Tel: 015 962 1008 When one starts to mention the surname Madima it should shout a strong message to your ears. From generation to generation they have conquered and have always been flying their flag high for ages. From literature to entertainment, they seem to rule the game. I remember the likes of Itani, Lufu, and Maduvha, the list is endless. Ladies and Gentlemen, we now introduce the latest offspring of one of the most talented families in the history of Venda tribe “Shumi Madima”. * Hi Shumi and welcome to Makoya Mag. Hi thank you very much for having me. * You are now the youngest flag bearer in the family; do you find it a challenge? There is a lot of pressure because of the people in my family who are well-known. It makes me proud to be a Madima. We are an interesting lot, but I actually tend to avoid mentioning my surname because I want people to know me for what I have to offer. For the most part I’m really just doing me and finding my path. I’m not trying to sing like my sister or write like my grandfather, but I cannot deny that coming from a family of creatives has allowed me to do what I do. It makes me proud, especially thinking of my grandfather, the late E.S Madima, and to know that I’m one of the people who inherited his talent. My parents have played a big part, having been in the ECHO band and therefore music was always a part of me. My sister Maduvha is my light. I don’t think anyone will ever understand how awesome she is to me. The support she’s given me with this music thing goes beyond what I expected. My brother DJ Shandu is my hero, the coolest dude ever and I’m sure a lot who know him will agree. Mukoma is my other brother, I really hope you guys will get to hear what he has to offer because he’s so soulful and has one of the best voices I’ve heard. * How long have you been in the industry? I don’t know what determines that but I guess I can say, based on the fact that I’ve only been on radio now, that it’s been about three months. It was around July 2010 though that i started pursuing a solo career in music. Before that, I was part if the University of Johannesburg Choir and we would go on tour and perform and rehearse three times a week so it was a real music job. I owe a lot to that experience. It taught me that a lot of hard work goes into the industry if longevity is what you’re looking for. * What is your favourite genre at the moment? That’s a very difficult question to ask a musician because I expose myself to different genres and I draw inspiration from it. Afro Jazz was my first love, but now I have now grown to love soul and what people call “world music”. These are genres that are very open and unlimited and allow you to experiment
with various elements. My favourite artists, whose league I aspire to be in are Corinne Bailey Rae, Sade and Asa. I love, love, loooooooove The Muffinz and Freshlyground. I make an effort to listen to people who aren’t popculture like Ingrid Michaelson and Maverick Sabre. Raggae is a genre that speaks to me. I haven’t explored much in that department but I appreciate Bob Marley and Colbert Mukwevho. * What are your special aspirations for women this month? I wish for women to know that you can be whoever you want to be. There’s a lot of judgement, unfortunately amongst women themselves, of the choices we make. I think we need to support each other in the paths we choose to take, be it whether one chooses to be a stay-at-home mother with five children, or whether one values their career more than family life at the moment. And even if you want the best of both, go for it! The right path is the one that makes your heart happy, pursue that. * Three things you can’t live without? I have three things, God, love and Faith. God is Love. Love made me. It is an unconditional ever-present force that exists despite my flaws. I would not be where I am if it were not for Love. And I could not stand if I wasn’t sure of the fact the God is love. This is the reason I do what I do. I was loved enough to be given the talents I have, and now I must love people enough to share this with them and give them the best of me. Faith is that force that lets me know I am worthy of reaching my dreams. I would have quit by now if it wasn’t, because I refuse to believe otherwise. My faith won’t fail me. * Tell us about your project and where can we find it? I do not have albums and only released singles which are currently playing on radio. I wanted to test if people would like the work I’m doing and so far I truly appreciate all the feedback I’ve been getting, most especially the airplay from the radio stations. We are now working on making these singles available for download. You can also follow me on twitter @ thisisshumi or find my page Shumi on facebook for updates on my gigs. I have an amazing band! They are worth coming to watch. * Can you briefly share with us about your Hansa experience? Earlier this year I entered the Hansa Pilsener competition where the winners got to open for Ushers. I made it to the Top12 but unfortunately did not make the final 6. I loved every bit of the experience and the best thing I got from that was the support which I believe I still have and will always cherish. * Thank for your time, we’ll hook up with you some other time.... You’re welcome. Wish you all the best

Ri vha vhudza zwo tou ralo! (Bangakupalula) LETTER Empowering women for work or to bully I have been assessing male behavior for a while now and I am saddened by how much they are hurting, and showing it in so many different ways. This letter fits very well with the sister month theme. It is good and wonderful that women empowerment is in progress, and it is certainly not an overnight thing. Where are we to draw the line in our women empowerment? Out of spite, I’ve heard men say ‘women will sleep with their men’. I think that as a society, we are slowly and surely losing it. Women are CEO’s at home, they take their work positions to their homes and bedrooms, wherein they were supposed to leave them at the gates of their work places. Is that what women empowerment is all about? Conside this term: modern families and dads, where normal roles change due to circumstances, e.g: wife only working. It certainly does not hold water to women being CEO’s at home. Men’s egos are bruised easily by even the smallest thing and we, as women know that very well and therefore stand firm on being independent, not to bruise but to feel whole as individuals. The is this shift that needs to take place, where a man Sees a woman not as property; a tool for his needs or a brainless person who does not know what is good for them. Men have a tendency of thinking that women still think like their mothers, who knew nothing about growing as individuals. We were raised to believe that as a woman you grow up, go to school and marry, which is still believed by some women. Today women grow up being made aware of opportunities in things they can be involved in, which can make them happy as individuals. Instead of going to school so as you may be married, a women goes to school to enjoy the fruits of her hard work. Please hear me clearly, I am not against being married, it is good to be married, to find a friend and someone that loves and respects you. Not someone who thinks that giving you money; a home and children makes him a real man. It makes him a man under obligation and he will therefore find a women he can be relaxed and be friends with.Women empowerment is not an opportunity to hurt men for regarding us less important, its an opportunity for us (men and women) to see life with a different eye, where we do not feel threatened by work positions and it certainly is not referring to bullying men at home. * By Thato Ledwaba

Alex Phango is Enthused by the desire to express himself in writing
ALEX is actually called ADMIRE ALEX PHANGO. He was born some 25 years ago and is currently based at Tshiozwi village in the Sinthumule area. He says that
he is a humble, down-to-earth kind of a person. Some describe Alex as a kind and loving person, ever smiling, docile and abstemious. When he first entered into the media industry professionally it was in the year 2009. Like any other average guy, Alex was stranded in the islands of unemployment, desperately looking for a job. He approached a variety of companies in other sectors, apart from the media and even asked his friends to keep a close ear to the ground for him. It took forever to get any response. Because he was still new in Limpopo, particularly Makhado, he had no connections whatsoever and he had to confront this phase alone. Then one day when he was relaxing at home in Tshiozwi, he received a call from his best friend, Mashudu Masinyane. The friend asked him if he knew anything about journalism. Without hesitation, Alex excitedly told him that it was his field of expertise. “He told me a friend of his had just launched a new newspaper called MORNING LIGHT and he needed some journalists and marketing consultants,” said Alex when speaking to Makoya last week. Then he had to meet them the following morning with his curriculum vitae and a compiled real story as an example of what he could do. After the interview, instead of just being a journalist he secured himself employment as an Admin manager and soon he was promoted to the editor’s post for the company. “That how I got my break through into the media world,” he explains. Alex says that, as a journalist he is motivated by the
urge for unveiling the truth and encouraging justice. “I am also enthused by my desire to articulate myself fully in writing,” he says. “Morning Light newspaper might be now defunct, but to be honest it gave me a lot of experience in the media.” Since then it became clear that Alex belonged in the media industry. “I had attended school up to college level and due to financial problems I couldn’t continue with my studies. At college my main focus was on sociology and with it I learnt a few things about collecting data for the investigative media, law enforcements under sociological methodologies and also a few things in public relations, the rest was by the grace of God,” he illustrates. In the media industry Alex has familiarised himself with many as a multi-tasked person. In various companies in the CBD he is known as the marketing consultant, in the field a journalist. “Predominantly, in the office and at seminars and press conferences, I am The News Editor.” He maintains that as a writer his rich vocabulary was a product of the education he got in Zimbabwe. “I grew up and studied there and truly speaking it was a beautiful experience,” he explains. “Zimbabwe may be known for a lot of things but the education is awesome and I give my teachers credit and not forgetting my elder brother Mxolisi Nsingo who encouraged me all the way.” In South Africa, Alex maintains, journalism has played a greater role in keeping the populace conversant on daily issues, and current affairs globally. Apart from journalism, he works full time at True Worship Christian Centre, helping with the Church’s admin work. He is also the current editor of the only church/ gospelcommunity newspaper in Limpopo soon to hit the streets. Watch this space!
The heart that loved
A serial story by Lutendo Mphadzha
long time, but now the things were in her life again. No, this can’t be. Ruke had moved on with her life, she now has a promising marriage ahead and how can she disappoint her father again as she did before with Pascal?.” A smooth touch on her shoulder awakened her from her reverie, it was her mother,“My daughter here are your in-laws they are back in our lives, I know this is what you had always wished for, why don’t you forgive Pascal?” “I think I am old enough to differentiate between the good and the bad, so please - Continues from previous edition ... I will have to think about this, repeating my mistakes won’t be my choice, but tell ‘’My in-laws, what brings you here?” him I had forgiven him before he even asked Ruke’s mother, while grabbing a knew”. She stood and walked out of the chair to sit on. The in-laws, with frowning room. faces told Ruke,s mother that something “Where are your manners, is that was wrong with the gathering. “My inhow I raised you…….?” Ruke’s mother laws, forgive us for just showing up screamed at her as she walked out. without notice, but what brought us here What Ruke’s mother thought about is not good enough…..” said Pascal’s was wealth; they had this something in mother. “In-laws I think riddles won’t common with Ruke’s father that they help because you had already alerted both did not know. “ My in-laws, I know my insides”. Ruke’s mother moved to she did not mean what she just said, she the edge of the chair as a sign of waiting is just in a shock of you being here, I enough. will speak to her and I will get back to There was silence in the house until you” she gave them her promising smile Pascal’s father broke the silence. as she used to do which made them feel “Pascal was involved in a car accident things were promising. which left him paralyzed and he sent us Weeks, days, hours passed as the to seek for forgiveness in this family so clock did not stop ticking. Ruke was he can regain peace again although he so deeply in love that she even forgot wouldn’t be able to walk again.” Ruke’s about Pascal. Little did she know that tears dropped smoothly, tears were water she had lit a fire where there was water that she had not been experiencing in a nearby. She did not know that the man
she was in love with was married; her father wanted money and cared less about her future. She was shocked and in an unbearable pain when the news reached her ears. The pain of love for the second time in her life. She thought of going back to Pascal but did not want to look like an idiot of life after what he had done to her. Before she knew it Pascal paid her a visit. “I know I am the last person on earth you would like to set your eyes on but please find in your heart a place to forgive me”, Pascal wanted to kneel down but only to realize that it couldn’t happen as he had lost both of his legs in the accident. He continued, “You can only differentiate between treasures and coal, when you are facing challenges. I have done you wrong but please forgive me” Ruke tried to speak but no word slipped her lips, this time even tears did not come through her eyes. Everything in her became paused. How can she go for a cripple, whereas she is still a well-built human being? “I know Lucy brought bad, unbearable and painful news. The pleasures of this world blinded me but now I see. You are the only wifely material I ever came across in the journey of this life”. Ruke’s mother came out of the house to help Pascal with the begging but for Ruke all she could offer this time was forgiveness not love. THE END

** Is it David Mmbi or do we say Mbihara ** Mr. David Mmbi is currently making waves with his new debut Album. His sound has a somewhat Traditional and Jazzy Feel but it’s different it’s unique. Thee David Mmbi warmed his fans when he was performing at Makhado annual show the funny part came when he started performing Zahara “Loliwe” and that’s where he hit me by shock I mean he has got hit tracks that people love but Why did he choose a Zahara track now he sounded like a Mbihara, a cross artistic breed of Mmbi and Zahara. Mr. Mmbi, with respect next time stick to your music. The one we love and support. If we want Zahara we will go to the Eastern Cape.
