“Hy was verskriklik lief vir diere gewees, veral voëltjies.

Makhado municipality’s spokesperson, Mr Louis Bobodi, confirmed that some of their officials had been arrested. He said that the cases were now with the courts and the municipality was waiting for the law to take its course. “Whatever the outcome, the municipality will abide by the ruling,” said Bobodi.

On Monday, four people working as testing officials and a driving-school operator were arrested in Makwarela for allegedly issuing documents fraudulently to applicants for a fee. The four were employed at the private testing station at Makwarela, called Maanda-Ashu vehicle testing station. Some of the officials also allegedly certified vehicles as roadworthy without conducting the necessary tests. In one incident, a vehicle that had been impounded by the Johannesburg Metro Police Department had allegedly been certified as roadworthy. During the operation, officers also seized documents. The four accused who were arrested appeared in the Thohoyandou Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday and were granted bail of R1 000 each. The accused are: Tshifhiwa Mulaudzi (24), Fhungo Mamphiswana (25), Khathutshelo Sioga (29) and Voni Ramuntshi (29). The case was postponed to 21 January next year. According to the Hawks’ spokesperson, Captain Matimba Maluleke, they started investigating the conduct of the officials after complaints they had received. “Vehicle roadworthiness is one of the major contributors to road accidents and fatalities in South Africa. The raid will assist in reducing this threat in the forthcoming festive period,” said Maluleke. He said that they were

and uncork more and more people, and that more books will follow,” was the comment of Elize Dercksen. Linda said she was grateful towards God who put her on this journey and carried her through. She thanked her husband, Rev Jan van der Westhuizen, for his generous support and Agapé Christian Centre and their leaders for their backing. She also thanked Corrie Dercksen, who sponsored the meat, the guests who attended and the whole team for the excellent and joyful way in which they served. The book is available for purchase at R199 from Linda, who can be contacted at 0845160223 or via the website www.holyspiritauthor.com

Former journalist of the Zoutpansberger Linda van der Westhuizen held the official launch of her first book, Uncorked by the Holy Spirit: 7 ways to encounter our good God, on Sunday, 17 November, at the Agapé Christian Centre in Louis Trichardt. Pastors Sam and Dalene van Niekerk joined other leaders of Agapé, as well as pastors from surrounding areas, in the blessing of the book and its author. Pastors Petrus Mamuhohi of Destiny Word Ministries in Mandiwana and Sam van Niekerk of Agapé delivered addresses. Mamuhohi said he had prescribed the book for his third-year students, while Van Niekerk told attendees the book had been written from the author’s heart. A time of deep worship followed, led by Bolaji Jegede and Nke Mosoma. In her address, Linda said to be ‘uncorked’ meant to be set free from a state of being held in check. She added: “To be uncorked by the Holy Spirit is to have his power unleashed through you.” She emphasized the importance of being anchored in the goodness of God. A team of nearly 30 people illustrated Chapter 6 of the book, which is entitled ‘Move in Risk’. They prayed for the guests and encouraged them. In the process, they were ‘uncorked’ themselves. “God is amazing. He showed us how much He trusts us as his vessels… it was so humbling,” said team member Nke. Corrie Dercksen said ‘fear is a liar’ and ministered despite the initial ‘stage fright’. Ingrid Pepler from Johannesburg said “this evening was like a heavenly party - from glory to glory!” Linda van der Westhuizen with her book, “I trust that this book will have a wide reach Uncorked by the Holy Spirit.

Left and middle: Two of the many new sign boards on the R524 from Thohoyandou indicating the name of Louis Trichardt as Makhado. Right: At least on the N1 the town’s name is correctly indicated as Louis Trichardt.

SANRAL will rectify erroneous use of Makhado name By Andries van Zyl Numerous Louis Trichardt residents noticed that the name of Louis Trichardt had apparently changed to Makhado again over the past few weeks, especially motorists coming into town on the R524 from Thohoyandou. For the past couple of months, motorists were left frustrated by the major construction taking place on the R524 between Leeu Street and the N1. The project included the building of a big traffic circle on the corners of Impala and Oranje Street where they meet the R524 as part of the upgrades and expansions of the Makhado Crossing shopping mall. This also led to Leeu and Rooibok Street, which used to connect with the R524, being completely blocked off to the public, basically overnight – also to the great frustration of motorists. Another part of the upgrade to the road was the erection of new road signage. These new signs, however, all indicate the name of the

town as Makhado, all the way into town except at the intersection of the R524 and N1, where the new signs indicate the town’s name as Louis Trichardt. One of the organisations that immediately reacted to oppose the use of the name Makhado instead of Louis Trichardt, was the Chairperson’s Association (CA). The CA has successfully fought against the town’s name changing to Makhado in the past. Most recently, on 9 October 2018, the North Gauteng High Court in Pretoria found in favour of the CA against the Makhado Municipality’s application for a rescission of the 30 October 2014 High Court judgement. According to this judgement, Louis Trichardt was to remain Louis Trichardt after the court set aside the decision of the former Minister of Arts and Culture, Mr Paul Mashatile, to approve the recommendation of the South African Geographical Names Council (SAGNC) to change the name of the town Louis Trichardt to Makhado. Mr André Naudé of the CA made it clear last

week that any person or organisation who refers to Louis Trichardt as Makhado is in contravention of a High Court order and that they would institute legal proceedings against any person or organisation responsible for the approval and erection of the sign boards if the mistake is not rectified immediately. The South African National Road Agency (SANRAL) was asked whether they were aware of the sign boards erroneously referring to Louis Trichardt as Makhado. The newspaper’s enquiry was then referred to Mr Progress Hlahla (Northern Region Manager). In his response, Hlahla confirmed that the erection of the signboards was part of the roadworks for the construction of Makhado Crossing. “The design drawings were accepted by SANRAL, which acceptance is administrative in nature,” said Hlahla. He added that he did not know who had manufactured the signboards, in response to a question whether SANRAL had been responsible, with specific reference to the High Court order confirming that the town’s

name is Louis Trichardt. Regarding the above, Hlahla said that they were not aware of the court order. “The name change from Makhado to Louis Trichardt was publicized by the media years ago. SANRAL was not aware of the High Court order. SANRAL looks forward to having a copy of the High Court order provided by the Chairperson’s Association. There accordingly was no intentional wrongdoing,” said Hlahla. He added that the unintentional error was made by the Makhado Crossing project team. “Both Makhado and Louis Trichardt are in common use,” said Hlahla. Having explained the unintentional, erroneous use of the name Makhado, Hlahla said that SANRAL intended to rectify the mistake. “Instruction will be given to the project team appointed by the developer of Makhado Mall to overlay the wording Makhado with Louis Trichardt,” said Hlahla. He said that this would be done within a reasonable time for a sign company to make the overlays.

A couple of people might have noticed that not much was happening at Leach Printers in Louis Trichardt last Thursday. That was because the management and staff were celebra ting this well-known local business’s 35th birthday. The celebration took place at the Louis Trichardt Rugby Club. The business was founded by Charles and Bev Leach in 1984. They moved to their current location on the corner of Rissik and President Street on 1 September 1990 after their previous premises in Joubert Street became too small. Pictured are the management and staff during the birthday celebrations. Apart from Charles and Bev, a couple of staff members have been with the business from the start.

In June last year, Global Bitcoin Investments held a special function during which donations were made to several local charitable organisations. The event was attended by dignitaries, which included councillors from the Thulamela Municipality and even a representative of the National Youth Development Agency. The company was praised for its entrepreneurial vision and its philanthropy. Investment experts had their doubts about the achievability of some of the promises made by the BitClub marketers, but for more than a year the Thohoyandou-based company proceeded with their business and collected investment money. Slowly, however, cracks started appearing. About three weeks ago, the Zoutpansberger contacted a disgruntled investor, who told us that he had invested just over R70 000 in the scheme in October 2018. Among other things, he was promised that he would earn one Bitcoin seven months after investing. In May 2018, when “interest” on his investment was due to be paid out, this would have been worth about R121 500. The payment, however, did not happen and he also realised that his investment had been made into an incorrect “pool”. His efforts to try and recover his money amounted to nothing, with phone calls being ignored. When being questioned as to what documentation had been signed and what the agreements entailed, he answered that no paperwork was involved. The only documents forwarded to him were two marketing pamphlets, giving a brief outline of how the BitClub scheme works, but these pamphlets were very vague. We sent a reporter to the office in Thohoyandou two weeks ago to try and find out if it was still open for business. At “Office no: 8, 9 & 12, Silver Square Mall” no-one was to be found, with chains and locks on the doors. Hawkers operating across from the premises said that some staff members did open up now and then, but for most of the time the offices remained locked.

Who are Global Bitcoin Investments? The company was registered in December

2017 and has only one director, the 38-year-old Enock Phathutshedzo Nembilwi. During the 2016 local elections, he stood as a candidate for COPE in a ward in the Thulamela Municipality. The registered address for Global Bitcoin Investments is a house in upmarket Schimper Crescent in Louis Trichardt. Two weeks ago, a removal truck was parked in front of the house, with workers busy loading expensive furniture. When the owner of the house was contacted, he said that Nembilwi used to be his tenant. He was not aware of the fact that Nembilwi had registered the house as a business premises. He said that he had recently sold the house and the new owner would be moving in soon. Nembilwi was given notice and moved out. On a question of whether Nembilwi was behind on his rent, he merely answered that “he owes me a lot of money”. The cellphone numbers supplied for Nembilwi did not work. One of the numbers did not ring and the other was answered by a woman, who denied any knowledge of a Mr Nembilwi. We tried another contact number, which was for Mr Marshil Makananisa, who worked for the company. When he was asked about Global Bitcoin Investment, he said that he was no longer involved with this company. “I quit,” he said. When prompted to elaborate, he said that the staff were no longer being paid. He said that five more people working for the company had all left. “What I know is that a lot of people are complaining about Mr Nembilwi,” he said. He could not assist with additional phone numbers where Nembilwi could be contacted. A seies of questions were emailed to Nembilwi at the official address provided, but he did not respond. Questions about Global Bitcoin Investments were also sent to the liaison department of the Financial Sector Conduct Authority (FSCA). The FSCA was asked whether the regulating and monitoring authority was aware of the BitClub scheme and whether an investigation was being conducted. In spite of sending the email to more officials at the FSCA (after receiving no replies), we had received no responses at the time of our going to press.

Simply too good to be true? By Anton van Zyl “Is it a scam?” An easy answer to this would be: “If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.” To check whether the BitClub scheme (see article on p6) is legitimate, one needs to check whether the returns promised are realistically achievable. One investor who is now trying to get his money back says that he was promised one Bitcoin as profit after seven months. He invested in October last year and went for the top-ofthe-range option, which cost him R70 800. The value of a Bitcoin varies and gets influenced by factors such as supply and demand, but in October 2018 it was around $6 320. The cryptocurrency since then took a bit of a nosedive, and in January this year it levelled out at $3 441. Let’s take May 2019 as the date when his investment “matured” and he would have received his Bitcoin. At that stage a Bitcoin was worth $8 278. Considering the exchange rate at the time, the value of the Bitcoin would have been roughly R121 500. So, for an investment of R70 800 he would have made more than R50 000 profit in much less than a year (and he still had the investment). To be fair to the company running the investment scheme, one needs to be more conservative and not only listen to promises made by salespeople. On the BitClub website it is stated: “Your anticipated growth in investment is between 3 and 5% per month (based on previous performance). While BitClub does not, and never will, guarantee a return on investment, the 3 – 5 % growth per month is an expected return. Depending on the profitability of the mining, it could be higher some months, and lower other months.” Let us take two scenarios – one with a 5% per month growth and the other on 3%. On an investment of R70 800, at 5% per month, the investment would have grown to R127 146 in one year (12 months), a profit of R56 346. On a 3% per month growth, the total would be R100 943, with a profit of R30 143. Compare this to a “normal” investment at a commercial bank. On such an amount it should not be too difficult to get 7% interest per annum. If the interest gets paid per month, the R70 800 would have grown to R75 918 after a year, a profit of R5 118. What is clear is that even the 3% per month return on investment alluded to by BitClub by far exceeds any investment option available from a reputable institution in the country. If the BitClub representatives are to be believed, you can easily double your money in a year. It sounds too good to be true … because it probably is.

A popular choice, the Antminer D3, would need one year and 52 days of mining before it would cover its own hardware cost. In South Africa, such machines would easily run up an electricity bill of over R1 200 per month. “Looking at the data above, it is apparent that while some users may be able to make a small profit mining digital currency, it is no longer profitable for the majority of users,” was McCane’s conclusion. Factors such as a steep rise in the value of Bitcoin will definitely influence the profitability, but for the period that our local investor took part in the scheme, it actually fell to under $4 000, before recovering again.

How are the “dividends” then possible?

Our investor did receive money from the scheme during the first few months. He says that the membership fee ($99) was repaid and thereafter another $500. The total, in Rand value, that was paid to him, was R8 512. If it was an ordinary investment, this would have been better than what he could get at any financial institution on a risk-free option. The problem is, of course, that this is not what he was promised, and he is now also battling to get his investment back. The only way possible to pay investors such “dividends” when the investment itself did not perform, is to pay them from money deposited into the scheme by new investors. The BitClub scheme has a strong emphasis on recruitment and offers huge incentives for referrals. This, unfortunately, is a tell-tale sign of a Ponzi scheme. To understand what a Ponzi scheme is, one first has to look at the simplified form, the equally dangerous pyramid scheme. The difference between a Ponzi scheme and a pyramid scheme lies in the way each scheme is promoted. With pyramid schemes, the participants are aware of the fact that revenue is generated by recruiting new members. With Ponzi schemes, the participants may not always know this, and the drivers of the scheme can deceive investors into believing that a fair amount of legitimacy is involved. In both schemes, however, new investors’ money is used to pay earlier investors or the drivers of the scheme. In both cases, the scheme crashes when the cash stops flowing in. To properly explain how a pyramid scheme works, using an example would be best. Let us set up a very sedate fictitious scheme where we ask people to each invest R100. We promise them 25% interest, payable at the end of the year, as long as they leave their money in the scheme. In effect this means that, after four years, they would have doubled their money. Department urges farmers to restrict movement Agricultural News

Makhado municipal spokesperson Mr Louis Bobodi confirmed on Monday that the Impala- and Leeu Street junctions with the R524 (Thohoyandou road) in Louis Trichardt will remain closed. The changes came as a result of the upgrades to Makhado Crossing and the recommendations of the South African National Roads Agency (SANRAL). “We hope that the motorists will get used to the changes and signage [indicating that the streets are closed] will be in place,” said Bobodi.

The Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development has called upon farmers of cloven-hooved livestock to restrict the movement of these animals until the foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) outbreak in Limpopo has been stabilised. In a joint statement issued by the department and the National Animal Health Forum last week, the 1 November FMD outbreak was confirmed to have been traced back to infected animals being sold at an auction facility in Limpopo. This after veterinary services were alerted to clinical signs suspicious for FMD in a herd of cattle on a farm in the Molemole (Dendron) area. The statement also confirmed that at least five commercial facilities have been affected as a result. “More properties that purchased animals at the same auction could be affected. All known infected properties have been placed under quarantine, suspect properties under precautionary quarantine; and plans to resolve the situation are being implemented,” reads the joint statement. The department advised farmers and livestock owners that all parties transacting with cloven-hoofed animals should observe the utmost caution. “Only transport animals that are healthy and destined for immediate slaughter,” said the department. Regarding the above, the department stated that all buyers of animals should ensure that the animals purchased were free of disease, especially free of FMD. “Any

transaction of cloven-hoofed animals should be accompanied with a veterinary health certificate issued by a veterinarian,” said the department. The department warned that the FMD virus can remain viable in the environment for a few days. “Thus, any transport vehicle should be thoroughly cleaned and disinfected away from any animals before animals are loaded. Vehicles used to transport animals to abattoirs should therefore be thoroughly cleaned and disinfected before leaving the abattoir premises,” said the department. They added that in terms of Section 11 of the Animal Diseases Act of 1984, it was the responsibility of “any owner or manager of land on which there are animals … take … all reasonable steps to prevent the infection of the animals with any animal disease, or parasite and the spreading thereof from the relevant land or animals…”. “Anyone spreading FMD through the movement of animals may thus be held civilly and/or criminally liable for such offence,” they warned. The department also gave biosecurity tips for persons travelling to and from known FMD areas. They said that any person having had contact with possibly infected animals should take all precautions necessary to change clothing and footwear before handling other cloven-hoofed animals. “Anybody who is unsure of the above advice should please contact their local state or private veterinarian for biosecurity guidance and/or assistance to develop a biosecurity protocol for their farm,” said the department. People can also visit www.nahf.co.za for the FMD-Basic Biosecurity Guidelines.

KNP tourist landmark to be blown to pieces Environmental News One of the Kruger National Park’s popular tourist landmarks, the Kanniedood Dam, will indeed “die” in December. The Kruger National Park (KNP) announced on Monday that they, in conjunction with the South African National Defence Force (SANDF), will demolish the remaining part of Kanniedood Dam found on the S50, about 9km southeast of Shingwedzi Camp. “The demolition operation will be conducted from Friday, 29 November, until Friday, 6 December 2019. Explosives will be used to demolish the structure; after which the rubble will be removed as part of the rehabilitation process undertaken by the Expanded Public Works, Biodiversity Social Programme,” states the KNP in a press release. To ensure the safety of tourists, the KNP said that all roads

in the areas would be temporarily closed from 29 November to 6 December. “The affected roads are the S50 gravel road, this will be closed from the S50 and the S134 junction in Shingwedzi to the S50 and S143 junction in Mooiplaas from 29 November to 6 December 2019,” said KNP spokesperson Mr Isaac Phaahla. Additional safety measures have also been put in place. KNP ranger teams and SANDF firefighting teams will be on standby to extinguish any wildfires that may arise. The area around the target structures will also be cleared on the ground to ensure animals and human beings are safe, and an aerial flight will be dispatched to the area immediately prior to detonation to ensure no tourists, animals or staff members are near the target. The Kanniedood dam wall was breached by the floods in January 2013 at the southern anchors of the wall, caus-

ing the river to open a new channel by passing the dam wall on the southern bank of the Shingwedzi River. The wall thus became redundant after the floods because it could no longer serve the purpose of retaining water. “KNP has an artificial water provision policy which allows for the closing and removal of artificial water points. Artificial waterholes where water did not previously occur naturally have led to numerous ecological problems such as erosion and other environmental degradation (such as barriers to fish-migration routes),” explained Phaahla. The KNP conservation management has taken steps to rectify these negative consequences by closing and demolishing certain artificial waterholes. “To enhance the tourist experience, alternative game-viewing opportunities will be provided in the future at areas of naturally occurring surface water,” states the KNP in its press release.

Our new prefects were democratically elected by the teachers, Gr 6’s and old prefects, after all the Gr 6 learners went on a leadership camp to Schoemansdal. After the names of the new prefects were announced, they all went on a prefect camp to Schoemansdal. There they did several activities in order to prepare them for their year full of duties. hulle ‘n spesiale liedjie gesing.

Daar is verskeie redes waarom naskool lekker is.

3DE & 4DE KWARTAAL 2019 4

jaarlikse Kersete, want dit is ‘n groot bederf.

Recycling is big at Triegies!

By Mukovhe Tlou

Our school has collected a huge amount of recycling this year.We are trying to encourage as many people as possible to recycle. The Adventure Club started a new initiative and bought a lot of recycling containers that were put in each classroom. Mr Van den Berg and Mr Du Toit are encouraging children to recycle as much plastic, paper, metal and glass as possible. Let’s all make a difference and help to build our future on a cleaner planet.

Gr7-LOOPBAANDAG

OPEN YOUR MOUTH AND SAY AAAAAAA This year was a great year for the Gr R’s. The visited the dentist, Drs Roos and Naudé and also the Zoutpansberg Private Hospital where they learned about caring for our bodies and teeth. The dentist checked every child’s teeth

and told them how to take care of their teeth. Then they also visited the hospital and were fascinated by all the different parts of the hospital, e.g. the pharmacy. X-ray rooms, theatre en ER room. Some of the kids remembered a visit that they have paid to the hospital. Next time they have to go to the dentist or hospital, they won’t be scared at all!

So word hulle dan ook as die Limpopo-A kampioene gekroon! Baie geluk seuns.

Six, six, four, four, come one boys, we need some more. Hey, hey what do we say? Hit that ball to the Milky Way!

y letter published in the Zoutpansberger on Thursday, 21 November, addressed to the management of Makhado Crossing Centre, refers. It appears that I was not the only citizen who became alarmed at the sight of the fever trees being “chopped down”. When Mr Wally Schultz of S.O.L.V.E. became aware of the situation, he contacted the project manager, Mr Christiaan Venter, who agreed to halt all activities (ref the trees) until Mr Schultz could meet with him.

- Ds. Johan Marais (Baptiste Kerk Louis Trichardt)

All interested members of the public are invited to attend the meeting. Enquiries must be directed to N Dagada or M D Munyai at (015) 519 3000 Civic Centre 83 Krogh Street LOUIS TRICHARDT, 0920 Notice No: 146 of 2019 File No: 4/2/2

This meeting took place on the same day, Wednesday (20 November), where Mr Venter gave Wally the assurance that, besides the first two trees that were indeed chopped down, no other fever trees will be removed. The trimming of the remaining trees is to encourage the trees to grow horizontally, which would mean more shade for the customers of the centre. I therefore give Mr Venter and the management team my heartfelt thanks for being sensitive to the community’s concerns and a big thank you to Wally Schultz for stepping in when action was needed. If we work together as a community, we can achieve great things.

ZOUTPANSBERGER, 29 NOVEMBER 2019

Verskeie ouers

Foto verskaf.

Louis Trichardt’s first cricket team continued with their winning form on Sunday by clinching their third consecutive win in the Limpopo Impala Premier Cricket League. Louis Trichardt came up against the PanSolutions Eagles at the Louis Trichardt Oval, with Eagles batting first. The Eagles got off to a shaky start, with opener Pieter Haasbroek being dismissed for zero runs after six balls with the team’s score on 1 run. Next man back in the pavilion was Hercules Strydom, with the score on 18. Fortunately for the Eagles, fellow opener Gert Cilliers and teammate Theo Janse van Rensburg brought some stability to the innings, scoring 30 and 24 runs respectively. But after the departure of Theo with the score on 65 and Gert with the score on 69, the only other Eagles player to put up some resistance was Edward Human with 15 runs. The whole Eagles team were back in the dressing room in 29.5 overs of their 50-over game, with the score on 102. For Louis Trichardt, Craig Viljoen and Gerhardus Fourie were in devastating form, respectively taking four and three wickets in 8.5 and 8 overs. Louis Trichardt also got off to a shaky start, with the first three wickets tumbling for only 23 runs. Star batsmen Gerhardus Fourie and Dewald Joubert managed to save Louis Trichardt’s innings by respectively scoring 39 and 35 runs, with the score on 91 when they departed. Spyker Breytenbach (2), Wouter Smit (8 not out) and Stoffel du Toit took the score to 105 in 17.5 overs to secure Louis Trichardt a three-wicket win. For the Eagles, Pieter Haasbroek and Sybrand van
