Tributes pour in following death of Agapé’s pastor Sam

“Musina’s inconsistent supply of water are endangering our lives”

By Bernard Chiguvare Residents of Bergview in the Musina area have been suffering from an inconsistent water supply for the past three weeks and are complaining that this is affecting their day-to-day life.

“During the day, we cannot bath, do laundry or clean our dishes. We only have water at certain times at night, but does the municipality expect us to have our meals at 01:00 or 02:00 in the morning? Is this really practical? At these early morning hours, I should be asleep,” said a discontented resident, who has lived in Musina for more than five decades.

According to residents, this problem stems from a damaged water pipeline that delivers water to the Bergview area. The damage occurred on 24 June, and has still not

been fixed.

Another resident, Ms Sandra Pretorius, said that she had to drive to town every day to fetch water from relatives in order for her to flush her toilet, prepare meals and clean her house during the day.

“I have to take six 25-litre containers, loaded onto my bakkie, every day to fetch water from my sister-inlaw. We’re in the middle of Covid-19. We need to wash our hands regularly, but there’s no water. There is no way we can practise the hygiene expected of us during this pandemic,” said Pretorius.

Meanwhile, the Democratic Alliance (DA) in Limpopo has written a letter to the municipal manager of the Vhembe District Municipality to urgently address the three-week shortage and delay in the resumption of normal water

supply in the Bergview area.

According to the DA, the damage to the pipeline resulted in reduced water pressure, which has led to residents’ in higher-lying areas receiving water only in dribs and drabs, or not at all. The municipality apparently indicated that its technicians would be on site by 1 July to rectify the issue, but the problem had clearly not been resolved.

On 23 July, Vhembe District Municipality’s spokesperson, Mr Matodzi Ralushai, sent a notice via a WhatsApp group, informing the community that the VDM had closed off the water supply in Matswale, Bergview, Tiger Brand and parts of Nancefield in order for them to do maintenance on the main supply bulk line. No indication was given as to when residents might expect to have water again.

Body of man found floating in river

Limpopo police spokesperson Brig Motlafela Mojapelo said that the body had been discovered by farmers at around 13:00. “They subsequently retrieved it before making a report to the police,” he said. He said that the body had been taken to the Tshilidzini government mortuary for a post-mortem. The police are currently trying to locate the relatives of the deceased, who is still

“We request community members to come forward with evidence which will lead to the arrest of the culprits, because criminal activities of this nature are unacceptable to our communities,” Mojapelo said. He appealed to members of the community whose relatives are missing to go to the Vuwani SAPS to try and identify the body.

Mr Samuel Tshiporo, one of the men who found the body, said they were visiting the orchard and decided to go to the river to collect water. At the river they encountered a gruesome sight. “We were just taking our positions when I noticed this strange object that looked like a piece of plastic inside the river. Upon closer examination, we found that there were flies, indicating that the object must be in a state of decomposition,” he said.

“We got the shock of our lives. This was a real person and must have been in the water for some time,” he said. “In my many years of going to the river to collect water, I have never come across something like this. It is very shocking and would take a long time for me to forget,” he said.

The area is surrounded by dense bushes. It surprised everyone that a man could end up there on his own. This has raised suspicions that the man might have been killed somewhere else and dumped in the river to conceal the evidence.

Vhamusanda Vho-Avhapfani Tshikhovhokhovho of Khumbe said he was greatly disturbed about the incident. “I don´t know really what is happening in my village. This is not the first incident of this nature to happen in this village.

Why our village? What have we done to deserve this? This is very heart-breaking,” he said. He urged community members to be united and work together to fight crime and help the police in solving the matter.

Tributes from all over the world streamed in the past week, following the death of the well-known Pastor Sam van Niekerk of Louis Trichardt.

“It was early Monday morning, 26 July 2021, that we as fellow colleagues, staff, and members of Agapé Christian Centre learned of the passing of our dearly beloved Pastor Sam van Niekerk. He had a battle against the Covid-19 virus and fought bravely right to the end,” said fellow pastor Wynie van Tonder.

Sam was hospitalised in the Zoutpansberg Private Hospital from 29 June until 5 July, after which he was transported to the ICU unit in Krugersdorp Netcare Hospital, where he passed away.

Pastor Sam (also known as Sampie) was born in Middelburg on 3 October 1954. At the age of three years, his parents moved to Rhodesia (Zimbabwe) to farm in the Hartley district. “Sam grew up and worked in Zimbabwe until we immigrated to South Africa in 1980,” says his wife Dalene (née Martin).

Sam first attended school in Zimbabwe but at the age of 10 his parents enrolled him at Triegies (Louis Trichardt Primary). He then attended Louis Trichardt High School. Sam and his two older brothers were able to go home to Zimbabwe by bus most holidays, and Sam often shared fond memories of school and hostel life with his family.

“Sam returned to Zimbabwe after completing school and became sub-accountant in the Standard Bank. Sam and I met at a Church Camp at Fort Victoria, fell in love and married in 1978. We lived in Salisbury and had glorious fun and adventure years together, despite the then ‘Bush War’. When we immigrated to South Africa, we lived in Lothiar (Ermelo), where Sam worked for HL&H as a financial manager,” remembers Dalene.

They made a life-changing decision by moving to Bloemfontein in 1983. Here they enrolled in the Agapé Christian Bible School to prepare for fulltime ministry – a passion they shared.

Their first church, Patmos, was in Port Shepstone. “In 1990, we moved to Louis Trichardt, to pastor Agapé Christian Centre. Here in Louis Trichardt, our children had the privilege to grow up in the same beautiful environment that Sam had treasured in his heart,” says Dalene.

his unique passion to see people develop their talents and his gift of teaching the Word of God soon opened many doors for him to connect to many rural pastors and churches. “We gave opportunity for many of our church family and K.I.T. (Kingdom Impact Team) pastors to travel with us to minister in Africa and overseas.

These pastors and their churches are family to us,” continues Dalene.

Pastor Petrus Mamuhohi confirms that this revival impacted churches of both black and white people. Pastor Sam trained pastors in their walk with God and exposed them to strategic Kingdom leaders such as Dr Jonathan David and Dr William Vun from Malaysia.

The impact of his legacy began to touch many other nations in Africa and Asia. “His life taught us the principles of Righteousness, Agape love, Giving, Selflessness, Patience and of Commitment,” says Mamuhohi.

Dalene continues: “My heart is broken with the loss of my beloved husband, my most trusted and dependable friend who protected me with his life and the man of God I so highly regarded for his wisdom and integrity. Our children grieve the loss of their loving, caring and godly ‘dad’ whom they adored. He was so dearly loved by his grandchildren. Sam was a pillar of strength to our families and church family.”

Son Martin van Niekerk says: “My father loved his family, his friends and his community. He was a man of profound faith who always strived to serve in humility. He was a pillar of strength to so many around him. He was adored by his grandkids, who referred to him as ‘Oupa Lovey’. We miss him dearly but also take comfort knowing that where the tallest trees fall, new life always springs forth.”

His daughter, Michelle, confirms that her dad had lived his life honouring God in everything he did. “He loved my mom with all his heart, every day of his life. He was nothing but the perfect father to us children and a well-loved friend to so many people. He would have wanted me to add this very important fact: he was an astounding fisherman!

But God promises us that we will be unshakeable. So, we will continue as a family to honour him, to build our Heavenly Father’s Kingdom and to love people just like my dad did. We promise to fill the empty space with our greatest memories.

Son Marcel (living in America), says: “Uncle Sam, my dad, is a Jesus follower because his journey still continues and could not be pulled to the grave by a hospital bed.

loving unconditionally beyond skin colour, beliefs, and religion, just like he modelled for us. When we fellowship, braai, fish, golf, garden, we do so filled with joy and a love of life, just like he embraced life. He left a trail of testimonies, and treasures of hope. Life is fulfilled in the way we serve others, and purpose is discovered in the depths of laying our life down for our neighbour. Oom Sampie was never a perfect man, and if ever he obtained such status, it would be an insult, because he made every effort to be a man that allows God to work through his imperfections.

Deon Svoboda was Sam’s best friend – for about 30 years – when they met at Agapé. “I am missing him dearly. We had so much fun on the golf course and going fishing. He never judged anybody. As best friends we shared our deepest thoughts, we were always there for each other. Our hearts are broken, and this world will never be the same without him.

I love you, my friend, and will miss you,” a sad Deon says.

Fellow pastor Wynie van Tonder describes Pastor Sam as no “ordinary” pastor. “Apart from the ministry and friendship relationships that he established all over, he was a real down-to-earth person, a true and loyal friend, a man who believed in living a righteous and honest life before God, and one who always made others to feel accepted in his presence,” Van Tonder says on behalf of the Agapé family.

Pastor Van Tonder shares that he was instrumental in paving the way for others around him to excel even further than what he himself would be able to go. “Under the senior pastors couple’s loving and caring leadership, Agapé Christian Centre grew strong in number and influence, locally and internationally. We greet you, Pastor Sam, and will see you again one day when we gather around the throne of God and worship Him together,” Van Tonder says.

Dalene says “Our Sam ‘fought the good, noble fight, he finished the race’ and we will continue his legacy! Sam’s deepest conviction was - “For to me, to live is Christ, He is my source of joy, my reason to live, and to die is gain for I will be with Him in eternity.” (Philippians 1:21).

The family has high appreciation and is grateful to Dr Anton Stroebel, both hospitals’ staff, Pastor Crumpton from Foundation Ministers International (who visited and prayed for Sam), Dr Khan and his assistant, Michelle Mulder. The family extend their thanks to the community in sharing their loss and for everybody’s support in their time of need and grief.

When the hearing started on Tuesday in Louis Trichardt, it first had to entertain a request

The SAHRC’s Limpopo Provincial Office Manager, Mr Victor Mavhidula, said that they would like the matter to be finalised quickly. “We believe we have a strong case,” he said.

Mavhidula said that they were ready to address the merits of the case during the hearing.

Matumba’s legal representative, Advocate Patric Matodzi, said that they had no objection to the MMA’s being allowed as amicus curiae. He requested a postponement, so that his client can file an answering affidavit to an affidavit filed by the SAHRC. The case was postponed for a hearing on 16, 19 and 25 August.

great loss, not only to the family but the whole clan. “Mulaudzi was a hard worker who was the chairperson at the Masia Royal Council because of his vast knowledge of the history of our area. We are saddened as leaders that we have lost a valuable member, and we do not even know how we will replace him,” he said.

Masia said that Mulaudzi had been one of the trusted traditional leaders and his death was a great loss to the Vhalaudzi clan. “He was a reliable individual who took part in everything that we jointly do as traditional leaders. As an elder, we used to take advice from him, and we have been deeply touched by his passing. Despite all this, we will continue where he left off to continue to build the Vhalaudzi clan into a strong, united front.”

The burnt body of a woman, identified through DNA tests as 41-year-old Gloria Ramulongo, was discovered in the bushes at Ravele on 28 June.

Shortly after that, two men who were collecting sand around the village at around 17:00 on the afternoon of 7 July stumbled upon another badly burnt body – this time that of a man.

The police were notified, and a murder docket was opened.

Limpopo police spokesperson Brig Mojapelo Motlafela dismissed allegations of the murder being ritual-related (for muti purposes) and said that the post-mortem and police investigations would determine the cause of death and what might really have happened, while DNA tests would reveal the man’s identity. The results had not yet been released when Limpopo Mirror went to press with this story last week.

Ms Maria Thanyani, however, claims that the deceased man was her 61-year-old brother, Lavhelesani Joseph Matamela. Thanyani said Matamela had visited her at Lwamondo and left to go back to his home at Ravele on 6 July. She said that she had

received a phone call from a community member, who had informed her that a man had been assaulted by four people on the street who had accused him of killing Gloria Ramulongo and driven with him to the bushes, where they had dumped his body. Thanyani had gone to the police and positively identified the deceased as her brother from a piece of T-shirt he had worn the day he left Lwamondo.

“We are very saddened by my brother’s death. How does anyone ever forget something like this?” she asked. “We still have a lot of questions about his death and need answers.”

Thanyani pleaded with the police to complete their forensic investigation as the family cannot find closure until his remains are released to them and they can give him a dignified funeral.

So said Limpopo MEC for Health Dr Phophi Ramathuba during the official opening of a secondary vaccination centre at the University of Venda’s sports hall on Tuesday, 27 July.

Ramathuba was joined by the vice-chancellor and principal at Univen, Dr Bernard Nthambeleni, and the Health Department in Vhembe’s senior manager, Mr Robert Sirwali.

This initiative forms part of the relationship built between the Limpopo Department of Health and institutions of higher learning. This site will be a secondary site to the current primary site at Tshilidzini Hospital to alleviate the current congestion at the Thohoyandou Health Care Centre.

The MEC will lead vaccinators from the Department of Health, nurses at the university clinic and final-year nursing students who had recently been trained as vaccinators. “The site, which will focus on vaccinating students and staff from the university, will also open to the public, especially now when our focus is mainly on those above 35. We believe the site will be even more relevant from the 1st of

September, when the vaccine roll-out will be opened for those above 18, as announced by the President, and institutions of higher learning do house the majority of that cohort,” she said.

“We appreciate the University of Venda for taking a lead in partnering with the health department by providing space for a much-needed vaccination site for the communities around Thohoyandou. They will not regret it.

Dr Nthambeleni was delighted when the department opened the long-overdue vaccination centre at the campus, and said it meant a lot to the university community. “We believe that vaccines save lives, and if all our staff and students are vaccinated, we believe we will be in a position to begin to resume our normal business of conducive learning and teaching. We are also pleased that our final-year nursing students are trained to provide vaccinations, not only here at our university, but also at the other vaccination centres here in the Vhembe region,” he said.

“Drawing cartoons has been my passion since my primary school days,” said Fhatu, who had obtained a diploma in Graphic Design from Tshwane University of Technology. He believes that cartoon making plays an important role, as he can use this art form to evoke emotions and create further debate on societal matters.

“My cartoons are mostly based on trending events, especially politics and other major happenings in the media,” he said.

Hosi Nxumalo will be remembered as visionary leader

By Silas Nduvheni News of the sudden death of Hosi Busa Charles Nxumalo sent shockwaves rippling throughout the region. The former chairperson of the Vhembe House of Traditional Leaders and current chairperson of the Planning Committee in the Limpopo Provincial House of Traditional Leaders passed away on Sunday morning, 25 July, at Letaba Hospital, after a brief illness.

The family spokesperson and chairperson of the Nxumalo royal family, Buku Nxumalo, confirmed that Nxumalo’s death was related to Covid-19 complications. He was only 49 years old.

Limpopo MEC for Co-Operative Governance, Human Settlement and Traditional Affairs (CoGHSTA) Basikopo Makamu conveyed his sincere condolences to the family of the late leader, his relatives and the Magona Traditional Authority.

“The department is deeply moved with grief by the death of yet another senior traditional leader in our province. Death has once more robbed us of a resilient traditional leader, a community builder and a father to the communities that he led,” said Makamu.

He added that Nxumalo would be remembered for his courageous leadership and priceless contributions towards resolving the Malamulele uprising. Makamu also referred to the immeasurable role

he played in the development of the traditional communities under his domain.

The chairperson of the Limpopo House of Traditional Leaders, Kgoshi Malesela Dikgale, described Nxumalo as a hard worker and good man who had great knowledge of traditional affairs. He said that Nxumalo had helped them immensely with information regarding the development of the provincial house.

“At one point he also assisted us a great deal by explaining important information written in English, as he was a former teacher. His knowledge has helped us a lot in the House. We used him to read, peruse and analyse the premier’s annual speech, especially regarding

things and items of the traditional affairs,” said Dikgale.

Nxumalo left the Vhembe House of Traditional Leaders as chairperson in 2017 and was replaced by the current chairperson, Thovhele Vele Kutama.

Buku described Nxumalo as an intellectual and visionary leader who served his communities with great passion. “He was appointed by the then Premier of Limpopo, Mr Cassel Mathale, on 30 June 2010 and installed in October 2010. He was also current chairperson of the Malamulele Branch of CONTRALESA,” Buku said.

Nxumalo’s funeral arrangements had not been finalized yet at the time of our going to press.

Vhamusanda Raphalalani takes up role as leader at Mavhode Village

“We understand that our communities are situated in deep rural villages where there are no proper roads, but we will work hard to obtain such services,” he pledged.

Raphalalani succeeded his late father, Vhamusanda Tshidula Raphalalani, who passed away in January this year.

By Silas Nduvheni While many married women believe that producing food for the table is their husband’s domain, getting up and doing it for herself has always been a part of Mpfariseni Constance Mbedzi’s daily life.

Mbedzi (49), of Mukula Village just outside Thohoyandou, worked as a domestic worker for many years before she decided to do her own thing. Her dream has always been to have her own eatery one day and, in the process, create job opportunities for other unemployed and impoverished women from rural communities too. So, in 2010 she bought a tent, erected it behind Shoprite in

the Thohoyandou CBD and named it “Ha-Mme a Mpho Eating Place”, from where she started selling cooked meals.

Very quickly her food became popular, and she managed to build up a big clientele.

“My business of cooking food has gone from strength to strength, and I never look back, as my food attract many customers. I understand my customers and, as we speak, we have over 200 customers who come to buy our freshcooked meals every day,” said Mbedzi.

Because of her booming business, she now employs six women who had previously been without jobs to help her prepare food.

Mbedzi’s advice to other women is that the days where women stay in the kitchen

and wait for the men to bring food home are gone. “I offer my help to aspiring young women who also want to start something for themselves, especially in the food industry,” she added.

One of Mbedzi’s employees at Ha-Mme a Mpho Eating Place, Nyadzawela Magabeni of Dziamuli-Tshapasha Village in the Mutale area, said that life had been hard before she started working, as she had depended on her husband, who did not have a steady job.

“I was an unemployed woman from the rural area.

But things changed for the better when I started to work as a cooker in 2019. Now I’m able to put food on the table for my children without waiting for my husband,” Magabeni said.

Sinyegwe, who has won countless awards as a choir master during her 38-year teaching career at the local Vhutalu Primary School, has now find joy as a professional recording artist.

“I started teaching in 1977 and retired in 2015.

For all those years, I was a choir master, and I was also involved in teaching learners traditional dances like malende and tshigombela. It then taught me that I can use my experience as a teacher to do something profitable when I am outside the teaching profession. That is where the idea of pursuing a new career in music kicked in. Age is just a number, and anyone can kick-start a new career despite being a senior citizen,” said Sinyegwe, who has just released her fifth Tshivenda traditional music album titled Venda la mulovha.

Besides being a full-time musician, Sinyegwe is the brain behind the formation of a traditional dance group called Tshitivhani tsha sialala in her village. “I’m also involved in youth development through a youth choir that I have formed some years back. I also make sure that I teach these young ones traditional dances and lessons about our culture and history as Africans,” said the singing legend, who served as one of the judges for Phalaphala FM’s traditional dance competitions.

She said of her latest Tshivenda traditional music album: “The album is rooted in the culture and tradition of the Vhavenda, and it is aimed at encouraging young people to take their culture seriously. A nation that does not keep its history and origin is doomed. I want to leave a legacy that my people will never forget when I depart from this earth. Protecting our heritage is an integral part of that legacy. And this can be achieved through giving people pure traditional music. I am happy that the album has been received well by my fans and it is receiving fair airplay in various radio stations.”

After a lengthy investigation, Mirror tracked down the once-famous star and found him at his home village of Tshaulu Tshitumbe, outside Thohoyandou. “Tell my fans that I’m still alive and kicking.

I know that many people are worried about me because they don’t know where I am. You know when a celebrity just vanishes, people would be asking themselves many questions that they would not be able to answer,” said Ishy with a bright smile on his face. Asked what he had been doing for the past 15 years, Ishy was quick to respond: “I have never been out of the music industry. It is true that I have not recorded a single album for the past 15

years. However, I’m seriously involved in music through my recording studio, Tshau Records, that I have established here at home. I now play instruments, record, arrange, master and produce many artists who are big names in the local music industry. Although I can’t remember all the artists because they are many, some of them include Alpheus Ramavhea, Esther Badzhi, Wilber Mudau, Asnath Mulaudzi, Tendi Matumba, Zacharia Munzhedzi and Talifhani Munyai, to name but a few.” He said he had no intention of releasing an album anytime soon. “My recording studio keeps me busy in such a way that it is difficult to get time to compose my own songs.

Ishy started his music career in the early nineties with Tendani Nephawe, who is today famously known as Mutendas. He shot to stardom when he released his debut album, Masakhane, in 1999.

The album contained the hit song U taliwa zwi a vhavha, which resembled a national anthem on Phalaphala FM and in public spaces. Masakhane was followed by his second album, Vhutshilo, which was released in 2003. He sealed his fame with his third album, Mphemphe, in 2005.

He is also founder of Vhaphuma Trading Enterprise, which promotes poultry farming.

Siphuma formerly worked as clinical coordinator at MIET Africa, a South African not-for-profit organisation with the focus on education development. “Growing up, I read Tshililo Tsha Mme, a book of poetry written by Muluga Muelelwa. “That book inspired me so much that I started writing my own poems.”

She said she had never thought that she would manage to have her own book published so soon in her life. “I’m becoming more fulfilled as an author,” she said. “I never thought I would make it this far. My biggest dream is to see my book being read in schools and owning my own publishing company.”

Mashudu said that Tshisima Tsha Dora was only the beginning of many more good things to come.

Mathivha was a mentor for many in the industry The late Albert Tshivheaho Mathivha Seremane (61), the former head of drama at Phalaphala FM, was laid to rest at Mbaleni cemetery on Saturday, 24 July. He passed away at his home in Thohoyandou on 19 July after a short illness.

Mathivha joined SABC radio as a news reader and presenter in 1983 and retired in March this year after 38 years as broadcaster at the station. He was described as a loyal and dedicated man by everyone who knew him.

During the funeral, mourners were reminded to hold onto the good memories of him while he was alive.

Family spokesperson and cousin of the deceased Mr Muthakhi Malange said they had suffered a great loss. “It is painful to lose someone so dear, but we thank God for the privilege to have had him in our lives,” he said.

He said that Mathivha had accomplished his life’s race in a respectable manner. “He had achieved so much in his life. It was a life well lived and we will always remember his humility, love, respect, and ever-smiling face.

Although we know that we will never see him again, we are consoled by the good work he has left behind. His contributions towards the development of Vhashavhi will keep inspiring us to work hard towards a better life for all.”

Phalaphala FM’s senior producer, Mr Mulalo “Duka” Ramarumo, encouraged young presenters to follow in Mathivha’s footsteps.

“He was an accurate presenter during his years at the station who did his work without fear or favour. His contribution towards the shaping of the radio industry will always be remembered.

His spirit will continue to guide us in building and raising a proud standard for the industry,” Ramarumo said. “He had a very kind character and couldn’t even hurt a fly. I have personally lost a mentor.”

Mr Freddy Sadiki, the SABC’s regional operational manager, said that the SABC was deeply saddened by the death of the former radio guru. “He worked tirelessly for the development of the radio industry. We have really lost a giant who was always in the forefront of our struggle for better service to our listeners.

The grief the family experiences also touches us. We will always remember him, as he had done so many good things for this radio industry and the community. He will be missed dearly.”

Although she is happy to have realised her dream of releasing an album, she admits that getting airplay at various radio stations is very difficult when you’re a relatively unknown artist.

International documentary made about legendary mbila artist By our correspondent

A documentary titled Mutoli wa Mbila na Vhavenda Vho-JK Mathoho is being filmed, focussing on the life of Vhavenda Vho-JK Mathoho (83).

“If I die now, I will die a happy man because I have been recognized by my own African people, and my works will be known throughout the world,” said well-known mbila musician Mr Jutas Kanakana Mathoho (83) of Tshiombo village, outside Thohoyandou.

This comes after Ndalama Heritage Consulting, in association with Mikosi Media, FundiCiti and the National Film and Video Foundation, commissioned a documentary on the interesting life story of the prolific Tshivenda traditional music master who is commonly known as Vhavenda Vho-JK Mathoho.

The project is part of the Presidential Economic Stimulus Package (PESP) for Covid-19 relief and is ti-

tled Mutoli wa Mbila na Vhavenda Vho-JK Mathoho (The Joy of Mbila with Vhavenda Vho-JK Mathoho).

The filming started in early May, with the final product scheduled to go on stream at the end of August.

This documentary is the brainchild of three creative people, Dolphin Mabale (an anthropology lecturer at the University of Venda and the executive producer), Thivhilaeli Makatu (former South African diplomat and producer) and Mmbangiseni Ravele (photo-videographer and director of photography). As part of skills empowerment, the trio employs 10 young, committed people to assist with all aspects of the production, from camera, light and sound to managing the whole project.

This 45-minute production starts at OR Tambo International

Airport, with the arrival of the interviewer and his journey from Gauteng, until he reaches Tshiombo village where he engages Vhavenda Vho-JK Mathoho. The production team uses the spectacular Venda landscapes as a canvas to paint the beautiful life story of Mathoho and his mbila. Besides interviews at the home of Mathoho, the film is shot at Songozwi, Lake Fundudzi, Dzata Ruins, Thathe Holy Forest, Tshatshingo Potholes, Mapungubwe and Thulamela Ruins in the Pafuri area.

The producer of the documentary, Thivhilaeli Makatu, said Vhavenda Vho-JK Mathoho was one of the most gifted traditional music instrument players in the country. “His exceptional talent cannot be ignored, and we want the world to know about it.”

He said the documentary would have English subtitles, leaving room for translation into other world languages, as they planned to take this production throughout the world. When asked what the final film’s prospects were here at home and abroad, he said: “We promise to deliver a quality product and take the mbila to its former glory as the musical instrument of the gods.

When history is written, JK Mathoho’s name will be etched in our collective memory, in South Africa and worldwide, to live to eternity.”

Betty’s legacy lives on through Onderstepoort scanner

By Andries van Zyl The Onderstepoort Veterinary Academic Hospital (OVAH) of the Faculty of Veterinary Science at the University of Pretoria (UP) has acquired its first magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanner. The facility, the first of its kind in Africa, was officially opened during a virtual ceremony on Monday and owes its existence to one of the Soutpansberg’s bestknown animal lovers.

In November 2011, one of the Soutpansberg’s oldest residents and a legend in her own right, Miss Betty Muriel Noakes, passed away at the age of 98. Many will remember Betty as a loyal, supportive, encouraging, and fun friend with a great sense of humour and a love of animals. They will remember her caring, honesty and generous-heartedness, and the generous and untiring way in which she supported initiatives such as the SPCA. She was one of the founding members of the Louis Trichardt SPCA in 1986.

Since she had no family of her own, no one found the fact surprising that Betty had left the bulk of her estate, worth around R30 million, to animal charities. Her

property and estate went on auction in March 2012. This included her Stonehenge property, overlooking the Soutpansberg Golf Club in Louis Trichardt. The house on the property itself was declared a National Heritage Site. “Almost 95% of the estate had been left to organisations such as the SPCA, the Red Cross, the SA Guide Dog Society, Henleyon-Klip Animal Rescue and the Animal Anti-Cruelty League. Médicins Sans Frontieres and the Salvation Army also count among the beneficiaries. Probably the biggest part of the estate [almost R16 million] will go towards the Veterinary Faculty at the University of Pretoria. This money is specifically earmarked for the promotion of animal welfare,” said the executor of the estate, Dr Suwil Rudolph, at the time.

Almost 10 years later, the veterinary faculty at the University of Pretoria made sure Betty’s legacy lives on with the opening of the MRI scanning facility. Regarding Betty’s wish that her estate must be used to benefit animals, Dr Paul van Dam, director of the OVAH, remarked afterwards in a press release: “We trust that the MRI will indeed play a large role in improving the lives of our patients.”

By acquiring its own MRI facility,

the OVAH now no longer has to make special arrangements with human hospitals to perform MRI scans. “In South Africa, the use of MRIs for diagnostic purposes is limited to small animals, and most MRI scans are done in human facilities by special arrangement … An MRI scan takes 45 minutes or longer, which limits the number of cases that can be referred. With our own MRI scanner, we can now do scans at any time of the day, on site, without the additional time to travel to another facility. An added advantage is that our MRI scanner will be the only high-field MRI in South Africa and probably [in] Africa, with image acquisition optimised for veterinary patients,” said Van Dam in the press release.

MRI scanners have been used in human medicine since 1977 and have been used in veterinary medicine since the mid-1990s. MRI imaging is the diagnostic method of choice when low contrast exists between neighbouring tissue types.

This includes the brain – where the MRI distinguishes between grey matter, white matter, nerves, and cerebrospinal fluid – as well as the locomotor system, where it can distinguish between muscle, tendons and ligaments surrounding

joints, joint fluid and joint cartilage.

Lesions of the spinal cord are also best visualised with MRI imaging.

“By providing excellent images of soft tissue, MRI scans enable the clinician to make an accurate and often early diagnosis, allowing properly targeted treatment plans,” said Van Dam.

Before the recent university restructuring from schools to faculties at Univen, he was the Vice-Dean of the School of Agriculture. Now he is the head of department and associate professor of animal science. “I am involved in the administration of the department and teach undergraduate students,” he said. “I teach animal nutrition and animal production courses. I also supervise senior undergraduates (fourth-years), MSc and promote PhD student research projects.”

His main research interests with both the senior undergraduate and the postgraduate students lie in animal nutrition, particularly evaluating forages, browsing and agricultural by-products as potential supplementary feeds in the dry season for livestock.

“During the dry season, the natural pastures decline in both quantity and quality, and this is the main challenge of animal production in the tropics,” he said. “Animals lose weight in the dry season and productivity drops significantly.”

He said that he would encourage other professors and even students to apply for the Fulbright Program because they could learn and experience a lot when on a US Fulbright Scholarship.

“We have different teaching and research approaches to animal science,” he said. “Here at UGA, they are looking at basic scientific explanations of what is happening to the feeds in the animal gut. According to the Minister Counsellor for Public Affairs at the US Embassy, Frank Whitaker, the Fulbright South African Research Scholar Program is a fully funded opportunity for South African university-faculty or research-institute professionals to conduct research and teach in their field of expertise at an academic or research institution in the United States for a period of three to nine months with the intention of strengthening academic programmes and expanding the US/SA higher-education network. This programme forms part of the range of Fulbright scholarship opportunities available for South African students and academics.

Since 1953, more than 2 100 South African students and scholars have pursued studies and research in the United States through the Fulbright programme.

“Small-scale and subsistence farming often supports the livelihood of communities, and we believe the results of Dr Baloyi’s research may significantly contribute to the quality and health of livestock in Thohoyandou and beyond,” Frank Whitaker said. “Dr Baloyi’s experience and research will also broaden the exposure of his students at the University of Venda, which will certainly impact the depth of their academic and practical experience as future agricultural scientists.”

The Fulbright programme currently operates in South Africa and more than 150 other countries worldwide.

Eltivillas residents can finally breathe again

By Kaizer Nengovhela Although Eltivillas residents in Louis Trichardt can finally breathe in clean, fresh air again now that the dysfunctional sewer system in their area - which had made their lives unbearable for so long – has been repaired, residents do not seem overly impressed by the Vhembe District Municipality’s delayed efforts.

Their ordeal started more than a decade ago when the main sewer pipeline between Roshni and Bengal Streets in Eltivillas burst and overflowed straight into the residential area. All this time, residents have had to live with the terrible stench of raw sewage, mixed with the sound of swarming mosquitoes, and serious concerns about their health.

The situation had reached a point where lodgers at a house in the area had to vacate their rooms because of the smell, and parents did not dare let their children play outside anymore, as human faeces was floating down the streets.

Mr Rendani Mudau could not express his relief. “I use this road on a daily basis and was forced to use an alternative route because of the spillage flowing down the road. I had to re-calculate my morning schedule in order to get to work on time, and this inconvenienced me greatly. I’m really glad that this mess had been fixed

at last. My only concern is that it took the municipality this long to repair a pipe that is practically on their doorstep,” Mudau said.

Spokesperson for the Vhembe District Municipality Mr Matodzi Ralushai, said that the moment they had received the complaint, it had been reported to their technical department, who had dispatched a team to repair the pipeline. “We are a caring government and cannot allow a situation where our people suffer. We are extremely happy that their problem has been solved,” he said.

Another resident, Adv Vhutshilo Phuravhathu, said that reporting a dysfunctional sewer system to the municipality should not be a waste of the community’s time. “They must try and address reported cases immediately,” he said. “How can we be forced to live with faeces floating around our yards and along our streets for over 10 years, and still say that we have a ‘caring’, responsive municipality?” he asked.

“We didn’t even enjoy living at our houses anymore because we had to stay indoors all the time.

The scope of work entails the following: • Widening of road to accommodate the SANRAL 13,4m typical cross-section. The surfaced shoulders to be reduced to 2,4m wide resulting in the total surfaced width of 12,4m.

• Construction of 45mm Continuously Graded Asphalt Medium surface.

• Reconstruction of the Base layer to C3 quality using existing base layer materials and G6 materials obtained from borrow pits.

• Construction of Base layer using G1 Crushed stone materials obtained from commercial source.

Roshini wants to help turn tears into hope with her first book

By Andries van Zyl On 25 October 2017, Roshini and Mark Pakkiree’s world came crashing down around them with the unexpected death of their only child, the 16-year-old Sanjit, because of illness.

Despite their sadness, this Louis Trichardt couple have since decided to turn their tears into hope, by establishing a charity in honour of their son and by motivating and supporting others experiencing similar trauma resulting from the loss of a loved one.

Their remarkable story will soon be available in book form.

A Life Altered: My journey from tears to hope was authored by Roshini and is in the final stages of being printed by Blue Lotus Publishers in Durban. “I’ve been doing so many presentations that I just decided to put it together and write the story,” said Roshini, a retired police officer with 27 years of service.

The road to recovery has been a long one for Roshini and Mark. Initially, they started the Sanjit Pakkiree Train of Hope Awareness Project in 2019.

They named it after their son to honour Sanjit’s loving and caring personality and his ingrained desire to help others.

The main focus of the project is to create awareness and help with matters that challenge many young people, from pre-school to high school age, as well as tangible assistance in the form of donations to those in need.

In the meantime, Roshini also started to give motivational presentations to assist others battling with the same trauma. After one of these presentation, she got a call from Dr Anneline Chetty of the Turning Point organisation [an organisation that provides women with a platform to address past trauma].

Chetty asked Roshini if she would like to share her story at one of their Turning Point presentations, to which Roshini agreed.

This ultimately led to Roshini’s deciding to write down their story. “With this book, I went deeper into me and Mark’s story. I went very personal about what transpired from that day he died. Altogether, it is a 30-page book, but I did not want to stretch it further because I wanted it to be pure facts. I wanted each word to be the truth because that is the only way you can help somebody - to be honest. They must see what it is you went through. But it is not to say that what you are going through is by any means over. It is a back-andforth roller-coaster, but you just keep going on. It is like incorporating the loss in your life, but not forgetting it,” said Roshini.

It took Roshini about four weeks to write the book, writing about a 1 000 words a day. Thereafter, it took about a week to put together.

the motivational aspect. If any money is to be made from the sale of the book, it will go back into our charity,” said Roshini. She added that they would let the public know as soon a hard copies of the book were available.

Regarding the Sanjit Pakkiree Train of Hope Awareness charity project, Roshini said that they did not ask for any donations. The project is funded through her and Mark, in conjunction with the couple’s business, Thohoyandou Beer Distributors. They have so far successfully funded five projects. Unfortunately, the Covid-19 pandemic has put a stop to their project but, said Roshini, they want to get going again soon.

Roshini and Mark are truly a “power couple” regarding motivating and caring for others. Fairly recently, they were both bestowed with honorary doctorates (not academic) by the Theophany University for the humanitarian work they are doing through the Sanjit Pakkiree Train of Hope Awareness Project.

Lacoste Morning Stars now have five new stars

By Frank Mavhungu An affiliate of the Sasol Women’s League, Lacoste Morning Stars, have reason to believe that their dream to lift the league title trophy at the end of the season will become a reality. The Shayandima-based side registered five new players on Monday.

According to the managing director of the team, Mr Emmanuel Mudau, all the new signees are from Mito Stars Ladies FC. Mito Stars are campaigning in the Gauteng Stream of the Sasol Women’s League.

Mudau said that the relationship between Morning Stars and Mito Stars dated back four years. The two teams were invited to partake in a tournament at the Dobsonville Stadium in Johannesburg in 2017. Morning Stars and Mito

Stars met in the final of the tournament and the pride of Shayandima lost in the final through a penalty shootout.

Mudau said that after the game he had had a lengthy discussion with his counterpart from Mito Stars and a friendship had been formed.

Mudau approached his counterpart from Mito some weeks ago regarding his dream to become the league champions at the end of the current season. He pleaded with his friend to give him some seasoned players in order for him to realise his dream. According to Mudau, they agreed that they should stage a friendly match during which he would select the players of his choice from Mito’s squad.

The game was played at the Shayandima school grounds last Saturday. Mudau said that his technical staff had selected

five players from Mito Stars during the game.

The five players who will be parading in the Morning Stars’ colours when the league programme resumes next weekend are: Lerato Magagula, Phindile Njambatho, Lesego Tsoabise, Gugu Ndebele and a top striker, Aphelele Mpambani. Mpambani scored a brace when her team beat Morning Stars 2-1 in their rehearsal game last Saturday.

Mudau said that the five players would be put to the test when his team fought for league points with Chippas United Ladies at the Shayandima school grounds next Saturday, 7 August.

Chippas and Morning Stars are closely contesting the league title. Chippas are currently leading the pack, while the Stars are in the second position.

SAB League provincial promotional playoffs back on track next week

By Frank Mavhungu The SAB League provincial promotional playoffs will be staged at the Thohoyandou Stadium next Saturday and Sunday (7 and 8 August). The tournament should have been played last month but had to be postponed indefinitely, following the Cabinet’s decision to move the country from lockdown alert level 3 to 4.

Following the Presidents’ announcement on Sunday evening that the Cabinet had decided to move the country back to lockdown alert level 3, the South African Football Association (SAFA) issued a circular this week informing their affiliate members to resume with the non-professional sports.

After receiving the communique from their mother body, the provincial secretary immediately advised the regional leagues to notify the teams that qualified for the provincial event to get ready for the annual tournament. As usual, five teams from the five regional associations will battle for promotion in the two-day event.

Teams that will represent their respective regions in the tournament are: Vondwe XI Bullets (Vhembe), Emmanuel FC (Mopani), Vuka Hungry Tigers (Capricorn), Greenhouse FC (Waterberg) and Mamatho United from Sekhukhune.

Black Leopards and striker Tumelo Khutlang part ways management of the team.

Asked about his next move, Khutlang revealed that he was still going to discuss the matter with his manager. Our efforts to solicit some comments from the club regarding the matter did not bear any fruits.

The club’s general manager, Mr Elijah Mulaudzi, was locked in meetings each time we called him. He promised to return our calls when he had time, but that was not to be at the time of our going to print. Khutlang is the fifth player to part ways with Black Leopards this month. The Thohoyandou side had released Ovidy Karuru, Mohamed Anas, Edwin Gyimah and Sibusiso Khumalo over the past weeks.

VFA prepare for the start of GladAfrica Championship

By Frank Mavhungu Venda Football Academy FC (VFA), who recently bought their GladAfrica Championship franchise from Cape Umoya United FC, are leaving no stone unturned in their preparations for the start of the new season, which is scheduled to start in three weeks’ time.

The opening league matches for the new season will be played over the weekend of 21 and 22 August.

According to the club’s general manager, Mr Tenda Masikhwa, they had been conducting trials to recruit new players over the past weeks. Masikhwa stated that tomorrow (Saturday) would be their last day to conduct trials. He further revealed that the team will go for a pre-season camp from next Tuesday.

According to Masikhwa, the team’s head coach, Mr Johnny Ferreira, was satisfied with the players he had selected so far. He again revealed that most of the players were put to the test in their rehearsal games against Cape Town City and Pretoria Callies last week. He said that the coach had managed to identify the departments that were still lacking during their two friendly games.

Masikhwa said that although VFA were the rookies in the GladAfrica Championship League, they were there to compete.

“Judging from the level of our preparedness for the new season, I can say it with confidence that we are going to make an impact in the league, despite the fact that

it will be our debut season in the professional division,” he said.

Asked about the number of Cape Umoya United players who had agreed to relocate with the club to Limpopo, Masikhwa said that they would soon make an announcement regarding the full squad on which they would pin their hopes when the league activities for the new season started. Although Masikhwa did not want to commit himself on that, Limpopo Mirror was reliably informed that most of the Cape Umoya United’ players who were still contracted to the club at the time of the sale agreement had refused to relocate with the club to Limpopo.

Former Lidoda duvha striker Lifa Hlongwane joins the Team of Choice Madzivhandila (TTM) on a six-month loan contract in 2018 and later returned to Cosmos. He migrated to Black Leopards at the beginning of the 2018/19 soccer season. During his stay at Lidoda duvha, Hlongwane won the Man of the Match award on several occasions.

After spending about three months without any income, the former Black Leopards player, Lifa Hlongwane, has finally secured a new employment contract. The 27-year-old striker will be parading in the Maritzburg United colours when the activities for the new DStv Premiership soccer season start on 14 August.

He was one of the players who were unveiled by the Team of Choice last week. Hlongwane parted ways with Lidoda duvha unceremoniously in April this year. This followed after he was found guilty of breach of contract. Hlongwane took part in the Easter soccer tournament, which was organized by the former Polokwane City player, Thabiso Semenya. Following his dismissal by the Thohoyandou side, Hlongwane remained jobless until his new contract with Maritzburg was signed.

Speaking to Limpopo Mirror after the team’s morning training session on Monday, Hlongwane revealed that life had been difficult for him without a salary for the past months. He said he was regretting what he had done at Black Leopards. He reiterated that he did not have any ill feelings towards his former employers, adding that he knew that what he had done was unacceptable. He concluded by wishing Black Leopards well in their future endeavours.

Born in Diepkloof on 22 September 1993, Hlongwane started his football career with the amateur side, Ama BEE FC. His first professional team was the now-defunct Royal Eagles FC, whom he joined way back in 2014. He later moved to Jomo Cosmos, where he stayed for Lifa Hlongwane. three seasons.
