By Kaizer Nengovhela and Anton van Zyl When the 24­year­old Shudufhadzo Musida was crowned as the most beau­ tiful girl in South Africa on Saturday, the Vhembe region could not be prouder. The girl from Vhangani village next to Ha­Masia leaped into the hearts of millions of people, not only because of her stunning beauty, but also because of the warmth of her personality.

“It took an entire village to get me here, and I would like to thank all of you for being my village. I stand here today as your Miss South Africa with immense pride and joy to be representing such a beautiful nation – one of the first Venda women, but certainly not the last - to become Miss South Af-

rica,” she said in her acceptance speech.

Shudufhadzo’s mother, Thandi, is a real-estate agent and she has a 13-year-old sister, Zwonka. Her mother was lucky enough to be able to be present in Cape Town when Shudufhadzo was crowned.

While the new queen was making her speech, the jubilation had already started at her home village.

A group of people, mostly women from the area and young people, gathered at the Musida home. When the news broke, the singing and dancing started.

One of the people who closely followed the ceremony was Shudufhadzo’s grandfather, Mr Nnditsheni Musida. When she was announced the winner, he found it difficult to hold back his tears. “As a family we are

The statement concludes to say that all SANRAL projects require the establishment of a project liaison committee (PLC) prior to contract work for the R524 is issued. The key role of the PLC is to ensure that transparency on how labour and subcontracting opportunities are awarded exists and, most importantly, that the local community of Thulamela Local Municipality is integrated as constructively as possible. The statement, however, makes no mention as to when these proposed upgrades to the R524 are envisaged to start.

A 45-year-old suspect was arrested on Tuesday after he had allegedly stabbed his girlfriend to death.

The victim was identified as Ms Eunice Mukwevho (40) of Ha Mashau Magweni. The suspect allegedly visited Ms Mukwevho and accused her of having an affair. An argument started, whereafter the man stabbed the woman. She was later taken to Elim hospital but died of the wounds sustained.

According to the police’s spokesperson, Brig Motlafela Mojapelo, the suspect was arrested on the scene and charged with assault and causing grievous bodily harm.

The charge was later changed to murder after the woman had died.

Mojapelo called on people with marital and relationship problems to consult with social workers and go for counselling, rather than resorting to killing each other.

Ms Cecilia Mukwevho, sister of the victim, said that the incident had caught them off guard. “It came as a shock to us and we are very sad,” she said. “Imagine seeing blood oozing and deep head wounds on a person you love. It was a very scary situation,” she said.

Mukwevho said that the family and community were traumatised. She said the death of Eunice had left them with deep wounds that would take some time to heal. “We lost a family member, and she cannot be replaced.”

The chairperson of the Munna Ndi Nnyi organisation, Mr Bardwell Mufunwaini, visited the family and expressed his disappointment about the fact that some people still used violence to solve their problems. “I have not seen something like this. This is bad and heart-breaking,” he said.

Mufunwaini added that several different structures and organisations were available to assist couples with problems.

As part of its ongoing efforts to drive and improve South Africa’s road infrastructure, the South African National Roads Agency (SANRAL) hosted its flagship stakehold­ er engagement session, Taking SANRAL to the People, in Thohoyandou last Friday. The session was aimed at sharing information on upcoming projects within the Thulamela municipal area, the main one being upgrades to the R524.

“The purpose of Taking SANRAL to the People is for us to engage in conversations with the community of Thulamela Local Municipality and, most importantly, to highlight the projects that they can participate in, particularly roads such as the R524 that pass through the municipality,” said Moloko Masenya, stakeholder co-ordinator responsible for the Northern Region, in a media statement after the stakeholder session.

“We want inclusive participation which will allow for equal

opportunities for local SMMEs in the region of Thulamela Local Municipality,” added transformation officer Tshegare Moletsane. He further went on to note that SANRAL’s transformation policy has a mandate to ensure that black-owned contractors and suppliers are recognized in projects that are managed by the road agency.

The upgrading of the R524 was prioritised, which will also include routine road maintenance (RRM) activities. “Upgrading of the National Road R524 will stretch from Section 1, starting at Louis Trichardt, right through to the R81,” reads the statement.

“The main activities to be carried out will include major drainage structures and bridges; traffic accommodation; lighting; construction of community access roads; construction of pedestrian facilities such as sidewalks and bus shelters,” said the project manager for Northern Region, Origin Sengwane.

By Tshifhiwa Mukwevho Aspiring gospel singers are invited to attend auditions that will be held in Louis Trichardt on Saturday (31 October).

The venue is 97 President Street (next to Game and opposite MIDAS) and the auditions take place between 09:00 and 17:00. The audition is for pre-qualifying in the I Can Sing Gospel music competition, which is the brainchild of Newie Nthabalala and Newie Music Ministry.

“This is a gospel music competition searching for those talented singers,” said Newie. “The main aim is to assist those who have talent but do not have the knowhow. I Can Sing Gospel will give a helping hand, then sustain and monitor their music journey for the coming three years.”

According to Newie, the competition offers great prizes for ten winners. The overall winner out of the 10 finalists will also win an extra R5 000 in cash. “The top winner will be the face of I Can Sing Gospel Limpopo Season, and this will be our Limpopo gospel star,” she said.

The public will vote for their favourite singer from the top 20 singers. Newie

said that I Can Sing Gospel is the first of the many competitions still to come and that many aspiring singers would benefit from the initiative as it aimed to help those with a singing talent who are not sure what next step to take.

Tshiombo village’s traditional leader, Musanda Vho-Ratshilumela Ronald Tovhowani Mathoho, said he fully supported and approved the naming of the street after JK Mathoho. “He is a very good

man who respects traditional leadership because he is also from a royal family. He came to me to ask for permission and my blessing before he erected the signboard. After erecting it, he came back and reported that everything went well. We are very proud of him because he keeps on putting our village on a global map for the right reasons. In fact, we regard him as a legend whose positive contributions to the development of this community will never be forgotten.”

“If I don’t honour myself now while I live, who else will honour me? People will wait for you to die and honour you with something you would never see with your eyes. I am happy that my move is supported and well received by the local traditional lead­ ership.”

These are the words of Vhavenda Vho-Jutas Kanakana Mathoho (82) of Tshiombo village. The old man, who is famously known for his hand piano (mbila) playing skills, has named a street that leads to his house after himself. He went the extra mile by using his old-age grant to pay for the printing and installation of a sign board at the local main road.

He said the idea came when he realised that many people, including journalists and tourists, got lost when they visited him. “I get visitors from around the country, and it was important for them to get a clear direction to my house. Besides that, I want to write my own history while I am still alive.

Those who understand history will agree with me that you cannot talk about the village of Tshiombo without my name. I was the first person from this village to record mbila music in 1977. It was tough back then, but I managed to have my music played on Radio Venda.

Apart from being an experienced farmer, I have also raised the flag of this village by getting various traditional music awards,” said Mathoho.

Affectionately called JK Mathoho, he says he deserves high honour because he was also very active in building his community through sports.

By Kaizer Nengovhela Much-loved and respect­ ed Vhembe photographer Mutendi Collins Murulane was buried at the Madodonga graveyard on Sunday. He died in a car accident at Botlokwa a fortnight ago.

Murulane played a vital role in the development of young photographers in local communities. Apart from his involvement in photography, Murulane also participated in different community structures and he strived for the development of his community.

Mr James Mafela, who represented the family, said the cruelty of death had robbed the family of one of their most reliable members.

“He was always there whenever he was needed. The family will no longer be the same without him. He might have gone, but his good work will remain,” he said.

Vhamusanda Vho-Shumani Sinthumule described the death of Murulane as a big blow to development.

“He dedicated his life to serving the community without expecting anything

in return. He would respond to any call at short notice, and we will miss him,” said Sinthumule.

During the funeral, Mr Kaizer Marindi described Murulane as a great man whose sweat and hard work had brought many changes to the community he

served. He said Murulane was a mentor to up-and-coming photographers, an icon of hope, a role model, and a true leader who displayed distinguished leadership skills in his society.

He described the death of Murulane as a terrible blow to the community.

Loshamunk Tailor understands the mechanics of singing Entertainment When he took time off from his schoolwork, he used to visit his friends in a recording studio just to see them play music. Tired of sitting in the studio, one day he tried to sing, not knowing that he was striking the right note.

His singing ability impressed his friends, who encouraged him to record a song on the spot. The song was so good that it gave him the courage to add more songs, leading to the full recording of six songs.

This is the story of the rising young Tshivenda hip-hop musi-

cian, Murembiwa Mmbooi (20) of Ha-Mangilasi village. Better known by his stage name of Loshamunk Tailor, the young singer said he started his music career in 2018.

“I had to take a break for the rest of 2019 because I was doing my Grade 12 at Dimani Agricultural High School. I regard education as the foundation of a better future, and I didn’t want my music career to interfere with my schoolwork.

After a good pass of my Grade 12, I resumed my music career.”

A diesel mechanics student, Murembiwa said he had a great love of music, but his education came first. “I have learnt that sometimes

music can be a short-term career because you cannot guarantee the future. Look at what is happening to a lot of musicians now during the coronavirus pandemic. It is always good to have something to depend on, so that you can survive when tough times come. Although I have great musical dreams, my diesel mechanics studies are my priority.”

His extended play (EP) six-track album, Higher than the moon, was released last month by Mega Entertainment Music. He said that, even though he was new to the music industry, he was happy that Tshivenda hip-hop music lovers were receiving his album with excitement. “Despite

being released during the period of the lockdown, the album is doing well. It has already started to make an impact in the public areas like taxi ranks and shopping malls where a lot of people are playing it.

My focus now is to have it played on radio, so that I can reach a wider audience.”

Art & Entertainment Sweet-voiced lady releases debut album Entertainment The name Gundo Nemukula might sound new to the enter­ tainment industry, particularly on the contemporary gospel scene, but like dynamite that comes in small packages, the new kid on the block will definitely make her presence felt when she officially launches her debut album, entitled Lockdown but not knocked down, next weekend (7 November). The long­await­ ed launch will take place at the Fountain of Living Waters Christian Centre, at Thengwe Matshetshete village.

Though this is her first album, Gundo is not a novice in the music industry. In church circles, congregants call her the sweet-voiced lady, because of her exceptional singing talent. For the past years, she has been active in the church’s worship team and worked with various local gospel stars to sharpen her artistic skills.

Victims of all forms of gender-based violence were urged to report the matter as soon as it happens, so that the police can act quickly.

“We as government have found that most of the victims of gender-based violence kept silent or reported the matter very late. People should not take so long to report abuse,” said Mathabatha. He added that they were worried that some gender-based violence cases were not reported, “because perpetrators are breadwinners in the family”. The victims are afraid to report because, if the perpetrator were arrested and charged, the family members would be left without anyone to support them financially.

Mathabatha emphasised that everyone must work tirelessly to make sure that women and children near them were safe. “We cannot continue to live lives that are constantly under siege, where we are not all enjoying the fruits of our constitutional democracy,” he said.

“Gender-based violence is one of the most devastating social challenges facing our young democracy. All stakeholders in our society must come together and find ways and means to end this,” he said.

He also urged the public to keep their homes safe and never leave little children unattended.

It’s a life of luxury for Madadzhe’s dogs Animal Welfare The past couple of weeks, several media reports have highlighted the cruel behaviour of people towards animals in the Vhembe District.

However, another side also exists, where residents treat their pets as if they are demi-gods. One such person who would not trade his three loving dogs for anything is local comedian Livhuwani Madadzhe.

Madadzhe’s dogs do not feed on low-quality pellets or left-over scraps. He explains that they share a well-prepared, roasted chicken twice a week, on top of the daily dog food that he buys and feeds them. They stay in their own room and they get a special bath once a week

Disabled young woman needs urgent help

By Kaizer Nengovhela Life has always been tough for a disabled young woman, Ms Tsumbo Mutuwafethu (24), and her family from Tshavhalovhedzi. The family of four have been the tragic victims of poverty and need a decent house to stay in, as well as a wheelchair for Tsumbo and some food.

The sickly and disabled woman and her family do not have proper shelter and they sleep on a cold floor during the winter. Mutuwafethu stays in a dilapidated house that was damaged and can collapse any time. She survives with the assistance of her disability grant. “I am living in this dilapidated two-room house with my family, because I have nowhere to go,” she said.

She said the little money she received from the grant was used to buy food, but this was not enough. When the rain comes down, water pours through the roof of the house. “What we need is a house to stay and other kinds of donations as we have been suffering for a long time in silence.

We are trying hard to make ends meet, but our efforts seem fruitless and unrewarding,” she said.

Local councillor Maggie Mathalise said that she was aware of the hardships of Mutuwafethu and her family and her civic had been working tirelessly to fight poverty in the village. “We are in the process of identifying all villagers who have the same problems as Mutuwafethu and her family. After completing the list, we will send it to the relevant authorities,” she said. She assured Mutuwafethu and her family that they would be among the people identified as needing urgent assistance.

The Ntshembo Cancer Foundation donated school uniforms and food parcels to learners from around the Bungeni area two weeks ago. The donations were aimed at learners whose parents passed away from cancer. This is the second time the foundation has come to help such learners in the area. The foundation was formed in 2019 by Nyeleti Beauty Sylvester, a survivor of breast cancer, Khathutshelo Portia Mashau, Sylvester Rikhotso and Hlayani Stanely Makhubele. Archbishop Tshifularo leaves behind a legacy of unity

By Tshifhiwa Mukwevho The late Archbishop Tshisaphun­ go Samson Gogome Tshifularo (80), who was laid to rest on Sat­ urday, will be remembered for his good deeds as an elder. He was described as a man of the cloth and a community builder whose works speak volumes.

He was born on 16 October 1940

at Tshiheni, the third-born son to Juffrou Vho-Alilali Lydia Gogome Tshifularo and Vho-David Gogome Tshifularo. He started working as a gardener in Bedfordview in 1956 before moving on to Anglo American, where he did duty as a tea-maker. In 1971, he left his job to initiate a clothing-sales business where he sold items at Dube Station.

“He was a hard worker who cared for his wives and children,” said Ms Takalani Tshifularo, daughter of the old man.

He was baptised in 1948 in the United African Apostolic Church, and for the remainder of his life, the church formed part of his everyday being. He preached the Word and prayed for the people. He had many people repenting and he baptised them.

African culture has a saying that when one has good fortune smile at him, he surely must not forget to pull others along too. Tshifularo believed in ploughing back and he did so by assisting other people to get jobs at big companies. “In 2014, Tshisaphungo Tshifularo started the New African Apostolic Church,

where he was also appointed into the position of archbishop,” she said.

However, he had developed the habit of praying in the mountain in 1956 when he was at Krugersdorp, and when he came back home, he continued to pray in a cave in the Tshiheni mountain.

His wives were Vho-Samaria, Vho-Grace, Vho-Glory, and Vho-Maria. In total, he had 26 children, 60 grandchildren, and many great-grandchildren.

“We are happy that God had allowed the life of Archbishop Tshisaphungo Samson Gogome Tshifularo to touch our lives in ways too huge to describe,” Ms Tshifularo said. “He has left us a legacy of hard work, peace, and unity.”

This is a process which started in 2017.

November. TTM and Swallows started the new season on a positive note. Swallows drew 1-1 with Stellenbosch FC, while Vhadau Vha Damani shared the spoils with TS Galaxy, with whom they played to a 1-1 draw.

Swallows and TTM were campaigning in the GladAfrica Championship League last season.

Swallows got promoted to the elite league after winning the league championship, while TTM bought their top-flight franchise from Bidvest Wits FC. A quick glance at the Swallows’ nest shows that the “Dube Birds” really mean business. They beefed up their squad by signing a number of vastly experienced players, including Vuyo Mere, Lebohang Mokoena and former Black Leopards playmaker Thabo Matlaba.

TTM’s Venezuelan international, Gustavo Paez, is likely to be in the team’s starting 11.

Should he be given a chance, Paez is expected to form a good combination with Thembisani Nevhulamba and Lerato Lamola at the forefront.

Swallows must keep an eagle eye on TTM’s midfielders, Miguel Timm, Mogakolodi Ngele, and Meshack Maphangule, or else they will not know what had eaten them at the end of the game.

Kaizer Chiefs will travel to the Mbombela Stadium in Nelspruit, where they will play against TS Galaxy. Supersport United will host Stellenbosch FC at the Lucas Moripe Stadium outside Pretoria. Black Leopards will fly to Durban, where they will lock horns with Amazulu at the King Zwelithini Stadium.

Mafanya Soccer Tournament now caters for 32 of the best teams

By Frank Mavhungu The number of participating teams in the Mafanya Soccer Tournament has increased from 16 to 32. This after the organizers succumbed to the pressure from teams who showed a keen interest in tak­ ing part in the tournament.

According to one of the organisers, Mr Dakalo Ratshitanga, their original plan was to have 16 teams in the tournament. He revealed that the whole plan was amended during a meeting last Thursday.

He stated that many uninvited guests had attended the meeting, apart from the representatives from the 16 teams whose affiliation was already confirmed.

Mr Ratshitanga further said that the uninvited guests had pleaded with the organisers

to accommodate their teams in the tournament, and, after listening to their representations, the organising committee finally succumbed to their request.

Eight matches were played at the Tshanzhe Grounds over the past weekend. Teams that had secured places in the last-16 stage of the tournament are: Tshikundamalema Waterfall, Musasenda Big Five, Tswera Hot Chillies, Khubvi Dangerous Darkies, Anel Real Vikings, Mulodi Freedom Birds, Thengwe Flying Peace and Tshikundamalema Lurangwe FC. Four matches will be played tomorrow, while the same number of matches are scheduled for Sunday.

Tomorrow’s fixtures are: Dipeni FC vs Mukondeni Shoeshine FC, Tshipako Hotspurs vs Mudagasini FC, Mavunde Hungry Vultures vs Lukau FC and

Mr Ratshitanga reiterated that the champions will become R10 000 richer. The runners-up will take home a cash prize of R5 000, while the team that will finish in the third place will be presented with cash prize of R3 500. An amount of R2 500 is awaiting the team that will obtain the fourth position in the tournament. A local businessman, Mr Sydney Mafanya, after whom the tournament is named, will sponsor it.

As for Onyango, Mr Madzuhe said that he had moved to Mamelodi Sundowns with their blessing. Mr Madzuhe reiterated the fact that TTM had an opendoor policy, saying they did not stand in the players’ way if the boys wanted to go for greener pastures elsewhere.

An 18-year-old artist from Dopeni village in Nzhelele, Thendo Makatu, stepped into the limelight the moment he produced a portrait of a beautiful girl by the name of Shudufhadzo Musida.

Now that Shudu has been crowned “queen of the land”, he is constantly excited and celebrating.

“I drew the portrait to show my admiration for the beauty queen, who happened to be the only finalist representing Limpopo in the competition then,” he said. “When I shared the image around via social media, I had more and more people contacting me to do their portraits.”

Speaking to Limpopo Mirror shortly after the ceremony, Chavani revealed that he still found it hard to believe that he is the best referee in the Premier Soccer League. When asked what he thought could have convinced the judges to name him as the winner of the prestigious award, Chavani said that the manner in which he had officiated in the game between Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates in their Telkom Cup fixture might have been one of the contributing factors.

Another possibility is that the way in which he officiated at the Nedbank Cup final between Mamelodi Sundowns and Bloemfontein Celtic last month could have convinced the judges to nominate him as the PSL’s best whistle man. Chavani was competing with Luxolo Badi and Victor Gomes for the award.
