Court to look at MM’s plea bargain

By Kaizer Nengovhela The Thohoyandou division of the High Court ordered the Thulamela Municipality on Tuesday to provide documents and the reasons why it had not acted and suspended its municipal manager, Mr Hlengani Maluleke, in line with the recommendation of a disciplinary committee.

of the VBS scandal for having approved the municipality’s R30 million investment in the now-liquidated bank.

A disciplinary hearing was eventually held on 26 July where Maluleke was charged with gross dishonesty, gross misconduct, or alternatively gross negligence. Prior to the hearing’s taking place, a plea agreement was concluded between the municipality and the municipal manager.

Despite the plea agree-

ment, in which Maluleke pleaded guilty to all seven charges, the hearing continued, with Maluleke opting to represent himself. As a mitigating factor, Maluleke was portrayed as having a clean record at the municipality and, under his leadership, Thulamela had received unqualified audit reports. He also indicated that he had approved the investment at VBS after political pressure had been exerted.

The plea agreement suggested that Maluleke receive a written warning, which will be kept on his file for a period of six months. This agreement, however, was not automatically accepted by the chairperson of the hearing.

He pointed out that Maluleke had been aware that his actions were in contravention of legislation, and he had been warned about this.

(Poor) Musina awards R43 million security tender

By Anton van Zyl The Musina Municipality has awarded a tender of almost R43 million for the provision of security services for the next three years. This amount is considerably higher than what the municipality had spent on security services in previous years and much higher than what was budgeted for.

The Musina Municipality came under scrutiny the past year for the way it seemingly allowed its infrastructure to be vandalised and stolen. The Nancefield stadium is quoted as an example, where a R4,7 million project was left unprotected and has become unusable. The stadium deteriorated to such a state because of theft and vandalism.

Many now consider it to be too risky to host any events.

Two weeks ago, the newspaper reported on the fact that the local community radio station, Musina FM, had to close down. One of the reasons given for the station’s closing down was the continuous theft of equipment. The station management said that, apart from the theft of cables, thugs had also stolen the transmitters and antenna. Musina FM operated from a building owned by the municipality. The municipality responded by saying that the station had the responsibil-

ity to protect its equipment and the property.

In February this year, the municipality put out a tender for the provision of security services for the next three years. In total, 45 companies submitted tenders, which varied from R11,3 million to R66,04 million. The tender from Mahosi Protection Security Services for an amount of R43 392 081 was accepted. On average, that is R14,46 million per year.

Mahosi Protection Security Services has only one member, namely the 43-year-old Edward Thilivhali Nelwamondo. The company’s registered address is only given as Musina location, Musina. In answer to a question whether the company was compliant in terms of legislation, the municipality’s spokesperson, Wilson Dzebu, said that the bidder had complied with all the requirements.

Dzebu responded to a question to explain what the security services entail and said that, in total, 33 sites needed to be guarded. The security company needs to provide 54 guards, of which several are armed, working in shifts. The service does not include cash-banking services or VIP protection services.

To a question why this tender had been accepted and not any of the much cheaper options, Dzebu said that supply-chain management

policy did not award according to price only. “Other considerations as per advert and tender documents are considered,” he said.

In the latest budget of the Musina Municipality, under the heading for outsourced services, the cost for security is budgeted at R9 million. In a more detailed document filed at the National Treasury, a breakdown of costs is provided. In the 2019/20 financial year, Musina spent R7,528 million on security services. The expectation was that this would decrease to R6,85 million the following year, but the adapted figure changed to R13,47 million. The budget for the next three years was set at R38,75 million.

When Dzebu was asked about the big discrepancy between the budgeted figures and the tender, he denied that this was the case. “The calculation of the R9 million is not correct; that amount includes sites that belong to the district municipality and are not charged to our budget. Sites may also increase during the financial year because of additional completed projects or additions based on security assessments,” he said.

The Musina Municipality is one of the municipalities described as falling in the high-risk area and is still battling to settle its Eskom debts; service delivery issues are also an almost permanent ignitor of

conflict. As the only Vhembe-based municipality whose name appears on the latest Out of Order Index compiled by News24 ahead of the 2021 local-government elections, Musina comes in at a combined 23rd place on a list of the “worst” municipalities in the country.

Municipalities such as Musina have been criticised by the auditor-general for the excessive amounts paid to outsourcing certain functions. This, seen together with its excessive salary bills, means that very little money is left over for service delivery. Musina’s 2021/22 operating budget makes provision for an expected income of R437,5 million. The salary bill, including the cost of the councillors, amount to R171,2 million, which is 39,13% of the total. If contracted services of R37,76 million are added, this percentage jumps to 47,76%.

Dzebu reckons, however, that the high cost of security is inevitable and necessary. “The council has invested R629 million in property, plant, and equipment, a comparison of that amount to R9 million (sic) per annum is clearly unmatched.

The investment in security guards for R9 million reduces the cost of repairs and maintenance due to vandalism and theft,” he said.

The girls were only released on the morning of 19 October, when the suspects saw that community members were searching the houses for the missing girls.

Two suspects, brothers Khuthadzo (33) and Given Nemahangani (28), were arrested in connection with the rape. They appeared in the Dzanani Magistrate’s Court on 21 October. Their case was postponed to 28 October for a bail application.

According to Ramakhanya, the girls were prevented from shouting for help. “I’m shocked that the victims are still so young,” she said, adding that the girls were being counselled by social workers. Ramakhanya warned parents to always know where their children are.

The family, who could not be named to protect the children’s identities, thanked the police and community members for their support during the terrible four days their children had been missing.

By Maanda Bele Twenty-year-old Fhumulani Makungo from Mangondi Ha-Sidou was crowned first Princess for the Face of Miss Teen South Africa 2021 pageant, which was held in Pretoria-West on 10 October.

Fhumulani is ecstatic about her new title.

“It wasn’t easy, and the competition was tough. I was not expecting anything as it was the first time I competed in such a big competition. There were so many people, and the stage was so huge! But it was fun and a big challenge to me.”

Makungo already has titles such as second Princess for the Miss Venda Look of the Year and second Princess for the Miss Machena pageant. Unfortunately, Fhumulani has had to sacrifice some competitions because of a lack of financial support, but she stays optimistic and determined, nevertheless.

“I will definitely join more pageants in future because my wish is to see myself one day as Miss South Africa or Miss Universe. This title is just a foundation for big things still to come,” she said.

Friends sentenced to life for rape

By Silas Nduvheni The Sibasa Regional Court sentenced two friends, Murendeni Siliga (22) and Omphulusa Ramakuela (27) from Muledane village outside Thohoyandou, to life imprisonment, following the kidnapping and rape of an 18-year-old girl in 2017.

On 6 September 2017, Ramakuela ran into Siliga, who was accompanying his girlfriend to study in preparation for her trial final exams.

Ramakuela was apparently not happy with Siliga’s relationship with the girl, and they started arguing. Ramakuela then dragged the girl into nearby bushes, where he undressed her before raping her. When he had finished, they took the girl to Siliga’s homestead, where Ramakuela took R7 from the girl to buy cigarettes. Both men raped the girl repeatedly throughout the night. In the morning, they let her go but

warned that they would kill her if she told anyone what had happened.

Siliga and Ramakuela were arrested on 9 September 2017.

In addition to the life sentence for the rape, they also received five years for kidnapping and three years for robbery. The court ordered that the sentence of kidnapping and robbery run concurrently with the life imprisonment.

According to the spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) in Limpopo, Ms Mashudu Malabi-Dzhangi, Ramakuela argued during the trial that he was in a love relationship with the victim and had had consensual sex with her, while Siliga claimed that Ramakuela had forced him to rape her.

“The court rejected both versions from the two accused.

A witness, who had claimed to know about the relationship between Ramakuela and the victim, never came to court to testify, even though the defence

tried to call the witness several times. The court found that the State has proven its case beyond reasonable doubt and convicted both the two accused,” Malabi-Dzhangi said.

In aggravation of a harsher sentence, the public prosecutor, Mr Steven Muavha, argued that for a new civilisation that upholds respect for women and their dignity, the hardcore criminal who pounced on vulnerable members of society should be removed permanently from the community.

He further urged the court to consider the trauma suffered by the victim by looking at the accused’s inhuman actions, and pleaded with the court not to deviate from the prescribed minimum sentence.

The Director of Public Prosecutions, advocate Ivy Thenga, welcomed the sentence and applauded the state prosecutor for a successful prosecution and for bringing justice to the victim.

By Silas Nduvheni The ANC President, Mr Cyril Ramaphosa, warned councillors and mayors elected in the 1 November local-government elections that they must not steal the money meant for service delivery, and he promised that those who did steal money would be shown the door.

“We don’t want councillors and mayors who steal money meant for service delivery as soon as they are in power. It should be clearly understood that those lazy councillors, mayors … they don’t have a seat at the ANC,” said Ramaphosa.

Councillors and mayors who continue to give jobs to comrades, friends, and family members will be dismissed with immediate effect. “We want municipalities ready to deliver better services like water, electricity and roads to their communities,” said Ramaphosa.

According to her, they are also in dire need of education on bullying, self-acceptance and mental health.

Utile is a Grade 10 pupil at Capricorn High School in Polokwane and was selected as a finalist in the Miss Limpopo Teen beauty pageant recently. She wants to focus on educating children on these matters because she has discovered that people do not only survive on food and clothes in this life, but also need to be around people who love and remind them that they are good enough.

“One would think that one has already learned about life and mastered it, only to realise that there’s more to it than what meets the eye,” she said. “My visit to some of these centres that look after children showed me that I must focus more on educating the little ones on the dangers of bullying, so that they do not fall victims to [bullying] or end up as the culprits one day.”

Utile, who originally comes from Bungeni-Xitachi village in the Hlanganani area, feels

that too many young people lack self-acceptance, self-confidence and self-esteem as a result of so many social ills and challenges that further put them in a place where they lack motivation and encouragement to pursue their life’s desires.

“If we inject a sense of positivity in the children, they get to feel more positive and optimistic towards achieving more in life,” she said.

Fifty independents vying for votes

By Maanda Bele The fifth local government election will have the highest number ever of independent candidates in Vhembe.

Whereas only 12 independents stood in 2016, this time around, 50 such candidates are hoping to secure enough votes to serve on one of the five local municipalities.

According to the outreach person of the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) in Vhembe, Mr Jeffrey Radzilani, 231 independent candidates have registered in Limpopo for this coming local-government election, of which Vhembe District has 50.

The manifestos of the independent candidates contain numerous similarities, with most

promising to address issues such as irregular water supply, better roads, employment opportunities for local labour, empowering young people, and safety.

What is notable is that many of the independent candidates used to be involved and even served in high positions in structures of the major political parties.

its name from the biblical Siloam pool in Jerusalem. When Jesus told the blind man to go and wash his eyes at the pool, the man recovered his eyesight, and this is why many of the villagers believe that the hot spring in Nzhelele has healing powers.

According to the spring’s history, the water was cold until 1969, when it inexplicably became hot overnight. Researcher Washington Nyabeze did some testing of his own at the spring.

In May 2008, he had measured the water’s temperature at 67.5°C, and in June 2009, it was 63.3°C. In 2010, research by the University of Fort Hare found the spring at Siloam to be the hottest natural spring in South Africa. However, in 2012, more research showed that the temperature of the water had risen to 71°C. “With the problem of water shortages in our area, this water comes in very handy,” one of the local villagers, Azwianewi Maphagela, said.

Vho-Tendani Gogome Tshifularo (53) was ordained as bishop of the New African Apostolic Church during an event held at Malavuwe village on Saturday, 23 October.

The ordination came after Tshifularo’s father, Archbishop Tshisaphungo Samson Gogome Tshifularo, passed away at the age of 80 last year.

“I feel honoured and humbled to be the first woman bishop of the New African Apostolic Church,” she said. “I thank God who put me in this position to lead the church from where the late Archbishop ended. I am also indebted

to the family and congregation for their support, for I know that they will continue to be there to walk this journey with me.”

During the ceremony, Tshifularo asked fellow congregants to continue to pray for her, so that she will lead them according to God’s will.

She also urged the youth out there to consider attending church services, so that they can receive sound teachings in life. “It is high time that we cordially persuade our youth to stay away from the harsh streets.”

Tshifularo said that she would go to the mountains and caves to pray and seek more wisdom, just as her fa-

ther had done. “We are faced with the Covid-19 pandemic, and this needs earnest prayers from a truth-filled heart,” she said. “As a country, we are also wrestling the monster that is gender-based violence to stop because it affects us all.”

Dr Johannes Gogome Tshifularo, the new bishop’s brother, promised that, as a family, they would lend her their total support.

The late Archbishop Tshifularo had been a hard worker who had cared for and looked after his four wives, 26 children, 70 grandchildren, and many great-grandchildren. He was revered and known for preaching about love, peace, unity and harmony.

Lufuno’s family coping with loss

By Maanda Bele Almost six months have passed since the tragic death of Mbilwi student Lufuno Mavhunga, who committed suicide after a bullying incident at school.

Lufuno’s death shocked the whole country and since then people have been watching out for bullies in schools. One can safely say that Lufuno became a martyr to the world of bullied students.

Last Friday (15 October) senior members of the Netshituni Bus services visited the Mavhunga family to check on how they were doing after the tragic incident. Netshituni Bus Services played a vital role in organising Lufuno’s funeral.

Lufuno’s father, Mr Joseph Mavhunga, said that the family members have been coping very well under the circumstances. “We are taking it a step at a time and prayers are helping us as we are going to church a lot.” He said the family

was also planning to start a Lufuno Mavhunga Foundation that would help tackle the problem of bullying in schools.

Vusani Masakona from Netshituni Bus Services said that bullying was still a very big problem in the country. “We also want to lend a hand in the fight against this problem and be part of the Lufuno Mavhunga Foundation.”

Mukololo excels at reciting poems

By Tshifhiwa Mukwevho Twenty-seven-year-old Khathutshelo Mudogwa, known as “Mudogwa Mukololo wa Africa”, is an aspiring young performance poet from Ha-Masia Tshikwarani village.

Mudogwa started reciting biblical verses, in the form of poetry, during item sessions at church, but at the annual Masia Day celebration in 2011, where she entertained hundreds of guests, her talents were fully recognised, and from that moment on she never looked back.

“I had read and listened to many other poets’ work, and loved it,” she said. “As an artist, I strive for authenticity in my own work; I want people to see me in my work.”

She writes about social issues, such as the challenges faced with service delivery and crime, but also love and happiness. “I believe that my talent is still growing, but one day it will take me around the world,” she said.

Local artists invited to submit Ish-boy finds his voice A final album for Adolf music to Phalaphala FM

Ish-boy, otherwise known as Ishmael Ronewa Matshavha from Mashamba Tshivhuyuni village, has found the essence of life in music.

For the 26-year-old artist, music is like an ointment to a bruised skin; a shower of rain in the desert; green pastures to starved cattle. “We always run to music for comfort, warmth or advice in challenging times,” he said. “We sing when we are happy, and when we are sad it soothes us. For that reason, music is the essence of life.”

Ish-boy, who attended Tshivhuyuni Primary School and matriculated at Lishavhana Secondary School, first found his voice in the 12th grade. “While I used to sing at church, it was only later that I discovered my true voice as an artist and moulded it in a fashion that made it unique,” he said. “I didn’t want to be a copycat; I wanted to be me.”

He believes that music is a universal language through which he can interact with millions of people from different cultures across the world. “In spite of different languages, music brings us together into one language, and by the language of music I am referring to global peace, unity and harmony,” he said.

He is especially grateful to Khathutshelo Muluvhu, who had

encouraged him to focus wholly on music. “He told me that my voice was good and always cheered me on, so I didn’t give up,” he said. “Now I want to thank him because I am becoming a big name in the music industry.”

Ish-boy, who gets his inspiration from mega VenRap artist Mizo Phyll, is currently signed with PROtainment Records, where he is working on a fulllength album. His recent two tracks, which are on high rotation on some community radio stations, are A songo tuwa (ft Young Grain and Elivator), and Ngithanda wena (ft Dj Poison).

Rinae Mmbengwa, also known as Alkey, is steadily climbing the music ladder with his unique brand of music.

Alkey, who resides at Tshilamba in the Mutale area, remembers that he first fell in love with music when he was only seven years old.

As a child, he attended many music shows and festivals and happily cheered the artists as they ascended the stage to perform.

By listening and comparing music from different genres over the years he discovered his own voice and style as an artist. “With all the love and passion I got from the shows I attended as a fan, I was very proud when I first entered the studio and produced my first single, called Energy, in 2013,” he said.

Other songs on his tally stick include Rotakala, Low and Things. “I wrote, recorded and produced more songs, and they were all hits,” he said. “Rotakala means that, despite all the challenges, troubles and problems, we are a happy people.”

He said that artists should always respect their fans and not take them for granted as they form an integral part of the music industry.

“Don’t just record and release your songs; you must make sure that they are worth taking out there to the people,” he said.

Sad but true, but The Last Number is indeed Adolf Mr Thohoyandou’s final album to be released to his fans.

Sticking it out in the music industry for over 15 years, Adolf has decided to hang up his microphone and rather focus on producing other upcoming artists.

The Last Number will be released on his 31st birthday on 30 October this year.

Born Mpho Mushidzhi, Adolf started doing music in 2006, at the age of 16. He recorded his first track, Muledane, in 2008. The song later went viral and brought him a lot of fame. Throughout his music career, he released several mixtapes and four albums, namely Mbilu i kha dirwa, Munna ndi nnyi, Phakhama, and now The Last Number. Adolf became one of the most popular rappers in Venda, with more than 45 000 followers on Facebook.

He also started his own record label, MTye Records, in 2011 and has since signed many upcoming artists.

Although Adolf is known for dissing other Tshivenda hip-hop

rappers in his music, he said that his last album contained no dissing.

“The whole album is mature.

Very touching. It is actually a very emotional album, inspired by the reality of this world; the challenges humanity is facing currently,” he said.

Adolf had worked with different producers, such as Fanash beats, Deejay Kestival, Arehone Castro, Augustus Beats, Deejay Micro and Deejay Dice, and features artist such as Mizo Phyll, Bhamba, Mac J, Fizzy and others.

Adolf said that his album served as a lesson in life that we could still fix the world through music.

“Instead of rapping about money, drugs, women and other useless things, we can rap about life, love, peace and ways to beat poverty. Let our music build the nation.”

Basemark sees music as a form of expressing one’s deepest feelings. “This is the only form of communication that cannot be ignored,” he said. “For example, during the struggle against apartheid, people were chanting and singing to convey their message.”

“Your passion will haunt you some way or the other.” This is the conviction of aspiring Amapiano musician, Deejay Fulufhelo Thavhanyedza, affectionately known in the entertainment world as Basemark the Deejay.

Basemark was born and bred in the dusty village of Ngovhela-Phindula. His love of music started at a tender age when he played keyboard at his local church, alongside renowned gospel musician Rofhiwa Manyaga.

Although he did not swop his qualifications in electronics for his love of music at first, he has finally decided to invest in a musical venture and see where it leads.

Music is, after all, his greatest passion.

The soft-spoken Basemark recently recorded his first single, called Mama Africa, featuring Queen Popo, Dzomo la Venda, and his co- producer, Big Ropza, who needs no introduction to the music industry. Phalaphala FM invites all talented local musicians to submit their music to the station to be played on air.

The station’s programme manager, Ms Sharon Ravele, said that this was the perfect way to promote local music and give upcoming musicians a break to get the exposure they needed.

She explained this decision. “We believe that it is important for the people of the local community to listen to the music that is produced for them by local musicians, who often perform with musicians from other parts of the continent. So, this will be a chance for those collaborations to be heard at home.”

Artists who would like to make the most of this opportunity must be registered with SAMRO, SAMPRA, etcetera. Before submitting their music, they must ensure that their music is professionally mixed and mastered, and that the music does not contain explicit lyrics. Artists can then submit their original music and include all the track information.

“Our music compiler will listen to the submitted music and if it is a great track, the station might play it. We accept music in different languages and of any genre,” said Ravele.

Due to the high volume of submissions that will be received and the station’s selection process, they cannot contact all the artists with feedback. If you have not heard from Phalaphala FM after six weeks, please consider your submission unsuccessful.

Ravele said that this move was indeed great news for local artists, who stood to profit from a boost in music sales. For many listeners the decision also seems to have struck the right note.

Artists can submit their music via email to music@phalaphalafm.co.za. The attached file must be an MP3 file, and artists can include a short biography (optional) and attach the artwork in your email (800 x 800 pixels, optional).

Matangari family horrified by death of disabled man in burnt hut

By Silas Nduvheni The rural village of Matangari-Tshiumoni, outside Thohoyandou, was left horrified when a disabled man’s mud house burnt down on Friday night, 15 October, killing him in the process.

Ms Tshavhungwe Munyai, the mother of the deceased, 66-year-old Aifheli Munyai, only discovered his body inside the burnt hut the next day when she paid him a visit.

son and younger brother of the deceased, Mr Kenneth Mukhetho, said the family members were still baffled about the fire. “There was no electricity in his hut, and he didn’t use candles. He used the light from a small radio charged with solar. We suspect foul play as he had no arms or legs when his body was discovered. It might have been a ritual killing, [with] his body dumped back into his hut and the hut set on fire. However, we are not pointing fingers at anybody,

as we didn’t see anyone,” said Mukhetho.

Limpopo police spokesperson Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo confirmed that the police in Mutale have opened an inquest docket. They are making an appeal to the community at large to assist the police with any information regarding the incident that might help them with the investigation.

Aifheli was buried on Wednesday, 20 October, in the Matangari-Tshiumoni graveyard.

Matsa community come up with their own “Plan B” to get water

Maluleque triplets get IDs at last

By Godfrey Mandiwana The Maluleque triplets, Matimba, Vongani and Patience, who stay at Makuleke village near the Kruger National Park’s Pafuri gate, can now brag about being proud South Africans after the Department of Home Affairs issued their long-awaited identity books (IDs) two weeks ago.

The triplets were born in 2000 in the Malamulele hospital. Their parents, Ms Selina and Mr Phineas Maluleque, are from Mozambique but received South African citizenship approximately four decades ago. All

their efforts to get the children registered with the Department of Home Affairs in Saselamani were in vain as they were sent from pillar to post.

The triplets started their primary school and proceeded to secondary school in Makuleke without any birth certificates. At the age of 18, the three applied for identity documentation, but these were not processed for a lack of information.

A local headman helped by issuing confirmation letters stating that they were residents of Makuleke, but this did not help much. In June this year, they approached the Limpopo Show Foundation (LSF), asking for

help. The director of the Limpopo Show foundation, Mr Lytton Mabalane, accompanied them to the Home Affairs offices in Malamulele, where he succeeded in registering them.

“We have waited patiently until the three received their identity books and birth certificates last week Monday. Now all chains are broken and the three can apply for registration at tertiary level or seek jobs,” he said.

One of the triplets, Patience, said “I’m really happy and all credit should go to the Limpopo Show Foundation for tirelessly keeping in contact with Home Affairs officers.”

Mr Phineus Mamathuntsha, a pensioner from the village who came up with the idea of utilising water from the spring, said he could not stomach the hardship the community was enduring, especially when he saw the young children having to carry heavy water containers up and down the hills. “It was also becoming increasingly unsafe for the villagers to go down the river to fetch water because people with ulterior motives took advantage of the situation and attacked them.”

One of the residents, Mr Given Mamuthubi, said he was comfortable with the arrangement, as he could now access water without having to go to the trouble of carrying a full bucket over a long distance.

Members who could not raise the R50 to contribute are still forced to fetch water from the river, which is about three kilometres from the village.

The spokesperson for the Vhembe District Municipality, Mr Matodzi Ralushai, said the municipality would find ways to assist the many communities around Vhembe “over both [the] short and long term”.

Community members from Matsa village in the Nzhelele area have devised their own plan to secure clean drinking water. They collected money and are now diverting water from a nearby mountain spring.

For the past 20 years, the community of Matsa in the Nzhelele area has been without clean drinking water.

Two years ago, water pipes were installed at the village, but nothing more came of this venture. The villagers were forced to rely on water from a contaminated fountain.

The lack of water forced the community to come up with a “Plan B” for them to have water for household use. Each household contributed R50 and from these contributions, pipes were purchased to draw water from a fountain at the top of the nearby mountain to supply this basic amenity to families.

Nzimande was invited to a career-guidance exhibition, held at Joe Matsila Lodge on Friday, 22 October. The event was organised by local traditional leader Vhamusanda Vho-Livhuwani Matsila.

Different universities, colleges and NSFAS representatives shared useful information with the learners.

“Government, as well as many private companies, offer bursaries to those who are willing to work hard,” said the minister. He warned against teenage pregnancies and encouraged the pupils to focus on their goals in life.

“Education changes lives for the better. It is the only tool to fight against poverty and to develop communities.”

According to Nzimande, learners need motivation, especially during this time of the year. “It’s very good that we have a caring traditional leader like Matsila.”

Nzimande told learners that they could succeed, irrespective of a poor background.

“Always be true to yourself, focus on your studies, and study

hard. Know where you come from, as it will always help you to know where you want to go.

Do not keep your goals small; aim high and always perform to your level best,” he said.

Vhamusanda Vho-Livhuwani Matsila said that the initiative was to help disadvantaged pupils in the community. “We are planning to do it annually. This will help learners to focus on their education without any distractions,” he said.

He urged learners to make education their key to a bright future and pure wisdom. “To all my Grade 12 learners, you must focus on your books.

Next year, you must go to universities. We don’t want to see you in the same class.”

According to Limpopo MEC for Education Ms Polly Boshielo, Limpopo’s matrics are ready for their final exams, which started on 27 October.

In a media statement, Boshielo says she believes that the learners will continue to do well this year, despite the challenges presented by the Covid-19 pandemic. Strict Covid-19 protocols will be implemented at the 1 609 examination centres across the province. These centres can accommodate a total of 106 564 full-time and 35 595 part-time candidates.

The MEC says the security around exam papers has been beefed up to ensure that no cheating takes place. “We have improved on the level of security on papers. We are convinced that Limpopo is ready, with the majority of educators having been vaccinated. Our examination centres are not going to be super spreader events,” she says.

The maximum size of any classroom will be 30 candidates at a time, with one

metre distancing between students. Masks must be worn at all times. Candidates who test positive for Covid-19 will be allowed to sit with other such candidates in a separate hall. Hand sanitisers will be provided and sanitising and temperature screening at all entry points will be compulsory. Examiners who display Covid-19 symptoms will be released immediately.

The Limpopo Premier, Stan Mathabatha, wished all the Grade 12 learners success and

all the very best as they begin their final examinations. “We urge the learners to study hard but also to give themselves time to rest. We also appeal to parents not to put too much pressure, but to provide support and encouragement. We want all our learners to do well in the exams. However, there are many opportunities for learners who do not do as well, such as rewriting, or schools and colleges where they can learn all sorts of skills,” Mathabatha said.

Real men will support their spouses

By Tshifhiwa Mukwevho As the year 2021 draws to a close, the managing director of Munna Ndi Nnyi, Mr Bardwell Mufunwaini, is sending a strong message to men from all over the Vhembe District to give their spouses the moral support they need to maintain stable, happy families.

Mufunwaini believes that men must get more involved in the welfare of their children.

He said that this involvement should already start during the pregnancy stage, not just after the child is born, so that the child arrives in a loving family, instead of just a lonely world.

“We are encouraging men to often visit their wives in maternity wards and be there

when they give birth, to welcome their offspring into this world,” he said. “This helps men to bond with both mother and child, and then the family’s bond is that of a head to body, which cannot be separated.”

Mufunwaini led the organisation’s maternity-visiting programme that visited pregnant women in the pre- and post-natal stages in hospitals.

According to him, many women admitted that their husbands hardly ever visited them or called them while they were in hospital.

“The women were asked if their male partners were giving them the relevant support. If not, we would call the man right away and ask him to get involved fully with the arrival of the newborn.”

Mufunwaini said that society still had to deal with the challenge of women being left alone to rear children by themselves.

He said that employed men could nowadays apply for compassionate leave to accompany their wives or partners to the hospital, so they had no reason not to give their full support.

“When the new-born opens his or her eyes for the first time, it should see both parents - not only the mother. Men must also take some time to bathe their young children, play with them and feed them,” he said. “Men’s responsibilities don’t have to end with providing food for their children. Fathers must get involved in the social lives of their children to teach them strong morals and a positive attitude towards life,” he said.

Musina gets two extra ambulances

By Bernard Chiguvare The Limpopo Department of Health availed two ambulances to Musina’s Emergency Medical Services (EMS) last week after the communities voiced their concern about the lack of functional ambulances. One of the vehicles will be focussing on Musina’s immediate communities, while the other one will be utilised for rural areas around Musina.

This follows a meeting between one of the local community structures, Musina To the Front, and the Limpopo Department of Health last week to address the issue of fully operational ambulance services in Musina.

According to Musina To the Front, a number of incidents where Musina’s EMS failed the community have occurred.

Reekson Matamela, secretary general of To the Front, said an 18-year-old boy was stabbed on 17 October and died. In trying to rescue the youth, To the

Front called the EMS at around 10:00, but could not get hold of anyone there. In July this year, Rakgadi Alucia Maphaha died at her home in Nancefield.

When the family called the emergency services, they were told that none of the ambulances worked.

Considering these two unfortunate incidents, the department agreed to send two functional ambulances.

According to a document that

was shown to this newspaper in confidence, the Department of Health has already engaged with organised labour regarding the matter of personnel shortages too.

In 2018, Denga was first princess in the Miss Capricorn Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) pageant. Last year, she ended as a finalist in the Miss Culture International South Africa pageant and in September this year she was crowned as Miss Nandoni Villa 2021 Queen.

Asked what had prompted her to participate in these modelling competitions, Denga answered, “Modelling teaches young women to believe in

themselves.” Despite feeling very self-conscious while growing up, she now firmly believes in her own capabilities and that involving herself in different modelling competitions has earned her a position in the Miss Limpopo Province semi-finalists for 2022.

“I dream about becoming Miss South Africa one day,” Denga said. With the prize money she wins from beauty pageants, she wants to uplift the youth in her community by establishing an NGO and rope in other ladies from the modelling industry.

By Kaizer Nengovhela Madombidzha Try Again held Madombidzha Arsenal to a goalless draw in the MMK Administrators Stream E league match played at the Madombidzha Grounds on Saturday.

Arsenal played entertaining football from the onset, but their strikers were unlucky.

Their right flank, Ntendeni Ratshikhopha, missed an opportunity in the 10th minute.

After beating two defenders in a row, he shot aimlessly from inside the box. The ball went far wide, much to the disappointment of the team’s fans.

NATURE OF THE ACTIVITY The Endangered Wildlife Trust proposes to develop a 4x4 Vehicle access track for access to the Moss and Gawsworth properties, which are all owned and managed by Endangered Wildlife Trust (EWT).The track is less than 4m width and will mostly run along existing hiking trails and will join existing farm road. On completion of the initial rack build, drainage humps will be built and in some areas, small 1,5m x40 cm concrete strips will be put into the track. The project entails the development access 4x4 track on the area total Medike Nature Reserve (Approximately 3.5550 –hectares)

Soccer extravaganza waits at Rabali Stadium activity on Saturday afternoon. Two matches will be played there.

This weekend marks the start of the Blackpool FC, formerly known as ABC Motsepe League programme.

Venda Football Academy, will host The Rabali Stadium will be a hive of Munaca FC in a game scheduled to start at 13:00. Blackpool are set to make Munaca pay for the 0-1 defeat they suffered at the hands of Mikhado FC in their Nedbank Cup semi-final match at the Seshego Stadium last Saturday.

Mikhado FC will welcome the rookies, Vondwe XI Bullets, later in the afternoon.

Vondwe XI Bullets were campaigning in the SAB League last season. They got promoted to the higher division after their superb performance in the SAB League provincial promotional playoff tournament staged at the Thohoyandou Stadium about three months ago.

Mikhado’s right back, Piere Mpumelelo, will be available for selection. He was given his marching orders in their game against Mpheni Home Defenders at the same venue two weeks ago.

Mpheni Home Defenders will entertain Musina United at the Louis Trichardt High School grounds. The combination of Gift Nemutandani and Lesley Maluma in the Home Defenders’ midfield is expected to keep the defenders of Musina running for cover for the better part of the game. The other newcomers, Emmanuel FC, will have a date with Giyani Happy Boys at the Giyani Stadium. Tubatse United will undertake a journey to Groblersdal. They will meet Denilton Callies at the Groblersdal Rugby Stadium.

Eleven Fast Tigers will fight for league points with Phinnet City FC at the Makgoka Sports Grounds outside Polokwane. The match between Magezi FC and Mighty FC will be played the Manamela Stadium outside Polokwane. Ditlou FC will play against The Dolphins FC at the Groblersdal Rugby Stadium in the only match that will be played on Friday afternoon.

Teams ready for the Marindi tournament

By Kaizer Nengovhela The final matches in the Marindi Tournament will be played at the Tshiozwi and Ravele Grounds on Saturday and Sunday. The tournament caters for eight teams playing under the banner of Makhado Local Football Association.

The champions will receive R4 000, while R2 500 will be waiting for the team that obtains the second position. The third- and fourth-placed teams will receive R1 000 each and the four teams knocked out in the first matches will each get R500.

In the first fixture at Tshiozwi on Saturday, Mubva All Stars will play against Gogobole Bucs at 10:00.

The following match will be between Ravele Highlanders and Sinthumule Dangerous Stars at 12:00.

At 14:00, Hollywood Mabaleng FC

will meet Ravele Black Dragons, and at 16:00, Tshiozwi Dynamos will play against Tshiozwi Mates.

When asked about their level of readiness for the tournament, the spokesperson for Mates, Mr David Mpuru, said they were ready for whatever heat they might come across in the tournament. He said that all his players were razor sharp.

Mr Steven Mukhudi, manager of Dynamos, said that they had put aside some attractive incentives for the players in case they managed to win the tournament. He stated that the team had been training hard for the past weeks.

According to the manager of Hollywood Mableng, Mr Gwasda Nedzamba, everything was going well with their preparations. Mr Master Madzhie of Ravele Black Dragons said that his players were ready for any team. According to him, his team will be the champions at the end of matches.

Magau were clearly going to collect full points right from the start as Breakers were outclassed in all departments. The absence of the Breaker’s playmaker, Fhumulani Kubayi, was quickly felt as one was there to win and distribute balls from the middle of the park.
