Angry Tshikota residents set hostel on fire Angry residents of Tshikota came out in large numbers and set a hostel alight because the Makhado Municipality ignored the presence of “illegal immigrants and criminals” in the unused hostel block.

The incident that shocked the whole of the Makhado area and surrounding villages happened at around 16:00 on Tuesday.

Residents, who had barricaded the road in front the hostel and were busy smashing windows and fuelling the fire, were heard speaking loudly that the hostel harboured criminals who had been terrorising the locals for a long time.

“We told the municipality many times to give the rooms in the hostel to poor locals who have nowhere to live, or else demolish the hostel blocks because Zimbabwean criminals use the place,” said a resident. “You can't even send a child to the spaza shop for fear of these thugs.

They mug us and run into the dark hostel.

Who knows what will happen if you follow them into the dark?”

The Makhado Fire Brigade arrived at the scene, but the women and youths warned them not to extinguish the flames.

“If you put out the fire, you won't get out

of the hostel yard,” warned infuriated residents. “We want the hostel to burn to ashes, so that these criminals will have nowhere to hide.”

While residents were engaged in burning the hostel, several hostel dwellers were seen near their belongings at the back of the hostel. “We steal from nobody, and this is the only place I call home ever since I arrived in South Africa some three years ago,” said Nkosinathi Dube (38), who originally comes from Gwanda in Zimbabwe. Dube maintains that, for survival, he scouts scrap matter around town, which he then sells to scrapyard dealers for cash.

Terrance Shuro (23) and Joseph Mugwabana (51) echoed Dube's sentiments. “I am a Muvenda of Ha-Mandiwana in Nzhelele,” explained Mugwabana. “I am no criminal. I work in town and sleep here because I can't afford to go home every day.”

At around 19:35, more hostel dwellers returned. Some spoke Shona, while others were heard speaking about their plight in XiTsonga and Tshivenda. “My home is in Malamulele. Maybe there are thieves among us here, but I am not one,” said another man, who didn't wish to disclose

his name.

Cllr Abraham du Plooy (Ward 21) indicated that the municipality was aware of the problematic hostel issue in Tshikota, where there are also 130 useless RDP houses which are the result of a failed project. “This is a provincial issue, and Coghsta is reportedly busy dealing with the case,” said Du Plooy.

“However, on the issue of the said criminals, all I can say is that I brought the problem to the municipality's attention after my many visits to the hostel. I always find covers of freshly ripped copper cables strewn everywhere, which shows that these cables were stolen somewhere around town.”

Provincial police's spokesperson Col Ronèl Otto confirmed the incident and said that residents went on the rampage after rumours that a Zimbabwean male had broken into and stolen from a spaza shop.

“We are still gathering more information on this incident,” Otto said.

NGOs unite in information drive for HIV-Aids Day In celebration of International World Aids Day on 1 December, several NGOs in the Vhembe district will host events to create awareness about the disease.

This year’s theme is Zero new infections, zero discrimination and zero Aids-related deaths.

The Munna ndi nnyi (Who is the real man) men’s forum will host an event at Lwamondo on Tuesday, aiming to encourage people to get tested and start taking treatment. According to the organization’s managing director, Mr Bardwell Mufunwaini, it was established that the rate of HIV infections in the area is on the rise. “Our people need to be told that Aids is here. We all need to work together to prevent Aids-related deaths,” he said According to Mafunwaini, women regularly get tested, but men fear to get tested.

“Men don’t really accept that they have this disease. They don’t take treatment, and they will leave their children behind

suffering,” he said. He also mentioned that members of his forum had helped people to live positively, even if they were infected.

The Treatment Action Campaign (TAC) will be expanding the message of treatment to various communities. The provincial co-ordinator, Mr Amukelani Maluleke, said their organisation was left out of the provincial government’s preparatory plan for the event. They were not consulted as to where the event would be, he added.

However, that has not stopped the TAC from preparing for the day and to endeavour to help vulnerable communities. “It is not just a matter of commemorating this day; we need to spread information to the people. We will continue to encourage people to get tested and to take treatment,” he said.

Government clinics in the province are facing a serious lack of medicine he said.

Waterval theft case again postponed

The cases against a 50-year-old police lieutenant were postponed for further investigations when he appeared in the Waterval and Vuwani Magistrate's Court respectively the past week.

Lt Joseph Mudau, who is attached to the Waterval SAPS, appeared in the Waterval Magistrate's Court last Thursday in connection with theft, after eight water tanks and two water pumps were allegedly found at his home. The water tanks were reported stolen from the residential places and the Evangelical Presbyterian Church in the Mashau area when recent heavy rains prohibited people from returning to their houses.

On Thursday, Mudau's case was postponed to 14 February 2014 and he was released on warning.

Even though the tanks were allegedly stolen from the Mashau area, the cases of theft were opened at the Levubu and Waterval police stations because of the dermacation on the policing areas, said the spokesperson for the Levubu police, W/O Solly Mukhola. “For the case falling in the Levubu policing area, Mashau and his co-accused, Mani Thenga (30), appeared in the Vuwani Magistrate's Court last Friday and the case was postponed to 23 December,” Mukhola said.

Mudau is out on bail, but Thenga remains in custody.

Market stall project for Nancefield Ms Avhatakali Mudau is an unemployed single mother of four children who survives by selling cooked food to local community members. She plies her trade under a tree at Musina Nancefield.

During rainy or windy days, she does not get an income because she does not have a proper place to prepare and sell her food to her customers. This middle-aged woman hopes that her life will change for good after the Musina Municipality started with the construction of a market place in Ward 5.

Situated in Nancefield Ext 8, the R1,2 million project will comprise 30 market stalls equipped with ablution facil-

ities.

Municipal communications manager Wilson Dzebu says the market place will be paved to make sure that the beneficiaries work in a dust-free and healthy environment. “We will also erect palisade fencing around the market place because it is important for our people to work in a secure environment.

We will make the area more open and accessible for all that work or shop at the market. This is one of the projects that local people requested during ward meetings and we are implementing it, based on the will of the people.

This comes after public consultation, by working with resi-

dents and different stakeholders within Ward 5 of the Musina Municipality.”

He said the public consultation was aimed at gathering the thoughts of those who deal with local economic development on a regular basis, to help the council ensure that the new market place was fit for purpose while recreating the history that Musina was renowned for and proud of.

He added: “It is hoped that not only will the new market layout create a renewed vigor for Ward 5 of the Musina Municipality by attracting more market traders and shoppers, but it will also help to bring about new investment.”

In court for illegal possession of explosives “Damaged wires will kill us” - residents A Zimbabwean man travelling in a taxi from Zimbabwe to South Africa was arrested at Beit Bridge Border Post in the early hours of Thursday morn-

ing, 21 November, after several pieces of explosives were found in his possession.

The taxi he was travelling in was stopped for a routine search

of all passengers and a sniffer dog of the Beit Bridge K9 Unit reacted positively to the luggage of the man. During a thorough search of his luggage, 30 pieces of explosives, without detonators, were discovered.

The suspect, Nkosintahi Ndlovu, was arrested and appeared in the Musina Magistrate's Court for the illegal possession of explosives.

His case was postponed to 28 November for further investigation.

Gospel star auditions this weekend The Rofhiwa Gospel Star search, a competition which seeks to unearth new gospel talent, will hold auditions tomorrow (Saturday) and Sunday.

Last year, the competition produced Thabelo Thavhanyedza, who won the first prize and went on to record a smash album, Kha a rendwe Yesu, which took all by surprise by earning her a nomination for the coveted Tshima awards this year.

The founder of the talent search, Rofhiwa Manyaga, said this year's competition would be even better, with more prizes for

the winners. He said more stakeholders, including the Thulamela Municipality, had come onboard.

"We have done our homework.

Last year’s competition might have looked big to others, but we detected some cracks and this time around, we have corrected all the mistakes. We are confident that this year will be the beginning of a new chapter in the competition,” he added.

It is almost three weeks after devastating winds have ripped through most parts of Vhembe, leaving a trail of massive destruction of property and infrastructure in the area.

One such area that was adversely affected is Maniini K, just outside Thohoyandou.

A big tree fell on some electricity lines and the live wires have become a threat to the community, who fear that lives will be lost if they are not removed immediately.

Residents claim that they have been to the electricity supplier, Eskom, on several occasions but have not found redress in the matter.

Cllr Maria Ramanala, who stays in the area, said they were very worried about the safety of people in the area.

“We fail to understand why

they are not assisting us because Eskom's offices are just a stone’s throw from here. I have been personally engaging with Eskom, but nothing is happening and this is making residents very angry. They feel Eskom does not care about their lives and those of their children,” said Ramanala.

Eskom spokesperson in the area Mr Thiofhi Ratshitanga said the problem had been resolved.

"We received the complaint from the residents and we did not waste time and attended to it. It is now resolved, “he said.

At the time of going to press, residents were still complaining that the electricity poles were still on the ground, which still posed a danger to the residents.

Safety awareness campaign at Musina

Three poor Chauke children from Botsoleni village near Mhinga received wonderful end-ofyear gifts a fortnight ago. Xihluke (6), Mpfuxeto (13) and Caswell (23) were left destitute when both their parents died in 2012. They live in dilapidated mud huts, which collapsed during the heavy floods earlier this year. Caswell, the elder brother was charged with taking care of the other children, although he was not working. He relied on begging for food. The Thohoyandou Correctional Area, in conjunction with the Limpopo-based SABC radio station, Munghana Lo Nene (MLFM), heard about their miserable situation and decided to build a three-roomed house for them in July this year. Last Tuesday, they presented the orphans with food parcels and school uniforms. Area Commissioner Dir Richard Malebane urged them to take education seriously, so that they might defeat poverty and unemployment. Musina kicked off the festive season with a successful safety awareness campaign which was held at Malale Community Hall last week.

The campaign’s main focus was to increase awareness about the risks and dangers of stray animals because a high number of accidents is caused by stray animals in the area. The event was a joint effort by Musina Municipality and the Vhembe District Municipality.

During the event, farmers were advised to look after their livestock to prevent them from wandering along the roadside.

Local people were also advised to refrain from cutting fences along the roads as this leads to the destruction of barriers that prevent animals from wandering across the road.

The manager of traffic services at Musina Municipality, Mr Daniel Nembambula, said that, besides stray animals, birds were also a risk to drivers in the roads.

“Eagles and other birdlife may feed on the carcasses of previously-struck animals on the roadway and be a hazard to approaching

“The Satma award inspires me”- singer Singer Junior Sikheli (30) of Mangondi, a virtually unknown artist, surprised everyone when, after being pitted against seasoned musicians like Zozo and Rendani N, he scooped the honours during the recent Satma awards.

Sikheli, who rose to prominence through the release of his album, Ladzani Shango, last year said he could not believe his ears when he was announced the winner of the Best Venda Album category.

Sikheli, who was also nominated for the Tshima Awards, said God’s blessings were falling like rain on him.

The mood was jubilant on Sunday at the Shayandima Zion Apostolic Church when children of the Children Ministry were given a special treat and new T-shirts as uniforms. The coordinator of the project, Evangelist Nelson Muntswu, said the Tt-shirts would give the children an identity and make them distinct from the other children. “Children are a gift from God and are the future leaders of this church and the country. They need to be nurtured and looked after from an early age," he added. The manager of health promotion in the Department of Health in Vhembe, Ms Tshinakaho Mulaudzi, urged parents not to give up on their children. “Parents have a critical role to play in the moulding of children. The problem they have is that they give up easily on their children. Children might do all sort of wrong things.

“Young women always hide behind poverty when engaging in sexual activities with various men. When you are unemployed, you are less concerned about your body,” said Ms Tinyiko Kanyane, Vhembe Regional Programme Manager for LoveLife.

A meeting recently took place at the Mtititi Community Hall in Malamulele, and young women gathered to discuss issues affecting women in their daily lives. The event was organised by Vhembe District Municipality.

Kanyane further indicated that peer group pressure and low self-esteem affect the behaviour of young women and they tend to live by the wishes of their friends.

Ms Maggy Hlungwani of the University of Venda said that young women were expected to know themselves, because the prevalence of HIV/Aids was extremely high among people between the ages of 15 to 25 years. “When you are propositioned, you must first check what this man needs before you accept his proposal. Don’t engage in sexual intercourse before both of you know your HIV status. If the man refuses to be tested, then avoid that person,” she added.

She emphasised that to “get HIV/Aids from a stranger is very painful. We are the next generation, let’s wait patiently. Your faithful husband is available, so don’t rush,” said Hlungwani.

Cllr Rapson Rambuwani, chairperson of special programmes of the Vhembe District Municipality, indicated that women are the mothers of the nation and it is proper for them to plan their future.

“Our country needs intelligent women to take up leadership positions in order to liberate other women from the bondage of poverty,” said Rambuwani.

Damani Primary receives solar panels Damani Primary School in the rural Damani village, which received uniforms and solar lamps for the school’s 153 pupils earlier this year, received panels and lights for the whole school.

Recently, the school was a hive of activity when a solar expert installed the first solar panel and the lights. He showed members of the community how to do the installation step by step and the community will take over the installation.

“This is Phase 2 of the project. We promised the school solar panels that would benefit the whole community as they will use the hall for evening activities and pupils from surrounding high schools can study during the evening at the school. We are also greatly encouraged to learn that learning and

results have improved tremendously as a result of the first donation,” said Thembi Moja, coordinator of the project. The project’s director in Limpopo, Ms Salphina Themeli, said she was happy that parents are taking care of the uniforms. “We are very proud of the people of Damani who are showing responsibility by owning the project and making sure it succeeds,” she said.

Ms Takalani Mudau, the principal, said the conditions had changed threefold since the introduction of the sponsorship. “Pupils have developed a sense of confidence and their performance has improved tremendously. Our hall is now ready for use by the community and high school pupils can study in the evening because of the new lights.”

Volunteer ladies keep Tshikota clean A group of women from Tshikota has embarked on a project of keeping the location clean, and they call their project the Tshikota Community Cleaning Campaign.

The project started off as a one-day campaign on 24 August, when at least 24 ladies teamed up for the purpose of cleaning the location and enjoying a pleasant Heritage Day (24 August).

“Just like any other residential area, there were lot of disposable nappies and other nauseating litter on the sides of our roads and streets,” said team leader Ms Martha Mugwena (53). “So, on Heritage Day, a large group of women volunteered in a community-service campaign to rid our place rid of litter.'

After the cleaning, the ladies realised how the township was clean and then they decided to turn a one-day campaign into an

on-going project.

The project is into its third month now. "All of us are jobless, and we feel that it is better to do volunteer work in our location than to sit inside our houses all day long, doing nothing," said Mugwena.

All these ladies are mothers and grandmothers and some of their children attend the local Masedi Combined School.

“On Fridays we clean the yard, classrooms and toilets at Masedi Combined School,” Mugwena explained.

“We've already asked the principal to allow us to use the school yard to grow vegetables, which will be used to supplement the learners' daily diet.”

The team also cleans other parts of the location, such as the streets and main roads, and cuts down the invading bushes and marshlands on Mondays, Tues-

days, Wednesdays and Thursdays.

“Now that the rainy season is upon us, viruses which can cause diseases such as diarrhoea, typhoid fever, polio and malaria develop in these wet areas, if we are not doing anything to combat them,” added another member of the cleaning group, Ms Mihloti Ramapulana (37).

The ladies say that they have just realised that there are men who live alone in their houses and also the elderly who have no relatives to assist them on a daily basis. “We will be visiting these people to offer them free cleaning services,” said Mugwena. “Our only challenge, at this stage, is a lack of cleaning materials. If we could have cleaning materials, we could do more.”

They need material such as rakes, gloves, detergent and uniforms for the entire team.

The mayor of the Makhado Municipality, Cllr David Mutavhatsindi, officially handed over the completed Waterval Township street-surfacing project last Thursday. “It is a testimony that we are delivering quality services to all our people,” he said, adding that the municipality was committed to taking services to all its people. “We are happy to drive on smooth tarred streets with no potholes,” said a 29-year-old motorist, Rhulani Baloyi. “Report all the women and child abuse” The residents of the Waterpoort area, local farmers, the Waterpoort police and some police officers from the Makhado clusters participated in different sporting codes as part of the launch of the 16 Days of Activism against the abuse of women and children on Saturday.

The event started with fun runs over 10km, 7km, 5km and a veteran’s race. “I am very happy to have won,” said Farayi Makaka (41), who won the 10km race. “It feels good to participate in this event, where both parents and children stand against the abuse of women and children.”

The other notable stakeholders who attended the event included representatives from Munna ndi Nnyi, Vhembe Mobile clinic, Youth against Crime (from Makhado SAPS cluster) and the Department of Social Development.

Seopa reminded the people that the fight against crime is every citizen’s responsibility. “Youths can be active for 24 hours. We must keep them busy, so that when they get to bed, they just fall asleep.

Or else they will wake up in the night and go out to do naughty things which might get them into jail.”

Ms Patience Howe said that, as a woman who was always surrounded by her sisters’ children, she needed to feel free to walk to the next farm or to the local shopping centre. “We don’t want criminals to live among us; we will report them to the police,” she said.

Manaledzi High wins local drama competition A large group of community members from all parts of Sinthumule/Kutama attended a drama competition at the Dzumbululo Ministery in Tshiozwi a fortnight ago.

The event was organized by the well-known SABC 2 soapie Muvhango actor, Millicent Makhado.

According to her, the competition was part of the arts and culture programme that is conducted every year. “The main purpose of these drama engagements is to unify the young people of Vhembe.” She added that the competition will not end at local level.

Pupils from three secondary schools, Maluta, Manaledzi and Jonathan Thifhulufheli High, received training the past three months in how to act, produce and conduct a drama.

Mr Ledimo Moleleki from the Department of Arts and Culture said it was important to preserve culture, as it built permanent responsibility. “This competition creates a platform for sharing and exposing the talents of our local groups. Christmas party for Londanani Centre encourage them to do more.

Londanani is a Tshivenda word which means take care of each other and is a charity organisation, formed in 1998 and is the brainchild of Apostle Ramudzuli Lehangwa.

He described his calling from God as not only to preach the Word of God, but also to take care of poor and vulnerable children.

According to him, Londonani is taking care for more than 86 children. Some of them are orphans while others are heading families.

The organisation also teaches

the poor children life skills, provides school education support and food provision.

Mrs Sarie Coetzee of the Levubu Christian Fellowship Centre said they had been donating products and gifts to Londanani for more than six years. “We want our vulnerable children to realize their dreams and enjoy Christmas like the other children who have parents who take care of them.

Some of these children have lost both parents and no one is taking care of them and we have to help such poor children,� said Coetzee.

First gospel album for Joseph T Soza Rhumba maestro Joseph T Soza, who thrilled fans in Zimbabwe and in South Africa, is now a born-again Christian.

Soza, a staunch member of the Kingdom Ambassadors Ministries International at Maniini, has also released his first gospel album. The album, Fire, is his fifth offering and comes after a long absence in the music industry.

He last recorded three years ago when he released the very popular Volume 4, Phindulo.

Judging by the response the six-track album has received since its launch, all indications are that it will catapult him to greater heights and entrench him in the tough gospel music scene. "I have been wandering around. I saw most of the things in the world, but there was one thing that I was missing in life: that is God. Now that I have found the Lord, everything has to change and my life has to bear testimony that I have changed, and that is where this album came into being," he said.

He said people could have everything they could wish for in life but without God they would never enjoy life to the fullest. "We are all created in the image of God and we should pay back by praising Him and, in my case, it is through music. I am very grateful to my spiritual father, Pastor Nathaniel Tshikororo, and the whole congregation who saw potential in me and made this project a reality," added Soza.

Kingdom Ambassadors Ministries International's founder, Pastor Nathaniel Tshikororo, has high praise for the new album. "Soza is one of the best gospel artists to have emerged from this area. His music is very powerful and we hope many will be lured to the kingdom of God through this album; it will touch many souls," said Tshikororo.

The day was filled with gospel songs and the performing of dramas.

New milestone for Toyota SA Motors

Team members at Toyota South Africa Motors last week celebrated as the 1 millionth proudly South African manufactured Corolla rolled of the production line at the company’s prospecton plant in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal.

The white Toyota Corolla that came off the production line on Wednesday, 20 November, crowns six years of successful production in which the Corolla was produced in both leftand right-hand drive variants and exported to regions, including Eastern and Western Europe, the Caribbean and Africa.

“It is very symbolic that the Corolla reaches this milestone now,” says Dr Johan van Zyl, president and CEO of Toyota South Africa Motors.

“It not only celebrates a very successful production run for the tenth generation of the world’s favourite car, but it heralds the introduction of the new Corolla in 2014.”

The Corolla was first introduced in South Africa in 1975 and soon became South Africa’s

favourite family vehicle. It has been produced at Toyota’s prospecton plant since introduction, while its local content was gradually increased and the range widened to include left- and righthand drive models for various export markets.

While the 1 millionth Corolla will find pride of place next to the 1 millionth Hilux in Toyota’s museum at its sales and marketing head office in Sandton, the prospecton plant is busy preparing the manufacturing facility for the start of production of the new Corolla, which was revealed at the recent Johannesburg International Motor Show in October. “The Corolla benefitted from our R8 billion investment programme (first announced in 2008), which modernised the plant and introduced a state-of-the-art paint plant. With the new Corolla, we hope to start our next round of investment and look forward to sharing this plan when our first new generation Corolla models roll off the line,” says Dr Van Zyl. One example of such a service is IDMe from ER24, which connects you to fast medical help via your cellphone in the event of an emergency. The service, which is powered by technology from Cellfind, turns your cellphone into a panic button that immediately links you to ER24’s Contact Centre when you hit a speed dial number. Your location will be traced by means of triangulation, using cellular towers.

All new Opel Astra sure to attract style-concious With the holiday season almost upon us, the new Opel Astra’s recent arrival in South Africa could not have been more perfectly planned.

The new Astra 1.4 Turbo Essentia sedan models benefit from a forced-induction motor – with 103kW available between 4 900 and 6 000rpm and 200Nm of torque between 1 850 and 4 900 rpm.

The top-of-the-range Astra 1.6 Turbo Cosmo sedan comes with a smooth and powerful 132 kW turbocharged petrol engine. In addition to the sporty driving dynamics, fuel efficiency remains key to the 1.6 Turbo Cosmo model, with carbon emissions and average fuel economy on the combined cycle balancing the equation perfectly – 159 g/km and 6.8-litres per 100 km.

Too many drivers still set off unprepared Every year, thousands of motorists across South Africa set off on long, often exhausting journeys without adequate preparation of their vehicles or enough rest.

In their rush to leave, they people often skimp on checking and preparing their vehicles adequately for the journey. Estimates suggest that fatigue is a factor in up to 30% of fatal crashes and 15% of serious injury crashes.

If you have facilities to read a newspaper online, why do you have to buy a hard copy? I hope and trust that you will spend responsibly during this festive season.

A debt free marriage? Is it possible, and how possible is it?

It is not possible to create a debtfree marriage if we take it from the point that we are forever indebted to one another as a couple in terms of love and doing our best to fan the flames in all areas. It is possible to develop a debt-free marriage when it comes to economic matters.

The first step is to resolve to have financial harmony in the house in terms of not only how you generate funds but also how you spend it.

Develop a culture of talking about money freely and openly with one another. Financial discord and disharmony in many marriages is caused by trying to close any space for serious engagement. Financial harmony and a debt-free marriage therefore start with a common philosophy that a couple develops.

If happens that you might have tried it in the past and even gone to the point of sharing one card and one pin number, but one person may be very wasteful and just spend irresponsibly. I am reminded of what I normally see during this time of the year, with some women spending lots of money on groceries rather than on the education of their children.

Joyfull away weekend for Baroka FC

Soccer extravaganza at Makwarela

Last weekend was a joyful one for Baroka FC. They managed to collect the maximum points, despite the fact that they were playing away from home. Baroka did the unexpected when they beat one of the hot league-title chasers, Chippa United, 1-0 at the Philipi Stadium in Cape Town.

Baroka refused to succumb to early pressure from the home side. Their defenders frustrated the opponents by playing aerial balls from behind. The goal which earned Baroka three points came in the 74th minute via Thabiso Kutumela. He received a brilliant pass from Khotso Chabeli and silenced United’s fans with a thunderous close-range shot.

The victory was the third in a row for Baroka. They are now in the fifth position on the log.

Jomo Cosmos registered their second victory by beating Blackburn Rovers 1-0 at the Makhulong Stadium in Thembisa. In their see-saw battle at the Moruleng Stadium in Rustenburg on Sunday, United FC shared the spoils with Sivutsa Stars.

They played to a 3-3 draw. At one stage Sivutsa were leading 3-1, but the home side came back strongly towards the end of the game.

FC Cape Town gave away points when they lost 0-1 to their neighbours, Vasco da Gama. Milano United maintained their unbeaten record by walloping Thanda Royal Zulu 4-0 at the Athlone Stadium.

Vikings and Jolly in cricket final This weekend, residents can look forward to some local cricket excitement with the final of the Louis Trichardt Cricket Club’s 20 Overs being decided on Sunday, 1 December, at Cloud’s End Hotel.

The semifinal match was decided between the Vikings from Makhado (Louis Trichardt) and the Lukmans from Thohoyandou on Sunday, 24 November.

Lukmans won the toss and decided to field first. The Vikings batsmen struggled a bit on a difficult batting wicket and ended up with 112 runs for the loss of

seven wickets.

The top scorers for the Vikings were Leon Furstenburg with 27 off 22 balls and Frikkie van Niekerk with 18 off 38 balls.

For Lukmans, Altaf picked up two wickets for 25 runs in his four overs.

Lukmans also struggled on the pitch and were all bowled out for 55 runs in the 17th over.

Bhatya was the only batsman getting to double figures, scoring 15 off 21 balls. For the Vikings, Warno Smit took five wickets for 17 runs in his four overs and Eduan Booysen, who was play-

ing his last game for the Vikings, finished off Lukman with one wicket for five runs in his third over, helping the Vikings to a 57-run win.

Their win in the semifinal secured the Vikings a place in the final, where they will come up against the Jolly team from Thohoyandou.

Aces could have sealed the game in the first 15 minutes. They squandered three obvious scoring chances in the fourth, eighth and 14th minute. In the first instance it was John Seepe who caused an upset. Seepe stirred up the team’s fans by holding onto the ball for far too long within the box, after receiving a brilliant pass from Zecks Nare. Solomon Malope fumbled within the box four minutes later. Instead of chipping the ball and trying other possible ways, Malope did the unexpected by shooting aimlessly, with the keeper already beaten.

It soon became apparent that it was Aces’ day when Freddy Kekana missed a fortune in the 14th minute. Kekana unleashed a volley from the 20-meter area. The ball hit the woodwork and landed outside the field of play for a goal kick.

The wheel of fortune turned against the Modimolle side in the 29th minute. Joshua Sebola caught their keeper, Philip Rantho, napping and blasted in a rocket from inside the box. Jerry Leopa of Great North was reprimanded with a card for wasting time four minutes before the half-time whistle.

The captain of Aces, Morris Chauke, was engaged in a heated debate with the referee over

some of the decisions which the whistle man took against Aces. Realizing that the situation was getting out of hand, the referee flashed yellow at Chauke in a bid to silence him. Aces lost shape in the middle of the park shortly after the incident. Great North scored the second through Eric Ngoepe in the 78th minute.

Great North beat Blue Rocks 4-3 in the final at the same venue later that afternoon.

Mayor Carol Phiri cuts the ribbon to mark the official opening of the R6,2 million Malale Sports Centre while other dignitaries join her in the celebrations. The event took place a week ago in Malale village, situated in Ward 1 of the Musina Local Municipality. The centre consists of a multipurpose court which caters for netball, tennis, volleyball and basketball. There is also a soccer pitch, ablution facilities, change rooms, guard room and palisade fence which protects the property. Phiri said that the Musina Municipality viewed recreational facilities in a very serious light. “Sport is very important - not only to kids, but for adults as well. Local soccer champions Benny’s Care Soccer Academy aim to bring the trophy home when Limpopo host the Metropolitan U/16 championship next week.

Stone Breakers win Masibambane tournament Tshikwani Stone Breakers beat Madombidzha Celtic 6-5 in the final match of the Masibambane tournament, played at the Madombidzha grounds on Sunday.

The two teams played to a 1-all draw and the winner was determined through a penalty shoot-out.

The visitors were strong at the far back and striking force, but they lacked cohesion in the middle of the park. The balls that threatened the

defence of Celtic were ballooned from behind.

The home team enjoyed more ball possession, but their promising moves couldn’t penetrate the defence of Breakers.

The boys from Tshikwani deserved the victory. From the onset their midfielders were dictating the terms and their strikers kept on unleashing rockets from outside the box.

The home side came close to

scoring in the 17th minute, when Edwin Muludzi broke loose and shot wide with only the keeper to beat. Sukanani Netshukwi of Celtic missed the ball and Godfrey Magera of Breakers received it, beating keeper Shadrack Mudimeli easily to make the half-time score 1-0.
