The busy intersection at the Excel Garage at Malamulele resembled a war zone last Friday morning, when police tried to stop a vehicle which they suspected was to be used to commit a crime.

It was cops versus robbers fighting for supremacy, but in the end the police emerged victorious.

Thohoyandou police, in a joint operation with the Malamulele and Giyani police and other units of the SAPS, successfully foiled what could have been a major heist, which could have led to a bloodbath.

The drama started at 07:00 when a vehicle with four occupants failed to stop when ordered to do so by the police at the busy intersection. Realizing that they would not get away through the heavy morning traffic, the occupants got out of the car and tried to run, while at the same

time firing at the police. The suspects did not get far as the police retaliated and stopped them in their tracks.

Within minutes of the incident, the scene was swarming with onlookers from as far as Thohoyandou, Malamulele and Giyani, who wanted to have a glimpse of the arrested suspects. The suspects lay sprawled and bloodied while police took their details, with emergency personnel giving first aid to the injured robbers. It took more than three hours for police to finish combing the scene for evidence.

The information available indicates that the group was on its way to Giyani and had planned to rob a hardware business there.

According to Limpopo police spokesperson Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi, the police, who were acting on a tip-off from their informers, were keeping surveillance on the group, which included a very dangerous, wanted criminal.

Man gets 20 years for raping 7 year old girl Suspected crime kingpin arrested A 35-year-old Beit Bridge man was slapped with an effective 20 years in jail for raping a seven-year-old girl under the guise of cleansing himself from evil spirits.

Mathias Sithole of Dulibadzimu suburb in the border town told the court that he was acting on an instruction from a traditional healer.

He was convicted on his own plea of guilty to a rape charge by regional magistrate, Mr Owen Tagu.

The prosecutor, Mr Johannes Tlou, said on an unknown date during the month of October in 2009, the victim was left in the

custody of Sithole by her mother, who had travelled to hospital for medication. Sithole took advantage of the absence of the girl’s mother and raped the victim.

It was testified that during the month of November, the girl was taken to her grandmother’s home in Chivi where she started complaining of pains in her abdomen, prompting her granny to examine her. It was discovered that the girl had been sexually abused.

The girl was later sent back to her mother in the border town, where she narrated her ordeal.

She was then taken to hospital for medical examination, after which a report was made to the police,

leading to Sithole’s arrest.

Meanwhile, another local man, who had offered his 14-year-old stepdaughter alcohol and then raped her while she was in a drunken stupor, was sentenced to an effective eight years in jail.

A 25-year-old man from Dulibadzimu suburb in the border town, pleaded not guilty to a contravening a section of the Criminal Law (Reform and Codification) Act (rape), but was convicted by regional magistrate, Mr Tagu.

He was sentenced to 10 years in jail, of which two years were conditionally suspended for five years.

New shoes for Mangilasi’s poor pupils More than 60 pupils of Thivhazwaulu Primary School at Mangilasi outside Vuwani were left with bright smiles on Tuesday. This comes after a Thohoyandou-based school uniform business handed them new pairs of shoes.

House of School Wear's director Willie Jonker and manager Ms Betty Monobe were warmly welcomed by pupils, teachers and the children’s guardians when they arrived at the school. They handed 67 pairs of new school shoes to disadvantaged pupils.

In making the presentation, Willie said there were many bad stories in this country, which is engulfed by ills. “This is one of the good stories that should be told. Let us make a difference in people’s lives as this will make a complete change in the lives of ordinary people and the country as a whole,” he said.

Jonker said he felt that the 67 minutes everyone recently dedicated to Madiba’s birthday were not enough and that people should learn to do good for others every day. He said as a business they heard about the plight of the children and decided to intervene. “Madiba was very passionate about education, and we feel the shoes will add value to these children’s education and they will not feel inferior,” he said.

He said it is not their first time to give back to the community, as they run a school-uniform competition every year where there are many prizes to be won by schools. “This is our humble contribution to these learners. We know they have many needs and we wish we could do more,” he said.

The principal of the school, Mr Alpheus Magoro, said the uniforms would enhance the performance of the learners in class. He said it would also add uniformity and discipline amongst the learners.

From page 1 Mulalo Mabaya has been on the run since escaping from a police vehicle in February 2011. He has been linked to many crimes. He is believed to have assembled a robbery syndicate.

Mulaudzi said the police tried to stop the criminals at the intersection. Realizing that it was police, the suspects did not surrender but started firing at the police, who retaliated. Apparently there was exchange of gunfire between the police and the suspected criminals.

“The robbers offered a lot of resistance, but we eventually managed to subdue them and arrested all four of the occupants of the car. We managed to recover two firearms from the suspects. We also apprehended the occupants of two other vehicles that were found at the neighbouring Xithlelani village,” he said. The occupants of the other vehicle were later

released after questioning as they could not be linked to the first group or any crime.

After the fight subsided, three suspected robbers lay seriously injured and the fourth was reported dead on arrival at the Malamulele Hospital. The dead fugitive has been identified as Sipho Shezi Sithole (19) from Umlazi Township in Durban.

Mabaya (33), who is believed to be the kingpin of the group, started his criminal career many years ago. Before his escape in February 2011, Mabaya was facing charges of house breaking, common robbery, rape, attempted murder, theft of a motor vehicle, pointing of a firearm, attempted robbery, kidnapping and possession of an unlawful firearm.

Mulaudzi said the arrest of the suspects was a relief to the police as Mabaya was one of the top ten wanted criminals in the province. “We have proved that criminals do not have anywhere

to hide in this country. We are not sitting ducks, but will fight back. This will also serve as a statement that those who are still thinking of committing crime should think twice. With our communities on our side, we shall win this war,” he said.

He thanked all officers who worked tirelessly to bring the suspects to book.

Meanwhile, the three suspects, Aluwani Singo (29), Mulalo Mabaya (33) and Sfiso Cele (28), have all been discharged from hospital where they were admitted after the shooting.

Mulaudzi said the suspects appeared at the Malamulele magistrate on Monday, charged with the pointing of a firearm at police, possession of illegal firearms, attempted murder and attempted robbery. The case was postponed to September 1. “The suspects have been remanded in custody at one of the high-security prisons in Limpopo," he added.

ing a wonderful job of taking care of the children at the centre. "Cooking for these children every day is not an easy job.

We understand the sacrifice you are making for this community," Matumba told the caregivers.

The centre also operates as a drop-in centre, as other children only drop by for food after school.

Mashau is now appealing to members of the community who can join the centre voluntarily as caregivers to contact him at 082 5107 016.

Speaking to members of the community at the township, Premjee said that he was committed to changing the lives of poor people for the better. "I won't sit and fold my hands while the community I am doing business in is suffering. I will always care for the disadvantaged," he said.

He added: "This is my way of investing back into the people I serve. It is always good to share the little you have with the people." Premjee said the donation was also his contribution to honour the legacy of former president Nelson Mandela for the sacrifices he had made for the people. He took part in the cleaning campaign at the centre as part of the 67 minutes dedicated to Madiba.

Phadagi acknowledged the dedicated and hardworking police officers who are doing their best to combat crime and lashed out at those who tarnish the image of the police services by involving themselves in criminal activities.

“We have dedicated men and women in the police services who serve the community wholeheartedly, and we commend them for that. Those who are collaborating with criminals must know that their days in the police services are

Among the issues raised during the meeting were the high rate of criminal activities at the Beit Bridge border post, long waiting periods when opening dockets at the local police station, mushrooming of unlicensed liquor outlets and the late response by police when a crime is reported.

A 69-year-old pensioner, Wilson Tshikondela, and his co-accused, Eddy Rikhotso (25) and Vincent Ndlovela (32), briefly appeared in the Waterval Regional Court on Monday, for allegedly killing Tshikoneldela’s wife, Ms Selinah Nakeng (56).

The three were arrested on July 14 for allegedly stabbing and killing Nakeng in her home at Mpheni-Vhutuwangadzebu on Sunday, July 10. All three suspects pleaded not guilty. Ms

Nakeng was stabbed several times in the head. Tshikondela testified that he was fast asleep when his wife, who was sleeping in the same room, was stabbed to death.

Thsikondela was staying in a three-roomed shack with his wife and four grandchildren. The case was postponed to August 25, while the three remained in custody. Rikhotso is a resident of the nearby Waterval Township, while Ndlovela resides at Chavani Village.

MEC donates boreholes to Tshisahulu Old Age project The chairperson of Tshisahulu Old Age Home, Mr Aron Netshifhefhe, said the two boreholes that MEC for Agriculture Ms Dipuo Letsatsi-Duba had donated to them would make a complete difference to their gardening project.

Netshifhefhe was responding after the MEC had given them two boreholes, gardening implements, fertilizer and seedlings during her visit to the project last week.

The MEC, who was accompanied by high-ranking officials from her department, the mayor of Thulamela and councillors, started their day with a courtesy visit to Chief Thivhulawi Makumbane’s royal residence before proceeding to the

project where they spent some time working there. They planted cabbages under close supervision of extension officer Calvin Netshithuthuni.

After the work session, they moved to the local football ground, where a formal programme was held.

Letsatsi-Duba was taken by surprise when the elderly presented her with a gift of Venda traditional attire, minwenda, which she put on before she addressed them. She told the gathering that she was attracted by the dedication and commitment shown by the elderly members of the project, who, against all odds, are determined to turn their lives around.

She said the elderly at the project are an

example, which, if followed by the youth, would obviate the cries for jobs and hunger and poverty in the communities. “We are greatly encouraged that, although these people are old, they have taken a decision not to sit down. They have taken it upon themselves to stand up and do something to improve their living conditions, adding to food production in the country.”

In response, Mr Aron Netshifhefhe, the chairperson of the project, said the gifts were from heaven.

“We have a big challenge here and the boreholes will make a huge difference here. Planting time has arrived and we will be using a lot of water from time to time,” he said.

No bail A farm labourer who had allegedly stabbed and killed a co-worker on one of the farms at Waterpoort, was denied bail in the Waterpoort Periodical Court last Tuesday.

Mr Gilbert Mabada (31) is facing a charge of murder after he had allegedly stabbed and killed a 22-year-old co-worker, Mr Maxwell Muthuthu. The incident happened at the Jachtkraal Farm on April 2 this year.

According to the police report, Muthuthu was drinking with friends at the farm where he worked as a farm labourer, when Mabada visited the farm that day.

Mabada then allegedly started quarreling with the victim, which resulted in a fight. Muthuthu was stabbed in the chest and he died on the scene. Mabada is a resident of Madimbi in the Niani area.

The case was postponed to September 12, when Mabada will appear before the Louis Trichardt Regional Court.

Mapungubwe to lose Heritage Status?

While Coal of Africa Limited’s (CoAL) Vele Colliery is set to continue with operations, it has come to light that the Mapungubwe National Park might loose its World Heritage status.

During the World Heritage Committee’s 35th session held in Paris at the end of June, the committee reaffirmed its concerns about the “potential adverse impact of the approved mining site”.

This follows a World Heritage Centre reactive monitoring mission that visited the Vele site, as well as the park, to consider the status of mining permissions.

Mapungubwe is about 7km from Vele's site. The mission's visit took place during November of last year, shortly after CoAL had to cease certain activities at the mine, following a Green Scorpions compliance notice. At that stage, the site was a reported 95% from complete.

Mapungubwe was listed as a site of “outstanding universal value” in 2003 because of its significance as a trove of ancient African civilisation. According to the committee, South Africa had committed to “continue halting the mining” until a joint World Heritage Centre and International Council of Monuments and Sites monitoring mission could take

place in November this year.

However, about two weeks ago, the Department of Environmental Affairs gave CoAL the go-ahead, with CoAL's CEO, Mr John Wallington, stating that Vele was expected to be up and running within six to nine months' time.

Following these new developments, the committee has urged South Africa to submit an updated report on the state of conservation of Mapungubwe by February next year for examination by their 36th session. The committee said that if mining activities were to continue, the inscription of Mapungubwe as a World Heritage site might be in danger. Inscription on the list ensures a site protection under the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization’s (UNESCO) World Heritage Convention, as well as possible financial assistance from the World Heritage Fund.

The committee was "extremely concerned" about the potential impact of the proposed mine, power station and ancillary development.

"In terms of both culture and nature,any development of this site could have far-reaching implications for the sustainability of the Limpopo Basin, could derail international agreements on the transfrontier conservation area

and could completely destroy a landscape that has the potential to contribute significantly to an understanding of the wider settlement history of Mapungubwe.

It could also pollute the Limpopo River," it said.

In addition, the committee have urged that the buffer zone, of about 100 000ha, around Mapungubwe be demarcated as a matter of urgency, seeing that there is currently no buffer zone on the east side of the park and colliery. A buffer zone was envisaged at the time of Mapungubwe’s inscription on the World Heritage List to protect the boundary within South Africa.

These boundaries have only been partly set out and have yet to be presented to the committee.

The coal seam that runs through Vele stretches to the west, through the buffer zone, and, claims the committee, has attracted other mining companies who want to apply for mining rights in the area.

According to the committee, the buffer zone includes the Venetia-Limpopo Nature Reserve, Vhembe Nature Reserve, and Limpopo Valley Game Reserve. The buffer zone has been ‘proclaimed’ but not submitted to the World Heritage Committee for approval.

15 Years in jail for setting wife alight The 35-year-old man who murdered his wife by setting her alight at Madodonga Village on New Year’s Eve last year, was sentenced to 15 years' imprisonment.

Christopher Makatu appeared in the Tshilwavhusiku Regional Court last Thursday.

He was accused of pouring paraffin over Nency Ramatsilela (32) before setting her alight. It all happened after the two had had an argument on their way home from a local tavern, where they had just celebrated the beginning of a new year.

When they arrived home, the argument escalated to the extent that they started to hit each other. It was testified that Makatu had always been swearing and threatening his wife that he would burn their house down. He then poured paraffin over his wife’s body and burned her. The incident happened shortly after 03:00.

Ramatsilela managed to escape through the window and run to the neighbours for help. The neighbours took her to the Tshilwavusiku Health Centre, and she was later transfered to the Louis Trichardt Memorial Hospital. She died, however, after two days in hospital.

Members of the community said that they were

happy with the sentence. "This will serve as a lesson to other abusive men in the community," they said.

Family demand answers from police Sydwell Manganyi (29), of Xawela Village outside Giyani, allegedly died mysteriously in the Giyani police station's holding cells on June 26, a day after he was arrested for housebreaking.

Manganyi’s mother, Mrs Ndhaheni Tsarisa Manganyi (56), said her son was brutally killed. She said that she wanted the police to tell her the truth about what had happened to her son.

She accused the police of knowing something about his death.

In a survey done in Tiyani Village, it has emerged that community members are still finding it hard to get through the day without any hassles.

Especially when it comes food, community members are still living under trying conditions.

In the bigger supermarkets, prices still fluctuate, but this doesn’t seem to be the case at the small spaza shops and cafés in and around Tiyani. The village is burdened by a large number of unemployed youths and middleaged people who can only afford the basics, such as electricity, clothes and basic foods. As for bread, not everyone can afford to buy a loaf in this village, because it is “very expensive”.

Most of them don't have a choice but to buy from a local bakery where a loaf costs R5,00. This

is still cheap when compared to the local spaza shop, where the price rises to R9.50 for a loaf of brown bread.

Members say that when electricity tariffs rise, the bread price is quick to follow at the spaza shops. According to Mdjadji Baloyi, she stopped buying bread with a brand name because it is unaffordable. “I live with three (of my) grandchildren and their unemployed mother. We rely on my old age pension. I can't afford bread because it costs too much and has never been on special at our local spaza shop.

With the money that I receive, I can only do basic things. Bread is not an essential item, therefore we don't need it.” says Baloyi.

According to Baloyi, bread from a local bakery is relatively cheap and very different from the brand products stocked by the spaza

shop. “Although it differs in taste, it is affordable. I buy bread with a brand name, especially when I am in town to buy an assortment of household foods,” she said.

Paraffin is another commodity that seems to be much cheaper in the main centres than in villages like Tiyani.

A large number of people rely on paraffin to cook, provide light and to provide warm water.

Paraffin is relatively affordable in town, compared to the local fuel station and spaza shops in the village.

One of the community members, Johanna Mkhavela, says they rely on paraffin a lot. “I don't work, and I use paraffin almost every hour, because I have to keep water warm on my paraffin stove as we have a baby in the house,” said Mkhavela.

Zimbabwean man jailed for stealing car

The prosecutor, Mr Johannes Tlou, said during the month of October 2009, the complainant, a South African ,sold his car to Rubaita, a Zimbabwean. The two agreed that the money would be deposited into the complainant’s account through a bank transfer.

The court heard that Rubaita made a fraudulent bank transfer of the money into the complainant’s account, prompting the

victim to surrender the vehicle.

Rubaita processed the vehicle’s documents and it was then registered in Zimbabwe in his name. He later sold the car for US$ 6 500 in Harare.

Soon after discovering that he had been conned, the complainant reported the matter to the South African police, who in turn teamed up with their Zimbabwean counterparts, leading to the arrest of Rubaita.

New gospel offering from “Healing Hand” Petrus Mamuhohi

They say wine tastes better when it is old and mature. This seems to be the case with Petrus Mamuhohi’s musical career when one listens to his latest offering, Healing Hand, using his stage name, Petrus Sings Gospel.

Mamuhohi, 43, the second-born of three boys and two girls, was raised in a Christian family at Ha-Mamuhohi in Nzhelelele. His late father, Maano, was a pastor and his mother, Mudzhadzhi, is a devoted Christian. Mamuhohi has been a pastor since the age of 27 when he founded and led the Good News Discipling Church.

The musical talent of Mamuhohi started showing while he was only six years old, at Sunday school. In 1995, he recorded his first album, Oh! Worship the Lord. His second album, Jesus the Lion of Judah, followed in 1999 and Holy! Holy! Is the Lord of Hosts came in 2004.

He is married to Sylvia and blessed with two girls, Mufhatutshedzwa and Mufhatutshedzi.

She said they were taking the issue of service delivery very seriously and to show their commitment, they were all going out of their offices to see what was happening outside. “We support our staff, coach them and also motivate the officers to realise the objectives of the department, and it is through these reports and visits that we assess the workers,” she said.

Man hangs himself A 35-year-old Beit Bridge man committed suicide by hanging himself from the rafters of his room, following a suspected domestic dispute with his wife.

The local police spokesperson, Supt Conrad Manhai, said the incident occurred on Sunday at around 09:00 in the Dulibadzimu suburb. The body was discovered by the man’s landlord, who then reported the matter to the police.

“The man committed suicide by hanging himself, using a power cable, which he had tied to the roafters of his room. We suspect the deceased had had a dispute with his wife, since he left a suicide note addressed to her, indicating that he wanted to give his wife the freedom that she wanted,” he said.

The deceased was identified as Mr Jokoniah Mutawani.

The body was taken to the Beit Bridge District Hospital mortuary and police suspect no foul play.

Huge community project suspended after royal dispute A multi-million-rand community project at Siyandhani Village outside Giyani has been suspended, due to a dispute between the chief and his headman.

The construction of the community offices, which were supposed to house a clinic, offices of the Department of Home Affairs and the tribal authority’s offices in the heart of the rural community, was aimed at putting an end to the need for people to walk a long way to attend a clinic or to obtain identity documents.

It is said that the Mabunda Tribal

Authority, under the leadership of Penn Ngove, objected to the construction of the project early in February this year, claiming that headman Famanda Siyandhani Chavalala had not consulted or informed them about the project. The community received settlement claims of more than R10 million from the Land Claims Commission under the leadership of headman Siyandhani earlier this year and opted for community offices.

The MEC for Local Government and Housing, Soviet Lekganyane, had also shown displeasure about the suspended project. He said it is compromised service delivery to the ordinary people. He indicated that the DeputyMinster for Rural Development would try to mediate in the issue.

Michael Mabunda from the Mabunda Royal Council, on behalf of Ngove, said the royal council had objected to the construction after Siyandhani failed to consult them. “It is not his land where he can do whatever he wants without consulting us,” he concluded.

When Siyandhani was approached for comment, he declined by saying the matter was in the hands of the Deputy-Minister.

A resident, Thomas Mathebula, has expressed the hope that the two parties will settle the matter as soon as possible. “No matter who owns the land, the community wants development,” he added.

A deeper look at sex...

The previous article dealt with the question: What’s so sacred about sex?

It became clear that sex is something that was created by God to be enjoyed within the confines of marriage, hence our focus this year is on guiding our children to abstain until such time that they commit themselves to a covenant relationship. Therefore, no doubt exists that God designed sex to be the sealing act between a man and a woman who have entered into a lifelong commitment of marriage. Covenant relationships create a “what’s mine is yours and what’s yours is mine” partnership, reminding me of a popular love song by Ringo. In essence, sex brings an element of both physical and spiritual oneness (the emotional aspect included), hence the biblical text of 1 Cor 6:16 reminds us that if you have sex with a harlot or a prostitute, your body is one with her. Surely you do not want to be emotionally indebted to more than one person when it comes to your sexual experiences, because they have a way of haunting you and tormenting you psychologically, to a point where some marriages are even broken as a result. The “oneflesh” union is meant to be shared with one person, unlike a harlot, who is joined to many partners.

Apart from the aspect of oneness in marriage, it must be pointed out at this stage that illicit sex – sex outside

of God’s intended boundaries (one partner for life) - is causing lots of unwanted deaths on our continent.

Let me point out that STDs are not the result of sex, but of illicit sex. I believe that two people married to each other can have as much sex in their lives as they want, without any fear of catching an STD, for as long as they remain faithful. Studies have indicated that one out of every two sexually active young people can expect to be infected with an STD by age 25, hence we need to educate our children to abstain and wait for the right time.

If the time spent on educating people to condomise were also spent on educating our children about sex and its aftermath, we would not only have seen the numbers of those dying of the AIDS pandemic go down, but we would have saved lots of marriages and allowed space for many couples to have safer sex in their marriages. Research has shown that the more sex you have at any given time of the day, including a morning quickie, the better the chances of keeping married couples happy and of enhancing their relationship. It is therefore critical that we impress upon our children that sex was designed by God to bond us intimately to one lifelong partner. Let’s do our part to teach our children that sex outside marriage is not the right thing to do. - Prof Derrick Mashau

Illegal Zimbabweans face deportation The South African Department of Home Affairs says it has adjudicated a total of 273 514 out of 275 762 applications for permits by Zimbabweans living in the country illegally.

The announcement comes ahead of the July 31 deadline, by which the South African government said it would issue permits to Zimbabweans who applied to legalise their stay in the country, after which it would deport those without permits.

In a statement, Home Affairs deputy-director general Mr Jackie McKay says: “With a week to go, we are firmly on track to meeting our target to conclude the adjudication of applications. In this regard, we have adjudicated 273 514 permits for Zimbabweans out of 275 762 applications."

McKay says 133 810 people have received their permits while 2 248 applications are still to be adjudicated, adding that they will be issuing out permits to those successful until August 1. “We are aware that many Zimbabwean nationals are concerned that they may not yet have received their permits. As indicated, 133 810 permits have been issued.

“As we have previously indicated, we will conclude the adjudication of the applications by 31 July 2011 and we will finalise all outstanding matters in August 2011. This will allow us sufficient time to dispatch all the required permits,” McKay says.

He adds: “The initiative to document all Zimbabwean nationals in the country has been undertaken in full consultation with the Zimbabwean authorities, including the Zimbabwean stakeholder forum members, consisting of Zimbabwean organisations operating from South Africa. We therefore continue to count on their support to ensure we can bring this project to its logical conclusion."

In April 2009, South Africa announced a moratorium on the deportation of Zimbabweans and granted them a special dispensation for one year, so that they could get documents from Zimbabwean officials based in South Africa. The documentation process was, however, later extended to 31 July 2011, following a special request from the Zimbabwean government, largely due to a backlog

in the processing of passports by the Zimbabwean authorities.

The dispensation was to allow Zimbabweans to enter and remain in South Africa without legal and proper documents and, through this dispensation, they were not subjected to deportation.

According to the International Organisation for Migration (IOM), it is estimated that there are about 1.5 million Zimbabweans living in South Africa and there are growing fears that up to 1 million could be deported as they did not apply for permits to regularise their stay.

Tracy Musandiwa, U/17 netball player of Louis Trichardt High School, has been selected as one of the top 35 players for the national team. The trials took place in Rustenburg in June this year. Tracy will attend a training camp to select the top ten U/17 netball players of South Africa.

Honour for community leaders of Tiyani In an effort to recognise community development and leadership in Tiyani Village, a local member of the community, July Ndima, has launched the Tiyani Development Campaign.

The event took place at Tiyani Village two weekends ago.

According to councillor Patrick Mazibuko, the event will help motivate the ones who are making a difference in the community. “Community members who have worked for community upliftment have been identified. These honourables received awards as recognition for their activities to develop the community and to motivate them, so that they keep on doing what they are currently doing for our community,” said Mazibuko.

The categories in which awards were made included arts and culture, sports, youth development, Christian religion and traditional leadership.

According to July Ndima, the initiative was aimed at encouraging mass participation in community development.

The festivities were enhanced by cultural dances such as Makhwaya, Xibelani and swigubu (tsonga men cultural dance). The celebrations extended to the next day, when a soccer tournament took place.

Eleven teams took part in the tournament, called the July Ndima Soccer Tournament. Rethabile FC took

top honours and beat Fighters 2-0 in the final. The winning team walked away with a floating trophy, gold medals, a soccer ball and water bottles.

Ndima mentioned that local businesspeople committed themselves to supporting the initiative.

He also acknowledged the support from the local ward councillor.

This line-up sees the comeback of one-time station manager and household brand of the 80s and the 90s, Mr Thamagana Maxwell Mojapelo, as well as the famous and revered radio and TV personality Penny Lebyane.

Max Mojapelo, popularly known as Max the Mixerboy, will be hosting the Monday to Friday midday show, Di Sa Fisha, from 12:00-14:00. Mojapelo was a multi-award-winning presenter during his tenure as a radio presenter, including the SABC Artes Award as Best Presenter for three years running from 1986-1988, the Hit City Award for Creative Presentations in 1987, the Most Friendly Deejay Award in 1989, and the Lemon Twist Best Deejay Award in 1993 & 1994.

Max was quite versatile, having presented a wide range of programmes, including the National Top 30, Jazz, Reggae as well as Gospel and Pop shows. All Nations the new winter champions Nzhelele All Nations came back from a 0-3 deficit to hold their opponents, Vhulaudzi Fire Boys, to 3-all draw in the final of the winter tournament at the Tshiozwi Grounds on Sunday. Nations were eventually crowned as the champions by winning the penalty shoot-out.

The final score was 8-7.

Fire Boys have only themselves to blame for the defeat.

They abused countless scoring opportunities. Joe Sebola, in the first instance, unleashed prema-

turely instead of moving a few steps towards the keeper.

The Nzhelele valley team should have scored in the 8th minute, but their kingpin, Vuledzani Mahosi, shot wide with only the keeper to beat.

Takalani Nemaorani of Fire Boys found the net after a rebound in the 12th minute.

David Kholopha of Fire Boys went into the referee's book for the intentional handling of the ball and the referee awarded a free kick. Fire Boys' keeper,

Thendo Thukhutha, had to stretch to the limit to save Ndivhuwo Havhi's volley.

Judas Mavhungu increased the scoreline in the 49th minute.

He received a square pass from Fhatuwani Simeli and blasted in a ground cutter from close range.

Todiseni Mamafha scored his team's third goal after he finished off a cross from Lucky Sebola, blasting it in after a scramble for the ball.The Nzhelele lads realized that it would be difficult to find the net if they continued volleying from behind and then started to cool the ball down in the middle of the park. They were reward with a goal in the 62nd minute via Vuledzani Mahosi.

Nations should have added another goal in the 64th minute, but their demon striker, Rofhiwa Ntsieni missed the chance. Nation scored their second goal in the 82nd minute through Humbulani Nembidzane. Vuledzani Mahosi complete his brace and the third goal of his team to equalise in the dying minutes.

Can Matangari United stop Green Hornets?

Six matches in the Munyamela Soccer Tournament will take place this weekend. All the matches will be played at the Muhuyu grounds.

Three matches will be played tomorrow and three on Sunday.

It remains to be seen whether Thenzheni Liverpool will continue from where they left off last weekend, when they beat Tshipako Hotspurs 4-3. They will lock horns with Vhutalu Mountain Rangers in the opening match tomorrow. It will start at 10:00. Matangari Settlers and Muhuyu Copper Stars will compete in the folowing match, and the last match for the day will be between Tshatshingo Potholes and Tshipako Hotspurs.

Sunday will see Mianzwi Green Hornet and Matangari United test each other’s strength.

Amazing victory for Mianzwi Green Hornet Mianzwi Green Hornet came back from a 0-2 deficit and beat Muhuyu XI Experience 3-2 in their Munyamela Soccer Tournament at the Muhuyu grounds on Saturday.

Experience approached the

game like a house on fire, with Hornet looking confused. Their endless efforts did not pass without reward, as they scored two goals within the first 20 minutes of the match.

Their first goal came in the

eighth minute. Their centre forward, Steven Muganada, did not make a mistake after receiving a neat pass from Pfunzo Mudzunga. Green Hornet lost shape in the middle of the park after Experience’s opening goal. Experience should have scored two more goals soon afterwards, but their strikers let them down. Their left flank, Ndamulelo Ravhura, lost possession before he could unleash inside the box.

Pfunzo Mudzunga committed a similar blunder a little later, following a beautiful pass from Steven Ramagoma. Their second goal came in the 18th minute.

Ndamulelo Ravhura was on target after beating the offside trap. XI Experience were leading 2-0 at half time.

Things turned against Experience in the second half. Feast of goals as Settlers beat Rangers There was a feast of goals when Matangari Settlers beat Vhutalu Mountain Rangers 5-4 in their Munyamela Soccer Tournament match at the Muhuyu grounds on Sunday.

Settlers meant business from the onset. Their opening goal came in the 10th minute, when Walter Mabange beat the Rangers’ keeper, Joseph Ndou, with a ground cutter. Mountain Rangers retaliated moments thereafter. It was their overlapping midfielder, Sharlein Munyamela, who made it happen.

He blasted in a rocket from the edge of the box after a brilliant pass from Lucky Gandamipfa.

Khuliso Nesthidzivhe of Rangers handled the ball within his own penalty area, and the referee awarded a penalty. Walter Mabange converted from the white spot. The goal was a motivating factor to the players of Settlers. They added another tick on the scoreboard through Badboy Muofhe in the 37th minute.

Rangers pulled one back two minutes before the teams adjourned for half time. The goal was scored

by Fhatuwani Nenzhelele.

At a graduation ceremony held at Wits University on July 19, Mr Takie Makananisa of Louis Trichardt received his Masters of Management degree. His thesis was supervised by very well-known Wits Business School Professor Susan Booysen. Makananisa graduated for his first Masters degree from the University of California (USA). He has already submitted his proposal for PhD studies, which resume early in 2012 with Wits Business School.

He will be supervised by the Economics and Public Finance professor, Mohammed Jahed.

Jahed is also the head of the Development Bank of Southern Africa. Makananisa is at present working at the Vhembe District Municipality.

Young man arrested for vandalising property True Vine church hailed for nation building The residents of Tshakhuma Village are still shocked and stunned, following an incident in the village where a 21-yearold young man vandalized his family’s property a fortnight ago.

It is alleged that the suspect, Timothy Ndivhuwo Ndou, was under the influence of alcohol and started engaging in an argument with his elder brother, Norman (23).

The argument led to a fight and his father, Mr Phalanndwa Ndou (53), interfered with the aim of solving the problem. Timothy then allegedly started quarreling inside the house.

Although other members of the

family tried to cool him down, he did not listen. He allegedly diverted his anger to the family’s property by smashing the doors, windows, and furniture and ended up vandalizing his father’s Toyota Corolla. He allegedly broke all the windows of the car, which was parked in the garage, using bricks.

The spokesperson for the Levubu police, Capt Ntshengedzeni Makondelele, confirmed the incident. He said that a case of theft and and malicious damage to property had been opened with the police against Timothy.

According to Makondelele, the suspect was arrested on Monday.

The father, Mr Ndou, who is a

traffic cop attached to the Makhado Municipality, said that the police had failed to protect him, even though he had laid a charge against his son. “He threatened to kill me and the police failed to protect me,” he said.

Ndou added: “I love my son, but the problem is that he usually causes problems when he is drunk. He makes everybody in the family uncomfortable,” said Ndou. He further stressed that if Timothy is willing to quit drinking and go to rehab, he will accept him back. The damage is estimated at R100 000. Timothy appeared in the Vuwani Magistrate Court on Monday and the case was postponed.

A well-known struggle poet, who was called a criminal against the former regime by former president Nelson Mandela in 1990, and ward councillor Abraham Manganyi, were both hailed by the Giyani-based True Vine church.

The church held the excellence awards ceremony a fortnight ago and awarded trophies to young people in the fields of dancing, singing, composing and leadership.

Comrade Xigevenga, whose real name is Nzama Jackson Chavalala, was the guest speaker, while Manganyi gave a

motivational talk.

Chavalala urged young people to have a competitive spirit, something that he says is a recipe for success. He also called on them to participate in community affairs and be members of civic bodies and political parties.

“If you join community structures, you will be able to choose right from wrong and you will not be easily manipulated into doing wrong things,” said Chavalala. His name, Xigevenga, means criminal.

When the former president visited Giyani in 1990, he said he was happy that Chavalala

was a criminal against apartheid. He has written several books and is also an awardwinning teacher at Hanyani Thomo High School.

Manganyi also hailed the church for making a contribution to nation building. “You are helping to bring about a caring society,” he said.

The head of the church, Bishop Masenyani Solomon Chavalala, said he was inspired by the words of encouragement from the popular poet and the councillor. “We are going to redouble our efforts because we now know that what we are doing is appreciated,” he said.

Several matches to be played at Peter Mokaba Stadium The newly promoted Black Leopards will play 11 of their PSL home games at the Peter Mokaba Stadium.

During a media conference last Wednesday, the executive mayor of Polokwane Municipality, Cllr Freddy Greaver announced that the stadium had secured at least 18 major soccer matches for the new season.

The stadium management and the City of Polokwane are in a celebratory mood after successfully hosting 18 top-level soccer matches, including two CAF championship matches and six Nedbank Cup fixtures last season.

In a bid to ensure that the stadium does not become a white elephant, the Polokwane Municipality entered into a partnership with Kaizer Chiefs and Supersport United. Chiefs and United will play some of their home matches at the stadium.

United and Chiefs entered into a two- and threeyear agreement respectively with the municipality.

Chiefs will play three games at the stadium, while United will play four this season. Greaver says the municipality is committed to bringing more games to the province.

"When we started last year, the intention was really to attract people. The teams are out there and they want the best possible deals. We are not intending to run it at a profit, but we also have to be responsible in that we must try as far as possible to save the course," said Greaver.

Leopards' spokesperson, Tshifhiwa Thidiela, expressed his satisfaction with the deal. "I think it is very important for us to be able to sustain our

status in the premiership. We need such partnerships, but we also want to appeal to members of the public and the media to go out there and assist us to make sure that, day in and day out, we fill the stadium, whether it is Supersport playing their home match or whether it is Kaizer Chiefs or Black Leopards," said Thidiela.

Supersport United will host Cosmos, Orlando Pirates, Kaizer Chiefs and Ajax Cape Town at the stadium.

United spokesperson David Skho-

sana said that, despite the fact that the stadium is useful, it brings back memories of the late ANC Youth League president, Peter Mokaba. "I think we are doing justice to him by making sure that his stadium is not a white elephant, but I must say that we are really grateful to the communities of Limpopo in particular," said Skhosana. The stadium will also host the African Cup of Nations qualifying game between Bafana Bafana and Sierra Leone in October.

The function resembled a feast of trophies as players and officials proudly ascended the stage to reap the rewards of their hard work. Thuso Ralushai was the recipient of the Player of the Season award. Thuso was also nominated the Players' player of the season. He went home with

the Most improved player and collected R600 and trophy.

The Top goal scorer award went to Patrick Ramufhufhi, who received R1 200 and a trophy. The Goalkeeper of the tournament award was received

by Fhatuwani Mukono, who was given R600 and a trophy.

The guest speaker, Mr George Kubayi, president of Safa-Vhembe, said soccer success did not necessarily start on the field. "Success goes hand in hand with planning.

You must set achievable goals for yourselves and you will then reap success.”

The chairperson of the team, Mr Shoni Ravele, says the awards were meant to motivate both players and officials to work hard. "They deserve to be honoured in public, because what they have done makes everyone of us proud." The Player of the Year, Thuso Ralushai, said he was Safa Vhembe president Mr George Kubayi, Thuso Ralushai (players´ very excited about the player of the season), Patrick Ramufhufhi (top goal scorer) and the award, and that he had chairperson of the Makhado Local Football asocciation, Mr Takalani worked very hard to achieve it.

One of the Vhembe-based Vodacom Promotional League clubs, Vhembe FC, has been sold.

This was confirmed by the chairman of the club, Mr Eric Muneri, early this week. Muneri refused to reveal the identity of the person who had bought the franchise of the club.

He indicated that it was premature for him to reveal the identity of the person who had bought the club’s status, saying they were still finalising the legal part of the transaction. Muneri said that they had agreed with the buyer that they would not reveal the particulars of the sale until the whole process has been finalized.

Although Muneri would not be drawn into revealing the name of the buyer, he stated that it was safe for him to say that the new owners are based within the Vhembe District. The team was promoted from the SAB League to the Vodacom Promotional League six years ago.

At that stage it was known as Masemola Diarora FC. The franchise was later sold to a Vhembe-based businessman, who renamed it Diarora FC. The late Mr Joseph “Tycoon” Mapfulagasha bought the franchise and ultimately changed the name to All Nation Shining Stars.

Khathu Nemapate is back with a bang After a short break, a local reggae artist, Khathu Nemapate, is back with a new album.

Namapate’s road to fame started about two years ago, when he released his debut album, Vhuyani hayani. The album, containing 10 songs, was favourably received by music critics. Some of the songs still fresh in music lovers' minds are Vha do ni thatha, Matshelo li nga vha lanu, Nne ndo funa inwi and the title track, Vhuyani hayani.

As a newcomer to the music industry, Nemapate could not market the album properly and its performance commercially was below par. According to him, that was a learning curve to him.

Khathu, a social worker by profession, did not look back. He went to the Burning Shack Studio in Thohoyandou again towards the end of last year and recorded his second album, Ndo tshinya mini.

It was released three weeks ago.

Khathu’s music is dedicated to all age groups.

Some of the hot songs on the new album include Mufheni tshifhinga, Ngwana walila, Nwananga o phasa and Ndo neta nga zwivhi.

Although the album is only three weeks old, it is fast becoming a hit with fans. The album was played by most local radio stations countrywide

two days after its release. Nemapate wrote all the songs himself. When asked how it was possible for him to be in the music industry while his profession as social worker is also a demanding job, Nemapate said that it was all about time management.
