Tragedy hits pre-school

Seven killed in crash

Seven people, including five young children, were killed in the umpteenth bus accident on local roads during the past few years, when a bus ferrying pre-schoolers overturned on a steep hill early last Thursday morning at Tshithuthuni Village in the Nzhelele area.

The deceasead are Ms Sarah Denga (60), Phathutshedzo Phaswana (20), Mulalo Mudau (4), Orifha Singo (3), Sedzani Nthambeleni (4), Ronaldo Phaswana (4) and Thingahangwi Madada (4).

About 80 people were injured, some of them critically. The bus was transporting the pre-schoolers to Pretoria for an educational tour when the accident took place. The owner of Khakhu Pre-school, Mr Jeffrey Mudau, said the entire community was extremely shocked by the incident. Mudau said that, after they had gathered for school assembly, they hugged each and bade the tour group farewell after a prayer session, “not knowing what the future was holding for us. We did not know that, hours later, the whole community would be weeping...”

He said the affected children’s parents had agreed to close the school until the situation had returned to normal to allow for a period of mourning.

that there was speculation that the bus’s brakes had failed. “A culpable homicide case has been opened,” he added. The MEC for Roads and Transport, Ms Pinky Kekana, and the MEC for Education, Mr Namane Masemola, have sent messages of condolence to the families of the deceased.

Kekana and Masemola will meet with bus operators and taxi associations on October 6, to discuss the safe transporting of pupils.

Mr Edward Randima, deputy-chairperson of the Khakhu-Makuleni Territorial Council, said although the families, friends and community accepted what had happened, they would not forget the horrific deaths that had robbbed them of their friends. A representative of the families, Emmanuel Denga, said that the families had accepted the loss, although it was difficult to cope without them. “It also important to acknowledge the community support since we received the bad news,” he said.

A spokesperson stated that any assistance from the side of the community to the affected families would be most welcome and greatly appreciated.

Tshilwavhusiku Magistrate's bail application.

Court on Monday, facing a Tshisimba allegedly killed his charge of murder. The case was wife, the 47-year-old Ms Annah postponed to 11 October for a Ratshilumela, by hitting her on

the head with an axe at Ravele village last month.

During his court appearance earlier this week, women from around Sinthumule area picketed outside the court, demanding that the suspect be denied bail. Pinky Mukwevho, one of the women who protested outside, said the victim had been involved in a love affair with another man. According to her, Tshisimba pleaded with the woman not to reject him. An argument allegedly broke out between the two when Ratshilumela returned from work on August 23. She was killed and her body was left lying on the ground.

Zim soldiers arrested for robbing suspected smugglers Zimbabwean police at Beit Bridge have arrested a group of six suspects, among them two local soldiers, for allegedly robbing a suspected smuggler of several boxes at gunpoint.

The value of the cigarettes is estimated at US$19 800.

The incident occurred at the complainant’s homestead in Makavhani village outside Beit Bridge.

According to the police, one of the soldiers, Godknows Ngwenya, was shot in the thigh during a shoot-out with police detectives. Ngwenya is now recuperating in the Beit Bridge District Hospital, under police guard.

Ngwenya and Lawrence Munkuli, both aged 26 and members of the Zimbabwe National Army stationed

at One Independence barracks in the border town, Fannie Bako (20), Elton Kundai (22), Aurther Nyathi (23) and Morris Changachirere (30), were not asked to plead to armed robbery charges when they appeared before a local magistrate, Mrs Auxillia Chiumburu on Monday.

The case was postponed to October 6, and they remain in custody.

The prosecutor, Mr Reason Mutimba, said on 19 September at around 19:00, the accused persons confered with Tawanda Chiwewe, who is still at large. They then teamed up and went to the victim’s homestead after they got information that he was in possession of several boxes of cigarettes, which he allegedly intended to smuggle into South Africa.

The accused persons, who were

travelling in a Mazda bakkie and a Toyota Vitz, drove to the victim’s homestead.

The court heard that, on arrival, Bako and Sibanda introduced themselves as police detectives during which time Ngwenya pulled out an AK47 rifle and pointed the firearm at the complainant. The accused then loaded the boxes of cigarettes, which were being kept at the homestead, into their vehicles and drove to a nearby bush, where they hid them.

The court heard that the accused later took the cigarettes to a local fuel depot guardroom, which was being guarded by Munkuli. Acting on a tip-off, police went to the depot and found the accused persons offloading the contraband. Ngwenya opened fire on the detectives, resulting in his being shot once in the thigh and leading to his arrest. The other accused persons were arrested two days later and 132 boxes of cigarettes were recovered.

Help for home based care?

The prevalence of the HIV/Aids in rural communities has led to the mushrooming of homebased care projects.

One such project is Nne na Vhone Homebased Care (loosely translated as "Me and You" in Venda).

Started in 2006 at Malonga-Tshimbupfe in the Vuwani area, the project has become a beacon of hope to the local rural community.

The project is comprised of 16 women, all of them volunteers. The dedicated women deal with issues such as HIV/ Aids, TB and diabetes, and carry out home visits to patients and encourage patients to use their medication.

The project has received funding from

private organizations like ABSA bank and the Wheat Women's Trust Fund, who sponsored them with R25 000 and R5 000 respectively.

The project manager, Ms Matodzi Mulaudzi, said the project was started out of the need to assist the local villagers with access to medical care. "Our village, like other parts of the country, is ravaged by the scourge of HIVAids and other diseases. The local clinic is located at the adjacent Davhana and most of our people cannot walk there. They have big plans for the project, but these will not be realized if a sponsor does not come forth and bail them out.

Is it the end of the road for Makhado FM? A big question people are asking themselves is whether or not it is the end of the road for the community radio station, Makhado FM. This follows after the sheriff of the court in Louis Trichardt attached the equipment in possession of Luonde Media Resources, the not-for-profit organisation that runs Makhado FM. That the radio station is experiencing financial problems has been evident for quite some time.

Rumours of unpaid bills have been circulating and even the municipality was questioned on their practice to allow the station to go into arrears without cutting off the electricity.

The sale in execution has been ordered by the owner of the premises where Makhado FM has been operating. Apparently the owner, Mr Petrus Janse van Rensburg, grew tired of waiting for the radio station to pay him the rent that is due. He did not want to comment much on the issue when phoned this week, but did admit that the outstanding amount is substantial. “I have been carrying them for three years, but I simply cannot do it any longer,” he said. His pleas fell on deaf ears and he had no other option than to resort to a legal route to get the money owed to him.

In notices that appeared in newspapers the past two weeks, it shows that the sheriff had at-

tached equipment such as office furniture, television sets, computers, sound mixers, microphones, speakers and editing equipment.

The goods are to come under the hammer on October 19.

Mr Mavhungu Makatu, who deals with consumer education and awareness at ICASA, said this week that he was not aware of the matter. Mr Makatu is also the person responsible for all community radio stations in Limpopo. He said that he had visited the station recently and was aware of the fact that there were many challenges facing the station. “I am, however, not aware of the fact that the equipment was attached by the sheriff, following the summons,” he said.

Makatu said that if the equipment was sold at auction, it meant that whoever was responsible for the running of the station would be held accountable.

Several presenters and newsreaders had left Makhado FM in the past months, claiming a complete lack of transparency at the station.

Others, who spoke to Mirror on condition of anonymity, said that the station manager, Mr Moses Muneri, behaved as if he owned the station.

“The problem is that people do not know that they have the right to know how the station is being run. It is a community radio station and every member of the community has the right to know

what is going on at that radio station,” they said. This is the case because taxpayers’ money is used to establish a community radio station.

When contacted for comment on Monday, Mr Muneri stated he had no knowledge of the summons. He asked to be called the following day, as he was busy in a meeting.

Last year Zoutnet, a company that ran the Makoya 7-11 show on Makhado FM’s frequency, pulled out of a deal they had with the station. The company stated that it could not do business with an entity where a complete lack of transparency was present.

At that stage, Luonde Media Resources had yet again not submitted audited financial statements or held an annual general meeting to which all stakeholders were invited. Rather than get embroiled in a murky deal, the company opted to pull out and close its broadcasting unit.

Community radio stations are obliged by law to interact with members of the community and get their input on the running of the station. They are accountable to the communities which they serve. Section 21 companies, such as Luonde Media resources, are also obliged to have annual general meetings to which all stakeholders are invited and, during such meetings, audited financial statements must be presented.

Vhembe’s Chief Whip encourages pupils to study As boy who grew up attending shools in the rural area, Vhembe’s Chief Whip, Cllr Tshifhiwa Dali, knows how tough it is for learners to go beyond Grade 12.

His early years were shaped at Nzhelele, Tshiendeulu, Dzata and Mphephu School. He has been an educator, a referee and is also a well-known politician.

He, together with some friends, recently visited his former school, Dzata Secondary School in the Nzhelele area. They motivated learners to pull up their socks in order to pass at the end of the year. The entourage also left two soccer kits, for ladies’ and for men’s teams.

“We are not here to guarantee you passes. We felt that as the year draws to a close and exams approach, you need a boost. We cannot tell you now that you are all going to pass at the end of the year, but this will depend on your working extra hard in preparing for your examinations,” said Dali.

He said he was well aware of the situation in rural areas and the hardships they came accross in their day-to-day lives. He added that he felt indebted to his former schools and thought that ploughing back in the form of motivating his brothers and sisters as they approached their exams was the best thing to do.

“Learners are confused now and they need direction. They need a shoulder to lean on and this cannot only be left to educators and parents.

All community stakeholders should join hands for the sake of learners,” he said.

He told the learners to give their all to their studies and forget all the pleasures of the world.

“You have very little time left and it is up to you to make it or break it; the future is in your hands,” he said.

Stakeholders excited about taxi rank

Old Mutual donates blankets to centre

Stakeholders have hailed the construction of the new taxi rank next to Eskom's offices in Thohoyandou as a development that will improve their lives.

Phase one of the construction of the more than half-a-billionrand inter-modal development facility in Thohoyandou started in earnest on Thursday. The facility will house taxis to Vhufuli, Tshakhuma, and Tshilamba.

The first phase of this development comprises a three-storey taxi rank complex which is earmarked to be completed in eight months.

To give way to contractors, taxis to Tshakhuma, Tshilamba,Vhufuli and Vuwani have been temporarily housed at Zwavhavhili, next to the Thulamela municipal offices.

Hawkers who had stalls at the old rank were also allocated stalls at the temporary rank. By Friday, the area was a hive of activity, with tractors moving in and personnel who were about to start their work.

To celebrate international Mandela Day, staff at Old Mutual started collecting blankets to give to the needy. The insurance giant then offered to double the number of blankets collected by staff.

In Thohoyandou, this worked out very well for a local service organisation when Old Mutual handed over 64 blankets last Wednesday. This blanket-collection initiative was spearheaded

by Old Mutual's Ernest Ungulani.

The blankets were handed over to the Hope of Nations Church in Muledane to be utilized in their Life Care Centre project.

“We have started, and we can safely say all stakeholders are excited about this development.

We have apportioned all our hawkers spacious trading stalls at our temporary rank and they are happy about it. Even taxi owners are happy that they will soon have an improved rank,” he said.

He said he was happy about the discipline displayed by the hawkers, who were all licence holders. “We are enjoying maximum cooperation from both hawkers and taxi operators. We have erected signs to be followed and our officers will be out in full force to enforce the rules,” said Tshiila.

He said the second phase of the development would be the construction of the bus rank at Spar.

Vhembe District Taxi Council secretary Mr Azwihangwisi Tshithukhe said they were excited about the new development. He said that they were happy that the municipality did not take a unilateral decision but involved them through consultation.

The move to the temporary rank is also a boost for hawkers, who say they are reaping the rewards. Hawker Elisa Mundalamo said the move was paying dividends. Mundalamo (56) of Tsianda, who sells fruit, said she was happy that all who were at the old taxi rank were apportioned spaces at the temporary rank.

“Customers are becoming used to this place. We have been at this rank for two days, but we are already taking something to our homes,” she said. She said with the passing of time, business was very promising as the rank was not far from offices and shops. She added she was happy that they were given sheltered stalls, which would protect them as the rains were approaching.

Mrs Dzhivhuwo, the secretary of the Life Care Centre, welcomed Old Mutual's effort and expressed their gratitude for the gesture. Mr Mantshimuli spoke on behalf of Old Mutual and said that there were many organisations which were considered to receive the blankets. "The Life Care Centre, however, was selected as we could relate to its commitment in making a difference in other peoples’ lives."

Pastor Tshabuse, the founder of the Life Care Centre, thanked Old Mutual for their outstanding work and community involvement. He shared how the Life

Care Centre vision came about, saying that it was born from the Hope of Nations Church some three years ago and has been growing ever since.

He mentioned that they now had 33 boys aged between 10 and 18, some of whom are top students in their schools.

He singled out Tonderai, who is the best pupil in Grade 11 at Dimane High School. He indicated that this would encourage the boys and he said that he hoped that Old Mutual would continue to assist the centre in making a difference in the lives of the boys.

Help needed for unhappy Oscar (11) Oscar Ratshilingani was a happy, healthy boy when he went to a private doctor in Louis Trichardt in 2009 to be circumcised. His life then changed dramatically, as complications set in and the 11-year-old boy from Rathidili village outside Louis Trichardt started battling urinary problems.

When Oscar had to urinate, the flow was from underneath his penis, instead of the right way via the proper opening. His dreams and hopes became shattered. This problem also affected his social life, and nowadays this Grade 5 pupil hardly plays with other boys.

wa, resorted to using baby nappies on Oscar every time he goes to school. “It all started two days after the circumcision process. When I complained to the doctor after realising that my boy was no longer peeing the right way, she told me I was not cleaning his wounds properly,” she said.

Musandiwa added that she took the situation lightly at first, but realised it was more serious when the problems continued. “I had to use plastic bags, so that he could not wet his clothes. This is because I sometimes cannot afford to buy nappies as an unemployed mother," she explained.

The mother was then advised to take her son to the Louis Trichardt Memorial Hospital, where he was transferred to the provincial hospital in Polokwane. There he was hospitalised from October 26 to November 26 last year. "He could not even write his exams at school,” said Musandiwa.

She added that she is now struggling as she did not even have money to take him to the hospital for check-ups. “I ended up borrowing money from the loan sharks, thinking he would get better, but to no avail. I am now struggling to pay back the money,” said Musandiwa. Her husband, Michael, only depends on temporary jobs.

Oscar no longer plays his favourite sport, soccer, as a result. He said that it is often painful when he walks. “Other children laugh at me at school and it is very hard for me to cope under these circumstances,” said Oscar.

“I am afraid that this problem might ruin his future, because I don’t think his private parts will ever function properly,” said Musandiwa. She appealed to anyone who may be able to assist the family to please contact them. Those who want to assist Oscar can contact his family at 076 9760 962.

A wheelchair-bound pensioner who stays alone yearns for a better life and there is only one thing that will provide it, namely an electric wheelchair.

Although this 75-year-old pensioner, Mr Wilson Makaukau, was given a wheelchair by the Department of Health two years ago, he is finding it hard to move from one place to another because it is heavy and he is weak.

Makaukau, a resident of Malamulele, explains that he knows very well that life cannot be a bed of roses at his age, but with the wheelchair he is using, life is not pleasant at all.

This pensioner, who was never married, is staying alone in a township house given to him by his sister, who is staying in Johannesburg. “To move around, someone must push me and in a township, it is not easy to come across someone who can do that. I sometimes give some people tips from my pension grant to be pushed to pension points and to the old age home where I must go every day,” he said.

“But she cannot do everything. To go to the toilet with the wheelchair I am using is a big deal,” he says. Every morning he must go to the old age home in Malamulele, which looks after old people in the area. The project manager at Hlamalani Mala-

mulele Care for the Aged, Mr Siphiwe Shirinda, knows of Makaukau’s plight.

“We look after him, but we have no money to buy him an electric wheelchair. Each time he comes to the project, someone must push him and there is only one man who usually helps him,” he says.

Victim praises court for “good ruling” Livhuwani Sigogo once gave up on the justice system after a case of theft against him was postponed for more than two years.

Today, Sigogo (44), of Vuwani is singing the praises of the same department, following a "rare" sentence made by the Vuwani Magistrate Court in the same case. On September 14, the magistrate sentenced Mukwevho Maphili to 12 months' imprisonmet, with an option of a R2 500 fine, which was suspended for three years. On top of that,

Maphili was instructed to pay R1 500 cash to the same court before September 30.

The money, which is compensation to Sigogo for his stolen phone, will be collected by Sigogo from the clerk of the court.

This comes after an incident that happened on April 24, 2009, when Mapholi stole Sigogo's cell-phone from his car at the Vuwani complex.

In his comment over this ruling, Sigogo said: "I am over the moon about the court's ruling.

To be honest, I never expected

it. I am grateful for the manner in which the court made its ruling.

There was a time when I thought the suspect would not be found guilty because his mother, Ms Doreen Muthambi, who was his witness in court, defended him.

"As a disabled person, I never thought I was safe in my community. Now I have a totally different view about the justice system after this ruling. I am grateful to everybody who was involved in the whole process," said a happy Sigogo, who is wheelchair-bound.

Doctor’s degree for Happy Ramakhanya Former Tshisimani College of Education rector Happy Epraim Takalani Ramakhanya, who received his doctoral degree in curriculum studies from the University of Venda over the weekend, says his degree is relevant to his scope of work and will benefit educators.

Ramakhanya, who recently tied the knot with Makhado Mayor Mavhungu Luruli, is the centre manager at Makhado Continuing Professional Development Centre. He was one of the more than 500 students who received their degrees, diplomas and certificates during the September graduation ceremony held on Friday at the university’s auditorium.

sity of Venda, Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe, attended the event. A total of 48 certificates, 17 diplomas, 422 undergraduate degrees, 45 honours, 18 masters and 4 doctorate degrees were awarded.

In his remarks, Univen ViceChancellor Prof Peter Mbati said he was excited to announce that close consultations between Univen and the Minister of Department of Higher Education and Training, Dr Blade Nzimande, were bearing fruit. He said the minister had approved new enrolment and efficiency targets for the university. Clear targets of the university’s contribution in scarce skills areas, including engineering, life and physical sciences, human health and initial teacher education will

be enumerated.

“Our postgraduate outputs at Masters- and PhD-level have also been considerably jacked up,” he added. “As part of our differentiation strategy, we have plans to grow in areas of engineering and human health sciences. We must also strengthen the areas of rural development and poverty alleviation, indigenous knowledge systems and African languages,” he said.

Ramakhanya said as an educationist, he had observed the difficulties faced by teachers and pupils at schools over the years. “As a centre here we are tasked with the training of educators in commercial subjects in the whole province and I feel that my research will give solutions to educators. I have found that educators are failing in assessing their learners for effective teaching, because they are using the old methods and not using the new ones which are learner-centred,” he said.

Roman Catholic priest robbed at gunpoint Four armed robbers descended on the Roman Catholic Church in Beit Bridge and robbed the local priest of US$2 000, R4 000 and two laptop computers at gunpoint.

According to the priest, Father Jules Greber, the incident occurred last Thursday evening, shortly before midnight.

He said the suspects, two of whom were wielding rifles, forced the locked door open and demanded money. They did not, however, harm the priest. “I was asleep when I heard some noise emanating from the main door.

When I got up, four men confronted me. They ordered me not shout amid threats to shoot me and grabbed two laptops, US$2 000 and R4 000 and disappeared into the darkness,” Greber said.

The suspects found their way into the church premises after cutting the fence and creating an opening. Local police spokesper-

son Chief Supt Lawrence Chinhengo confirmed the incident, saying investigations were still underway.

The latest incident comes hot on the heels of a similar case in the border town in which the Beit Bridge Rural District Council lost US$200 000 when three unknown suspects pounced on a security guard manning the local authority’s premises. The armed robbers blindfolded the security guard and handcuffed him at gunpoint before they broke into the strong room and made off with the cash.

The suspects are also still at large. Meanwhile, police in Beit Bridge have intensified patrols along the Beit Bridge-Masvingo and Beit Bridge-Bulawayo highway, following an increase in the number of robbery cases.

Chinhengo said the patrols were aimed at flushing out criminals operating along the highways

and mainly targeting trucks and foreign motorists at laybye points and rail crossings. “We are experiencing a problem of robbery cases occurring along our major highways. It looks like the suspects, who operate as a syndicate, normally target trucks and South African-registered cars as they slow down at rail crossings or stop at laybye points, where they then pounce on them,” he said.

Chinhengo said they had since deployed police officers to the criminal hot spots. “We also want to urge motorists, particularly those travelling at night, to be wary of these highway robbers.

We have also intensified our patrols,” he said. Last week, police arrested three suspects believed to be linked to a syndicate. The suspects were caught while in the process of stealing from a South African haulage truck and goods worth thousands of rands were recovered.

Nine years in jail for two cattle thieves Two Beit Bridge men were each sentenced to an effective nine years in jail for stealing 47 cattle from a local businessman, Mr Edison Mbedzi.

Wonder Sibanda (30), an exemployee of Mbedzi, together with an accomplice, Rodgers Sibanda (40), pleaded not guilty to a charge of stock theft. They were, however, convicted by a local magistrate, Mrs Auxillia

The prosecutor, Mr Reason Mutimba, told the court that between 2007 and 2009, Sithole was employed by Mbedzi as a herdsman at Bargree Farm near Bubi outside Beit Bridge. He had the responsibility of taking care of the complainant’s property, including livestock.

Eight local veterinary students left for Kenya this month to study for a six-year BSc Veterinary Science degree at the University of Nairobi.

Five students, four women and a male student, left on Monday for their first year of studies. Muofhe Nemulodi, one of the female students, says she is excited to have been selected as one of the bursary recipi-

ents. “I can’t wait to land in Kenya and make it my home for the next five years,” she said while waiting for her plane at OR Tambo International Airport.

Three students who are already at master's level will depart on Sunday.

The Limpopo Department of Agriculture (LDA) has been sending students to study BSc Veterinary Science at the

University of Nairobi since 2008, due to the high demand for veterinarians in Limpopo.

Only the University of Pretoria (UP) offers such a qualification in South Africa.

The UP can only offer limited space and hence this endeavour. The LDA hopes this will benefit Limpopo and the country at large.

The provincial Police Commissioner, Lt-Gen Amon Mashigo, retired this week after he had served the police service for 30 years. He was bidden farewell in Polokwane on Monday.

He spent his last year in the SAPS as the Provincial Commissioner of Limpopo, after having been redeployed from the Free State last year.

The MEC for Safety and Security, Mr George Phadagi, wished Mashego well in his retirement.

Phadagi depicted Mashego as a true and professional policeman, who had dedicated his life to the fight against crime.

“Lt-Gen Mashigo has not disappointed during his tenure as the Provincial Police Commissioner.

The recently released the 2010/11 crime statistics bear witness to the good he has done for the people of Limpopo, in remarkably bringing down the provincial crime statistics. Limpopo has the lowest crime incidents compared

to the other eight provinces,” said Phadagi. He added that crime syndicates which had been wreaking havoc in the Makhado, Thohoyandou and Polokwane policing area had been smashed.

According to Phadagi, a strong message has been sent to career criminals from other provinces that Limpopo cannot be their playground. “All these strides in our fight against criminals have been made under the watch of Lt-Gen Mashego. It is therefore with a tinge of sadness that we today take leave of this crimebuster par excellence. On behalf of the government and the people of Limpopo, I thank him and wish him the best for the future,” he emphasized.

Phadagi said, however, that he was confident that Lt-Gen Mashigo’s successor would find a solid foundation “to build upon as we continue the fight against crime and criminality.” He said

“Refer critically ill patients to doctors” The chairperson of traditional healers in the Mopani district, Frank Chauke, has advised traditional doctors to send critical patients to medical doctors and not to wait too long with patients that they know they can’t heal.

Popularly known as Xikhavele, Chauke was speaking at a threeday conference by traditional healers, held at N’wamatatani village. The conference is a yearly event, aimed at encouraging members to share ideas and expertise on how to heal certain diseases. They also address challenges that they might have

encountered during the course of the year.

Speaking to guests from as far as Cape Town, Xikhavele urged fellow-healers not to stay too long with patients who have diseases that are beyond their ability to heal them. “Our aim is not only to get money, but to heal people as well,” he said.

“If you can’t treat a certain disease, just pass the patient over to those who can.” According to him, there are certain diseases that can’t be cured by traditional healers, “and that these diseases should be passed over to modern doctors,” as soon as detected, to

save the life of a patient.

“For instance, we as traditional healers can’t add water to the body of a patient. Therefore, every patient that needs water should be referred to the clinic or hospital as soon as possible.

Don’t wait too long till the patients reach a stage where they can’t be saved,” he said.

Asked on the issue of some traditional healers that are said to bewitch people or give clients concoctions meant to harm other people, Xikhavele stated that “those are not true healers, but individuals driven by greed to make money.”

Vhembe proud of its tourist attractions

Workers of Shoprite in Sibasa celebrated Heritage Day by wearing traditional attire on Saturday.

While the rest of the country was commemorating Heritage Month, the Vhembe District Municipality hosted tourists who visited several tourists attraction sites in the district.

The tour started on Tuesday (September 20) and ended with a cultural celebration on Saturday. Various cultural groups showcased their skills during the occassion.

The heritage sites that were visited included Mapungubwe, Thulamela in the Kruger Na-

tional Park, The Big Tree, Crooks Corner, Pafuri Camp and the Fundudzi Sacred Lake, Beit Bridge and the Mozambique border post.

According to Vhembe's Local Economic Development Officer, Mr Tiyani Marivate, the tour was a way of marketing the district and all its heritage sites.

"The tour is hosted annually to celebrate our history, values, norms and culture at the same time that we commemmorate heritage month," he said. Eighty

tourists, which included people from various parts of the SADC region, joined the tour. The participants included tour operators, tour guides, representatives from travel agencies, tour product developers and journalists.

Mr Reginal Chapfunga, editor for the Diplomat Magazine in Zimbabwe, expressed his appreciation for attending the tour. "I am happy to be in South Africa, especially visiting a site like Mapungubwe, that is so rich in African history," he said.

“Help government in fight against poverty” Limpopo Premier Cassel Matha­le has urged the church to partner government in its war against poverty.

Mathale,Thovhele Toni Mphephu Ramabulana, MEC Pinkie Kekana, and mayors Mavhungu Luruli and Tshitereke Matibe were guests during celebrations at the United African Apostolic Church headquarters at Ha-Mavhunga outside Louis Trichardt .

The event, which saw more than 20 bishops and thousands of the 1-million-strong Zionist church with members from all over Africa take part, took place on Sunday. After the arrival of other dignitaries, the congregation erupted in ululations when the archbishop made a grand entry in an open Jeep. The sleepy rural village became wide awake when hundreds of buses and other forms of transport descended on the traditional headquarters of one of the country’s few churches that have a real African flavour.

Mathale praised the church for their contribution towards the attainment of democracy in the country. He said the leadership of the ANC, led by Oliver Tambo, visited the church immediately after coming back from exile.

“As government, we will continue working with you,” said Mathale.

Mathale urged the church to work tirelessly towards the betterment of humanity. “We have declared a total onslaught on poverty and unemployment. We know that as a church you have always been a prospect partner from whom the unfortunate and disadvantaged draw hope,” he added.

Speaking at the same event, Thovhele Toni Mphephu urged congregants to continue supporting their leader and to pray for him that God will give him more years.

Before addressing the congregation, Archbishop Elias Miriri led guests, who included

premier Mathale and Thovhele Toni Mphephu, in the traditional Zionist dance.

Miriri made a clarion call to the youth to abstain from engaging in sex in the light of the rampaging HIV/Aids pandemic, which is threatening to tear communities apart. “The youth should dedicate their precious time and energy to their books; they should get educated in order to have decent jobs. Education is an inheritance that no one will take away from you; it will remain with you forever,” he said.

The national chairperson of the church, former professional soccer boss and businessman Peter Rabali, said they had such an occasion every year end. “We are here to pray for ourselves, leaders, politicians and other institutions. We are here to draw power and blessings. We need cooperation from other stakeholders that there be peace in the land. It is our duty as a church to pray for our leaders,” he said.

Operators want permanent employment Operation Smile is looking for patients Despite the Nandoni Dam's bursting its seams, many surrounding rural communities are still faced with a severe water challenge.

Malamangwa-Tshamavhudzi outside Thohoyandou has not been spared. In an effort to ease the water challenge in the villages, the local Thulamela Municipality supplied water pumps to the affected communities. The municipality provided supplied diesel for the machines, but communities had to operate the machines themselves.

Volunteers were chosen from amongst the community and were trained on how to operate and service the machines.

Nelson Negondeni is one of those who volunteered in 1993.

Negondeni (52) and nine others

from Ward 39 (formerly Ward 22) in Thulamela have been serving the community for R900 each, which is a monthly contribution from the community.

According to them, they had been promised absorbtion by the municipality since 2007, but till now their fate is uncertain. Each time they ask about the matter, they are told to wait. “We have served our community, hoping that things will one day change for the better. We have waited for far too long. Imagine - from 1993 till today, without a decent salary and with a family and children to take to school.

Our situation is frustrating,” said Negondeni.

Negondeni, a family man with six children, said life had not been friendly to him as his family

can hardly survive on the measly grant he gets from the community. “We were so excited when Thulamela Municipality recommended that we be absorbed by the Vhembe District. We thought our lives would be better as we were going to be permanently employed, but it is now too long,” added Negondeni.

Nkhangweleni Ramabusha is equally dissappointed. The father of four said he was tired of waiting. “We have been waiting patiently for too long, but nothing seems to be coming our way. We have had many empty promises and we want the municipality to own up and absorb us, so that we become permanent employees.

We are rendering an essential service and the lives of the community are dependent on us,” he said.

Vhembe District Municipality spokesperson Mr Matodzi Ralushai said there were processes to be followed in the hiring of staff. He said the affected individuals were working on a voluntary basis and the absorbtion recommendation were on humanitarian grounds, in light of the fact that they had served the community for a long time.

“I do not know how far that process has gone but will find out and update you," said Ralushai.

Cleft lips and palates are birth defects that occur early in a baby’s embryonic development.

A cleft is an opening in the lip, roof, mouth or soft tissue in the back of the mouth and, in some cases, is accompanied by an opening in the bone of the upper jaw or gums. A cleft palate occurs when the two sides of a palate do not come together, resulting in an opening in the roof of the mouth. Children with this type of facial deformity who do not receive the reconstructive surgery often have difficulty breathing, drinking, eating and speaking. This is apart from the ridicule that patients have to endure. A cleft palate or lip, however, can be fixed in 45

minutes by a plastic surgeon and paediatrician.

The surgical mission will take place in Klerksdorp and preregistrations will help OSSA determine how many people are in need of corrective surgery.

During a surgical mission, a team of medical and nonmedical volunteers will travel to the North West to provide the surgery. Operation Smile South Africa (OSSA) is calling on all preregistrations from Limpopo for their upcoming surgical mission that will take place from November 2 to 29 later this year.

Founded in 2006, OSSA joined Operation Smile Inc. as its 25th partner country and is based in Cape Town. OSSA medical volunteers provide free surgeries to children and adults throughout Southern and Central Africa who were born with either a cleft lip or palate. This year, also their fifth anniversary, OSSA has teamed up with the Limpopo Provincial Ministry of Health in looking for patients in the province.

There are 95 disabled pupils at the centre who are being taught sewing, welding, carpentry, pottery and gardening.

According to the project manager, Mr Rich Mbombi, the organisation is now faced with several huge challenges. “We do not have money to buy food for the children and also need money to buy equipment that the children need to use,” he said.

He added that water was also a serious challenge facing them.

“We wrote letters to various government departments, as

well as the Makhado Municipality, but nothing happened,” said Mbombi. He said they were now appealing to any good Samaritans who can help them. According to Mbombi, “Makhado Municipality promised them things, which they never do for them.” The spokesperson for the Makhado Municipality, Louis Bobodi said he would conduct a thorough investigation in this regard. “We are ready to help the organisation,” he said.

“Demoted principal must pay back” The community of Matsakali in Malamulele is livid after a school principal was demoted for the alleged mismanagement of funds amounting to R105 000. They are especially upset because of the government’s silence on the question of whether the money should be paid back to the school or not.

Nozozo Vala, who was principal of Ntsako High School in Matsakali, was demoted a week ago to be the deputy principal of Tsundukani Primary School in Greenfarm, some 30 kilometres away.

The community was notified by the school governing body of the developments last Tuesday.

A circular from the department said Vala was demoted because she had been found guilty of the mismanagement of funds. It did not say anything about recouping the mismanaged funds.

The chairman of the school governing body, Joe Vukeya, confirmed that the community is angry.

“They have accepted her demotion, but demand that she must pay back the money. This is what we are going to convey to the government,” said Vukeya.

He said after her demotion, a new management team was announced which was accepted by everybody. “But people are worried because the money in-

volved school fees paid by poor parents around 2005 and they even decided that if the government does not make her repay the money, they would sue her,” said Vukeya.

Vala refused to comment and said our reporter should be content with the information provided by the other sources. The spokesperson for the Department of Education, Pat Kgomo, confirmed that Vala was found guilty of the mismanagement of funds and demoted.

On whether she was supposed to repay the money, he said he would first consult, but at the time of going to press he was still not clear on this issue.

The court heard that on 20 September at around 16:00, Moyo entered Zimbabwe through Beit Bridge Border Post from South Africa. He then proceeded to his rural home, where he took his wife, Elementina Roveya, and sister-in-law Lucia Nyathi, who had no travel documents, and went back to Beit Bridge. The court heard that, on arrival at the border, Moyo instructed Roveya and Nyathi to move ahead of him with the understanding that he would follow later. Moyo was to negotiate with the immigration officer and security guards manning the exit gate, so that they would facilitate the two women’s smooth passage into South Africa.

Moyo was arrested by alert local police officers who had been monitoring his movements at the border. Roveya and Nyathi were also intercepted and taken to the local immigration offices, where they were each fined US$10 for attempting to cross the border illegally.

Another good victory for Dynamos

Soccer grannies happy with new kit

Last weekend was a joyful one for Dynamos.

They deposited another three points into their league account. The Pride of Giyani beat Altie FC 3-0 in their NFD league match at the Senaba Stadium in Johannesburg on Saturday.

Dynamos made their intentions clear from the first whistle. It was not surprising to see them open their account in the 17th minute. Their last two goals were scored in the last half.

FC Cape Town have good reason to celebrate.

They beat Witbank Spurs 2-1 at the NNK Rugby Stadium in Cape Town. Spurs are now lying in the second-last position on the log, following a string of poor results.

Mpumalanga Black Aces beat Bay United 2-1 at the Puma Rugby Stadium in Witbank.

Dynamos must beat African Warriors in order to remain in contention for the league championship when the two sides meet at the Giyani Stadium on Sunday afternoon. The spirits are high in the camps of both Warriors and Dynamos, because they had successful results in last weekend's matches.

According to the assistant coach for Warriors, Mr Joel Masutha, Dynamos must not expect a walk in the park on Sunday. He sent a chilling warning to the Giyani team, saying they will be embarrassed to the bone if they take Warriors for granted. Masutha said that they had found a winning combination of late after losing their opening two league matches.

The other NFD fixtures this weekend are: Chippa United vs Atlie FC (tonight); Bay United vs Thanda Royal Zulu, Carara Kicks vs Vasco da Gama and Blackburn Rovers vs FC Cape Town (Saturday); FC AK vs University of Pretoria; United FC vs Sevutsa Stars and Witbank Spurs vs Mpumalanga Black Aces (Sunday).

Mabaso, the donation was a way of giving back to the community. "We have been touched by the plight of the grannies, who seemed committed and dedicated to sports but lacked resources.

We then decided to buy them a brand-new soccer kit and soccer balls," he said.

The team has 18 players and also challenges other granny teams in soccer matches. The team manager, Ms Thilivhali Nemaungani, said the team was a special project of the Davhana Society for the Care of the Aged, an NGO that looks after the elders in the village.

The organization was first established in 1998. The organization currently has 31 elders attached to it. The centre manager, Ms Thilivhali Nemaungani, said the team was established with the aim of helping the elders to relieve stress and keep them healthy. "Exercise is very important for the elders who spend most of their time sitting downnot doing anything," she said.

Mr Johannes Davhana, one of the elders and the captain of the team, said that he felt young again. "Excersising is really helping me a lot, and I also enjoy playing football," he added.

The Hasivho Project donated a brand new soccer kit to the Davhana elderly soccer team.

Mapuloni Highlanders registered their second victory for the season when they beat Phalama Young Vultures 1-0 in their SAB League match at the Phalama grounds on Sunday.

The result was not a true reflection of the game as Highlanders squandered numerous scoring opportunities. In the first instance, their right flank, Gumani Mbulaheni, caused an upset when his volley missed the goal mouth in the eighth minute.

Ndivhuwo Tshirundu committed a similar blunder moments thereafter. He dribbled past three Vultures defenders in a row and unleashed from outside the box. The ball hit the crossbar and bounced back into the field of play.

Young Vultures threatened to score in the 24th minute. Their overlapping midfielder, Vhali Makhura, watched in disbelief as his well-struck volley missed the target by inches.

The home side effected the first change to their starting lineup nine minutes before the referee blew the half-time whistle. They introduced Takalani Mphephu for Gift Mudzunga, who was looking weary from the onset. No goal was seen during the first half, despite the fact that Highlanders were

Limpopo to host the final SA Games Polokwane will play host to the fifth and final South African Games, which will take place from October 2 to 8.

The opening of the Games will take place on October 1 at the Peter Mokaba Stadium and about 6 000 participants are expected to participate in the event.

The Games were officially launched on Thursday at the Fusion Boutique Hotel in Polokwane. Youths between the ages of

13 and 19 years can participate.

During this year's event, athletes will participate in 13 sporting codes, including, cricket, soccer, rugby, tennis, athletics, table tennis, swimming, boxing and hockey. The Deputy Minister of Sports and Recreation said during the launch that the aim of the games was to unearth talent in all the sporting codes.

“We are mainly focusing on sports stars, especially those

coming from the rural areas and those living with disabilities. We want to see them making it big and representing the country at international level,” said Oosthuizen.

The MEC for Sports, Arts and Culture, Ms Joyce Mashamba, said Limpopo did not only wish to host the most successful SA Games, but also wanted to top the list of medals at the end of the tournament.

Another point for Leopards

Black Leopards failed to collect maximum points against Maritzburg United, with whom they played to goalless draw in their Absa Premiership League match at the Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane on Saturday.

The Leopards’ keeper, Postnet Omony, was a star to watch throughout the tough game. He made his presence felt in the ninth minute when he miraculously sprang like a well-oiled machine to punch Byron Hendrieks’ volley away for a corner kick.
