Maluleke’s sentiments are confirmed in the SAPS statistics. The mayor’s younger brother, Humphrey Maluleke, who is also the family spokesperson, said since the incident the police have been very visible in the area.

“This should have been the case even before this incident happened, but because the area is not known for criminal activities, [the] police did not move around regularly,” he said.

Local residents who commented on the murder said that the suspects might be people from outside the Malamulele area as no known criminal gangs operated in the area.

The fact that no existing pattern of violent crimes exists in the area makes many believe that the killing was politically motivated. That nothing was reported stolen also adds to this suspicion.

Ms Tendani Mbulawa, one of the parents, said she was concerned about the fact that the children were not attending school, but they could do nothing about the situation because they were also worried about the safety of their children at the school.

Some disgruntled senior traditional leaders (thovheles) of the Vhavenda say they are worried about representation in terms of leadership within the Limpopo House of Traditional Leaders. During the sitting of the Limpopo House of Traditional Leaders, held at the Thulamela Municipality’s council chamber early in July this year, Hosi Pheni Ngove was elected as the chairperson of the House.

Kgoshi Rammpundu Boleu II was elected as deputy chairperson, while Kgosigadi Mmak-

gatje Masemola, Hosi Erick Chauke and Kgoshi Ko Lebogo were elected as members of the executive committee.

Hosi Ngove succeeded Kgosi Malesela Solomon Dikgale, who led the house for two terms.

Additionally, Kgosi Dikgale, Hosi Ntsanwisi, and Thovhele Rambuda were elected to represent the National House of Traditional Leaders and KhoiSan leaders.

Thovhele Ratshibvumo II Rambuda was among the dissatisfied parties who felt that the executive committee should consist of national senior leaders from different ethnic groups, such as the Tsonga, Venda and Sotho people.

Three SAPS members were seriously injured when the private vehicles they were travelling in were involved in an accident next to the Khoroni Hotel in Thohoyandou on Tuesday morning.

According to the Thohoyandou police, the officers were on their way to work. A police report states that the two vehicles in which the officers were driving, stopped at the robot at the intersection at about 07:00. Two taxis apparently came from behind and smashed into their vehicles. Popular Vhembe FM presenter dies in car accident

On Sunday (24th), the province of Limpopo woke up to the sad news of the tragic death of the well-known Vhembe FM presenter, Andani Sidogi, who had died in a car accident at 05:00 that same morning.

According to reports received, the accident happened at Mazhou, a few kilometres outside Sibasa, where Sidogi lost control over his vehicle and it capsized, killing him instantly.

The much-loved radio man had a huge following on his Vhuragane programme on Vhembe FM. He was a hustler of note and passionate about radio. According to his younger brother, Anani Sidogi, his brother had even gone so far as to establish his own online radio station, called Prefeb FM, while he had studied at Univen.

Anani said the family was still in the dark about the exact circumstances around the incident, as no one was prepared to share any information. “What we know so far is that on the day he left for work and after work went out with friends to one of the famous pubs. From there, no one knows what happened,” he said.

Tributes have started pouring in and even the Limpopo Premier’s office sent words of condolences. Two days ago, one of his friends, Ndika Tshikhakhisa, wrote on his Facebook page: “Just woke up to the sad news of the death of my brother. He was on every single one of my Instagram lives, showed me love and support FREE TIE & SHIRT from the very first day. He described him as a visionary, a manager, an organiser and a trustworthy human being whose desire to serve his community motivated him to work hard every day of his life.

Sigonde Primary’s learners return to school

By Bernard Chiguvare Learners at Sigonde Primary School in Musina were accommodated in five mobile classrooms, delivered by the Limpopo Department of Basic Education over the second school holiday.

This follows the closure of the school by the Limpopo Department of Labour and Employment on 27 May this year because of non-compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHASA).

The labour inspector who conducted the inspection prohibited the use of the Grade 4 classroom, which had cracks

over the doorpost that overlapped to the adjoining Grade 5 classroom. The Grade R, 1, 4, 5, 6 and 7 classrooms also had bats in their roofs, posing a danger to the health and safety of the children.

Although the school-governing body (SGB) is happy with the mobile classrooms provided by the education department, it is still pleading with the department for more classroom space, so that learning and teaching in the respective grades can continue separately as the combined conditions will affect their schooling.

“We are thankful for the five mobile classrooms, but we still need two more,”

said Mashudu Sigonde, chairperson of the SGB. Mr Reckson Tshishivheli, the acting provincial inspector, commended the work done by the labour inspector as the learners could at least return to school. “Our inspectors will continue to enforce compliance in all sectors, as the department does not compromise the health and safety of persons,” said Tshishivheli. He further encouraged employers to act proactively and not to wait for inspectors to close buildings down before they correct non-compliance as this disrupts the valuable education process for learners.

Mental illness can be treated with medication

By Silas Nduvheni Dr Muvhango Ramovha from the Department of Health in Vhembe has urged the parents and relatives of people living with mental illnesses to encourage their loved ones to take their medication regularly.

Ramovha was one of the guest speakers during the department’s Mental Illness Awareness Campaign, held on Wednesday, 20 July, at the Maxweta Sports Grounds in Muledane village near Thohoyandou.

“With medication, patients who suffer from mental illness can be cured. We also call on communities to treat mentally ill patients with respect because they are human beings just like us,” said Ramovha.

The event also addressed the issue of substance abuse among the young people from villages such as Muledane, Maniini and the Shayandima township. “As responsible parents, we have to take

a stand against our children’s using drugs and abusing alcohol, in order for them to be able to realise their dreams. We have to encourage our children to take their education seriously, because with education they can change their own lives and the communities they live in for the better,” Ramovha said.

Acting Thulamela Mayor Kenny Mulovhedzi said the Thulamela Local Municipality was happy to join hands with the Department of Health and the traditional leadership of Muledane village in making communities more aware of mental illness.

Mpfariseni Mavhungu, an ambassador for people living with mental illness, said she was worried about parents who gave mentally ill patients drugs instead of the proper prescribed medication. She also called on parents not to lock their mentally ill children away but to take them to the experts who can advise them on how their illness can be treated.

The Dzwerani Community Fund (DCF), a local non-profit organisation, donated 62 pairs of shoes to Dzwerani Primary School and Mahematshena Primary School pupils on Monday morning. DCF was set up specifically to enable charity work and projects which can be done around the Dzwerani community. The school shoe donation project was started in the year 2021, and last year DCF gave 61 pairs of shoes to the needy pupils at the two schools. The project uses a social media group called “Khoroni ya Dzwerani” to connect with friends and all other interested parties caring about the welfare of Dzwerani village’s residents. The group members collected and donated the shoes to the two schools to try and encourage the children to not stay away from class. After an intense two years of rehearsals and preparations, locally born brothers Prince and Charles Sigebe – officially labelled as Charles and Prince - finally released their debut extended-play (EP) album, called Vha Ima na Rine on 27 June this year.

The 24-year-old twins were born Prince Mavhungu, aka Prince Wa Miswaswo, and Charles Ḓivhani, aka Charles Wa Story. They hail from Tshamutavha in the Niani area but are now based in Gauteng. Incidentally, they are also the younger brothers of well-known hip-hop sensation Proheed.

As staunch members of the United African Apostolic Church (UAAC), the duo adopted the drum-dominated Zionist music (muzika wa tshigubu) as basis for their own music. They say that they want to take this genre, which is often underrated, especially among the youth, to new heights.

The EP contains five very powerful tracks and has since its release three weeks ago set the traditional gospel music scene ablaze. Recorded at Masana Records in Soweto by the famous DJ Davic, the beats were done by Ras Tycoon.

Hope of fresh water for VyeboomPhalama Phalaphala FM will be donating a borehole to the community of Vyeboom-Phalama in the Collins Chabane Local Municipality on Friday (29th). The handover will be broadcast live from 12:00 to 15:00.

The station ran an on-air project, in line with the Rina Ndavha (We Care) campaign, in June this year to identify an area within the Vhembe District that experiences water challenges. The identification of this area was done through participating listeners who nominated certain areas, and stated their reasons for nominating those areas. Despite being highly educated, the new leader has not shied away from his culture. In fact, during

They all came back healthy and safe.

Asked why someone in his high position would leave his cosy bed to spend nights away in the bush and the cold, Thovhele Netshimbupfe was quick to point out that, as a leader, it is his duty to encourage his subjects to love their customs and culture, and that the best way to do it is to lead by example.

“I cannot lead from the back. I have to be at the forefront in order to convince my subjects that our culture is the way to go. I love my culture so much and I will never exchange it for anything. Parents should not shy away from our traditions. I am educated, but I still adhere to my customs. As promised, we will not only focus on male circumcision but we will revive other customs as well. In May 2022 we had circumcisions for my subjects and we are also going to do the same for the royals in December 2022. We are very happy that all 719 initiates came back safe and well, thanks to the care we give to them and the help we get from the health department.

The Limpopo province had altogether 75 550 initiates, of which 62 890 were men and 12 660 women. The total number of fatalities in the province was four.

As part of the Kasi Angels Foundation’s One Million Pairs campaign, which aims to collect and donate a million pairs of school shoes to needy learners by 2025, the foundation celebrated handing over its 41 000th pair in style when they visited Mutoti Primary School on Friday, 1 July.

More than 200 disadvantaged learners went home with a broad smile on their faces and a brand-new pair of school shoes that day. The handover was done in partnership with the wellknown local business, Royal Gardens Nandoni Dam, led by businessman Mr Shandu Nesengeni. Kasi Angels was represented by its founder, Mr Gerald Nomlala.

Nomlala said he had spent three years of his schooling life without shoes. “I know what it feels like to go to school barefoot. As I grew up, I revisited my upbringing and decided to make a difference by helping children without shoes. I do not want kids to take the route that was given to me; I want them to enjoy having shoes, given to them by a stranger,” he said.

Nomlala has travelled far and wide across the country, donating shoes and other amenities to learners faced with adversity. “We are happy to announce that, with the help of our corporate sponsors and individuals, we today managed to hand over the 41 000th pair of shoes at this school. Though this is

still a drop in the ocean, we are excited that we are able to change the lives of the disadvantaged for the better. We are also looking at building 40 classrooms in needy communities.”

Royal Gardens director Mr Shandu Nesengani thanked Kasi Angels Foundation for partnering with them in donating the shoes. “Ours is to plough back to the community and especially to education. We would love to see these kids grow up and be responsible members of society. Our aim is to spread to other villages and assist where possible,” he said.

Mukhethwa Tshikwatamba, received the 41 000th pair of shoes, thanked Kasi Angels and Royal Gardens for their generosity. “We are a very poor family, and we were not sure how we could get the girl a new pair of shoes. This windfall helps a lot. We are very thankful,” she said.

The school principal, Ms Thelma Marole, said the village was overwhelmed by poverty as many parents were unemployed. “We are truly grateful as a school for this kind gesture. Thanks, Gerald and Shandu. Please come again as you have witnessed the level of need here,” she said.

According to the headman of Elim Mabobo village, Nelson Mabobo, the municipality drilled a borehole to supply water from a nearby reservoir five years ago but never completed the project.

“It breaks my heart to see our people being thirsty with unfinished water projects. The borehole was drilled years ago, but these residents have never seen even a drop of water from it. We raised our concerns to the relevant department many times, but with no results,” he said.

The VDM spokesperson, Matodzi Ralushai, said that the municipality had received their grievances. “The municipality is busy addressing the problem.

An old saying in Tshivenda goes: “Ane ani tundela, u a ni langula”. Freely translated it means: “He who feeds you, controls you.”

This thought came to mind on Friday, when I went to Xikundu village with Elmon Tshikhudo to get the latest details concerning the brutal and barbaric killing of the mayor of Collins Chabane Municipality, Mr Moses “Big Moss” Maluleke.

To be precise, we were told that the premier of Limpopo, Mr Stanley Mathabatha, would arrive at noon. At noon, we were told he would arrive at 14:00.

The group of journalists present started murmuring that the premier did not respect time, as if they did not know that lying comes naturally for most politicians. But when the honourable premier eventually arrived at approximately 15:45, journalists were seen running helter-skelter to prepare cameras, recording equipment and notebooks.

Suddenly, none of the journalists complained about waiting for more than four hours outside without receiving so much as an apology.

Even when interviewing Mathabatha, none of them touched on the issue of time or asked him why he had not bothered to inform members of the community that he first had to honour other engagements.

But sadly, some, if not most journalists, are more praise singers of politicians than they are fearless watchdogs who will expose the truth, no matter what it takes. Very few of them have the guts to confront the politicians.

Since the dawn of democra-

cy in 1994, most journalists in the country at large, and in the Vhembe District in particular, metamorphosed into praise singers. Very quickly they lost their independence and objectivity. The ruling party executed its plan to control the media industry with the agility of a cat and the brutality of a lion.

The powers that be started off by luring journalists into its ranks as public-relations officers (PROs). More than 50% of PROs in Limpopo are former journalists, mainly from the SABC, while very few are from local newspapers and community radio stations.

This step paved the way for the remaining journalists to be captured by their former colleagues.

What is truly shocking is to see how half-truths are coined and brainstormed by PROs in government offices. Those who have been turned into praise singers are then just given

However, feeding “good” stories to journalists is often not enough. A system is also in place at many municipalities and government institutions where the “negative” [read critical] journalists get “punished”. If you dare write

anything negative about the municipality, you can forget about getting a quick response from the spokesperson from then on. That person will simply never be available or will block your calls.

For centuries, the media have been known to perform three traditional functions.

They must inform, they must educate, and they must entertain. Journalists must be accountable to the public, whether that means the readers of a newspaper, the watchers of a television channel or the listeners of a radio station. They should not be praise singers.

In 2017, a retired veteran Cameroonian journalist, Guy Roger Eva, rebuked journalists who spent time singing praise songs about politicians rather than telling the truth.

He had spent more than 20 years working for government media, so he knew what was happening behind the scenes.

Eva said that for journalists to spend weekends attending private parties with politicians, asking for transport money from politicians and asking for transport from people who needed their stories to be reported was simply wrong.

Journalists are also finding their fingers trapped in the cookie jar, because of newsletter tenders. How many journalists in the Vhembe District can raise their hands and say they have never been involved in government newsletter tenders? How, then, can they report the truth about scandals involving the hands that feed them?

This brings us back to what the Vhavenda have been saying for decades: “He who feeds you, controls you.”

In spite of the strict limits that were set during that time, which at one point completely banned these people from travelling back and forth, many of them had had no other option but to defy these regulations, sneaking through illegal (and often dangerous) ports of entry between the two countries, so that they could continue with

their trades on this side. They said this was not because they refused to abide by the laws set out but out of necessity. For these people, it had been (and still is) a matter of survival.

We hope that we can do this more frequently as it empowers us with much-needed information to make our businesses grow,” she said.

During the conference, farmers had an opportunity to raise their challenges and received feedback from the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development and various other service providers.

Augustine Nethononda, an emerging farmer from the Musina area, along with 169 other local farmers, changed their overalls and heavy-duty boots for formal wear to attend the Musina Farmers Conference, held at Tshipise Forever Resort outside Musina, from last Tuesday to Thursday (19 to 21 July).

The conference, organised by the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, was held under the theme “sustainable agricultural production under hard economic and social circumstances”. The aim of the conference was to capacitate local farmers by exposing them to farming support services such as funding, sustainable market analysts and linking them with various service providers.

Mr Jethro Nowata, chief director of the Limpopo Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, was highly

impressed by the huge turnout.

“The fact that you came here in large numbers clearly demonstrates that you are serious about self-development and expanding your farming business.

This is the perfect platform for all of us to network,” he said.

Nowata said the time had come for farmers to be taken seriously as they rendered essential services to the communities. “Farmers are very important because, without them, people would starve.

Madridtas win the Podoski U/15 cup

By Victor Mukwevho Tshilamba Madridtas won the Podoski U/ 15 Tournament when they beat Makonde FC 3-1 at Khubvi Grounds on Sunday, 16 July.

What was quite striking about the tournament was to see the determination of the young players. None of the teams have sponsors, with very few of the youngsters arriving to play with proper soccer gear. Many of the players either played without soccer boots or wore oversized hand-me-downs.

Makonde FC took the game to their opponents from the first minute, creating several scoring opportunities from different angles, but their strikers missed the target. The main culprit was Langanani Mankhili, who had a good game, but missed several sitters in front of the goal posts. The score was 0-0 at the break.

Makonde FC continued their dominance in the second half, but their undoing was their trying to dribble the ball all the way to the goal-

posts. Even though they were under pressure, Tshilamba Madridtas drew first blood when Ndinae Kwinda collected a loose ball on the left flank, dribbled past two defenders before passing the ball to Fhumulani Munzhelele, who squeezed the ball into the net in the 65th minute.

They increased the margin through Tsiko Sengani, who tapped the ball into the net from close range. Langanani Mankhili, who missed clear scoring chances in the first half, received a through ball from the midfield and beat the keeper with a ground cutter.

Ndinae Kwinda put the final nail into Makonde FC’s coffin when he scored the third goal in the dying minutes of the game.

Clash between Stars and Two for Joy abandoned in dying minutes

The match at the Shayandima School Grounds on Sunday was played under protest.

Two for Joy lodged a protest with the referee, Mr Owen Nengwenani, before the start of the game. In their protest, the visitors from the Nzhelele Valley were alleging that one of the players of Morning Stars, namely Adivhaho Mphigalale, was not properly registered with the team.

Maindis ready to demolish UWC

As part of preparations for the upcoming National University Sport of South Africa (USSA) Badminton tournament in Cape Town from 6 to 9 August, the University of Venda (Univen) consulted with Jimmy Scheepers and Benjamin de Waal from the Zoutpansberg Badminton Club to assist with skills and technique training. On 23 July, both Jimmy (who is also chairman of Limpopo Badminton) and Benjamin (one of the province’s top players) took the players through all the basic footwork, shots, and rules of badminton during a training session at Univen’s badminton courts. Natascha Louw, the sports officer for competitive sport at Univen, expressed her gratitude towards both Jimmy and Benjamin for taking time out of their busy schedules to lend a hand during this training session. The 13-year-old Vhuluhawe Nemutandani, a learner at the Emmanuel Christian School, bravely attempted his first Parkrun in the Louis Trichardt Indigenous Tree Park on Saturday. The little “Blade Runner”, as he is affectionately called, is also the junior ambassador in Limpopo for the Jumping Kids and Isability programmes. Vhuluhawe put in a brave effort to finish the 5km route on Saturday, but was forced to stop after 2,5km. He had to sit down and remove one of his blades to relieve the pain. However, he is motivated to return and finish the full course next time. Parkruns, of which the Louis Trichardt Parkrun is part, are free community events, open to everyone and run entirely by volunteers. The Louis Trichardt parkrun is held every Saturday at 08:00 in the winter months and 07:00 in summer in the park next to the tourism info centre on the corner of Songozwi Street and the N1. Victory for Berea FC in Vhembe Cup

By Frank Mavhungu Berea FC have good reason to rejoice. They managed to secure a place in the quarter-final stage of the Vhembe Super Cup tournament after beating Igwe FC 6-5 in their opening match, played at the Rabali Stadium on Sunday.

Berea appeared unprepared in the first 10 minutes of the game. At that stage, the youthful Igwe’s midfielders were doing as they liked in the middle of the park. Their efforts paid dividends in the 10th minute when Igwe’s left winger, Mbulaheni Netshituni, gave the ball the final touch after a scramble within the box.

The goal seemed to be a wakeup call to the Zwigodini side. They regrouped from behind, launching some promising attacks as they approached Igwe’s danger area. Their bulldozer striker, Edwin Ramphabana, was brought down just outside the box in the 18th minute. The team’s captain, Dakalo Ratshitanga, beat the keeper with a half volley from the free kick.

Berea lost control of the game after scoring their equalising goal. They were severely punished for that. The Musina side reclaimed the lead in the

34th minute when their slender striker, Ismael Mokoena, beat the keeper with a close-range strike, following a neat pass from Mutshutshu Mudau.

Thulamela Local Football Association (Thulfa) will be under the chairmanship of Mr Rudzani Mulaudzi for the next four years. He was elected as the new chairperson of the association during Thulfa’s elective congress held at the Thulamela Library last Saturday.

The new chairperson is a professional football referee.

Mr David Khakhu was elected to the position of first deputy chairperson. The position of second deputy chairperson is now held by Mr Eric Munyai.

Mr Munyai is a semi-pro-

fessional football referee.

He doubles up as a referees’ instructor.

Ms Mavis Mulibana was elected to the position of third deputy chairperson. Ms Mulibana is not a new name in local football circles. She is the current chairperson of one of the SAB League sides, Tshimuthe FC. Mr Aaron Tlou is the new general secretary for the association, while the position of treasurer is now being held by Mr Eric Makungo.

In his welcome remarks, the former chairperson of the association, Mr Ephraim Singo, revealed that the association was in a good financial posi-

tion. He said that the previous executive committee had recently signed sponsorship deals with two companies, N Rand Funeral Services and Mpho Mathoho Electrical Services.

When delivering his first speech as chairperson, Mr Rudzani Mulaudzi appealed to the clubs that had terminated their membership with the association for whatever reason over the past years to reconsider their decisions. He stressed the fact that serving as an executive committee member for an amateur football association was voluntary work.

Thulfa teams gear up for CoC games

By Frank Mavhungu Although most of the affiliates of the Thulamela Local Football Association (Thulfa) are left with five matches to complete their league programme for the current season, some of them are already sure of a place in the Champ-of-Champs (CoC) tournament. The champions from each of the 10 streams will compete in the CoC at the end of the season to determine the overall champion.

The fight for promotion is between Lukalo Hot Aces and Mubvumoni FC in Stream A. Hot Aces have deposited 61 points into their league account to date, while Mubvumoni have 51.

Mbahe Freedom Rebels have already secured a place in the annual event. They are shining on top of Stream B. The same applies to Maniini Real Madrid FC. Only some serious bad

fortune can stop Real Madrid from lifting the trophy at the end of the season. They are leading the pack in Stream C with 59 points, nine ahead of Makhuvha Flying Stars, with only two matches left.

Dzwerani United Brothers must win at least two of their remaining five matches to be sure of a place in the CoC. United Brothers are the Stream D pace setters with 60 points, 12 ahead of Lwamondo Baboon FC. The race for promotion is between Napoli FC and Ngovhela Back Side in Stream E. Mavhola Newcastle and Makhuvha Up The Ants are in a neck-and-neck situation in Stream F. Newcastle have 52 points, while Makhuvha are two points behind with a match in hand.

Makonde FC and Maraxwe Happy Boys are close contenders for the league title in Stream G. The race for

promotion is still wide open in Stream H. Tshaanda Northern Vultures and Tshixwadza FC are in the first two positions with 49 and 43 points respectively. Tshixwadza have a match in hand.

Tshanzhe Pre-Mighty FC have already started with their preparations for a new life in the higher division. They are leading the pack in Stream I with 57 points, 20 ahead of Sambandou Seven Hunters.

The champions of Stream J are still undecided. Khalavha Young Chiefs and Tshikombani Real Kings are in the first two positions with 39 points each.

The overall champions will take home R20 000. The runners-up will receive R15 000, while the third- and fourthplaced sides will be presented with R12 500 and R11 500 respectively. All the champions from the 10 streams will be promoted to the Safa Vhembe Regional League.

Malamulele stadium ready to host Black Leopards Mashamba offers a feast of goals in opening Vhembe Super Cup match

Well-known local football referee Victor Hlungwane has retired. Hlungwane called it a day at the end of June this year, joining referee Philip Tinyani, who has also retired. “I’m retiring because I got two hamstring injuries this year and don’t think I will pass the fitness test next year. It is better to retire while you are still on top.

That’s the decision I made and I’m happy with my achievements over the years,” he said. Safa’s chief executive officer, Adv Sello Motlanthe, wished both referees well. “Safa would like to thank these two for their professionalism and dedication to the game. I hope that Safa can continue to utilise their wealth of experience to produce the future generations of referees,” Motlanthe said.

Soccer Academy did not waste any time after the referee blew the whistle to start the match.

Instead, they took the game to their opponents, with their strikers giving Mukula’s defenders no time to breathe.

They claimed the lead in the 15th minute when Pontso Ramasobana forced his way through the defence of Fast XI and unleashed a ground cutter from inside the box. The wheel of fortune turned against Mukula again in the 28th minute. Emmanuel Rambau, who scored a hat trick in the game, hit the target with a half volley from the edge of the box.

Soccer Academy were three goals up when the referee blew the half-time whistle. This after they had scored the third via Emmanuel Rambau in the 39th minute.

Realising that Soccer Academy were unstoppable, Fast XI tried to neutralise them with dangerous tackles. The situation was normalised after the referee reprimanded one of their key players, Lufuno Ravhutsi, with a card in the 54th minute.

Soccer Academy put the matter beyond doubt when Phodzo Rathanya went loose from the right corner and sent the keeper the wrong way with a close-range grass cutter.

Both sides effected some changes later in the game, but that did not change the complexion of the game as Soccer Academy continued to dictate terms in the middle of the park.

Mukula’s solitary goal came via Vhone Mbedzi, who headed home after a corner kick taken by Mashudu Musetsho.

Soccer Academy scored the fifth goal in the 76th minute. Mukhethwa Raswiswi, who came on as a substitute for Pfano Ramusilei, beat the offside trap and scored an easy goal. Emmanuel Rambau completed his hat trick with a bicycle kick in the dying minutes of the game.

By Kaizer Nengovhela Black Leopards FC will be able to play their home matches at the newly revamped Malamulele Stadium when the 2022/23 soccer season starts in September.

Leopards hosted their 2021/22 matches at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane, following a fallout with the Thulamela Municipality (who owns the Thohoyandou Stadium) over the R27 000-per-match fee charged to utilise the facility.

Leopards have moved their training programme to Saselamani, an area that falls under the Collins Chabane Municipality, and will also see their matches being played at

the Malamulele Stadium.

Senior PSL official Prof Ronnie Schloss visited the stadium early in January this year and asked the municipality to fix some of the areas at the stadium. The dressing rooms and the pitch were not in good condition.

Schloss visited the stadium again for inspection on 19 July to assess the progress and said he was confident that the stadium would meet all the necessary requirements after the work had been completed.

“The last time I was there for a preliminary inspection‚ the pitch was still not playable, but it will be improved and ready‚” he said.

He was confident that the facilities would be up to standard when the new season started. “We are very happy to welcome Black Leopards to their new home ground,” he said. Mathye said the stadium, after the construction of the new pavilion, could accommodate 15 000 spectators. He said that the municipality planned to improve the stadium even more in the coming years.

Black Leopards’ chairman, Mr David Thidiela, said his team was very excited about having their own home ground. He thanked the municipality for the good work done.
