Vhembe’s golden runner
Vhembe’s own long-distance champion, Lutendo Mapoto from Muwaweni, received a hearty welcome on his return from the Com rades ultra-marathon. Mapoto won a gold medal after he finished in the overall 10th position on Sunday, in a time of 05:47:20. (See story on page 2)
The traditional leader of Mafukani village, Vhamusanda Vho-Ndileni Nemafukani has confirmed that the learners who blocked roads off with burning tyres last Thursday (25 August), were angry with him for clamping down on drug suppliers in and around Matavhela Secondary School. This came after Nemafukani was alerted by members of the community that certain spaza shops were selling ganja and mbanzhe to learners at the school. “When I heard this, I summoned all the spaza shop owners to report to my place, and they did. I told all of them about my concerns around drugs being sold to learners, and warned them of the consequences, should they continue to sell ganja to school children. After consulting with the traditional council in the village, we agreed that spaza shop owners must stop selling anything and first reapply for their licenses to sell their products in the village. Especially the spaza shops next to the school. This strategy is to catch the culprits out,” Nemafukani said.According to the chairperson of Matavhela’s school governing body (SGB), Mr Rendani Madamalala, the rampage started after a learner was found with dagga at the school. He was interviewed on Monday, 29 August, shortly after a meeting with the school principal, the SGB and Vhamusanda Vho Nema fukani. Madamalala said that, after it was reported that learners were using drugs at the school, the principal called a security company in to search learners at the gate. (Contd on page 4)
The well known runner Bethuel Netshifhefhe of the Murray & Roberts Running Club said Mapoto deserved the honour, having represent ed Vhembe and the Limpopo Province so well. “As a club, we are very proud of and happy for him. We hope his achievement also inspires others to work hard, so we can produce more winners from this part of the country,” he said.

Isaac Mudau relocated from Shayandima and settled at Maniini, outside Thohoy andou, where he presently resides. He is the owner of Vhadau Funerals and Tomb stones.Wiseman Baloyi, on the other hand, is regarded as a very distinguished painter around Saselamani village. It is no coincidence that the two suspects know each other as they are said to be half broth ers. Apparently, Baloyi’s mother was married to an other man before she married Andries Mudau. Baloyi is said to have been born out of the previous marriage. In the African tradition, Mudau and Baloyi would be referred to as “brothers”, even though they were born from different fathers.Thelate Moses Maluleke’s brother, Humphrey Magakula, said he was very disappoint ed in Mudau and Baloyi as they were both known to the family. “Wiseman Baloyi grew up under our watch while he stayed at the neighbouring Ntlhaveni Block H village. We know him as a humble person, not capable of what he allegedly did. He was recom mended for a painting job at my brother’s house and did a wonderfulAccordingjob.”to Magakula, he was with Mudau weeks before the murder of his brother. “We had a family bereave ment, and I sat with him and negotiated the burial prices as we used his company. I was so impressed by his business acumen. It is still very hard for me to believe they could allegedly be so cruel. I am ter ribly disappointed,” Magakula said.On 25 and 26 August, both Mudau and Baloyi’s bail appli cations were abandoned. They were remanded in custody with Shumani Nemadodzi and Avhatakali Mulaudzi, whose bail applications had also been abandoned. All four suspects are to appear together on 19 September.

The murder case of the late Collins Chabane mayor, Mo ses Big Moss Maluleke, has drawn a lot of interest from the local community over the past few weeks. What a lot of people wanted to know, is who exactly are the suspects and where are they from? Maluleke was shot and killed in what was believed to have been a robbery at his home in Shikundu on 21 July this year. Four suspects have been arrested so far in con nection with the murder and charged with robbery with ag gravating circumstances, mur der, attempted murder, and possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition. When the first two suspects, Shumani Nemadodzi (47) and Avhatakali Mulaudzi (42), both from Duthuni, were ar rested, the police announced that it was only a matter of time before more arrests would be made. True to their word, two more suspects were linked to the incident and apprehended a week later. Isaac Avhatakali Mudau (36) and Wiseman Baloyi (36) were arrested at Vuwani and Saselamani respectively on Friday, 12 August. When Mudau and Baloyi made their first appearance on 15 August, the Malamulele Magistrate’s Court was filled to capacity. Angry residents wanted to get a glimpse of the two alleged fugitives but were not allowed inside the courtroom. Limpopo Mirror did some research on Mudau and Baloyi and found an interesting connection between the two men, besides the fact that they are of the same age and that both are well known business people.Isaac Avhatakali Mudau was born at Shayandima and comes from a very religious family. His father, Andries Savhadina Mudau, was a well respected ZCC priest. He also owned a few businesses.

The Department of Labour and Employment’s branch in Louis Trichardt had to close their office on Friday, 19 August, because of yet another water outage in the area. Its ablution facilities were said to be smelling so foul that it posed health hazards to the department’s employees as well as Peopleclients.from the Nzhelele, Bungeni and Kutama Sinthu mule areas also rely on the Lou is Trichardt branch for service. Scores of clients showed up at the building, only to be met with a notice left in the office window, informing clients that the office was closed until further notice. Clients were referred to either Thohoyandou or Musina’s labour offices for any labour related services.
The Department of Labour and Employ ment in Louis Trichardt opened its doors again on Thursday, 25 August, after they had been closed from the previous Friday (19th) because of water outages in the town area.
“This is my tenth time coming back to this office and failing to get any service. Last month they told us it was a network problem. Today they are telling us it is water. This is really a problem,” said Mr Godfrey Ramadzhanzha from Bungeni.Ramadzhanzha had to apply for unemployment insurance fund (UIF) payments. He opted to visit the office because he is not able to use the online facility. “I have no smartphone, no data or the knowledge to use the online system,” he said. Ramadzhanzha pays a total of R80 for a trip to Louis Trich ardt. He said he did not have any money left to make another trip to the office. Limpopo Mirror spoke to Mr Matodzi Ralushai, the spokesperson for the Vhembe District Municipality (which is the water authority for the Makhado Municipality) on Tuesday (23rd) about the most recent water outage in Louis Trichardt town. He said that this was the result of burst water pipes at one of their projects, but he could not be specific as to which project he was referring to. All he said was that they were busy fixing the pipes. “This has unfortunately affected businesses in Louis Trichardt Town. The contractor is still on site and busy fixing the pipes. Once done, the sys tem will immediately provide water to the building and other affected areas in town,” Ralushai said. The Limpopo manager of the Public Servants Association (PSA), Ms Patricia Matlhadisa, condemned the Labour Depart ment for not closing the office sooner. Some of the union’s members work at this office. Matlhadisa regarded this as negligence and compromising the health of the employees and clients. She called on the department to make use of alternative measures, such as putting up Jojo water tanks. The office reopened again on Thursday, 25 August.

At the first split, at Lyn nfield Park, Mapoto was in due to logistical problems, counted to our disadvantage. All in all I had a good race, having attained 10th position. I was the first from Limpopo to finish the race. I’m happy, very excited. It still feels like I am dreaming. I can’t believe this has happened to me,” he said.
Louis Trichardt residents have been very negatively affected by the intermittent water supply the past few months. The scarcity of wa ter not only affected residen tial areas, but also hampered the activities of the business community and government departments.
For a talented full time athlete such as Mapoto, who regularly participates in differ ent races, things can become very challenging financially. He is still looking for a sponsor to help him cover his travelling expenses and running shoes. Those who would like to help can call him at 071 322 0704.

We are ap pealing to anybody with infor mation to please come forward. The information might be able to assist us in unravelling the mystery,” he said. When news of the grisly find was made known, it caused consternation among some members of the community. Ms Khathutshelo Netshituni from the local traditional council said that they, as community leaders, were greatly saddened by the news of Munzhedzi’s death. “When the family re ported him missing, the whole community helped search for him. We had hoped he would be found alive. We do, however, in the midst of it all, commend the community for remaining calm and not being led by their emotions. We need peace in this area, and the only way this can come about is when we as the community work hand in glove with the police,” she said. Munzhedzi will be buried at Tshituni on Saturday, 3 September.

The CEO of Sekhukhune TVET College in Limpopo, Mr Tebogo Kekana, who was one of the guest speakers at Vhembe TVET College’s annual stakeholders en gagement gala dinner, urged stakeholders to be in contact with the seven TVET colleges in the province, so that they could formulate partnerships in placements for students and lecturers. Kekana, who is also the Lim popo chairperson of the South African Public Colleges Organi zation (SAPCO), was joined by the principal of Vhembe TVET College, Ms Basani Hlekane, ETDP SETA, Department of Higher Education and Training officials and other stakeholders at the event, which was held in Vhembe TVET College’s Makwarela Campus Hall on Wednesday night, 24 August. We want to develop good relationships with stakeholders to see to it that the students from our colleges get more practical experience, so they can get better employment opportunities,” said Kekana. Hlekane was excited that the gala dinner was held at her college. “We urge students to start their own businesses and not only look for employment, as we live in a job scarce world. We will be very happy if our students could be absorbed and get training, which will go a long way in making them employable,” said Hlekane. Representing the Vhembe Students Council, Portia Khosa said they appreciated the arrangement by the colleges to help them engage with prospective stakeholders. Local government
Nephawe said that, if local government forsook the IDP, achieving developmental objectives would be difficult as the IDP gave an overall framework for development. He emphasised the impor tance for all community members and stakeholders to attend government meetings, so that their voices could be heard. “One of the things that lead to confusion is when government calls meetings, (but) only a few people attend. Those few people are the ones who take decisions on behalf of everyone who did not attend the meeting. When the implementation stage starts, the people who did not attend the meeting come out and raise concerns that govern ment is implementing projects without consulting them. These challenges can only be resolved if we all attend these meetings in large numbers whenever we are invited to doThatso.” being said, he praised the good turnout at last week’s IDP meeting. “When people and stakeholders attend these types of meetings, it gives us a clear understanding of what is actually happening on the ground because people raise genuine issues that they know of. It also becomes easier for us to make follow ups as the issues are brought to our attention through the correct channels. These meetings also play a vital developmental role as we get issues directly from the affected people, instead of getting written reports that do not fully explain the actual challenges on the ground.” He thanked the community members and stakeholders for taking the time to engage with the“Wemunicipality.willalsoappreciate it if you give your full support when your ward councillors arrange meetings in your re spective wards to engage and advise your political repre sentatives on service delivery issues. This will also help to avoid unnecessary protests as we will all have a common understanding of what is hap pening in our locality,” he said.

I realised that l would have to plant more vegetables and rear more chick ens then, as the demand was increasing.”Hesayshis love of farming had been instilled by his late grandfather, Joe Dzebu, who planted tobacco. “When we were young, we used to work in my grandfather’s tobacco fields all day long. When he passed on, my late father, Jameson Dzebu, continued planting vegetables, and this encour aged me to follow suit. Since I retired, farming has become my life. The only day I don’t farm is on a Sunday because I have to go to church then. I start my work at 05:00 every morning and stop at around 18:00; something I never even did while I worked full time. During my days as a civil ser vant, we worked from 08:00 to 16:30. Vho Tshavhungwe’s son, Humbulani Omo Musandiwa, the principal at Tshiseluse lu Primary School, said his mother had been his role model in life, doing all that she could for her children to become independent. “She was a hard worker. She brewed traditional beer to pay for our school fees and made and sold mud bricks. She planted all kinds of crops and decorated people’s homes with cow dung to make ends meet. She had fulfilled every thing that she had to in life as we are all grown up now and able to work for ourselves. We will miss her cleanliness, love and smile, but her contribu tions to our lives will never be forgotten,” he said.

We have to make this area a no go area for crimi nals and human trafficking in particular, so that they will not have anywhere to hide. We know that things will be fine if we consult our Saviour,” said Mulaudzi.Arepresentative of the Pas tors’ Forum, Pastor Andries Thukhutha, said that the fam ilies’ problems were everyone’s problem. “We will continue to pray for the families and their lost loved ones, so that they can be found,” he said.

He said that, as a respected elder, villagers had depended on her for advice and the transmission of traditional and cultural practices. “Even I, as a traditional leader, used to consult her on various aspects of our tradition and culture. This is a wakeup call that we must start documenting our oral history, so that it can be preserved for our future gener ations,” he said.

The 25-year-old Tendani Law rence Maphiri from Vondwe Matatshe village outside Tho hoyandou has become a real inspiration for others in the area. Coming from an indigent family, he spent a whole year after he had finished school in 2015, looking for employ ment, without luck. Many of his peers had clashed with the law because of their involve ment in criminal activities, but Maphiri vowed to live a clean life instead, despite his poor financial background. Realising how slim his chances of finding a job were, the young man decided to take action him self. With the R300 he earned from digging a pit toilet for one of his neighbours, Maphiri bought three bags of cement and taught himself to make beau tifully decorated flowerpots of different shapes and sizes, which he now sells next to a busy road at Vondwe Matatshe. He said he was willing to share his skills with other youths for free if they were willing to learn. “I understand that there is a huge need for jobs in our country, and I want to play my part. I taught myself these skills, and I’m ready to pass them on to anyone who would like to start their own small business,” he said. Maphiri has a message for the young and unemployed who waste their time sitting around in the hope that the government might one day provide them with jobs. “These are tough economic times that require all of us to stand up. The food hikes make our lives even more difficult, and we need to do something to sustain ourselves. I appeal to my peers to swallow their pride and join me in this war against poverty and unemployment. You do not need a lot of cash to start your own thing. Every little bit can go a long way in making your life better.”
Munyembani got the idea from a television show and fell in love with it. “The artwork impressed me so much that I vowed to own it one day. At first, I tried to find someone who could do it for me, but no one had an idea what I was talking about. After a few months of thinking, I decided to do it myself, although I had no experience at all in this sort of crafting. I went out and looked for old tyres and started making the first chair for myself.
Tendani Lawrence Maphiri makes and sells beautifully deco rated flowerpots next to the road at Vondwe Matatshe village.
The chair was not completely to my satisfaction, so for the next three months I continued to work on it until I was finally satisfied,” he said. After he had completed his first coffee table and chair set, he shared the news on social media, and be fore long, people started calling him for orders. “Actually, I just wanted a set for myself, but people became interested and asked if I could make for them too. Some of the clients with cars even brought old tyres to me, which made it easier for me. In no time, more and more orders came in, but I could only do it in my spare time after work.” Luckily, Munyembani has a good relationship with local tyre workshops, so getting his material is no problem for him. “First, I clean and polish the dirty tyres.

Four-year-old Nyiko Chauke from Mal amulele has been crawling her way into the world of pageants since she was only a baby. Now this adorable little girl seems to have toddled her way into the hearts of many beauty enthusiasts as well. Nyiko was recently selected as a semi-finalist for the Little Miss Limpopo Province 2023 pageant, already making a name for herself in the modelling industry. The cheerful little contestant entered her first pageant, the Little Miss Lead SA in Polokwane, in 2020, when she was two years old. Unfortunately, she did not make the top 3, but this did not discourage her mother, the well known actress Patience Chauke, from entering her daughter in other pageants. Patricia says her daughter loves modelling. “I saw an advert for the Little Miss Limpopo Province and decided to take the chance. I entered her into the competition, and she was selected as a semi finalist out of 500 entries. She was so excited when she heard the news,” said the proud mother. Patricia says that the journey in the Little Miss Limpopo Province so far has already taught her daughter a lot. “They are given tasks to perform, like doing community work, and she is learning to give to the less privi leged at her young age. Seeing her put a smile on other people’s faces just melts my heart. I really believe that this competition will give my daughter the confidence to conquer life as she grows up.” Patricia wants to encourage other parents to allow their children to follow their dreams, what they love. “If your child has a dream of becoming a model – whether it is a pageant model, fashion or commercial model allow them to go for it. Opportunities don’t fall into your lap, you have to chase them,” she said.
Among the guests were Vhembe Executive Mayor Dowelani Nenguda, Minister in the Presidency Thembi Siweya, MEC for CoGHSTA Basikopo Makamu, chairperson of the Limpopo Provincial House of Traditional Leaders Hosi Pheni Ngobe and the mayor of the Collins Chabane Municipality, Shadrack Maluleke. In her address, Siweya talked about how the roles of tradi tional leaders had changed.
Entertainment Mashudu William Munyembani from Musina is imploring the public to join him in the war against pollution. He believes that by practicing recycling habits, people can keep the environment clean and contrib ute towards preserving natural resources. Munyembani does this by turning old car tyres into beautiful garden chairs and coffee tables, an initiative that has turned him into one of the most respected local artists. This he does in his spare time as he also has a full-time job as a security officer.

Pfano Castro Masimbane (22) from Makonde village outside Thohoyandou won his first award for his debut motivational book, titled Rock of Prayer, at this year’s AfriCAN Honoree Authors’ Awards. The event took place at the Genesis All Suite Conference Hotel in Johannesburg on 31 July. The AfriCAN Honoree Authors’ Awards is a global annual event. Masimbane was one of 150 nominees from different countries to be honoured with an award at the event, and he was beyond excited. He started writing in 2018, when he was still in Grade 10 at Tshivhase Secondary School. “My grandmother always told me about the importance of God’s Word, and it motivated me to share the Word of God with my fellow pupils in high school. It became a lifestyle to me and as long as the school environment allowed it, I continued doing it. During festive season recess, I had no one to share the Word of God with, so I thought maybe I should write a book, so that people could have positive messages to hold on to in their life. I realized that writing was the best way for one soul to communicate God’s mes sage to others. I was definitely inspired while I was writing this book,” he said. He thanked Anthea Thyssen, the host of the AfriCAN Honoree Authors’ Awards, for nominating him. Thyssen is an author herself who honours children and adult authors from all continents around the world. “This is all thanks to her, and it really means a lot to me, because this is the first big award for me.” Winning this award has inspired the young writer to write more books. “I am still going to write more books that will change people’s lives. All of my books will be in audio format too, so that it can be accessible to everyone, including those who cannot read,” he said. Besides writing, Masimbane is also a self taught graphic designer and an aspiring entrepreneur.

It has a very big market in Europe and Asia. People are also starting to look at it in large numbers here in South Africa. Donkey milk has a lot of un saturated fatty acids, especially lin oleic acid, and a low content of fat and cholesterol. It also has strong antioxidant activity, retracting the ageing process,” he said. Maluta said that donkey milk was also used to feed babies whose mothers had problems breastfeed ing. He said that, apart from the donkey milk market, which was in high demand at the moment, Africans had been using donkey milk to heal diseases, such as stom ach ache and food poisoning, since the beginning of time. Maluta said his department was also helping in educating people on the bee and fishing industries.

Our entrepreneurs Ms Thinamaano Nengov hela Nemakhavhani (39) does not believe that wom en should regard them selves as the weaker sex. She feels that, although hard labour is usually as sociated with men, women should work just as hard to empower themselves. After years of being unemployed, Nemakhavhani came to realize that she did not need money to start her own business. All she needed was already provided by Mother Nature for free, and thus, using mud from the soil and dirty water, she started making mud bricks from her home at Malavuwe Ha Matsika village, outside Thohoyandou.Despitepeople laughing at her at first, she contin ued working tirelessly in the scorching sun every day and started selling her mud bricks. Bit by bit, with the little money she saved from the sales she made, she started buying other build ing material, and eventually built her own beautiful 12 room house from her own mud bricks. When people realised the potential of her mud bricks, Nemakhavhani started getting more and more orders – even from clients outside her village. Although this trade has helped her to overcome poverty, she says it took a lot of hard work. “I dig the soil with a pick and hand hoe and mix the mud and water with my hands and legs. When the bricks have been made, I fetch wood from the mountain and make a fire. The bricks are then baked in the fire to make them stronger. Things became easier when the village leadership allocated a piece of land to me and fellow villagers to use for making our mud bricks, instead of do ing it from our homes.” She said that, since her business started growing, she has man aged to employ two permanent workers, as well as two casual workers to help when she has a lot of orders. “It really is a dirty job, but it offers a clean income. This muddy soil is my trea sure because it brings food to the table,” she said.Of course, business takes a dive at certain times, especially during the rainy season, but Nemakhavhani is prepared for that too. With her savings, she has also ventured into farming, and she presently has nine pigs. Besides this she sells children’s junk food and even has an informal hair salon that she runs from her home.

Mr Stephen Tshibidzo, the senior supervisor at Eskom in Louis Trichardt, advised residents to report households who tamper with or damage Eskom meters. “Residents must assist us by reporting meters that are on “Free Mode” to their nearest Eskom office, or call the Eskom con tact centre on 0860 037 566,” he said.
The meeting aimed to find a solution to combat crimes such as burglary and theft, and discuss ways to reduce the power failures that are mainly caused by illegal power connections or stolen cables. Community members also blamed the police for being absent and not assisting to curb Ms Joyce Simangwe convened the meeting with her committee and invited representatives of Waterval SAPS and Eskom to attend.During the meeting, one of the residents, Miss Mavis Mageza, claimed that the police station had a serious shortage of vehicles. She suggested that the community should have a satellite police station nearby to fast track service. “Even if you are mugged during the day, the police will not assist you be cause they don’t have enough vans to serve our communi ties, or so we are told when we report cases. If they can provide satellites, that would help the whole community,” shePolicesaid. spokesperson Ser geant Tshifhiwa Radzilani explained the situation around the availability of police vehicles, saying that vehicles were assigned according to the number of police officers on duty. She said that each police station is divided into sectors, with police officers assigned to these sectors and vehicles assigned according to the officers on duty. Waterval is di vided into three sectors. Sector One includes Elim, Mpheni, and nearby areas. Sector Two includes the Mbokota and Bungeni areas, and Sector Three the Mashamba and Muwaweni areas. “In this case you find police officers on duty who have to travel from Bungeni to Mashamba, then back to Elim. So, residents have to under stand the distances they have to travel,” Radzilani said. Another resident, Douglas Mafanele, complained that Eskom was not doing enough to discipline those guilty of illegal power connections and tampering with their meters when they conduct audits.

The structure also caters for the safety of rural Musina and con ducts regular outreach programmes to campaign for the safety in communities. On Friday, 19 August, MCP visited Matshena School to educate the learners on crime in their area and what to do, should they notice any criminal activity. MCP has a WhatsApp group that is being followed by more than 740 residents from the area. Lesiba was proud to say that, since the establishment of this structure, a gradual but no ticeable decline in crime could already be detected. Musina Town residents are encouraged to report crime via the WhatsApp group, so that it can be reported to the police as soon as possible. Those in the rural Musina area must report directly to their nearest police station, or call the Crime Stop number on 0800 10111.

“It is imperative that the Department demonstrates the capacity of tourism to address the triple challenges of unemployment, poverty and inequality. Youths, women, and people with disabilities immediately feel these challenges. During this year’s Tourism Month, it will be critical to expose and unveil key tourism projects that respond to issues of unemployment in our province. Travel and tourism sec tors should continue to make a dent in unemployment as the biggest employer of the sections of our population as alluded to above,” Mokone said. The executive mayor of Vhembe District, Cllr Dowelani Nenguda, said the district was the economic hub of the Limpopo Province. He was very excited that this year’s Heritage Day celebration event on 24 September 2022 will also be held at the Kalahari Waterfront.
In an effort to assist the police in curbing crime in Musina, a community structure, called Musina Crime Prevention (MCP), was established earli er this year. The chairperson of MCP, Mr Kenny Lesiba, said that the high crime rate in the Musi na area was starting to make everyone feel unsafe.
The structure con sists of 15 committee members whose mis sion is to make sure that residents enjoy a safe environment. A com munity meeting is held every week in either Nancefield, Mshongov ille, Matswale, Harper or Campbell to engage the communities on how to fight crime.

“We were shocked when Boxing SA said promoters tell them they pay boxers at least R120 000 for a title fight. They give them the money, but promoters are paying boxers as little as R4 000 for a fight, and less than R30 000 for a South African national title fight and pocket the rest. Promoters are exploiting us big time,” sheMulebasaid. said that Boxing SA promised that they were going to investigate the matter. She said, however, if a promoter asked for the same amount from big corporates, the government could not investigate as this was a transaction between the two parties. During the indaba, an allegations was made that judges were in some cases only paid R150 for a fight. “This was raised by a judge who started working with SA Boxing 33 years ago, before I was even born, and he is still paid such an amount today,” she said.

Two for Joy Ladies FC enhanced their promotion chances when they registered a historic 8-0 victory over Merwe United Ladies in their Sasol Women’s League match that was played at the Tshirenzheni Grounds on Sunday. Merwe were down and out throughout the game. They made only one goal attempt in the first half, making Two for Joy’s keeper, Nyiko Mafanela, more of a spectator for the better part of the game. Although the visitors did not show any appetite for goals, Two for Joy had blundered by maintaining their original pattern of attacking with two strikers. Two for Joy took 18 minutes to open their account. Munei Nemuramba, who scored a brace in the game, beat the keeper with a half volley after forcing her way through the defence of United. A scramble within Merwe’s danger area gave rise to the second goal for Two for Joy in the 24th minute. Munei Nemuramba did not hesitate and completed her brace with a ground cutter. Machuene Male bana was on target with a long range half volley two minutes before the half time whistle was blown. The score was 3 0 when the teams adjourned for the half time break. Realising that they had noth ing to fear, Two for Joy decided to move more midfielders for ward to add to the number of their goal poachers. They man aged to score two goals within the first 10 minutes of the last stanza. Khodani Ratshalingwa and Tondani Muhovha were on the target in the 48th and 54th minute respectively. The last three goals came via Languta Maluleke, Okeletso Mabasa and Machuene Male bana. Two for Joy are now lead ing the pack with 34 points, following the victory.

She also had a lot of praise for her trainer/manager, Mr John Nemakonde. “He has dedicated his life to boxing. He treats us like his children. One day I was badly injured in the eye during training. He took me to Tshilidzini Hospital, but the service there was very poor and I was in terrible pain. He took me to a private doctor and forked out R600. Don’t forget that he is a pensioner, but he is also taking care of us,” she concluded. Responding to the allegations of promot ers’ exploiting boxers and referees, Boxing SA spokesperson Dr Azwitamisi Shadrack Nthan geni said the deputy minister of Sports, Arts and Culture, Ms Nocawe Mafu, was very concerned about these allegations.

By Frank Mavhungu Dzwerani United Brothers will not take part in the next round of the Mpho Mathoho Electrical KO Competition. They were booted out by Maungani FC, who brutally walloped them 3-0 at the Tshisaulu Magenge Grounds on Saturday. The game started about an hour later than the scheduled 15:00 kick off time as the officials were still arguing over the registration of some of the players. When they realised that matching the opposition would be hard, Maungani decided to frustrate United Brothers by playing aerial balls from behind. Pfano Mushoma of United Broth ers was taken off the pitch temporarily to receive medical treatment after he sustained an injury to the back in the 14th minute. Maungani capitalised on the setback and scored their opening goal in the 17th minute. Their play maker, Thabiso Randitsheni, went loose from the left corner before beating the Brothers’ keeper, Khumbelo Mphadi, with a ground cutter. United Brothers did not lose their original fighting spirit af ter Maungani’s first goal. They continued to play entertaining football, but their strikers seemed to have forgotten their scoring boots at home. The wheel of fortune turned against United Brothers when Maungani increased the lead via Itani “Mushavhi” Malange towards the end of the first half. Maungani effected two changes when they introduced Nndanganeni Tshiruma and Wamashudu Mudau at the expense of Itani Malange and Wavhudi Matidze respectively. United Brothers responded by replacing Ampfarisaho Khangale with Mutshidzi Tshishonga.Theplayers of Maungani nearly spoiled the game when they started to demonstrate their rough skills. Local boxer Rollen Muleba controversially lost her match against the reigning cham pion, Razell Mohammed, on Sunday. The fight, to deter mine the South African Fe male Cruiser Weight Champ, took place at Nangoza Jebe Hall in Gqeberha. From the start of the match, Muleba forced Mohammed backwards time and again with one left jab after another. The only round Mohammed won comfortably was the seventh, where she made Muleba stag ger twice with a left hook and a right to the rib cage. As soon as the fight ended, Muleba’s trainer, John Nema konde, raised her right hand in anticipation of a victory, while Mohammed waited silently in front of her managers, looking beaten already, as they waited for the result to be announced. To the amazement of ev eryone, Mohammed won the match with four points. Boxing fans were stunned by the sim ilar margins dished out by the three judges after the match. Muleba immediately told the ring announcer that she would like a rematch. When the ring announcer asked if she was prepared to come to Gqeberha again, she replied: “Yes, I can fight her again anywhere.” At the time of our going to press, the date for the rematch had not been made known yet.

The game was a balanced affair for the first 15 minutes, but Chiefs created more scoring opportunities. Stars started to demonstrate their rough skills in the middle of the first half. The referee calmed the situa tion by reprimanding Ngelet shedzo Ndou with a card after he had brutally tackled Edward Mathegu from behind. The keeper of Stars, John Matumba, made his presence felt in the 19th minute. Chiefs were awarded a free kick just outside the box. Given Makgotho unleashed from the set piece, but the keeper, Matumba, impressed even his opponents when he executed a brilliant save. Stars took 30 minutes to score the all important goal. Their all rounder, Murendeni Makhumisane, was on target, following a neat pass from Lefty Sebola. Stars were supe rior regarding ball possession, but their strikers seemed to be shy when they approached their opponents’ danger area. Lesley Kutama of Chiefs won a loose ball from the left corner in the 68th minute. He ran a few steps towards the goals before beating the keeper. He caused an upset, however, when his shot hit the wood work and landed outside the field of play for a goal kick.

Although they had an away match, Maindis Ladies still managed to beat Coal City Wizards 3-2 in the Holly woodbets Super League match that was played at the Puma Rugby Stadium in Emalahleni on Sunday. Maindis had revived their league title hopes with the victory. They are now lying in the seventh position on the log standings with 33 points, nine behind the pace setters, Mamelodi Sundowns. During an interview with the team’s head coach, Mr Sipho Mabuza, shortly after the game, he said that the victory was a good tonic to revive the players’ confidence and to restore the team’s lost pride. Maindis had dropped seven points in their last three matches before their match against Coal City Wizards on Sunday.Mabuza said that he was confident that the team was still on track to achieve the set target. According to him, his mandate is to ensure that the team is among the top four on the log standings at the end of the season. He stressed the fact that the target was achievable when taking into account the fact that they still had 12 matches to play before the end of the season. Maindis were the first to score last Sunday. Their over lapping midfielder, Sophie Magoro, was on target with a header in the 19th minute. The home side fought back via Lorraine Dlamini in the 40th minute to bring the half time score to 1 1. Maindis reclaimed the lead in the 64th minute when Vutibi Sithole gave the ball the final touch after a scramble within the box. Shamiso Motasa scored the third before the home side pulled one back through Bongani Mahlangu later in the game.
Their midfielders continued to distribute some telling passes from the middle of the park in their search for the equaliser.

By Frank Mavhungu Tshisaulu FC are still alive in the Mpho Mathoho Electrical KO Competition. They nar rowly beat Tshifulanani Celtic 1-0 at the Tshisaulu Magenge Grounds on Saturday to secure a place in the stream final. Tshisaulu will play against Maungani FC in the Stream D final on a date and at a venue still to be announced. Their game against Celtic was evenly contested. Realising that they did not have enough strength in the midfield, Tshisaulu did not allow the ball to land at the centre circle. Instead, they ballooned from behind and managed to keep Celtic’s defence running for cover for the better part of the game.Celtic committed suicide by keeping the captain of Tshisaulu, Fhatuwani Baloyi, unmarked most of the time. Baloyi was everywhere, collect ing the ball from the middle of the park while at the same time playing as a full striker. Baloyi made his presence felt in the 24th minute. He forced his way through the Celtic defence and beat the keeper with a half volley from inside the box. Pfariso Mulaudzi of Celtic was the first player to go into the referee’s book. He was reprimanded with a card in the 37th minute, following a continued argument with the referee.Thevisitors from Tshifula nani were all over Tshisaulu towards the end of the first half, but they found breaking the rock solid wall of Tshisaulu difficult. Tshisaulu replaced Maanda Nemukula with Thivhulawi Silima in a bid to solidify their midfield. Silima formed a good combination with Maseo Munyai. Tshisaulu could have in creased the margin in the 74th minute. They were awarded a penalty after Fhatuwani Baloyi was brought down within the box. Thivhulawi Silima caused an upset by shooting wide from the white spot.

Young Tigers are still in with a chance after beating Mandala Young Vultures 1-0 in their Mpho Mathoho Electrical KO Competition match that was played at the Tshikombani Stadium on Sunday. Young Vultures had them selves to blame for the defeat. They managed to control the game throughout the first half but failed to convert even one of the numerous chances they hadYoungcreated.Vultures threat ened to score for the first time in the eighth minute. Their Rastafarian left winger, Ndivho Gogome, missed a fortune after he received a neat pass from his brother, Anza Gogome, at the edge of the box. Instead of relaxing on the ball and picking his spot, Gogome did the unexpect ed when he chose to shoot aimlessly.Thescoreboard was still blank at half time, despite the fact that Young Vultures were unstoppable. The technical staff of Vultures then tried to solidify their striking force by introducing Ronewa Ndou, who replaced Orilwela Mavhunga, six minutes into the last half. The goal that secured Young Tigers a place in the next round of the competition came in the 67th minute. Caprey Mukwevho caught the Vultures’ keeper napping with a long range volley. The ball hit the crossbar and bounced across the goal line. Young Vultures lost all hope of winning when they were reduced to 10 men in the 70th minute. Their playmaker, Rotshidzwa Nndwamato, was given his marching orders for dangerous play. Young Tigers continued to manage the game by playing long balls from behind until the last whistle. The players and officials of Young Vultures invaded the pitch shortly after the final whistle. They confronted the referee, Mr Given Ndou, and accused him of favouritism. Ndou was rescued from the angry mob by the league offi cials who were deployed at the stadium to witness the four games that were played at the venue on that day. Ndivho Gogome of Young Vultures is focused on the ball.
