Public records and ongoing investigations since 2018 revealed that six old-age homes were funded in different provinces, each receiving an initial R20 million. Every single one has been dogged by problems and most, if not all, are still unfinished three years later.

Proactive funding differs from the NLC’s “normal” funding process as it is not call-driven. Back to the ruins In April 2020, months after the NLC’s Mafela promised that engineers would visit the project, nothing was still happening. Site visits were not possible as the country was placed in lockdown. Limpopo Mirror visited the site again in October 2020, only to find that the situation was much worse. The site was clearly also being vandalized.

This time we spoke to locals and interviewed the local headman, Joshua Nthabalala. He told us that the project was initially his, along with some other community members. They had planned to start a small communal farm and even received start-up guidance from Ms Mavhungu Lerule-Ramakhanya, currently Limpopo’s MEC for Transport and Community Safety.

“We had plans to fence off the place and seek funding from some provincial and national departments, so that we could build a chicken coop and buy chicken food and medicine,” he explained. They also planned to purchase some cattle.

But while they were still planning their project, “some people from Gauteng’”, who identified themselves as part of Mushumo Ushavha Zwanda, arrived and offered to build a stateof-the-art old-age home that would benefit the local aged, Nthabalala said.

Now he and Mavhungu Lerule and the local ward councillor, with the assistance of lawyers, are “busy ensuring that the project is completed”. “But then we would like to turn it into something else … not an ‘old-age home’ because we have got no plan in place for that,” he said.

However, Nthabalala was not clear on why lawyers were involved in his quest to have the project finished.

“That’s my project and those people from Gauteng came and hijacked it.”

Finding the people behind Mushumo After the NLC refused to disclose the names of the people behind Mushumo Ushavha Zwanda, we set out to trace its directors.

Mushumo was registered as an NPO in 2004, which means that the reports should be publicly available at the NPO Directorate managed by the Department for Social Development.

The department, however, failed to respond to several requests for details about the entity and its directors.

We continued the quest by digging into CIPC records. One of the directors of the NPC, Musandiwa Leonard Sidimela, is a director of nine companies, varying from what appears to be a mining company to an aviation company. He is also a director of a fairly new NPC, Atlas Social Development Projects. Atlas has no involvement in the Limpopo old-age home debacle.

Atlas SDP has a website with contact information, so we asked them to put us in contact with Sidimela.

“Due to Covid, (the) last time we had dealings with Mr Sidimela face

to face, was in January 2020,” the company responded. Mr Sidimela is one of four directors of this non-profit company (NPC), which was started in early 2020. On their website, Atlas-SDP describe their core function as to “effectively and transparently manage grant funding raised toward Social Development Projects”.

The phone number provided for Mr Sidimela went to voicemail, so we sent him questions via email. He responded the same day but refused to elaborate on the project and the problems experienced.

“The project is still under (the) NLC, any public pronouncements or media statement are managed by (the) NLC,” he replied, referring our questions to the NLC’s media spokesperson, Mr Mafela. In his reply, he copied NLC officials, among them the one dealing with proactively funded projects, Marubini Ramatsekisa, and Tsietsi Maselwa, the NLC’s acting chief operating officer.

We responded to Sidimela, pointing out that a non-profit entity is legally and morally accountable to the community it professes to serve. The NLC had stated on numerous occasions in the past that it merely funded projects and did not drive them.

Sidimela eventually sent through some responses, which were mostly an attack on the newspaper. “I understand you want to write a juicy frontpage story about that project, is it ok but don’t lie or use information from third parties,” he wrote.

Sidimela denied that no consultation had taken place with the local community prior to the project’s starting. “We have the CLO (community liaison officer) from the community, all general labour comes from the community, the security comes from the community, the material comes from the community business, you see … if there is something untoward the community will have long revolted,” he said.

But who did the work?

One of the questions put to Sidimela was about the name of the contractors responsible for the construction work. In 2020, documents were leaked to an investigative journalist from GroundUp, which included bank statements for Upbrand Properties, a company linked to suspended NLC COO Phillemon Letwaba. The statements reveal a link between Upbrand and several of the unfinished old-age homes, including the one at Maila village.

Upbrand was also involved in an unfinished, shoddily built drug rehabilitation centre near Pretoria, which is currently being investigated by the Hawks and the Special Investigative Unit. In this case, a dormant, Limpopo-based NPO was hijacked and used to secure R27.5 million in funding for the drug-rehabilitation project.

Upbrand Properties was appointed as contractors to build the centre. At the time, the sole director of Upbrand Properties was Johannes Letwaba, brother of the suspended NLC COO. He subsequently resigned as director of Upbrand.

In the period between December 2017 and November 2018, several references are made to “Maila”, “Mushumo” and “Lim old age” in the leaked bank statements of Upbrand Properties. They refer to salaries and wages, building material, rental of machinery and even the purchasing of safety equipment. More than R510 000 was paid out of the Upbrand account for what appears to be expenditure related to the old-age home at Maila village. In the same period, more than R300 000 was deposited into the account with “Mushumo – Lim old age”

But wait, there’s more After enquiring about Sidimela’s contact details from Atlas SDP, they asked why we were trying to contact him. We sent them a brief background of the situation at Maila village, as well as photographs of the deserted construction.

Atlas spokesperson Mr Mixalis Taxylas said: “(This) is not the way we do business, and is an indictment on the developmental sector,” he said.

Taxylas later wrote back, providing some feedback on preliminary information that they could gather. He said that, during a discussion in 2019 with one of Atlas SDP’s directors, Sidimela explained that his NPO (Mushumo Ushavha Zwanda) had been “hijacked”.

We sent more questions to Sidimela, asking him about the hijacking of Mushumo, but he ignored all further requests for comment.

Limpopo Mirror sent an email to the NLC’s commissioner, Thabane Mampane, asking whether the organisation was ignoring questions from some reporters. She did not respond.

A proposal would be tabled to provisionally suspend Mr Sidimela as a director while clarity is sought on the Maila village project, Taxylas added.

The NLC under scrutiny

Where to from here?

In his initial response, Sidimela blamed Mushumo’s absence from the old-age home site over the past 20 months on Covid-19. “We are trying to go back this year using skeleton staff. For instance, only staff that will be involved in roof installation will be allowed on-site, paving staff only will be allowed on site,” he said.

He told the Limpopo Mirror to “relax” and said: “...we will call you and the people of Limpopo once we have completed and (we will) celebrate together.”

Meanwhile, the old-age home at Maila village is literally falling to pieces. The unfinished structures are being vandalized and are rotting away.

When Limpopo Mirror visited the site this past weekend, the picture was a sad one. The fence surrounding the site was pushed down, presumably to allow looters to remove building material from the site. A group of young boys said that a big white truck and a bakkie had arrived to collect materials from the site.

The people from Maila village will seemingly have to wait for the promised old-age home, while questions about the R26-million in Lottery funding go unanswered. The Lotto sign board has also fallen off, rusting away on the ground.

In October last year, President Ramaphosa signed a proclamation authorising the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) to probe alleged corruption in the National Lotteries Commission. Both the SIU and a special Hawks task team are currently busy investigating several dodgy NLC projects.

The SIU also raided the NLC’s offices in Pretoria in December last year. Several of the dodgy projects that the Limpopo Mirror has exposed, including the Denzhe Primary Care grant, form part of the investigation.

The Hawks were asked whether the old-age home projects were also being investigated but have not yet responded.

When Sidimela was asked about this, he denied any connection. “The company that we have appointed is MT Civils, the one you are talking about we know nothing about,” he said.

The only reference we could find to such a company was MT Civils and Plant Hire from Tzaneen. The address supplied is a residential home and Sidimela did not respond to requests for contact details.

During the visit to the construction site in October last year, we noticed a temporary shed next to the buildings, in which we found discarded building plans and notes. On the building plans, the engineers for the project are indicated as PKT Consulting Engineers.

This company also links back to the Lotto’s COO, Phillemon Letwaba. Apart from Letwaba, who resigned as director in March 2017, several members of his family, including his wife, are former members of Upbrand. Themba Mabundza, who resigned recently as the sole director, also has links to Letwaba. Sthembiso Jim Skosana, who is now the sole director, was appointed in July last year.

Eloise causes extensive damage in Vhembe

By Bernard Chiguvare An estimated 78 families from the Vhembe region were badly affected by the recent heavy rains brought on by tropical storm Eloise.

“The majority of these people have started receiving food parcels, dignitary packs, blankets and other basic amenities,” said the Limpopo Department of Social Development in a media statement on Monday, 25 January. This follows the heavy rains that wreaked havoc in some parts of Limpopo the past weekend.

According to the Department of Social Development, most of the affected families are in the Vhembe District.

Limpopo Mirror spoke to some of these families.

Around midnight on Saturday, 23 January, heavy rain poured over Vuvha Seville village in the Makhado area and damaged two houses belonging to Portia Ranenyi. She lives with her husband and three children. “We really could not do much. We managed to remove a refrigerator and a hot-plate stove, but most of our clothes and beds were soaked inside the damaged houses,” Ranenyi said. She had been staying with neighbours since the flood and she got food from her grandmother. At the time of our going to press, they still had not received assistance.

On Sunday, Limpopo Mirror visited a few of the families in Vleifontein, Extension 1. Some said they were struggling to get out of their homes to buy food from the nearest shops. Residents complained about the lack of maintenance as far as the stormwater drainage systems are concerned. They accuse the municipality of not cleaning these regularly, which causes the area to flood during heavy rains.

Motorists who use the main tarred road from Vleifontein to Elim had to drive very cautiously, as some parts of the road were badly damaged by the rains. Trees were uprooted in some hilly places along the road.

Nsindane pointed out that the school belongs to the community. He said that their property should be respected and that vandalising and stealing from the school would only hinder students’ progress in learning. “We need our children to enjoy education in good classroom conditions. He said that the information on the computers was very valuable and, in some instances, irreplaceable.

“Computers are valuable material that help to educate pupils,” Nsindane said and asked that, if anyone knew anything about the break-in and theft, they could help the police by providing information that could lead to the arrest of these perpetrators.

Police spokesperson Brig Motlafela Mojapelo said that the police had opened a case of housebreaking and theft.

He warned that thieves were taking advantage of a lack of security during the lockdown period. “We ask members of the community not to buy stolen goods,” Mojapelo said. “Whoever is found in possession of the computers stolen from the school will be arrested. No mercy will be shown to such a person. We are warning people to always buy directly from the shops.”

Limpopo Transport and Community Safety MEC, Mavhungu Lerule-Ramakhanya, visited the taxi rank next to Shoprite in Louis Trichardt on Friday to encourage taxi drivers and commuters to adhere to Covid-19 protocols. According to Lerule-Ramakhanya, the aim was to ensure that taxi operators, drivers, queue marshals, commuters and cleaners understand the health protocols and the need for behaviour change. She also encouraged commuters and taxi drivers to make sure that windows are open when people are being transported. Lerule-Ramakhanya and her staff members helped sanitize taxis and buses and also handed containers with sanitizing liquid to the District Taxi Council. ​​​​​

Art & Entertainment Razie Kay uses music as a weapon to fight prejudice

By Tshifhiwa Mukwevho When he started his music career in high school, little did Razie Kay know that he would turn out to be one of the most promising newcomers in the music industry.

He was born Rudzani Khavhela from Maungani village and started singing when he was in primary school, where he excelled in music competitions. “I even got myself recorded, but just for the fun part of listening to my voice on tape and it all made some sense, even at that stage,” he said. “Some of the songs became quite popular on the school grounds, and I was put up there on the stage as the singer of the moment.”

Razie Kay is currently working on a full-length album, called Murunwa. The album features major artists such as Dr Malinga, Ck the Dj (Double Trouble), Khakhathi and P Postman.

“Murunwa focuses on the challenges and hardships that people are facing during the Covid-19 pandemic,” he explained. “It pains me that we have lost so many people since the start of the pandemic in 2020. It’s about time that I give people music to soothe them.”

“Music is a medicine to those who listen to it and get to enjoy it,” he said. “It's therapy. It's also a weapon that we

use to fight prejudices of the social systems that suppress vulnerable people.”

He is signed to Rita Dee Entertainment and has worked with giants in the VenRap genre such as MizoPhyll, Maxy Khoisan (Botswana), Vhuyie Da DJ, Makhadzi and Ramzeey.

The film is the brainchild of Smallwood films, a production company created by Tshililo Managa and Lufuno Mukhithi, with the aim of teaching teenagers in the industry the art of acting and developing them into professional stars.

Her friends Thendo, Zwivhuya and Rolivhuwa thought it would be best if they took her on an outing to a dam to help her relax.

However, things go wrong when she wants to throw herself into the dam, and one of her friends decides that they should go to the Mipainini, where she can heal her mind.

Unfortunately, they take a wrong turn. The increasingly terrified Vhuthu tries to find a way to get out, because her friends are no longer to be found.

New album for Selinah Musobi

After her disappearance from music circles for eight years, Selinah Musobi is back with a bang as she introduces her third album.

Her new single, Rothe riafana, was released a month ago, while her previous album, Nditshifhinga, also still does well in the industry.

Musobi, who hails from Madombidzha in the western parts of Louis Trichardt, says it has been a long and winding road for her to get where she is today. “I fell in love with music at a very young age.

Gospel music was always in my bones and I was obliged to do something to keep praising God,” she says.

She started her music career at the Tshilidzini Special School when she

was 12 years old. She grew up listening to famous musicians such as Rebecca Malope and Sechaba, and says she drew inspiration from them.

“Recording the album was not easy. Despite having plenty of songs readily available, I had to fund the project myself. In order to enhance my writing and composition skills, I took piano lessons. Israel Mosehla was my role model and I fell in love with gospel music because of his encouragement.”

She says that, though the album is self-marketed, it has sold many copies since its release and has been receiving a lot of airplay from different radio stations around the country. She is gaining great popularity among gospel music lovers because of her unique style, which consists of

heavy bass sounds, some chopping sounds and occasional well-positioned brass. She sings about personal experiences and what she sees happening in her vicinity.

“I also give advice here and there through my music, and by the look of things, I will continue singing this type of music, as it is proving very popular,” she says.

Musobi is also actively promoting her own music to people. Packed with nine gospel songs, the new album is selling well.

Some of the songs, she feels, have the potential of making the album a hit, such as Yehova nthangephanda, Ritshirenda yeso and the title track, Rothe riafana.

The album will soon be available at local music outlets.

Gman’s soothing voice fills the airwaves The sweet voice of Godfrey “Gman” Mavhasa, presenter of PhalaPhala FM’s educational programme, can be heard from Monday to Friday.

Mavhasa started his schooling at Tshino Primary School. He then went on to Edison Nesengani Secondary School, but moved to Tshipakoni Secondary School in 2002, where he matriculated in 2004.

In 2006, he enrolled at Univen for a degree in international relations but dropped out to seek greener pastures in Johannesburg. Once he had arrived in Gauteng, Godfrey ended up working as a waiter and did some odd jobs to supplement his income.

He returned to Vhembe in 2009 and joined Univen FM, a community radio station based at the University of Venda. “During that time, Takalani Thabo was programme manager and he believed that I could present a talk show,” Mavhasa said. While working at Univen FM, he resumed his studies at the University of Venda.

“I grew up without a father, but my mother, aunt and two uncles were always there for me,” he said. “I am the fourth-born of my mother.”

Mavhasa graduated with a BA in international relations in 2013 and joined the SABC in November that year. “I am that kind of person who is positive about every aspect of life.

There are many things I like to do, to see, and to experience.”

As an introvert, he was naturally drawn to creative writing to express his thoughts and perspectives, rather than expressing them openly.

Radio offered a wider platform for Mavhasa to express his ideas, and he increasingly dreamed of asserting himself as a key player in the media industry. It also gave him the opportunity to interact with big shots in sporting circles globally.

“What I like about the show is that it is friendly, and we interact with listeners,” he said and added that one important thing he had learnt from radio journalism was that one must always be prepared to learn. This is also true to his character. He is an informer, entertainer, and educator, but most of all the voice that accompanies many of the radio station’s programmes.

“I see life from a positive perspective, and I know from experience that people who surround themselves with positive individuals always succeed in life,” he said. “When you have fallen, they will not stare at you and say, ‘we told you that you won’t make it’. They will tell you to get back on your feet and continue the journey with dignity.”

He added: “I like reading and writing. I like to think and dream. I spend quality time at home whenever I have an opportunity. Work life can be hectic at times.” He encourages young people to put their education first.

The rise of Bernelee Juniper

Bernelee sees herself joining Miss South Africa in the next four years. “I have the potential, and I am hungry for a big achievement,” she said. “I feel like I am not far from it.”

She said that if she were to get an opportunity to work with a well-known brand as a model, she would choose any brand that promoted stability, ubuntu, love, and a healthy lifestyle and living. “I've been a model for local brands, and I accumulated a lot of skills

and knowledge from those brands,” she said. “It is surely high time that I join big, national brands. I call that growth.”

Four in court for “Valentine murder”

By Silas Nduvheni What was supposed to be a special Valentine’s Day celebration for a couple from the Makwarela Extension outside Thohoyandou on 14 February 2019, ended in tragedy when the man was shot dead.

The victim, Azwifaneli Mudau, was a well-known businessman who owned an electrical company called Rialivhuwa Electrical Engineering in the Thohoyandou CBD. According to the spokesperson for the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) in Limpopo, Mashudu Malabi-Dzhangi, Ntanganedzeni Winnie Nemaranzhe (34) had asked her husband, Azwifaneli, to go buy them two loaves of bread

and bring back pocket money for his kids. Just as he drove through the gate at home, he was shot by unknown suspects, who fled the scene with his vehicle. The Nissan 1400 was later recovered abandoned next to the Mbaleni graveyard.

Four suspects were arrested in connection with the murder and a case of conspiracy to commit murder was opened against Nemaranzhe, Tshivhangwaho Mudau (46), Tshililo Madega (31) and Takalani Nemutandani (33).

Charges of robbery with aggravating circumstances were added.

Malabi-Dzhangi said that one of the accused, Tshivhangwaho Mudau, was arrested for robbery in the Vuwani area in December of 2020. He alleged-

ly admitted that he was the one who had killed Azwifaneli Mudau, with the help of his friends Madega, Nemutandani, and Mashudu Lucky Gibisela. Gibisela was later killed, allegedly as per instruction from Nemaranzhe, because he was demanding more money after she had transferred R30 000 to Nemutandani for killing Mudau. Gibisela was killed in the Levubu area, along the R524 road, next to Matopo Lake Gardens near Ha-Mutsha village.

On Tuesday, 26 January, the Thohoyandou Magistrate’s Court postponed the case until 2 February when formal bail applications will be heard.

All four suspects remain in custody.

Principal Bopape (57) laid to rest

By Kaizer Nengovhela Bernard Mphidi Bopape (57), beloved principal of Vhangani Primary School, was laid to rest at Vhangani village on Tuesday, 26 January. He died on 19 January after a short illness at his home in Louis Trichardt.

Bopape was also a former ward councillor and executive member of the Vhembe District Municipality, as well as a member of the ANC. He is remembered as a gallant fighter and a charismatic, disciplined, and dedicated leader. Bopape’s son, Clifford Bopape, said that his father had been a pillar of strength, a motivator and a community builder in his own right, and that his death was a terrible loss to the family. “As a very wise man, we depended on him for advice and we will always remember his wisdom and love of education.”

Clifford said that, although the family was mourning,

the support from friends, community members, and various stakeholders was well received. “This clearly demonstrates that my father was a people’s person. We are very grateful to have had someone of his calibre in our family. His wisdom will live with us forever,” he said. “We lost a good man who fought for the rights of the people of the country.”

Executive Mayor of the Vhembe District Municipality Dowelani Nenguda said that Bopape´s death was a loss, not only to the family, but also to the government and community. “Government appreciates the sacrifices made by Bopape´s family, in allowing him to spend his time serving the community,” Nenguda said.

Chief Livhuwani Matsila said that the passing of Bopape was a big blow to the school and community at large. “He was loved by everyone and a pillar of strength; always ready to go the extra mile. He was a hard worker

as principal and community builder, who did his work selflessly and always ensured that the school produced good results,” Matsila said.

Give her a Gift project to help girls

By Bernard Chiguvare While the country is still battling to come to grips with the latest Covid-19 lockdown regulations, good-hearted educators are preparing for the problems that might arise when children return to school.

Rotshidzwa Valencia Maphupha (24), an education assistant at Khogonyane Primary School in Tshikwarani village in Ha-Kutama, has vowed to continue assisting girl learners with sanitary pads, so that they do not miss school lessons.

“Currently, I cannot move around a lot due to the lockdown, but I still will continue to assist the girls,” said Maphupha.

Maphupha kick-started the Give Her a Gift project last year, which is aimed at helping every girl to enjoy her right to education without any form of embarrassment caused during her menstrual cycle because she cannot afford to buy sanitary towels.

She is the founder of the Maria Maphupha Foundation, which is in partnership with Phathur Holdings. The project is looking to provide 5 000 sanitary pads for learners at Kutama Secondary School, Sinthumule Secondary School, Rotshidzwa Valencia Maphupha with some of Mmilige Secondary School, Luvhivhini Secondthe sanitary pads donated by her relatives. ary School, Manaledzi Secondary School, Madaheni Combined School, Tshiungulela Secondary School and Wilmary Christian Learning Centre.

Tropical storm Eloise causes havoc

Life became a nightmare for a single mother, Azwifaneli Netshiluvhi of Mbaleni village near the Makwarela Township, after the heavy rains and storms brought on by tropical storm Eloise.

Netshiluvhi (40), who is a domestic worker, said that she and her three children, Khathutshelo Tshisikule (20), Livhuwani (13) and Mulamuleli (12), were lucky to be alive, after one part of their two-room house started to collapse at around 06:00 on Sunday morning.

Netshiluvhi is devastated and said that everything in the collapsed room, including her children’s books, school uniforms and a bag of maize meal, were soaked and could not be used anymore. The re-

frigerator with their meat and food was also damaged.

“One of my children, Mulamuleli, was also struck on his right ear and chin by the falling bricks during the incident, and he was hospitalized in Makwarela Clinic for treatment, but later discharged.

Another child, Livhuwani, was forced to escape through a window, but luckily, she was unharmed. I thank God that my children and I are still alive,” said Netshiluvhi.

She is now appealing to the local Thulamela Municipality to build her an RDP house, because she does not feel safe to stay in the damaged house with her children anymore.

The traditional leader of Mbaleni, Chief Thithomelwi Mphaphuli, said that life for the villagers was hard after the damaging storm, and he

had experienced no pleasure when he had to rush to Netshiluvhi’s house to see that a part of her house had collapsed.

Mphaphuli said he had informed the local ward representative, who had in turn informed the ward councillor, to investigate the damage. He said that he supported Netshiluvhi’s appeal to the district municipality to do something for her and her children, because they were now living under poor conditions.

The spokesperson for the Vhembe District Municipality, Matodzi Ralushai, said that the municipality’s disaster management team was busy assessing the damage to Netshiluvhi’s house and that she would form part of the households who would be receiving serious attention.

Although no deaths or injuries were reported, tropical storm Eloise created havoc in sections of Vhembe the past weekend. Several houses and bridges were damaged and many roads in the rural areas are closed.

Residents who live in slippery mountain areas around Vhembe have parked their vehicles near the main tarred roads, because they are unable to reach their homes by car.

The bridge between Vuvha, Tshedza and Tshakhuma Tshitavhadulu washed away, and two families who were supposed to bury their loved ones had to carry the coffins of the deceased for nearly five kilometres to the graveyard because the hearse could not cross the collapsed bridge. Many people at Tshakhuma were trapped, and their houses flooded.

Ms Gundo Mutavhatsindi, who stays with her family of seven in a six-room house, said that her house, furniture, groceries and clothes were damaged by the heavy floods. She is appealing to the government to assist them with accommodation.

A resident of Tshitavhadulu in Tshakhuma said that they now had to make their way past the collapsed bridge to get to Thohoyandou and Louis Trichardt to buy necessities.

Spokesperson for the Vhembe District Municipality Matodzi Ralushai said that affected communities were now forced to use alternative roads to get to work and run daily errands. “Most of the bridges have structural problems, while others are under water,” he said.

“The municipality has sent a disaster team out to visit different areas that had been affected by the floods. We are pleading

with parents to warn their children not to swim in the dams or play near the rivers, because there are a lot of crocodiles,” Ralushai said.

He told Limpopo Mirror that many of the bridges around some parts of Vhembe had been totally washed away by the heavy rain. Some of the families have been left homeless after their mud huts collapsed, but Ralushai said that he had not received reports yet that any of these people had been injured.

Mother dies without seeing her son being freed from Swazi jail

By Bernard Chiguvare “I am really happy and blessed with these triplets, though I am struggling to feed them,” says Abigail Mandima, a Zimbabwean woman who gave birth to triplets at the Louis Trichardt Memorial hospital last month.

The triplets were named MacMillan, MacBoy and MacVivian. MacVivian is the only girl and weighed only 1.6kg at birth.

Mandima (32) is from Tshikota, living in South Africa for the past 10 years.

“I had to come to South

Africa to work for my parents, but unfortunately my husband and I are not employed now. I never expected that I was going to be blessed with triplets. My main concern is feeding them,” she says.

“My husband relies heavily on casual jobs. Once he gets paid, he has to make sure that he buys food for the kids. I love breastfeeding the kids, but it seems they are not getting enough milk from me. To make sure they get enough, I have to buy infant formula for supplementing (their diet).”

Mandima says the triplets keep her running around at night. “They usually wake up at

the same time, crying to be fed.

I have very little time to sleep,” she says. Her husband also assists her with the babies at the night, while her eldest child helps her during the day.

Asked how she is currently putting food on the table for the family, Mandima says that well-wishers drop off food and clothes for the babies.

“Because of the lockdown, my husband rarely finds casual jobs. At the moment, it is very difficult for us. It is only a matter of time before I pack my bags and head home to Zimbabwe, where I will get more assistance from my mother,” Mandima says.

We are deeply saddened by her passing and she has left a void that will be very difficult to fill in our family.”

Rudzani described his mother as a strong, kind-hearted woman who would never hurt a fly. “She was an angel and the whole family and local communities will miss her. She welcomed everyone at our home, and she would share the little she had with everyone. She was a giver who would not mind sharing her last cent with her neighbours, so that everyone would have food to eat. She taught us the principles of ubuntu, to love people and share the little we have with fellow community members. She was a great mother indeed.”

In a statement, the spokesperson of the Swaziland Solidarity Network, Lucky Lukhele, sent heartfelt condolences to Amos Mbedzi, his entire family, and the community of Makonde.

“Muofhe Mbedzi was a pillar of the Mbedzi family and her community. When it was most dangerous to participate in anti-apartheid politics, she did not hesitate to encourage her son to play a role in the liberation of our people,” reads part of the statement.

Fortunate Malindi, a local musician from Hamavhunga village in Nzhelele.

Slender Girl, released her first album, titled Mmawe ndi a vha funa, in 2016 at the tender age of 12. Last year she released another album, called Coronavirus.

Fortunate is from a disadvantaged family and the sole provider for her household of five. Her mother is unemployed, and the responsibility of providing for everyone therefore rests on her shoulders. She has managed this through her music performances, but since that had to be put on hold because of the pandemic, she has had to think outside the box and come up with new ideas to keep food on their table.

“The whole family struggles if I am not performing,” she says. “I am the breadwinner and had to keep the money from my music performance in December last year.” She used this money to buy clothes, especially school uniforms, jerseys, socks, and t-shirts for resale, and that is how she keeps everyone in her household fed.

Her advice to other young people and upcoming artists is to look for other avenues and think of new ideas to generate an income, especially, she says, during the lockdown period.

Mphiliseni Raedani surprised his maternal uncle, Mr Kanakana Jutas Mathoho of Tshiombo village, with an unusual birthday gift. While other community members spoil their loved ones with beautiful cakes and mouth-watering food, the maternal grandson decided to present his 82-year-old uncle with a “life graduation gown” marked with the words: “Master of life & Living Testimony”.

The gown was accompanied by a “graduation cap and graduation belt”.

Asked why he had decided to honour the old man in such an unusual way, the proud Raedani said: “At his ripe age, we have learnt a lot of good things from him. No-one needs to emphasize that my uncle knows the inside and outside of life. He lived his life very cleanly and he deserves the highest respect anyone can think of.”

Raedani says one of the mistakes that people made was to wait for their loved ones to pass on and then think of honouring them. “Let’s honour our loved ones with something they can see while they are still alive. Why wait for the academic institutions to honour your loved ones while you can do something to recognize them? It is a befitting honour because this old man knows what life is. Some people are honoured after they read about certain topics, but my uncle has experienced

life in all its angles. It is good to appreciate him for leading a good life and to thank the Lord for guiding him in making wise decisions that contributed to his long life.

Many people are departing from this earth at a young age, but he is very lucky to reach such an advanced age and still be strong.”

Muleba wants to fight Van Jaarsveld again

By Kaizer Nengovhela Local female boxer Ryder Muleba wants a rematch against Bonita van Jaarsveld, who beat her in December last year in a bout at Emperor’s Palace.

The fight, which was scheduled over six rounds, lasted only three. It was evident from the start that Muleba would be lucky if she survived until the end of their fight, as Van Jaarsveld was all over her. The referee came to her rescue and stopped the fight in the third round. At that stage, Van Jaarsveld was throwing killer punches at Muleba from all angles.

Van Jaarsveld approached the fight aggressively, giving her opponent no time to breathe.

The first round may have gone Muleba’s way, especially after Van Jaarsveld was felled by a

punch and the referee counted to four. Van Jaarsveld got up and continued with the fight. From then on, she just became stronger and in the third round she floored Muleba with a powerful punch.

The referee immediately stopped the fight.

Muleba complained that she had been “cheated”. She added that she needed a rematch as soon as possible. “I slipped once, and the referee didn’t count. She stopped the fight immediately.

When my opponent fell down, the referee counted to four, but for me she didn’t count,” she said.

Bonita Van Jaarsveld responded by saying she was ready, should Muleba ask for a rematch. She said it had been a pound-forpound fight, where she showed her jabbing skills and professionalism. “I have defended my title and that’s it,” she said.

Former chairman of Thulfa (60) laid to rest

Mr Tshisikule, together with some of his colleagues in the Thulfa executive committee, were suspended from taking part in football by the disciplinary committee of the Safa Vhembe Regional League. Mr Tshisikule was not happy with his suspension and he took the matter to the High Court, where the case was dismissed with cost.

The former chairman of the Thulamela Local Football Association (Thulfa), Mr Aifheli Albert Tshisikule, was buried at the Tshikweta cemetery outside Thohoyandou last Saturday. He succumbed to a long illness on Saturday, 16 January, at the age of 60.

All eyes will be on the match between Sekhukhune United and University of Pretoria, which will be played at the Makhulong Stadium in Thembisa tomorrow afternoon.

United, who bought their GladAfrica Championship franchise from Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila FC at the beginning of this season, are currently shining on top of the log. University of Pretoria, or Amatuks as they are widely known, are also one of the hot contenders for the league title.
