was why they were exploited. “After recording their music, they just leave everything in the hands of the recording company. Let me advise them that immediately after recording, they must register their work with
Vic’s Views SAMRO, so that they would be able to receive their royalties. If your music is not registered with a copyright asset management society, you will never get what is due to you. You also forfeit all your royalties after three years,” he said. When asked if all the big role players in the music industry paid artists royalties, he said SAMRO got royalties from the SABC only, because community radio stations did not have money. But the exploitation is also not just limited to radio stations. Even in the print media, some unscrupulous journalists ask for money and sometimes sexual favours to cover the stories about their newly released music. In other instances, music producers, business moguls and government spokespersons also use inexperienced journalists to promote their own agendas. The journalists get coerced into writing promotional articles without the companies paying a cent to the newspapers. It is impossible for news editors and editors to know what happens between soccer team owners, sponsors of different community events and journalists. It looks as if, for as long as music compilers have absolute power, the status quo will remain the same, but when it comes to royalties, AJ Tshisevhe is advising them to register their music with SAMRO immediately after releasing their work. See you next week.

Silemela learners exposed to library By Elmon Tshikhudo The Limpopo Department of Sports, Arts and Culture’s library division visited the Silemale Secondary School on Friday, 22 April, as part of a library-awareness drive.
The orientation was carried out by librarians from the Prof NV Ralushai Library and Khubvi/Murongwe Community Library and coordinated by the Friends of Silemale. The campaign is held with the assumption that learners

who receive an orientation in library resources and services are more likely to seek needed research assistance for homework, assignments, projects, and presentations. Mr Patrick Bopape, librarian at the Prof NV Ralushai Library in Thohoyandou, commented: “The main goal of this orientation is to introduce learners to the library’s services and resources, as well as to educate and guide them on how to use the library. The programme informs learners about the libraries’ activities, services, programmes, opening hours, contact information, and rules and regulations,” he said. School principal Mr Moses Nethathe was optimistic that this awareness drive would definitely increase academic performance and further ignite learners’ thirst to excel in their school activities.

Kingdom Financiers reaches out to the mentally ill at Hayani Hospital By Silas Nduvheni

Life for the mentally ill patients at the Hayani Specialised Hospital near Sibasa has improved considerably, thanks to a donation made by Kingdom Financiers. On Friday, 20 May, they donated a big plasma television set, a fridge, chess sets, shoes and other much-needed items to the patients at the hospital. The company spent more
than R50 000 to purchase items meant to benefit the more than 200 mentally ill patients at the Hayani Specialised Hospital. The director, Ms Lolitha Ngobeni, said that they regarded it as a privilege to bless less fortunate people as the company itself was so blessed by God. “We normally make donations on a monthly basis to charity organisations, disabled people, and mentally ill patients in hospitals, because they didn’t choose the difficult
conditions they have to live under,” said Ngobeni. The acting executive officer of the Hayani Specialised Hospital, Ms Mulatedzi Mulaudzi, welcomed the generous donation. She said that some of the patients at her hospital had been neglected and abandoned by their families and communities. The donations, she said, would certainly make things more comfortable for them and make them feel more at home.

After passing standard six, he was taken to Parks College in Ha-Matlala, 20 kilometres west of Polokwane, where he matriculated. “That’s where I played my best football. I also did trials with Pretoria Bantu Callies, but could not sign for them as my parents didn’t want me to leave school for football,” he said. He started playing for the then Venda National team, where he played with local football greats such as Fondi Ndou, Ivy Mathuba, Horse Ligudu and many other local football heroes.
When he finally came back to Venda, he also stayed at a secret location. He then joined Shayandima Ford Stars, which was later known as Shayandima Bob Stars. “The team was owned by the Ford motor dealers, and it was composed of a galaxy of local football stars. I later played for Goldville Young Tigers,” he added. One of his former teammates, Boy Boy Mudau, mentioned that Chief Nemavhola was one of the best players during his days. “He was a marvel to watch when he was at his best. Sometimes he would also mesmerize his own players with his educated left foot,” he said.

Amazing victory for Sambandou By Frank Mavhungu Sambandou United Professionals are still in with a chance, following their 3-1 victory over Berea FC in their group winners’ playoff match for the Safa Vhembe Regional Association, which was played at the Rabali Stadium on Saturday. As if they were going to bury their opponents alive, Berea were the first to blow the trumpet. The game was evenly contested in the first half, but Berea’s original fighting spirit faded as the game progressed. Berea’s solitary goal came in the 30th minute. The team’s captain, Dakalo Ratshitanga, forced his way through the defence of Professionals before dishing a pre-cooked pass to Phuluso Ramanzi, who gave the ball the final touch. Berea enjoyed the 1-0 lead until the proceedings for the first half came to an end. United Professional came back from the half-time break with renewed self-confidence. They solidified

their midfield by introducing Bethuel Kwinda and Khathutshelo Mmbengwa, who replaced Sydney Mulondo and Soul Matambila respectively. Khathutshelo Mmbengwa made his presence felt when he scored his team’s equalising goal in the 57th minute. He blasted in a rocket after a scramble within the box. Obed Dzialwa of United Professionals was the only player who was reprimanded with a card. He tackled Gudani Munyai from behind in the 64th minute, prompting the referee to produce yellow. United Professional took the lead in the 70th minute. Bethuel Kwinda found the net with a long-range ground cutter. Berea then tried their luck by replacing John Manenzhe and Wamashudu Mugeri with Edwin Ramphabana and Dakalo Musetsho respectively. Their effort was not good enough to stop United Professional from increasing the margin. Bethuel Kwinda completed his brace with a half volley from the edge of the box. The keeper of Berea, Tshifhiwa Rasivhaga, watched helplessly as the ball went beyond his reach.

Angel opens gymnastics club in Thohoyandou By Kaizer Nengovhela Well-known local gymnast Angel Mulaudzi has her heart set on producing many more gymnasts from the rural areas. Angel has started her own club, called Wavhudi Gymnastics, in Thohoyandou. She said she initiated the club with the idea to develop rural young people and give them an opportunity to get trained in gymnastics. “I have seen impressive talent locally and came up with the idea of starting a club. Gymnastics teaches one to work hard, be disciplined and stay focused. It also helps with social interactions - knowing and accepting gymnasts from different backgrounds. Lastly, gymnastics is fun!” She invites young boys and girls who are interested in gymnastic to come and join them. “We are planning to make this sport big, and we want everyone to participate. If we get sponsors in the future, we will reward the gymnasts to strengthen their spirits.” She also invites businesspeople to support her club with sponsorships for the students. Angel is a second-year student at Univen, where she studies for a BSc in sport and exercise science. In 2021, she participated at the SA Gymnastic Games and returned home with

Growing up in rural Limpopo herself, she knows how scarce sporting resources can be. She trained gymnasts for a long time, and now aspires to continue this practise to help other promising gymnasts to reach their dreams and to produce world champions from the Vhembe area, without their having to move to the cities in search of better opportunities. “There is so much talent in the rural villages just waiting to be explored. We must nurture it, else it will be lost forever,” she said.

and Eric Mokone with Daniel Sebola and David Sibanda respectively. The captain of Igwe, Mutshutshu Mudau, was booked for a continued argument with the referee. Thomas Mbene of Igwe handled the ball within the box, prompting the referee to award a penalty to Young Chiefs. Rinae Maluga, who came on as a substitute for Takalani Sikhathi, made no mistake from the white spot. The score was still 1-1 at the end of the regulation time and the winner had to be determined through a penalty shootout. Young Chiefs then managed to convert four of their five chances through Asaria Mamburu, Christopher Netshimbupfe, Fhumulani Hlungwane and Rinae Malusa, while Igwe could score only twice from the white spot.
Igwe FC will not take part in the next round of the group winners’ playoffs for the Safa Vhembe Regional Association. They were booted out by Tshiungani Young Chiefs, who beat them 5-3 at the Rabali Stadium on Saturday. The game was equally contested from start to finish. Igwe threatened to score in the ninth minute. Their centre forward, Dalton Tshikovhi, received a neat pass from Eric Mokone and unleashed a half volley from the 20-metre area. The ball went a little wide, much to the disappointment of the team’s fans. The Musina side continued to knock on the opposition’s door, with Young Chiefs playing with their backs against the wall. Igwe finally broke the deadlock in the 34th minute. Thomas Mbene headed home, following a corner kick that was taken by Eric Mokone. The goal was a wakeup call for Young Chiefs. They took the game to Igwe for the remaining part of the first half. The score remained unchanged until the end of the first stanza, despite numerous attempts from each side. (TTM), Rhulani Manzini, had managed to score seven goals each. Seven players who had each scored six goals are Thulani Maphakisa (Jomo Cosmos), Mike Modise (JDR Stars), Kao-
gelo Mosadi (Pretoria Callies), Sibongiseni Mthethwa (Richards Bay FC), Rotondwa Mutsivhuli (Venda Football Academy), Moeketsi Sekola (Free State Stars) and Anton Van Rooi
(Hungry Lions), Ranga Chivaviro of Venda Football Academy and Rendani Ndou of TTM are among the players whose names appear on the long list of players who had scored three goals each.
“Jordaan group” may have already won the Safa Vhembe battle By Kaizer Nengovhela
The names were forwarded to the Safa’s national office. From the bits of information that could be gathered, two factions are vying for power in the Vhembe region. The majority of Local Football Association delegates support Philbert Ndove as the new president and Sam Matodzi as the secretary, while the other group support the current leadership comprising George Kubayi as president and Mulimisi Muneri as secretary. Safa instructed all regional associations to submit the names of nominees before 20 May. From what could be gathered, the names of Kubayi and Muneri did not appear in these lists. The regions were also instructed to hold their elections before 30 May. The new Safa leadership is believed to want to fortify themselves in anticipation
The battle between two factions within the Safa Vhembe region is heading for a showdown this weekend when the long-awaited regional conference and elections take place. The two factions were at each other’s throats the past few weeks, with disruptions and even threats of court interdicts being the order of the day. The outcome of the weekend’s elections will probably show how the pendulum has swung between the old Safa Vhembe leadership and the new one. The current leadership is being accused of running the association as their personal fiefdom, trampling on Safa’s constitution and flouting corporate governance principles. The candidates who were nominated by the four Local Football Associations (LFAs) are supporting the current president of Safa, Danny Jordaan, who is aiming to be elected as president for a third term. The current leadership of Safa Vhembe is, on the other hand, supporting Ms Ria Ledwaba to be the new president of Safa. The battle is set to play out at Munakisi lodge at Muledane on Saturday. of problems. The coming elections have already caused instability in the Safa-affiliated association. The current leadership recently declared the nominations null and void, and ordered the process to start afresh, as many current executive members were unhappy about the processes followed. Some of the members from different LFAs say that, as far as they are concerned, the 2022 Safa Vhembe elections are over, as Ndove and his group, who are their preferred candidate, will succeed. “The Local Football Associations have already taken a decision on who is going to lead Safa Vhembe. We know for a fact that the few LFA had separate meetings, where they declared their preferred candidate, and it was Ndove and his group,” said one person with knowledge of what is happening in the inner circles.
Sam Matodzi was nominated for the position of secretary. Photo supplied.

Jeff “911” Magagane ready to claim his title in re-match Local boxer Jeff “911” Magagane promised his fans a night of blood, sweat and tears when he faces his opponent, Sthembiso Maduna again for the featherweight re-match at the Booysens Boxing Club on Sunday, 29 May. Magagane and Maduna fought each other in KwaZulu-Natal in February last year, but Magagane called for a rematch as he felt the referee’s decisions were not fair. Maduna won the fight by a few points. “I am happy that my request was
granted. I will prove that I am the best and that the judges were wrong when they gave him the title,” he said. “I warn fans not to blink, because they may miss the knock-out punch. Watch out for Magagane. I will not disappoint my local fans, especially as I will be fighting at home. I want to avenge the loss I suffered when he [Maduna] robbed me of my title.” Magagane is adamant that he will outclass his opponent and said that he was not moved by Maduna’s recent threats to dent his record. “I am well prepared for the fight, and I am sure that I will bring home the champion-
ship belt. I am ready. I am physically and emotionally fit, and with the support from fans, coupled with the training, there is no way my opponent can beat me. I promise to floor him.” Meanwhile, Maduna said he looked forward to beating Magagane for a second time. He said he was happy when BSA allowed the re-match. “I’m ready for him. This fight will pave the route for me to contest internationally. I need more fights. That is most definitely my ultimate goal. I want to be the unified champion and the goal that I’ve set out for myself,” said Maduna.

before the actual final will be between Tshiungani Young Chiefs and United Artists, which is scheduled to start at 15:00. Young Chiefs had beaten Igwe FC 5-3 in their group winners match at the same venue last Saturday, while United Artists’ way to the champ-of-champs stage went via Marhavi FC, whom they beat 2-1 at the Saselamani Stadium on the same day. Teams belonging to the third group, SMSA FC, Tshimuthe FC and Rabali Pull Together, will play their matches at the Saselamani Stadium. SMSA and Tshimuthe FC will open the programme for the day. Rabali Pull Together and SMSA will test each other’s strength towards midday. The final match will be between Tshimuthe FC and Rabali Pull Together. The best team from each group together with the best runner-up will secure places in the semi-final stage. According to the general secretary of the league, Mr Eric Muneri, the date and venue for the semi-final matches will be announced after Sunday’s matches. The overall winner will represent the region in the provincial promotional playoffs. The best two teams in the provincial playoffs will be promoted to the ABC Motsepe League.
