Police on look-out for mysterious gunman

Matric pupil killed in bed

By Elmon Tshikhudo The young Malamulele D Section matriculant whose life ended tragically when a gunman shot and killed him in his bed last week Tuesday night could not be buried last weekend because of a lack of money.

His grieving mother was relieved when members of the community stretched out their generous hands to support the family in their hour of need. Thanks to the people of Mala­ mulele and Thulamela Municipality, Raymond Shavana will be buried tomorrow (Saturday).

Raymond was shot once in the stomach while sleeping in his room and his assailant disappeared into the night.

The Grade 12 pupil at EPP Mhin­ ga High School was described as a committed learner. His mother, Ms Mphephu Maluleke, a domestic worker for a family at Mangondi, said she was struggling financially as she

could not continue working since she became ill.

After news of the death of the boy and the plight of the family was made public, the community of Malamulele came to the family’s rescue. The lo­ cal councillor, Lazarus Baloyi, made several contributions for the burial.

The school where the boy received his education also came to the fam­ ily’s rescue.

During an interview with Mirror, Ms Maluleke said the death of her son had affected her a lot. “I am ill, as you can see, and the death of my beloved son was just like losing a part of me. The fact that I cannot even afford to bury him has added to the pain and suffering I am going through. Now that he can be buried, I am very relieved,” she said.

She said when the tragedy struck, she did not know what to do and where to go and she felt all on her own. She said she last saw her son at 21:00 when he said he was going to sleep as he wanted to wake up early

for his morning studies. She said she also went to sleep and at about 23:00, she heard a shot and a scream.

“When I asked, he said he had been shot,” she said.

She went to the neighbours who helped her call the police, and when the police and the ambulance arrived, Raymond was dead. “His death has plunged me into a state of despair. He was my only hope for the future and his death means part of me has been cut from my body,” she said.

The principal of EPP Mhinga High, Mr Aubrey Mabasa, said they were working hand in hand with the family to give the pupil a decent burial. “He was a pupil of our school and we could not run away after the tragic death.”

According to one of Raymond’s teachers, they knew him “as an ordinary, good pupil and his death shocked us.”

“Take good care of the elderly” - Mayor

Limpopo Traditional Health Practitioners' general secretary and chairperson of the Maila conservation of medicinal plants project, Mbulaheni Neluvhola.

The acting mayor of Vhembe District Municipality, Cllr Humbulani Mathavha, urged members of the community to take good care of the elders.

He was one of the speakers during a celebration for elderly people at the Elim Hlanganani Society for the Care of the Aged last Friday.

He added that the elderly must be treated with respect and dignity. "Elderly people are very prominent people in the community and must be taken

care of." Mathavha mentioned that his municipality cared for the elders. "These are the people who remain behind, taking care of orphans when their parents die," said Mathavha. He donated 300 towels to the elders during the event.

Elim Hlanganani takes care of elderly people and also runs youth programmes at the centre.

The centre also looks after or­ phans and vulnerable children.

During the event, the Dis­ trict Senior Manager for Social

Development, Ms Nkhumeleni Mulaudzi, adopted two orphans who are being taken care of at the centre. She said that her depart­ ment would continue caring for the elders and orphans.

The centre has 388 orphans and vulnerable children, 97 people living with HIV/Aids, 48 people with disabilities and 281 elderly that it is taking care of.

Elim Hlanganani was established in February 1993, after a needs assessment determined that the elderly people needed care.

Maila medical plant project finalised The first phase of the environmental assessment at the Maila Conservation project of medicinal plants outside Vleifontein has been finalised.

The R20-million project near Vleifontein was launched last year. Limpopo Traditional Health Practitioners' general secretary and also the chairper­ son of the Maila conservation project, Mbulaheni Neluvhola, says the provincial government must intervene to ensure that the process of completing the project is speeded up.

Neluvhola says they are con­ cerned about the lengthy period that the project is taking to be completed. It is almost a year now since Deputy Minister of Water and Environmental Affairs Rejoice Mabudafhasi

launched the project at HaMaila village. The more-than140-hectare project has been set to draw attention to the need for development, promotion and protection of the natural resources and their associ­ ated indigenous knowledge. It entails the establishment of a nursery, laboratory, guard house, medicinal plant garden, research centre, and fencing of the whole facility. There will be also initiation schools for both male and female initiates.

Medicinal plants are used to treat ailments such as coughs, headaches, fever, constipation and high blood pressure. Tra­ ditional health practitioners and community members will buy medicinal plants at the project once it is completed. Accord­

ing to Neluvhola, nothing has happened at the project since March this year.

Indigenous Knowledge Sys­ tems of South Africa Trust (IKSSA), appointed by the De­ partment of Environmental Af­ fairs to implement the project, say they have finalised the first phase of the environmental as­ sessment. Trust CEO Buyiswa Motloanya says they are on time and the project will be completed by 2013. Motloanya, however, says they have put more effort into planning.

Community members say they are hopeful that the project will continue. It has been re­ ported that about 80% of the African population relies on traditional medicine for their basic health needs.

Marole added that ECAM is a South African initiative held annually in the month of October, in order to raise awareness about the importance of eye health, specifically around the prevention and treatment of avoidable blindness.

"International World Sight Day, which is held on 8 October, is an important day within the ECAM calendar," highlighted Marole. World Sight Day is also commemorated during the month of October under the theme: "Delivering eye care to the com­ munities."

Marole advised that people should have their eyes tested regularly to prevent blindness. People were screened free of charge during the road show.

The Eye Care Awareness Month road show was conducted in conjunction with the oral health campaign. According to Dr Hulisani Khohomela, they taught people how to take care of their teeth during the road show. "We do not want people to Opthalmic Nurse Christina Baloyi screens a lose their teeth. Motorised wheelchair to make life easier for disabled Lufuno Disabled Lufuno Masevhe, whose legs are deformed and cannot walk, has been struggling for years to get a motorised wheelchair. Now, her life has changed for the better.

Masevhe (34), of Mukula outside Thohoyandou, recently received a motorised wheelchair, and for her it

is a new beginning. She was among the disabled women who received wheelchairs from the Vhembe District Municipality. The handover was done during a function for women that was attended by hundreds of women at the Thohoyandou Town Hall.

Masevhe, who was born disabled,

could not believe her luck when the Chief Whip of Thulamela, Ms Ma­ vuyisa Fungheni, Vhembe district Speaker Cllr Caroline Mahasela and Cllr Dorcas Mmboyi assisted her to her new “legs”. “It has been a long journey that I do not even want to think about. I have suffered for a long time, having to ask people to help me every time I wanted to go somewhere.

Those days are now history and I am facing life from a new perspective.

Life will never be the same for me,” she said. Masevhe, who is the director of Masevhe G Trading and Construc­ tion, said conducting bussiness in her condition has been very difficult. “My job dictates that I move from office to office, taking quotations, attending

briefings and looking for new busi­ nesses. It was hard for me, but now I can put everything behind me and continue doing my business.”

She said the wheelchair would save her a lot of time and work to her advantage. Masevhe said she was appreciative of what the government was doing for them as disabled peo­ ple, but said there were still many in her condition who needed help.

On behalf of the disabled people, Cllr Rapson Rambuwani said they would continue fighting for the bet­ terment of the lives of the disabled.

“As disabled people we are second to nobody and we need everything that would make our lives easier,” he said.

Census workers die in crash

Solly’s Discount World loses a stalwart One of the best-known faces at Solly’s Discount World in Louis Trichardt and a beloved member of the local community for the past 24 years, Jagadishandra Joshi (68), died last Wednesday.

Joshi, as he was commonly known, was born in Durban in 1943. He was the first born and had six sisters. At the age of 14, his father died and from a very young age he had to start looking after his mother and his sisters.

It was this same love and compassion for his family and friends that caused him to relocate to what is now known as Limpopo. His one sister got married and moved with her husband to Louis Trichardt. When her husband died in 1987, Joshi offered to move to this northern part of the country to help take care of her. When he arrived in Louis Trichardt, he joined Solly’s Discount World and for the past 24 years customers from all over have grown accustomed to this soft-spoken man. “We are totally devastated,” was Solly Noor’s response this week. “We not only lost a good and loyal worker, but also a dear friend. He was a part of Jagadishandra Joshi (68) died last Wednesday our close family,” he said. At the time of his death Joshi was a group manager at the Solly’s Group. A month ago, Joshi fulfilled a life-long dream by travelling to India on pilgrimage. He also visited two of his sisters who stay in India.

When he returned to South Africa last week, he stayed over with his son in Pretoria for a day. Last Wednesday he went to lie down for a while and never woke up.

Apart from his six sisters, he leaves be­ hind his wife, Ansuya, his son Divesh and his 98-year-old mother, La­ lita. A funeral service was held last Friday in Johannesburg.

Three census workers died while six were critically injured in a horrific car accident on Sunday. The accident happened after the driver of the bakkie they were traveling in lost control and it overturned.

The workers were returning from the the farms in Waterpoort where they had just collected information.

Firm foundation for Sanco’s conference History was made on 30 July this year, when two structures operating under the name of Sanco in Limpopo sat at the same table and decided to work as one.

Both structures agreed unani­ mously to support the provincial interim leadership core, which was put into place by the National Executive Council during a meet­ ing at the Unisa auditorium in Polokwane.

The provincial leadership core was given a mandate of disband­ ing all regional structures and establishing regional task teams

to take all Sanco branches to the provincial conference before the end of 2011. The provincial leadership core is comprised of Messrs Isaaih Masokameng (con­ venor), Progress Kutama (depu­ ty-convenor), Bernet Mahakane (coordinator) and Jack Maphoso (deputy-coordinator). The ad­ ditional members are: Messrs Lutanyani, Ngape Kgorotla and Beauty Mohlala.

Municipal official fired for alleged fraud The Makhado Municipality has dismissed a clerical assistant for allegedly committing fraud at its testing station in Vuwani. Mr Phineas Muila (38) was relieved of his duties last Friday. He allegedly stole money amounting to R114 000 from the municipality.

According to a source, Muila has been under investigation since March this year.

He was then removed from the traffic station and shifted to the municipality’s regional offices in Vuwani while the investiga­

tions were continuing. Muila’s disciplinary hearing started in September.

Municipal spokesperson Mr Louis Bobodi confirmed on Tues­ day that Muila was dismissed, following the disciplinary hear­ ing and thorough investigations in this regard. He said the mu­ nicipality had already instituted a civil claim against Muila. Ac­ cording to Bobodi, the munici­ pality is currently in the process to recover taxpayers’ money.

He said that the dismissal would send a strong message to

all municipal officials who might be thinking of involving them­ selves in fraudulent activities.

“The municipality will never leave a stone unturned in trying to ensure that there is proper administration of funds. We are committed to taking service to the people and will never sit and look on while people continue to abuse taxpayers’ money,” emphasized Bobodi.

He said employees who expe­ rienced problems should consult their employment assistance programme offices.

Alleged dog killer to face criminal charges The Louis Trichardt SPCA has laid criminal charges against a man from Muraleni (near Sinthumule) for allegedly stoning his dog to death.

According to local animal inspector Lawrence Khodobo, he received a call on Sunday afternoon, informing him that a man was busy stoning his own dog to death in the middle of the street, in full view of the public.

Khodobo rushed to the scene, but by the time he got there, the dog was already dead and its carcass dumped in some nearby

bushes.

The man was nowhere to be seen.

Khodobo took the dog to the Blouberg Animal Clinic in Lou­ is Trichardt for a post-mortem examination. The animal had suffered severe injuries, in­ cluding a crushed skull, broken bones and bruises. Apart from also being underfed and having a bad skin condition, Khodobo said the animal must have suf­ fered tremendously.

Community members identi­ fied the suspect and Khodobo later laid charges of animal cru­

elty under the Animal Protection Act (Act 71 of 1962) against the man. The case was registered at the Tshilwavhusiku SAPS on Monday. At the time of going to press, it was not yet know if the suspect had been arrested and whether or not he had appeared in court.

Khodobo urged members of the public to contact the SPCA immediately, should they wit­ ness any act of cruelty to ani­ mals. He can be contacted at Tel 082 965 5151. Alternatively, the SPCA’s office number is 015 516 0427.

Working towards a clean environment The management at the Thohoyadou police station changed their uniforms and office wear last Thursday for overalls and work wear. They joined the station's cleaners in cleaning the whole police station, offices and yard.

Outlining the purpose of the clean-up campaign, the station commissioner, Brigadier Rosina Mulaudzi, said as a station they had set aside a day each month specifically for cleaning pur­ poses. “We are one of the big­ gest stations in the province and we are serving a big area. This

means more and more people come here seeking service and at the same time, dirt is easy to spread, “she said.

She said the cleaners at the station were doing a good job, but management felt that they had to join them and lead by ex­ ample in order to motivate them in their job.

“We want to show them that what they are doing for the sta­ tion is not looked down upon, but is viewed as a meaningful contribution to the operation of the station.

It shows that we view all sec­

tions of the station equally and it will go a long way in uniting the whole staff component," she said.

“We are expected to be physi­ cally fit to perform our duties well.

A mere hour of hard work could be enough to give us a healthy body and the right frame of mind," she said.

Mulaudzi said as management they were encouraging all to be vigilant about littering. They want everyone to take an active part in the fight against littering, she added.

Facelift for Nancefield Community Hall Much to the delight of the local communities, the 45-year-old Musina Nancefield Community Hall is getting a facelift after renovations started last week.

W/O Herman Bila said he also contacted the complainant in the case, who showed willingness that it be reinstated and that she would be avail­ able to attend. Mulaudzi (40) of Thohoyandou was granted bail of R30 000 on Monday last week by magistrate Ronald Muthambi after a bail applica­ tion that took nearly three days.

A contribution towards Ubuntu by pupils

New traffic circle causes confusion The construction of a traffic circle next to JJ Motors and the Sasol garage at Thohoyandou has left motorists confused.

Construction of the traffic circle, which is part of the mul­ timillion rand neighbourhood project started at the beginning of the month, is envisaged to be completed at the end of next month.

On the first day of construc­ tion, a kilometre-long line of traffic could be seen moving at a snail’s pace. Many motorists were not aware of what was happening and several reached their homes very late in the evening.

Mirror visited the site where Thulamela community services manager Mr Mbulungeni Madi, site agent Mr Martin Nieuwoudt and site engineers were planning the smooth flow of traffic. Madi explained that development in Thohoyandou town meant that more and more vehicles were using the roads.

Within minutes, a plan was hatched and traffic was back to normal and there was no longer a congestion of traffic. “We have to move with the times. We

had to find ways of dealing with such a large number of vehicles and a traffic circle became one of the best options,” he said.

He said traffic circles had positive results as they beauti­ fied towns and they were envi­ ronmentally friendly as cars did not stop and emit gases, unlike at stop signs. He said the circle would also help in saving energy and that the carbon footprint would decrease. “Thohoyandou has been declared an eco-town and this augurs well as the traf­ fic circle will work against the effects of climate chang. It is a plus for our municipality,” he added. He said when completed, there would a smooth flow of traffic and this will meant that more and more road users could use the road without having to worry about accidents. “There are fewer accidents at traffic circles and we are very hopeful that, with this being the second one in Thohoyandou, motorists will not have any difficulty.

Moreover, after the comple­ tion we will have an awareness campaign and have our officers on standby to assist in the flow of traffic,” he said.

Madi also proudly announced

the commencement of a multimillion-rand taxi rank next to Eskom’s offices in Thohoyan­ dou. The taxi rank is part of the intermodal facility that will cover the towns of Thulamela, Malamulele, Sibasa and Tho­ hoyandou.

“There is a lot of development taking place in our municipality.

We just had a sod-turning cer­ emony for a major development at Sibasa. Very soon, we will be moving over to Malamulele, where massive development is also to take place. We are rejuvenating our towns and you have to bear with us while we are busy with construction,” he said. He mentioned that, as an intervention during the construction period, they were also erecting drop-off points for passengers along the main streets of Thohoyandou. He urged motorists to avoid the construction area at all costs and to be patient until the circle was finished.

Mr Martin Nieuwoudt said they would meet the deadline and that motorists would enjoy their festivities without having to bother about traffic conges­ tion.

A group of pupils from Ridgeway College embarked on an ambitious project to raise money for a child care centre for disabled children and children from vulnerable backgrounds.

They were seen last Friday and Saturday on the corner of Robot Electrical shop, making pancakes and selling them to members of the public at R2 each.

They call themselves the Hand Print Rotary Club. “The reason for our calling our club the Hand Print is that we can leave a mark on people’s hearts,” says Siki Mungulwa (17,) who is in Grade 11.

“Our object is to make a small difference in the big world.”

They told the Mirror that they also wish to inspire the youth from other corners of the country to do positive work that affirms a sense of ubuntu (humanity) within people. For instance, a fortnight ago they picked up litter on the roadside along the N1 road, from OK Grocer to the surroundings of Makhado Cross­ ing Mall.

“We believe our efforts mean something to our com­ munity,” adds the president of the club, Elamé Koorts (18).

“Even if it’s a small contribution, it goes a long way in helping those in need.”

The club has so far not re­ ceived any operational funds or help from any established

institutions or bodies. They rely heavily on making personal con­ tributions from their own pockets and homes; from articles such as the table, gas cylinder, flour and eggs, to cooking oil and spoons.

Like the strong men who built the huge structures of Rome, they seem to understand that dedica­ tion brings about the desired results in the long run.

The individual members with­ in the club are generally moved by the need to give and help out, which is a sense of humanity.

“If you are privileged to have everything you need and want, then it’s only right to help others and give back to your commu­ nity,” concludes a Grade 9 pupil, Taariq Tayob (15).

Police, municipality and community to fight crime

New facilities for Mudimeli The pupils of Mudimeli High have reason to smile. Going into the bushes when nature calls is no longer necessary. This comes after the provincial education department has built four blocks of toilets at the school.

The value of the toilets is R450 000. They were constructed by Ru­ bicon Civils and officially handed over to the school three weeks ago.

“This will really improve the stand­ ard of teaching and learning at our school. Pupils will no longer dodge classes, because the toilets are now inside the school premises,” said the acting principal of the school, Mr Alpheus Mabuduga. He said that there were dangerous animals in the

bushes that could harm the pupils.

“This is really a relief to the school and we appreciate that Government has realised there was a need for decent toilets at the school,” added Mabuduga.

The toilets were built as part of th­ eDepartment of Education’s sanita­ tion project. The chairperson of the school governing body, Mr Joseph Mukwevho, applauded Government for the move. “We have been asking for toilets at the school for years, and it is good that the department has responded to our problem,” Mukwevho said. Mudimeli High School is situated in Mudimeli vil­ lage and falls under Ward 37 of the Makhado Municipality.

Police in Vhembe have joined hands with the Thulamela Municipality, as well as the community to fight crime in the area around Thohoyandou.

Together, they staged a crime awareness march in Thohoyandou over the weekend.

“We do not want just to show them that we are here, but we want also to assure the community that we are available to assist them at all time,” said the station com­ mander, Brig Rosina Mulaudzi.

Thulamela Mayor Cllr Grace Mahosi urged communities to join hands with the police and work together in order to break the cycle of crime in the community.

“Together with our people we can deal criminals a hammer blow,” said Mahosi.

The campaign started with a motor­ cade led by police on motorbikes and a convoy of police vehicles accompanying uniformed police in a march that has never been seen in Thohoyandou.

Police in uniform marched through the streets of Thohoyandou to where the formal function was held. Speaking during the event, Mahosi said crime had become like a curse in Thoho­yandou and had negative implications for develop­ ment of the municipality. “We need to stand together to fight this scourge.

who are bringing development into our municipality,” she said. Major General Nyiketani Baloyi, who heads seven police stations in Vhembe, said communities had a role to play in the fight against crime.

He urged community members to expose criminals, so that they could be arrested and put in jail. “Crime occurs in your areas. You know who the criminals are.

Please expose them, so that they do not have anywhere to hide,” he said.

He said they were happy that they man­ aged to arrest some kingpins in armed robbery through the assistance of the community, but they still needed help in arresting the remaining gangs.

Statistics South Africa (Statssa) has moved swiftly to suspended eight census field workers over alleged nepotism.

The suspensions came after communities of Phalawubeni and Mathura had accused a Statssa coordinator, Nkhesani Ngoveni, of hiring his rela­ tives. Subsequently, the communities boycotted the census.

Lizah Ngovena and Tebogo Ngovena are both said to be Ngoveni’s sisters, while Olga Mbombi, Loyd Mavulwani and Lonah Mavulwani are alleg­ edly his cousins.

It is alleged that Tumelo Selepe and Percy Mabunda are also related to him.

The provincial executive manager for Statssa, Thabelani Mokwevho, confirmed the suspensions.

Facts to consider to prevent heat stroke As summer is heating up, ER24 has issued a statement with important facts to consider on how to prevent heat exhaustion and how to deal with heatrelated emergencies.

The past week, residents expe­ rienced severe heat conditions.

During such conditions, the public are reminded to stay well hydrated and out of the direct midday sun. People should also ensure that they wear appropriate clothing and sun cream when outside.

“Should you partake in out­ door activities, make sure that you have adequate resting ses­ sions and keep hydrated at all

times. Do not consume excessive amounts of alcohol and ensure that there is appropriate adult supervision when children are swimming,” said ER24’s Werner Vermaak.

Vermaak warned that babies and the elderly are more likely to suffer from heatstroke, due to inadequate thermal regula­ tion systems and urged family members to monitor them closely during periods of severe heat.

“It is also important that you do not leave your children or animals in a vehicle, even with the windows open. It is often that people focus their attention on other humans, but we should

also keep our pets in mind,” Vermaak said.

The symptoms of heatstroke or heat exhaustion include severe headache, weakness or disorien­ tation, nausea or vomiting, mus­ cle cramps and severe thirst.

“It is important that a person presenting with these signs and symptoms be closely monitored as it could result in the patient’s losing consciousness or having seizures, which could result in death,” Vermaak warned.

Persisting signs and symptoms of any of the above may need im­ mediate medical attention.

“Rather seek medical help im­ mediately,” Vermaak said.

Luruli promises better services to Nkuzana Makhado Municipality Mayor Cllr Mavhungu Luruli met the residents of the Nkuzana area outside Elim last week to listen to their service delivery concerns.

Luruli said the government did not only go to the people dur­ ing elections. “This is a caring government and we are always available to address challenges,” she said.

She added that she was aware that there were still challenges

which residents faced with in their areas. She urged community members to work closely with the municipality to overcome their challenges.

The residents complained about the lack of electricity sup­ ply, water, lack of transport in the area and damaged streets.

Mr Richard Mtileni, a wheel­ chair-bound resident, said that the municipality had built toilets for the residents, but they were not user-friendly for the disabled.

“The municipality must also erect ramps, so that it can be easy for disabled people to access them,” he said. He added that the streets were only graded when there were funerals in the area. Other residents complained that their pension grants were sometimes stopped for no reason. Luruli promised the residents that all the challenges facing them would be addressed. She also appealed to them to participate during the IDP meetings.

New album for Asnath Mulaudzi

Makhado Municipality’s mayor, Cllr Mavhungu Luruli, praised Ms Violet Phulwana for her sacrifice and hard work in society. If at first you don’t succeed, try and try again. This is true even for musicians who tend to lose confidence when their debut albums don’t do well.

One musician who refused to give up after her first attempt is Asnath Mulaudzi (39). She released her debut album in 2009, which didn’t penetrate the market mainly because of the poor sound quality. Today she has just come forth with a new album, titled Mbilu Yanga, which is loosely translated as ‘My Heart’.

“I didn’t like the result of my first music project,” she says. “I am even ashamed to call Zwothe Zwine Nda Vha Zwone my first album. I con­ sider the second album to be the first one.” She says she is very satisfied with the techni­ cal quality of Mbilu Yanga and that fans must expect to enjoy the variety of rhythm and melo­ dies in the songs. “I also sing

in Shona and Xitsonga,” she says with passion for her work.

“The album contains ten tracks which will definitely connect you with God.” Asnath agrees with the fans who say her strength as a mu­ sician lies in the quality of her voice. Recently, she was commissioned to compose two songs for the Muhuyu Day celebration, which took place on 24 August. Among the digni­ taries who attended the function was Vho-Thovhele Kennedy Tshivhase, who was clearly impressed by her performance.

“I composed two songs in praise of Mahosi (Chiefs), the subjects and the land we live in,” she marvels.

“I sang strongly about unity, harmony and prosperity. They liked my music, which made me feel happy.”

Despite the acknowledge­ ment she is receiving from fans and traditional leaders, Asnath

has not gained much from her toil. She blames it all on the spread of piracy. “This ten-ten method of piracy is killing us,” she says, referring to the fact that those who pirate the music albums sell them for a mere R10, which is almost nothing when compared to the normal price of the original work.

“Some of us end up selling our CDs cheaply in order to beat piracy, which is a pity in itself because we lose more. Apart from people who manage me as an artist, I’ve got two dancers whom I must pay.”

Soon she is all smiles when she tells Mirror that her favour­ ite singers are Rebecca Malope and Lusanda of Lusanda Spir­ itual Group. She says they sing from the heart. “Like these celebrated singers, piracy will never make me lose heart,” she concludes. “I am not in the music industry by chance. I am here to stay!”

Thulamela traffic officials ready for festive season Thulamela Mayor Grace Mahosi said the council’s new traffic vehicles could not have come at a better time. She was handing over 11 traffic vehicles to the traffic section of the municipality on Monday.

The new vehicles are nine sedans, a breakdown vehicle and one van.

The vehicles cost R3,5million. Unveil­ ing the vehicles, an upbeat Mahosi said the cars came at the right time when the festive season was just knocking on the door. “We would love to have an accident-free fes­ tive season and this can only be realised if there is visible traffic policing. We hope the new patrol cars will come in handy and

will help reduce road accidents during this hectic time,” said Mahosi. She said as a municipality they cared about people’s safety and this was the reason why they had beefed up their fleet.

Thulamela traffic chief Thinandavha Munwana said their aim was to have more and more officers and cars to match the ever-increasing number of drivers and vehicles.

“We are fully prepared for the festive season, and we are not target­ ting any specific group but all who do not heed the rules of the road,” he said.

He warned motorists to obey all rules as they will be shown no mercy during this time.

Community services manager Mr Mmbulun­ geni Madi said the new fleet was part of the municipality’s plans to have more officers on the roads in order to increase visibilty. “With Christmas approaching, we are expecting a high traffic volume, which will need more officers on the road. We are fully prepared to deal with the situation,” he said.

He said the vehicles would be distributed to the whole of Thu­ lamela, including the three towns of Malam­ ulele, Thohoyandou and Sibasa.

Three to sit 18 years for rape A fortnight ago, the Limpopo High Court in Thohoyandou sentenced three men to 18 years each in jail for rape. This was for an incident that took place on the 3rd of June 2007 at Ha-Mashamba village in the Tshitale area.

Nyambeni Netshivhangani (29), Michael Davhana Hamisi (36) and Kuvhanganani Munyai (26) confront­ ed a 17-year-old girl and threatened her and her boyfriend with violence.

They then dragged her into the nearby bushes and took turns to rape her.

The woman later laid charges of rape against the accused at the police

station. The three men were eventu­ ally identified and arrested by the Makhado Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit (FCS).

“The investigating officer and his team did their best to bring the perpe­ trators to book,” said the spokesper­ son for the Makhado SAPS, Captain Maano Sadike. “It is noteworthy that the investigations which were carried out by the police had led to the conviction and sentencing of the wrongdoers.”

The three will spend the next 18 years in jail.

Tshifudi women keep bodies and minds fit Ralushai’s name to be immortalised A group of women in the rural Tshifudi village have come up with an idea to keep themselves busy.

As this is one of the most rural areas in the Thulamela Munici­ pality, common sense dictates that resources are scarce. Like most rural areas, the area lacks entertainment and most of the villagers are unemployed.

The situation is such that many start indulging in alcohol and illicit sex. But a group of 30, mostly unemployed, women has opted out of the temptations and

is focused on doing something that can improve their lives.

Everyone is talking soccer and traditional dancing in the village.

They organized themselves into a soccer team and have a tra­ ditional dance group. Faranani Wo­men’s Club was formed late last year. Started by fewer than ten women, the club is growing by leaps and bounds. Today, the club boasts more than 30 members who do not miss their daily practice sessions. They do not have uniforms, but this does not discourage them from participating in sport. They play wearing tattered shirts and shawls.

They do not even have a proper soccer ball or a play­ ing ground.

The leader of the group, Tshilidzi Ne­ m a ­s i w a n a , says jobs are scarce and most, if not all, of their mem­b ers are unemployed.

Some of us play soccer while others are involved in traditional danc­ ing and this gives room for us all to participate in the games in one way or another. The exercise keeps our bodies fit and healthy while at the same time giving us an opportunity to improve our soccer and traditional dancing skills, “she said.

There used to be a problem where many women used their grant money to gamble, but all that has come to an end, due to the introduction of the club in the village.

Esteemed academic Prof Victor Ralushai might have died, but plans are at an advanced stage to have his name immortalised.

Communities in Vhembe, led by Mphaphuli senior traditional leader Vho Thovhele Gole Mphaphuli and structures from the surrounding villages, have come with the idea to name the main street entering Mbilwi after the late academic.

The idea was discussed with the family during the funeral service of the academic giant at Mbaleni cemetery a fortnight ago.

“This gentle giant has done more than enough for the country. His name cannot just go into obscu­ rity; it must be immortalised. As a community, we felt the best way to remember him would be to name the biggest street entering Mbilwi after him,” he said.

Magoloi said negotiations were at an advanced stage with stakeholders, which included the mu­ nicipality. “We are very confident that this idea will be bought by all as it concerns a great man.

Always clad in green matching pants, topped with an Orlando Pirates hat, one can hardly suspect him of being anything other than a simple soccer fanatic.

Killed in accident

A 21-year-old man died mysteriously after a wall of a house he was trying to demolish fell on him. The incident happened at Tsianda outside Tshakhuma in the Lwamondo area last Saturday.

Mr Dovhani Mu­ laudzi was helping out at his friend’s house when a wall they were demolishing fell on him. Nobela Stars shine over Rospa United In their Vodacom Promotional League match that was played at the Tshifulanani Stadium on Saturday, Nobela All Stars were too good for Rospa United, whom they beat 3-1.

All Stars made their inten­ tions clear from the onset.

Their strikers kept on knocking on United's door. The United strikers, Happy Mahuntsi and Mashudu Mashapha, could not

live up to the fans’ expectations as they were tightly marked.

All Stars opened their account in the 24th minute. Leabua Lemena tried his luck with a ground cutter from outside the box and the keeper of United, Tshifhiwa Netshisaulu, watched helplessly as the ball hit the back of the net. Mashudu Mashapha of United was brought down within the penalty box seven minutes thereafter. The ref­

eree, Thebelo Tshienda, never hesitated to point at the penalty spot. Marks Munyai converted the goal.

Oscar Stars unexpectedly beat Tshiozwi Makhitha Oscar Stars proved all the critics wrong when they unexpectedly beat Tshiozwi Dynamos 1-0 in their Safa Vhembe SAB league match played at the Tshiozwi grounds on Saturday.

The score was not a true reflec­ tion of the match, as the home side missed countless chances.

Dynamos had their first taste of bad luck in the 12th minute, when Aluwani Nedzamba shot into the opposing keeper's hands from the penalty area.

Godwin Mahuwa was the first player to receive a yellow card.

The Kutama lads realised that it would be difficult to find the net if they continued volleying from behind.

Dynamos should have scored in the 42nd minute, but their demon-striker, Mpho Mavhandu, missed the chance. No goals were scored in the first half. The second half started at a snail's pace, with both teams struggling to penetrate each other’s defence.

Dynamos gained momentum as the game progressed and in the 64th minute their lethal striker, Aluwani Nedzamba, shot wide, with the keeper well-beaten.

Stars scored in the 78th minute via Nthungufhadzeni Ramut­ shila, after he received well cooked pass from Khathutshelo Ramuedzisi.

The Safa Vhembe FNB U/15 girls were crowned as the champions during the Lucas Radebe FNB festival, which was held at the University of Johannesburg's Soweto Campus from 2 to 7 October.

Five regions participated in the tournament for U/15 boys and girls. The girls from Vhembe won all their matches, while the local boys were beaten in the final. According to the head coach of the team, Mr Justice Mtileni, three players from Vhembe were awarded with trophies for their commitment. Xiluva Chabalala was the top goal scorer of the tournament, while the trophies for the goalkeepers of the tournament went to Mashudu Tshifularo (girl) and Ntwanato Mtileni. The young players were coached by Dan Munyai, Glenda Forumela and head coach Justice Mtileni.

The players were welcomed back by the mayor of Makhado, Cllr Mavhungu Luruli (second from right), when they arrived back in Louis Trichardt last Saturday.

Disability campaign at Londanani Children with disabilities should not be hidden away from communities.

These children should rather be sent to spe­ cial schools where they can be assisted, said the chairperson of the Mphephu SAPS's Victim Em­ powerment Unit, Godfrey Musweswe, during a disability awareness campaign. "Disabled children, like everybody else, have a right to education. We know that there are parents who still feel ashamed of the fact that their children are disabled," he said. Musweswe added that parents should stop using their children's disability grants for their own benefits, while they do not take good care of the children themselves."

Parents and children took part in the campaign held at the Londanani Care Centre. The centre currently takes care of 66 disabled children and is situated at Rabali Village in the Dzanani area. A well-known gospel singer, Trica Selala, entertained guests during the event.

Centre manager Ms Rose Denga-Maremba said she was happy that the campaign was also meant for parents.

4-2 for Table Newcomers Table Newcomers booked a place in the next round of the prestigious Total Soccer Challenge KO Competition. They beat Mbilwi United Stars 4-2 victory at the Lufule ground on Sunday.

The victory did not come cheaply, as the winner was determined through a penalty shoot-out after a goalless full-time score.

United Stars had themselves to blame for the defeat as they could have sealed the game within the regulated time. Their strikers let them down on countless occasions, but Newcomers’ keeper, Godfrey Mavhina, also denied them obvious goals.

In the first place it was their right flank, Ndivhoniswani Muthabo, who caused an upset. Last chance to submit pics for calendar The region’s photographers have until Monday, 31 October, to submit their entries for the Zoutpansberger and Limpopo Mirror’s highly popular annual calendar photo competition.

Prize money totalling R6 000 is up for grabs, with 12 winning pictures to be chosen for each of the year’s months. Winning en­ tries will be published in an A2format 2012 calendar, which will be used by the Zoutpansberger and Limpopo Mirror for market­ ing purposes. The calendars will also be sold to the public at a minimal fee.

Cellphone or postcard-size pho­ tos will not be considered for the competition.

All entries must clearly in­ dicate who the photographer is, their contact details, where

and when the photo was taken and what camera was used. Al­ though technical aspects such as the quality and sharpness of the photo will be taken into account, the photo should, however, only make for a nice picture.

Each of the 12 winning pho­ tographs will be bought from the photographer at a price of R500 per photo. Entries can be handed in at the office of the Zoutpansberger at 16B Joubert Street, Louis Trichardt.

The MEC for Public Works, Ms Thabitha Mohlala, recently announced that two blocks of classrooms and two blocks of toilets will be built at Sundani Primary School.

The 66-year-old primary school was severely damaged in a storm last year. Mohlala addressed the community during the sod-turning ceremony and stated that the government could afford R2,4 million for the project in this financial year “and a lot more is coming your way,” she said. She added that the project had already employed 28 local people. She urged the principal and staff to look after the property upon its completion. She further warned them not to allow the pupils to use the dilapidated classes. “The department has provided mobile classes, so it is better to make use of them,” she said. According to her, the project would last for five months.

Moroka Swallows will play against Ajax Cape Town at the Dobsonville Stadium, while Santos and Maritzburg United will meet at the Athlone Stadium in Cape Town.

Sivhaga’s stablemate, Vhonani Netshidamboni, will also be challenging a yet-to-beannounced opponent for the vacant South African title in the middleweight division on the same day.

Netshidambuwoni also has a record of six fights, all of which he won by a way of knockouts.

Netshidamboni’s trainer, John Ne­ makonde of the Sibasa Boxing Club in Sibasa, said: “We produced good boxers like Muvhuso Nedzanani, Terminator Manyelenylele, Pfariso Neluvhalani and others, but with Net­ shidamboni, boxing will be revived.

Black Leopards out of Telkom KO

Black Leopards will not take any further part in the Telkom Cup. This follows their 1-2 defeat by Orlando Pirates at the Orlando Stadium last Saturday evening.

Lidoda Duvha put their two new signees, Joshua Obaje and Sizwe Sibiya, to the test against Pirates.

Although Sibiya was later replaced with Karabo Tsepo, his presence could be felt as he kept on dishing out telling passes to the strikers, Rodney

Ramagalela and Joshua Obaje.

The home side was awarded a free kick in the 24th minute. Isaac Chansa took the free kick and Benni McCarthy, who was waiting inside the penalty area, gave the ball the final touch to give his side a 1-0 lead.

McCarthy suffered a pulled muscle in the process and he could not continue with the game.

His substitute, Bongani Ndulula, took time to adjust to the tempo of

Pirates missed a for­ tune when their overlap­ ping defender, Andile Jali, shot wide from the penalty area. Vincent Mabusela of Leopards was lucky to escape with a mere caution after kicking Dian Klate on the chest in the sec­ ond half.

Leopards later for­ tified their left flank by introducing Thomas Madimba for Luyolo Mapolisa. Their final replacement came moments thereafter, when they sacrificed Ramagalela for Grant Lungu. The Buccaneers increased the margin through Bongani Ndu­ lula, who unleashed from the edge of the box. Leopards’ soli­ tary goal came in the referee’s optional time via Moses Kwena, who headed home after a corner kick.
