The killing of a woman at Musina on Saturday caused different structures to call for an end to violence. Ms Tshamaano Sehlare (35) of Rabali Posaito Zone 2 was allegedly killed by her boyfriend at Musina Matswale phase 7.

Sehlare was reportedly fighting with her boyfriend in their rented room when she was killed.

She was allegedly strangled and stabbed in the head with a sharp object.

Her lifeless body was discovered by the owner of the house, who went to the house to investigate since she had heard a fight the previous night.

Community set houses alight of two accused of burning “Ben 10”

The houses of a 38-year-old woman and her 59-year-old mother in Ramahantsha were set alight by angry community members on Monday night. The two are accused of pouring petrol over a young man and setting him on fire.

The incident, where the 23-year-old Tshimangadzo Masuwa was seriously injured, made headlines last week.

He apparently was the lover of the much older Muyahabo Sadiki. Such young lovers are commonly referred to as “Ben 10s” in local circles. Masuwa was allegedly accused of cheating and was attacked by the woman and her mother.

He was seriously injured in the altercation and had to be rushed to the Louis Trichardt Memorial Hospital for emergency treatment. He was later transferred to Polokwane for treatment at the provincial hospital.

Muyahabo Sadiki and her mother, Johanna Sadiki, were arrested after the incident.

They appeared in the Tshilwavhusiku Magistrate’s Court

last week, facing charges of assault and attempted murder.

Johanna Sadiki was released on bail of R2 000. The two appeared again in court on Monday and the case was postponed to 18 February.

After Monday’s court hearing, angry community members from Ravele started to block access roads with stones and burning tyres and went to the suspects’ houses at Ramahantsha. Rumours were doing the rounds that the victim, Tshimangadzo, had died in hospital. Two houses and a car were set on fire. The fires damaged the roofs and the walls of the houses and clothes, beds, blankets, a stove, fridge and all the furniture were destroyed.

A spokesperson for the Masuwa family, Mr Marubini Masuwa, said earlier this week that Tshimangadzo was not dead and was recovering in the Polokwane Hospital. He explained that he was transferred from Louis Trichardt Memorial to Polokwane Hospital last week, where he was admitted to the intensive care unit. This week he was transferred to a

normal ward.

Masuwa said that he was shocked to hear rumours that Tshimangadzo was dead. “We were told that everyone across the area knew that he was dead,” he said. “People should just stop this rumour,” he urged. Masuwa also said that the family distanced themselves from the arson attack on the two houses and car.

The police confirmed that a case of arson has been opened, but at this stage no one has been arrested. The investigations are continuing.

Ms Ayanda Ndhlovu, one of the employees who took part in the fun walk, commended the municipality for coming up with the initiative, “because it builds a workforce that is dedicated and productive”.

Following the draw that was conducted at the Nedbank offices in Johannesburg three weeks ago, the Premier Soccer League (PSL) recently announced the dates and venues for the last-32 fixtures.

The first match will be played on Wednesday, 5 February, while the last one will be seen on Tuesday, 11 February.

The opening match will be between the defending champions, TS Galaxy, and Chippa United at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Port Elizabeth. TS Galaxy became the first GladAfrica Championship League team to lift the trophy.

They beat Kaizer Chiefs 1-0 at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban in the final.

The 2011 finalists, Black Leopards, will host North West University FC at the Thohoyandou Stadium on Sunday, 9 February. Lidoda Duvha will host Stellenbosch FC, at the Thohoyandou Stadium on Sunday, 2 February, before locking horns with North West University.

Black Leopards will have nobody to blame should they fail to secure a place in the last-16 stage of the competition. Apart from the fact that Lidoda Duvha will be playing in front of their home crowd, North West University are an amateur side.

The chairperson of Baso Foundation, Mr Masingita Mabaso, donated full uniforms to the learners from two disadvantaged schools in Vuwani last Friday.

Mabaso said that the foundation had been started with the sole aim of helping disadvantaged learners whose parents could not provide uniforms for them. Mabaso, a former pupil at one of the schools, said he knew the hardships faced by many parents in the area.

“Our area is one of the poorest areas in the province, and if we do not do something for our learners, some can end up dropping out of school because of uniforms and school fees,” he said. He added that the foundation was living to its objectives of seeing to it that no learners went to school because of a lack of uniforms.

Mabaso said they felt indebted to the community that had guided them. He added that the foundation would be very happy if the beneficiaries followed all the rules of the foundation and those of the school. He also urged all learners to study hard and be

responsible members of the community who would, in turn, help other disadvantaged children.

Mr Bernard Ratshili, the principal of Davhana High, could not hide his happiness.

He said it was good to be receiving help from a former pupil. “Now we can see the fruits and we are very grateful for what the Baso Foundation has done today,” he said.

He told the learners to count themselves lucky to be receiving the uniforms as learners at

Tombstone stolen from graveyard

Some tombstones were missing, and other tombstones were broken. The baffling discovery was made by members of the community who came to the graveyard last Friday morning to prepare a grave for one their relatives who had passed on.

Mr William Makhavhu, whose father’s tombstone had been removed, said they had spent a lot of money to construct the tombstone, “because we want our beloved deceased to rest in peace. Fired security guard back at work

By Bernard Chiguvare One of the dismissed workers of the Tshau Security company was reinstated in December, following an arbitration process at the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA).

Tshau Security provides guards at municipal properties in Musina. In October last year, some of the employees started complaining that they were not being treated fairly by the company. They alleged that they were not getting paid regularly and that the company was in breach of their work agreements.

Glandar, who asked to be mentioned by her first name only, said that, at the time, they

had tried without success to get the company’s management to address the issues. According to her, they were served with disciplinary letters.

The five were accused of participating in an illegal strike or work stoppage and intimidating other employees. The charges against them included the incitement of other employees to behave in a disorderly and disruptive manner. They were all dismissed from work the same day, after the hearing.

The workers reported the matter to the South African Transport and Allied Workers’ Union (SATAWU) and it was taken to the CCMA. Following the CCMA’s arbitration process, Glandar was reinstated and asked to

start working in January 2020.

“Though I am back at work, I am still struggling because Tshau Security was supposed to pay me for the two months it had fired me. At the moment, I am finding it very difficult to make ends meet. I am borrowing and have to pay back with interest,” said Glandar.

She claims that she has called the company several times to determine when the company will pay her. “The company said that they would pay me at the end of January, but I am not very sure of this since they were supposed to pay me last year in December,” she says.

The management of the Tshau Security company were contacted for comment, but they declined the opportunity.

Thohoyandou prisoners urged to use skills they gain while in prison

By Silas Nduvheni The Deputy Minister of Correctional Services, Nkosi Phathekile Holomisa, urged prisoners in Thohoyandou Correctional Centre (formerly Matatshe) to take advantage of the skills they gain while serving their sentences in prison.

“We don’t want you to commit some serious crime as soon as you are released from prison, because prison is not a good place for people reasoning about their future. We will be happy if you do something and

change your life for the better.

In the life after prison, you can open your own businesses like a hair salon, car wash, or use your sewing skills,” he said.

Holomisa said his department would assist offenders serving sentences in prison by rehabilitating them and giving them skills and also furthering their education, so that they became meaningful community members as soon as they were released from prison.

According to him, offenders will also be taught how to handle anger as some of the prisoners were serving sentences

because they could not control their anger and committed crimes, such as murder.

He encouraged community corrections, where they rope in traditional leaders to play a pivotal role in uniting offenders with their communities, as soon as they are released from prisons.

Let’s end scourge of attacks, says Chief Tshivhase

By Maanda Bele The spokesperson for the Tshivhase royal council, Chief Luvhaivhai Tshivhase, condemned the recent attacks on women in domestic disputes. Since the beginning of this year, several incidents were reported where women had been killed, mostly by their partners.

Just a week ago, the whole country was mourning the death of a young medical intern, Shongile Pretty Nkhwashu, who was found dead in her room at Mankweng hospital. The past week, a 35-year-old woman was found murdered in her rented room in Musina. Her boyfriend is suspected to have killed her, following an argument.

“Why is the rate of killing and abusing of women and children so high?” asked Chief Luvhaivhai. “Enough is enough! Together we can end this gender-based violence against women and children in our society,” he said.

Tshivhase emphasised that everyone must work tirelessly to make sure that women and children near them were safe. “We cannot continue to live lives that are constantly under siege, where we are not all enjoying the fruits of our constitutional democracy,” he said.

“Gender-based violence is one of the most devastating social challenges facing our young democracy. All stakeholders in our society must come together and find ways and means to end Chief Luvhaivhai Tshivhase. this,” he said.

House for murdered student’s family

By Kaizer Nengovhela The family of the late Portia Ramakavhi (31), who was brutally killed last December, also suffered the frustration of not having proper shelter to live in. This suffering will soon come to an end, however, as good Samaritans are busy building them a four-room house.

The MEC for Social Development, Ms Nkakareng Rakgoale, Speaker of the Legislature Mavhungu Lerule-Ramakhanya and the Makhado Mayor, Cllr Samuel Munyai, conducted a sod-turning ceremony at what is to be the new home of the family at Ha-Mutsha last Thursday.

Ramakavhi was allegedly hacked to death by her boyfriend. She left behind two young children, aged 6 and 10.

A good Samaritan, Ms Zorha Khan, pledged to build the house for the needy family. Rakgoale expressed appreciation during the sod-turning event for the work that is being done by some of the businesspeople who are working in the communities.

Ms Khan said that the project would be completed within three weeks to allow the family to move into their new house. “We are trying our best to speed up the project, “Khan said.

The unemployed uncle of Ramakavhi, Mr Khaukani Mulovhedzi, who was left to fend for the two children, expressed his joy. “I am very happy to see these people building the house for us,” he said. “It has been a hard journey of pain and frustration for us to find our eyes finally seeing this house rising from the ground.”

Boy (13) drowns in the Dzindi River

By Silas Nduvheni The Madzinge family in Lwamondo-Mutandani village outside Thohoyandou is in mourning, following the discovery of the dead body of a young boy from the family who went swimming on Saturday. His body was found on Sunday.

Family spokesperson Ms Takalani Madzinge said Given Matamela (13), a Grade 8 learner at the Luvhaivhai Secondary School in Lwamondo-Mutandani, had gone swimming in the Dzindi River with his friends on Saturday.

“We became worried when he did not return on Saturday night, and we had a sleepless night. We called a meeting with the villagers and launched a search for him on Sunday morning, accompanied by his friends who went swimming with him,” said Madzinge.

“His journey to a better future was cut short when his dead body was discovered, and we are still saddened as both his father and mother are unemployed,” added Madzinge.

According to Madzinge,

the family is also devastated because they have no idea who will help them to bury the deceased.

Limpopo police spokesperson Brig Motlafela Mojapelo confirmed the incident. He said an inquest docket had been opened with the Vuwani police and they were investigating the incident. He added that the deceased had allegedly been swimming with other children when he had drowned at the Dzindi River.

“It is further alleged that the police and community went to the river to conduct a search, where they managed to retrieve him. The deceased was certified dead at the scene and police investigations are still going on,” Brigadier Mojapelo said.

The chairperson of Munna Ndi Nnyi?, Dr Bardwell Mufunwaini, who also visited the family, prayed for them and offered his condolences, said that he was very touched about the alarming rate of young people who were dying and who should have been future leaders.

55 Years of dedicated service Phalaphala FM staff members are excited when they look back at where they had come from … and they will celebrate their 55th birthday in February.

The station started broadcasting in Tshivenda in 1965 as the then Radio Venda.

SABC Limpopo provincial acting general manager Mr Freddy Sadiki said in his congratulatory message that Phalaphala FM continued to source news and had different programmes that educated and entertained the listeners.

“We thank the leadership and the entire Phalaphala FM staff for their contribution towards the success of the station. We also thank the station’s listeners for their support, because the station is what it is today because of their continuous support,” he said.

Sadiki added that they were proud of the listeners “as they continue to support our station and participate daily in our shows, including our events”.

He said that the aim of the station was to educate, preserve, promote and protect the Tshivenda culture and customs and, under the good current leadership, Phalaphala FM was broadcasting shows aimed at not only informing, educating and entertaining listeners, but also covering every aspect of Tshivenda life in a contemporary world.

“The radio station remains firm in being an endearing and friendly radio station that is always readily accessible, relevant, and a custodian of the Tshivenda language and culture,” Sadiki said. “Today we have continued to contribute to and have a positive impact on the different communities, with campaigns such as the donation of school shoes, houses, boreholes and food hampers.”

He emphasised the good relationship with the listeners and “we made it easier for them to reach us, unlike back in the days when they had to write letters to reach us. We also have social media platforms that show our activities and events. We also have an annual overseas tour that has been in existence for over 20 years,” he said.

The annual overseas tour has visited countries such as Greece, France, India, China, Argentina, Thailand, Brazil and Turkey. The tours have been the flagship of the station, ensuring that Phalaphala appeals to non-Tshivenda-speaking audiences as well.

The acting station manager, Ms Sharon Ravele, added that the celebration of 55 years also highlighted Phalaphala FM’s integral role in community development by creating activities such as the traditional dance competitions that had been running for more than 10 years. These cater for Xitsonga, Sepedi and Tshivenda dance groups in Limpopo and Gauteng.

For the past few years, the station has embarked on a journey of developing Tshivenda music. This has been done through the annual Tshivenda Music Awards. Since the inception of the awards, Phalaphala FM has invited Vhavenda musicians to workshops to cultivate their talents.

Home-made car for self-taught “engineer” from Musina News from Musina “South Africa is full of possibilities.” These are the words of self-taught “engineer” Rekkie Moyo of Musina, who has just completed building his second car from discarded scrap material.

Moyo first made a name for himself when he built a 2010 Soccer World Cup car, which was featured in the FIFA World Cup book.

In 2012, he built a very comfortable, battery-powered wheelchair, which he donated to a local disabled man.

His latest car, which is being powered by a Ford V8 engine, is the centre of attention wherever he drives. “I recently drove it to Thohoyandou and it was very difficult for me to return, because everyone wanted to take a picture with my unique car. This was a clear indication that people love what I do.”

He said his two-seater car went by the name of Kandamu, which is a combination of the initials of the names of his children. “This is a very unique initiative and I wanted it to have a unique name. Interestingly, most of the operations in the car are electronic and they use buttons,” he added, while starting the engine with a button that is attached to the driver’s door.

He added that both the bonnet, boot and panoramic roof were electronic. “I just press buttons, and everything opens up. As a person who loves music, I have also fitted a loud sound system, so that I can always feel at home when I drive the car.”

Although some people can just see it as an ordinary car, Moyo said he wanted to encourage people to take good care of nature and recycle

unused resources whenever possible. “This is the reason why I painted it green and boldly displayed the text Water care, recycled project and Natural resource management. When people read these texts when the car moves, to me this is a very big opportunity to raise awareness on the preservation of the natural resources. Most of the time I drive it to schools, shops and various public areas to raise awareness.”

He encourages other talented community members not to give up on their dreams, despite their poor financial background. “I had no single penny in my pocket when I started building this car two years ago. Using my brains profitably, I managed to persevere until I completed this project now. You can also accomplish your dream if you work hard and dedicate enough time to realize your potential.”

He added that his next major project was the construction of a helicopter, for which he had already started assembling the parts.

The 23-year-old Mutshinyani “Chichi” Madavha is a upcoming female farmer who describes herself as a fatherless, motherless and fundless farmer whose work speaks volumes.

She grew up in a family where her parents were staunch farmers who planted maize and nuts at Tshitungulwane Mudziafera village at Tshimbupfe, near Vuwani. They had also utilised the space in their yard as a garden. Here they planted spinach, beetroot, carrots and onions.

“I didn’t join my parents in farming then; all I did was to chase the joys of this world, such as fancy clothing – you know this whole lot of things about slay queens!” she smiled.

Chichi’s mother passed away in 2012. In April 2019, her father gave her the farm and, sadly, he passed away in June. At some stage, Chichi reflected upon her parents’ love for agriculture and started farming straightaway, without any first-hand experience or theoretical knowledge.

“That was in April last year,” she said. “I just started calling myself ‘an upcoming female farmer’ and planted a lot of cabbage, butternuts,

tomatoes, spinach and chillies.

Maybe farming runs in my veins.”

Today, Chichi ranks among the top producers in her area and her target markets are feeding schemes, open markets and her community.

“My wish is to supply to the big market,” she said. “Farming has taught me to be patient and to work very hard, because it is not all about harvesting.”

She said she still experienced challenges, such as direct and indirect market access and farming resources. “But, as a female farmer, my biggest challenges are funding and not enough knowledge to run a big farm,” she said.

She said farming was not an easy activity and added that it required full dedication and a lot of hard work to yield good results and sustain the business. “You don’t have to give up so early,” she said. “My motto is: ‘I am the upcoming female farmer without fear’.”

She has seasonal helpers on the farm, some of whom are family members, while others are villagers who work on a part-time basis.

Chichi believes that bringing her produce to the market can have a positive impact on the country’s economy. “I believe that my late parents would be proud of me,” she said.

VFA suffer humiliation against the Dolphins

By Frank Mavhungu After playing to a goalless draw with Berachah Valley FC on their own home soil two weeks ago, Venda Football Academy continued to upset their fans by donating points to The Dolphins FC when they lost 0-1 in their ABC Motsepe League match at the Tshifudi Stadium last Saturday.

The visitors from Polokwane meant business from the first whistle. They took the game to the home side from the word go, forcing VFA to abandon their positions and play defensive football.

The Dolphins’ effort did not pass without reward.

They were awarded a corner kick in the 18th minute. A heart-breaking scramble within the VFA danger area gave rise to The Dolphins’ spectacular goal. Thabang Moremi gave the ball the final touch.

The struggle continued, with the home side showing some signs of commitment. Mosima Twabuthwa, the VFA playmaker, could not live up to the fans’ expectations as he was tightly marked.

That forced the team’s head coach, Joel Mongalo, to replace him with Unarine Kudzingana towards the end of the first half.
