Masindi’s replying affidavit has a twist, as she also requests that she be allowed to cross-appeal and be granted direct access to the court, should Toni’s request to appeal be granted. She does, however, want the

court to consider her request to have Toni removed.

The road to the ConCourt Earlier this month, Toni’s legal team filed papers in the Constitutional Court (ConCourt), setting out their reasons for asking this court to intervene in the Vhavenda kingship battle. Masindi’s team responded by strongly opposing the application. They feel that last year’s Supreme Court of Appeal (SCA) ruling must be honoured, and the case must be heard in the Limpopo High Court.

The latest bout in this battle follows almost exactly 10 years after the Nhlapo Commission announced that the kingship/ queenship of the Vhavenda vested in the house of the Mphephu-Ramabulana royal family. This commission’s lifetime expired shortly after this decision was announced by the then president in July 2010.

In August 2010, the royal family (or council) identified Toni Mphephu-Ramabulana as the king of the Vhavenda and informed the new commission (which was set up by legislation).

Vho-Makhadzi passes away

The entertainment fraternity and South Africa is mourning the death of veteran actress Candy Moloi, who passed away on Tuesday afternoon at a hospital in Pretoria.

An award-winning actress, Moloi shot to stardom in the early days of the SABC2 soapie, Muvhango, where she starred as Makhadzi to Chief Azwinndini Mukwevho, a role played by Gabriel Temudzani.

Years later, she left Muvhango and appeared in many other TV productions, such as Fhatu Neluvhola (in Thola, seasons 1 and 2), Makhadzi (Stokvel, season 4), Granny Rambau (Ring of

The Moloi and Ramunenyiwa families, through family spokesperson Berry Ramunenyiwa, confirmed the passing of Candy Moloi and added that funeral arrangements would be announced soon.

Moloi is survived by her children, Tshepo Moloi and Lerato “Za” Moloi.

His second and last album, entitled Worship Encounter, was released in 2016.

Educator and author, “Comrade Senzeni” dies after a short illness

By Silas Nduvheni The Tshikovha royal council in Maniini-Ha-Tshikovha near Thohoyandou and the ANC in the Vhembe region are mourning the death of Mr Livhuwani Norman Tshikovha, better known as “Comrade Senzeni”.

Senzeni (61) was the first-born son of the late Chief Thivhilaeli Tshikovha. He died on Friday, 24 July, after a short illness. He was about to be installed as chief of the Maniini-Ha-Tshikovha as he was the rightful heir to the throne, said family spokesperson Mr Cedrick Tshikovha.

Tshikovha described the deceased as a freedom fighter, community builder and former educator, who contributed much to the liberation of the country and helped to develop his community.

He also liked writing as he was author of several books, newspaper articles and publications.

When he was a student at Univen, he became the founding editor of the Univen student newsletter and was also appointed by the late former MEC for Public Works, George Phadagi, as political editor of the then Valley Messenger, Phadagi’s own publication. “He retired as educator from Shayandima Secondary last year and was busy writing another book, which was about to be published,” said Tshikovha.

The spokesperson for the ANC in the Vhembe region, Mr Tshifhiwa Dali, extended their heartfelt condolences to the Tshikovha Royal House, comrades, and friends for his untimely passing.

According to Dali, Tshikovha was one of the founding members of the South African Youth Congress’s Maniini-branch. He was a member of the ANC’s Luludi branch, now called the Veledzani Bulala Branch, until his death.

“He was a loyal and disciplined member who served in different positions at various branches to the end. His name was never mentioned in the same sentence as corruption, nepotism and

other things that could bring this organization into disrepute,” said Dali.

Dali warned his comrades, however, that they must not attend the funeral scheduled for Friday (this week) in the sacred place (Zwiendeulu) of Maniini-Ha-Tshikovha, due to the strict regulations of Covid-19.

Masindi’s legal team are clearly not convinced that the latest application can now be allowed. “This application is an expedient and blatant attempt to obstruct the set down of the matter in the High Court and to delay the final resolution of this matter, which has been delayed already for some eight years now,” Masindi states in her replying affidavit.

She then proceeds to provide a chronological report of the events that preceded the latest application, arguing that it is merely a malicious abuse of the legal system to delay the inevitable outcome of the matter.

Masindi’s reply to the Constitutional Court has a further twist – if this court allows the appeal, she requests that she be allowed to cross-appeal and be granted direct access to the court.

She also asks the court to suspend the SCA’s order that gives Toni the right to act as the “caretaker” king. Should the appeal be allowed, she wants to cross-appeal and she wants the court to recognise her as the queen of the Vhavenda.

“In my review application, the primary ground of review was that my entitlement to succeed as queen was not considered because the customary law rule of male primogeniture was applied,” she states. Ac-

cording to her, the SCA agreed that she was discriminated against because of her gender and this is partly the reason why the decision of the “socalled ‘Mphephu Ramabulana Royal Family Council’ and the President” was set aside.

She also argues that the SCA was correct in sending the matter back to the High Court, but she feels strongly that this court must decide on the kingship and not refer the matter back to the royal family for a decision.

In her affidavit, she states that she does not recognise the “Mphephu Ramabulana Royal Family Council” as the legitimate structure that can identify a ruler. “(This) is an entity that is not recognised in Vhavenda customary law. Nevertheless, a group of persons convened under this title and purported to identify the first applicant as king of the Vhavenda people on 14 August 2010,” she states.

“Several members of the royal family … have cast their lot with the applicants and I would have no prospect whatsoever of a fair procedure in their hands,” she says. Masindi also disagrees with the argument that she never made use of other remedies at her disposal when contesting the kingship. She highlights various anomalies in the interpretation of legislation, arguing that she acted within the parameters of the law, but with no success.

Masindi also defends the SCA’s decision to involve the two Houses of Traditional Leaders. “In the absence of an extant Commission with similar expertise to determine disputes over traditional leadership, it falls to the court to resolve such disputes. Since the court does not have expertise

in these matters, it was entirely appropriate for the SCA to call upon the only other state institutions that do have expertise in such matters to furnish the Court with an opinion and advice.”

Toni can delay and be regent for life In Masindi’s affidavit, she requests that, should the applicant be allowed to continue with his appeal, she would like to proceed with a counter-appeal. This involves a request that the ConCourt make a ruling on the kingship and do away with the referral to the High Court.

Masindi quotes the applicant where he states that “It is submitted that the nation expects that a final word would come from this Court.” She agrees that the ConCourt should appoint the incumbent. She further points out that this would be preferable, as she believes Toni is abusing the decision of the SCA to leave him as interim ruler.

“An intolerable situation has arisen, as explained earlier, where the SCA’s unilateral order staying the withdrawal of the first applicant’s certificate of recognition has created a perverse incentive for the first applicant to spin the legal proceedings out for as long as possible. Opportunities for doing this abound. … This could take years. All the while, the first applicant will continue to reap the benefits of a kingship that has been declared to be unconstitutional and which he is not entitled to hold,” she says.

According to security staff manning these truck stops, the number of trucks coming into the truck stop has drastically reduced. “We are not sure what is going on. Some of these truck drivers should already be in the truck stop, waiting for clearance, but they are all still in the queue,” said a man who works at one of the truck stops, but was not allowed to officially speak to the media. This contradicted Taueatsoala earlier statement that when he had visited the truck stops in the area, they had been fully packed with trucks ready to proceed into Zimbabwe.

At the time of our going to press on Wednesday, frustrated truck drivers were still stuck in the queue. The exact cause of the delay remains unclear.

Reporter gets threatened after enquiring about lottery funded project

By Anton van Zyl A reporter of the Limpopo Mirror has been warned that he will be harmed unless he stops digging into the affairs of a lottery beneficiary.

This happened after the reporter tried to obtain contact information about an organisation that received more than R15 million in lottery funding over the past three years.

The incident happened last Thursday when the reporter received a call from an unknown person, telling him to stop inquiring about the affairs of the Vyeboom Youth Development NPO. The reporter was assisting the online publication, GroundUp, which has been investigating dodgy grants made by the National Lotteries Commission. The matter was subsequently reported at the Makhado police station and a charge of intimidation is being investigated.

Efforts to call the number used by the threatening caller were unsuccessful and the SIM card is believed to have been bought for the sole purpose of making the threatening call and then discarded.

Who is Vyeboom Youth Development?

The records of the National Lotteries Commission (NLC) reflect that a non-profit organisation, Vyeboom Youth Development (VYD), received R5 million in 2017. The money was supposedly meant to sponsor a music festival in Mpumalanga, called the Troopers Festival. In August last year, the same NPO received R10.1 million in lottery funding, apparently for a sports-related project.

Department of Social Development records show that the NPO is non-compliant, as it has not filed any of the statutory documentation it should have with the NPO Directorate since 2013, after being registered

as an NPO in 2011 at an address in Vyeboom, Limpopo.

The person listed as chairperson is Thakhani Theobald Mudau, but when contacted, he said the organisation was no longer active. He told a GroundUp reporter that he had “last worked” at the organisation in 2017 and was unaware that the organisation had received more than R15 million in Lottery grants.

The NLC was notified of the threats to the reporter on Friday and asked to supply contact details of the representative of the NPO that they had dealt with. The NLC was also asked for details of the R10,1 million project it had funded. It was explained to the NLC that the only way the media can defend itself against such threats, is to shine a light on whatever people behind it are trying to hide.

NLC spokesperson Ndivhuho Mafela was quick to condemn such an act of criminality. “Clearly, law enforcement should be allowed to fully investigate and deal with these reported acts of criminality, which should have no place in society,” he said. Despite his lofty words, Mafela refused to divulge any information about the Vyeboom project and advised us to file a Public Access to Information Act (PAIA) request.

Mafela was informed that, as he was well aware, the NLC routinely refuses PAIA applications. Applications filed over the past two years by Limpopo Mirror and by GroundUp were all refused on dubious grounds, as were appeals against the refusals. The argument that both NPOs and the NLC are obliged by law to be transparent and accountable has clearly not been embraced by the NLC.

Why a non-compliant NPO? The way the NLC uses non-compliant NPOs to run multimillion-rand projects has been highlighted on

several occasions by investigative reporters. The Limpopo Mirror first exposed this in February 2018, when we followed the trail of a R27.5 million grant to a Vhembe-registered NPO, Denzhe Primary Care.

What we found has turned into one of the biggest scandals that the NLC has had to deal with. Further digging revealed that Denzhe was both dormant and non-compliant and had been hijacked by a Pretoria-based lawyer. Of the R27.5 million the NPO received – to build a drug rehabilitation centre near Pretoria – more than R20 million cannot be accounted for.

Non-profit organisations are registered with the NPO Directorate, which falls under the Department of Social Development (DSD). They are issued with an NPO number and have a statutory obligation to submit annual reports to the DSD. In the case of Denzhe, as with Vyeboom, this has not happened.

Questioned on the practice of giving millions of rands in funding to non-compliant NPOs, the NLC’s chief operating officer, Phillemon Letwaba, said that submitting annual returns to the DSD was not a prerequisite for receiving a grant. “We do not check whether the NPO has filed returns with Social Development, because it is not one of the requirements in terms of the (Lotteries) Act,” he said in 2018.

What makes the grant to the Vyeboom NPO even more suspicious, is that the initial R5 million grant for the music festival was awarded in terms of the NLCs pro-active funding initiative.

In the past, all organisations had to apply for funding with the NLC. These applications would then be vetted and, if viable, approved. In 2016, the legislation changed, making it possible for the NLC’s Board, the NLC itself or the Minister of Trade, Industry and Competition to identify projects and then appoint an organisation to implement these ideas. It is believed that the latest R10.1 million grant was also awarded as proactive funding.

This, in effect, means that the NLC searched for and identified a non-compliant NPO, Vyeboom Youth Development, as a suitable candidate to run multimillion-rand projects.

A festival for Troopers?

GroundUp’s reporters spent a lot of time trying to trace the people behind Vyeboom NPO. The person listed as original chairperson, Thakhani Mudau, denied knowledge of the latest grant, but was less forthcoming with information about the music festival.

He promised to respond to questions sent via email and WhatsApp but failed to do so. He also did not answer his phone after we tried to contact him.

A Facebook page was set up in September last year for Vyeboom Youth Development, shortly after the NPO had received the money. The page is being managed by Tshidumo Fhumulani Nicolus. When he was contacted

by GroundUp, however, he said he had no knowledge of the Troopers Festival.

The NPO was established to cater to the needs of the local Vyeboom community, he said. Its activities include a vegetable farm and they provide meals for orphans. Nicolus said he had previously applied for lottery funding but with no success.

The Troopers Festival features twice in NLC documentation; during a special NLC Board meeting on 2 September 2016, a decision was taken to utilize R45 million in surplus funds in the Arts and Culture sector. The funds were distributed to “respective qualifying flagship projects”, up to a maximum of R5 million each.

In 2016, the money for the festival was channelled through an NPO called Migingiriko Projects. This NPO was registered in 2015, but it has not fulfilled its statutory reporting obligations with the DSD since 2017.

GroundUp’s investigation found that this NPO does not have a Facebook page or any other online presence.

The contact numbers on the original documentation were no longer working and a person who responded to an email from GroundUp refused to comment.

In 2017, another R5 million earmarked for a “Troopers Festival” was paid, but this time to Vyeboom Youth Development.

Enquiries among artists in the Vhembe area provided no clarity about any Troopers Festival. None of the local artists could recall having heard of such a festival. According to the NLC documentation, the festival was staged in Mpumalanga, but Internet searches reveal no information.

The event is not listed on any websites for festivals in Mpumalanga.

Condemnation The latest threat to a reporter investigating lottery grants was condemned by the SA National Editors Forum (SANEF). In a press release issued last Friday, SANEF says that it is inexcusable for individuals to threaten journalists. “We trust that the police will give this matter the urgency it deserves and identify the culprits,” the statement reads.

SANEF also expresses concern about the reluctance of the NLC to release information about NPOs receiving funding. In 2019, following a series of articles exposing questionable grants and possible large-scale corruption, the NLC stopped publishing details of organisations being funded.

Even when questions were asked in parliament, the NLC refused to disclose which organisations benefit from its funding.

After mounting pressure from a various sectors, the NLC budged this week and released details of the past two years’ beneficiaries on Monday.

The details made available included an incomplete list of organisations that benefited from its R150 Covid-19 relief initiative.

The Rabali family of Rabali village in the Nzhelele area were left shocked after their house was severely damaged by a fire last Thursday.

According to the owner and businesswoman Ms Mashudu Rabali, she was sleeping when unknown arsonists apparently set alight their six-room house and burnt down the garage, two fridges, and some stock. They

could, however, save the car inside the garage.

She said she was surprised that arsonists had petrol-bombed her house.

Fortunately, she managed to extinguish the flames, and the culprits ran to a nearby house.

They have not been traced since.

“I heard a sound at the garage and suspected somebody wanted to steal my stock inside the garage. When I arrived to open the garage door, I realised that

the house was on fire,” she said.

Rabali said that she screamed for help to the neighbours, who came and helped to extinguish the fire before it could damage the whole house.

She added that she did not understand the motive behind the arson attack, as she had no enemies. “Whoever burned my house has caused great damage to my family and destroyed my stock,” she said. She was selling oranges and vegetables, and these were destroyed.

She added that they could only manage to stop the fire from destroying her rooms.

“I am very saddened. I can’t tell why, out of all places, they picked my house,” she said.

Rabali added that the damage caused was estimated at more than R200 000.

She said that watching their belongings burn to ashes was very painful. “I am a strongwilled person, and I have accepted and put everything to God,” she said. “I felt like I was dreaming when I watched helplessly,” the woman said. “I am now appealing to any good Samaritan to come and assist me to renovate my garage and buy more stock.”

Incomplete RDP project may be administrative blunder

By Kaizer Nengovhela Politicians and officials are often quick to blame contractors for incomplete projects, but what if such an incomplete project is a case of administrative blundering?

The reason why dozens of RDP houses in Tshivhuyuni, Muwaweni, Wayeni and Mufeba were never completed may be a combination of many factors.

Two weeks ago, the national chairperson of the committee on Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta), Ms Faith Muthambi, joined the Speaker of Makhado Municipality, Ms Lindiwe Mohale, and the ward councillor on a visit to an area where RDP houses were to be built.

Allegations were made that the contractor had abandoned the project in 2018, leaving the beneficiaries with unfinished homes. The beneficiaries claim they cannot complete the houses by using their own money, citing poverty and unemployment. Residents now demand to know why the project had been abandoned.

One of the beneficiaries, Ms Tshifhiwa Munyai, told the delegation that the foundation of her house has been left unfinished. “I was happy when they dug the foundations in my yard. I thought my children would have their own room. Instead, people later came to refill the trenches,” she said.

Munyai lives in a mud house, which is also in a state of near collapse. She said this posed a danger to the lives of the family members, especially during the rainy season. She said they had notified the local ward councillor about their plight, but no action had been taken.

Munyai said she was struggling to take care of her family. “I wish I had money. I could have completed my house, which was left incomplete.

It is painful because we had hopes of becoming better people. My heart is aching.” She said the contractor who had been given the tender last year to build RDP houses in the same area had finished the project, but the one who had been given the tender in 2018 had abandoned the contract.

Ms Faith Muthambi described the situation as “fruitless and wasteful” expenditure. “The municipality and councillors are fooling around with our people and should take responsibility for failing to monitor the project.” She said during her visit to the village she would not tolerate shoddy developers who did not finish projects after they had been awarded tenders.

“Harsh measures will be taken against contractors who do not take their job seriously after being awarded tenders,” she said.

She added that not finishing government projects affected service delivery. “We do not want service providers who, when awarded a tender, forget about the project. We need people who are serious about service,” said Muthambi. She said she was going to meet with the Limpopo executive member of Coghsta, Basikopo Makamu, to request him to investigate what had happened to the abandoned project.

Coghsta spokesperson Mr Masedi Molebatsi said a commitment had been made that all the projects in the province would be completed.

“We are quite aware of the RDP house problem in the province. We know that there are people who have been waiting for their houses for a long time, and this was because the developers or contractors that were appointed were failing to complete the houses,” he said.

He said many houses in the province still needed to be completed. He appealed to the affected families to be patient while their problems were being attended to.

When Limpopo Mirror managed to trace down the contractor responsible for the project, Ms Florence Rangata of Dipetle General Construction, she painted a completely different picture. According to Rangata, her company had been awarded a tender of R7 million by COGTA to build houses in the area. Everything started off well, but then the department stopped paying her. After she had been paid R4 million, the money dried up.

Rangata explained that she had had to cut down on the number of houses. She said that she had left 15 houses unfinished at Muwaweni, one at Mufeba, 10 at Muwaweni and one at Tshivhuyuni. All the building material that was left over is in storage at Mashamba. She further said that the department had told her that their budget was depleted, which is why they did not pay her to complete the project.

Dr Muremela publishes second book, Why men die young?

The mud studio produces another quality production

By Bernard Chiguvare “I am not worried about the state of the structure of the studio. We produce credible music from that mud studio,” said Wilson Langu Baloyi, who recently released a second album, Jazz music.

Baloyi (40), dropped out of school in Grade 10 because of financial constraints. He worked for years as a contract worker in the electrical industry.

“The contract closed, and I had a hard time. Having been a music fan for a long time and watching my father play music, I decided to join him,’ said Baloyi, fondly known as giraffe (because of his height).

His father taught him how to play the guitar.

In 2018, Baloyi produced

his first gospel music album, Ahi Khenseni Jehova, meaning “Thank you Lord”.

He said the album was still selling well. Fellow church members support him by buying the album.

Asked why he had decided to record his album in the mud studio in Mpfeni Block D 1, Baloyi said, “I usually mind about quality work. Out of the studios I know around, the mud studio produces quality music. In addition, it is a stone’s throw away from my home. I do not have to get a taxi to be at the studio.”

In April this year, Baloyi released an album of jazz music.

He was joined by the Elim Big Jazz Band.

By Silas Nduvheni A medical practitioner in Thohoyandou, Dr Lutendo Samson Muremela, recently published his second book, Why Men Die Young? The book also includes vital information about common diseases, gender-based violence, and the coronavirus.

Dr Muremela, who has been practicing as a general medical practitioner for more than 30 years, published his first book, Living a healthy lifestyle, in 2018. His latest book was also read and recommended by former Limpopo MEC for health Dr Norman Mabasa, motivator and public speaker Humbelani Netshandama and the chairperson of the Vhembe-based Men’s Forum Munna Ndi Nnyi? Dr Bardwell Mufunwaini.

Muremela, who was born and raised at the rural village of Matsika in Malavuwe, said in his research of more than 30 years, he found out that more men died when compared to women. According to Muremela, men are crime masters and he attributes some reasons for early deaths to violence, especially when drunk, suicide, and ignorance, among others.

The book has 14 chapters, like pride, male violence and crime, men and HIV/Aids and some suggested solutions against gender violence. “Men should learn to forgive, learn to ignore an insult and to tell yourself that, under no circumstances will you ever assault your spouse. Have room for disappointment; your spouse is not an angel, he/she may cheat on you or dump you at any time; however, don’t assault or

kill anyone,” said Dr Muremela.

He also advises that men should not kill children, even after discovering that they are not yours. “We also have to give advice to all lovers that they must be on the lookout for early signs of abuse, like a lover being hungry, forcing intercourse despite your objection. Never wants to win all arguments, rejects friends who want you to quit your job and stay at home, because of his insecurities,” he added.

He further said that one should familiarize him/herself with all types of abuse, so that you may know when it develops.

Rasta NK is a promising reggae artist Entertainment Growing up while listening to the late Lucky Dube’s music planted a musical seed in the heart of Kuvhanganani Nemaukula, better known as Rasta NK in the local reggae music fraternity.

The musician, who hails from Mavhunda village outside Thohoyandou, is making a name for himself in the tough music industry. With the release of his debut album, entitled Zwiito Zwavho, Rasta NK is undoubtedly now counted among the most promising reggae artists around Vhembe.

Rasta NK started his music journey with the group Southern Wailers in 2009. “The group recorded only one album, and after it dissolved, we went our different ways. Since then, I have been on my own, composing songs

while preparing to record my own album. This finally materialised when I recorded and released my own album this year.”

He says the sounds of Lucky Dube influenced him to love reggae music wholeheartedly. “I consider the late Lucky Dube to be the best reggae music artist South Africa has ever produced. It will take many years before we have someone who can replace him.

Although he is no more, his music lives on, and it continues to inspire us to follow in his footsteps.

Indeed, Lucky Dube has played a major role of encouragement in my music career.”

Rasta NK says he believes in sharing musical knowledge with other artists. “That is why I have featured other talented artists on my album. On the album, I have worked with prolific reggae music heavyweights such as Just Ice

Mbedzi, Madzhasi, R Boy, Elekanyani Tshabuse and Given Madzunya. This has made my album unique because it has different music styles and contributions by different artists.”

That has an impact on my career because I am unable to perform for my fans in public places. Like other artists, I now depend on social media, especially WhatsApp, to sell my music. This, too, shall pass, and I believe that I will stand on my feet again when things go back to normal.”

Since she started singing in 2015, Shudu Gal has released six albums, with her latest, Mastand,

released in March. “My first album, Tshibasigira, was released in 2015. I then went to the studio to release my second album, Ndi Shudu, in 2016. Ndi Shudu was followed by Ndi khou toda ngoho in 2017. All three my first albums were manyalo music, until I changed to house music in 2018 with the release of Mbambe. My fifth album, Lo vhilingana, was released last year, and my latest is Mastand.”

Vhavenda Cultural Group nominated for #SAMA26

They were nominated in the Best Traditional Album category for their robust album, Sialala,

“I sing about issues of love, hatred, unity and peace,” she said. “As a people, we need to do away with any hatred, vengeance, and all other criminal elements within

our communities. There's more to life than living in disarray – love conquers.”

She had discovered her singing talent during a Life Orientation period after her teacher had requested her to sing as part of the lessons. She revealed to Limpopo Mirror that she found out that she was a good singer and that she had not looked back ever since that time. Today, she is a house and manyalo artist, and she is continuing to find life's meaning in and via music.

She is popular for songs such as Kha-tshi fare, Ariho robva, U kambiwa hu a dura, Magaraba, Ngadeni, Musadzi vhukuma, and Zwiliwa zwa nnda.

Sialala is a package of musical delights, which has been prepared by some talented singers, and comprises seven tracks, Hovhilingana, Skhumba ft Makhadzi, Sialala, Ngoma dza vhatei, Ndi do bva nda fhela, Kha vha nndwele, and Sialala (instrumental).

“The songs have been widely welcomed, especially Sialala, which speaks about the eternity of our culture,” said Miriri. “It encourages the youth to respect and embrace our culture.”

The purpose of the group is to compose, sing and promote Tshivenda cultural music and spread culture through music.

“We further aim to keep young people in one place, off the streets, and for them not to forget their cultural roots,” he said. “Most of our members are youths.”

Vhavenda Cultural Group first gained popularity with songs such as Tshanda Nguvhoni, Jojo, Vho Alilali, Ngoma dza vhatei and Thonifho.

As manager, Miriri has helped the group to be independent and establish their existence to be able to go on and record their music.

The group started by performing in shopping complexes and public areas, until they managed to record their album. Some of the group members have managed to record their own solo albums.

The group is made up of 10 members, who are Khuthi Mbulaheni, Shandu Magagula, Khuthadzo Mushaphi, Sedzani Matshusa, Sadam Mphumi, Thandi Mthewana, Rokunda Khuba, Fhulufhelo Magagula, Viera Mbedzi, and Trica Selala.

They had previously scored a nomination for the #SAMA25 in the Best Traditional Group category, and they hope that this time around, with their second nomination, they will bring the award home.

G-voice, the darling of the listeners Given “G-voice Mukwei wa Madrumbasi” Nekhumbe, the darling of many listeners, is the presenter of the Tshivenda music programme Nambi ya dzi Nambi on Phalaphala FM every Saturday morning.

Born and raised in the mountainous Ha-Rambuda, Nekhumbe is a household name in the local broadcasting industry today.

He started his career as a radio presenter at Univen Radio.

Nekhumbe believes that every person needs to surround him- or herself with positive people who utter words of encouragement. He first realized that he had a passion for poetry, drama, novels, and short stories when he was at Thathe Secondary School. He used to imitate other people’s voices, which is where the nickname G-voice came from.

In 2014, he enrolled with the University of Venda for a BA in youth development. He took part in radio-presenting auditions at Univen FM and got the post of radio presenter, after which he hosted multiple shows and gained confidence in presenting. He is a renowned master of ceremonies at many events in Limpopo.

He has also had great interest in creative broadcasting. “It makes me feel proud to break a story that suddenly becomes the talk of the town and brings changes in many areas of our society,” he said. “I am that kind of person who is positive about every aspect of life.

There are many things I like to do, to see, and to experience.”

He urges the youth to be serious with their education, so that they can make a significant contribution to the community in which they live. “Youths must stay away from drugs and criminal activities and prepare themselves for careers that will benefit them in life.” He also mentions that he was hungry for success and works hard to succeed. He has been shunting between roles, and he ascribes his success to hard work, perseverance, and effective time management.

Nekhumbe says he is not yet satisfied by his recent success as he plans to achieve more in life. He adds that he is still young and still has more to offer to the community. “I need more skills to improve myself in my work environment.”

According to him, pupils need to be given moral education that encourages them to stay away from committing crimes. “It is important for elders and teachers to tell the children about the dangers of involving themselves in crime,” he says.

business management. She is passionate about people, ambitious about her goals, and very persistent. She strives to become more than just her name as she endeavours to become a model.

“I want to be a model people can look up to, which is why I entered Miss Empress South Africa.” She hopes to capture the hearts and votes of her fellow people in Vhembe.

“I was born in a very supportive family and my parents encouraged me to take beauty pageants very seriously,” she says.

Sikhau is passionate about development in the community and the empowerment of women, which is why she hopes to be a thought leader on femininity and womanhood. “I want to change the stereotype that beautiful women are petite or slim. I started to join beauty pageants when I was still young. I was crowned in many local beauty pageants and, since then, I have told myself that I would like to compete in the Miss South Africa competition one day.”

She said that said she was still going to sit down with different traditional leaders around Vhembe to identify organisations that deal with disadvantaged children. She also wants to help identify new models. “This area has a lot of potential. What they need is assistance from those who have the experience, and this is what I will be focussing on,” she said.

According to Sikhau, she wants to identify ambassadors for social-responsibility programmes. She also wants “to showcase and promote community charitableness, cultural excellence, awareness, education and unity”.

Dr Chabalala lived life to the fullest

Dr Chabalala is survived by his wife and three children, who are Dzunisani, Tlangelani, and Madali. He will be missed by his siblings Ana and George, his mother N’waxitlhangoma, grandchildren Masungulo and Shalati, and the country at large.

He was laid to rest last Friday.

The Vhembe District bade farewell to one of its own treasures in the person of Dr Risimati Willy Chabalala, who passed away on 21 July.

Chabalala was the first-born son of the late Luther Mkhachani Chabalala and N’waxitlhangoma Mphephu Chabalala. He was born at Tlangelani village (Mdabula) on 7 July 1953.

“Like any other African child, he was once a shepherd, a footballer, and a responsible village boy in general, but he never ignored the importance of education,” said his daughter, Ms Madali Chabalala.

He attended Tlangelani and Twananani primary school, and Hlalukweni and Giyani High school, after which he proceeded to Tivumbeni College, where he obtained his Junior Secondary Teaching Diploma.

In 1978, he was appointed as principal of Hlalukweni High School. He was also very involved in church activities and he helped the Evangelical Presbyterian Church to grow bigger and stronger. In his life, he was guided by biblical scripture that had him marry his lovely wife, Mrs Shalati Jane ‘ntombhi ya ka Valoyi’ Chabalala.

He had adopted many schools to ensure star development and results, such as Hlalukweni, Thambisa, Ximun’wana, Tiyani, Khomanani, Mbhanyele, Jilongo, Gidjana, Shirilele and PP Hlungwani.

Flood lights for Tshiozwi bus stops and pick-up points

By Tshifhiwa Mukwevho Residents of Tshiozwi and neighbouring villages are celebrating the implementation of a bus-stop lighting project that has benefited them.

As a way of fighting and preventing possible attacks on early-morning and late-evening commuters, the Vhathu Ndi Mapfura Foundation erected floodlights at strategic points at several bust stops and loading points along the D3751 road between Tshiozwi and the neighbouring villages.

The director of the Vhathu Ndi Mapfura Foundation, Musanda Vho-Makhado “Vhathundimapfura” Sinthumule, activated the flood lights early last week.

A 34-year-old mother of three children, Ms Ndanduleni Mulaudzi, said that she usually arrived at the bus stop at 04:30 for the 05:00 bus and that it would still be very dark at the bus stop where she had to wait for some time before

the bus arrived. “While waiting in the dark, it was always frightful and not safe, but what could one do then?” she said.

Vhathundimapfura, who had also donated some blankets to the AFM Tshiozwi at Tshiozwi village, said that the organisation wanted to ensure that the workers would have lit spots to wait at for the bus or their mode of transport to work.

“We must try by all means to annihilate any possibilities of security risk to our people, who are mostly women and vulnerable at most times,” he said. “We would like to thank all people

who continue to support the foundation in its community-upliftment initiatives as we continue adding value to the lives of our people.”

Vhathundimapfura pleaded with people to protect the flood lights from vandalism. “When we do initiatives like this one, we always need the community to bear in mind that we are doing it for their good, thus it is upon them to ensure that the property of the community remains intact and not vandalised,” he said.

The staff and children at the home were treated to a nice hot meal prepared by members of the local council, which included Chantel Steyn (CSC social worker), Ronel van der Schyff (administrative official) and CSC volunteers Runganani and Queen Tshimuka (accompanying photo).

Jeffrey "Soccer" Tshifhango was a hardworking, disciplined, and dedicated soccer player during his time.

Tshifhango started his football career as part of the Tshiozwi reserve team in the nineties before being promoted to the senior team. The team was competing in the Great North East Province in the Solly’s League at that stage.

He later played for Giyani Progress, Mavambe Highlanders, Shayandima Bobs Stars, Price Busters Aces United, Makwarela United Scientists, Madombidzha Try Again and many more. He played alongside players such as the late Chico Bila, Philbert Ndove, Colly Chauke, Aggrey Hlungwane, Dennis Madzinane, Ivy Mathuba, Manu Davhana, Pysco Shandukani, Tshilidzi Radzuma, Toy Kutama, and many more.

He joined Rabali Blackpool at Nzhelele, coached by Kenny Ndlazi, and he played with the likes of Salter Netshitahame, Killer Mulaudzi, Jomo Matamela, Cyril Nzama, Dan

Munengiwa and MacDonald Mkhanzi.

He went back to Tshiozwi Dynamos after the team was relegated. From there, he was recruited to join Black Leopards and he helped Leopards gain promotion to the elite league.

When Pat Malabela bought Dynamos, he went with the team to Giyani and played alongside Salthiel Phasha, Mpho Dagaga, Links Ragimana, Magic Ratshivhadelo and Baldwin Maimela. They were coached by the well-travelled Walter Rautman, as well as Shephard Murape and the late Donald Ramabulana.

He said that his most memorable match was against Black Leopards when he was still playing for Dynamos. He came back to Tshiozwi Dynamos and was recruited by the owner of Thohoyandou Blue Birds, Mr Maungedzo Netshituni. He played with teammates such as Vusi Kharivhe, Wonder Mashau, Masinga Tshipota, Mpho Dagada and many more.

He believes youngsters need to put in more hard work if they want to go far with a football career. “Youngsters

out there must know that it is not going to be easy. You need to be patient if you want to go far and believe in what you are doing and associate yourself with the right people.”

“They keep things simple, but dedication to sports does lack.

Soccer is so highly commercialised; the players’ focus is on quick money, and one thing that I feel disturbed about is that the players move regularly between different teams.

He assisted the club in gaining promotion to the elite league the following season.

Mulovhedzi thanked Black Leopards for the exposure they had given him during his stay with them over the past three years. “We really enjoyed our relationship with Black Leopards over the past three years, but unfortunately we could not extend his stay as we felt that we could get him something better for his age,” concluded Mulovhedzi.

Mhlongo was the third player to part ways with Black Leopards within a space of four months. Thuso Phala was the first to leave their camp after his contract was terminated, following acts of misconduct. Karabo Tshepe followed suit before Mhlongo’s threeyear contract with the club expired on 30 June. Coach Justice Mutileni has more big dreams

Mutileni is one of the most highly qualified mentors in the country. Born at Mashamba village outside Elim on 15 February 1977, Mutileni is equipped with a SAFA D License, a SAFA Level One coaching certificate, a CAF A License coaching certificate and an Ajax Cape Town coaching certificate.

According to him, he still has a lot to offer to football as a young mentor.

He revealed that his dream was to coach at national level.

Dagada still playing soccer

By Kaizer Nengovhela The former star of Dynamos and Black Leopards FC, Mpho Dagada, is still active in soccer.

He started loving and playing soccer at a tender age inprimary school and went to Rambuda High School. He then went on to play for Tshibvumo Young Stars.

He was recruited by Winners Park and later joined Dynamos FC. He joined Black Leopards and then he was recruited by Mr Chris Mahadana to join Thohoyandou Blue Birds.

He said when he played for Dynamos, he was sharing a room with Josam Ndou and at Black Leopards with Rian Hartslief.

He played alongside Thokozani Mnguni, Silver Tshabalala, Bolly Maimela, Nkhiptheni Matombo, Sibusiso Links Ragimana, Joel Seroba, Alex Bapela, Wanani Mulaudzi, Jeffrey Tshifhango, Salthiel Phasha and many more in different teams.

He keeps on encouraging the youth and assisting them in many ways, buying them soccer boots and balls. His message to the youth is that a sportsman is a disciplined person. “Stay away from alcohol and drugs. The chances of success are at your door. Soccer and education are closely related,” he added.

He encourages the youth to play soccer and keep on studying. Dagada said that discipline was key and education of primary importance in their future. “Those who have talent, balance your football career with education. You cannot play football until you die,” he said.

About his football career, he emphasised that the journey had been a long and fulfilling one. His dedication to football was not focused or based on what he could benefit, but about the enjoyment of the game.

He never hung up his soccer boots and is still playing for the Lombard Masters.

At the age of 43, a well-known local football coach, Mr Jabulani Justice Mutileni, feels that he still has much to offer to football.

Just like most of his counterparts, Mutileni did play football during his heydays. He played for the then affiliate of the Solly’s League, Mashamba Forward Movers, for two seasons before moving to the now-defunct Vodacom League side, Sister Park FC, in the mid-nineties.

Although he does not know the taste of playing football at professional level, Mutileni says he will never forget the year when he was part of the U/20 team that represented the Limpopo Province in the United Bank Tournament in Bloemfontein. That was where he competed with players such as Benny McCarthy, Mathew Booth and Japie Motale.

After hanging up his soccer boots in 1999, Mutileni decided to pursue a career in football coaching. His road to fame started when he successfully attended the introductory coaching

course the following year. The Hlanganani Football Association appointed him the head coach for their U/12 and U/14 teams upon his completion of the course.

He later accepted the coaching job offer from Maindis Ladies FC, where he stayed for three years. Some of the teams he coached between 2005 and 2014 include Mukondeni Innocent Defenders, FC Basel, JM School of Excellence, SAFA Vhembe U/17 squad and the Limpopo SAB U/21 team.

When Madridtas FC bought the ABC Motsepe League franchise in 2016, they put their trust in Mutileni, whom they appointed as the team’s head coach.

He migrated to another ABC Motsepe League side, The Dolphins FC, where he stayed for two seasons. The Dolphins FC qualified for the national promotional playoffs twice in a row under the guidance of Mutileni.
