By Andries van Zyl & Isabel Venter Residents of Makhado (Louis Trichardt) woke to scenes of destruction on Wednesday morning, following a violent wind storm, accompanied by thundershowers on Tuesday evening.

Although not of the same magnitude as Hurricane Sandy which hit America’s eastern seaboard this week, the storm was quickly dubbed Hurricane Sandy Lite.

The storm caused a massive power outage in town, and by late Wednesday morning, the Makhado Municipality was still struggling to restore the power supply to many parts of town.

The storm left a path of devastation in its wake, uprooting trees, blowing off rooftops and causing walls to collapse. Many streets were also left almost inaccessible as a result of debris.

Sentencing of businessman postponed yet again As the slaughter of South African rhinos continues, the wheels of justice keep on turning at a slow pace.

The sentencing of businessman Yahya Shoeb Jiwa of Makhado (Louis Trichardt) has yet again been placed on hold.

The 45-year-old Jiwa appeared in the Musina Regional Court last Friday. He had already pleaded guilty in July this year on charges relating to restricted activities on a special protected species without the necessary permits. Jiwa was arrested in February last year when he tried to buy rhino horns from a police agent.

Since pleading guilty, Jiwa has been awaiting his sentence. Instead, his defence team has asked for yet another postponement. They requested a presentencing report to be compiled by the Department of Correctional Services to support a petition to ask the court for correctional supervision of Jiwa rather than a jail sentence.

During Friday’s court appearance, Jiwa’s lawyer fervently denied allegations that he was delaying his clients sentencing. The lawyer further informed

the court that he was only in possession of Jiwa’s probation officer’s report and that the report from Correctional Services would only be completed by the end of November.

The court granted a final postponement and warned Jiwa that his sentencing would continue with or without the report. He will have to appear in the Musina court again on 9 January.

In another, unrelated case, Dawie Groenewald and his nine co-accused were also back in the Pretoria High Court on Friday, in connection with the State’s seizure of their assets to the value of R55 million. The seizure was an interim order that was granted by the High Court in May this year. All 10 are charged with, among others, offences relating to the illegal trade in rhino horn. During Friday’s court proceedings, the State brought an application to have the seizure order made permanent.

At the same time, the State’s curator also asked that the assets, including the rhinos and game on Groenewald’s farm, be sold. The curator said he did not know how to farm and that he was afraid for the animals’ well-being.

The team’s defence lawyer, Mr Hennie Erwee of Musina, argued in court that the seizure order was granted without the court’s being in possession of all the facts of the case. Still on the subject of rhinos, the trial of the five men accused of illegally hunting rhinos in the Alldays area is set to begin early next year.

The five, January Machava (37), Juda Nyembe (38), Matthew Pedro Ngwenya (42), Thomas Sibanda (33) and Humbulani Reason Matutu (29), appeared in the Louis Trichardt Regional Court on Monday.

They are charged with three counts of the hunting of specially protected wild animals and two counts of picking up or removing dead wild animals.

The charges were brought against them when they allegedly killed two rhinos and attempted to kill a third and hack off the horns.

On Monday, the State withdrew its case against Matutu after he had decided to become a state witness. The case against the remaining four was postponed until 11 and 12 February of next year. Machava, Nyembe and Ngwenya are out on bail, while Sibanda remains in custody.

There were also some new developments in 39-year-old Jacques Els’s case.

Els, who was found guilty on charges relating to the illegal hunting, trafficking and possession of rhino horns without the necessary permits, has already served four months of his eight-year jail sentence. He might be released on bail soon, however, after his petition for leave to appeal against his sentence was granted by the High Court.

A date for his bail application has yet to be set by the Louis Trichardt Regional Court.

Bermuda’s Boer POW’s remembered The Bermudan government sent a plaque to the Zoutpansberg Skirmishes Museum in the Soutpansberg area.

Mr Andrew Birmingham of Bermuda presented the plaque, a coat of arms of Bermuda, to Mr Charles Leach, local historian, tour guide and author, at a function at the Lalapanzi Hotel on 27 October.

At the event, Birmingham spoke on the boer prisoners of war who were interned on the Bermuda Islands for a year from June 1901. Bermuda is in the western Atlantic ocean and it took a month for the prisoners to sail the 12 800 km.

“The Boer POWs got the same rations as the British army. They were treated with some dignity,” Birmingham said at the function, attended by people from Louis Trichardt, Polokwane and Johannesburg.

There were 4 619 boer prisoners of war, of whom 850 were under the age of 19. The youngest was six years old and the oldest 78. Of the prisoners, 35 died on Bermuda and six died en route. The deaths comprise less than 1%. In comparison, the concentration camp in the former Pietersburg had around 3 600 inmates, mostly women and children,

and 666 (nearly 20%) of them died.

“The low percentage of deaths in Bermuda is a testimony to the excellent medical care that was given on the islands,” Birmingham said. As long as the prisoners adhered to military rule, they had relative freedom to conduct their own affairs. They engaged in many activities, including a debating society, gymnastics, fishing and farming.

“Their greatest legacy, however, was the souvenirs they made, the bulk of which had been carved out of Bermudan cedar wood. They were industrious and inventive. Their articles represented life in South Africa. They made, among other things, wagons, tiny ploughs, goblets and a small boot with a snake popping up, symbolising their guerrilla warfare. The boots with the snakes, as symbol of their biting the British army, have been found in St Helena, India, Ceylon and Bermuda, where the prisoners of war were,” Birmingham said.

The subgroups, the “bittereinders” and “hensoppers”, were kept on different Bermudan islands to avoid conflict. When the Anglo Boer war ended on 31 May, 1902, and the prisoners returned home to South Africa, the “bittereinders” (about 300) refused to sign a certificate pledging fealty to the British King. The last “bittereinder” in Bermuda died in 1927.

Among the prisoners was a medical doctor, Dr August Schulenburg. His son, Dr Carl Schulenburg, not only visited Bermuda where his father had been detained, but also was one of South Africa’s foremost authorities on the Bushveldt Carbineers (BVC). In writing his authoritative book on the BVC, Leach made extensive use of the Schulenburg Collection, housed in the National Army Museum in London. When Leach visited London in an effort to scrutinise these valuable sources, he was not allowed to do so. UK-born Andy Birmingham of Bermuda, however, had made copies for Leach before he donated the Schulenburg Collection to Mr Andrew Birmingham (left) of Bermuda the London Museum.

“In this age of technology, we can create celebratory displays that are thrilling and joyful without endangering ourselves, others, pets, wildlife, property and the environment. For too long, elderly people, children and animals have been traumatised

by the anti-social behaviour and danger involving fireworks,” the ladies state. They realise, however, that fireworks will remain a holiday fixture in most communities around the world, despite the increased acceptance of alternatives such as laser light shows and fairy light processions set to music. “ So, pet lovers, speak to your veterinarian to medicate your pets,” urge the ladies.

Tien bome is hierdie week geplant om vir die afkap van een ou reus te vergoed.

Louis Trichardt Superspar het in September ‘n groot OosAfrikaanse mahonieboom van so tussen 30 en 40 meter hoog op hul parkeerterrein verwyder, nadat die wortels die plaveisel begin oplig het.

Lede van die publiek was ontsteld dat dit noodsaaklik was dat dié pragtige boom afgekap word.

Die eienaar van die Superspar, mnr. Luke Enslin, het toestemming by die grondeie­naar, mnr.

Eddie Da Silva, verkry om die boom af te kap.

Enslin het ook die Departement van Omgewingsake in die saak geken as ‘n gebaar van welwillendheid. Omgewingsake se mnr. Alan McMurtrie se voorstel aan hom was dat hy 10 bome aanplant vir die een wat afgekap moes word. Enslin het McMurtrie gevra om ‘n keuse te maak waar die tien bome aangeplant moet word, maar McMurtrie het die keuse aan Enslin oorgelaat.

“Ek het op die hoërskool be­ sluit, omdat ek gedink het die bome sal goeie waarde toevoeg vir die skool en die kinders.

Dit sal ook die omgewing op die skoolterrein verfraai,” het Enslin gesê.

Die rooi-essenhout is ‘n prag­ tige immergroen boom, bekend vir sy digte skadu. Dié boom word sowat 20 meter hoog. Hy groei ook vinnig, sowat een tot

twee meter per jaar. Die groot dag vir die aanplanting het op 29 Oktober plaasgevind, met die plant van die eerste boom.

Vyf van die bome sal op die bult tussen die seunskoshuis en die skool geplant word en vyf aan die oostekant van Leeu­park.

Die hoofleiers van Hoërskool Louis Trichardt plant die eerste van 10 rooi-essen-houtbome. Voor is Chris van Wyk (links) en Kofi Apea-Adu (hoofseun) besig. Agter, van links na regs, is Francois Mostert, mnr. Enslin, Talita Kloppers (hoofmeisie), Carin Bezuidenhout, Tsakani Baloyi en mnr. Theo Muller (adjunkhoof).

Tafelronde Zoutpansberg 66 van Makhado (Louis Trichardt) het die afgelope naweek vir die tweede keer in drie jaar as wenners van die Clint en Michelle Hayward Vlotresies op die Tzaneendam uit die stryd getree. Die resies is gehou ter nagedagtenis aan die Hayward-egpaar wat in 2004 wreed vermoor is by die Mountain View Hotel, met Clint wat aanvanklik die resies begin het. Na die egpaar se dood het die resies vir etlike jare nie plaasgevind nie. Vanjaar het die Tafelrondes van Louis Trichardt, Tzaneen en Phalaborwa om die trofee meegeding.

This year’s prize money once again totals R6 000, with 12 winning pictures to be chosen for each of the year’s months. Winning entries will be published in an A2format 2013 calendar, which will be used by the Zoutpansberger and Limpopo Mirror for marketing purposes. The calendars will also be sold to the public at a minimal fee.

FV/KFV Aanleg Fase 1 – Tot 75 MW BioTherm Energy (Edms.) Bpk. Die projek word voorgestel op die plaas Gotha 102 M, Musina Plaaslike Munisipaliteit.

Voorgestelde akitiwiteit: Biotherm Energy (Edms.) Bpk. stel die oprigting van ’n kommersiële fotovoltaïese sonkragaanleg voor (wat hetsy van fotovoltaïese (FV) of konsentrerende fotovoltaïese (KFV) tegnologie gebruik sal maak) op ’n terrein naby Musina, Limpopo-provinsie.

Die aanleg sal die volgende infrastruktuur insluit: - Fotovoltaïese (FV) of Konsentrerende Fotovoltaïese (KFV) panele met ’n uitvoervermoë van tot 75 MW. Die voorstel is dat die panele tot 20 m hoog sal wees (sou KFV tegnologie gebruik word).

- ’n Nuwe substasie op die terrein om die krag van die aanleg af na Eskom se kragrooster te evakueer via die Venetia Substasie wat langs die voorgestelde ontwikkelingsterrein geleë is. Die alternatief sou wees om direk by die bestaande Transmissielyn in te skakel wat met die noordoostelike grens van die terrein langs loop.

- Monteerstrukture van hetsy vasgestampte staalsuile of suile met voorafvervaardigde betonfondamente om die FV/KFV panele te dra.

- Kabels tussen die projekkomponente, ondergronds gelê waar prakties moontlik.

- Interne toegangspaaie en ’n heining.

- ’n Werkswinkelgebied vir instandhouding, berging en kantore.

Hier verskyn Le Cornu saam met Op Sondag, 21 Oktober, het Tafelronde Zoutpansberg 66 besoek ontvang vanaf Gonubie Round die span, wat hul splinternuwe hemde vertoon. Die afrigters is PJ Strydom (links ) en Francois Table 182 ter ondersteuning van die nasionale projek genaamd Wings and Wishes. Die projek se Nel. Braambos Laerskool se Graad 4 tot Graad 7 leerders het vanaf 9 tot 11 Oktober die Schoemansdal Omgewingsopvoedingsentrum besoek, waar klem gelê is op leierskap. Van die aktiweite was “Formule 1” (waar die groepe hulle eie motor moes bou om mee resies te jaag), “Minute to fun it” (waar die leerders se vaardighede met onder meer balanseertoue getoets is) en ook “abseiling”. Die leerders het baie geleer en baie goed saamgewerk. “Baie dankie aan Schoemansdal se personeel wat ons so hartlik ontvang het en die paar dae so interessant gemaak het,” sê die groep.

Perfect weather, well-behaved horses, keen riders and an enthusiastic audience all contributed to a spectacular finish to the recent summer gymkhana at the Rondebosch Riding School outside Makhado (Louis Trichardt). Organiser Sarah Coronaios thanked all who attended, with special mention of Danie and Val Louw for bringing their beautiful Friesians and carriage, the two faultless time-keepers, Angela Ball and Jernay McLeod, Elizma Pohl for her incredibly hard work at producing the gorgeous rosettes, Kos Coronaios for working tirelessly in the background to keep everyone fed and refreshed, and of course, last but not least, the school´s incredible pupils who put so much time and effort into making the day happen.
