Mimi se dood ‘n skok Deur Andries van Zyl Huldeblyke het die afgelope week van oral ingestroom vir die ontslape Mimi Greyling van Louis Trichardt, wat kort voor middernag Maandagaand aan ‘n massiewe hartaanval in die Zoutpansberg Privaathospitaal oorlede is.

Die dood van hierdie 39­jarige sakevrou en eienaar van Mimi Greyling Rekenmeesters het skokgolwe deur die gemeenskap gestuur.

Haar man Lourens en die egpaar se drie seuns, Gerhard (13), Stefan (11) en Christiaan (6), is platgeslaan deur haar skielike dood.

Volgens Lourens het Mimi vroeër Maan­ dagaand gekla van pyn in haar voorarms. Hy het toe besluit om haar eerder hospitaal toe te neem, sodat sy iets vir die pyn gegee kon word.

Sy is egter kort ná haar aankoms by die hospitaal oorlede.

Lourens het gesê hulle as familie is stomgeslaan deur die gemeenskap se onders­ teuning. “Ek het nie besef haar ‘klippie’ het so ‘n groot rimpel­effek gehad nie,” het Lourens Woensdag gesê. Hy besef daar lê vir hom en sy seuns ‘n moeilike tyd voor. “Maar ek het vir hulle die oggend ná haar dood wakker gemaak en vir hulle gesê: ‘Kyk, die son kom weer op en sal weer sak. Ons het nie ‘n ander keuse as om aan te gaan nie’,” het Lourens gesê.

Alhoewel haar dood steeds moeilik is om te verwerk, het Lourens gesê dat hy berusting daar­ in vind dat God een van sy “gunstelinge” kom haal het. Hy is dankbaar vir die jare wat hulle saam gedeel het. “Negentien jaar gelede was sy in ‘n groot motorongeluk. Ná drie dae in die hos­ pitaal het dokter Pierre Burger vir haar familie gesê dat hulle, hulle moet voorberei dat Mimi dit nie gaan maak nie. Op die ou end het sy 19 ekstra jare gekry en ook daarvolgens gelewe deur soveel moontlik te gedoen te kry, so vinnig as moontlik,” het Lourens gesê.

Wat laasgenoemde betref was Mimi bekend as iemand wat in alle aspekte van haar lewe uiters deeglik was. “As sy nie iets 100% kon doen nie, dan het sy dit nie aangepak nie,” het Lourens gesê. So ook het sy gelewe vir haar man en kinders. “Om 200% te gee, was vir haar halwe werk gewees … sy was ‘n ongelooflike Godvre­ sende mens gewees en daar was nie ‘n ma wat liewer was vir haar kinders nie,” het Lourens bygevoeg. Haar deeglikheid en akkuraatheid met syfers was juis dit wat haar so gewild gemaak het onder haar kliënte. ‘n Troosdiens word eerskomende Sondag, 30 Mei, om 12:00 vanuit die NG Kerk Moederge­ meente (Haantjiekerk) vir Mimi gehou. Lourens het sy opregte dank uitgespreek teen­ oor die hele gemeenskap vir hulle ongelooflike omgee. Hy het om verskoning gevra dat hy nie op almal se boodskappe kon reageer nie. “Maar wees verseker dat ons in die tyd wat voorlê nog baie op julle gaan steun,” het Lourens gesê.

Lourens sê hy vind ook vertroosting in die profetiese woorde wat Mimi gespreek het in ‘n Facebook­boodskap skaars ‘n halfuur voor haar

dood. Die boodskap het gelees: “The will of God will never take you where the Grace of God will not protect you.”

“Ek is dankbaar dat die Here haar vir ons geleen het tot nou toe. Ek gun jou jou rus, my vrou. Hoekom moes jy jou werk so vinnig klaar maak? Lief jou tot ons anderdag weer bymekaar is,” skryf Lourens in ‘n persoonlike boodskap aan sy vrou op Facebook. “Sy was my regterhand gewees,” het Lourens gesê.

Kidnapped businessman safely returned home

By Anton van Zyl The news that kidnapped businessman Shyam Premjee was safely back at home was met with relief and gratitude by the local community. The 36-year-old Louis Trichardt businessman was held for six weeks before being returned to his family.

Shyam was kidnapped on 9 April while on his way to work. The brutal manner in which he was abducted, sent shockwaves through the local community. His vehicle was blocked off by two vehicles after he left his home just before 08:00 the morning. The window of his vehicle was smashed, and the vehicle was later dumped in the Hanglip forest, not far from where the kidnapping took place. The kidnap­ pers presumably transferred Mr Premjee to another vehicle and fled the scene.

An intensive manhunt for the suspects and the safe return of Mr Premjee was immedi­ ately launched. After his kidnapping, no news was made available about his whereabouts.

Two weeks ago, another plea was made to anyone who might have information about Shyam to come forward. (Contd on P2)

Inwoners van die Soutpansberg het die afgelope week met hartseer afskeid geneem van nog een van die streek se geliefde inwoners, die 75-jarige Yvonne Jäckel. Sy is Woensdag, 19 Mei, weens hartkomplikasies oorlede.

Yvonne sal onthou word as een van die streek se mees geliefde mediese susters. “Aanvanklik was sy werksaam by die Louis Trichardt Gedenkhospitaal in beheer van die nagskof. Later jare is sy oor na die Zoutpansberger Privaat­ hospitaal. Daar was sy hoofsuster en vir ‘n tydjie ook instaan matrone ... Sy was veral ‘n goeie kraamsuster gewees. Sy sou ná die tyd die gemeenskap bystaan met raad oor borsvoeding en om te kyk of die ma’s en babas gesond is,” het haar dogter Adele gesê.

Gebore 24 Junie 1945, was Yvonne oorspronklik ‘n nooi van Hoopstad. Op skool was sy ‘n uitblinker leerder en ook hoofdogter. “Wat sport betref het ons al­ tyd vir haar gelag, want sy het altyd gesê sy het altyd derde gekom, maar daar was net drie wat deelgeneem het,” het Adele gesê. Baie sal Yvonne juis onthou vir haar skerp sin vir humor.

Alhoewel Yvonne ietwat met haar gesondheid gesukkel het, was sy nog heel aan die gang en haar dood was onverwags vir die familie. “Ons het nog twee weke gelede gaan inkopies doen.

Sy het ‘n spesi­ ale woord van dank gerig aan Ernst en Joan Joubert wat daar was ten tye van Yvonne se afsterwe om haar pa by te staan, dr. Fred Badenhorst, haar lewens­ maat André Müller, asook Avbob Louis Trichardt.

“Sy het regtig ‘n passie vir mense en die natuur gehad. Altyd ‘n bok vir sport en het altyd geglimlag,” het Adele afgesluit.

Whether a ransom was paid remains uncer­ tain, and no information was made available as to what had caused the kidnappers to release their victim. In an open letter, Shyam’s father, Viju Premjee, requests that the family be allowed the space to deal with the traumatic events.

“We pause with immense respect and sincer­ ity and ask to be allowed the necessary space.

At this point it would be impossible to respond to phone calls or to reply to messages as we as a family need to assimilate spiritually and emo­ tionally the events of the last few weeks, spend further time in prayer and give Shyam the support he needs. With time we will regain our strength and return to daily routine,” he writes.

Mr Premjee thanked the local community, as well as the SAPS and security structures, for

the support they had received. “(Thanks to) the selfless individuals who facilitated an instantaneous aerial search upon our cry for help. The provincial and national police leadership, the provincial MECs, the National Office, Minister of Police, business leaders, rural community leaders, staff, our overseas friends, educational formations such as the Sumbandila scholarship trust, one and all,” he said. “As a community locally, nationally, and internationally, you all have prayed both fervently and with steadfast faith and convic­ tion. Our Creator has from the beginning of time assured and reassured us that no prayer goes unanswered. It is with this innate belief that we drew strength to face each minute during the last few weeks. Certainly, here is again an example of that assurance,” he said.

From the onset, police treated Shyam’s disappearance as a missing-person case, in the absence of a ransom demand. Provincial police spokesperson Brigadier Motlafela Mojape­ lo was asked to confirm the circumstances surrounding Shyam’s release on Tuesday. He was also asked to confirm whether the police had closed the missing-person case but were continuing to investigate his disappearance. At the time of our going to press, Mojapelo had yet to respond.

Trichardt will be hosting their next Craft and Farmer’s Mar­ ket on 29 May from 09:00 to 14:00 at the SPCA grounds on the Vondeling Road.

Soutpansberg Skietklub bied op Saterdag, 29 Mei, ‘n ghong­skietkompetisie aan by die ou kommandoskiet­ bane buite Louis Trichardt.

Drie bane sal geskiet word, insluitend .22, handwapen en groot geweer. Elke skut sal ongeveer 20 rondtes nodig hê vir elke baan wat hy of sy skiet. Die koste beloop R20 per baan per inskrywing.

Die .22­baan gaan in die formaat van “ken jou perke” wees, terwyl die groot­geweerbaan oor ‘n maksimum van 400 m geskiet sal word.

Die kompetisie begin om 08:00 en duur tot 15:00, waarna ‘n prysuitdeling en bring­ en­braai plaasvind. Pap en sous sal voorsien word.

Ons het die eerste hoofstukke van elk van die stories geskryf.

Daar is ‘n afonderlike storie vir Afrikaans en Engels. Die uitdaging aan die jong skry­ wers is om voort te gaan en die volgende hoofstukke vir elk van die stories te skryf.

Die stories sal wissel, m.a.w. een week sal die Engelse hoof­ stuk gepubliseer word en die volgende week die Afrikaanse hoofstuk. Skrywers kan hoof­ stukke inskryf vir een of beide die stories.

Met elke hoofstuk moet die skrywers sover moontlik die bestaan­ de karakters akkommodeer, maar nuwe karakters kan ook in die storie gebring word.

Elke Donderdag verskyn ‘n nuwe hoofstuk. Ons jong skry­ wers het dan tot die volgende Woensdag kans om die volgen­ de hoofstuk te skryf en dit aan ons te stuur.

Wie mag deelneem?

‘n Ouderdomsperk van 19 word gestel, maar enigiets jonger is aanvaarbaar.

Inskrywings word nie beperk tot slegs sekere skole nie, maar die skrywers moet in die Vhem­ be­distrik woon.

Ons sal dit baie waardeer as die taalonderwy­ sers hul leerlinge aanmoedig om in te skryf, maar daar is ongeluk­ kig nie ‘n prys vir die skool met die meeste inskrywings nie.

Die volledige storie, soos dit ontwikkel, word op die koerant en aanpassings mag gemaak se webtuiste gepubliseer. Lynique het ‘n gemaklike skryfstyl en sy het die kuns duidelik bemeester om die

Wat vooraf gebeur het?

Aletta de Melker, ‘n hoofka­ rakter in die storie, is ‘n eksentrieke voormalige dokter wat op haar eie in ‘n reuse dubbelverdiepinggebou aan die kant van die dorp woon.

Drie jaar gelede, terwyl sy as dokter werksaam was by die hospitaal, het ‘n reeks jong mans gesterf. Die rede vir die sterftes kon nooit presies bepaal word nie, maar druk is uitgeoefen op De Melker om vroeg af te tree.

ohan voel amper skaam om Anneke so deur Werner se mediese lêers te sien kyk, asof sy hom nie glo nie. Hy blameer haar nie.

Hy is ook nie eintlik meer so seker wat om te glo nie.

Anneke sug en trek gefrustreerd haar vingers deur haar blonde hare. Johan sou vir haar sê dat sy mooi lyk as die atmosfeer nie so swaar soos ‘n staalkombers was nie.

“Jy’s reg. Hierdie papiere is vervals. Ek kan nie glo ons het nie eens daaraan gedink om vroeër hierna te kyk nie. En watter dokter sou hierdie goedgekeur het?” Sy blaai deur die papiere en haar oë vergroot skielik voordat sy oombliklik ophou blaai.

“Johan. Dis Aletta. Aletta het hierdie goedgekeur! Sy’t Werner se doodsertifikaat vervals!”

Anneke lyk vir Johan soos sy klein sussie op Kersdag: oë vol helder liggies en plannetjies. Hy voel heel trots op homself dat hy daaraan gedink het om te gaan kyk na Werner se mediese rekords. Hy kan sien Anneke waardeer dit ook, al sê sy dit nie.

Faber vind uit dat De Melker ‘n jonger broer gehad het.

Faber en Wagner ontvang ‘n uitnodiging om die plaaslike myn se jaarlikse dans by te woon. Tydens die funksie sak die myn se hoofbestuurder, Ian, skielik inmekaar en sterf kort daarna in die hospitaal.

De Melker maak kontak met Anneke en probeer haar verse­ ker dat sy niks met die sterftes te doen gehad het nie.

De Melker se broer, Werner, is egter nie dood nie en woon saam met Aletta in die huis. Sy voel skuldig omdat sy gedwing is om Werner se dood te ver­ vals. Sy glo egter dat die mense eendag sal besef dat sy nie skuldig is aan die moorde nie.

Tydens die begrafnis van die mynbestuurder besoek Anneke die myn en gesels met ‘n jarelange voorman. Hy vertel haar meer oor die jonger broer, Werner, en hoe graag hy ook op die myn wou werk, maar nie kon nie. Faber daag op met die nuus dat Werner dalk nie dood is nie.

Johan vra skielik: “Maar hoekom sal sy so iets vir hom doen? Ek kan nie onthou dat hulle huishoudelike omstandighede so aaklig was dat hulle sou wou ontsnap nie.

Altans, dis wat ek hoor by die dorpsmense. En dan, hoekom het Aletta nie ook net verdwyn nie?”

“Werner was ongelukkig daar, die voorman het my gesê. Hy kon nie die geleentheid kry om in die myn te werk soos sy pa-hulle nie.

Hy was goed in wetenskap en biologie.”

Daar is ‘n stilte wat heers voordat Johan byna skree: “Die botulinum!

Wie anders sal weet hoe om so iets ordentlik en effektief te kweek in hierdie dorp behalwe iemand met ‘n ongelooflike gawe vir wetenskap?!”

“Wag, sê jy...?”

“Ja, ek doen! Hy sal dit kan doen.” Johan stop vir ‘n oomblik voordat hy homself in die rede val. “Maar hoekom?”

Anneke se liggie flikker weer en sy antwoord: “Hy mag nie in die myn gewerk het nie! Sy grootste droom en elke ander man sy ouderdom kon dit uitleef, behalwe hy. Jaloesie is altyd ‘n goed genoeg rede om enigiets te doen, lyk dit my. Dink jy hy’s steeds in die dorp?”

“Onthou jy die figuur wat ons gesien het daardie dag by Aletta...”

Johan en Anneke dink albei vir ‘n oomblik voordat hulle terselfdertyd sê: “Die De Melker huis!”

Anita Badenhorst het die perfekte resep gekies om hierdie week met ons lesers te deel, want wat is dan lekkerder as ‘n koppie heerlike, warm, tuisgemaakte sop op ‘n koue wintersdag? Hoewel sommige sopresepte tóg ‘n bietjie moeite verg, is hierdie een maklik genoeg dat selfs die amateur kokke onder ons dit sal kan maak.

Die lemoenskil en lemoensap verleen ‘n baie unieke smaak aan die resep.

Bestanddele: 2 tl olyfolie (gewone kookolie sal ook werk) 2 uie, fyngekap 1 kg (2 medium, óf 1 ¼ groot) botterskorsies (butternut), afgeskil en in klein stukkies opgesny 1 blokkie hoender- of groente-ekstrak, opgelos in 500 ml warm water 150 ml vars room 1eetl lemoenskil, fyn gerasper 1 tl lemoensap sout en peper na smaak Metode: Verhit die olie in ‘n medium grootte pot en braai die uie totdat dit liggies verkleur is.

Voeg die pampoen by met ‘n klein bietjie water (nie te veel nie; pampoen bevat sy eie water) en kook vir 10 minute.

Roer dit tot dit sag is.

Voeg die hoender/groente-ekstrak, lemoenskil, lemoensap, sout en peper by en kook vir nog 15 minute.

Voeg die room by en meng die sop met ‘n klitser (of in ‘n elektriese menger) totdat die pampoen fyn is. Vir ekstra gladheid, giet die sop deur ‘n sif om laaste klein stukkies pampoen te verwyder.

Bedien 4 mense.

Opsioneel: voeg ‘n knippie of twee kaneelpoeier by, of gebraaide spek (bacon).

Anita is ‘n ou Waterberger, gebore en grootgeword op Nylstroom. Sy en haar man, Frans, is nog relatief nuut op Louis Trichardt. Hulle het eers sowat twee-en-‘n-half jaar gelede na die Soutpansberge verhuis om te kom aftree en nader aan die kinders en kleinkinders te wees.

Sy erken dat sy eintlik glad nie lief is vir kosmaak nie. Wanneer sy dus vir haar familie kook, kies sy gewoonlik die vinnige en maklike resepte uit, soos hierdie heerlike botterskorsiesop. Sy hou haarself wél graag besig met naaldwerk en is lief vir lees en om te gaan stap.

Louis Trichardt knows where charity begins Charity

The Children’s Lemon-Aid Project for Humanitarian Relief is an initiative coordinated with the Salaam Foundation and aims to support the health and dignity of those living in occupied territories, from the children of South Africa to the children of Palestine. Photo supplied.

On Saturday, 22 May, the Children’s Lemon-Aid Ambulance campaign and fundraiser took place at Evim School in Eltivillas. The event was a huge success for raising funds towards the purchase of emergency vehicles in besieged Gaza.

Community volunteers enthusiastically contributed to the cause by gracefully crafting homemade delicacies for sale. These included traditional Turkish baklava, sparkling toffee apples, cupcakes, gourmet popcorn, Kashmiri pink tea and, of course, lemonade. Additionally, visitors were treated to chip rolls, an array of Indian entrées, corn in a cup, and a comforting rice dish created with a special spice blend.

“In solidarity with the humanitarian cam­ paign, three tri­colour cakes, symbolic of the Palestinian flag, were auctioned off to the highest bidder,” said community member Aisha Daya Cassim.

Caring participants and families spent the day enjoying the outdoor playing area, coupled with a general knowledge quiz, face painting and a colouring competition. “It is critically import­ ant to teach our kids the lessons of collective humanity,” remarked one visitor.

Hierdie week, 25 jaar gelede, was die munisipale verkiesing van 29 Mei 1996 hoofnuus op die voorblad van die Zoutpansberger van 24 Mei van daardie jaar.
