The past week, South Africans heard about the man clocking 308 km/h on the N1 in Midrand and posting a video of it on social media. Authorities were quick to track the man down and arrest him at a funeral in Limpopo. Judging by the speed the Audi driver was doing, several residents expressed the hope the authorities would prosecute this driver with the same vigour. Asked about the accident, the Makhado police referred all questions to provincial police spokesperson Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo in Polokwane. Among the questions asked were whether blood was taken from the driver to determine his blood alcohol level at the time of the accident and what the driver was being charged with. This is where the story gets even more interesting. Mojapelo responded on Tuesday evening by stating that the speed the driver was driving would be determined by the unfolding investigation and also confirmed that blood samples had been taken from the driver. “Whether or not he was intoxicated will be determined by the blood test results,” said Mojapelo. Mojapelo then stated that the man was only being charged with reckless and/or negligent driving and not drunk driving. The newspaper immediately wanted to know why the man was not also charged with drunk driving, to which Mojapelo responded: “We are currently conducting internal investigations to find out why this was not the case as the blood was taken.” Mojapelo was also asked when the man, who was treated for light injuries and discharged, would appear in court. It would seem that this will also take some time. “He will only appear in court if the Public Prosecutor decides to prosecute. Cases of this nature are first considered and, in the case of drunken driving, prosecutors only decide whether to

prosecute or not after receipt of blood samples,” said Mojapelo. At this stage, the newspaper cannot reveal the name of the 23-year-old driver as he has not appeared in court yet. Mojapelo did, however, confirm that the vehicle belongs to the young man’s parents and that he did have a valid driver’s licence. The newspaper is sure to follow this case closely. In the meantime, Jacobs again expressed his gratitude towards the police at the scene, town watch members and ambulance services for their quick response. He again urged the municipality to put speed bumps at all intersections to prevent people from getting killed.

SANParks have urged the public to turn off the geo-tagging function on their cellphones when visiting the park. By not disabling this function, poachers can actually pinpoint an animal’s exact location if the photo is uploaded onto social media.

Switch off geo tag function in KNP By Andries van Zyl By posting that once-in-a-lifetime picture of your most favourite animal in the Kruger National Park (KNP) on social media, you could inadvertently get that animal killed by poachers. This was the warning in several media reports the past month. Mr Ike Phaahla, spokesperson for South African National Parks (SANParks), is quoted in these articles as saying that they were considering jamming cellphone signals in the KNP to curb the problem of poaching. But is SANParks really serious about jamming cellphone signals in the Kruger National Park? The fact is that cellphone reception in the KNP is at best limited, with some hotspots at bigger camps. The Zoutpansberger asked Mr Phaahla this question. Phaahla responded by saying that no official statement regarding this has been made yet. “We said in our response to questions, there is concern if people post pictures with their cell phone geo tag function being active as it pinpoints the exact location and poses a security risk,” said Phaahla. “We never made an announcement except to

say we will consult and plan the way forward … We are not aiming to block any signal,” added Phaahla. While many might welcome the fact that jamming a cellphone signal might save an animal’s life, other might wonder if a link really exists between people’s posting photos of animals with their phone’s geo-tagging function on and those animals’ ending up getting killed by poachers? According to Phaahla, the answer is yes. “From interviewing suspects, we know they are active on social media,” said Phaahla. The fact of the matter is that the problem of poaching in the KNP is bigger and much worse than people might think. “Poaching is not only limited to the iconic species; it is more wide-spread than people imagine and very complicated. We as SANParks manage a system where all species are important to keep a balance, therefore we look out for anything that people target,” said Phaahla. In conclusion, Phaahla said that technology was supposed to help them and not work against their efforts. “We request people to switch of the geo-tagging function when in the KNP,” said Phaahla.

MUNNIK MEERKAT MTB CHALLENGE The annual

Munnik Meerkat Mountain Bike Challenge is around the corner and will take place on 7 March this year. If you want to participate in the 70km race, you must be 18 years or older on 31 December 2020; if you want to participate in the 35 km race, you must be a sub-junior or older. The 10km fun ride is open to all ages; however, prizes will only be awarded to categories 12 and under and sub-juniors (13 – 14). Pre-registration in Polokwane will be at the Bicycle Company, The Farmyard, on 4 March from 15:30 to 18:30, the Cycle Café in Tzaneen on the same day from 15:30 to 18:00 and at Cycle Centre in Louis Trichardt, also on 4 March, from 15:30 to 17:30. This race is presented by members of the Munnik Farmers’ Association. “We are very proud to announce that our event is still a qualifier for Limpopo colours. Only the 35km and 70km race will be used as Limpopo Colours qualifiers and will be timed races. The 10km is a fun ride, as all rides less than 15km are considered fun rides and cannot be seen or used as provincial or national colours qualifiers,” say the organisers The 70km marathon starts at 07:00 (R220 entry fee), the 35km half-marathon at 07:30 (R150 entry fee), the 10km fun ride at 08:00 (R60 entry fee) and the 3km kiddies fun ride starts at 08:30 (R30 entry fee) payable on race day ONLY. Hoërskool Louis Trichardt se nuwe Welpies (Graad 8’s) van 2020 het behoorlik die gehoor vermaak tydens die skool se jaarlikse Groentjiekonsert, met die tema Back to the Future, verlede Donderdagaand, 23 Januarie. Die hele konsert is deur die skool se leerlingraad (LUK) gereël sonder enige hulp van onderwysers. Almal was dit eens dat vanjaar se LUK en Welpies ‘n hoë standaard gestel het met ‘n uitsonderlik goeie aanbieding, met die gehoor wat op ‘n musikale toer deur die laaste paar dekades geneem is. Afgeneem is onder meer vanjaar se Groentjiekoning en -koningin, wat ná afloop van die konsert aangewys is. Voor, van links na regs, is Herman Scheepers (Groentjieprins), Tshepo Legodi (Groentjiekoning) en Stefanie Venter (Groentjiekoningin). Agter is Drian Briers (Mnr. ertrou op God, want Hy is betroubaar Alle mense laat soms ander in die steek. Die Bybel wys vir ons hoe onbetroubaar mense kan wees. Moet op prinse nie vertrou nie, hoor ons in Psalm 146. In vers 10 van ons teksgedeelte hoor ons: Mense is verganklik, mense is niks: op ‘n skaal wys hulle geen gewig nie, saam is hulle minder as niks. Die mens is nie daar om bewonder te word nie. Maar ons verstaan hierdie saak nie altyd mooi nie. Ons plaas mense op ‘n troon, en keer op keer stel hulle ons teleur. In hierdie teleurstelling begin ons dan ook in die mensdom twyfel. Wanneer mense wat veronderstel is om betroubaar te wees (byvoorbeeld owerhede, die regbank, onderwysers, ouers, geliefdes) hulself as onbetroubaar bewys en ons diep teleurstel, dan word ons hartseer en wantroue in die mensdom besonder swaar. Dawid het hierdie soort teleurstelling diep ervaar. Sogenaamde vertrouelinge, familielede, kinders en gewaardeerde volksgenote het bitter ontrou met Dawid omgegaan. Hulle het hom vals beskuldig, jag gemaak op hom, oorlog teen hom gemaak en hom probeer doodmaak. Wat gebeur as ons, net soos Dawid, besef dat die mens ontrou is? Ons word bedruk, en die wete dat mense wat van God die opdrag ontvang het om betroubaar te wees, so met mekaar kan maak, is dan te swaar om te dra. Wat ons dan soms doen, is om ons teleurstelling verkeerd te kanaliseer. Ons bly nie kwaad vir die mense wat so ontrou optree nie, ons word kwaad vir God. “Hoe kan Hy toelaat dat mense so met mekaar maak?” vra ons onsself af. “Is Hy nie dalk self ontrou nie?” Dan onttrek ons onsself totaal van God. Ons bid nie meer tot Hom nie, lees nie Bybel nie, en draai uit frustrasie en teleurstelling ons rug totaal op God. Dawid het, gelei deur die Heilige Gees, nie sy teleurstelling in die mensdom op God uitgehaal nie. Nee, hy is gelei om te verstaan dat daar ‘n duidelike verskil tussen God en mens is. Die mens is ontrou, maar God is getrou. Net by God vind ek rus, skryf Dawid. Te midde van al die ontrou mense, vind hy juis rus by God. Pleks daarvan dat die ontrouheid van mense hom verder van God dryf, trek dit hom nader aan God. Die mens verlaat hom en laat hom in die steek, maar hy weet dat God nie so is nie. God is vir hom juis ‘n beskutting, oftewel ‘n rots en ‘n veilige vestig, ‘n plek van krag en sterkte waar hy stewig kan staan teen die aanslae van ontrouheid. As daar niemand op die hele aarde is wat hy kan vertrou nie, kan hy nog steeds sy toevlug tot God neem. Hy is nie ook sommer kwaad vir God nie, hy bely “van Hom kom my redding,” en baie belangrik: “Op Hom vertrou ek.” Dawid roep sy volk, en ons ook, op met die woorde: “Vertrou altyd op Hom, my volk, stort julle hart voor Hom uit!” Die opdrag is baie duidelik. Ons moet God vertrou, want die mens se ontrou is nie ‘n bewys vir God se ontrou nie. Dit staan juis in teenstelling met God se getrouheid. Ons moet God vertrou, ons het geen verskoning nie. Hoe vertrou ons op God? Eerstens moet ons sy betroubaarheid as vanselfsprekend aanvaar. Hy is getrou, ons moet dit glo. Ons moet ook raaksien hoe God sy getrouheid aan ons bewys: Hy onderhou en regeer oor die skepping waarin ons lewe, Hy gee ons die lewe self, en is in hierdie lewe by ons, selfs al is mense ontrou teenoor ons. Hy vul ons lewens met ontelbaar baie seëninge. As God se kinders weet ons ook dat die grootste genade en seën wat God ons gegee het, sy Seun Jesus Christus as Verlosser, die ewige bewys van God se getrouheid is. Ons moet ook ons vertroue in God sigbaar maak in ons lewens, en sigbaar maak in ons handel en wandel dat ons op Hom alleen vertrou. Nie op mense nie, nie op myself nie, net Hom. Ons moet ook onthou om in navolging van God mense te wees wat vertrou kan word. Getrouheid is ‘n roeping van God. Bo en links: Hierdie groep seuns- en meisiesatlete van Laerskool Louis Trichardt het op 25 Januarie deelgeneem aan die Prestige-atletiekbyeenkoms. Die byeekoms het by Oosskool in Polokwane plaasgevind. Al hierdie kinders het presteer deur medaljes (goud, silwer of brons) in te palm.

Bo: Laerskool Louis Trichardt het verlede Woensdag hulle atletiekseisoen afgeskop met die hou van hulle jaarlikse bokkesport. Laerskool Louis Trichardt se fietsryklub het weer hulle oefeninge hervat en oefen elke Maandag en Woensdag vanaf 15:00 tot 17:00. “Jy moet ongelukkig ‘n bergfiets met ratte gebruik, want ons ry opdraandes ook. Daarvoor het jy ratte nodig, en natuurlik ‘n waterbottel en valhelm. As jou valhelm te klein is vir jou, kom nog steeds. Ons het ‘n paar spaar valhelms,” het die klub se Mark Archer gesê. Dit kos niks om aan die klub te behoort nie, maar daar is wel vier byeenkomste in die skolereeks

waaraan deelneem gaan word in die derde termyn. Dit kos R70 om daaraan deel te neem. “Ons neem as skool deel en elke kind wat deelneem verdien individueel en vir die skool punte. Ons het sover elke jaar ten minste twee kinders gehad wat vir Limpopo-kleure gekwalifiseer het,” het Archer gesê. Almal vanaf Graad R tot Graad 7 is welkom. Die klub oefen in drie verskillende groepe, so die kleintjies jaag nie saam die groot kinders die berg uit nie. “Ons soek juis die kinders wat nie rugby of netbal of krieket ensovoorts speel nie. Fietsry in nie ingestel om kinders se lewens nog besiger te maak nie, maar om meer kinders te kry om te kom deelneem aan ‘n gesonde individuele sport.
